Hey what do you think the Batfam’s reaction would be to you asking them to grab you tampons? Caus I imagine Bruce probably sticks up for periods
Ooh fun.
Bruce: *withdraws one from Bat belt, will get very grumbly if the house is seriously out and buy a ridiculous amount to prevent this scenario*
Alfred: Already had the exact brand one uses in the bathroom unasked and on time. This is both alarming and comforting.
Dick: *automatically gives you hair tie* "Oh wait what?" (pats pockets) *goes and gets them with no drama*
Jason: "Oh." *Goes and and buys mildly useless scented ones* *finger guns*
Cass: Somehow absolutely never has one on hand unless she needs them, will break a bathroom dispenser and hand you fistfuls of them.
Tim: *Goes ridiculously above and beyond, even beats Bruce for insanity, grabs heated water bottle*
Steph: *yanks several options and advil out*
Duke: *keeps some in his bathroom for Izzy* "Don't mention it."
Dami: "Why are you telling me? Wait here." (will loudly go ask Alfred for tampons) "Check under the sink."
#(I sincerely apologize if anything about this response misinterprets your ask#I googled sticks up and still don't understand what that means)#I thought about this#and how most of the Batboys are part of a team with girls#who would kick their asses for being weird about it#batfamily#textpost#batpost#roll call#dick grayson#jason todd#bruce wayne#stephanie brown#damian wayne#alfred pennyworth#tim drake#cassandra cain#duke thomas#asks answered

I have many thoughts on the weird phenomena in the DC fandom and the Batfam fandom specifically where probably the majority of people just straight up. haven’t interacted with the source material. and almost all of those thoughts can be summarized as ‘lmao that’s weird and mildly concerning’.
and because I’m annoying I will list them all here right now <3
1. To preface this post, I mean, obviously, comics are inaccessible as all hell, both in the disability kind of way and the ‘you need to understand the concept of hypertime to fully comprehend the DC timeline’ kind of way. Because of this, even if you don’t have a disability that prevents you from reading comics, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to look at the amount of comics you need to read to have even a base understanding of a character and go ‘no thanks <3′ and just enjoy fanart and fanfic in a vacuum. Ultimately, this is fandom, this is supposed to be fun, it doesn’t really matter.
2. That said, it’s VERY weird to me that the majority of this fandom just straight up hasn’t interacted with the source material, and moreover, that it’s considered rude to tell people that they should do so. It’s especially weird considering the amount of fanon-only fans I’ve seen who straight up have a superiority complex over canon. The idea that it’s gatekeeping to tell fans of something to actually interact with canon is just. so weird, and a fundamental misunderstanding of what ‘gatekeeping’ actually entails.
3. But honestly I’m less interested in discussing the ways in which canon and fanon fans should interact with each other (personally, I think it would be helpful to create separate tags of some kind, but that’d require quite a big overhaul of the current fandom state) than in figuring out how this actually happened in the first place. On the one hand, it’s obvious; long-running superhero comics the way DC writes them have made themselves so thoroughly inaccessible that most people are simply too daunted to even try. Most media has a cohesive beginning and end (or at least, a planned end somewhere). Comics just... don’t.
But I do think it says something that, even among people who are clearly interested in the characters (since they have, you know, entire blogs about them), the effort to get into comics just seems to be too much to even bother. This really doesn’t bode well for the future of DC Comics. Obviously, I am no expert on anything at all ever, but I’d personally be surprised if DC survives beyond the few decades, at least in its current form/without a big overhaul.
4. But on the other hand, I don’t think the confusing state of DC Comics is the only thing to blame here. Fandom has a well-known problem with reducing any character down to archetypes to more easily ship and write fic/make content with. This problem is particularly prominent in fanfic, which, if you read enough of it, you’ll eventually start seeing not just the same tropes and trends, but essentially the same fics over and over again. And not just within the same fandom; everywhere, or every large fandom, at least.
Fanon Batfam is entirely built on a bunch of those tropes; insecure/depressed sadboy Tim, team mom with optional hidden trauma/emotional problems Dick, bad boy with a heart of gold + sadboy combo Jason, abused sadboy Damian/angry easily-villified-for-fic-reasons monster Damian, good dad Bruce for found family fic and bad dad Bruce for angst fic, etc. This all culminates in a found family dynamic that’s generic and malleable to whatever fic the writer wants to write.
(This isn’t getting into the ship fic, which I avoid like the plague because the vast majority of it is incest, but I’d bet real actual money that the tropes in those fics fall under what is often preferred by the Migratory Slash Fandom.)
By having a decent excuse not to get into canon (the inaccessibility of comics) and a, by now, well-established fanon fandom, many fans feel free to use the batfam fandom as essentially an excuse to write whatever fic with reduced archetypes and tropes they personally feel the itch to write, without having to bother with even consuming a canon. This is compounded by the fact that canon itself is often contradictory and frankly bad, meaning that whatever interpretation of a character you want/need to go for your fic is at least theoretically backed up by canon (for example, you can just as easily cast Bruce as an abusive shithole dad who his kids need to get away from as a loving father figure who cares deeply for his children), which you can always use as a defense if people question your characterization.
5. This focus on fandom trends and tropes over actual creativity or care for the characters is also visible in the way bigotry manifests in this fandom; namely, in literally the exact way you’d expect. The female characters and characters of colour are shuffled to the side, non-existent, vilified, and/or reduced to harmful stereotypes.
Barbara is probably the one I saw the most often in fanfic, but usually just as ‘Dick’s girlfriend’, and even then, she was often vilified for Dick angst (especially in fics about examining Dick’s trauma from his canon sexual assault; Kori also often gets the short end of the stick in those). After that, probably Stephanie, who fanon fans don’t really seem to know what to do with, so she’s basically just there as comic relief waffle girl, most of the time, though sometimes she can be used to either further Tim angst or further vilify Tim, whatever the fic calls for. Cass has gotten included more in batfam fics as of late, likely in response to critiques of fandom racism for leaving her out, but again, it’s clear people don’t actually know what to do with her. She’s often reduced to a racist stereotype of a quite, stoic therapist for whatever guy du jour needs it. That, or she’s in Hong Kong and just not there. Duke especially gets left in the dust in fandom, usually just being non-existent, but when he’s there, he’s almost always nothing more than the straight man for the actual fun characters to play off of. Talia probably has it the worst, though, and almost universally gets vilified by fanon stans in order to write sadboy Damian.
All of this is extremely predictable behaviour and falls entirely in line with general fandom misogyny and racism; ignoring or vilifying women and characters of colour, or using them as very minor characters at best. The only two characters of colour who aren’t regularly left out of fic are Dick and Damian, who are both also conveniently the two characters most often drawn and written in a whitewashed manner. In addition, there’s a real trend of demonizing Damian in fanon fics where he isn’t written as an abused sadboy, which I’d argue is in no small part due to fandom racism, considering Damian’s behaviour is in no way as bad as Jason’s, who doesn’t get anywhere close to the same demonization and gets woobiefied instead. I also find it convenient that Damian is probably the batboy who receives the most vilification in fic, when he’s the most obviously non-white of the batboys they’re willing to acknowledge.
Fandom often cries for more diversity in canon, only to ignore the diversity already there and focus on the same generic white guys. The batfam fandom is a brilliant example of this.
Which is not to say that fandom racism and misogyny isn’t present in the canon parts of the fandom (and canon itself); it absolutely 100% is. But I’ve found that canon fans are also more likely to like and care about at least one of the characters I’ve listed as ignored/vilified, and are willing to create and consume content for them, whereas fanon fans... aren’t, really. I’ve never seen a fan of fanon Cass the way I’ve seen fans of fanon Dick, for example. Obviously, this could just be by coincidence, or I’ve just surrounded myself with people like that, but it’s been a trend I noticed. Racism and misogyny is present in every part of this fandom and should be addressed as such, but I feel like it manifests the most blatantly in the fanon parts of this fandom.
(I’d also recommend the articles Migratory Slash Fandom’s Focus and Beige Blank Slates, which expand more on the type of fandom racism I think is especially prominent in the batfam fandom, as well as literally every article in the What Fandom Racism Looks Like series.)
6. All this leads me to conclude that the majority of fanon fans don’t actually like the characters all that much; they’re convenient excuses for them to participate in fandom. Which I also think is, in no small part, a reason why so many of them react so negatively to being told to pick up a comic; they came to this fandom specifically to consume it as a fandom, because they wanted the fandom experience without having to consume a canon.
This is not a phenomena unique to the batfam fandom (again, see the Migratory Slash Fandom), but it does fascinate me. While fandom is often said to be an experience focusing on transformative art, I think it’s also safe to say that, especially as fandom has become more mainstream, an increasing amount of people are looking to it less as a way to engage with their favourite pieces of media, and more as a type of media in and of itself. I think the reasons for this are similar to the reasons mass media entertainment like the MCU are so popular; you gain a lot of enjoyment out of it with very little risk involved.
By consuming the same fics of the same characters (or the same archetypes) over and over again, you are rarely at risk of being challenged or even disappointed. It’s often very clear right from the start whether or not a fic will appeal to you, and if it isn’t, it’s easy to just look for another one. It requires less emotional investment than most other types of media, even ‘popcorn media’ like the MCU - or, yes, DC Comics. It’s safe, it’s enjoyable, it’s comforting, like McDonalds, but just like McDonalds, it’s ultimately bland and unsubstantial.
7, TL;DR. Ultimately, I don’t think it’s like, wrong to enjoy the fanon version of the batfam without wanting to engage with canon, and I certainly don’t think it’s okay to harrass people over it. But I do think it’s in large part based on a desire to interact with fandom rather than other pieces of media because people are scared of being let down by those pieces of media (or worse, just uninterested in actually thinking), which is mildly concerning.
#long post#my posts#infodumping#btw i say this as someone who also has trouble consuming much more than popcorn media/fanfic due to emotional exhaustion#but it's not a healthy habit and it's something people can and should try to break out of#also obviously this isn't about EVERY fanon fan specifically so if this doesn't apply to you specifically great then move on

TIMARI SOULMATE AU THING
-Anything you write or draw on your skin appears on the other’s
--This applies to injuries and cuts
-Tim is older by a few months
-They find out about the connection after Mari’s 7th birthday when they both get sizable bruises on each leg but can only remember causing one
--Que parents explaining what it means and frantic research
--Constant conversations follow
--Both become fluent in the other’s language with in 2 years (and even then people find out after 2 years because sometimes they slip when talking)
--Many inside jokes and weird words they made up trying to understand the other language that only they know the meaning of
-They send notes of worry to the other after bad injuries and notes of encouragement
-Wonder Women basically adopts Mari when she finds out there is an active Ladybug
--Mom used to be a Ladybug so she knows all about the Muraculi
-Mari does still have friends despite Lila’s best efforts
--Lila isn’t a main antagonist though still isn't a good person (I want to focus on more fluffy things so that's why; she is no way a good person or redeemed character)
--Her class support system: Cholé, Alix, Adrien, Kim, Luka, Kagami and Max
--Juleka comes around after hanging out with everyone and talking with Luka
--Nino, Nathaniel and Marc also support Mari but aren’t as open because fear and Nino is on the fence about his Girlfriend
--Jagged, Penny, Clara, Audrey all have a respect and care for Mari
-Tim and Mari have battles of witt on their arms to try to figure out who is smarter
--(Spoiler: they are both insanely smart) it is basically a tie
-Most of the good in person fluff will take place after Hawk Moth is defeated and Mari is the official Guardian
--My girl needs some happiness and good luck man
-Mari and Tim accidentally find out each others identity after they leave themselves notes on their arm and putting the pieces together; however this is often forgotten between stress and more important things
--Because of this though when the Justice League gets a message from Paris, he knows it is real and believes it
--When they find out they don’t tell the other because they understand and respect how important secret identities (this is part of the reason it doesn’t really cross their minds)
--Mari figures out who Robin is; she forgets that Red Robin is a thing so doesn’t look into finding him out
--Figuring out Robin was an accident so she doesnt looking to the rest of the BatFam
--Tim forgets about all the stuff about Ladybug on his arms because living in Gotham has enough to deal with so he tries not to focus on too much at once/has bigger problems
--“I JUST MEET RED ROBIN/LADYBUG” moment in Paris, after a patrol where they run into each other when the League is investigating the plea for help
--The Wayne’s and Diana are there on “official” business but really it is just a cover so they can investigate
--Diana hears about this from both sides as she befriended Mari earlier and finds this a lovely development
---She also figures out that they are soulmates but doesn’t tell them, it’s better if they figure it out themselves
---Does often have a knowing smile when talking to the 2 of them about it though
-It took years before the team decides that they need to contact the League
--This is a few years in maybe 4 going on 5
--Wonder Woman is the one going through the messages and immediately wants to help
--Tim walks in about ½ way through the message and stops what he is doing, immediately knowing this is real thanks to his soulmate
-BATBOIS
--Jason basically gets adopted by the Dupain-Cheng’s after coming to their bakey every morning while in Paris
---Loves Mari and would do anything to protect her
---Loves the fact she can easily flip him like its nothing
--Damiain respects her abilities and accepts the fact she is basically his older sister now
---Both end up becoming very protective of the other in their own ways
---Wants to teach her how to use his blades so badly and to meet all his pets
--Dick loves her from basically the beginning
---Loves her happy and optimistic attitude despite her situation (he can see himself in her a little bit)
---Instant friends and she smuggles sweets to him
--They meet when Dick follows Jason to the bakery one morning
---When Dick introduces Mari to Kori she is taken into a bone crushing hug that everyone is worried about the small girl but she instantly returns and is perfectly fine
----Kori already loves her
--All the boys meet her in Paris at the bakery but Tim and Bruce (Alfred did not come)
--Tim was never awake so they brought him back coffee and Bruce while he did go, she wasn’t there at the time
-There many “dumb” battles of witt have lead to many late night talks
--Anytime the bois need help with a really bad puzzle by the riddler Tim asks his soulmate under the guise of a normal “battle”
---There is rarely context but always a fun time
-Both have gotten a lot of big scars that sorry the other but they have comfort in the fact they know the other is still ok and alive
--Small messages and self care tips/messages usually litter their arm after a particular bad injury/scar
--This always makes them feel better and brings a small smile to their lips on both parties once they get the message they are okay
--Lots of check in messages too after big fights and encouragement
-Team Miraculous
--Ladybug is the leader and tends to be point base for public relations (Mari)
--Chat Noir is the second in command, and is the go to if Ladybug isn’t available
---Adrien has matured a lot and is a respectable force to be reckoned with
---Both of them help train the others and often spare together to blow off steam
--Ryuuko is Kagami, she became a permanent holder at the same time Luka did
--Viperion is Luka and it is after the four become a semntited team that Mari decides they should know each other’s identities
--Queen Bee joins a little but after, she’s a reformed Cholé
---While hesitate at first Mari gets them all to be accepting
---Probably changes name and outfit though, but is a permanent holder
--King Monkey and Pegas are semi permanent holders (Kim and Max respectfully)
---Only not permanent because they want to avoid suspension but are full members of the team
---Also work as civilians, helps with the cover
--Alix also is a part of the team but only as a civilian
---They have considered giving her the Fox
----She helps answer questions and acts as a ground base for the hero’s as she is the main “civilian” the government goes to if they need the team
--They are a really tight team and trust each other fully
--The turtle and fox get used but sparingly
---Ivan might be turtle sometimes
---Nino later might be a good choice too, I’m not fully sure yet
----Fox has been used by Alix and maybe Juleka too but unsure about Juleka right now
--All holders have slight effects from their miraculous
---Mari and Adrein have the most as they’ve had theirs the longest
---Mari has good luck and is able to embed some of that luck into what she makes
----She also doesn’t do well in the cold
----Things tend to grow more around her, especially flowers, almost like they are growing toward her
---Adrien has bad luck (thanks to Mari’s gifts this isn't really bad though) and if not careful can break anything
----Likes to take naps in the sun and is very protective
----Cats like to gravitate to him
---Kagami has lots of extra body heat
---Luka can sometimes predict what is going to happen, can predict a lot of normal everyday things
---Cholé can easily knock people out now, she knows all the right places to hit to incapacitate someone
---Max (weaker cause hasn’t had as long) knows the fastest way to get places and shortcuts basically anywhere
---Kim (weaker cause hasn’t had as long) is able to freerun and parkour with little training
----Can also sense when some chaos is about to happen, however it isn’t to sting yet but does get stronger the longer he has his miraculous
---Alix (has the weakest, but still strong) has the ability to tear apart half truths and lies, she gets this from the fox but also works on it herself after vowing to not let Lila fool anyone she cares about again
-After Hawk Moth is defeated Adrien moves in with the group
--Mostly stays with Mari and Kagami
---Considering moving with Mari when she leaves Pairs
-Mari becomes the Guardian before Hawk Moth is defeated
--It is about when she makes a real team, Fu gives her the knowledge and training she needs
--He’s been doing it indirecting since the beginning (well a few months in) but after she takes initiative with making the team he is more direct
--He waited to make sure she as ready and she is
-Mari plans to move to Gotham to properly meet her soulmate after school
--This is to move the Miraculous and to further her career
--This is one of the biggest motivators to contact the League to get help defeating Hawk Moth
--The team is more than onboard with going with her and follow where she goes
---They are basically family, and family supports family
--This move would also help them with Uni and furthering their potential careers, so it is a win-win for everyone
--They do want to stay a Superhero team after Hawk Moth but more low-key, the move would also give them a chance to be more open about wanting to do this
---They don’t want to step on toes but want to help if they can
-Soulmates in this au (romantic at least)
--Tim and Mari (duh)
--Adrien and Kon (Conner/Superboy)
--Cholé and Kagami (maybe Luka, unsure but I’m a sucker for poly, I could always make it a Young Justice member, any ideas welcome)
--Kim/Max/Alix (we love poly and these are a good trio)
-Kon-el/Conner and Adrien
--For the longest time Adrien didn’t think he’d ever be loved/have a soulmate
---Conner wasn’t around yet so that’s why his connection wasn’t there
--Adrien cried the first time he got a mark he cried
---It made him know there was someone else
---Mari stayed with him the whole night holding him and telling him, she knew he would have someone
--Conner rarely responds, the boy doesn’t know French so it’s kinda hard
---Tim notices the language and offers him help, he is also the one to explain what soulmates are to Conner
--Conner feels bad for his “other half”
---Partly due to the whole secret identity thing
----He isn’t great with people
----His other half seems to get hurt a lot and doesn’t want to be another cause of that pain
--Despite never getting much from his soulmate Adrien always leaves messages of encouragement and validation
--He understands how much that can mean to someone
---He starts to leave some in Englsih too, just in case his soulmate only knows Englsih
----Mari’s idea but he was more than on board for
---He often apologies of injuries he gets
----Conner doesn’t usually notice the injury but the note afterward
-----part of his alien blood is why he doesn't usually feel
------When he does notice he does worry a lot because if he feels it what must have happened to this other person (is under the impression it is a normal civilian)
--Adrien is so happy to know he is loved by someone else, because as Conner may not show it, he has a feeling his other half cares
---Mari is so happy that her best friend has gotten what he needed to know he was loved she cries with him too
----It happens a year or so after being heros so they are close but don’t quite know each others identities yet, but that happens not long after
--Conner is convinced to go and help when the Justice League goes to Paris
---He goes and stays with Tim most of the time
---Tim is the one who convinced him to go and acts as a translator, as Conner has a grasp of the language he isn't too confident
---He does meet Chat Noir but only briefly; both are more focused on the bigger picture
----Both act like lost puppies with Mari and Tim respectfully; and when they get together this doesn't change too much
----They are a really fluffy couple, Adrein needs physical affection and Conner accepts
-How they meet (Tim and MAri) [finally I know]
--They meet as heros before they meet as civilians
--They meet as heros on a patrol before the final battle with Hawk Moth
---This is where the “HOLY SHIT I JUST MEET RED ROBIN/LADYBUG” moment happens, after they get back from patrol they indemnity write the other
----Mari talks to Diana about all this over breakfast the next day
-----they both know the others identity because Diana told Mari so she would trust her because she knew Mari because of her connection with the Miraculous, instant connection
----Wonder Woman figures out they are soulmates through this (Tim had a mini crisis with her that night)
--She “may or may not” leave hint to Bruce to set something up for them
--The 2 are to focused on the final battle to worry about the potential revelations
---While fighting they have instant synergy and chemistry that goes unnoticed by them at the time but everyone else notices and takes note
--Bruce decides to “spontaneously” sponsor a trip for a class to go to Gotham, as a senior/graduation reward for a class that has done a lot for their community
---It is also a way to give a break to the poor kids who have been dealing with this for far to long
---The “contest” is announced about a week or so after the final battle
---Wonder Woman tells Mari about it
---Mari then proceeds to write far more than one would have expected, she really wants her class to have something good finally, and even excluding all the hero end stuff they do it is close to being a novel
----She would have won even if wasn’t a set up
---Wonder Woman tells Bruce which class to choose and doesn’t question it as he trusts her judgment, he also doesn’t question why she is so insistent but completely agrees with her choice
----Diana is the one to tell Mari who instaly is giving her a bone crushing hug which Diana returns in fold
---The whole squad is hyped
----Luka and Kagami pulled some strio “happen” to be going to Gotham themselves
----This is also seen as a great opportunity for them to scout places for them to consider moving after school is done
--They meet at Wayne Enterprise building
---Dick is leading the tour
----Diana may or may not have given him some hints that Tim’s soulmate is in the group
--Lila’s empire is destroyed that week, she tried to lie about the Waynes to the Waynes
---Tries to say she is dating Damiain who is way younger than her and knows nothing
---Conner is staying with Tim because his soulmate said something about Gotham and figured spending time with Tim isn’t bad either
--Identity get revealed on purpose during the trip (probably near the end)
--When Mari sees the boys she is confused but happy to see her new friends again so soon
--Diana is a good support for Mari and a “wing woman” of sorts
--Jason is so happy to she his new “sister” when he crashes the tour to mess with Dick
--Tim is passed out in his office when they pass
---Mari writes a note to her soulmate about how funny it is, this makes Conner look up as he is watching Tim and sees the note appear in his arm
---Mari doesn’t notice but Dick and Jason do
---This leads to the 3 trying to get them to talk
---Adrien catches on and instantly wants to help his bestie meet her boy
----Adrien then tells his soulmate about it later because he wants to and Conner sits straight up and has a huge revelation
-----The boys along with Diana and Mari’s squad set them up and they have a good time and it is really cute

