Who knows wtf Twitter is gonna look like by the end of the year? Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, Tumblr, and all the other cesspits? I’ve got it all covered! Social media is changing and we must change with it. I’m so tired god please weh

Twitter is in free fall. Panic ensues. Valid. Many of us need that hellsite. Badly. It’s imperfect trash, but its *our* trash, understand? Fuck these “alternatives”. They are all noise right now. Cohost doesn’t allow commercial activity in its TOS, Mastodon has low engagement right now. Twitter Blue is here to stay. As VTubers, we all benefit from having it, actually. For $8/mo, you will be prioritized and boosted with mentions and replies. This means that threads and replies to you bump you up on the TL. Even if you pay for it, Lists and Twitter Circles are still a good idea. Heck, rotate people out of Twitter Circles to make sure you’re able to talk to more people. Continue to use Twitter to network by providing value to others and help others in their journey. Be chill and don’t use people for clout--it’s disingenuous. Treat people like people.

I can’t guarantee that things will be the same here on Twitter and neither can anyone else. The current data sets I see from clients and others may show that not much is changing, but this site is changing every day. We need to play it day by day and not worry too much about it.

Twitter has shops, utilize tf out of the business features. Given how much of a mess the site is with its daily tweaks and the loss of valuable engineers at Twitter, things could be topsy-turvy. Who knows? Be active!

This being said, you shouldn’t rely on Twitter alone. It’s not good for your business nor is it good for growing your brand recognition. So I’ll list where to go and the use cases. Don’t use this list to go to literally every place. There’s just not enough time in a day to maintain it all.

Don’t make Insta your mainstay. Please, for the love of God don’t. Everything wrong with FB is still wrong with Insta with the added bonus of it being Diet Tik Tok. That being said, it still is a good networking tool and can help your sales with its shop features (for businesses/brands/media that don’t want to use Twitter). So what to do with Insta? Repost your Tik Toks and hit it n quit it. Post your schedule (3:2 format, crop down with 1:1 squares and schedule out posts to upload your schedule). Update your stories with important things (they’re pinned tweets basically). Have a link in your profile and reply to people when you can. Use relevant hashtags and hashtags that aren’t super saturated. GL;HF

SEO can be a benefit (technical jargon I’ll save you from), but you must remain authentic. What works on Twitter doesn’t fly on Tumblr. You will not get traction from doing what you do here.

Pay attention to etiquette. You can have assholes, but many are willing to joke as if nothing had happened. Be consistent by liking and reblogging things. Turn off your brain and follow blogs and tags that are up your alley and QUEUE up things to keep posting throughout the day. Tumblr humor is ironic, but not irony-poisoned. It’s punny and quirky and you must kill the chains that bind your inner cringe. Truly be yourself, share your personal thoughts more (it's a blogging site ffs), share your fandom of things, and things’ll be okay.

Also important on the ettiquite as a first tip: dont act like you do on Twitter. Its a different audience and the normal ways of crossposting wont work here. This is not Twitter. Tumblr is a blogging site where blogs share each other and it is fandom-heavy (meaning sharing who your favorite oshii is for example and hyping up others). It comes naturally. Be yourself and focus on building up a presence on your blog to give people a good idea of who tf you are. Nobody is really a celebrity here and you can't act like you are here. I made another mega thread for this, read it later. YouTube should be one of your mainstays as a VTUBER. It’s more work, yes, but they also have Community Posting for everyone now. Scaling up your brand and having better brand recognition is crucial here. As you post more videos, ALWAYS improve your pacing, thumbnails, and titles.

Twitch

We know it. We love it. Consistency is key. Start with Rule of 3s: 3 days/week, 3 hours/day, 3 social media outlets. This is a general rule for a reason, but it's a good minimum to start with because I’ve seen too many clients in deep need. If you need to start half an hour later to catch your regular audience, then do so. Starting out, you need consistent numbers, engagement, and retention. I’ll explain later, but you want to do what you can to increase production value and give more interactables for chat to use.

Advice for partners, you need to continue to carry the momentum to scale. By this point, you likely know what it is you need to do, but perhaps there’s a discrepancy with engagement or retention, or god knows what that holds your audience back. Collabs help, but not as much as you’d like. This comes with raids being a nice networking tool funnily enough. Raid people with similar content and vibe as you to continue to network with people. Switching audiences and using adjacent categories to find that audience may be what you need.

This is all hard to determine for partners so plainly on social media without analyzing data, audience, content, branding/design, and personality. There’s a lot that goes into your churn (how many folks you lose in your audience on average). Fixing that can either require optimization and turning your personality up to 11 more consistently and differently, but also can mean taking a leap into faith with a “big risk, big reward mentality”. One thing I know works would be the optimization tweaks here and there by looking at data (or not looking at all and just gathering feedback from your audience and friends and staying objective and factual), and diversification on different platforms so more can know who you are.

Try tools like Streambee to simplify the VOD review process Streamloots to increase engagement and have better monetization TITS, VRChat, and curation to invite viewers with “planned exclusivity” rather than total exclusivity (how you do this is up to you).

Discord Not really a social media site

Great for talking and engaging your community and breeding loyalty. VTubers need fewer “groups”, fewer individual servers, and more community servers where you can pool your resources and hype each other up. Effectively make use of what Stream Teams are good for and raise each other up.

