Baking Yesteryear. By B. Dylan Hollis. DK, 2023.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Genre: cookbook
Series: N/A
Summary: A decade-by-decade cookbook that highlights the best (and a few of the worst) baking recipes from the 20th century
Friends of baking, are you sick and tired of making the same recipes again and again? Then look no further than this baking blast from the past, as B. Dylan Hollis highlights the most unique tasty treats of yesteryear.
Travel back in time on a delicious decade-by-decade jaunt as Dylan shows you how to bake vintage forgotten greats. With a big pinch of fun and a full cup of humor, you’ll be baking everything from Chocolate Potato Cake from the 1910s to Avocado Pie from the 1960s.
Dylan has baked hundreds of recipes from countless antique cookbooks and selected only the best for this bakebook, sharing the shining stars from each decade. And because some of the recipes Dylan shares on his wildly popular social media channels are spectacular failures, he’s thrown in a few of the most disastrously strange recipes for you to try if you dare.
***Full review below.***
Since this book is non-fiction, my review will be structured a little different from normal.
I've had this book for a while, but I didn't want to post a review before making a few of the recipes myself. I was already a fan of Hollis from his TikToks, so that might introduce some bias into my review - just so you're all aware.
Overall, I found this book to be quirky, easy to follow, and fun. I loved the bright colors and retro-feel to the photo shoots, and I appreciated that almost all of the recipes were accompanied by a picture of the thing you're supposed to be making. I also liked the blurbs written by Hollis himself; they very much felt like his voice, with his characteristic sense of humor balanced by his genuine love for baking and "old things."
Perhaps the most valuable part of this book, however, was the emphasis on lowering barriers to entry. I've read my fair share of baking guides that call for special ingredients or equipment, and there are a lot of recipes out there that are finicky and sure ton dissuade new bakers. Hollis's book, however, emphasizes that most (if not all) of these recipes can be done with basic tools - one does not even need an electric mixer (though it does make some recipes easier). There also aren't many fancy ingredients that aren't readily available at most grocery stores, so that also helps.
I do, however, have some minor criticisms which relate to the usability of this book. For one, the organization makes it rather difficult to find a specific recipe (or even category), particularly if you're like me and don't recall what decade it came from. While organizing the recipes by decade makes sense given the book's premise, it does make it more functionally difficult - you can't flip to the cake section, for example, and browse or put yourself within the general vicinity of the recipe you're looking for. Thus, readers will have to rely on either the TOC or the index a lot more, but this is a minor inconvenience rather than a huge drawback.
I also don't think the majority of the recipes are blow-your-mind good, but honestly, given this book's premise, I don't think that's the worst thing. The recipes are largely taken from sources aimed at home bakers, so you're not going to get professional-level pastries out of them. You will, however, get things that are fun and relatively simple to make, and they taste good enough to me that I'd consider making them multiple times.
TL;DR: Baking Yesteryear is a fine book for fans of Hollis's TikTok, but it goes beyond being mere merch. It not only provides historical recipes that are easy to replicate, but it also does a good job of lowering barriers to entry for new bakers. Experienced bakers might not be overly impressed by the recipes, but engaging with food history is a treat in and of itself, and it's delightful to see someone like Hollis engaging with the past with such enthusiasm and adoration.

An unsettling silence plagued the halls, so quiet you could hear a mouse squeak, but who could blame anyone in the complex for leaving after what had happened in only two weeks.
Nobody wanted to believe it was happening again until the bodies in the morgue began to pile up, and the first mask was found next to the third victim, it was almost a taunt. No...A greeting.
Ghostface was back in business.
The Carpenter sisters were on immediate alert, but it didn't take long for someone to throw a big party, the perfect opportunity for new victims, and for some unknown fucking reason no one seemed to be concerned with the outcome that Samantha and Tara could sense a mile away like clockwork.
Tara stayed home, luckily. But that's not who Sam was worrying about right now as her phone went to voicemail for the 20th time that night, Sam was quick to grab her keys. There were many ways this could go south but with her being radio silent? Sam couldn't care less about the consequences than the idiots that had willingly gone despite the risks. On her way out the door, she texts Chad, Tara, and Mindy to warn them of her whereabouts, gun holstered and knife in her boots.