I Loved And I Loved And I - Hanahaki AU
WARNINGS: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH
This is probably the saddest thing I’ve ever written sooo sorry.
AO3 link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24196216
NOTES:
So Hanahaki is a very uncommon disease. Like, it was about normal in the past but it died out in the nineteenth/twentieth century. However, it is possible to get but is very very highly unlikely (like 0.00001% of the population have it) so doctors have been taught how to perform the surgery. It is still a very well-known disease.
For the sake of the plot, you can only have the surgery if you give your full consent (because Bruce seems like the type of person to have the surgery done on his son even if they don’t want it - he’ll do whatever it takes to keep them alive)
I’ve messed up the timelines a lot just so that I can have the Batboys being good bros (but it is an AU fanfic and like Thawne says in the Flash TV Series: The Timeline is malleable)
Also the Invasion happened but Wally survived because I said so.
When Wally West entered Dick Grayson’s life, he did so in a whirlwind of colour. Dick remembered it clear as day. He was standing around in the Watchtower, twitching in his place. Bruce told him beforehand that he would be meeting Kid Flash that night and as excited as he was that he was going to be meeting a potential new friend, he was filled with anxiety. The kids at school, the rich people that attended Bruce’s galas and the people at the Gotham City Juvenile Delinquent Centre all hated him - called him names like “Gypsy boy” and “Circus Freak” because of his Romani background, tanned complexion and thick accent - so why would someone with literal superpowers like him? Then it happened: the room was filled with reds and golds and oranges - lighting up like a blazing inferno - and when the colours died down, all he could see was a red haired ten year old wearing gold and scarlet and a bright grin. When their eyes met, Dick knew that Kid Flash was going to be special.
_____
Dick was fourteen years old when he realised it. He was lying on his bed, hair mussed and wearing his favourite elephant print pyjamas with mismatched canary yellow and crimson socks, telling his parents about his day. It became kind of a ritual for him to either sit cross-legged in front of the Flying Graysons poster that was pressed protectively by a bulletproof sheet of glass, clutching Zitka against his chest, or to just lay on his Egyptian cotton sheet, just staring at the ceiling as he recounted his day. He was at the part where he and Wally were sitting on a park bench, eating ice cream when he was suddenly struck by an image of his best friend smiling at him with windswept hair. How the late afternoon sun caught on the edges of his ginger hair, embroidering it with gold. How his emerald eyes, framed by amber lashes, suddenly looked much more captivating, more beautiful, and Dick wanted their green gaze on him at all times. He was suddenly struck by the urge to grab Wally’s cheeks, to trace the pads of his thumbs along his galaxy of freckles and kiss him until -
Wait, what?
Did he seriously think about Wally like that? About kissing him? Wallace Rudolph West - his best friend - the guy that ran into a wall the first time they met, the guy who makes terrible science puns and flirts with anyone that moves and thinks nine times out of ten with his stomach than his head and is smart and loyal and funny and kind and the most amazing person Dick has ever met.
Uh oh. He’s in trouble.
_____
The trouble with falling in love with your best friend is knowing that nothing would change but everything will. If they started dating, they would still have movie nights, eat terrible junk food and spend hours on end playing video games but if Dick confessed and Wally didn’t reciprocate then he ruins one of the best relationships he’s ever had just because of a few hormones. And - oh God - what if Wally feels guilty? What if Wally thought that he was leading Dick on, making him think that he liked him like that? What if he started beating himself up for breaking Dick’s heart?
No.
Dick would just have to stay silent. To just hope that his attraction with his (absolutely amazing in every way) best friend was just a silly little teenage crush and will just go away in time. After all, Batman says that the mission comes first.
___
“Hey, Dick.”
“Yeah, Wally.”
“We’re gonna be bestest friends forever and ever, right.”
“‘Course we are. Why wouldn’t we be?”
“D’ya pinky promise?”
“What’s a pinky promise?”
“It’s what the kids do at school. It’s when you put your pinky fingers together and make a promise and you must never ever break it.”
“Why? Do you die if you do?”
“No, I don’t think so. But it’s just really really bad if you do. Like stepping on a puppy’s tail bad. So do ya wanna do it.”
“‘Course I do.”
“To being bros forever.”
Dick smiled at the ten year old in front of him as he interlocked their pinkies, “Bros forever.”
___
“Yo, Dick, I need your help,” Wally said to him after the Team had completed a mission in New York where this generic mad scientist villain was using robots to terrorize the city and commit crimes. Wally managed to nab a damaged drone as a souvenir and now Dick was in the process of reassembling it and turning it into a robot that shoots out chocolate sauce. Wally was adorably confused when he looked over the acrobat’s plans but Dick told him that it was going to be asterous.
There’s another thing about falling in love with your best friend: you can’t exactly escape them. You spend time with them everyday which makes you notice things: like how their eyes crinkle at the sides when they smile, how their voice always goes up around three octaves when they’re embarrassed, how they always bite their bottom lip when they’re nervous. Dick always noticed these things about everyone, Bruce had him doing character profiles since he first started training as Robin (no, seriously. The day he met the League, he was told to give a full analysis of their characters, as well as possible strengths and weaknesses and ways to take them down, the moment he returned home. He was eight) so that he could always find out everything he needed to know about a person within ten seconds, but earlier he just noticed them - now he noticed them and it made him feel all kinds of butterflies in his stomach.
“Names, KF,” Dick chided without looking up from where he was turning a screw, regardless of the fact that they were in his room that was encased with 20 cm of lead so no one with super-hearing could figure out their identities.
“Oops, sorry, Rob. Anyway, I need your help.”
“Shoot.”
“I wanna ask out Artemis.”
Dick almost dropped his screwdriver. He looked at his best friend, who was standing by the door of his room. That red hue that covered his cheeks was so adorable that Dick barely resisted the urge of getting up and kissing the daylights out of him. But wait, no. Artemis. Right, Wally wants to ask out Artemis, not him. Honestly, he could see it. They were always trading insults with no real heat. He guessed all of that teasing was unresolved romantic attraction, a courting ritual for superheroes - Catwoman has always had a bantering relationship with Batman.
“Okay, why are you here then?”
“I don’t really know how to ask out girls.”
“You flirt with M’gann all the time.”
“Yeah, flirt. Not ask out. Or like, date.” (Date. Why does that word hurt so much?)
“Neither do I.”
“Yeah, me neither.”
“You’re the son of a playboy billionaire. You must know something.”
“Well… (Dick? Dick? What are you doing?) You could practice on me.” (What?! Why the hell would you say that, Grayson?)
“Al-alright then,” Wally let out a deep exhale and strode directly in front of Dick with a smirk on his face, “So, ughh, hey. Wanna go out for ice cream later or something? (Yes. Yes, God, yes.) Yeah, that felt right. I think I’m gonna go ask her now. Thanks, Rob. You’re the best!”
When Wally hugged him, all he wanted to do was melt into that comforting warmth and stay there forever.
___
Batman made sure to prepare him for everything - how to survive kidnapping if you’ve lost your sight, what to do if you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere with limited supplies, where to go if the League had been compromised by their evil alternate dimension counterparts (apparently something happened before he came into the picture, something about a good Lex Luthor and the Crime Syndicate?) - but he could never have been prepared for his first heartbreak.
__
Dick was no stranger to pain; he likes to think of pain as some sort of old friend - in a weird, twisted way - because it’s the only thing in his life that was constant. The only thing that he could rely on to always be there for him, that would never truly leave him. Yes, he knew that that mindset was unhealthy, but he held onto it because to get rid of pain was like getting rid of a shadow - impossible and only attainable in absolute darkness, when you’ve lost all sense of direction.
Dick walked into the communal area, ready to have a fun-filled day with his best bro in the universe. Ever since Wally and Artemis had gotten together, all of their bro-time had seemed to be on the back burner: afternoons spent with Dick hunched over pizza and trading pixelated blows on Barry and Iris’ TV were replaced with movie dates with Artemis, hanging out in the park with him with trips with her to the mall, playing basketball in the court in the Manor gardens with days spent at diners and cafes with her - hell, he can’t even sit next to him because everytime he entered a room where Wally was, she was snuggled up next to him with her head on his shoulder (the same shoulder Dick used to cry on after a nightmare). He longed for the days the two of them would have karaoke sessions, heads banging vigorously up and down as they strummed their air guitars like their lives depended on it and screaming old 80s bops until their throats ached but even when they were together it was like all of the red head’s attention was on her, what with him on his phone either texting her every five minutes or having hour long conversations or simply just directing every conversation to be about her (“Hey Dick, where do you think I should Artemis for date night?”, “God, why does she always talk about my eating habits? I’m a speedster - I need the extra energy for my enhanced metabolism. Girls, honestly.”, “Oh my god, Dick, you should’ve seen the look on Arty’s face when I hit her during our date at the paintball arena. You were right, she loved it.”). The more time he spent with her, the more he was pushing Dick away with a sheepish “maybe later, dude” and Dick gets it. Artemis was a brilliant fighter, a real asset to the team. She wasn’t broken and had mental breakdowns and panic attacks at inconvenient times - it’s no wonder Wally prefered to be with her. He always thought that maybe the only reason Wally was with him was because of his sad backstory - the poor orphaned circus boy who watched his parents die at eight years old - it was enough to make anyone take pity on him. So he just did what anyone would do, he smiled and nodded (he’s a performer - has been since he’s learned how to walk - acting happy is just another role he has to play, another way of keeping his audience interested), gave his advice and hoped and prayed that it was enough to make sure he wasn’t left in Wally’s dust.
“Hey, Wally,” he greeted, walking up to them. Normally, before the days of Artemis, he would leap onto the couch cushions from behind and spring into a forwards flip from his hands and land on his feet in front of Wally with a smile but the last time he did that the blonde archer got annoyed so he stopped.
“Oh, Robin. Hey there, what’s up?” Wally asked as Artemis shifted her position so that she could place an arm around his torso, pressing herself against him more firmly.
“Well, I was wondering if you were ready for our hangout.” Dick replied casually, pulling out his cool cocky Boy Wonder persona when in reality he knew he was going to be blown off again (You never used to pretend in front of him before), “I’ve got ten different Barbie movies lined up and two boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts with your name on them.”
“Uh, actually, man, I can’t make it today,” Wally said, his tone apologetic, “I already promised Arty that I’d take her to the Weapons Museum today. I was going to tell you after I bought the tickets but I guess it just slipped my mind.”
“Wait, you guys watch Barbie movies,” Artemis piped in amusement, her nose scrunched as she gave a huff of laughter, “aren’t those for like little six year old girls that wear tutus and ribbons around their pigtails and dream of being fairy princesses when they grow up.”
“Yeah, we do,” Dick didn’t mean to sound defensive but he didn’t appreciate her tone. His masculinity wasn’t so toxic and fragile that he’d deny liking something that was classed as feminine - he grew up in a travelling circus, where gender roles didn’t matter (the bearded lady back at Haly’s was one of the most awesome people eight year old Dick knew). He loved watching The Island Princess with Wally - he totally related to Rosa trying so hard to please the upper class royal families despite not fitting in and being called ‘uncivilised’. Plus it had a talking elephant, which was awesome.
Wally cocked his head and made a noise at the back of his throat, “It’s less of us watching them and more of us laughing at how cliche the plots are.”
Dick looked at him. Is that what he really thought? He remembered belting out ‘I’m just a girl like you’ with Wally as Princess and the Pauper playing on the giant IMAX screen in the Wayne Manor theatre room. Did he secretly hate it? Just pretended to have fun to spare Dick’s feelings?
“I’m really sorry, dude,” Wally said, looking uncomfortable as he rubbed the back of his neck, “We can hang out tomorrow or something, right?” Poor Wally, he sounded so genuinely sorry. Dick didn’t want to be a burden, didn’t want their hangouts to be a chore Wally must fulfil. So he just smirked.
“Seriously, bro, I get it. I’ve got some stuff to do at home as well anyways. Been meaning to touch up on my aerial skills for some time actually. Now you guys have a fun time. I’m gonna be bob bob bobbin’ along.”
He’s happy for Wally, he really is. What sort of best friend would he be if he wasn’t? When Wally is with Artemis, he seems joyful, light, giving her smiles that he only used to give him. Wally deserved to be happy and if he was happier with Artemis, even by an atom’s amount, then who was he to deny him that?
——
One of the reasons Dick was at the top of his Advanced Mathematics class and award-winning Mathlete was because he genuinely loved Maths (and being at the top of everything was one of Bruce’s expectations). Back home, at the circus, he remembered having math teachers from around the world - he was the youngest there and everyone made sure to give him an education that he found was much better than the American school system. The acrobats, tightrope walkers and unicyclists taught him about physics and forces required for balance, the plate spinners, knife throwers and cannon-blasters taught him how math was an integral part of performance. Even the musicians and dancers would explain how numbers were important in their acts. He remembered how his six year old self was sat down in front of a group of daredevils (he always loved watching them zip around in their Globe of Death) and was taught everything he needed to know about a motorcycle: how it ran, how it was assembled, all the physics and mechanics behind it. He knew from then on that he definitely liked maths. Well, he’s got to anyway - being an aerialist means that you’ve got to know all this stuff about trajectories and aerodynamics and forces and motion and stuff.
But the best thing about Maths was that it was constant, never changes. Two plus two equals four, it has always equalled four and always will equal four. Dick is certain that if he were to build a time machine and go a thousand years into the future, two plus two would still make four. That's why he loves numbers so much: they don’t lie or change or forget you. You can rely on them. With numbers and equations, you’ll always get a right answer - with people you only get a not wrong answer. He may be a dynamic performer, a world-class actor that can never sit still - always willing to contort and change for the sake of his audience - but for once he wants the comfort of permanence.

“Dick,” Wally said solemnly one day. The two of them were sitting on the edge of the top of Dick’s apartment building, dressed in civvies, watching the sky and the hustle and bustle of the city. It was one of the rare days Dick and Wally could hang out - what with Wally at college and Dick patrolling Bludhaven both as Nightwing and Officer Grayson - and Dick wanted to make the most of it: the two of them went to Happy Harbour and spent the two hours they had playing at the Arcade and stuffing their mouths with whatever they could get their hands on. If Dick tried really hard, he could pretend that they were 14 and 16 again and Wally was his and only his. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it,” Dick asked cautiously. Wally’s expression was too serious, it looked wrong and out of place - nothing at all like the goofy kid who stuck science themed stickers on every surface he owned and covered his room in glow in the dark stars so that the two of them could pretend to be intrepid voyagers snuggled up inside their tent - a hastily made blanket fort - with a flashlight that bore the Flash symbol.
“We - well, Artemis and I - we’ve been thinking. And trust me it’s got nothing to do with you, okay, absolutely nothing. But, well, it took me a long time to get to this decision and I think that it’s the right thing to do. So, well, what I guess what I’m trying to say is I’mquittingtheteam.”
“What did you say,” Dick whispered in shock. He knew exactly what his best friend said - after knowing him since he was ten he’s become fluent in Wally-speak - but he had to make sure-
“Artemis and I,” Wally breathed out, “We’re … leaving the team.”
“What? Why?” Dick tried to mask his panic but all he could hear was ‘leavingleavingI’mleavingtheteamI’mleavingyou’ over and over again in his head.
“It’s just that, well, it’s just that I’m moving to Palo Alto so that I can go to Stanford Uni and it’s gonna be a bit of a hassle living a double life.”
“It’s alright,” Dick said quickly, feeling his eyes start to brim with water, “I’m - I’m sure that The League would understand if you wanna take a few off days. Not everyone there’s like Bruce.”
“The thing is I don’t want to be Kid Flash anymore, you know. I don’t want to live a life where I could die any time I go out on the field. I just want to be Wally West: a college student trying to get into the CSI and lead a normal life. Sure I wanted to save the world back when I was a kid, but that was just a childish dream - I, I want to just be normal. (yeah, all the way in California. Away from me). I’m not going to be going away or anything (are you sure?). You know that right (do I?). I’ll still be there for you (LIES).”
Dick smiled and lied through his teeth, ignoring the feeling of hot tears streaming down his cheeks, “Hey, I’m good (you were never there for me anyway, were you just practicing for this moment?). I get it, the superhero life isn’t for everyone. You should do what you want. If you need any help I’ll be right here in ‘Haven.”
“Thanks man, you’re the best (“Thanks, Rob. You’re the best!” a teenaged Wally West said before he ran off to ask Artemis out). You supporting me really means a lot.” Just then a ‘ding’ cut into the silence and Wally fished his phone out of his pocket, “Aww man, it’s Arty. I best get going.” and with that he was gone, leaving a whoosh of breeze in his place.
The last time he felt this abandoned was when he watched a man and woman fall to their deaths. He supposes that Wally and his parents are similar like that. They both are going to be in a better place. It just so happens that the better place in question doesn’t include him.
He’s been tortured by the Joker, beaten to near death by Two Face, and was left in a pool of his own blood by the Penguin but none of that physical pain could ever come close to the anguish he feels when he watches Wally leave. The agony fills him up to the brim and he can’t - he can’t breathe. He races down the stairwell of the roof and slams the door of his apartment open. The sound of the handle banging against the wall is lost on him as he heaves over his bathroom sink. He looks at his red-eyed, tear-stained reflection in the mirror. In the sink, lilac petals clung onto sticky red blood.