Monetization

Use Kofi for tips, a shop, comms

Use Gumroad for another shop that has more discoverability

Use Patreon for memberships to slowly phase out Twitch subs. Be creative and have fun with Patreon rewards

Use Streamloots and have fun with it

18. Has Mr. Garrison improved over the years?

As a character, he’s pretty fantastic early on. He’s so uniquely weird and sincere in the early seasons. I’m thinking about World Wide Recorder Concert, Fourth Grade, Weight Gain 4000 - he’s a deeply insecure man with serious baggage. It’s like the discomfort of seeing your teacher at the grocery store, having to come to terms with his being a regular person, but cranked up to 11 and he’s not remotely regular. He’s buying cough syrup with his assless chapped submissive, and he’s making the Richard Gere gerbil urban legend real right before Butters’ very eyes.

As the series progresses, he becomes more of an adult Cartman - mainly a release valve for ignorance and prejudice (probably starting in earnest when he’s the vehicle by which they espouse their OG problematic trans take). It feels like he’s only Trump because Cartman is too young. Some of the Trump/Garrison gags are quite entertaining though. I love the Bill Hicks/George Carlin-style set where he’s smoking and purposefully doing sexism to lose supporters (reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Krusty is also George Carlin. Canyonero!)

I don't think going from a well-meaning but terrible and sexually inappropriate teacher to South Park's stand-in for Trump is an improvement for him morally if that’s what the question is getting at. I'm gonna say he has not improved - like, as a person - over the years, but probably should not have been allowed to work with children in the first place. I haven't been up in it or observing for long enough periods to be able to say if this lull is normal for the off-season. I stopped reading SP fanfic and watching the show regularly around 2010/2011 and only got back into it during covid. That’s a pretty big absence.

I just started using this account when the first Paramount special dropped and got a lot of notes and followers right away despite my ineptitude w/ social media, so there’s def still interest in the show when they’re putting out content. It’ll be interesting to see if it picks up again and endures once the next season drops in a few weeks.

I personally feel compelled to write stupid long character analyses, and I’m drawing the egg children and writing cringe fics I may or may not post. So it’s not expired in my heart, but I’m not a good metric of general trends. On the other hand, it seems like youths on tik tok, twitter, and insta are doing something called ���kinning” the characters. I figure that’s none of my business, but there’s clearly still excitement surrounding the show. South Park is a perpetual edgelord teen show imo - it attracts new crops of edgelord teens and maintains some former edgelord teen fans in its ranks. If it’s still attracting edgy teens, it’s probably doing just fine. What’s been really wild to me is seeing how fast social mores and cultural norms change thru the lens of SP fandom. Cam’s song Changes (written by Harry along with country singer-songwriter Lori McKenna and producers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson) dropped in some parts of the world this morning, and it is LOVELY! It is a twangy country song about growing up and getting out of your hometown and seeing the world change and you with it. I really think Cam buried the lead when advertising this song, as the best lyric is clearly, “I was falling in love in a back seat, giving it away like my heart won’t ever break. Had such a young heart drinking cheap wine…”. Hmmm...does this sound familiar to anyone? Of course it does! Fans had a great time comparing this song to Fearless and We Made It (and, honestly, yes. I agree). But that is not enough music news for Harry: SiriusXM started releasing videos of Harry’s New York performance in February (whoa a lifetime ago), including Kiwi, Golden, and Lights Up. The performances are, as always, ELECTRIC, and I can’t wait to be able to see them live, eventually.  

Zayn is back and he’s posting Better promotion on instagram (the song, not like...he’s doing a better job...oh, you know what I mean). He hasn’t blessed us with any more covers since yesterday, but he’s active, so I think we’ll be hearing more from him very soon….Maybe some of those songs he registered last month? Please???

All I want for Christmas is...for Liam to branch out and add Tech Expert to his resume alongside ‘YouTuber’ and ‘Tik Tok sensation’? Well, maybe that’s a hyperspecific demand, but it seems like I’m in luck! Liam will be joining the speaker line up of Web Summit 2020, which is a program which “brings together the people and companies redefining the global tech industry”. Liam *is* a recording tech expert, but that’s probably not what they tapped him - this is likely to do with the way he is putting on consistent and quality virtual concerts in a way that has massively transformed the potential for fan engagement in socially distant times. Congrats, Liam, because you’ve worked really hard! And he’s not done working! Liam took to instagram to call fans “detectives” for figuring out that his Christmas collaboration was Dixie D’Amelio, and promising “fun” leading up to the Holidays with “Dixie and her family” (uh, do you think that her parents are gonna be involved or just her super successful 16 year old Tik Tokker sister Charlie?). Anyways, as much as I would LOVE to say that we are indeed detectives (because we are!) , the credit for letting the cat out of the bag this time goes to Dixie herself, who posted a Tik Tok of her singing the song. This, on top of the speculation that already existed, was all the confirmation we needed to know what was happening. Liam also filmed a few episodes of a podcast Happy Hour with veteran YouTuber JaackMaate on his show, where he and his friends chat with people about their jobs and their lives in a relaxed way. And! If you bought tickets to LP Act 3, check your inbox - Liam has sent information on how to access the concert, and also some pre-emptive tech support links. I don’t know if that’s a good sign or a bad one.

Niall was, again, very busy with promo, appearing on Live with Ryan Secrest and hitting all of the Royal Albert Hall talking points we’ve been hearing, but he also took the time to interact with fans on Twitter! He tells us that he’s not going to be doing anything for Halloween (“can’t go anywhere in big groups”), that he loves Bruce Springsteen, and that he’ll do a live striptease if “Slow Hands” passes a billion streams by next week. Look, I know I keep saying this, but, uh #PLEASEdontstripitdownNiall. BUT! Do show us more of your skincare routine, which is what he did on insta: he posted a pic of himself in a facemask saying, “You’ll all be saying after RAH, ‘Niall you were glowing!’ and I’ll say… ‘I know’”. 

