Here's some more from chronic pain!Buck fic - I thought I'd finish it today but I have a test tomorrow and like 5 assignments to do so I'm gonna be a good girl and actually study. In the meantime, here's a snippet:

“I’ve got you,” Eddie murmurs softly. Buck feels so soft, so protected.

His emotions towards the man are fighting to be set free with every act of kindness he displays. Buck is in awe of him. In awe of just how incredibly perfect he is. How he always knows exactly what it is Buck needs, how he has this sixth sense to know when Buck’s struggling and is always there to help him. How he stays even when Buck is being too much. 

Also, Buck loves how fucking strong this man is that he can lift Buck up and deposit him in the bathtub in one swift motion because holy shit. Buck has to fight his body to stay calm. Now is most certainly not the time for any funny business. Buck yelps as Eddie lowers him into the water, expecting to be met with something too hot or too cold but no, of course Eddie has some magical power of making sure the water is just right. 

He must’ve made some noise to voice his thoughts because then Eddie is saying, “Chris always complains when the temperature’s not perfect, so I hope it’s to your liking.”

Buck sinks into the warm water, letting the water soothe his aches. He plays with the foamy bubbles that have gathered on the surface, feeling like a kid getting a bubble bath. He smiles dopily at Eddie as the pain slowly subsides to a more bearable level. “Thank you,” Buck murmurs, closing his eyes and leaning back in the tub.

Ah whatever, feeling extra melancholic by my lack of drive to write anything lately. Chronic depressed burnout brain is no joke fellas! Anyway. This is the last thing I wrote forever ago, part of a darker Buck-centric fic I've been planning to write for a while but will probably never finish. Just felt like sharing something!

Even to his best friend, his person—his soulmate, when he’s being honest with himself—he doesn’t know how to say it. That even at Buck’s lowest, Eddie has never seen him stripped bare, degloved; never seen him as nothing but exposed bone. Raw nerve. Dripping muscle and sinew. He’s never seen Buck as the knife, only as the hand removing the knife. Buck just wouldn’t know how to start, how to explain to Eddie the tightrope he walked for most of his life, nothing but a catastrophe on either side if he fell. Wouldn’t know how to explain that he never learned where to put the anger, so he just let it rot and grow new buds deep in his core, in his gut. That he tries to be good. He wants to be good. He is good. He is good, isn’t he, even with the blood staining his skin, smearing over Eddie’s face? Isn’t he? Isn’t he?

Eddie’s face is unwavering in front of him, bloody hands cupping Buck’s bloody face. 

He wants to say to Eddie: I feel my childhood like a rope around my neck.

He wants to say: I feel my anger like a knife in my stomach.

He wants to say: I feel my fear like a broken bone that never healed.

Didn’t he spend all that time running away from himself? He thought the ghost hadn’t chased him to LA, that it’d finally left him alone. Evan Buckley. Buck, now. Somebody new. Somebody different. Somebody good.

“It’s okay,” Eddie is telling him, fingers slick through Buck’s matted hair, trailing lines of red down Buck’s face. He can feel the sticky path they leave behind, chilly and damp. “We’ll figure this out. You and me. We’ll figure this out, Buck.”

Buck curls into himself, protecting the soft skin of his belly that he’s certain is nothing but a rotted core, that if Eddie touches him there his entire torso will cave in. And the anger he spent years burying will scurry out. 

“You and me,” Eddie tells Buck, a mantra, like this entire situation isn’t completely fucked. “You and me, man. It’s always you and me.”

And Buck wants to tell him: Some parts of me never left my childhood home. They never moved on.

That he’s grown up, but his pain and his anger have stayed the same age.

Hi! I was really hoping to have something new from Single Dads AU to share but I am unfortunately deathly ill (dramatic, I have a chest infection) and my brain has forgotten how words work. So instead, have a little bit of Secret Fic with @hippolotamus, which is being chipped away at!

