Steroline:
As I’ve said before I’m very neutral on them. I don’t like them nor do I hate them. They’re just there and the only tolerable pairing by the end of the show.
My feelings for them when they first popped up (for me season 6) were I didn’t like them. It was too one sided and then literally became forced when Stefan was confronted with Caroline’s feelings in season 6. At first he was like “I guess, I’m not dating anyone right now might as well be her” and then they change to “love of my life” in literally an instant which is why I was not a fan of it AT ALL, but it wasn’t a pending issue because we still had to deal with D/E crap and the ringer they kept putting Bonnie through, so while I wasn’t a fan of it, it didn’t muster up enough feelings for me to anti the ship the way that I anti D/E, Benzo, or beremy.
Going to later seasons they were cute and I did love the tie in with where they started to where they ended up because it feels like such a journey, and I love friends to lovers romances but unfortunately, due to Plec’s writing Steroline is not a friends to lovers romance, it’s and insta-love and I hate insta-love’s because they lack substance and you need characters with really really good chemistry for the audience not to notice that it lacks substance, Klaroline is a good example of this. Steroline is not, they did not have the chemistry to pull off an insta-love without the audience noticing but more so, their story doesn’t make sense for it.
Steroline has substance, but it’s never really shown while they’re together because what gives them substance is their friendship which pretty much disappears the moment they get together. They don’t talk like they used to, they don’t share things like they did, they’re just “love of their lives”. Klaroline, while doesn’t make much sense especially at the start, doesn’t have to tear down what was already there because there was nothing there so it’s an easier transition and easier to accept. Steroline had a foundation that was torn away and in a way that disrupted the show and both characters.
However due to the potential they had to be a successful friends to lovers romance I ship. It’s not an otp of mine, but it makes sense to me thus it’s shippable.
Klayey:
So last time I saw either of these characters together it was season 1 on TO, and that’s the last season I watched of TO and had not for BK fanfiction was probably going to be the last I saw of the TVD universe in general. So I haven’t seen them in recent years so my opinion is completely based on season 4 of TVD and season 1 of TO and based on that they are an NOPT of mine partially for the same reason why Klaroline is an NOTP of mine, it contributes to the oppression Tyler and Bonnie, but mostly Tyler.
So, the whole thing with Tyler and the hybrid pisses me off for many reasons and when I explain them I mostly only talk about Caroline and Klaus because they’re the reason Tyler gets shoved off screen so much. It’s mostly because of Caroline and the fact that Tyler has no value to the writers if he’s not with Caroline and they shove him out of the way so she can be with Klaus which would honestly be all well and good with me if a) they weren’t derailing the plot to do so and b) they didn’t cut screen time from more valuable characters to derail the plot.
Anyway tangent over, there’s also the role Hayley and Klayey plays in this oppression by first, Hayley not being able to hire a PI but instead goes for sacrificial murder to find out about her parents. Secondly Klaus having random ass information about said parents based off a birth mark that leads to expanding werewolves through her and not Tyler, a character who is already there with foundation laid who’s just as much of a mystery.
And then add impossible magic pregnancy to protect Hayley from all wrong doing such as leading 12 hybrids to their death to the point that she has the audacity to call Tyler a backstabber, you have a pairing I just can’t like even if they have chemistry and/or are functional . It’s kinda like the Simara thing with me, they were both asshole who karma bit in the was so any “epic love” is lost on me because I can’t sympathize with their characters. Klaus always seemed too entitled but it was manageable because he was a villain and then they changed his character and then he became whiny and entitled (a combination I hate) and Hayley wasn’t winning any awards from me, and together they helped dismantle Tyler’s character and the show literally brings Tyler in for one episode just to do it.
However at their core, just plain shipping without external factors, from what I remember, they were just plain random even in the first season of TO, I didn’t really see much that would endear me to them, they’re entire relationship was based on their daughter which while a strong motivator/foundation there needs to be more. There’s a reason why marriages don’t work when they’re together just for the kids.