And, Louis showed us how quickly he works when he has a goal in mind: after the unfortunate matter of merch shipping only to certain regions of the world yesterday, Backstreet Merch (the company in charge of his stuff) quickly took to twitter to say that, “We will be expanding our shipping zones to all of South America and India...within the next 48 hours.” And that’s exactly what happened! Not only that, Central America and Singapore are also on the list (catch ALL OF MY FAMILY rocking their Walls merch), although Mexico is not, and Backstreet Merch has said they have no current plans to ship to Mexico, which, hmmm. But look, I just gotta say that in 48 hours, Louis listened to his fans who have supported him (he sold out TWO stadiums in Argentina!) and quickly made his merch more accessible. Honestly, I love this man. And those countries certainly deserve it – can your country say Walls was its best selling album last week? Argentina can! Both Harry albums and Heartbreak Weather were also in the top ten.

However, I may have said good riddance to Celebtm too soon ( :{( ). TMZ has picked up their second mess of an article and is now distributing that. On top of this, Michael Straus has contacted both Judge Judy and the People’s Court to see if they can get some cable airtime and settle the small claim on TV - which, to be clear, Briana has to agree to, but it seems likely. Celebtm (despite saying yesterday they weren’t going to report on this until January when the court case happened, okaaaay) made a statement telling Briana to take the TV offers seriously so that Louis’ “child support” (quotes theirs, not mine) wouldn’t go to her legal fees. They went on to say, “We only see #onedirection here. To #EndIt on television and win your freedom to love ❤️ again with the next victim. Thank you #1DFamily for supporting #louistomlinson during these chaotic #1D times”. We DO support Louis, which is more than I can say for celebtm. It might bring a little thrill to see a media outlet proclaiming End It, but is it a good thing for Louis? No. This is happening because of the response they're getting and unless someone makes them (mark this down cause you won't see me saying this usually but omg LTHQ will you please get in here and shut this talk down?) they won't stop with this nonsense (see: yesterday's Larry Stylinson article) until the fans stop cheering them on. Speaking of nonsense on Instagram, Lou the golden retriever, the influencer dog fans headcanon-ed was the one HSHQ posted, decided he wanted a piece of the pie and has joined the swollen ranks of accounts falsely claiming a connection to Harry. There are many, including deuxmoi who post an endless stream of made up stories, but also the occasional credible sounding fan report such as yesterday's of Harry at a gym in the UK, and, um, WOW! It’s one of those fitness classes where you alternate your running pace to accelerate your heart rate, and the fan account claimed that Harry’s base pace (that is, comfortable running pace) is 10 mph, which is a 6 minute mile, or a 5k in 18 minutes. Uh, WHAT?? Guys, that’s it: I’m officially a stan, I love this man, and I want to go on a run with him.

THE TOO GOOD TEN with TATUM SCOTT

3 days before her 18th birthday the rising singer/songwriter Tatum Scott found herself entering the studio to record her debut EP. The project, titled Dear Future Me found Scott making sense of her world within an acoustic and introspective form. Less than a year later saw Scott release her latest single, “goodbye guy” which marked a starch contrast to her previous releases through upbeat melodies that combine acoustic guitar riffs and light synths. The North Carolina native continues to develop her sound as she takes on the next chapter of her life: college. She joins Too Good Music to answer some questions and take on the latest Too Good Ten interview. She discusses everything from the new single, how she used Instagram to land an audition with The Voice, how she balances music, school and her social and so much more. 1. Let’s start from the beginning – what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

TATUM SCOTT: My mom has always been musical and plays the piano by ear so she definitely gave me a love for music and it came naturally. When I was little I would always look up to Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. I always wanted to be just like them. I remember when Carrie Underwood won American Idol and I would always tell myself that I am going to be on that show one day.

2. How has growing up in North Carolina influenced your music? Do you see yourself staying there for a while?

TS: It has definitely been tough growing up in a small town in NC, because there is obviously not a lot of opportunity so I have had to do the best I can musically. I play as many gigs as I can and record my original music in a local recording studio so I am grateful that I have access to that. I grew up here so this place will always been home, but I will not be staying here because I feel like there is so much of this world that I have not been able to see and experience.

3. How do you balance pursuing music, having a social life and also going to school? Any advice/routine/tips you found that work well for you to be able to balance them all?

TS: I really try to balance everything out especially because all of these things are important. I really try to set aside time for everything and make sure I am giving enough time for these things.

4. Congrats on the release of “goodbye guy” – what’s the story behind this one?

TS: Thanks! “goodbye guy” is a super quirky and fun song that is about teenage love- so many people ask me what the story behind this song is and they make assumptions about who it is about and I always tell them it is not about anyone specifically - Its just in general like when I think I am falling for someone and I think he is falling for me. Because there is a line in the song that says “sometimes I fall too fast” before I can really know how someone really is. and that line is so true and I feel like it is relatable too- and then the song goes on to say “is love really blind or am I to the goodbye guy.”

5. “goodbye guy” follows up 2020’s EP, Dear Future Me that contained two acoustic driven songs that are distinctly different than this most recent release. How did you approach “goodbye guy” differently than those two?

TS: So my EP Dear Future Me shows definitely more of my chill side- and it’s more of me telling my story about growing up and becoming an adult and its very laid back.. both of the songs are acoustic driven which fully separates the EP from the single "goodbye guy.” They both show two completely different sides of my personalty which is so cool. So I definitely think I have found my voice in this specific style.