As he does this, Buck remembers something else about the show, something Hen had mentioned with a grimace in passing. “Hey, you know they’ve just finished filming the last episode? Feels weird that it’s ending, they’ve been doing it for 22 years now.”  Buck lets out a small chuckle, thinking about all the time Eddie’s dedicated to watching every episode. Eddie’s not usually one to binge watch TV series (or to admit to it at least, Buck’s got a sneaking suspicion he’s been watching Survivor behind Buck’s back), so Eddie sitting down to watch 20something seasons of a singular show is a big deal. “It’s going to be sad to see them go right? Eds?” And there it is. Eddie’s ugly secret. The reason he - a grown ass man in his thirties - is curled up in his bed like a kid scared of the dark, clinging to his husband. He bites his lip and squeezes his eyes shut, tries to control his breathing but it’s no good. A high pitched whine escapes, leading into an undeniable sob.  Eddie buries himself further into Buck’s body, hoping his broad frame will absorb the shaking and blubbering. Buck is the one who freezes this time. He’s figured it out. Because he knows Eddie, the pieces have all clicked together. The lightbulb has turned on.

I've been experiencing some chronic pain flare ups and new pain flare ups that had me in the hospital last night (I'm fine...mostly...) so it got me finally writing the Buck's chronic pain fic.

When Buck opens his eyes that morning, he knows it is going to be a rough go.

Ah this is very late but i wrote this from my chronic pain!buck fic yesterday so I thought I'd share. Having a shitty week, or well idk I'm being dumb and sad but oh well here's Eddie comforting Buck which we all need.

He burrows further into the comfort of Eddie’s neck, sniffling. “There’s so much to do,” he says.

“Nothing that can’t be done tomorrow,” Eddie says, rubbing soothing circles across Buck’s back with one hand, the other wrapped softly behind Buck’s neck, holding him gently. 

“I already—already put it off for so long.” 

Eddie pulls Buck away from himself, noticing the way Buck naturally tries to move back towards him. “Hey, look at me,” Eddie says, holding Buck’s face in his hands.

Buck looks up at him, eyes glossy with unshed tears. 

“I have these big arms,” he says, pointing to his arms as he tenses them. “I can do any heavy lifting you need. That includes washing dishes if you so desire.”

Buck huffs out a laugh, but it’s short-lived, his face falling flat as the ache in his leg grows again. He wants the floor to swallow him up and take away every drop of pain from his body. Right now he’d be happy if the floor could just snatch up his leg so he doesn’t have to deal with it. He’s just hurting, and it’s not fair.

This is sort of a headcannon post in which I mention my fic but you don't have to read the fic to get the meta. Also I'm gonna talk about ye olde drugs. If you don't like talking about opium, cannabis or tobacco probably not the meta for you

Now, in the next chapter of Don't Hurt Yourself which I'm trying desperately to write as we speak (I'm failing and pitching my drug based headcannons to you on tumblr dot com as a form of procrastination), I'm going to establish that Ed's not really a smoker. This may seem contradictory to canon, which I like to at least move parallel to for the most part in my fic, because when we're introduced to him we see this

and when he's telling the story to the crew he's doing this

But I personally am not convinced it's tobacco in that big ass pipe. I know it doesn't really matter what he's smoking, they just gave him a huge pipe to make him look cool by putting him in a smokey atmosphere, and so Taika could blow smoke rings, but I like pulling this show apart so I'm gonna talk about it.

Hear me out.

Ed's got three substances that I think historically he would have access to that he could be smoking. Those substances are tobacco, which is what most of us probably assumed if we thought about it at all, good old weed, which transcends time barriers it is a plant which is not that hard to turn into drugs, and opium which was both a drug that got you high and is addictive but also was basically the most powerful pain killer they had access to. A lot like opiates today really.