Never too armed. There was a mace and taser in her purse for backup.
𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♥︎𓆪𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♥︎𓆪𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♥︎𓆪𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♥︎𓆪𓆰♡︎𓆪𓆰♥︎𓆪𓆰♡︎
The scene was a bloodbath, the moment you entered the place there were bodies and puddles of red as far as the eye could see and Samantha was quick to unholster the gun resting on her hip, there wasn't a lot she was afraid of anymore, hell blood had become so normal to her, she stepped over the bodies like they weren't there.
If anything everything in sight had become invisible to her eyes, her thoughts solely on the one person she was hellbent on saving, on protecting. Nearing the staircase, she hears distant voices, and murmurs.
'C'mon, Y/n. Not today.'
Rounding the corner, her heart nearly beat out of her chest when the voices only got louder just for to realize.
'I see trees of green, red roses too..'
She grunts a hiss of air out when her eyes land on an old stereo. With her jaw set, she pushes on, determination filling her gaze like it had only done when Tara was the one who needed her protection. Her head cocking slightly to the side when a new gaze meets hers; pointing the gun directly between the males eyes, she crouches next to the figure.
"Travis. Where's Y/n?" She asked quietly, the sight of her bestfriends boyfriend hidden in the same room she'd gone into putting her on high alert. There was blood on his collar. She scoffs when he doesn't answer. "Trav, c'mon. I need to find her. Keep her safe, that's what you want, no?"
Travis trembles from his spot on the floor, and Sam spots a puddle forming beneath him. The empathy in her eyes left just as fast as it had come, eyes moving down his neck to his hands; Bloodied.
Sam clicks her tongue, standing up from her spot next to him.
"Or at least, that's...that's what you should want, Travis. I mean look at you, lying in wait while your girlfriend gets possibly murdered. Jesus...That's cold-hearted."
Travis squirms from his spot on the floor, eyes frantic and body trembling like a fish out of water. Samantha just watches as he grows more inconsolable, attention on him only diverting when she turns to find a cloaked figure.
Stu's mask on their face.

Samantha barely manages to dodge the knife aiming for her abdomen, stepping out of the way at the last minute, her movements fluid and clean as she does like it's a choreographed dance she'd obsessively learned the steps to.
Her strangely calm demeanor shifts slightly when she looks back at Travis, who only seems...confused.
"You really are a little bitch, Travis. That's what's sad. You date a close friend of a Carpenter sister...but you never thought twice, did you? Don’t you know the rules?"
Holstering her gun, she sighed and kneeled down next to the bed while the cloaked killer worked on dragging Travis to the middle of the room, both his kneecaps had been shot out, rendering the poor thing immobile and utterly useless.
Her fingers brushed against the mask, a shudder running down her spine at the feel of sheer power beneath her thumbs, a legacy she was tired of running from, one she'd been so desperate to get rid of. One that she was now even more hellbent and desperate on keeping alive.
'Do it, Sam. Put it on. You've earned this' Billy's voice plays in her head like an echoing cave, and with every fear the old Samantha held in her heart of hearts...She uses it to drive her; Billy's knife in her boot and his mask in her hand.
Her lips quiver the moment she bites the bullet and puts it on again, this time...to be used as her father intended it to.
'Atta girl, Sammy. Now. Do me proud, kid. Flood this fucking town RED!'
"Sam."
A voice cuts through the hallucinations, snapping Sam out of her stupor, she looks up at the cloaked figure standing over Travis, nodding to herself; a confirmation to herself that there was no going back after this. Standing up, she takes her spot next to the person in Stu's mask, cutting on the voice changer, she feels a spark traveling down her spine, breathing it all in.
Samantha Carpenter meets Samantha Loomis.
"There are rules, Travis. And you broke one of the biggest. Now the sad thing is...I can see it in your eyes. Shifty. Maybe I was wrong, maybe you do wanna save Y/n. Is that what you want? To save her?"
The tears that gathered in his eyes bring a smile to Samantha's face from underneath her mask, neck craning to the side, her eyes meeting her partners just as Travis finally whimpers out a pathetic pleading "Yes".
"You wanna tell him? You do the honors."