“Hanahaki Disease:” Dick’s computer screen read, “The term hanahaki comes from the Japanese words hana (花), which means "flower", and hakimasu (吐きます), which means "to throw up”. Hanahaki Disease is a disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but once surgery is undergone, the victim loses all feelings of affection (both romantic and platonic) as well as the ability to ever love again.
The victim's lungs get filled with the flowers and roots grow in their respiratory system. It often develops over months or even years, beginning with coughing up a few petals and growing in intensity (and pain) until the victim is vomiting entire flowers, by which point the disease has entered its final stages. The rate at which the disease worsens and spreads throughout the body is specific to the individual. The longest case was Danielle Chamberlain (1801 - 1834) who had it for 10 years and the shortest case was Akai Shimizu (1914 - 1931) who died after two weeks.” *
Well.
He’s screwed.
______
When he was about to go to bed after a night of patrol, he lay in bed in the darkness, staring at the ceiling. He turned on his phone and pressed the playlist he and Wally made when they were kids. ABBA came out of the speaker:
Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find
I tried to reach for you, but you have closed your mind…
____
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me
S. O. S.
When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?
___
It was Wally’s birthday party and Dick stood in the corner of the restaurant Barry had reserved for the occasion. The only people in the building were the old team, Barry, Iris, Clark and Bruce. And Roy was there too, which was nice. When Wally was egged on to do a birthday speech before he cut the cake, he spoke about how lucky he is to have so many amazing friends and such an awesome girlfriend. When the redhead gave her a peck on the cheek, Dick’s stomach gave a lurch as he could feel the inevitable cough building up his throat. He tried to excuse himself as he made way into a disabled bathroom and locked himself in there. After coughing out a cluster of chrysanthemum petals - and holy cow, that’s a lot of blood - he carefully opened the door to find himself face to face with a concerned Roy Harper.
“Everything good there, Dickie?”
“Wha- oh, yeah. I’m fine.”
Roy raised an eyebrow, “You sure? ‘Cause I heard retching and you don’t look too hot.”
“I guess I might have food poisoning. I did eat some old Ramen for lunch yesterday.”
Roy did not look convinced. He never really stopped being Dick’s older brother, even after he left the team. Sometimes the two of them would trade text messages when they’re not too busy. He loved Roy so much (not as much as Wally) and he was sure that Roy loved him. The red haired archer would always make sure to check up on him when the date of his parents death anniversary would arrive. He wondered how long it would take for Roy to get fed up with him.
“I think that you should go home and get some rest.”
“What, Roy? No, I can’t. This is Wally’s birthday and he’ll be crushed if I go (as if). What sort of friend would I be if I leave? Plus, I hardly get to see him otherwise,” noticing how high and desperate his voice sounded, he quickly added, “you know, what with him in college and me working as a police officer and everything.”
…
“Sure... Look, Dick, I’m sure Wally would understand if you go. Your health is more important than a party (no it’s not. Why would I matter to anyone?). Just go home, alright. I’ll save you a slice of cake.”
Contrary to popular belief, Dick knew a losing battle when he saw one, “Alright, Roy, I’ll head off. Just do me a favour, okay. Don’t mention me being too unwell to B. You know how he gets. I don’t want him or Alfred getting too worried.”
“Sure thing, bird brain,” Roy smirked but his eyes still had that concerned, protective look in them. He clamped his hand onto Dick’s shoulder, “just remember, though, that it’s okay to have people worrying about you.”
Dick gave a toothy smile he didn’t feel at all, “‘Course I will.”
_
“Yo, Goldie. Open up.” Jason yelled as he pounded on the apartment door, “C’mon Dickolas, I’m freezing out here.”
“Jason, quit yelling,” Tim whispered sharply to the older vigilante, aware of how loud his knocking is.
“Tt, I don’t see why we can’t just enter the apartment. It’s not like Grayson would be angry, he’s forever asking us to visit.”
“Yeah but the fact that he isn’t answering the door is really concerning,” Tim said, mostly to himself, “Jason - quit banging, you’re going to wake all of his neighbours - just use the spare key he gave you.”
“Alright, alright. Keep your hair on.”
And with that Jason opened the door and the boys entered the apartment.
“Big Bird?”
“Dick, are you alright. Roy called us. He said you weren’t feeling well. He sounded really worri-”
“GRAYSON!”
Jason and Tim immediately looked at each other when they heard Damian’s shout from his position outside of Dick’s bathroom before rushing to meet him. The youngest’s horrified face was pale and his terrified eyes were staring straight at something that when they followed the line of sight made them freeze.
Dick was collapsed over his commode, breathing heavily as if every breath he took caused him immense pain. Splashes of blood and petals were leading up to him like a horrific trail and his dark hair was matted against his pallid face.
“Dick!” Tim cried as he ran towards Dick and crouched beside him.
“Ti’m?”
“Yeah, yeah, it’s Tim.”
“Wha’ - wh’ryu-?”
“Roy,” Jason answered, looking uncharacteristically scared himself as he sat himself down on the other side of his brother, “he called us and said that you weren’t well. We tried to call you but you weren’t answering so we came to check up on you. Why didn’t you tell us you had Hanahaki?”
“I didn’t want you guys to worry. I didn’t realise how bad it was-” he was then cut off as he retched more blood and petals into the toilet bowl as Tim rubbed circles into his back.
“Who is it?” Tim asked.
“It’s Wally, isn’t it.” Jason said. It was a statement, not a question.
“How - how did you?”
“It’s kind of obvious,” Jason shrugged, acting nonchalant but failing to get rid of that fearful look in his eye, “Even when I was Robin, I could tell you had the hots for him.”
Dick wiped away the blood dripping down his chin,“You guys can’t tell Bruce.”
“What do you mean we cannot tell Father?!” Damian cried, “We can get you cured.”
“Damian,” Dick looked at his positively shaken brother, “do you know what Hanahaki is?”
“Yes, of course -“
“Then you know why I can’t tell Bruce. If I tell him, he’ll force me to get the surgery.”
“But, Dick, you don’t need to. You could just con-”
The eldest cut Tim off, “I can’t confess Tim. He doesn’t want me. I can’t just force him to be with me.”
“Then you just need to-”
“I’m not getting the surgery either. I just can’t”
“I don’t want you to die Dick,” Tim immediately burst into tears as he roughly embraced the man. Dick held him close, whispering comforts into his little brother’s hair, when he saw that Damian had tears running down his own cheeks. He held open an arm and he youngest dived into Dick’s side and hugged him as well.
Dick looked at Jason imploringly, “You can’t tell Bruce. Please.”
Jason’s jaw was set, his eyes firm but he relented at the sight of his brother’s bloodstained face.
“Okay.”
__
Dick sat cross-legged in front of two identical graves, the rain pouring down heavily onto his body. He felt someone stand behind him.
“Dick?” Wally asked, “Is everything alright? Is there anything you need?”
“Could you stay here? For a bit?”
“Of course I will,” Wally sat down beside him and held him close, “I’ll always be there when you need me.”
__
One night, Jason decided to go visit Dick after spending his patrol taking down a drug cartel. He had called the first Robin previously but the man didn’t answer his calls. All 20 of them. After a conversation with Tim, he found that he wasn’t responding to any attempts made to contact him and that his tracker showed that he was still in his apartment. Entering Dick’s apartment through the window, he cautiously stepped into his brother’s living room and his heart dropped to his stomach.
Dick was slumped against a wall with his eyes closed. Trails of scarlet liquid dripping down his mouth and chin dropping onto the pool of blood, chrysanthemums that surrounded him. Bottles of gin were littered across the floor around him, which was what shocked him the most - Dick was not a heavy drinker. He called alcohol a trapeze artist’s worst nightmare.
(“Alcohol makes you lose focus,” Dick said, “losing focus means losing balance and grip. The moment you lose focus, you lose your life.”)
“What the hell happened here, Big Bird?” Jason asked in worry. He crouched in front of one of the strongest people he ever knew and gently shook him. Dick’s eyes were flickering open. Their baby blues were dim, misty, lacking their usual brightness and warmth - everything about them that made them Dick’s.
“Wha - Jay! What areya do-doin’ here?” Dick’s voice was garbled, confused and Jason felt a surge of protectiveness rush inside his veins. “You don’t - don’t gotta be here. I’m - I’m fi-ine.”
Jason took in his infallible older brother’s haggard form - his unusually pale face and the dark rings around his eyes) and sighed, “I need alcohol.”
______
“I just - I thought he might have cared about - about me.” Dick sniffed tearfully, words still slurring even a half hour later, “But no he only cared about her. “I’m worried about Artemis” what about me?! I - I was so sc-scared, Jason. My - my team was in danger, an-and I already lost you, I - I couldn’t - couldn’t lose anyone else. And - and I was all by myself and I - I - I just couldn’t-” he broke down crying, clutching Jason’s shirt like a lifeline. Jason’s arm immediately stroked Dick’s shaking back, making sure to pat his hair as well.
“Shh, shh. It’s okay Dickie. I’m here, just let it out,” Jason murmured soothingly.
“All I ever wanted was to be- be friends again. But no matter how hard I tried, he-he just - he just kept pushing me away. I know that I’m not good enough for- for Bruce, but I thought that - that maybe, I was enough for him.” He then started crying again, his words slipping from English into a mix of Romani, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, German and every other language he learned at Haly’s. Jason was still swiping his hand down the curve of his spine. After he composed himself somewhat, “He was my first - my first friend after my - my parents. He- he said he’d - he’d be there for me. We p-promised to be b-bros. We pink-pinkie promised an’ ev’rythin. I told him ev-evrythin: ‘bout my p-parents, my night-nightmares. I even told him ab-about that time I killed the Joker.”
Wait, hold up.
“You killed the Joker?”
“Ye-yeah,” Dick wiped his nose with his sleeve as his voice became a whisper, “I thought he killed Tim and started - started taunting me about your death and I couldn’t just stand back so I saw red. Next thing I know, I beat him to death. Batman revived him when he arrived”
“Dick..”
“When I saw him I I ju- just couldn’t help myself. You know what he said when I hit him? “I hit Jason a lot harder”.”
“God, Dick.” Jason was quiet for a second before saying, “Did you use a crowbar? Because if you did, I really would’ve appreciated the poetic justice.”
“Jay-”
“Yeah. Bad timing. I just can’t believe you killed the Joker”
“I couldn’t let him get away with what he did. No one’s allowed to hurt my little brother and gets away with it.”
Dick then coughed up more blood and petals. Jason held him close as he apologised between sobs.
————
John Grayson hissed in pain as his wife dabbed the blood stained wet cloth on the cut on his face. A few minutes ago, his cheek was sliced by a drunkard with a broken bottle that was harassing a few of the circus folk after a show. Dick sat on his father’s lap, hugging him tearfully.
“Why - why did that man do that?” He asked his parents.
“Because he didn’t like us,” Mary replied. She placed a bandage on her husband’s wounded cheek and kissed it.
“But why, Mami?”
“Because he was scared of us.”
“Why would he be scared of us?”
“Because we’re different, păsărică (little bird), and that makes him scared. People don’t like difference because it’s new, they can’t understand it and when people can’t understand anything they get scared.”
“So that’s why he hurt Tati? Because he was scared?”
“Yes, draga mea (my darling). Fear makes people do terrible things, Dick. It makes people lie, cheat and kill. Many people consider it to be the strongest force on Earth.”
“Do you think it is?”
“No. Because I know the one thing that’s stronger than fear.”
“And what’s that Mami?”
“Love. Love is the most powerful thing a person can have. It’s what stops fear from consuming you. When your heart is full of love then your life is full of light and happiness. When you feel love, you can do anything. So remember, my little Robin, to always keep love in your heart because when someone loses their ability to love, they lose their ability to be a human and their life is plunged in darkness.”
“Don’t worry Mami. I’ll never forget.”
———-
His siblings decided that enough was enough. They came clean to Bruce and forced Dick to come to the Manor. Well it was less of a force and more of tranquilising him and carrying his body to Gotham, but semantics. He awoke later in his bedroom at the Manor, hooked onto some sort of monitor. Bruce, of course, was furious.
“How could you have kept this from me?”
“Because I know how you would react. You’d make me get the surgery.”
“Of course I would. You’re my son. You are not going to die.” Bruce said the last part with such conviction.
“No, Bruce.”
“Dick, if you don’t get the surgery, you’ll die!” Tim yelled, every world laced in pain.
“Don’t you see, Tim,” Dick argued back, “if I get the surgery, I’ll die anyway. I’ll never feel love ever again. I’ll never be able to feel that comfort when I remember my parents, that pride when I find out that Dami’s won another award, that warmth in my chest every time I’m with my friends, my family. I’ll be looking straight at my family’s faces every single day but I’d never be able to tell them I love them ever again. That’s not the person my parents raised. I’ll be alive, but I won’t be living. I won’t be Dick Grayson, I’ll just be a man that looks like your brother.”
“That’s alright,” Tim replied back, his voice hysterical with desperation. If it weren’t for the fact that Dick was hooked onto the machine, he would’ve thrown his arms around his little bird, “You’ll still be our brother even if you don’t love us. We’ll still love you.”
“No, Tim.”
“So that’s it then,” Jason said bitterly, “you’re going to give up your life just because one idiot speedster doesn’t love you.”
“Listen to yourself Grayson,” Damian yelled, tears streaming down his face and oh did Dick want to get up and hug him as well, “you speak as if your love for West is worth dying for but isn’t your love for us worth living for?”
“I do love you guys, Dami. I love you all so much. That’s why I can’t get the surgery. Because you all deserve a brother that can tell you that every single day of your life. You all speak like me not loving you won’t hurt you and maybe it won’t. Maybe for the first few months it won’t. But what about in two years, three years, he’ll even ten years in the future, you mean to tell me that you won’t be able to handle it. That you won’t resent me for never being able to give you a hug, never ruffling your hair comforting you when you're sad, you’ll be able to live with me acting as if you’re nothing to me. You wouldn’t love me, you’ll tolerate me like I’m some sort of burden and I refuse to be a burden on anyone
“You won’t be a burden,” Tim whispered, as his own tears stained his shirt, “you’ll be our brother.”
That night, both Tim and Damian slept on either side of their older brother with Jason lying on a mattress beside them.
——-
“YOU CHEATED!”
“Jay-bird, how can I cheat? It’s snakes and ladders.”
“I don’t care. I still say that you cheated.”
“Oh come on-”
“Dick!”
Jason and Dick were interrupted from their good-natured bickering by the sound of a very familiar voice. They both swivelled their heads to the source of it to see a very bedraggled Wally West standing at the doorway of Dick’s room.
“Dick. I-I heard the news. I came to see- are- are you alright?”
“Wally West,” Jason stated darkly, “you’re the person that’s supposed to be his best friend.”
“What?” Wally looked confused as Dick gave him a sharp look as if to say ‘Don’t’.
Jason ignored him as he stared straight at the older man, “You heard me. I thought friends were supposed to watch out for each other. I guess the definition changed after I got put into the ground.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Jason, enough,” Dick hissed.
“What I’m talking about, Wallace, is your complete inability to be a decent human being. What I’m talking about is how you think that you can waltz in here all willy-nilly and act like you haven’t spent years pushing Dick away.”
“What? I haven’t been-”
“Oh, you haven’t. Well, silly me. It’s just that I thought ignoring someone for months on end constitutes on pushing away. Like seriously, with friends like you, who needs enemies?”
“What’s your problem?”
“I don’t like watching Dick get hurt.”
“Yet, when you guys met again the first thing you did was try to shoot him.”
“Enough!” Dick yelled, “Please. I’m going through a lot right now and the last thing I want to hear is my brother arguing with my best friend. If you’re going to argue can you please do it outside.”
“Alright then,” Jason says as he grabs Wally’s hand and drags him to his own room, “C’mon West, there’s a lot I want to say to you.”
After Jason closed the door, Wally started, “What’s your deal?”
“My deal?” Jason laughs with no humour, “My deal is that you’ve been a s***ty friend to my big brother and I don’t stand for it. He needed you and you abandoned him when he needed you the most. He loves you more than everything and you can’t spare him the time of day. You were his best friend and the first person he ever trusted after the League and Alfred and you go around for years acting like he doesn’t exist! He drops everything for you! No matter where he is or what he’s doing, he’s always been there for you. The Pit may have messed up my head but I still remember this one time back when I was Robin. We had been in a burning building and he sacrificed himself for me. The idiot pushed me away when a wall was gonna collapse on me and trapped himself under it whilst yelling at me to escape. By the time Bruce got to him he was out. Was hooked on the breathing equipment for two days. The moment he got his phone back was when you called about something to do with Artemis and he stayed on the line for two whole hours listening to you and never once mentioned about how he almost died. Well now he’s dying! My brother’s been dying for a while now but you were too busy playing happy families with your girlfriend to even notice!”
Wally just looked horrified as he whispered, “I - I didn’t mean to push him away. I’ve been so busy and-”
“Really,” Jason raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed, “you know, I always thought you never deserved him. To be honest I don’t think anyone deserves to have Dick in their life. To this day I still ask myself what good did Bruce ever do to have someone like him. He takes so much s*** from everyone and refuses to do anything about it. No matter how hurt he gets, he’ll always forgive you. He is just too good for us. Maybe that’s what this is. Maybe it’s the universe’s way of taking him back, of saving him from getting hurt again. Like it’s saying “I gave you a gift and you didn’t treat it right so now I’m taking it back. You had your chance and now it’s too late”. Tell me West, if he wasn’t lying on his deathbed, would you even be here. Or would you still be living in your happy little bubble without giving a s*** about the person that has always stood by you.”
His voice went low and quiet as he stood directly in front of the red head, using the few inches he had over him to loom over him as he clutched the front of Wally’s shirt, “The only reason that I’m not throwing you out of here is because Dick cares about you and I prioritise my brother over revenge. But listen here, if you say or do anything from this moment forth that upsets him in any way, I’ll make sure that you can’t take a step in Gotham without one of the bats going after you.”
“Understood,” Wally nodded, tears in his eyes, looking angry, aghast and ashamed at his behaviour.
____
“Dick, I’m sorry. God, I’m so so sorry.”
“Wally, it’s okay. Really.”
“No. No, it’s not okay. You’ve got to stop making excuses for everyone.”
“Wally-”
“No, Dick, please. I’ve got to say this. Ever since I started dating Artemis I’ve been a terrible friend. Don’t try to deny it, it’s the truth. I kept blowing you off and pushing you away and you just wanted to spend time with me. I was so happy to have started dating, I didn’t realise that I was hurting my best friend. And I’m so sor-”
“Wally,” Dick cut in, “it’s okay. Really. You have your own life. I couldn’t expect you to drop everything for me.”
“You drop everything for everyone.”
“Yeah, and I’m cool with that. Listen, I forgive you, alright. I got to terms with it ages ago,” Dick was smiling at him, his tone bearing no resentment and his eyes filled with warmth, “so can you please stop apologising and tell me about your life.”
______
That night, after Wally had left with promises of returning soon (“Why should you believe him?” a voice asked cynically, “he’s made promises before. He promised that he’ll always be there for you, that he’ll always have your back. Fat lot of good those promises were.”) Jason had sat beside him. Both of them were reading quietly, finding comfort in the silence and the constant beeps of the heart monitor.
“Jason?” Dick inquired after a while, not looking up from his well-worn copy of the Robin Hood novel his mother and father gifted to him on his seventh birthday.
Jason grunted in response, eyes still trained on his own book.
Dick took that as a reason to continue, “Why did you say those things to Wally?”
Jason looked him straight in the eye and replied, “Because no one hurts my big brother and gets away with it.”
The silence continued for a second before Dick spoke up, “Do you think you could read your book to me?”
The other vigilante raised an eyebrow, “You want to hear about The Reign of Terror.”
“Jay-bird, I’m an uncultured gypsy circus freak that Bruce Wayne took in as a charity case and you’re a street rat from Crime Alley that was yet another charity case. Nothing would be a better way for us to bond than to hear about anarchy and revolution against the bourgeoisie. Nothing brings together two people better than discussions of Class Warfare. Besides, it might give us ideas for Bruce’s next stupid gala.”
“True that,” Jason flipped to the front page and began, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness..”
_____
Later on, after a night of patrol, when Tim and Damian came to Dick’s room, they found him asleep with a softly snoozing Jason holding him protectively.
_____
“I love you, Dick,” Bruce whispered as he traced the back of Dick’s hand with his thumb, eyes boring into his sons, “I know that I don’t say it enough. You don’t hear it any where close to as much ass you deserve to. But I love you so much. You’re my son, my light. You were the one who pulled me out of the darkness. I can’t lose you, Robin.”
Dick’s eyes were watering and lips, trembling, “I’m not getting it, B.”
“Please. Please for me. I know I’ve already asked you for a lot, more than I should. But please consider it. For me, for your brothers, for your family. Just - please just consider it.”
Dick took a breath, “Sure, I’ll think about it.”
Bruce smiled tearfully, “Thank you, chum.”
He leaned down, cupped his son’s cheek and kissed his forehead.
____
“I have an idea,” Damian declared after removing another block from their Jenga tower. He, Jason and Tim were huddled around him on the bed. They spent the entire day playing every game they could think of - Bluff (“To enhance our body reading skills of course”), Taboo (“Jason, quit squeezing that thing before I throw my mug at you”), Uno (yeah, they had to stop three minutes in to prevent Damian from attacking Tim because of another plus four) before deciding on Jenga. When Tim got the box out, Dick proclaimed that he thought that the plain brown pieces of wood were ‘too boring’ and ‘lacked personality’ so the four of them used Damian’s art set as well as Dick’s old paints to decorate them. The end result was like something out of a Picasso painting, all conflicting colours that stuck out everywhere, but Dick thought it was the most beautiful creation on Earth.
“What is it?” Tim inquired as he removed a yellow brick that was covered with small smiley faces. He released the breath he was holding as the tower wobbled but stayed standing.
“We kill West.”
“What, Damian?” Dick exclaims, startled by Damian’s blunt reply. Whilst his youngest brother hasn’t made his negative feelings for the speedster unknown, it was unlike him to so casually speak of his murder - at least around him. “How could you say that.”
“The reason you are … in this condition” - they all flinched at the unheard ‘dying’ - “is due to West not reciprocating your feelings towards him. If he were no longer in the picture, there would be no reason for there to be unreciprocated feelings and you shall be cured.”
Dick’s eyes softened, “Damian, it doesn’t work like that. I won’t stop loving him even if he’s dead. And even if it did work, you can’t just kill him because it’ll save me. The reason I’m lying on this bed is because of me and me alone. None of it is his fault.”
“Why do you even love him?” Jason asked, “After all he’s done?”
“I don’t know,” Dick mused, he took out a brick near the foundation of the structure (a bright red one that had the words ‘BATMAN SUCKS’ scribbled on in black marker) - making it unstable and unable to hold up - and watched their carefully crafted tower crumble, “I guess the one thing I’m good at is getting hurt.”
——-
That night Dick was tossing and turning, unable to sleep. He couldn’t get much rest anyway, he’d be abruptly woken up by the bloodied petals that would burst out of his mouth like a geyser. Lo and behold, his body shook as he coughed, blood splattering onto his fingertips. He stared at the red that trickled down onto his palm. He remembered reading Macbeth back in Middle School and always wondered about Lady Macbeth - how she spent night after night plagued by her own guilt, perpetually washing her hands to get rid of the imagined bloodstains. He wondered how she felt to be trapped in her own nightmare, to lose control of her own mind. How much sleep she sacrificed. What she must have thought as she climbed the steps of the tower. How she must have felt when she jumped off, knowing that her suffering would be over. Unfortunately, Shakespeare died so he won’t be getting any answers soon. His mind flashed back to two other broken, fallen bodies and his hands covered in blood that wasn’t his own, as he just lay in bed and wondered.
_
“Food poisoning, really,” Roy Harper said, unamused. Dick smiled weakly in response, “God, look at you. What would’ve happened if I didn’t give the Manor a call when I did. Would you have, what, just died in your apartment, waiting for someone to stumble upon your corpse?”
“I didn’t want anyone to find out this way. Or at all to be honest.”
“Dick, seriously man. I’m supposed to be your big brother. How could you hide this from me. I thought you could tell me everything.”
“Roy, Hanahaki is a disease that can only be cured in two ways. Both of them are things I’d never do.”
“Richard John Grayson, I swear-”
“The only way for the surgery to work is if I consent, right. Well, I would never consent to losing the most important part of me.”
“And you won’t confess because-?”
“I can’t force someone to be with me out of pity. Especially not when they’re with someone else already. When they’ve already pushed me out of their life.”
“You really are a piece of work Grayson, you and your stupid hero-complex. You know what happens if this continues, right? You die! You die and there’s nothing any of us can do.”
“I kind of get that, Roy,” Dick deadpanned, “seeing as I’m the one that’s dying.”
“You seriously believe that I, the League, your friends, your family would be able to live without you?”
(Wally could)
“It would hurt or be hard but I’m sure that they could. My presence is not essential for survival. Besides the League existed before me, it can exist without me.”
__
“Who hurt you, my little kitten,” Selina hummed as she traced the lines of his face.
“No one, Selina,” Dick replied, eyes shut as he melted into the show of affection, “I hurt myself.”
_
The days went by. More and more people were begging and pleading with him to take the surgery. That his life was not worth his feelings for one person. That they would still love him even if he couldn’t love them back. That having him alive and unfeeling would be much better than not having him at all. He had never seen Bruce let out so many tears in his life. The sight of the cold, calculated Batman that would make Gotham’s hardest criminals fall to their knees imploring him with a cracked, choked up voice on the verge of breaking down was something he would never forget - and he caused it.
“You are a fighter,” Diana had said one day as she sat next to him. She had spent her time telling him every story that she could think of. “You always had been. I admit that I was cautious when I heard that Batman had taken in a partner. I didn’t know if having a man like Bruce Wayne in your life would be good for you. But you were definitely good for him. You’ve changed him in ways that I couldn’t even dream of. I understand your decision, and while it’s not the one I would’ve wanted for you to take, it’s the one that suits you. For Dick Grayson without love is like the Solar System without the Sun.
Dick took her battle-hardened hand with his own week one and held it, rubbing it with his thumb.
“You are a fighter,” the warrior repeated, fire in her eyes, “so when you go down, go down with a fight.”
___
“When I die,” Dick said one day, high off of pain meds, “I don’t want anyone wearing black to my funeral okay. I see enough darkness already in my life, there shouldn’t be sadness during my death. Everyone should be wearing the brightest colours imaginable. At least have a yellow sock or something. I want music and laughter and embarrassing stories. Play Rick Astley instead of that terrible organ march. Hire a bubble machine instead of a Priest. And I don’t want any stupid roses either. It’s either sunflowers or nothing.”
___
“Why are you doing this Dick?” Wally asked tearfully. Dick was so weak now. His veins darkened as flowery vines curled around his chest and arms. He looked like a masterpiece, an untouchable work of art, “Why are you just letting yourself die.”
“Don’t start, Wally. Please.”
“Dick…”
“I’m not getting the surgery, Wally. So you should just drop it. You should know how stubborn I can be. So how’s things with you?”
“Dick...”
“Seriously, you’re my best friend. I want to know that at least your life doesn’t suck.”
“Well, Artemis and I broke up so ...”
“What?” Dick exclaimed in shock, “you guys broke up? But you were so happy together (happy enough to forget me). You loved her so much.”
“Yeah, that’s the thing. I don’t really know if I loved her or just really liked her. We just realised that we weren’t compatible, you know. She wanted more than I can give her.”
“Bro,” Dick looked at him with concern, “I’m so sorry. Are you okay.”
Wally gave him an incredulous look, “Dude, you’re literally dying but you’re asking me if I’m okay?”
“Again, you’re my best friend, it's my job to worry.”
“God, I don’t deserve you.”
“Hey,” Dick chastised, “I’m the judge of whether you deserve me or not, okay. And I say that anyone who has a breakup is entitled to at least two movies and three hours of video games.
“Is that so?” Wally raised his eyebrows.
Dick gave the gravest nod he can muster, “Of course it’s true. I got a doctorate in Best Friendology, you know. So I know what I’m talking about.”
“Well, if the doctor orders.”
——
“The spark just died out, I guess. We started to realise that we were acting less like a couple and more like roommates that occasionally made out,” Wally exclaimed as he shovelled another mouth of caramel chocolate crunch ice cream into his mouth, “It was like we were just trying to make it work but it just wasn’t catching on. It’s okay though, we’re still friends so I’m cool with living the single life.”
“Not for long though,” Dick said, smiling at him with a look of pure fondness that Wally couldn’t help but blush, “you are an amazing person Wally. I’m sure you’ll find someone.”
“Yeah, right.”
“No, really. You probably don’t think it but you’re still my best friend. No one can take that away. Having you in their life would be the greatest honour a person can receive.”
“Psssh, whatever. Let’s see if you’ll still say that once I kick your butt at Call of Duty.”
__
“Dick, you can’t be serious.”
“I’m really sorry, Uncle Clark,” Dick looked down, refusing to meet his idol’s disheartened gaze.
“Dick, look at you,” Dick was sure that Clark gave him a once over with his x-ray vision when he entered, if that slight wince was anything to go by, “you’re wasting away. This isn’t you.”
“If I take the surgery, I wouldn’t be me either.”
“Of course you will. I know you think that we won’t love you if you do but we will. You will always be my nephew. I’d rather have you alive and not love me than never seeing you again.”
“Uncle Clark, I understand what you’re saying and if it was anyone else but me I would be agreeing with you. Yes, I know it’s selfish to do this but it’s the only choice I have. I don’t want people to look back at me and remember me as the person who forgot how to love. For me to be the cautionary tale for what happens if you let your emotions get the best of you. All my life I wanted to catch people, to be the safety net my parents didn’t have. If I lose my love, my passion to keep the people I love safe, then I’ll lose the very reason why I exist. You may be able to live with me but I won’t.”
“I love you Dick. So so much. Ever since the day I met you, when you threw yourself into my arms and asked if I could take you flying, I knew that you would be special, that you would change everyone’s lives for the better. And I was right, even if you made it a habit to give me heart attacks ever since you put on that mask. You will always have my respect.”
“I love you too, Uncle Clark. If anyone deserves that ‘World’s Best Uncle’ mug I gave you when I was ten, it’s you. I’d do anything for you. But this is the one thing I won’t. I’m sorry.”
They sat in silence before Dick piped up, asking sheepishly, “Do you- do you suppose you could tell me a Kryptonian legend. I wouldn’t mind hearing that one about Nightwing and Flamebird again.”
Clark smiled sadly, “It would be my pleasure.”
_____
Today’s the day.
Dick knew that he wasn’t going to survive the night. So he did everything he could. When his family came to check on him, he greeted them with a smile. When the clock chimed ten o’clock, he told them to leave.
“Dick, it’s okay. We can skip patrol,” Tim said.
“No, Tim. Batman needs Robin by his side and Robin needs his older brothers to watch his back. You can’t stop protecting Gotham just for me.”
“We’d do anything for you,” Tim’s eyes were sad, it made Dick feel bad for lying to him
“I know. Trust me, I’ll be alright. Now go so when you come back I can hear all the juicy details.” Dick gave him one of his signature Grayson smiles, using his so called puppy dog eyes for extra effect (he is ashamed to say that it’s not the first time he used them on a family member but desperate times..). “I love you guys, okay. Te iubesc, fratii mei mici (I love you, my little brothers).”
“We love you too, you big idiot,” Jason replies and Dick isn’t faking the smile when he hears that.
“Alright, come on guys. Pre-patrol hug, bring it in.”
___
“I’m not going to make it Alfie,” Dick says when Alfred arrives.
“I know, dear boy.”
“You - you know?”
The Englishman raises an eyebrow, “You may be able to deceive your brothers but do not forget that I was in the army, Master Richard. I can tell the look of a man who knows when his time has come.”
“I didn't mean to lie to them,” Dick says softly, “I just- I couldn’t let them see me like that. I didn’t want them to worry. It’s probably not the right decision but…”
“My dear child, I don’t believe that there is a right way to go about these sorts of affairs. Even on your last breath you try to shield them from the horrors of this world. You are a remarkable person, Master Richard, that is for sure.”
“Do you think I’ll meet them when I- when I go?”
“I cannot say for certain. However, I know for a fact that if you do, they would feel nothing but pride for the young man you’ve grown up to be. Just as Master Bruce and I am.”
“I love you, Alfred.” Dick’s weak voice was tearful as he looked at the man that was a grandfather to him growing up.
“And I do you, Master Richard,” Alfred’s words were choked, as if he’s struggling to hold himself together. The butler wiped away a black forelock, “It’s been an honour to serve you.”
____
After the man left on Dick’s command, with tears streaming down his usually held together face, the first Robin laid down on the bed, clutching his old stuffed elephant as he stared at the ceiling with a soft smile.
“Hi Mami, hi Tati. Let me tell you about my day…”
___
When Alfred gave them the news over the comms, the residents of Wayne Manor were stunned into silence. Not one of them moved or uttered a word before they raced back home. They all entered Dick’s room in a frenzy only to pause at the sight before them.
Alfred was sitting at the foot of Dick’s bed which was enwrapped with flowery vines - originating from the former Boy Wonder’s chest - that reached the floor and curled over the soft carpet in the shape of angel wings. Dick’s hands were clasped daintily over the centre of his unmoving chest, his eyes closed like he was asleep, his mouth was slightly parted and chrysanthemums blossomed between his lips. Black hair framed his face like a halo as lilac petals covered his body, softening his edges. The stems embraced his form, like it was protecting it from the rest of the world.
He looked like a masterpiece. A work of art to forever be treasured and to never be touched. It was the picture of haunting beauty, a real-life paradox. How could something so beautiful, so captivating be so horrific. As a painting, the sight was alluring, awe-inspiring but as the harsh truth, the picture of the man’s corpse made everyone want to vomit.
Damian and Tim fell to their knees next to him; crying, screaming, pleading. Pleasewakeuppleasewakeuppleaseplease. Bruce held them close, his own tears staining his batsuit. He wanted to shout, scream, to punch something Goddamnit! This was not supposed to happen. His son, who was so full of life, who somersaulted into his life with bright eyes that would put a nebula to shame and eager-to-please smiles, can’t go. Not like this. Not by himself, in his room (he always hated the size of his room when he first came - hated how it was nothing like the compact trailer he grew up in). He could never sit still, not even during stakeout, not even as an adult. To see him just lying there, face blank, paralysed like he just saw Medusa was unnatural. Not even Scarecrow’s fear toxin could cook up an image so fearful.
And Jason. Jason just stared.
It was too late
_____
Nightwing’s memorial was put up in Mount Justice the next day. Every hero on Earth attended the service. No one said anything. They all just stood there in organised rows, silently looking at the hologram of one of the strongest, most respected heroes to ever walk the planet.
Dick would’ve hated it.
___
“He was supposed to be the best of us,” Clark said later, when everyone had returned home. Crime won’t stop because one hero had died. The world won’t stop spinning because Nightwing was no longer walking on it. No matter how many people wished it would.
______
“Who was it?” Wally asked.
“You,” Jason replied.
___
Richard John Grayson died a week later. The pneumonia he had contracted became fatal. That was the only information Bruce Wayne gave out to the press before shutting himself in his house, refusing to come out for a month.
The funeral was held two days after the announcement but no one except Dick’s closest friends and family were allowed to attend. Every person wore a sunflower on their jacket and a brightly coloured tie.
____
Wally sat cross-legged in front of three identical tombstones.
“I’m so sorry, Dick,” He wept, “I’m so so sorry.”
___
When Dick Grayson left Wally West’s life, there was no fanfare, no blinding lights or blaze of glory. He wasn’t Robin or Nightwing, a hero or civilian, the ward of a billionaire or the child of two acrobats from a circus, the brother of three grieving boys or the nephew of the mourning Justice League. When Dick Grayson left, he died only as a man who loved too much and expected too little.