6. How did the pandemic affect or adjust your plans as an artist? Were there plans to release more music initially?

TS: The pandemic really motivated me to keep going and keep writing because I had a lot of down time. I did several livestreams like this with different artists and connected with so many people which was super cool.

7. You’re currently (19) and so you grew up with social media and information at your fingertips. How has it been growing up in the digital age? Anything you wish would change about social media going forward?

TS: Social Media has definitely made a huge impact on me especially being a musician. I have met so many people- You can market yourself, you can contact anyone using hashtags and whatnot. For example when I was about 16 The Voice casting page was hosting this thing called the InstaBlinds on their official casting page for Instagram. It was like blind auditions but through Instagram. And people had to post themselves singing but they could not show their face so it was like an actual blind audition. I obviously wanted to do this and decided to post a video of me using the hashtag InstaBlind. I didn’t think that anyone was gonna see it considering the fact that hundreds of people posted and they could only choose 6 winners to compete on their Insta Story using polls to narrow it down to 3 to compete again for the red card for a live callback in NYC. So I ended up being one of the three winners which was crazy to me and from there I got a callback.

8. If you had the ability to headline any music festival or musical event – which would be a dream for you to perform at?

TS: Coachella!

EPISODE 32: A MAJOR OCCURANCE

The sound of spooky intro music plays and fades out. As the microphone clicks on, faint sounds of water and traffic can be heard in the background.

JADE: Hello cryptwizzlers, cryptrackers, but never cryptormentors because we’re all friends here. Welcome to a very special episode of Cryptwins in which we are not actually researching a cryptid. But! Before you shut this off and call us hacks, we are instead researching the recent disappearance of social media fitness guru; Edison Major.

More spooky music plays. There is also the sound of fingers tapping a rhythm. It's typical Joel, unable to contain his energy as he taps the dashboard in time with their intro music.

JOEL: Weeeeeeeell...Maybe we are hacks. —a pause as he laughs— Nah, just kidding. This is the real deal. I'm not sure you're ready for this. This is some spooky, and excuse my French, spooky shit. Tell us more about this Major disappearance? —another laugh— Get it?

JADE: [A short laugh-sigh is let out at Joel’s joke.] Okay, before we begin, two things. One, get ready for the barrage of major and minor jokes, courtesy of Joel here.

JOEL: Got a whole list, be ready! He lets Jade finish, but listeners can still hear the tapping sound while she speaks.

JADE: Secondly, we’re still on the road here, so if the audio is bad or choppy... deal with it? —another small laugh— Anyyyyway. Spooky is right. This all began in September of last year, when @majored posted a picture of himself in a dark basement wearing a weird costume and then immediately went off the grid. And, you know, I’m all for a social media cleanse, people do it all the time. Buuut, what really brought this to our attention was a month later, on Halloween Eve of all nights, when a video popped up of him getting his ass kicked by someone in a Kakashi Hatake costume.

JOEL: Now, I know y'all are asking yourselves "Isn't he a fitness guru? Why was some weeb kickin' his ass?" And to that I say hey! Some weebs are strong, some are Super Saiyan, and others are Kakashi Hatake, the most talented ninja in Konohagukure.

JADE: lets out a laughing wheeze.

JOEL: We don't endorse fighting here. But I digress —a laugh— back on topic. So this guy just up and disappears out of nowhere? And there's not a peep of him until we see Kakashi givin’ him the business. What does this all mean?

JADE: Okay, so, let’s get the full story. @majored goes off the grid, comes back to get his ass kicked by a Naruto character, disappears again, comes back to spit on someone and call them a see you next Tuesday, and then disappears again. And he hasn’t come back online. So what’s up with that? Well... we did a little digging.

Another spooky noise plays over the sound of Jade organizing a stack of papers.

JOEL: Daaaaaaang. I’d say those are some fightin' words, especially from someone who keeps pulling a vanishing act, don’t ya think?

JADE: They really are! I mean, he is from New Zealand, but even so, I think you don’t use that word unless you want to attract some attention. -She clicks her tongue as she gets back on topic- The video was originally posted the night before Halloween of last year, by @ime.are on Twitter. Obviously they got a lot of hate and questions after posting this, but all of them were left unanswered. The only person in the video that was tagged was Major, but upon further examination, this Ime seems to follow and have pictures with someone who happened to be dressed as Kakashi that same night, which has led many to speculate that these ninjas are the same person.

JOEL: So we all know Halloween's a spooooky season. Perfect for parties and all that jazz. But all those costumes make it a perfect time for disguises. Was that even the real Major? Was the person who spit the real Major? Who is this Ime and how do they fit into the story? And who— a pause for dramatic effect and muffled laughter as he tries to stay serious— is this mystery ninja? Tell us more!

JADE: Alright, alright. So this mystery ninja goes by Abel, or @_kllledbycain on the Gram. At first glance, they look pretty much like every other TikTok e-boy; black and white photos, pet snake, the insinuation that they’re dead, whole nine yards.

JOEL: snorts when Jade announces their handle, and again at her eboy comment, wheezing. It's true, it's true!

JADE: And this stuff is so common right now, so nothing really raises any eyebrows, right? Right? Well, tell me, why would a Tik Tok goth go around beating the crap out of a random influencer? Stay tuned for the theory. First, we’re gonna take a step back and look at the whole situation, because, of course, it doesn’t end there.

JOEL: Ohhhh snap! I'm on the edge of my seat, and I bet our listeners are too.