Stepping back, Samantha allows them to the front, their voice disguised as well when speaking, a crackling robotic tone sounding through. "It'd be my pleasure. I've really been waiting all night for this."
Dragging his body to a sitting position, they go to lock the door, the radio being turned up just a tad louder to drown out the incessant whimpering, squatted beside him now, they slowly begin removing the plastic Halloween mask.
Travis's eyes widen the moment he's aware of what's underneath.
The tears, oh how they freely fall down the apples of his cheeks.
❦ ⌫ ❦
The radio, it repeats, and it repeats, keeping time with his rapid heartbeats. She straddles his lap, knife grazing his skin, forcing him to look in his eyes.
The tears, oh how they freely fall down the apples of his cheeks.
'I see trees of green, red roses too...I see them bloom for...'
"Y/n." He breathes out shakily.
'Me and you.'
With the voice changer resting underneath her lips, her knife, she nods, pulling a gun. Stu's berretta, from her pocket, whistling quietly.
"And I think to myself..." She leans in closer, a soft smirk curving onto her lips, "What a wonderful world. Hi baby. You know what this is right? Don't worry, I'm not gonna hurt you. We're just talking, right? Just talking. Don't cry."
Samantha's jaw sets watching the scene, her body itching for a kill. Specifically this one.
"What is this? Huh?" She repeats, waving the beretta at him like a nice greeting, or in this case, maybe a solemn goodbye.
"The...The gun you shot me with? I-I don't know, Y/n please...W-why?"
"I'm getting there. Patience. I mean, you're not wrong. I did shoot you with it, but you know...I also shot that bitch you were cheating with. Junie? Her favorite scary movie was weak. The nun. Ugh. No. This? is Stu Macher's gun."
"J-junie's dead?"
"As a bitch, Travis. As a fucking bitch. You know, Sammy's right. You did break a rule. Two actually."
"One, you cheated and told Mindy of all people. My sister, really? You never could handle your fucking liquor." Rising up, she points the gun at his thigh and pulls the trigger, relishing the way his screams align with the music. "You trusted the love interest. Sammy?"
'I see skies of blue and clouds of white...'
On cue, Samantha walks ahead of Y/n, kissing her cheek as she does so, Billy's knife tightly gripped in her hand.
'The bright blessed day...The dark sacred night...'
"I guess you're even, Trav. I mean, she was cheating on you too. Bestfriend? You could say we're close. The only problem is..." Samantha drops down into his lap, but there's nothing erotic about the plans she has for him, her knife to his neck; she removes the old mask, a shit-eating grin on her face, "Only one of you cheated with a goddamned Loomis."
'And I think to myself...'
Without a second word, his throat is slit, and she blacks out. His body riddled with stab wounds when it was all over she could hear Y/n's heeled boots against the floor, looking back to see Stu's berretta pointed at Travis's head though he'd taken his last breath seconds before; smoothly Samantha rolled out of the way, allowing Y/n to deliver a swift shot to the head.
'What a wonderful world...'

After all was said and done, Y/n leaned her forehead against Samantha's taking a deep breath at the next steps, her eyes staring deeply into hers, "I'm ready."
"Baby, we...we don't gotta." Sam reasons, but she shakes her head, a bittersweet smile spread across her cheeks, she whispers to Sam, eyes glossed over with tears. "I won't die. I'll be fine. It's for you, I'll do it for you."
"Are you sure? Completely?"
"Completely."
There's a replica knife, one of Billy's that Y/n had crafted herself, one she'd stabbed Junie with before shooting her, one she'd stabbed Samantha's ex-boyfriend with, and you know the people that came to the party, it was easy to do so when not many dared to arrive due to the restart of the killings and being the only one with a gun helped too, of course.
She passes it into Samantha's gloved hand.
"Do it. And after you do it, I need you to go. Okay? Go, and don't call me. I will call you. Understood?"
"Understood." Samantha takes a deep breath. It had been all too effortless to kill Travis, to kill Gale but the thought of hurting you only slightly was one she hated.
"Now, Sam, NO- AH, FUCK!" As soon as Y/n cries out, she's pulled into Samantha's arms, careful to mind the abdomen wound she'd just given her girlfriend, shushing the poor thing.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry...Shh. Shh, I got you."