Kissing Strangers
By: SassyShoulderAngel319
Fandom/Character(s): DC, BatFam - Jason Todd/Red Hood
Rating: PG-13/T (for mentions of drugs and minor violence)
Original Idea: This Prompt List
Notes: (Masterlist)(By Character)(About Me) Shout out to @jason-redhood for encouraging me through this when I was kinda stuck and looking for something new to write! You’re awesome my friend! Enjoy some angst, y’all! @welovegroot @batboys-and-other-messes @haylo4ever
^^^^^
Jason dated around a lot. I didn’t exactly blame him. He was handsome and eye-catching and generally a pretty decent guy. But it was kind of infuriating, trying to keep track of him. One night we’d be scoping out a bar for mob bosses while he made out with a waitress in a corner and the next day he’d be flirting with the girl working at the café where we stopped for lunch.
Being an Outlaw was dangerous work, but that wasn’t why I was always so irritated.
I was basically carrying the weight of the team on my shoulders. Jason was supposed to be the leader but I was the one doing all the work.
Jason couldn’t be bothered because he was too busy finding some lovely lady to kiss in a corner. Ugh.
I’d hoped tonight would be different.
Apparently not.
I rolled my eyes and wove through the club in my evening gown, glittering mask snugly nestled on my face. Jason was, of course, distracted by some socialite he was flirting with. Artemis and Bizarro were sitting out the gala. Bizarro attracted too much attention and Artemis didn’t want to wear an evening gown. So the mission boiled down to just me and just Jason. Hunting for the target.
But now it was just me, prowling through these upper-class richies looking for our target on my own.
“What’s a young lady like you doing alone at an event like this?” a voice asked from behind me. I whirled.
Just. My. Luck. Internally I fist-pumped. The businessman who moonlighted as a drug trafficker. Our target. He was standing right there. He was in his sixties—so a good forty years too old for me—and smiling at me warmly.
“My date disappeared,” I said with a saccharine smile.
“Would you care for a dance?” the target asked, offering me his hand.
I took it. “I’d love to. What a gentleman,” I said.
He led me to the dancefloor. His hand was a little too low on my waist for my comfort, but I would put it aside until I could persuade him out of the hotel ballroom and into a side room to knock him out and take him away to have a… conversation. “I don’t see why your date would leave a lady like you behind.”
I shrugged. “He and I have a complicated relationship,” I said.
“Shame.”
I fell into silence, letting the target talk about business how lucrative his practices were for a few minutes.
I nodded in all the right places, pretending to listen.
“Get your hands off her!”
Wham!
The target dropped. There were gasps from the other attendees as the target let me go. “Keep your hands off my date!” Jason snapped. The target held his jaw where he’d been struck. He looked almost amused.
“So this is the mysterious date,” he said.
Jason narrowed his eyes. “D*&% straight,” he spat.
“Hey. How about we take this outside,” I said, putting one hand on Jason’s chest. This wasn’t part of the plan.
“It’s alright, young lady, we can handle this like grown men,” the target said. Jason pushed me behind him, making me stumble in my heels. I caught myself by grabbing Jason’s shoulder.
“Jay,” I hissed in protest.
“No, I think she’s right, old man, let’s handle this outside,” Jason snarled.
“Red, don’t cause a scene,” I whispered, squeezing his shoulder.
“Alright, son. Let’s talk outside so we don’t disturb these nice people,” the target said. I made a face of abort, abort, ABORT. Whenever someone called Jason “son,” he got testy. He ignored me grabbing his arm and pulling him toward the door. The target followed my pulling Jason out the door to the outside corridor. The three of us got out of the ballroom and went to a nearby conference room. Galas in hotels that held conferences and conventions were great.
“Red, you’re out of control,” I said. “You can’t just punch businesspeople in the face at a gala for dancing with me.”
“Princess, you are my date,” Jason growled.
I sighed and pulled the skirt of my dress to the side to extract the syringe tucked into the garter around my leg. I plunged it into the target’s neck and depressed the plunger. The target cried out and flailed his arms before dropping to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
Once he was unconscious, I whirled on Jason. “What gives, Red?” I snapped. “You punched him in the face! That wasn’t part of the plan! We had one of those—remember?”
“Shut up, Starbeam,” Jason muttered, leaning down and moving to haul our target onto his shoulders. But I grabbed his shoulder and forced him upright.
“No! You’re going to tell me what’s going on in that head of yours,” I ordered. “You can’t spend all these missions ignoring me and then suddenly get protective.”
“I don’t ignore you!”
“Oh yes you do! You find yourself in some corner with whichever girl is the most eager to make out with you on every single mission and leave me to do the bulk of the work! You’re the leader of the Outlaws—so lead. Don’t leave it to me. I'm not a leader.”
“Can we talk about this at the safe house?”
“No because then Little Bro and Big Sis will be listening. We’re talking about this in private, now.”
Jason sighed and propped the target up on a chair so he looked like he was just dozing in a chair while Jason and I… talked.
Yeah.
Talked.
“Stars…”
“Look, Jason, I don’t begrudge you dating around. You’re a handsome guy and we stay places just long enough that romantic flings happen. But when you forsake the mission in favor of a random girl in every town we pass through while I actually get crap done, I start to get irritated. Heck I could even say discouraged because I can’t do all this all on my own and with how much Biz and Artemis don’t want to be seen in public, I'm gettin’ stressed and really tired of doing all the work like we’re doing some high school group project!”
Jason clenched his jaw. “What I do is none of your business,” he ground out.
“It is when we’re on-mission and you’re unfocused. Need I remind you that this is a team. We’re the Outlaws—not some band called Jason and the Thrilling Three. I'm not going to stand by and allow your distractions to put Artemis or Bizarro in danger.”
“Two nearly-invulnerable superhumans,” Jason said.
“There is still plenty enough stuff on this planet that can hurt them and I'm not going to let you macking on some girl be the reason why one of them gets injured.”
“You’re not worried about yourself?”
I scoffed. “I don’t have time right now. I'm too busy doing all the work. And yes, I am a powerful telekinetic, but that does not mean I am capable of all the heavy lifting, ya hear?”
“Alright, fine! I’ll stop!” Jason exclaimed.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah. Really.”
“Somehow I doubt that.”
Jason yanked his beautiful black satin masquerade mask off to stare right into my eyes. His were cold, steel blue and full of some emotion I couldn’t label. “I'm serious about this,” he said.
“And why would you even expect I could believe you?” I retorted, exasperated, as I untied my mask from the back of my head.
“Because I can’t keep kissing strangers pretending that they’re you!”
I dropped my mask to the ground.
“Wh… wha—?”
Before I could even complete my one-word question, Jason’s lips were crashing against mine, his hands cupping my shoulders, bare because of the dress I wore. I could feel his calluses and his body heat escaping into my skin.
Almost immediately my muscles turned to putty, body giving way to whatever whims he could come up with, molding me under his fingers. Our lips fit together perfectly—like puzzle pieces destined for each to find their place with the other.
Then I shoved him off, getting my senses back. “Nuh-uh, Hood! You don’t just get to say something corny like that, kiss me, and expect everything to be smoothed over!”
Both of us were panting and heat was spreading over my neck, ears, and face.
I was blushing.
I got angry at how flushed I was. How flustered. How easily I’d completely given way to him. His words and actions caught me off-guard and I hated myself for the longing in my chest now that I pushed him away. My heart, its beat pounding in my ears, reached for him with the grabbing hands of a small child desperate to snatch a beloved teddy bear.
“I'm not… I'm not going to just be the newest notch on your belt,” I said breathlessly.
I ignored the aching pull yanking me toward him, scooped up my mask, and ran out of the conference room. My high heels weren’t too terribly tall and I’d gotten used to moving fast in them when I needed to.
Once I escaped the hotel, I wrapped myself up in telekinetic power and launched myself directly into the air.
I flew over the city and landed at the safe house. Once I was inside, I ran to the room Artemis and I were sharing. “Hey Biz, hi Artemis. I'm gonna be out in the woods for a while. Jason should be back soon,” I called as I pulled on my normal clothes after abandoning the formal outfit.
“Blue-Her am… sad?” Bizarro asked.
“No, no. Blue-Her is fine,” I replied, tying my hair back and running to the backdoor. “I won’t be gone long. Promise. ‘Kay bye!” I slammed the backdoor shut and launched myself into the woods beyond the safe house.
I landed hard in a clearing and just sat on the ground in my normal clothes, not even caring that it was getting cold out.
Curling my knees to my chest and wrapping my arms around them, I shook my head. “It wasn’t envy. It wasn’t,” I muttered.
Jason’s words echoed in my head. Because I can’t keep kissing strangers pretending that they’re you!
Jason was many things. A liar wasn’t one of them. He only lied to marks and targets and civilians who didn’t need to know about the life we led. He didn’t lie to us—to his team. He wasn’t lying to me when he said that.
I knew he meant it based on his tone and eye contact and the fact that he wouldn’t lie to me.
But knowing he was telling the truth didn’t really help me any. It just gave me one more piece of information. Not a path to take. I didn’t know what to do about him or what just happened in that conference room. I didn’t want to admit to myself that sitting on the cold forest floor I could feel myself pining for that kiss. The sensation was there—the desire and desperate longing—but if I didn’t acknowledge it, it didn’t exist, right?
“This is ridiculous. I'm not in love with you, Jason,” I muttered into the empty night. “I wasn’t angry because I was envious of those women you kissed. I don’t need… I don’t need you or your—” His what? His love? As if. Jason wasn’t really in love with—
I can’t keep kissing strangers pretending they’re you.
Pretending all those women were me…
“Biz said I’d find you out here,” a familiar voice remarked casually.
“Go away, Todd,” I snapped, putting up a telekinetic shield between him and me so he couldn’t come closer. He was never catching me with my guard down ever again.
He sighed and sat cross-legged on the ground at the edge of my shield. “I just came to say I'm sorry and you were right. That wasn’t fair of me. I shouldn’t have done that. Or said what I did. I meant every word but I shouldn’t have told you. I just…” He shook his head. “My explanations sound like excuses so I won’t bother.”
I eyed him carefully and let the telekinetic shield dissipate but didn’t let my guard down. “Thanks,” I said. “But… you should have told me. A lot sooner. It would have saved us both a lot of irritation.”
He sighed. “You… are probably right,” he muttered.
I couldn’t help but snicker to myself and bounce my eyebrows. “Thanks,” I said.
“Starry, I'm not going to ask you to feel obligated to return my feelings. It’s just—”
“Shuuut—uuup,” I complained, reaching for him and setting my hands on his shoulder. “I am pining for what we shared in that conference room and I promised that I wasn’t going to let you catch my with my guard down ever again but d*&% it, Jason, I can’t keep those walls up when all I want is you.”
He gasped quietly, surprised. “R… really?”
“Jason Todd, just kiss me and get it over with. No more pretending with strangers.”
“It would be my pleasure.”
We leaned closer to one another and crashed together with the reckless abandon of youthful eagerness. His lips fit perfectly against mine, just as before, and I could taste him. A tropical lip balm and the metallic aftertaste of blood.
Our trafficker could wait. For now, the whole universe melted away until it was just him and me.
“Jay,” I whispered, not even pulling away from the kiss.
“Mm?”
“Promise me one thing.”
“Anything.”
“No more kissing strangers.”
“As long as I have you—never.”