JADE: [clears her throat] So if we go back to the original poster of the video, @ime.are, and we take a look at their Insta, who is on it but... @devinitely? Okay, so @devinitely is in the same place as @majored, clearly, and, for anyone that doesn’t know, she’s been doing a bunch of collabs with @loganvance. This places not one, not two, but three influencers all together in this place where weebs are running around assaulting people.

JOEL: Okay. Okay, I need to know! Where are they? What's bringing all these influencers together? Are @devinitely and @loganvance part of something much more sinister than it seems? [He makes a funny face at Jade and wiggles his fingers, before dropping his voice to a stage-whisper.] Is it some kind of twisted influencer cult?

JADE: Shhhh, Joel, spoilers.

JOEL: [He laughs.] Sorry, sorry!

JADE: [muffled laughter over the sound of more papers rustling.] So, any skeptics out there might say, oh, well, this Ime Are is just a lucky person who happens to be in the presence of more than one social media personality. However, Devin follows the weeb that may or may not have kicked Major's ass. And, according to a cast photo of Rocky Horror, on her boyfriend's Instagram, both the weeb in question and the hot man that tore the two apart were part of the cast. This would be a great time to mention that a link to the video is in the description, as are all the pictures from social media that I'm referencing.

JOEL: [to Jade but loud enough for the mic to pick it up at regular volume] Oh snap, you got everything together in a link? Like, I could click the link to check it out right now? — A pause as he does just that.— Woah, cryptwizzlers, she's not kidding. Click the link in bio, you won't be disappointed. Okay, Jade...hear me out. Given that it was Halloween, the night of nights. Do you think that...maybe it was all an elaborate event? Was it staged? Is any of this real?

JADE: Oh, my dear brother, always the skeptic. Don’t you think that it’s a bit much for him to stop posting entirely in order to get publicity? And we mustn’t forget the spitting on someone in South Dakota, that’s not exactly his brand. Unless he’s trying out something like Taylor Swift and Reputation but... I digress. No, I don’t think any of this is staged, and I’ll tell you why. Let’s go back to the weird cow print basement post. You know who also happened to post something about some cowboy party? Oh, um, Devin’s boyfriend? A picture of him, Devin, and Logan? Which... puts them and Major in the same place on the night that he disappeared.

JOEL: Not a skeptic! Just trying to get all these questions answered. —A laugh— You're right, that's 180 from the online presence he used to have. All theories aside, —a pause— I'd love to go to a cowboy party. Get me a glow-in-the-dark cowboy hat. You know they make 'em. —He laughs again, mouthing 'what?' to Jade.—

JADE: Oh, def. We're getting matching hats. Check out our merch in a few weeks —she laughs— Glow in the dark mothman themed cowboy hats, talk about a niche.

JOEL: Snap, we have to do that now, 'cause I want one real bad. But okay, back on track. This cowboy party. The origin of this theory, yeah? Oh snap...what were those three doing in the same place as Major? And all in cow print too? That's....majorly suspicious! [He trails off into laughter, his voice doing that wheezy thing when someone's trying to finish their sentence before cracking up. Recovering, he adds the following.] Wait, wait, wait. What about—

JADE: Yes, yes, yes. —she cuts Joel off as though he's finished his sentence, chuckling at his joke— Patience, my dear twin, we will get there. —the smile is evident in her voice—

JOEL: I feel like somehow, I ended up as your Padawan for this episode. — he laughs—

JADE: You heard it here, I'm absolutely schooling Joel this episode. — she laughs— First, we're going to backtrack all the way to the original poster again. You know we snooped their whole page, and they're pretty regularly posting pictures with this person, @rengaaay, who isn't an influencer but she makes some of those sick ass roller skating videos... this isn't sus, just cool, link in the description. —a slight pause as she tries to get back to her train of thought— Anyway, what is sus is that she tags two people in her photos all the time... But no joke guys check out their Insta profiles they look different in like every other picture. Which, uh, could just be editing but also could be something.... more sinister? Hold onto that thought.

JOEL: That's such a good handle, dang! Better than @lumberjoel, honestly. I have to say I'm jelly. We should get branded rollerskates, maybe @rengaaay can advertise for us if we ship them. JK...unless? —more laughter as he waits for Jade to get back on the train and pulls up the profiles in question to take a look for himself— Huh...is it editing? Are they masters of disguise? Makeup professionals? —He starts to say something else but is pretty sure he's figured out where Jade's going with this.— What could be more sinister than human chameleons?

JADE: [The sound of papers shuffling can be heard] Oh, yeah, so, it's weird but I think every time the siblings are in a pic together they look more like each other? I dunno if this really makes sense but seriously dudes check the post with this episode because it has a bunch of photos side by side and... yeah. You pull a photo of them by themself and it's like okay, I know what this dude looks like and then you put them side by side and... I dunno, makeup? Contacts? Cloning, mayhaps? And, just so that I'm not just holding on to one thing too much... check their post from August 12th, linked below. Their brother... doesn't have a shadow. Why would you edit that out of a photo? No way are they going that hard to be memelords.

JOEL: Okay, let me look at this. Wha— That's weird as hell. How much hair dye do these two use? Hm. Could be clones? —snaps his fingers—Definitely clones. —he snorts loudly, laughing before clearing his throat— Ahem, uh. No shadow? That's dedication! I dunno, maybe it's some new challenge for the 'gram. Oh...but wait. I found a video. Look, Jade. No shadow. In a video. What the—

JADE: A video, guys. —A moment of muffled laughter before her mic cuts out, but the sound of it clicking on again is followed almost immediately— This is a big family, guys, and a big weird one because their other brother @sleepyfinch... Okay, wait, he himself is pretty normal, super cute, shout out, but guys, ghouls, you know who he has tagged in a recent post? Yet another influencer. Except this one is from Italy? @gaborealis; essentially, he’s a medium, so if you didn’t believe that the supernatural were at play beforehand... buckle up.