Now Tobacco is a luxury item from the "new world" back then people like smoking it and would pay lots of money for it to be transported across the atlantic ocean. Makes sense that a pirate crew might be stealing it to sell to somebody to make a buck. However Ed canonically does not treat himself which is why Stede and his fine fabrics and his sugar in the tea is so exciting to him. So somehow I don't think in episode 3 he's smoking up the product he's meant to be moving. He could be but I kinda doubt it.

But Opium and Weed both have medicinal benefits, specifically they are pain killers (weed also has benefits as a psychiatric medication for people with ptsd but I want to focus on the pain killer aspect as Ed doesn't really seem to be in mental distress in either of the scenes we see him smoking in)

We know he wears a knee brace, I know this is to pay homage to Mad Max but from a watsonian perspective it means he's got something going on with his knee, potentially chronic pain. And when he's smoking when we first meet him

He has the leg with the brace stretched out with his other foot on the ground. as if he is perhaps giving his knee a rest because it hurts. What I'm proposing is that he is treating chronic joint pain with either weed or opium, and that's what's in that pipe.

(Also me, oh shit, I did not realise that this means I have to remember what I’ve written. Hmm. This may have been a mistake, I have the worst memory, I really do. Goes and checks out own ao3 profile for the answers…)

Ok here we go.

Nightmares. Oh hey look at that! I’ve actually got a fic with the word in its title, who knew! A spell for nightmares & fractured hearts is a short and fluffy lil fic about Buck helping Chris heal after the tsunami, and then Chris (and Eddie) helping Buck do the same. And because I’m allergic to fluff, I followed it up with part 2 in that series being long, whumpy and angsty. As for falling asleep, cuddling or insomnia, I can’t find anything in my quick search but I think I’ve written all of those in several of my fics, just not as a major part of the plot, more as part of the comfort part after the hurt usually.

Similar answer for chronic pain, I think? I’ve referenced it here and there in various fics but haven’t written on just about that. It’s a little bit too close to home for me, my dad has had 3 hip replacements (first because of major injury as a firefighter when I was 10, he fell through 3 floors in a burning building) so having lived with someone experiencing it, it doesn’t really appeal to me to write.

Buddie and hurt/comfort – um. Pretty much every single one of my Buddie fics?! I filtered my works with that tag and got 30 hits, so…. Here’s one I’m posting right now that I’m kinda proud of Pictures of You, in which Abuela dies post season 6, Eddie hurts and Buck comforts.

Buddie and angst – refer to above answer lol. If I had to choose a favourite, I think I’d choose empty, broken, lonely, hoping, my beloved presumed dead fic where Buck and Christopher are thought to have perished when Buck’s apartment building burns down and Eddie goes through several chapters of angst. It’s unrelenting really, poor guy. 4. Buddie AU – again, I’ve got several depending on your definition.

If you want a truly Alternate Universe, try I Once Was Lost. It’s a Peter Pan fusion where Buck is Peter, Eddie is Wendy Darling and almost all of the other characters feature in Neverland too. It covers from their childhood up until the end of season 5 and I have a particular soft spot in my heart for it.

If you prefer Canon Divergence, try There Walks Darkness. It’s basically What If Maddie didn’t kill Doug and he was arrested instead – and was one of the prisoners who took Buck and Eddie hostage in season 5? It features a lot of hurt Buck, Buck whump, worried Eddie and the 118, some of my favourite tropes to write.

And lastly, if you prefer supernatural AU, try Returned for a shorter read, which perhaps unsurprisingly is based on the movie and tv show… Returned.