Since most of y'all Don't seem to Know her.... Let’s DO THIS BRIEF HISTORY OF ROBIN!STEPH BUCKLE TF UP BITCHES
(Note: For the most part, Steph’s time as Robin is included in the War Games TPB, especially because it serves as a catalyst for said event. Highly recommended the read, but mind, like, everything about it) ((also also tumblr only allows 10 pics, so I'm cherry picking my fav panels/most important ones. + offering a bit of meta. take this with a grain of salt and Please read War Games and draw your own conclusions blah blah))
So to start with, a little Context to Steph’s Start as Robin:
Tim’s dad found out about his Robining & made him hang up the cape+mask. As any Concerned and Reasonable parent would. Steph is still operating as Spoiler at the time, despite many attempts by many members of the batfam (but especially Batman) to dissuade her from crime-fighting.
Due to a gross misunderstanding (as these things tend go in comics *sigh*) Steph, who is dating Tim at the time, sees a girl who was interested in him make a move & thinks that Tim is cheating on her. She channels this grief/mourning/anger into making her own homemade Robin costume and convinces Batman to take her under his wing (he sets the conditions that she must follow every order, with a ‘one strike, you’re out’ kind of policy). She undergoes an unspecified training period to get in Proper Shape For Crime Fighting and Batman starts taking her on various patrols and investigations.
During this time, she also teams up with Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) on more than one occasion (one of my fav panels below, just bc its so stylized lmao. its Cute)
During this time, in true Robin Tradition, Steph builds up quite the rapport with Batman, providing a lighter/comedic side and being a general breath of fresh air and foil to the Dark Knight. (just LOOK at this banter & Bargaining for the batmobile!!! a TRUE ROBIN)
There’s a couple cases that I won't get too far into (but one i want to briefly mention involves Zsasz and Steph going almost a bit too far when trying to subdue him. its a very clear parallel to Jason & serves as foreshadowing for how War Games will play out i.e., Steph’s fate)
Now during this time, there’s an assassin/merc who is killing off teens who were suspected to be Robin (Tim Drake), which Batman catches wind of and the Dynamic Duo moves in to put an End to. (look at this smug lil robin, catching the Bad Guy™ off guard. ADORABLE)
Another thing to note now, is how Eager Robin is to jump onto the case and into the fray. and how carefully she toes the line when following/questioning batman’s orders. this is touched on many times often either with her able to juuuuust reason with the caped crusader enough to Bend his own orders or even to change his mind on occasion.
(a thing i want to note here with this panel and with this particular time in Steph’s career as Robin is that the writer had her referring to Batman as ‘Boss’. whether this was intentional or not, it most closely resembles, to me, Carrie Kelley’s mannerisms as Robin. i.e. another Robin that the writers may have been using as inspo/to parallel. Carrie’s time as Robin is also defined by Batman’s grief from losing Jason, and is given a very similar probationary status that Steph is given during her time as Robin. coincidence? maybe. but i think not.)
While they lose track of the villain initially, Steph’s quick thinking to place trackers on her is what saves the mission. at the Moment at least. Batman makes a decision to bring Robin along when tracking their prey, but orders her to stay behind in the batplane & ‘not touch anything’ unless ordered to do so. which is where we get the Defining Moment:
When Steph, against orders, jumps into the fray. its something to be admired, and very Typical Robin Behavior (bc where would they be if they weren't impulsive and, well, KIDS, amirite?) but unfortunately, her decision costs them the chance of apprehending the villain, and Batman stays true to his word...
and she's Fired (g o d I'm not the biggest fan of damion scott’s art but this look BROKE MY HEART. i can practically HEAR those choked back tears and see that quivering lip like... G O D BRUCE NO. GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE. ANYTHING ELSE THAN WHATS GONNA HAPPEN)
here’s where I'm gonna TL;DR War Games for y’all bc.... holy shit its a LOT. and Steph’s involvement really only begins it, and essentially ends it. (literally lmao. she's featured a little throughout but like. its a Crossover Event™ for a reason. everyone gets a little bit of the spotlight, which means a bit of shuffling around ofc) but Anyways
tl;dr - steph takes one of Batman’s contingency plans on her way out of the cave & implements it w/out being aware of a few Key Details. all out War breaks amongst the different gangs of gotham, with Batman & company trying to regain control of the city & maintain order. Black Mask resurfaces, catches and tortures Steph to learn details about the plan and makes his own grab for power (fun fact, for those of you paying attention to the Big Picture: this essentially sets up for his position later on in Under The (Red) Hood when Jason starts wrestling that control away from him) Steph manages to escape, Batman takes her to Dr. Thompkins clinic, and Leslie reveals that her condition is critical. bruce makes it back in time to be by steph’s side for this:
and then she dies ;-;
BUT THIS IS COMICS- so its revealed initially that Leslie withheld treatment to save Steph’s life to Make A Point and try to dissuade Gotham Youth from following Steph’s path. BUT-BUT WAIT THERES MORE BC THIS IS ~*C O M I C S*~ so its ALSO revealed later on that steph DIDNT die. Leslie helped fake her death and blah blah blah, Steph comes back, gets to be spoiler again, then batgirl and the rest as they say is history
anyways. STRAIGHT FROM THE BAT’S MOUTH THANKS. Steph WAS really™ a Robin™ and as much as DC wants to pry that from my gay goblin hands they WONT be able to. and anyways... She Earned It. okay. give this girl the Respect she deserves.
(now since I'm a Shipping Blog™, ima add some thoughts regarding her parallel to other robins and how Theoretically a relationship with raven might work out)
Again, the biggest parallel that DEFINES War Games and Steph’s time as Robin, is that to Jason Todd. (fun fact/sidenote: they’re both Leos, so like. Another Connection btwn the two lmao) They’re both impulsive and eager to prove themselves, and follow Batman with unwavering faith and loyalty (up to a Certain Breaking Point that is). They’ve got especially cheeky attitude and flair for drama, and hey. Narratively speaking, writers seem to have a penchant for drawing a few connecting lines between them (again, by starting the WG TPB off with Bruce mourning on Jason’s bday & setting a Tone for the overall event. and then again, by having a major character for UtRH be the very same villain that killed our former girl wonder)
Now with those lines drawn, and with an understanding of how Jason has interacted with Raven in-canon (with mostly cordial interactions and for the most part respectful analysis of each other’s abilities & strengths), & no known connection between Steph & Rae as of yet, we can really only assume a few things:
-like most of the batboys, Raven is very likely to get along with Steph and to respect her abilities given that Steph respects her in turn.
-Steph’s bright, extroverted personality could again work as a good foil/compliment to Raven’s more introverted/muted one.
-theyve got what i like to call the Bad Dad™ connection (with Steph’s being a former Gotham Rogue™, and Raven’s... well.. y'all Know) Steph’s already shown great Morbid Humor regarding this part of her life (shown in her interactions with Cass) and is very willing to bond with others over Sucky Parents
-while stephanie has a canonical Love™ of Waffles, and raven (at least in regards to her Most Popular fanon from the 03 cartoon) has a fanonical love of them as well. Hence, they ARE the Waffle Queens (embrace the ridiculousness, guys. DO IT)
-Since steph is not an Adopted member of Bruce’s family (& again, more often than not they have attempted to dissuade her from vigilantism) and similarly, due to Batmans Dislike of meta-humans/outsiders messing with Affairs in His City, as well as some of his canonical Distrust™ for Raven due to her mysterious background/nature. this could be another minor/potential bonding point between the two
-likely more??? its getting late, and not much else I can think of off the top of my head, but i might add more to this later.
as a ship StephRae has as much potential as any other, and since there’s not a lot of canon to really go off, fans can really take it.... wherever and i think thats beautiful
#randywrites#steph meta#long post#<- for mobile users in case that cut doesnt work bc OMG THIS DID GET LONG IM SO SORRY#I'm still So upset abt war games and i could probably move on & start reading her 09batgirl run but like.... I'm not Emotionally ready yet#she's FUN and she's GREAT and there's a very Obvious Reason why the fandom ignores her as a Robin and i WILL be bitter until they start#giving her the respect she DESERVES DAMMIT#its a Read so be sure to grab some popcorn kids

Baby Danvers
Kalex Day Six: Kink Alphabet
Friday, 11/22 - Kink Alphabet - A kink from any letter from the word “Supergirl”: pregnancy
I own nothing. I also apologize for nothing.
Words: 2,729
==================
Alex stared at the little stick in her hand.
It was positive. She was pregnant.
The procedure had worked.
She was pregnant.
Alex sat down on the closed toilet seat and tried to remember to breathe. She was pregnant. She needed to let it settle in her mind before anything else.
Kara was going to be ecstatic. The Kryptonian was also going to put Alex’s overprotective tendencies to shame. The agent didn’t even want to contemplate what her mother, J’onn, and the rest of her insane family would do.
She was going to end up killing someone by the end of this. She just knew it.
At least her family would help her get away with it.
Well…Kara would at least.
“Alex?” Kara’s voice drifted towards the bathroom from the bedroom. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” She called back to her wife.
“Fine as in okay of FINE?” She asked after a moment.
“A little bit of both I think?” Alex admitted uncertainly.
“Can I come in?” The door was closed. Alex was well aware that Kara had undoubtedly already looked through the door.
“Yea, please.” Alex held up the test.
Kara’s face fell. “Oh, Alex…I’m sorry.” She had her human wrapped in her arms before she could say anything.
“No, no, Kara,” Alex shook her head. “Look at it.”
Kara took the test from her, reading the result. She read it again before looking up at her partner.
“You’re pregnant?” Her voice and face were filled with something akin to awe. “It worked?”
Alex nodded, feeling tears come to her eyes. “Yes, I’m pregnant.”
“We’re going to have a baby.” Kara dropped the test in the sink so she could gently wrap Alex in the tightest hug she dared, her own happy tears trailing down her cheeks. “We’re going to be parents.”
“We are,” Alex nuzzled into Kara’s neck. “We really are.” She chuckled. “Everyone’s going to fight over who gets to be godparents.”
“We’ll figure it out.” Kara swept Alex into a bridal carry. “Now, we celebrate before we tell everyone.”
It took them a week to decide how to tell their extended friends and family the good news. They had decided to wait until after Alex’s doctor’s appointment to confirm it, just in case the test had been wrong. It would not have been the first time.
“Maybe we should just send out a mass e-mail instead,” Alex looked over the stacks of boxes. “Did your mother’s get there alright?”
“It did, and Lena’s already got everything ready to go.” Kara said, reaching for one of the stacks to double check they hadn’t forgotten anyone.
Who knew one could privately buy bulk key-chains?
“Of course she does,” Alex rolled her eyes. Lena had been watching her like a hawk for the last three weeks. She and the doctors involved were the only ones who knew they were trying again. “At this rate, we’re going to need to name the baby after her.”
“Alexandra Lena Danvers is a perfectly suitable name,” Kara defended.
Alex rolled her eyes at the thought of naming her child after herself. “She’s going to argue that it should be Lena Alexandra for having to put up with both our shenanigans.”
“We already decided she gets to be godmother.” Kara said with a smile. “Along with Winn, Lucy, Sam, and Jess.”
“Our kid will be able to get away with murder and no one will ever know it even happened.” Alex joked, leaning back against Kara.
“Kids,” Kara corrected absently, arm wrapping around the woman in her lap.
“Right,” Alex touched her still flat stomach. It wouldn’t remain that way for much longer. “We ready for this?”
“Yes,” Kara replied. “Let’s go.”
The trip to L-Corp (because the security there put even the DEO to shame at times) was short. Alex briefly mourned the loss of her ability to drive her bike, but it was worth the trade off.
Lena was waiting for them when they got there. She hugged both of them.
“Most everyone is hear,” she told them, “we’re still waiting for J’onn and the rest of the PIBs to get here.” Ruby had coined the term ages ago; the rest of them had simply adopted it.
“Good, but why are you down here?” Kara looked her over. “Did someone say something?”
Lena shook her head. “No, but if I had to listen to one more theory about this meeting I was going to throttle someone. Or possibly throw them from the balcony. I haven’t decided yet.”
Alex laughed. “Come on, before someone does something stupid.”
“I already had Jess lock all the liquor cabinets in the building. No one can get in the labs either.” Lena had taken every precaution she could think of. With their group, there was no such thing as overkill.
“Finally!” Sam spun in her chair. “Are the rest here yet?”
“Calm down, we’ll be told eventually.” Eliza spoke calmly. “J’onn just texted that they are on their way.”
“Yea, but we want to know now!” Ruby pouted at them. Yes, she was getting to miss half a school day for this but that didn’t mean she wasn’t curious.
“Not going to work,” Kara told her. “But, you can help me pass these out.”
Glad to be given something to do, the teenager got up and took one of the bags Kara was carrying. She was even more curious now that presents were involved. Presents of varying sizes even, given the ones for Eliza, J’onn, Winn, Lucy, Sam, Jess, and Lena were larger than for the rest.
James and Nia arrived shortly after they were done passing out the boxes. The group from the DEO was next. With everyone who could be there in person had arrived, Lena turned on the monitors. Clark and Lois, little Jon balanced on his dad’s lap, and Martha Kent took up one screen. Barry and Team Flash waved from another. Felicity grinned at them, her own daughter on her lap as Oliver and the rest of Team Arrow were arrayed behind her. Sara, Ava, and the rest of the Legends were dressed in period garb but were all clustered around the camera on their end. Alura was by herself, but her smile was wide and genuine as took in her daughters and their found family.
“Alright,” Kara was fairly bouncing in place. “Everyone can open their gifts now, and then we’ll tell you what this is about.”
Permission given, everyone with a box tore into them. Lena nearly burst into tears when she read the t-shirt her box contained. Eliza, Alura, and J’onn did start crying.
“Are you serious?” Winn squeaked.
“It worked?” Lena looked at them. She was clutching her ‘World’s Smartest Aunt’ shirt to her chest. At the moment, she didn’t even care about the ‘godmother’ and ‘aunt’ keychains still in the box.
“It worked,” Alex confirmed. “I’m ten weeks as of today.”
“Congratulations!” Barry hugged Kara tightly. “I’m going to hug you, please don’t kill me.” He hugged Alex as well. She laughed at him, amused that she still terrified him after all this time.
Team Flash was laughing over their connection. Barry had barely gotten his ‘uncle’ key chain before he had run out in excitement.
“Congrats Skirt,” Mick muttered, turning to search for a beer. He slipped the keychain into his pocket. It wouldn’t due for them to see that he was touched at the gesture.
Alura held the t-shirt as if it were made from the finest silk. She didn’t have words to say how happy she was at this turn of events. Her only child was to be a mother! She was to be a grandmother!
“Your father would be so proud of you,” she said, “you both must come visit once she is born.”
“We will,” Alex promised. “After all, one of the twins will be named after you.”
“TWINS!!!” Several people shouted.
“Twins,” the couple confirmed.
“Alexandra Lena and Alura Elizabeth Danvers-El,” Kara announced. She smiled at her wife. It had taken some effort, but she had won Alex over on the names. Both of their mothers were honored, as was their best friend.
“I am going to make so many clothes,” Winn whispered to himself. He was clutching his shirt and ‘godfather’ keychain to his chest as if someone was going to snatch them away from him.
“Are you certain that they’ll both be girls?” Ava asked. She still wasn’t used to being around tiny children, so the ‘aunt’ keychain she had received was causing her some anxiety. She had no idea how to be an aunt.
“No male chromosome,” Alex explained, motioning between her and Kara. “So unless something happens we didn’t think to account for, they’re girls.”
“Good, then we’ll start out numbering the batboys.” Ruby declared.
Clark laughed. He would need to forward that comment to Bruce. “We’ll save Jon’s baby things to pass down.”
“Same,” Oliver agreed, not to be outdone by the Boy Scout in blue. He was honored to be named honorary uncle, just as he was touched that they had included William and Mia both as ‘cousins’.
“Have you chosen Godparents yet?” J’onn asked. His granddaughters would be the most protected babies in the city.
“Lena, Winn, Sam, Lucy, and Jess.” Alex told them. “Non-negotiable.”
The ‘meeting’ further devolved into a party. Jess actually unbent enough to hug Kara, touched and honored that she was chosen to be godmother. A smart move on their part, she thought.
Someone would need to make sure the rest didn’t go overboard.
It took two and a half months before someone got the bright idea to try and kidnap Alex for leverage over Supergirl.
They lasted all of two minutes once Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter caught up to them.
At five months, someone else tried to do the same for revenge against Kara Danvers.
It didn’t work any better for them.
Everyone got a bit of stunned laughter when it was learned that Lillian Luthor sent a ‘strongly worded’ reprimand to both parties outlining why they were idiots. That put them all on guard.
Lena nearly drove Alex around the bend with the amount of security features she tried to add to their apartment. Alex firmly drew the line when the woman outright offered the entire floor below her penthouse for them to move into.
“Lena, no.” Alex turned to her wife. “Kara, no.” She turned to everyone else gathered for a family dinner. “No. We’re not doing it. Both attempts were nowhere even close to here.” She crossed her arms over her rounded belly, feeling one of the babies kicking. She hoped in agreement and not reprimand. “Need I remind you, Lena still has at least monthly assassination attempts. I’m also mostly on desk duty, not even lab work and nothing in the field.”
“Those are just the two that were successful,” Jess pointed out. It had taken some doing, but she had finally accepted more of an active role in the Superfamily. “At current, there have been a total of seventeen attempts to kidnap you as an ally of Supergirl and nine as the wife of Kara Danvers.” She continued to tap away at her tablet. “My mistake, one of the kidnap attempts for Mrs. Danvers was actually the dropping off of a pre-baby shower gift from the Sirens.”
Alex thunked her head on the table. “I’m perfect capable of protecting myself and my babies.”
“We know that,” Kara was quick to reassure her. “We’re just concerned. Alex, Poison Ivy offered to plant killer plants as a security feature after the first attempt. Livewire offered herself as a guard under house arrest. Half our friends have offered either security measures or pre-emptive strikes.”
“All of you are blowing this out of proportion.” Alex tried to argue. “Pam makes that offer to pretty much everyone she considers a friend at some point. Livewire gets bored and like to bother us. All of our friends are being over-protective.” She looked up long enough to glare at all of them. “I never want to hear another word from any of you about me being overprotective.”
“I don’t think they are,” Jess flipped her tablet around to show Alex what she had brought up. “Agent Vasquez just updated the information.”
There was a thump and a curse outside, a cheery ‘I got it!’ that sounded as if it were Barry, and then silence. A moment later, both Kara’s and J’onn phones chirped with an incoming text.
Alex thunked her head to the table again. “This is ridiculous.”
Lena sipped her glass of wine. “It might be, but we all have perfectly valid concerns. Need I remind you, that my mother has yet to make her play.”
“Fine,” Alex felt well played. “We’ll do it. But this is it. No more.”
Kara patted her shoulder. “We’ll do our best.”
When Alex saw the well-appointed nursey, she grit her teeth and said nothing. She hacked into the security system to run her own tests instead.
At seven months, she was put on bed rest. She growled the entire time, but Kara stood firm.
“It doesn’t mean you have to stay in bed the whole time,” she tried to reason. “It just means that you need to slow down.”
“I’ve already slowed down!” She glowered at the blonde. “Now I can’t even do fucking paperwork! None of the recruits are even slightly terrified of me anymore. I can’t even put on my own boots!”
“Hey, hey,” Kara hugged her. “The recruits are totally still terrified of you. And you needed new boots anyway.” She kissed the side of Alex’s head. “You hate paperwork.”
“It was something to do,” Alex pouted. “What am I supposed to do all day?”
“Well…”
“Kara, what did you do?”
“It’s more of a gift from Mom?” Kara dashed out of the room, coming back with a medium sized dog following her.
“…Alura sent us an alien dog.”
“Yes,” Kara nodded. “His name is Krypto, and he’s already housetrained. You already know all the commands, even if your accent is terrible.”
“Gee, thanks.” Alex eyed the dog eying her right back. “Does he have powers?”
“He does,” Kara said. “But I already thought of that! Kryptonian dogs are slightly telepathic and very intelligent. He understands where and when to use his powers.”
“…this is your addition to the already obscene amount of security features.”
“Technically it’s my mother’s addition.”
“Technically,” Alex rolled her eyes. “Okay. He can stay.” The dog began wagging his tail, approaching Alex now that he knew he could. She stroked his head, sighing. At least she wouldn’t be by herself.
Krypto proved his worth when Lillian finally made her move at eight months.
The woman had taken into account Supergirl, Lena, several of their wide group of friends and allies, and even a few of the ‘villains’.
She did not take into account a furious canine that decimated the entire group she sent to take Alex into custody while she was engaging Supergirl elsewhere.
“Good boy,” Alex praised him, scratching his head.
Krypto wagged his tail hard enough to shake his whole hindquarters. He knew he was a good boy who had done a good job. It was still nice to be told so.
“Alex!” Kara flew in thru the window. “Are you…” she trailed off. “Good boy.” She patted the dog on the head. “I’ll take them in.” She smiled widely at Alex. “Lucy and Vas have already taken Lillian into custody.” She quickly texted Lena and J’onn. “And now they can inform her that her goons failed.”
“Um…Kara?”
“What?” Kara looked up, taking in her wife’s paling features. “Alex?” She dashed to her side. “What is it?”
“I think my water just broke.”
“Oh Rao.”
Alexandra Lena and Alura Elizabeth Danvers-El were born seven hours later in the DEO Medbay. Alex, exhausted, leaned against Kara as they held their daughters. They both already had tufts of dark hair and people were betting on if they would keep the blue eyes or not.
“Their perfect,” Kara whispered softly. “You’re perfect.” She pressed a kiss to Alex’s head.
“Yea, they really are,” Alex was holding her namesake. “I kinda want to do it again.”
Kara chuckled. “I think that might be the meds talking.”
“Maybe,” Alex agreed. “But next time, it’s your turn.”

HS Au Stiles who is not athletic but LOVES baseball over everything so he is determined to be on the team but really all he does is just convince Finstock verbally to let him be a part of the team, maybe he is a sort of batboy or something while being a benchwarmer. So he’s not playing much, but he wants to have his fun and he loves being a little shit. Also, he wants to prove to Lydia that he CAN get totally get a girl, it just can’t be anyone from his school who knows all his embarrassing moments. So he comes up with this idea and throws the ball over to their best rival team asking about any cute sisters and with his number on it. It’s a joke they even still play against them really since they always lose because they have superstar DEREK HALE who Stiles knows will go pro and he kinda totally will get his signature one day before he’s famous, he just needs to make sure no one from his team finds out about his minor man crush on the player because it’s betrayal. Of course he meant to make the ball hop and roll into the other dugout but nope, it goes straight toward Derek who is stretching and it hits Derek, which is totally Derek’s fault because how is this the exact time he doesn’t catch a ball? and Stiles kind of wants to hide because what if Derek punches him now but also, imagine if his plan works and he does get to date one of Derek’s sisters? First of all, his sisters have to be hot because look at Derek and second it would give him an in to become Derek’s best friend and maybe get free season tickets in the future when he becomes a national superstar And of course, Derek is appalled. No, he’s definitely not letting any baseball players get to his sisters, this is ridiculous, but also he’s angry because it’s Stiles and he wants Stiles to ask for HIS number Nothing happens, and Stiles didn’t really expect it to but he’s still kind of disappointed. What he doesn’t know is that Derek totally stuffed the ball into his bag, somewhere in the back where it was securely hidden and wouldn’t be lost. What he does notice is kinda off his game, and a few of his foulballs are straight line drives to Stiles’ dugout, straight to where he’s sitting behind the chain link and Stiles has the feeling that it is absolutely intentional because he knows Derek has more control over his aim, and he knows Derek had homered on this pitcher before. He feels bad now but also hey, at least that gives them a chance and maybe this accidental joke will become a tactic. He can’t play baseball but he can play mind games. Derek goes home still totally frustrated even after letting his anger out in the batting cage after the game. He ends up lying on his bed after his shower, with Stiles’ ball in hand, staring at the writing. And he starts scheming. He manages to convince Cora to take Stiles out on a date and pretends he has to be there too to supervise. Naturally, Cora and Laura quickly catch on to Derek’s little (huge) crush and play along. Stiles is totally in heaven because he keeps going out on these dates with Cora, and even Laura wants to hang out with him, but it’s also a little confusing because it never feels like a date anymore and doesn’t let Stiles do ANYTHING with Cora, glares at him when he tries to hold her hand, speaks up from his grumpy brooding whenever he tries to flirt with Cora. And Cora isn’t really trying to get him alone or anything. She doesn’t mind having Derek there all the time at all. The most she does is give him a kiss on the cheek once when Derek is dropping him off at home, and Stiles quickly hurried inside before Derek could run him over because that look he threw was MURDEROUS. So Stiles becomes a regular at the Hale house but the dating things falls completely flat, and he doesn’t really mind because he found some great friends - he guesses he’s friends with Derek now but he can’t really tell, Derek is still so defensive. Derek thought it was frustrating to watch Stiles from afar, but no, nope, being right next to him and always being around his quirky little sayings, his humor and laughter and those hands and those beautiful lips and not being able to do anything about the way Stiles makes him feel is way worse. But he’s pretty sure Stiles is absolutely straight so he doesn’t do anything. Until the stress starts affecting his game and no, that will not do. Laura helps him come up with an idea. Derek starts leaving little messages for Stiles on baseballs, as he works up his courage and Stiles’ suspects okay? But he only get a confirmation before the next game they play against each other when he hears Derek shout his name and turns in time to see a ball heading his way. Miraculously, he catches it. On it Derek has written “will you go out with me?” And suddenly the realization hits Stiles HARD. and he sprint over like no one has ever seen him run before, just to tell Derek yes and kiss him likes he’s never been kissed before in the middle of the field. Years late they get married on the diamond in Derek’s home team mlb ballpark.