JOEL: Wait, wait, I'm still on the video thing. Who has time to edit a video? —his voice cracks when he says video and he covers his laughter as he focuses—

JADE: [wheezing] Shut up —there is no malice in her voice, and she’s laughing too.—

JOEL: So weird, I love it. Oh snap— the @gaborealis? It's time to get ghosty! —echoes "ghosty" and hums the Cha Cha Slide tune for a couple seconds— Okay, so wait. Does this mean everyone's favorite medium is also in the same place as...three? Three other influencers and this weird family of....maybe shapeshifters? No? Too crazy a theory?

JADE: You know what they say, cryptoddlers; no theory is too crazy. Everything Einstein came up with? Theory.

JOEL: Bringing Einstein into it, huh?

JADE: Oh you know it. —a snort— Anyway, according to Devin’s boyfriend’s Instagram, it doesn’t end there. @spencerkeahi, a youtuber and disability rights advocate who comes from Hawaii is also there with that gaggle. Shout out to @elidrising for tagging people and location. So what are these influencers from all corners of the globe gathering together for? Well, let’s take a look at the original poster again. You go on their Twitter, and a few months back it’s all just videos of people... fighting? In some sort of underground place. Mayhaps... the same creepy basement that Major posted his last photo? —a small gasp, as though she’s surprised by this— No, that must be a coincidence... or is it?

JOEL: @elidrising is the man, dang! Are you tellin' me there's a...—he lowers his voice to a whisper— secret influencers-only Fight Club? I wouldn't put it past @devinitely TBH. Honestly, I'd join one...even though I guess I've broken the first rule but talking about it, huh? Actually— Jay, do you think we'd even be allowed to join? Are podcasters influencers? Poll in my story right now, let us know what y'all think.

JADE: Right now? Joel, this isn’t going up for another week, at least. —She’s obviously trying to sound less amused than she’s coming off— Once we get the blue check we’re influencers, so we’ve got a few million followers to go, I think.

JOEL: Yeah, right now! They'll hear that when the episode goes up and respond in real ti— Oh, no. You're right. Oops. No poll in my story, y'all. False alarm. Blue check, huh? You heard it here, cryptwizzlers, we're gonna get that blue check. Tell your friends, tell your family. Heck, tell that cute barista at your coffee shop to listen to our podcast! JADE: Okay — the shuffling of paper is heard once more — We start in September: @majored goes off the grid after posting a creepy picture of himself in a weird outfit in a spooky basement. This is around the same time that the Scarlet Surfer was in NYC for fashion week, which @majored accompanied him to, meaning that it isn’t entirely out of the question for him to still be in New York. Also on social media at this time is @devinitely and @loganvance also both is cowboy outfits, though the creepy basement is absent from both of them.

JOEL: I guess September isn't too early for weird Halloween stuff to start? What with the spooky basement and everything. Right? And everyone loves a cowboy moment— or have cowboys become the new clown? I heard there was a clown renaissance and people like them now? I don't really know where we stand on the whole clown— what?

JADE: I see our next hot debate. Cowboys: Hot or not? Personally, I liked cow print, but I can see cowboys going out soon. Once they reach killer clown status is when it’ll be ideal for me.

JOEL: Personally, I vote hot. And uhhh, not to kinkshame you Jay, but killer clowns are a no from me.

JADE: [tsks] Kinkshamed, by my own brother no less.

JOEL: [a loud laugh] You know I'm just kidding. No kinkshaking, ya heard? I'd literally let the Jersey Devil step on me so. To each their own.

JADE: [snorting] Um, gross.

JADE: Now to October: There is a production of Rocky Horror, a cast photo is uploaded to @elidrising, the account of @devinitely’s boyfriend. This places not only @devinitely and @loganvance in Montauk, but it also places @crispyboiz and @_kllledbycain in Montauk too. These are two of the people that are suspected to belong in the video by @ime.are, in which (suspected) @_kllledbycain, dressed as Kakashi Hatake attacked @majored, only to be torn apart by good citizen @crispyboiz. This video is the first that we’ve seen of @majored since his last post, and he offers nothing in response to it.

JOEL: Okay. Okay. Now, you know I love a good shadow-cast of Rocky Horror. I've always wanted to play Frank. I would rock that part. Am I wrong? —he laughs— But okay, that's - count 'em - three influencers in one place? If @elidrising is there, we can assume @devinitely is too because she was in the same location as, uh, whatshername? Logan? And that's the same location as @ime.are. Who took the video of  Kakashi kicking @majored's ass. @_kllledbycain— more like killedbyKakashi, eh? Seriously why are all these people together?

JOEL: [as an afterthought] It's gotta be a cult.

JADE: November to December: Nothing happens with @majored, @ime.are also offers nothing except for quote unquote “#teamkakashi”, which is funny because they never tagged Kakashi, but anyways. Upon deeper inspection, there are videos on their Twitter from last May, of people in a fighting ring. And then people fighting on a lake? But the fighting ring looks super dangerous and I dunno, like you said, cult-y? Fight-club-y? Call it what you will. In any case, we are led to believe that this fighting has been going on for some time in the background.