As much as Y/n wants to hold on tighter, she just whispers one word in Samantha's ear, sliding off her cloak and handing it to Samantha to get rid of. "Go."
Samantha nodded, pecking Y/n's lips before grabbing the cloak and ducking out of the backdoor they stood by, leaving Y/n to call the police, though she didn't know just how far Y/n would go to protect her until she heard a pained yell inside and a gunshot and as if she could sense Sam's concern, another "GO" is yelled out from inside.
Sam goes.

"She's gone, Sam. She's gone. There's no true love for a Loomis, remember your true love. Pick up the knife, Sammy." His voice grows increasingly aggressive, brows knitted together waving the infamous dagger in front of my face, like bone to dog and it almost physically hurts to not reach my hands out, wrap my fingers around the handle -- Let the electricity liven me.
Her being mentioned is the only thing that breaks my attention away, and I can see his face fall into something blank when he realizes I wasn't budging on my stance, it isn't until I wake up with a jolt, looking at the clock and very predictably my phone, itching to see if she'd called or messaged.
She hadn't.
It wasn't until that afternoon that I heard from her, waiting with bated breaths to see if she was still breathing, if we'd gone too far and she was a part of the carnage, the gunshot still rang fresh as day in my head, her voice the only thing to cut through the thoughts, through my father's taunting. I could hear him now, there was no love to be truly had regarding what we were, but I refused to let him be right. Not when it came to her.
"Spare key. Earth to my beautiful girlfriend?"
I think my jaw goes slack, my lips slightly parting themselves and I'm almost in denial. I'd almost let my father ruin love for me, and though I hadn't budged, that moment of dread I felt when I considered the possibility of her having died ran so deeply that it was almost like seeing a ghost when she's finally within a foot or two in front of me, that familiar cheeky smile stretching from ear to ear.
God, she's as beautiful as I remember and though it's only been a mere half a day apart I find myself scanning her from head to toe, analyzing and trying to scope out if any of the little details that she was made up of had changed; To my relief, the only things out of place are the stab wound near her side, and the cast on her wrist which must've been the beretta's doing.
Other than that...It was her, it was my lady that stood in front of me.
"Oh thank fuck. You're alive." Samantha's hands find my waist so naturally it feels like it's instinct for her, to pull me into an embrace without the slightest thought to it. I can feel her body shudder, eyes pricking with tears; She squeezes me so tight I have to tap her a few times to let her know her hold is a bit too strong, and even then she seems reluctant, as if I've just dealt her a...disrespectful request.
"Not for long if you keep squeezing me like this, sweetheart. I shot myself in the arm, hit nothin' vital. Again there's nothing I wouldn't do to see you get out of this without being caught. Best damn Ghostface there ever was. Y'know that right?" I can't stop staring, though I'd never been able to, not since we'd been friends. Sleepovers almost always ended with us talking about everything and nothing while staring into one another's eyes until the moon made way for the sun.
She nods, but I can tell she's wary and I take no time to bring her into my arms, brushing her hair from her face, a small whisper of a "Hey" spoken through the silence to hush her worries. "I'm alive, okay? Wouldn't leave my favorite girl alone."
"You could've been seriously hurt." Sam nuzzles herself against me, arms gripping around my waist protectively as if she thought I might disappear into thin air.
"But I didn't and if I did? It would've been damn worth it, I don't regret a damn thing." I'm sure of this, I know it to be true. I bring my hand up to her cheek, keeping it there until I'm sure she trusts that it's real, that she's real. I hear her chuckle but there's zero humor behind the sound, it breaks my heart to see her so scared when she whimpers, letting go and allowing herself to be picked up and carried upstairs to her bedroom relenting like she'd never hesitated.
We climb the stairs in a comfortable yet tense silence, making our way to Sam's bedroom. I push the door open with my foot and gently kick it closed all the same.
"Do you trust me?" I ask, sitting her on the bed and coming to take place between her legs, hands cupping her face. I tilt her chin up to look directly into her chocolate-brown gaze.
It's a brief moment before I hear her voice again, I forget myself within one smooth motion, my right hand moving to her lips and a kiss pressed upon the back and if that isn't enough, her words press their own soft kisses to my ears. "I think you might be the only one aside from my sister that I trust right now, Y/n."