I’m Capable!
Relationship: Jason Todd x Reader (angstyyyyyyyy)
Summary: Hi! Can you do a Jason Todd x reader where the reader goes on her first mission and Jason gets like super overprotective and they fight about it
Author: wazzup nerds, I’m back!
Key: Y/N= your name, L/N= your last name, S/H/N= your superhero name
Warnings!: Language, death
After months of training and researching in the safety of the BatCave, Bruce finally agreed to let you go on patrol. You seemed to excel at helping Batman stop street crime, so much so that Bruce approached you one evening, before leaving for patrol, and took you aside.
“Y/N, you’ve been a real help keeping Gotham’s streets free of crime as S/H/N. I’m proud of how far you’ve come and all the training you’ve put into this,” Bruce gave you a smile, his highest sign of pride, and continued, “Would you want to join us on the next mission? Before you say anything, I want you to know that missions are way more dangerous then patrol. Things can go wrong very easily on a mission.” Bruce looked you up and down. “What do you say?”
You took a deep breath, you knew this was going to be difficult but it wasn’t anything you felt you couldn’t handle. You looked Bruce in the eyes and sternly stated, “Yes. I’m in.”
Weeks before your mission with Batman and the Batboys, you were continually debriefed by Tim and trained harder by Dick and Damian than you’d ever trained with them before. It was to the point were you had to disappear if you wanted any alone time. The only person who seemed to ignore you was Jason, which wasn’t surprising.
You and Jason never really got along, you always felt as if Jason thought you didn’t belong with them. Maybe it was because you were a girl. Maybe it was because he just didn’t really take to newcomers. You don’t think you’ll ever know the reason, but you weren’t planning on going anywhere anytime soon.
One of the times, three days before the mission, you were trying to hide out and get a little peace and quiet, you ran smack dab into Jason. You stumbled backwards from the solid mass and looked at who you ran into. When you saw it was Jason, and Jason had recognized you, you both grimaced.
“Watch where you’re walking,” he grumbled.
“Whatever,” you mumbled back. You went to continue walking but he grabbed your arm. “What?”
Jason’s face distorted in a compassionate kind of way before it returned to his normal scowl. “Don’t go on the mission. You’ll get hurt.”
Surprised by the comment, your eyebrows shot up. “W-what?”
Spinning you around to face him face to face, Jason leaned down to be eye level with you. “Don’t. Go.”
If his tone wasn’t so patronizing, you would’ve thought Jason actually cared about your well-being. But alas, he sounded like he wasn’t happy that you were tagging along. Angrily, you spat, “I can do what I want. I’m capable of anything! You have no say in where I go or what I do. You aren’t the boss of me!” You snatched your arm away from Jason’s grip and stormed off.
The day of the mission, the entire manor seemed to be on edge. Changes were being made to the plans every hour until everything was perfect, or as close to perfect as they could get. You did your best to help out or be out of the way, so everything could get done.
You sat in the living room, trying to focus on reading, glancing at the clock every few minutes. You tapped your foot as your eyes read and reread the same paragraph over and over. Time was moving as slow as it could until you heard feet trot down the hall towards the living room. In walked Tim, his hair raggedy and his eyes zooming over a stack of papers.
“Everything ready,” you asked, setting your book face down on the side table.
“As ready as we’ll ever be,” Tim sighed, “Y/N, this is one of the most important missions I’ve ever had to help plan and I’m nervous.”
You gave a little giggle, “Everyone gets nervous Tim.”
Tim looked at you seriously, “You don’t understand. I’m never nervous because I always have a solid and flexible plan. But this,” he smacked the papers,” this is complete nonsense!”
You lifted your eyebrows at his outburst. “Do you not believe in Bruce?”
Tim sighed even deeper than before, “It’s not that. It’s because this is so dangerous that I want to make sure no one will get hurt or worse.” With those words his eyes had shifted off of you and to the floor.
Your face got red with frustration and a little bit of anger as Tim inadvertently reminded you of your run in with Jason. “I can take care of myself, thank you very much.” You watched Tim’s face develop a blush as you stood from your chair and walked out of the room, going to the Batcave to wait for the debriefing.
Dick, Damian, Jason, Barbara, Stephanie, Tim, Bruce, and yourself as sat around the debriefing table in the Batcave and listened to Bruce go completely over the plan.
“Everyone understand?” Bruce waited for nods. “Good, okay, now for teams. Tim?”
Tim stood up, “Dick and Babs you’ll start here in the cave then Dick will hit the field after Babs works her magic. Damian you’re with Bruce, as per usual. Steph, you and me are strike team 1,” he pauses as Steph lets out a ‘yes!’, “that makes Jason and Y/N as strike team 2.”
Internally, you are groaning for a thousand years. Out of everyone in this cave and on this team, you got stuck with Jason. Jason! The one person out of everyone who didn’t want you on this mission is your teammate. Oh the how the fates like to mess you up.
After hating life for a moment, you look at Jason and see the he doesn’t seem phased. It’s probably because Tim told him that he’d have to deal with you before this and he prepared himself for it. You guessed he got all of his groaning out before hand.
Bruce spoke up again, “Get with your teammate and be prepared to leave in the next few minutes, I need to talk to Alfred then we’ll be off. Remember, you and your teammate are integral to this mission. Protect each other. It’s about to get dangerous.”
You and Jason walk over to your bikes. He stops you before you reach your bike. “You heard Bruce, this is going to be dangerous. Back out now. You aren’t going to be safe.”
Your face starts boiling. “He also said we’re all integral parts of this mission. I’m just as important as you are. We also have to protect each other, remember that?” You got right into his face.
Jason remained calm which infuriated you even more. “I’m trying to protect you before something bad happens,” his scowl makes his words mean nothing.
You watch Bruce walk to the Batmobile. You stare Jason right in his eyes, “Time to go.”
No one knows where it went wrong. No one knows how it went wrong. All anyone knows is that is went off the walls wrong.
The last thing you remember was Jason and you making your way to your ambush positions, but there was no one there. That was when you heard the sirens and the spotlights shown on you and him.
“S/H/N we gotta move! Go, go, go!” You ran ahead of Jason barely as he fired on the oncoming rouges. When he had a second, he yelled into his comm, “S/H/N and I are under heavy fire, requesting back up.”
Through static you heard Bruce’s voice, “We can’t get through to you guys! You need to retreat, get out of there!”
You see a clear ally and grab Jason’s arm, “Through here!” You drag him through and hit a wall. “Shit!” You spin around and watch as you two begin to be surrounded. Bruce’s words echo through your head, Protect each other. You look at Jason, “Red Hood, you climb. I’ll hold them off and when you reach the top, send down a rope. Got it?”
Even with his mask on, you could see the frown as he shook him head. “Red Hood! I’m not asking! Just do it.”
Begrudgingly, you watch as he began to scale the wall, one thing you knew you were bad at. I’ll have to work on that, you thought. It wasn’t until you saw blow back close to Jason’s foot that you remembered your job. You had to protect.
Jason looked down from his climbing and watch as you took on the advancing forces, encouraging him to pic up his pace. He knew you shouldn’t have come. He told Bruce. He told Tim. He told Dick, Damian, Steph, Babs, anyone he thought would listen, but no one did. He couldn’t lose you.
He swung his leg on top of the roof, readying a rope to throw down, when he watched you get hit. He didn’t see where it went, but it didn’t look good from the way you reacted. “Y/N!” He saw you turn and he dropped the rope down to you. He watched you grab it and he pulled you up to him. All he could think was to get you out of there.
Once he did, Jason grabbed your arm and started to run with you. He noticed that you were slowing down and, without a second thought, scooped you up into his arms. “Come on! We got to get out of here,” he looked at you an noticed how pale you were getting. “Y/N, stay with me. I promised to protect you damn it.”
You two were at your bikes when Jason set you back down, but you couldn’t stand. It was at that point that Jason realized you were shot in the stomach. “Shit!” Jason spoke into the comm, “Bruce, Y/N got shot and she isn’t looking good. We’re at our bikes, get here now!” Bruce replied but Jason was laser focused on you.
“Y/N I told you this was gonna be too dangerous. Why wouldn’t you listen to me? I love you and I wanted to keep you safe!” Jason’s head fell and he felt his tears start streaming down his cheeks.
A voice that sounded softer than the wind, whispered, “You love me?”
Jason fell to his knees, helmet discarded, and looked you in the eyes, “Always have.” He listen to you chuckled but it tuned into sour coughing. “Please, you gotta stay with me. I can’t lose you.”
You looked like you were about to say something, but Jason watched as your head lobed to the side. Lifeless.
And Jason sobbed over you forever.

Do You Think Red Is My Color?
An: This is for an Anon who wanted a reader who had a personality like Isabelle Lightwood with any of the Batboys so hopefully it turned out how they liked it ^_^
“Do you think red is my color?
Jason’s blue eyes shift from the magazine he was flipping through on his lap to you. He flicks his eyes over your form appreciating the sight.
“I always thought it was gold, but I’m making this look really good,” you say spinning around to admire the outfit.
If he was honest, there was nothing particularly special about the outfit, at least by your standards. A cropped halter top and shorts that nearly left your ass hanging out wasn’t something that bothered him anymore. You were confident in the way that you looked and often showed it with your choice in outfits. When you first got together, he often found himself becoming angry at your choice in clothing and demanded that you tone down your dress a bit. However, after the first couple of screaming matches and a week without talking to each other, he’d dropped the issue. The color was nice though, red was probably one of the colors he liked on you best.
“You look good, babe.” He said with a shrug. “We’re just going to meet up with everyone though, I don’t think they’ll care what you are wearing.”
“Jason!” you say with a gasp in faux outrage. “You should use every opportunity you can to be at your best, even if it’s just around family.”
“If you say so.”
“I know so,” you say with a smirk walking over to your dresser and slipping on bracelets over your wrists. “Does the bar we are going to have good food?”
“Don’t know, never been,” he says turning his attention back to the page in front of him.
You cut your eyes over to the bed were your boyfriend was lounging, slightly perturbed at his nonchalant attitude.
You walk over to the bed and begin to straddle him. He looks up at you and raises an eyebrow in question as you pull the magazine from his hands.
“What?” He questions.
“Why does it seem like you don’t want to leave the house?” You ask using your hand to push some of his hair back.
He sighs and places his hands on your hips, “Truthfully, I’d rather stay home. We have a perfectly good television here, and the only screaming that I’ll have to hear is yours.”
“If we stayed home, how would I show off my pretty outfit?”
“You can show me all the pretty outfits you want, here, at home,” he says slipping his hand to the back of your head and pulling you down for a quick kiss.
You smile when his lips touch yours but you pull away and place your hands on his shoulders.
“I want to go and watch the game, with our friends, in a large crowded bar, and eat onion rings,” you say wiping a bit of your lipstick off his lips with your thumb. “So, change out of that disgusting shirt so I can go have fun.”
He looks at you with a frown on his face and stares blankly before he relents with a sigh and a roll of his eyes.
“Fine.”
***
“There he is,” you say pointing to one of the tables. The familiar mop of dark hair and the orange spacewoman sitting next to him easily give away Dick’s position.
“I see him,” Jason mumbles already annoyed with loud atmosphere of the bar.
“Don’t be such a sour puss,” you say squeezing his large hand in yours and pulling him through the bar.
As you walk through the bar a whistle rolls through the air and almost simultaneously Jason scans the crowd looking for the offender. When he looks around he can see the not so subtle side glances being cast at your form and it causes his shoulders to tense up in irritation.
“Hello Richard,” you say with a smile as you approach.
His blue eyes lookup and catch yours and though he groans at your words, he can’t help the smile that comes across his face.
“When are you going to stop calling me that,” He says standing up to give you an embrace.
“Never. The fact that you willingly let people call you Dick, is something that I will never understand,” you say pulling back from the hug.
“Most people’s minds don’t go there when they say my name,” he defends.
“Oh, they most certainly do Richard, don’t be silly.” Your gaze shifts to the redheaded woman standing beside him, “Hello Kori, you’re looking extra highlighter orange today.”
“Hey don’t-“Richard starts.
“Don’t get your panties in a twist, bird brain. It’s a compliment,” You say as you hug the tall woman. “You’re absolutely glowing today, Kori.”
The woman smiles at the praise and returns the embrace and the two of you sit across from each other, “Thank you.”
“It’s the sex, isn’t it?” You question with a raised eyebrow.
Dick begins coughing, seemingly choking on air while Jason let’s out an embarrassed cough of his own.
Kori’s green eyes blink at you for a moment before she answers, “Yes, it is. How did you know?”
“I know post coital glow when I see it,” you say with a wink.
“You’re very perceptive, where did you pick up such a skill?”
“Experience.”
“Why don’t we order some drinks before the game starts and things really get crazy?” Dick interjects, cheeks red with embarrassment.
“Thank God,” Jason mumbles as he begins to call for the waitress.
***
After a round of beer, three tequila shots each, and an apple martini for you, the four of you find yourselves excitedly yelling at the screen with the other patrons at the bar. There are thirty seconds left in the game and your team is ahead by two points.
“Don’t be stupid!” You yell out from your position on Jason’s lap as you watch the player with the ball timidly make a plan.
A few patrons yell in agreement and another decides to be more direct with their commentary.
“Yeah, listen to the pretty lady.”
Jason’s hands almost instinctively pull you against him more at the comment.
In your haze, your eyes scan the people at the bar and find that the remark came from a man sitting not too far away from you. You send him a wink and he allows a suggestive smile to cross his face.
You turn your attention away from him and back to the screen and find yourself clapping and cheering with the others as the opposing team misses their last chance to score and the time on the clock winds down.
You miss the way that Jason’s eyes narrow at the exchange and the frown that pulls at his lips.
As the television flashes to the individual players for post-game interviews the loudness of the bar begins to subside. You stand and stretch; your body feels tight even despite all of the alcohol. Your shirt begins to ride up, revealing even more of your stomach than it was previously.
Jason notices the man who commented on you earlier, take a long sip of his beer as his eyes scan up and down your form, lingering on your shapelier places.
His foot starts to tap in anger and he feels warm, not only from the closeness of the packed room, but from the amount of alcohol running through his veins. He tries to stay quiet and sip at some of the water that he’d ordered, if he reacted the way he wanted to, he might cause more trouble than the situation is actually worth.
“I think we’re going to head out guys,” Dick says as he stands up, his legs slightly unsteady from the drinking.
Kori stands with him as they use each other to steady themselves, “This was fun, next time perhaps we should watch sports ball at our apartment.”
“Did you not know what sport was being played?” You question blinking at her.
“Yes?” She lies.
“Next time,” you pause as hiccup forces its way past your lips. “We’ll do this at your place and I’ll explain the rules to you, okay?”
She nods and the two of them begin to stumble their way out of the bar.
You turn to Jason, “I’m going to go to the bathroom and then we can grro-I mean go.”
“Be careful,” he warns as you stumble away from the table. “You look a little dizzy.”
“I can do this,” you retort hands on your hips. “I’m an adult.”
You begin to walk forward and almost instantly your foot catches on air and you’re flying forward. Jason leaps from his seat to catch you but he’s too late. Large hands grip your shoulders and force you to the upright position.
You blink dreamily at the form in front of you before you realize that it is the same man who’s been flirting with you the entire time.
“Careful there, beautiful,” he chastises playfully as he notes your surprised expression. “Wouldn’t want you to ruin that face of yours.”
“Even If I had a bloody nose I’d still look better than half the dogs in this place,” you state with a smirk. Even when you’re intoxicated, you never miss a chance to flout your beauty.
“I think you’re right about that, doll,” the man says with a tilt of his head. His blond hair tilts with him and there is a hint of a playful nature shooting through his green eyes. You note that he’s not bad looking, he’s certainly no Jason, but he’s perfectly handsome enough for someone who would wish to settle for less.
One of the man’s hands finds itself drifting down from its position on your shoulder and is resting on the exposed part of your back as he attempts to pull your closer to his body.
“Uh-oh,” you say with a smile as an intoxicated chuckle forces its way past your lips. “My boyfriend isn’t going to like that.”
“No, he’s not,” Jason huffs through clenched teeth.
“I’m just talking to her,” the man said a little angrily, his light eyebrows furrowing as the young man approaches. “The girl is free to make her own choices, isn’t she?”
“Of course, she is, and she doesn’t like being talked about like she’s not here,” you say your own temper flaring.
“Let go of my girlfriend,” Jason says as steadily as he can. He thought that his anger was causing him to sober up, but now he’s not so sure. He can see you clearly, but there is two of the guy, and he’s not sure which one the real one is.
“Fine whatever,” the man roughly pushes you into Jason. Luckily once you crash into his solid frame the two of you don’t fall over. “If she wasn’t sharing, she shouldn’t have dressed like a slut.”
“Hey, you fucker-” you start, but it’s too late. Jason has launched himself at the man…well to the side of the man. His fist in the air, he misses the guys face by about five inches and his large body goes crashing into another patron.
“Shit!” you exclaim as you run over to check over on your fallen beau. “Jason?”
He groans slightly as he mutters an apology to the man under him and rolls to the side. He seems to be fine, and you don’t think he’s hit his head and luckily for you, your worry for him has sobered you up rather quickly.
“What a dumbass.” The flirtatious man says with a laugh. “Hey sweet cheeks, since he’s clearly not able to stand up straight, why don’t you come home with me?”
You feel a surge of anger shoot down your spine. You stand and cast a glance at the bar tender who was waiting by the phone, ready to call the police if necessary.
“Call me a cab, will you?”
The bartender nods and picks up the phone.
“I don’t appreciate being called out of my name,” you say arms crossing over your chest. “What I like even less is people laughing at my boyfriend. I think you owe the both of us an apology.”
“Both you and your pussy of a boyfriend are a pair of bitches. And I can say and laugh at whatever I want,” he says with a shrug of his shoulders. “It’s always the whores with the pretty boyfriends that think they can talk to guys anyway they want.”
“Apologize,” you demand your hands at your sides, clenched in anger.
“Make me.”
You don’t know if it’s the alcohol that’s been liberally given out because of the occasion or if the guy is that much of a jack ass, but the moment ‘me’ leaves his lips he finds it necessary to push you.
There is a switch that flicks on in your mind at the contact, and before you know it your fist is moving on its own. Your first hit lands on the peak of his nose and he’s left reeling and holding his nose in pain.
“Shit!” He cries hunched over. “You bitch.”
The continued name calling urges you to continue on and you bring your bare knee up into his face and it forces his head to fly back. The moment that your leg comes down the other comes up as you spin kick the man in his exposed stomach. He flies back into a table of some very scared customers and he lays there, wallowing in pain.
“Well this turned out to be more interesting than I thought it would be,” you mutter to yourself. Your knuckles and your knee are already throbbing in irritation and you look down to see a little bit of blood dribbling down your knee cap. “Ugh, his head was harder than I thought.”
A groan catches your ear and you turn to see your boyfriend slowly standing up. You walk up to him and place a hand on his back and swing his arm over your shoulder. “Careful, you drunk too much, babe.”
You can tell his blue eyes are taking in the scene in front of him and he’s trying to piece together what happened. “Don’t think about it too much, you’ll get a headache.”
“Uh, hello?” A voice questions. “Someone called for a cab?”
Your hand shoots up calling attention to yourself, “I did!”
The man examines your slightly disheveled form and he worriedly scratches the back of his head.
“Are you going to help me or not?” You question as you struggle to move Jason’s intoxicated form.
“Right, sorry.” The taxi driver comes to your side and helps to pull Jason out of the bar. As the two of you are walking out, you take the extra time to be petty and kick at the boot of the man you knocked out. You have to bite your lip to keep yourself from laughing when he lets out a groan.
***
It’s hours later when Jason wakes up. He can tell by the familiar softness that he’s in your shared bed. His eyes cut over to the window and sees that its’ still dark outside, meaning it’s mostly likely extremely late or early.
He groans as he sits up, his head pounding. He happens to cast a glance at the nightstand near the bed and he smiles when he sees two aspirin and a glass of water waiting for him.
“She’s the best,” he mutters as he picks up the pills.
“I know,” you say with a smirk as you walk into the room. He watches as you make your way to sit down next him, wearing one of his t-shirts. You flop down next to him and the familiar smell of your soap fills his nose, letting him know that you’ve just gotten out the shower.
“What’s this?” He questions after he’s swallowed the medicine. He’s noticed the bandages wrapped around your knee and hand.
“The fight at the bar,” you mumble. You had hoped that he wouldn’t remember.
He lets out a groan of irritation as the events replay in his mind, “I wish we just would have stayed home.”
“I wanted to have fun,” you pout.
“Does fun always have to mean showing off for other guys?” He asks bitterly.
“I thought we went over this?” You say sharply, as the playfulness is sucked from your tone. “I’ll wear what I want.”
“I don’t care what you wear,” he hisses back. “This is about what you did. Forget about that asshole calling you names, or him being just a dick, you flirted with him.”
You open your mouth to respond but he shakes his head. “I saw you, when you were sitting on my lap. I was right there and you did it anyway.”
You feel your throat tighten up in guilt and you pull at the hem of the black t-shirt, “I’m sorry it’s just sometimes I-“
“Want to make me jealous?”
“Not on purpose, no” you deny with a sly smile. “But were you?”
“Of course, I was,” he’s says with a roll of his eyes. “That first comment he made I wanted to clock him over the head. But I guess I didn’t need too.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” you say coyly. “I was defending myself, adrenalin took over.”
“Somehow, I don’t believe you,” he says with a smile as he presses a kiss to your forehead. He grabs your injured hand. Despite the bandage you’ve wrapped around it, the underside of your palm and fingers is beet red and it gives it away that your fingers are swollen and irritated. It’s most likely due to the fact that you hadn’t fought in a long time. The slight calluses that are on these fingers, however, let him know that you are used to fighting. “When are you going to tell me about what you did before you met me?”
“When it’s absolutely necessary,” you say with a shrug.
“You know everything there is to know about me,” he reasons.
“Do I?” You say rubbing your thumb against the scar on his face.
“Well, maybe not everything.”
“And I don’t need to,” you say pressing your forehead against his. “The person I love is the you I know now and you love who I am now. There is no need to put you in danger just for the sake of knowing.”
He stares at you for a moment and then relents and presses a kiss to your lips, “Alright.”
“I brought you an ice pack,” you say watching him wince and hold his head.
“Thanks,” he says as he lays back and places the pack over his eyes.
You turn off the lights and lay down next to him.
“What did you think of the red?” you ask absently after a few minutes in the darkness.
“You looked good, your skin popped and everything,” he says with a shrug.
“Really, you noticed that?”
“Yeah of course,” he says smiling as he feels your head rest on his chest. “Red is definitely your color.”
“I knew it.”