JOEL: Okay, come on. That’s definitely a cult. I’ve seen the movie, can confirm. — he groans— Literally what is an Italian astrologer doing there? Wait, wait, wait. Montauk? You said Montauk. Montauk, as in on Long Island. As in like —he drops his voice to a stage-whisper— the part of Long Island that peeps believe to be the site of a government cover-up involving kidnapping, mind control, and time travel? The part that inspired Stranger Things? That Montauk? Snap. I can’t believe I didn’t put two and two together sooner. Jade, Jade. What if this is, I don’t know, like, MKUltra 2.0?

JADE: Yes, yes that Montauk, I’m glad you picked up on that. Look, I’m not saying that it’s an influencer’s-only thing, but I am saying that some might be in the area, and maybe involved. At the same time throughout all of this, we have a culmination of more influencers seeming to know this network of people. @gaborealis, an Italian astrologer, is seen in pictures of @sleepyfinch, who was also in the production of Rocky Horror, and has pictures with @crispyboiz and, god, this name is a freaking nightmare, @_kllledbycain. Not to mention this guy has many pictures of weird… family members? Who sometimes look alike? Okay, but seriously, @kodakola and @sonofpeter, how is your hair not straw at this point? Is it wigs? I think my hair would simply fall out. And y’all using Insta filters or what, cause… I’m not gonna get into it, let’s keep going.

JOEL: Maybe they're makeup vloggers or something. Gotta change up the look for views, right? Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe and uhhhh, smash that follow button— or whatever YouTubers say. —he laughs— Okay but seriously, yeah. @sonofpeter, @kodakola, whatever you two are doing to your hair, let me know because I'm trying to bleach my hair and dye it bright purple without it falling out. And since we're doing it at our next stop, well, your advice will probably be too late. But still, what are your secrets? Is it...clones?

JADE: Joel! —she’s laughing again.— Timeline and then theories. —she clears her throat— After that long silence, a Tweet emerges. January 8th. "Can’t believe @majored SPAT on me and called me a C-Blank-Blank-T when he checked into @SDFamilyMotel last night”. This places Major across the country from where we believed him to be, but acting so strangely that one must wonder… was that really him? Or was it someone that just looked like him? Or was it a cry for help? Nothing’s been heard since from @majored, which I guess… leads us to our theories. —a pause— You were saying… clones, Joel?

JOEL: Sheeeeesh, this is not @majored's year. I gotta say, this sounds totally different from the vibe that this guy used to put out on his social media. Obviously Instagram is fake blah blah blah, you know the spiel, but like. Damn. He spit on them? —a pause as he considers what his sibling has said— You know....I think that's a really good point. Was that even the real him? Will the real Ed Major please stand up?

JADE: I know. It just seems out of character, and terrible for a reputation, but it also would make sense if... One, this is a fake @majored, meant to stir up controversy before he goes underground again. And with an action like spitting on someone and calling them a name like that? Who cares what the dude does after that? Unfollowed, cancelled, whatever. And why would this guy want to go underground, well, I'm glad you're so interested. Well, the official Cryptwins theory is that maybe... just maybe, the crazy, government cover-up Montauk that we all know and love isn't that far from truth. We see that they have means of covering up shadows —she lets out a laugh— and people whose faces just change? And who else is there, @spencerkeahi, someone who explains rehabilitation, maybe someone who has experience helping people get used to being a clone? @ime.are, a nurse who enjoys taking videos of people fighting? It all adds up, people!

JOEL: Yeah, seriously. With the real @majored MIA, there would be no one to combat the backlash from this supposed...clone? Imposter? And maybe that’s what they want. Looks like Montauk isn’t the ideal vacation spot anymore, huh? Even if their seaside cabins are super chill and homey. But I digress. Something sinister is going on. Something bigger than we can even imagine. A secret underground facility that’s...cloning influencers? Training them? Your guess is as good as mine. And that’s why we’re on this road trip, isn’t that right Jade? To get some answers?

JADE: Exactly. —it sounds as though she is holding back a laugh or a cough.— Cross country roadtrip in which we explore different topics like this one, and on the way, we'll document our progress and any spooky encounters. i realize that they can be called the juniorz if they’re all juniors in hs and even after they graduated the name stuck, so... yeah

their vlog/shared channel pretty much documents their friendship (we appreciate good platonic relationships) + have many guest appearances from other friends & family.

they post collabs w/ all four of them on the shared channel, though they also have a series of movie/book/other media reviews, which is really just jl nitpicking everything.

sizhui has a series where he discusses chinese & canto dramas!! he does the videos in mandarin (or cantonese if it’s a hk drama) and adds english subtitles

honestly sizhui can cater to such a wide audience bc of his music that it’s amazing

the juniors started a parody/crack band (oyzz & the boyz, as @yoitsamy put it) but it ended up being good?? and popular??

jingyi’s singing talent + sizhui’s musical prowess honestly carries them

the lans have done legendary covers together while jl and oyzz are just reveling in it all

they have an ongoing joke where they make jl buy them stuff except it’s not a joke bc he does it

i knew i should have done tiktok or instagram first but i have no idea how tik tok even works so snapchat it is

so jingyi is the one who has like a billion stories, but he uses four main ones: our story, my story (basically everyone he has a personal connection to/acquaintances and some og fans), story for close friends and family, and a story for just the juniors. they all have obnoxious names too, but jingyi changes them so much that nobody has no idea what they’re doing.

jl and ljy have a 284 day streak purely bc of their competitiveness. lsz and ljy will sometimes accidentally start streaks but lsz doesn’t purposely send them. 

he has the poop emoji next to all of his best friends on there, but jl is his #1 Best Friend cause of the streaks. plus, the juniors don’t really use snapchat. oyzz has it for the filters but it isn’t public knowledge.