Which reminds me of another supernatural AU that I can’t believe I forgot because I adore it! Trust Me, Darlin’ is my first collab, with the lovely @hella-cious! It's a Supernatural / 911 crossover in which Buck runs into an old hook up (Dean Winchester ofc) at a scene in LA and is promptly kidnapped before the 118’s eyes. Lots of angst and whump in this one and while there is Buck/Dean because lets face it, those two are far too hot not to ship together, it ends in Buddie (and Destiel too, for SPN fans!)

ohhh i'd like to hear a bit about bucktommy chronic pain please. ❤️

yayy so it's either a 3+1 or 5+1 fic (haven't decided yet, i have 5 ideas but can't tell if i'll be able to write all) where tommy subtly accommodates buck with his chronic pain. buck hasn't really spoken about it, and even when he has it's been vague, because he fears that tommy will want him to leave his job or even go to bobby or someone else to get them to talk buck into leaving. tommy wouldn't though because he understands how important being a firefighter is to buck.

so he helps him in subtle ways until buck feels comfortable telling him about how much his leg (and other things) really hurts. he makes sure he has a leg rest in front of his couch, one that's super soft so he can rest his leg. he always goes to the kitchen or another room when buck starts talking about something he needs to go grab. and eventually he buys him a brand new knee brace, one of those more expensive n efficient ones, and it finally hits buck that tommy knows and sees him. and buck reveals how much his leg bothers him and tommy gives him the sweetest kiss and asks him what he needs. and buck's never felt so loved.

ITS 911 DAY GUYS ONLY 2(ish) MORE HOURS!!!!

Here’s a snippet of my new WIP which is chronic pain!Buck. Chronic pain!Buck is everything to me so I wanted to write this. Despite not having a flare up in a month (touch wood) I just got beans for this so here you go:

He manages to get himself in a seating position, legs dangling off the edge of the bed. He stops for a moment to catch his breath, clenching his fists to distract himself from the pain that radiates from his joint. Buck turns to the window and is not surprised to see it grey outside. It’s probably going to rain, he thinks. It’s like those “Will you press the button?” questions — you get the ability to predict the weather except your knee wants to kill you everytime you guess right! He has to remind himself how lucky he is again. He’s alive. He can work. He’s alive. He can work. He’s alive— a sharp pain stabs through his knee and he closes his eyes, a tear escaping through his lashes. Maybe now he and the sky can cry together.

More on Buck/Tommy Whump (at AO3)

In addition to my post about the amount of whump resp. hurt/comfort in Buck/Tommy, I've found out a couple of other interesting things. Among those is the fact I haven't tagged some of my own BuckTommy fics with Hurt/Comfort although they are, obviously preferring other tags. That being said, it means that the 86 works tagged as Hurt/Comfort are probably not all there is out there.

I've then skimmed most of those fics and read many of them. I left out the unfinished ones and those who were not mainly Buck/Tommy. Also the ones in which somebody else was hurt, which also occurred a couple of times – in those cases, it was either Eddie, Christopher, Bobby or Chimney. Here's more fun things I found:

most of the fics in which Buck is hurt are Emotional Hurt/Comfort

of which many deal with his parents

a lot of fics that deal with Buck physically hurt focus on episode 5 of season 7, that makes about 9 fics dealing with him choked

he's got a concussion at least 4 times, gets beaten up around 3 times, has a migraine or bad headaches for about 3 times and around 3 fics deal with him having chronic pain.

other injuries include him being shot, stabbed, poisoned; he's suffering from smoke inhalation a couple of times, breaks a couple of bones and even is in a coma once.

Sick fics vary from him having a common cold to appendicitis.

There's one soulmate fic in which Tommy feels all the pain of the canon injuries Buck suffers.

fics in which Tommy gets hurt are mostly focusing on physical hurt, which is different from the Buck ones.

Most of the Tommy hurt fics occur due to him crashing with the helicopter, and he mostly suffers multiple injuries.

Standing out from this are a few fics in which he is in an explosion or hurt while rescuing a cat; I also found one with him having a migraine and one epileptic seizure.

The ones focusing on emotional hurt with Tommy deal with past abuse, sexual abuse and PTSD.

I found about 2 sickfics, he's got a cold in one and a fever in the other.

One fic was about him being permanently injured resp. disabled.