Counter Summary 1: Cass Appearances 1-100!
Welcome to my first counter summary! We have now examined exactly 100 issues of Cass Cain material, so let’s see what we have learned about her so far and what that will mean for her Arkhamverse introduction, shall we?
For starters, here are the counters sorted from highest to lowest:
Living Emoji: 59
Aphasia: 58
Fast As Lightning: 37
Little Lady Of War: 29
Batmom: 25
Batdad: 21
Fiercely Assertive Protector: 17
Creepy Bat: 16
Better Off Dead: 13
Symbolism!: 10
Ghost Of Failures Past: 10
Plight Of Permanent Perfectionism: 10
Unusual mannerisms: 9
Made Of Steel: 7
Dubious Characterization: 6
Cass Sass: 6
Ballet Battler: 1
Spells ‘Team’ With An ‘I’: 1
I have to say, I am really glad that Cass was the winner of the “next Batkid” vote, because not only is she an interesting character, but also she is mostly consistent in her characterization. Six cases of dubious characterization in 100 issues is really not so bad (especially considering that two of those issues were written by Devin Grayson). Kudos to Cass’ writers for being mostly consistent.
Unsurprisingly, the most common and consistent thing about Cassandra is her aphasia and her tendency to overcompensate for that by using her entire body language to “vocalize” her thoughts and feelings. It makes sense, since she was raised without vocal language, and even though she had her brain re-wired early on to actually understand words, I am grateful that it was not treated as a magical instant fix. It certainly made for an interesting character to read in comic form and it will make for one hell of a challenge trying to write her in prose! The No Man’s Land novel took the easy way out in that regard, but it will be a fun challenge to write someone who has no idea what any words anybody says mean. What is surprising is that her tendency to use unusual gestures to express herself pretty much dropped off after No Man’s Land, so perhaps that was just early writing weirdness.
Secondly, Cassandra has been consistently characterized as extremely fast (she can dodge bullets) and a master of combat. I do feel sorry that her “depowering” arc didn’t last longer, but at least they were smart about demonstrating that the ability to read body language mostly affects her defensive maneuvers. She does not need to read someone in order to be perfect in every martial arts form on the planet. Likewise, I loved that Cass was shown as having trouble against robotic or metahuman opponents, even though she has also managed to take hits that should really have killed her, or at the very least incapacitate her for weeks. Mostly, though, I will enjoy writing her kicking the butts of everyone in the batfam at some point, even if only in training.
Among some other character traits that have been consistent throughout her appearances so far, if less frequent than the big four, we can count Cass’ tendency to prioritize offense over defense, especially when protecting someone, coupled with an insane drive to be absolutely perfect. Both make sense, given that she was trained to be a master assassin, and means she’ll fit right in with all the hotheaded batboys of the Arkhamverse. Also, her tendency to snark at her opponents, once she has actually developed the verbal skills to do so. Definitely going to fit in well with the rest of the Arkham Batfam. :)
As for things that have changed in her characterization over time, it is great to see that Cass eventually lost her death wish, even though she still has a tendency to blame herself a lot for every single failure to save someone. I’m looking forward to seeing if this tendency will eventually wither away. Likewise, we’ll see if there’ll be more instances of her insistence to do the job herself causing trouble, or the undoubtedly cute, but so far singular, occurrence of Cass expressing herself in dance.
That leaves us with Cass’ relationships inside and outside of the Batfam, as demonstrated so far.
Throughout her appearances up until this point, there has been an interesting comparison mechanic between Cass’ real parents (spoilers about the identity of her mother ahead, if you don’t know Cass’ later storylines) and her new, “adopted” parents.
On one hand, we have Cass’ fathers: David Cain and Batman. Both have a tendency of looking at her more as a living weapon than a human being, at times. Cain raised her to be an assassin and has not seemed to realize how much he actually cared about her until he “lost” her. His response to those newly found feelings has been consistently self-destructive and it is clear in his interactions with Cassandra that she still loves him, but is unable to actually be close to him due to their irreconcilable ideological differences. Whoever had the idea of using a single crimson rose to underscore that visually was a genius, because a single crimson rose stands both for deep, unconditional love, and deep sorrow and grief. Bruce is surprisingly similar to Cain in so far as he too has trouble actually showing Cass how much he cares about her, but is fiercely protective of her. Cass, for her part, admires Batman and is grateful to him, but does not seem to look at him as new father figure yet. That’s what you get for taking on a kid who’s not an orphan yet, Bruce. This time you gotta earn your parenting cred.
On the other hand, we have Cass’ mothers: Lady Shiva and Barbara, and whereas Cass’ fathers are quite similar in how they treat her, her mothers could not be more different. Cass does not know that Shiva is her mom, and I’m not even sure if Shiva knows that Cass is her daughter. I believe she suspects it, given her dialogue during their first encounter, but I’m not sure. Either way, Shiva has not been a part of Cass’ life for seventeen years and while she has been courteous and even helpful towards Cass, she has not demonstrated any interest in getting to know “Cass the girl”, only “Cass the martial artist”. I do hope the pearls symbolism is going to come up later, because it does fit their dynamic rather well. Meanwhile, Barbara has no such troubles. She knew Cass before she became Batgirl and learned to care about the girl, not the fighter, and Cass appreciates it, even going so far as to almost tell Barb that she was like a mother to her. That is not to say that Barbara is perfect. She projects A LOT, constantly assuming that her motivations for and attitudes towards the Batgirl title are Cass’ as well and that she knows what’s best for Cass. She makes some good points, but it is a good thing that Bruce is there as a counterpart, because otherwise I’m afraid she might just smother Cass.
Last but not least, we have Cass’ relationships outside her parental figures and it is here where things get really interesting. A common theme in Cass’ interactions is that people are thoroughly creeped out by her, but eventually come to appreciate her for the kind, loyal, and fiercely protective person she really is. Tim takes the direct route and flat-out apologizes to her for his initial attitude, then offers her to be friends. Steph... never really gets over Cass’ creepiness, but is smart enough to connect with her in ways that are mutually beneficial for both of them (Steph gets some training, Cass gets some fun and socialization). And Nightwing... well, Dick broke my heart with just how quickly he accepted her and genuinely cared for Cass, despite having all of maybe two or three interactions with her. It seems like a repeating pattern for his comics character (caring deeply about his family, but not really having that much time to spend with them) and I look forward to writing a more involved version of him in Cass’ Arkhamverse stories.
Outside of the batfam, we have seen three notable interactions so far: Azrael, who had a crush on Cass that did not end happily, Superboy, who also seemed to have had a crush on Cass that was sort of left unresolved, and Leslie Thompkins, whom Cass greatly admired for her inner strength and her unbelievable compassion. I have to admit I won’t be sad if I never see Superboy or Azrael interact with her again, since I couldn’t bring myself to care about either of those two, but I do hope we get to see Leslie and Cass interact again in the future. If there is any way I can include her in Cass’ introduction into Arkhamverse (I don’t want it to be a mere re-hash of No Man’s Land), I will do so.
Last but not least, I’m kind of sad that we haven’t really seen her interact with Alfred all that much yet. I’m gonna have to fix that.

Dick Grayson/ Gryffindor
Oh boyy…
He thinks he’s smooth when playing quidditch.
He isn’t
“look at me, (y/n)!! I got the snitch!!”
“Nice, dick” You said while Reading a book.
“Im cool right!?”
“Sure”
You two are friend since the first day of first year
He helped you up in the boat.
Since then he followed you around, happy and bubbly.
Flirting.
Oh so much flirting.
You’re obvious to it.
He sits with you in your table since first year.
Your housemates welcome him as one of them now
Because he’s always there
He teaches you to fly.
He always takes you out to Hogsmeade.
His first snitch rests in your bedside table.
You like him, too.
He’s a little protective.
You want to enter in the triwizard tournament?
No way.
You want to join Harry potter?
“(Y/n) Think about it!! Its dangerous?!”
“Well, you joined him!”
“Its different!”
“How so?!”
“Because I love you!! I’m scared I will lose you!”
You kiss him hard
He grabs you by your hips.
“Me too” you smile
You are head girl in your last year.
Dick is so proud!
Then he is also named Head boy.
He’s ecstatic now.
He and you now live together!!
After your last year you two are still together.
When the second magic war hit it’s peak you and him joined the fight
You two always fought together, shoulder on shoulder.
You were once grabbed by a deatheater.
“Well, isn’t this just precious? The bat’s boy tries to fight me…. well I’m so underwhelmed…” The man sneered.
“You are underwhelmed, Voldemort is overwhelmed…why is anyone just whelmed??!”
“DICK JUST KNOCK HIM DOWN!!” You yelled at him.
“oh, right. Stupefy!”
After Harry Potter won, you and the Waynes helped to bring back the magic world.
After the war
He studied to become an auror.
You studied to be (Y/P).
You got married and two had a beautiful girl.
Her first magic was smash her dad to the wall because she laughed at his jokes.
Dick was so proud!
You kissed her chubby cheeks and she laughed more.
His bogart is losing you like his parents did.
His patronus is a robin.
In the mirror or Erised he always has seen since first year, his parents, you, Bruce and his siblings all happy and around him.
Jason Todd/ Gryffindor
Jason often isolated himself from his housemates.
You meet him in the stairs, after you got lost on your first year.
You approached the lion and talked to him.
He tried to push you away, but you kept coming back
“What the hell do you want?!!?” he yelled
“I wanna be you friend!”
In the end you were inseparable.
Wherever you went he follow (sometimes you dragged him there)
Most of the time you two are outside studying or in the library.
You joined your quidditch team in your 2 year.
You agility and velocity make you a wonderful seeker.
Jason sat in your training waiting for you.
The first snitch you caught you gave it to him, he put a charm to make it a bit littler and put a chain on it. He wore it under his shirt since that day on.
In the triwizard tournament, he took you to the dance.
After hours of dancing he took you outside, under the moonlight and by the lagoon.
He tried to confess, but he was bad with words.
“listen, (y/n)…i…I kinda…um, shit I….”
“I know” You smiled at him and kissed him sweetly.
You had your ups and downs, but no one could say you two weren’t perfect for each other.
Jay always took you to Hogsmeade, where you two meet Roy and Kori, who later became your best friends.
When the war hit on, you joined Jay, Roy and Kori in the Outlaws. A group that killed deatheaters.
His dad was against killing, but Jay knew it was the only solution.
After the war ended, his dad turned his back on him.
That hurt Jason deeply, and so he angrily leaved, you followed him.
Both of you live now on America, where he works in the muggle world as secret agents for the wizard community.
One day his brothers came to bring you two back.
Jason said no. But his younger brother Tim threw him a photography and suddenly you were in Wayne Manor.
“What the hell?!” Jason screamed.
“Jason…we need to talk.” Bruce Wayne said. Jason tried to get away but you held him back, and looked pleadingly to his eyes.
He sighed and entered the manor.
Bruce apologized for turning his back to him and asked him to come back.
Jason sneered and said no.
With time, he forgives him and he would come once in a while with you to the manor.
You lived with Jay in an apartment in America with Roy and Kori came in every day.
4 years later you had a beautiful boy.
Roy and Kori spoiled him rotten.
When he was 3 you bought him to Wayne Manor.
Bruce eyes shined with proudness
Your little bird’s first magic was smashing his uncle Dick for upsetting his daddy.
Jason was so proud! He laughed so hard and made your boy smash dick on and on while laughing with his daddy.
You had to stop them since dick had started feeling lightheaded.
His bogart first was his mom’s corpse, then after meeting you it was you leaving him. He also feared clowns.
His Patronus was a Lioness
He first saw his mom with him in the mirror of Erised. After meeting you he saw you two holding hands, with his mom holding his shoulder and Bruce and his siblings looking at him proudly.
Tim Drake/ Ravenclaw
He first saw you on the lagoon playing with your friends.
He liked you but was shy to approach you.
You asked him to tutor you on runes, as it was a subject you needed help on.
He blushed and agreed to meet you after class on the library.
You two sat closely as he helped you on your assignment.
Tim pined for you for a long time, and his friends were sick of seeing him like that.
“Bart what the hell is that?!”
“it’s Amortentia!! She’ll love you then!”
“And if nothing changes she already loves you!”
“KON??? YOU APROVE THIS?!”
“I approve whatever makes you stop looking like a kicked puppy when you see her.”
“Besides, Your brother gave it to us.”
“DICK?!”
“Nah, Jason,”
“….” Tim grabbed the vial with the potion to shup his friends up.
When the triwizard dance came, Tim got the courage to ask you.
But was late, as Malfoy had asked you first.
You accepted as he had warned you about what consequences your rejection would bring.
That ferret!.
Tim brooded like the bat he is for a few days.
Until your best friend approached him and told him everything.
And I mean EVERYTHING
After you danced with Malfoy for a while, Tim dragged you away from him.
“Timmy? What’s the deal??”
“I’m sick, (y/n)…I’m sick of this.”
“Tim what?”
He kissed you harshly, you held him closed and kissed back.
“I love you, (y/n)…” Tim’s head leaned on yours, forehead on forehead.
“I love you too, Timmy…” You smiled and Tim smiled back, kissing you sweetly.
Tim and you danced outside all night long, sharing kisses and sweet words.
Leaving a brokenhearted Platinum blonde.
Tim took you to Hogsmade from now on, it was the day you two could be more loving with each other’s.
The Malfoy group started bullying the two of you.
But they did it when his brother couldn’t see.
The war hit on you and Tim where in 6 year.
Tim joined the fight and tried to get you to safety.
But you were held hostage in Malfoy Manor, as the dark lord needed your family’s money.
Tim, kon and Bart entered the manor to get you but where captured too.
They asked the Waynes to join them or Tim and his friends would die.
But Bruce wouldn’t cooperate.
Draco saw you crying everyday hugging your knees closer to your chest and feelt his heart clenching too.
He may hate Drake…but….but he couldn’t see you unhappy anymore.
If you weren’t happy with him…
He entered your cell and shushed you, bailed you out and returned your wand.
“And..and tim?” You asked, he sighed and led you to tim cell, letting him and his frieds go.
He lead you to the weakest part of the barrier guarding Malfoy manor for you to scape.
“Thank you Malfoy.” Tim nodded at the boy.
“Draco, come with us…please” You asked the blonde. “We can help you and your mother..”
“I can’t (l/n)…i…apologize for my actions…”
You smiled at him and kissed his cheek.
“Everything is forgiven” You smiled and he smirked back.
“Knock me out, will you. I don’t wanna look like a traitor right now.”
Tim smirked and hit him with a powerful Stupefy.
“Timmy, not that hard!”
“He had it coming”
After the war ended you and Tim returned to Hogwarts to end the two years.
Tim and you stayed together since then, having the war brought you closer together.
Tim ended working as head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.
You ended being an (f/p)
After being together for years you two got married and had a beautiful boy.
Your relationship with the Malfoys got better with the years.
Your baby and theirs used to plays with each other as babies.
Tim still got jealous of the yearning looks Malfoy send you”
After each visit to Malfoy Manor Tim claimed and made love to you all over again.
Your baby’s first accidental magic was moving his favorited books out of the shelves and to his baby hands.
You were so proud!
Tim and you kissed your boy’s cheeks, making him laugh cutely.
His patronus is an owl.
His bogart first was losing his parents and after meeting you, was you being tortured to death.
In the mirror of Erised, he first saw his family happily and proud of him and after meeting you was seeing you hugging him.
Damian Wayne/ Slytherin
Boi.
Damian was the prince of Slytherin.
Malfoy be dammned.
He was approached by lots of people for his noble status as an Al Ghul and his pureblood status as a Wayne.
He doesn’t care of that.
He meet you on your first potion class.
He was paired with you for all year.
Your relationship with you wasn’t the best at first.
“Well, (l/n) I’m not doing all the work for you!”
“What?! If I’ve been doing everything! You just grabbed the ingredients!!”
“(L/N) ,WAYNE!”
“Sorry professor.”
“I hate you” You mumbled
“feelings mutual” Damian grumbled.
But with the months he learned to tolerate you.
He “befriended” a Gryffindor by the name of Jon Kent.
Jon and you knew each other’s since the first day
He kinda…liked you.
“Isn’t she beautiful?”
“who? Granger?”
“No, the girl next to her” Jon sighed.
“(l/n)?!”
“Yeah….you think she will go with me to Hogsmade?”
“NO!” Damian yelled, scaring you away.
“Why?”
“She-she’s just….no.”
“Damian you like her?”
“what no!”
“Then I’ll ask her now! Wish me luck!” Jon ran to you and called your name.
He saw you smiling at Kent and going back inside again.
“…” Damian piercing glare followed you back to the castle a bad feeling set in the pit of his stomach.
The next day he saw Jon eating with you in your house’s table.
“Tt” Damian grabbed an apple and bit it harshly.
Back in potion class he decided to ask you
“So, you and Kent, eh?” Damian smiled menacingly
“Yes.”
“You’re a thing now?”
“What if we are?” You glared at him. “Jealous?” You smirked.
“….No!”
“WAYNE!”
“Sorry professor…”
Years passed and as Damian grew, so did his feelings for you.
But your tender innocence was broken by the war.
You had to stay in the castle as you couldn’t return back home.
One night, you where tiptoeing to the kitchen when you saw Damian leaving the castle.
And after thinking it thought you ran behind him.
“WAYNE WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING!” You grabbed him by the arm
“Im going with father to war”
“But you’re a kid!”
“I was trained for this moment!” Damian freed from your hold. “Go back to your dorm, (l/n).”
“NO! YOU COULD DIE!” You followed him, and he sick of your yells, pined you to the wall and kissed you desperately. “mph” You soon closed your eyes and kissed back.
“And Kent?” Damian sighed in your lips.
“We are just friends…” You kissed him again, your hands grabbing his short hair and his hugged your waist.
“Good. Now you’re mine.” He kissed you again, shielded by the darkness. “Go back to your dorm, (l/n) I want you out of trouble. At least until I can be the cause of them “He smirked.
He kissed you again and gave you his family crest, as he said “so you don’t forget who has your heart”
During the attack to Hogwarts Damian ran to find you, worried sick.
When he found you he kissed you long and hard. Stealing your breath.
“Wayne you’re alive!” you hugged him.
“Obviously.” He smirked.
He and you made your way out of the castle to witness the end of war.
You hugged him, and he kissed your tears of relief.
After war, you were invited to stay in Wayne Manor as long as it was necessary.
The boys loved you, as you were capable of putting Damian in his place.
They loved the nickname you had for him
“Oh please, shut it you little fuzzball of hate!”
“OMG WHAT DID (Y/N) CALL HIM?!”
“WHAT DID YOU CALL ME?!”
Hilarious
After war, you two returned to Hogwarts to end your studies.
Your relationship grew stronger with the years, until after 3 years after graduating you two married.
He began auror training and became one of the best and you started working on (f/p).
4 years after marriage you two had a wonderful girl.
A total daddy’s girl tbh
Her first magical accident was making her great-grandfather’s sword follow Tim around.
“WAYNE STOP HER! SHE WILL HURT HIM!”
“Nah, Wayne. Let her, she’s a total warrior.” Damian smirked proudly as his arm held your waist.
“You love calling me that, don’t you” you smirked as your husband kissed you.
“Indeed. “He smirked as he kissed you passionately.
“CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!?????” Tim screamed as he ran away of your 4-year-old daughter.
His Patronus is a Tiger.
His bogart was being abandoned by everyone.
He first saw in the mirror of Erised, his mother and father standing with him proudly. But after a while he saw you, his brothers and his father there with him.
Barbara Gordon/ Ravenclaw
You meet Barbara thanks to your klutziness.
You bumped into her and threw her books to the ground.
“Oh my god im so sorry!” You crouched down and helped her get her books back.
“No worries” She smiled at you and you felt your cheeks grow warm.
“Can I do anything for you??”
“You take me out to Hogsmeade this weekend.” She winked at you.
“I-okay” You blushed as you put your (skirt/pants) back in place.
“It’s a date” She winked and she went on her merry way, leaving a flustered (y/n).
The Saturday came, and you got dressed prettily and saw her waiting for you outside.
“Ready (y/n)?” She smirked.
“Ready”
You two grew closer over the years. She introduced you to his father, famous auror James Gordon. And to his pseudo family The Waynes.
Some people didn’t saw your relationship as normal
But you two couldn’t care less.
She and you would hang outside, reading together.
And both of you were quidditch players.
When your houses played against each other’s, she grabbed you before going out and kissed you hard.
Your housemates whistled and clapped at you two.
On your last year she was named Head girl.
Sadly you (weren’t/couldn’t be) named Head boy.
After graduating as one of the smartest witches of her age, she started working for the ministry. Her name resonated everywhere in England.
“Oh, miss Oracle please be soft..im tender” You smirked as you visited your girlfriend.
“(n/n) I thought you were at (f/p)!”
“I came to see you, missed you.”
“Aw” She kissed you. “Now, shoo! I got work! And you do too!
“I’m hurt!” you smirked.
“No you’re not!”
Your happiness was broken when the war started.
Babs started working for the order as the ministry had been taken over.
You joined too, and helped them on the battleground.
After war, you and Babs decided you wanted children.
So you (had/adopted) twins.
“Double trouble!” Would Dick sing to them.
And indeed they where a handful.
“BABS (y/n)!! PLEASE!!! “Dick yelled as your twins followed him around.
They liked him a lot.
In the end they had their first magic accident
“PUPPY!!!!”
Yep
Dick was a puppy.
“OMG!!” You and Babs started laughing hard.
“woof woof!”
Her Patronus is Bat.
Her bogart was seeing his dad dead, and after meeting you it was everyone she loves dead.
She first saw in the mirror of Erised her mother and her father together. And after meeting you, you joined her happy family.
Stephanie Brown/ Huffelpuf
You and Stephanie meet in a blind date your mutual friend Cassandra set.
You two hit it off instantly.
She and you would come to your table and sit to eat with you.
You two and Cass would hang out together.
You went to Hogsmeade together
One day, Cass smiled at you two and let you two alone.
“What’s wrong with Cass??” you asked.
“um…(y/n) can we…can we talk...?”
“Of course.”
Steph and you went close to the Shrieking Shack
Steph didn’t look at you in the eyes.
“What’s wrong, Steph?”
“(Y/N)…I-i…kinda, like you?”
“Me too.” You smiled at her and she tackled you with a kiss.
You two started dating, the sight of you eating in the Hufflepuff table was normal.
She introduced you to her friend/ex’s a Ravenclaw by the name of Tim Drake.
You two were good friends.
War interrupted your school year.
Steph and you escaped the school to join her family in the battlefield.
She got hurt badly, and you nursed her back to health.
But before the war ended you got hit with a hard crucio and fell in a coma.
Steph stayed by your side every day at St Mungo.
Until 6 months after you woke up.
“..s…steph?” You asked.
“(y/n)!!” she hugged you hard and kissed you softly.
Months after that, you two started living together in a little apartment in muggle London.
You and her happily lived out of the magical community, with the often visit of your friends and family.
She worked as a kindergarten teacher and you as a (f/p).
As you two loved kids you decided to (have / adopt) a little girl.
She was the light of the house.
You both loved to play with her.
And often bought her to Wayne manor and Diagon Alley.
Her first magical accident was turning Steph’s hair blue and your skin pink.
Steph’s Patronus is a fox
Her bogart is failing.
She first saw in the mirror of Erised she and the Waynes looking proudly at her. But after meeting you was you, holding her hand while Cass and Tim smile happy at her.
Cassandra Cain/ Slytherin
You meet Cassandra in your first year.
She was one year older than you.
When some Slytherin were bothering you, Cass helped you.
She pushed the bullies away from you.
Soon, you two were inseparable.
Your smile brought fluttering bats to her tummy.
She introduced you to two of her friends, Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown.
They were happy Cass had found someone that made her smile more often.
She brought you as her date for a ball Wayne manor was holding.
She introduced you to her family.
They liked you a lot already.
Alfred smiled knowingly as he and Bruce saw Cass leading you to the enchanted garden.
“Cass, what’s wrong?” You asked as Cass made you sit.
“…” she looked at you in the eyes and pointed to her heart and then to you.
“…oh” You smiled at Cass and did the same. “I like you to, Cass”
She smiled and kissed you.
Back at Hogwarts everyone noticed the change around you two.
No one dared to say anything to you two.
When Cass ended her last year, she started working as an Auror with her brothers.
Then the war broke.
And you two were separated.
You on Hogwarts and she at the ministry.
She was worried sick for you.
When the attack at Hogwarts begun she quickly moved there with her squad.
She found you between the students in the infirmary.
She kissed your forehead and you waked up, and looked at her smiling.
She found the Deatheater than did it and battled him, positively winning.
After war ended she mover your recovering body to Wayne manor, so Alfred could heal you. When the new year begun, you moved to Hogwarts for your last year.
You two lived there for 3 more years before moving to a house in magical London.
After 3 years you two adopted a little puppy, called (y/d/n) and you discussed of having children together.
Her Patronus is a Lynx.
Her bogart is being alone again, and her “mother” killing everyone she holds dear.
She first saw in the mirror, herself and her whole family happy, and soon your image joined them, next to her and holding her hand.
Duke Thomas/ Gryffindor
You meet Duke on your second year.
When you two played in your first Quidditch tournament.
Duke and you feel a spark when he saw your piercing glare that he returned.
He approached you the day after, intrigued by you.
You two started a friendly rivalry.
He and you would hang out most of the times, and when you didn’t you two seek each other with your eyes.
When the dance came, Duke didn’t know if you would say yes to him.
After almost losing you to the asshole of Mclaggen, he quickly ran to you and kissed you in front of him.
“Duke, what?” You asked, out of breath.
“go to the dance with me?” He smiled
“you ass, of course!” you smiled and hugged him.
“great!” he sighed in relief.
When the dance came, you and duke danced all night.
You and Duke started a relationship that night.
He bought you to Wayne manor after his brothers bothered him to.
“Please, don’t get scared by them…”
“they can’t be that bad” you smiled.
Oh, how wrong you were.
After the craziness that ensued Duke was scared you were going to leave him.
“I’m not leaving you for that, Duke.” You kissed him softly.
When the war began, Duke organized a group of students that he and his brother trained to fight.
You joined him and together defended Hogwarts the best you could.
When Voldemort died you and Duke hugged hard, seeking comfort together.
After Hogwarts was restored you and Duke returned to finish your last years.
After your eight year, Duke joined the aurors and you (f/p).
When Duke and you had enough money, you two bought an apartment and moved there.
Duke also introduced you to his muggle friends, from before he was adopted.
You clicked it off nicely.
After a few years you two got married and had a beautiful boy.
His first magical accident was flying you around the room, with Duke following you around so you didn’t fall to the ground.
His Patronus is a wolf
His bogart is the talon.
He first saw his friends and old family in the mirror of Erised, and when he meet you your image joined them, hugging him from behind.
Bruce Wayne/ Slytherin/Head Auror.
You and Bruce meet at Hogwarts express on your first day.
You saw the alone boy and sit next to him, offering him some sweets.
He rejected them.
But he helped you on his boat to Hogwarts.
He was sorted on Slytherin and you on (h/h)
You two still hanged out together.
The brooding Slytherin that hanged out with the happy (h/h)
He got his nickname of Batman, because he hardly sleeps and because he feared them.
He asked you out finally on your sixth year and you two officially started a relationship.
Nobody was surprised.
Not even you
After graduating he started in the Aurors and you started in (f/p)
He quickly stood out in the academy.
And soon became the head of the department.
Then, one day you two would go to see a magical circus that came to the city.
There you meet your first son, Dick Grayson-Wayne.
Bruce saw himself in the boy, and you quickly grew to love him.
When you send him to Hogwarts you missed him heavily.
Bruce noticed, and you tried to have one of your own and soon you had baby Damian.
Dick adored his little baby brother.
But one day, Bruce came home with a dirty short kid.
Jason Peter Todd was his name.
You smiled at Jason warmly and Alfred prepared a bath for him, you waited for him and cured his wounds with magic.
Jason grew to love it there, with you and Bruce. Dick and him at first didn’t get along but wit time they started liking each other.
The next year Jay started school with Dick and you only had Damian.
Bruce was very occupied with his work.
It wasn’t until a year after than the Drakes were attacked at their own home, leaving poor Timothy orphaned.
You were a friend of his mother, she was a housemate of yours at Hogwarts, you took Tim under your wing as he already knew you he clutched to you for dear life.
Tim Drake soon became a Wayne too, and the year he joined his brothers at Hogwarts Harry Potter had joined too.
Soon came Cassandra and Stephanie, the two girls would brighten your day and you were really upset when the two of the had to join their siblings.
Then you meet eleven year old Duke, who you suggested Bruce to adopt him.
When only Damian was at the house you saw him try to train as his father did, and when you asked why he answered “It’s for war, mom. I’ll protect you”
A few years after, your little boy was eleven. He dragged both of you and his older brothers to see his big day.
You kissed his forehead, proud of your baby.
You saw how his eyes followed a petite (h/c) and you smiled knowingly to your husband.
You said good bye to your boys and the oldest and your husband returned home.
When the war broke down, you hardly saw Bruce at all.
He had joined the order and was fighting for what was right
You joined the front with your oldest sons, too. Helping save the magic world.
When Voldemort was defeated you ran to your husband side and kissed him.
He hugged you hard and your sons soon joined the hug.
You had a family reunion, your sons, your daughters and their girlfriends/boyfriends.
As you helped Alfred set the table up, you saw your child getting along, teasing and playin.
You felt you husband kiss your neck and hug your waist
“do we tell them?”
“yes”
As everyone was eating you and Bruce got up and called for attention.
“Boys! Girls! We had good news to tell.”
“I’m pregnant!” you smiled.
Everyone was over joyed as they hug you and congratulated you.
You were glad you married the Bat, the head auror.
You lived happy with your boys and girls.
“Who are you going to call them.” Steph asked
“Terry” you smiled.
Bruce Patronus is a (f/a)
His bogart are a lot of bats coming out of the corpses of his parents and your own corpse.
As a kid, he saw his parents with him in the mirror of Erised, after falling in love with you he saw you and him forming a family and his parents images smiling proudly.
After having his kids the only thing, he sees in the mirror is himself, as he has everything he wanted.