Lying her back on the bed, I feel myself aching in ways no one has ever made me ache and I hadn't even touched her yet. She was just that good. I chased the high every time. "Then let me take care of you."
Standing over her, I reached for the hem of her shorts, only hesitating on my movements just to gauge her reactions and make sure this was okay. She had this look that could get her anything she ever wanted and when she flashed it at me I knew to do exactly that.
Those pretty little eyes of hers, she gave me that stare and I was turned a slave for her love, she had me in only one night and she still had me now.
She was always so reluctant to be vulnerable, to allow herself something so human. No one could blame her, she'd gone through a lot to get here. I see it in her though. That fighter. — She still deserved to let those defenses down every now and then and I was more than honored that I'd become trusted with such realities in which Sam just got to be Sam.
"I gotta hear you before I go any further, baby. Speak up for me?"
The poor thing's words must've been caught in her throat for a second or two but I allowed her the chance to gather herself before my lips were on her inner thigh, I swear I did but I know that if I were a lesser woman my self-control would've been stripped the before she uttered a damn word. "Just...touch me."
Now that I didn't need to be told twice.
I think one of the most fascinating things about Samantha is her power to seduce and addict, and she had me absolutely sprung. My lips ghost over her thighs before actually meeting the skin. Call me slow but I loved seeing her reactions and keeping myself between her legs at all times, letting her know how appreciated she truly was.
She looks down at me, her abs taut as I bring up the tank top she's wearing, exposing her muscled physique to my hungry eyes. That dark hooded stare is intense on me, and it's a damn shame she has to work tomorrow. I'd be here all night if I could.
My lips had wandered everywhere, neglecting Samantha and themselves while straying away from its intended target until finally, we'd both had enough. She lets out a frustrated whine and I'm too far gone to keep denying myself so I settle our collective woes when I wrap my lips around her bud, her body flinching only to end up running further into my tongue. One hand gripping her thigh in a firm hold.
I bury myself within the temple that is Samantha Carpenter's body, her slick coating my lips, my cheeks, my nose. Drowning in the scent and taste of her all I feel is a simple man's greed. Right now I am that simple man, and I have only one thing on my mind.
Making her sing. I always told her she had a beautiful voice.
Her moans egg me on, legs hoisted up on my shoulders. Her gaze is still locked in on me heavy, and when I pull away for air I can see a small hint of disappointment. "You seem disappointed. Have I disappointed you, my love? Don't be afraid. Speak your mind."
"You're an assho-" I shush her with my lips, giving her a taste of the liquid heaven that rests between her thighs, a moan slips out of those beautiful lips and the sound gets me high. I pull back, my mind back in that simple man's place as I lower myself back between her thighs. My tongue finds her slit and runs the length, revelling in the way she shudders each time.
Once upon a time, I told her my favorite thing was making out with her. I didn't clarify that I meant that in every sense of the word my mouth engaged in a heated makeout session with Sam's cunt. I'm not ashamed to admit it but after the night I had that ended with my arm in a sling, this felt like a reward. I'd gotten to the finish line. My prize was in front of me, and I was happy to take it. More than.
It wasn't long before I recognized those telltale signs that meant she was close to climax. The way her eyebrows knitted and she bit down on her lip harshly trying not to show just how good she was feeling, as she attempted to keep some semblance of that signature Samantha stubbornness; She failed miserably again and again. It was amusing to watch, and I was more than willing to...but granting her the serenity of hiding in the end was something that was completely off the table.
I let two of my fingers graze the edge of her hole, eyeing her reaction when I plunge the two deeply into her pretty pussy. If I wasn't so occupied I think I could've smirked a little.
The reaction this garner is as precious as it is delicious. Her legs squeezed themselves around my neck, her hands gripping the sheets and her back arched, eyes squeezed shut as her orgasm wracked through her body.
Her taste is something I couldn't quit if I tried, and I had no intention to. No, in fact, I locked my lips around her, fingers pumping in and out with her cum coating my tongue. Every little drip came from paradise and god was it heavenly.
And listen to that melody in which she sings my name.
"Y/n...B-baby, I can't-"
Fucking beautiful.