oh dear me. honestly, i would’ve preferred to do reddit or ao3 than this one (are they even considered social media?? i don’t think so but i will have to do a post w/ ljy and oyzz’s fanfiction writing habits.)

oyzz doesn’t use tik tok at all, he doesn’t understand it. jl doesn’t use it either, but refuses to admit that he doesn’t get it and instead just says that it’s stupid.

uhhh jingyi has an acnh tik tok. like. gaming stuff, but it’s mostly him doing acnh stuff.

he also gushes over cute villagers bc he’s jingyi. like, what would you expect??

sizhui probably has tik tok to like all of jingyi’s posts but doesn’t use it himself lol

jingyi posts consist mostly of cute selfies of him and sizhui. honestly their shippers are spoon-fed content cause of jingyi’s obliviousness (he doesn’t realize that he’s practically dating sizhui, at least to the internet)

oyzz has a lot of aesthetically pleasing stuff. pictures of his plants, rays of sun on literally anything, a random cat. it’s not even his cat, where did he get the cat-

jl uses insta to mostly post pictures of himself, like some people do. his look the most professional though, if that makes sense. like if he’s gonna post something, it has to be at his best. cute fairy photos? check. slight makeup? hair done up? vibrant colors/background? lighting? check check check check.

he also has an instagram for fairy, bc fairy deserves nice things. most people chalk up his perfectionism in pictures as him being narcissistic, but jl grew up being relatively famous (their family probably had a reality tv show like kuwtk lol), so he takes social media quite seriously.

sizhui posts food pics and candid photos of the other juniors. it’s basically shipping central, w/ all the adorable posts lsz has.

Can you pls show me some more otome tumblr blogs! I was so hoping for a Vain, Viggo and Zett route... Where is the best otome community site, like reddit or discord or something?

So for community sites. I think this can be pretty subjective so I’m gonna try and like, fully explain pros and cons and why I like it. In my opinion, I would consider Tumblr the best otome community site. I’d say it’s fairly easy to find fandoms on Tumblr and if you want to reach out to people, you can pretty easily do it. However, the biggest reason I love Tumblr is because it’s a very low-pressure social media site. This site allows for a lot of anonymity and I really, really appreciate that. Here I can talk all about how I want Hugo Peers to Wreck Me and everyone’s like “me too” but if I said same things on other platforms, it’d be a one-way ticket to Horny Jail. Jokes aside tho, there’s more anonymity here and the site is better set up for all kinds of posts, in my opinion. One con is tho is that because most interactions on this site happen privately, it can be a little intimidating to reach others.

Discord: Another huge favorite of mine. I absolutely adore Discord. I think it’s an amazing tool for making close friends with other people in the fandom and Discord is honestly such a solid program anyway. You can just go to a place and talk to people with the same interests and just have a good time. The major downside is is that like any group chat with friends, there can be a LOT of drama. I know with the old WH RP server there was drama every so often. Another downside to Discord is is that you really have to already know people to get into servers and I would say there’s bound to be drama and stuff in servers so that’s unfortunately something you can count on happening at some point.

Facebook: I honestly don’t like Facebook in general, but I also really don’t like the Facebook side of the fandom. A lot of people are always so rude and awful on the official SWD page and tbh it’s really soured my opinion of the Facebook side of the WH fandom to the point I don’t want to engage with any of them. I know there’s otome groups you can join on Facebook, however I’ve not joined any of them and Facebook seems like a hella public site where people can easily snoop into you and your life. So I’m not a huge fan of it, but I do have friends who are in otome groups on Facebook and I guess it’s fine since they haven’t left? I don’t know.

Reddit: This is by far my least favorite site. So the pros first bc I have a lot of cons. Certain games can have their own subreddits and it can feel like a more streamlined experience as opposed to tumblr. Now for cons:

If your fave game doesn’t have a subreddit, you either have to start your own or go to the generic otome subreddit

It honestly has the feel of “we’re in a less friendly discord/skype group for a certain game, but everything we say is public record and not private at ALL”

People on Reddit can be a little crazy sometimes.

I’m going to be 100% honest, although I’m subscribed to the otome subreddit, I really only use Reddit to keep up with influencer, make up brand, and make up guru drama so I can consume makeup as ethically as possible and stay informed about content creators bc following all of those make up peeps on twitter and insta is unnecessary and would be exhausting. 

Twitter: Again, I’m not super into the otome scene on Twitter, but I think it’s so-so. Twitter isn’t a great site for writers but great for artists so there’s that. It’s also a SUPER PUBLIC SITE like. Again, if I said something like not even that racy like “I wanna bone Hugo Peers” everyone on tumblr would be like “yeah mood he’s pretty” but if I said that on Twitter I feel like loads of people would just come and kill me On Sight. Not to mention as a queer person, I’m really uncomfortable with Twitter for a lot of reasons that I’m not going to get into. Overall, I feel like Twitter’s good for artists and short shitposters, but that’s really it. 

I can’t speak for other sites like Insta, Tik Tok, and Byte. I’m basically only in cosplay, drag instagram, and love live dance cover insta so I don’t know any otome accounts. Tik Tok is a horrible, horrible app and I think their attempts to silence people who are queer, dark-skinned, fat and/or don’t fit into the very narrow beauty “standard” is fucking disgusting and I refuse to use the app. Byte is a lot better of a video app however I don’t really use it bc I only knew one person on the app and she’s dead now so I just. Haven’t really used it but Byte is lightyears ahead of Tik Tok in my opinion.