Most of this stuff is old. Some of it is new. All of it is embarrassing.
DC Universe:
DCEU: Justice League: Taboo: Bruce attempts to recruit a new member to the League
Barry Allen/ The Flash: He’s Fast, She’s Weird: Bruce Wayne meets a new candidate for the team while attempting to recruit Barry.
Batman Universe: Batfam: Last Name: Bruce takes in another child. She is reluctant to stay, but once she meets the Batboys, it’s hard for her to say no.
Richard “Dick” Grayson/Nightwing: Scarlet Shadow: Upon arrival at a crime scene, Nightwing finds the criminals taken care of and an injured vigilante.
Buddy and Ummi: (Series: In Progress) The reader becomes an even bigger part of her boyfriend’s family than she first expected.
Jason Todd/Red Hood: Really, Red?: After saving the reader from one of Joker’s kidnapping attempts, Red Hood makes a really stupid comment.
Power: On a mission with the reader, Jason realizes he may be the man, but she has the power.
Tim Drake/Red Robin: A Comforting Hug: The reader’s emotionally abusive father returns, and her mom doesn’t realize how much damage having him there is doing to her and her family. She leaves her house and Tim helps comfort her. (This is really just ranty because my dad came back in town and makes me want to jump off a bridge…)
Exactly: The Team (Young Justice) ditches training without telling you or Tim in an attempt to finally push you two together.
Damian Wayne/Robin: Buddy and Ummi: (Series: Discontinued) The reader becomes an important figure in the youngest Wayne’s life, even if it didn’t start that way.
Young Justice: The Team: Blood is Thicker Than Water: The Joker’s daughter runs away from her abusive father and meets Batman. She becomes the newest addition to the team, and proves her true allegiance when they face the Injustice League.
Robin (Tim Drake): Exactly: The Team ditches training without telling you or Tim in an attempt to finally push you two together.
Marvel Universe:
MCU: Peter Parker/Spider-Man: The Girl Who Cried Fanfic: An avid superhero fan is a bit too obnoxious when reading fanfictions. One night her cheers are ignored, brushed off as if they were normal, and the only one to save her is the hero she had been reading about.
Actors:
Tom Holland: Different: Upon meeting Tom Holland at Comic-Con, the reader realizes that actors are people too.
Harry Potter:
Marauders’ Era: Marauders Birthday Headcanons: Some birthday headcanons I wrote for the Marauders on my 15th birthday (in 2015 so cut me some slack) (I’m sure I have some other HP headcanons on my blog but these were the only ones I could find bc they were so long ago…)
Stranger Things:
The Party: Loved: The whole party makes sure that the reader knows they’re loved and important. (Maybe a little bit of Steve x Reader)
Steve Harrington: Cheerleader: Steve asks the reader out after a successful basketball game, but he needed some help first.
Naruto:
Kiba Inuzuka: An Unlikely Pair: 1 2 3 Kiba secretly likes the reader, which isn’t great because they can’t stand him and definitely do not like him back. No seriously guys there’s definitely no way the reader likes him back that’s absurd.

Wednesday Roundup
We have a new addition to the party this week! Ghostbusters 101 -- and I’m very excited to see where all our continuing stories lead us. So let’s look into ‘em without further ado...
DC’s Batman Beyond, DC’s Detective Comics, IDW’s Ghostbusters 101, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, DC’s Wonder Woman
DC’s Batman Beyond (2016-present) #6 Dan Jurgens, Bernard Chang, Marcelo Maiolo
Well, I will give this comic one thing: it truly understands what attracts fans like me to Batman Beyond as a franchise to begin with: everyone giving Bruce crap for his stupid, stupid ideas and the consequences he doesn’t think out all of the way in canon. And Matt and Max are easily the best parts of each issue for that reason. That and Max’s undercut. The best things.
Alright, so I was completely accurate in my assumption last issue that the fact that every batboy in the franchise got a shoutout because it’s going to turn out that Damian has now been brought into the fold of the Beyond universe. And it’s probably going to have something to do either with the AI of the new Batsuit or with the plot from the DCAU where Ra’s takes over a younger descendent’s body in order to regain his own youth -- formerly it was Talia, now it is logically Damian.
mkay.
It still makes me angry that we don’t get shoutouts to Kate, Cass, Steph, Harper -- literally any woman in the franchise while the boys get every solitary universe but whatever.
Not really whatever, but I am willing to grant that the comic is still young and there’s an opportunity that as ‘Tec works to make the extended Batfamily’s stars rise, that they will receive some due credit in the Beyond timeline as well. Batgirls: Futures End anyone? Just food for thought.
Anyway. This was an enjoyable issue, but a rather quick read compared to everything else this week. Most, if not all, of the meat was put into that last page reveal because of course it was. But here’s hoping the pace picks up next issue now that everything’s out of the way.
DC’s Detective Comics (2016-present) #957 James Tynion IV, Christopher Sebela, Carmen Carnero, Karl Story
A one-shot issue? A complete story that focuses on character development and world building with previous setup being paid off and future setup being presented? Are we sure this is the Detective Comics run I’ve criticized for its pacing and drawn out stories for the past year? Are we sure this isn’t a bizarro world issue I got a hand on somehow?
Okay, all joking aside, I have been harsh on this run in the past but I think this issue proves pretty much everything I have critiqued before because Tynion, with help from Sebela, focuses on his strengths -- character, voice, simple storytelling devices, and presenting a critical opinion of the genre while also very much showing a love for it.
This is honestly why I have been baffled by people who have said they hated Tynion’s characterization of Steph in this run. I didn’t like how he wrote her in Batman and Robin Eternal, but almost everything in this issue embodies the parts of Steph I have loved about her character over the years. Striding the line between insider and outsider, loving and protecting Gotham while questioning and being critical of the harm Batman’s crusade has don, not wanting glory but still wanting to be be better and to help. She’s confident, she’s resourceful and clever, and yet there is a loneliness and sacrifice to how she’s chosen her path. And even if she doesn’t mention it directly, because we’ve followed Steph as she got to this point we know there’s still a question about how she’s affording her equipment, where she’s living, who she’s in contact with, whether or not she’s going to school.
This issue gave me so many feelings and it really does reward me for having confidence in the creative team seeming to have a plan and direction for Steph as a character. Something, I should note, I don’t always feel the most confidence with when it comes to this run thus far.
More comics like this, Tynion. I’m begging you.
IDW’s Ghostbusters 101 (2017-present) #3 Erik Burnham, Dan Shoening, Luis Antonio Delgado
On the basis of my three-issue policy, I am happy to say that I am as excited as I can be on the direction of IDW’s Ghostbusters 101. The quality of the Ghostbusters franchise as it’s been handled by IDW for over a decade now has always been among the top tier of comics and probably one of the more under appreciated productions of the medium. I mean, I read them but how many of you read them?
Erik Burnham has become the defining crafter of what I consider “my” Ghostbusters as it comes to the original cast, and I have been very excited to see how he and Dan Shoening translated the recent 2016 cast into the multiverse and into their distinct styles of writing. And I’m more than happy to say that it translates beautifully.
The team ups we’ve all been waiting for since the very first announcements of the rebooted movie has finally come...
And by that I mean that, finally, in the third issue, after two issues of buildup, we finally have some interactions between the Original Crew, the Real Crew, the EXTREME Crew, and now the Answer the Call Crew.
... See, one of the barriers for entry into these comics is you kind of have to accept that almost all the comics are written with the Big Picture in mind. Erik Burnham has always been a slow burn of a writer, and that was very much evidenced not only with my favorite of his Ghostbusters runs -- the Ghostbusters (2013-2014) run -- but especially in the IDW crossover of Ghostbusters/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He takes his time, and the buildup will have payoff, but it might be a bit slow to wait issue-by-issue for for some fans who want the immediate excitement of the characters interacting.
I mean, I’m a fan and I waited until I could read all three of the first issues together, if that tells you anything.
It is a joy, and worth picking up for fans. Just be aware of your tastes before judging too hard.
Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2015-present) #19 Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, Tamra Bonvillain
If you care about the future of the medium and about comics attracting younger fans, or just having goo wholesome comics for all ages, I have no idea why you aren’t already reading Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur because it is just one of the prettiest, most inventive, and most genuine all-ages books that I’ve read in a long time.
Lunella and Devil have become such an iconic pair, and the beauty of this comic is how the effort and storytelling are treated with the authenticity and effort of “adult” aimed readers, including having Lunella’s point of view be prominent but obviously still marked by immaturity and lack of experience, while still very much at its heart being the story of a child in a world of superheroes, growing and learning and becoming herself even when she doesn’t necessarily know what that means.
The at is gorgeous, specifically the coloring of this issue is just jaw dropping, and getting Lunella into space and having her so attached to Devil to bring him along in a ridiculous but wonderful dinosaur-sized space suit is just amazing.
I love everything here in this comic and really hope those of you with kids in your lives or just the love of good superhero comics with unique tones and stories are picking this up already.
DC’s Wonder Woman (2016-present) #23 Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp, HI-FI
We’re coming to the end of Rucka’s amazing run and I’m just very grateful at the moment. I’m grateful to this run and I’m grateful that the Present Day stuff finally actually caught up in quality with the Past storylines because man it was super shaky for a while there. And it really took the whole picture unifying for it to really work for me and that’s probably going to mean that on re-read, at least for me, the parts I have been critical about when it comes to this run will read better.
...
Okay the racism won’t read better. Seriously, what was the point?
But Diana won with love. Veronica will still have a reason to be antagonistic with Wondy even though she saved her daughter. Diana and Hippolyta met each other again for at least momentarily. There were so many good things -- especially good conversations. Liam Sharp’s art was pretty top notch.
Just overall this was a good Beginning of the End, so to speak, and I’m really looking forward to where we go from here.
So the books this week were very different in tone and story overall, but it has to be said, with the maybe exception of Batman Beyond which still had a pretty prominent female characters feature, this week is really the week of Superheroines. And I love that. I love that we’re at a time and place in comics where women and girls are allowed to be so many varieties of characters and still heroic, still masters of their own stories, and still geared toward so many different tastes and audiences.
It really shows, at least for me, what’s going right with the industry at the moment, and I hope it progresses that way.
But it’s time for the pick of the week, and as much as I really enjoyed all the comics this week, I’m going to give this week’s pick to Detective Comics. It was a great stand alone, it was very focused and character driven, and it’s just so wonderful seeing Stephanie’s independence and more individualized view of justice getting to be front and center of a ‘Tec comic. The times where she was treated with this amount of respect as Spoiler were few and far between in the previous continuity and it’s good as a fan to see that the current creative team can love and appreciate the 2000s comics and draw from them while still adjusting and moving past their flaws.
But that’s just my opinion on today’s pull! Do you guys agree or disagree with me on any of them? Think I missed picking up something great? I’d love to hear from you! See you next week <3

CAMPING | First Look at Outwell, Robens & Easy Camp 2018 Camping Range
Back in September, I was invited to join a small group of journalists to visit Outwell head office over in Denmark, giving us the chance to see some highlights from the new 2018 camping range for not only Outwell, but Robens and Easy Camp too.
Touring their showroom, I felt like a child in a sweet shop! With so many funky products and clever new designs vying for attention there was an awful lot to take in, but getting to talk to members of the Outwell, Robens and Easy Camp teams was a big help.
We also got to talk to some of the product designers and ask as many questions as we wanted, which porivded us with a superb level of insight into the new 2018 range.
Launched today, I’m super excited to finally be able to reveal some of our top picks for 2018 below.
Easy Camp 2018 Highlights
Aimed at budget concious campers, young families and festival goers, Easy Camp have several vast new ranges for 2018. The range the most grabbed my attention has to be the new Bohemian festival range. There are two different patterns, both of which are absolutely stunning!
Carnival Festival Range
Festival campers will love the new Bohemian designs in the 2018 Carnival tent range consiting of coordinating tents and accessories. The focus is on simple tents that are quick and easy to put up, with prints designed to help campers stand out. The new tents feature taped seams and are so pretty the hope is they will be used time and time again and not left behind at the festival like so many people seem to do these days!

The Easy Camp range is using this vibrant teal colour across it’s range which is one of my favourite colours and I thought furniture like the new Pampas folding camp bed (below) looks fabulous.

Adventure Accessories
For those wishing to explore the outdoors without spending a small fortune, the adventure accessories range from Easy Camp includes everything you’ll need for your camping trip. From compact kettles and to space saving lanterns, and even some very funky illuminated tent pegs.

The new Sacramento backpacks from Easy Camp RRP £37.99.
Robens 2018 Highlights
Robens tents and camping accessories provide the ultimate in camping innovation, with expedition tents and sleeping bags built to withstand the harshest elements, a family camping range designed to be as sturdy, yet portable as possible and a superb bushcraft range. I fell in love with so many Robens tents and accessories It’s hard to choose just a few highlights!

Is it a bell tent or is it a regular tent? I love this funky little hybrid tent that looks like a regular modern tent at the front, but has the rear end of a dinky little bell tent. How cool is that? It’s fast to pitch, is made from HydroTex Polycotton and sleeps up to 4 people.
Trapper Tent RPP £749.99.

The new Robens Trekker L Camp Table RRP £114.99.

Back for 2018, the Robens Cabin 600 tent was one of my favourite tents. Superb quality throughout and a brilliant technical spec including a 5000 mm hydrostatic head and a black-out ceiling.
Robens Cabin 600 tent RRP £799.99.
Crevasse Sleeping Bag
Availabele in two different sizes, I loved the design of the new Robens Cravasse sleeping bags. With an innovate zip style, the foot box also unzips; indeal for warmer weater and the mummy-like design of the bag means it will keep you warm in chilly weather, but without being too restrictive.

The bushcraft from Robens includes everything you need to fend for yourself in the great outdoors. From sturdy cast iron pans to wood burning stoves, the range is packed full of stunning quality outdoors and camping equipment.
Outwell 2018 Highlights
The new outwell range for 2018 is so vast, I’m not even going to try to cover what’s new. Outwell Collaps Range
If you’ve not familiar with the Outwell Collaps range, let me tell you, they are genius! Everything folds flat(ish) to help you save space, and for family campers and maximalist glampers like me, the ability to pinch a bit of space back is absolutely priceless! My Collaps kettle and washing up bowl have been going strong for the past 2 years and were a great little investment.
The full Outwell Collaps range.
The regular 1.5 litre kettle is at the front of the shot with the new larger 2.5 litre kettle behind it, RRP £44.99.
The Outwell water carrier is the newest member of the Collaps range RRP £32.99.
Matching children’s SIM from the popular Batboy and Girl range, back for 2018.
Outwell Camper Supreme Sleeping Bag
As well as loving the colour of the Camper Supreme Sleeping Bag, it’s a serious bit of kit. A 4 season sleeping bag that also looks funky and doesn’t feel like you’re sleeping inside an empty crisp packet wrapped tightly in selotape is a rare thing indeed!
Outwell Camper Supreme Sleeping Bag RRP £99.
Woodville 4 tent
This is a great little weekend tent. It providing standing height space. It’s easy to pitch and features longer than average bedrooms too so even though it’s a relatively small tent, it’s still spacious.
Outwell Woodville 4 tent RRP £349.99.

I rather liked the bold new patterns seen across some of the Outwell 2018 furniture range, including these funky (and very comfortable!) Trelwe moon chairs, which come in 3 sizes.

So there you have it, just some of the highlights from the 2018 ranges from Outwell, Robens and Easy Camp.