"Do you think we could ever live a normal life?" She asks while her girlfriend lathers her hair up with shampoo, sitting behind her in the clawfoot bathtub. She can still see flashes of the carnage they left behind and she wonders just how much of her father she'd absorbed from the real-life cases to the movies her friends liked to binge repeatedly, and now she was continuing his legacy. A killer.
Y/n can practically see the overthinking inner battle Sam is having, and she immediately stops her movements. She pulls her in, one arm wrapped securely around her waist and the other tilting her head up to face her. She presses a brief but sweet, gentle kiss to her lips. Her forehead is against Sam's when they pull away.
"I'm gonna be honest, my love. I don't know. But what I do know is that I'm damn well gonna fight for one for us. Do you hear me? I want you to fight too. I...need you to fight too."
Her voice cracks on her last words until she feels two hands grabbing hers. Sam's eyes move over her and it's like she's falling in love with her girlfriend all over again. "Hey. I never said I was giving up."
Y/n stops in her tracks, taking a deep breath and nodding in agreement. "You didn't..."
Sam shakes her head, a smile slowly crawling onto her lips. She leans in to kiss Y/n again, head back against hers. "I didn't."

November (AND December) writing stuff:
I was hoping for 25k in October, but said I’d be content with anything above 20k. And, well, I got 21.5k, so…I guess I’m content? I’ve continued to struggle with some Post-COVID symptoms, and still don’t really feel like I’ve completely recovered, tbh, so I’ve been very careful about pacing myself while I recover.
Frankly, I hate it. Going to keep doing it though, at least through the rest of the year, wrapping up loose ends, steadily working toward the end of SAIT (though it’ll end in early 2025), and doing some Data Collection before I embark on another Kickstarter, also in early 2025. It’s also my niece’s first Christmas, and while she won’t remember a thing, I am fully prepared to be completely extra about it.
So I’m actually going to do a 'what to expect (rest of 2025 edition)'. My writing goal for the year was 225k words and I’m currently at 213k so technically anything about 12k is a success? Which seems...achievable, obviously.
I’m aiming for about 20k in November and 10-20k in December, so let’s say anywhere between 30 and 40k is my goal for the rest of the year. The higher end will tip me over 250k in 2024, so I’m going to be aiming for it, but if I don’t reach it because I was too busy taking my 650th picture of my niece, well. That’s okay.
On AO3:
4 Whalers. As usual. Though warning in advance that it’s likely to be a 2:1 SAIT-COTT ratio rather than the usual 1:1.
On tumblr: Andreas and Luke meeting/hooking up the second time (it’s done, and coming shortly!), Willy and Owen! Anything, and TBD by Patreon Poll
Also on tumblr: don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the posts on writing, I’ve just had to prioritize some other work due to fucky energy levels
Patreon beneath the cut:
SOTW:
Nov: 6th, 20th
Dec: 4th, 18th
(they’re all done: I spent some of October getting ahead so that when SAIT starts really getting momentum and I get one-track-mind about it as I'm wont to do, I won't be missing deadlines as a result)
SOTM: TBD by Knockout poll x 2!

Animage July 2024 Issue Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger 20th: Fireball Booster ft. Sainei Ryuji x Hayashi Tsuyoshi Interview (translation below)
Publication: June 10, 2024
The Returning Heroes
The Dekarangers fight space criminals and protect people's peace and safety. Sainei Ryuji-san and Hayashi Tsuyoshi-san, who play the roles of the famous duo Ban and Hoji, talk about their thoughts on the new film.
Ban (Akaza Banban): A former detective of the Earth Branch, he's now active in the Special Unit Fire Squad. He used to be reckless, but over the years, he's learned to use better judgment.
Hoji (Tomasu Houji): A serious, calm and composed detective of the Earth Branch, who's an exceptional marksman. While he does recognize Ban's abilities, when called "partner," he always responds with, "Don't call me partner." _
SPD: Special Police Dekaranger
20 years ago, six detectives from the Space Police's Earth Branch confronted the Space Criminals Alienizer. They've gathered again after such a long time, and launch an investigation into a large explosion. In pursuit of their suspect, Raenjo, the six must face the grand plan left behind by her husband, the galactic drug lord Tarewarane.
The 28th Super Sentai series, "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger," which aired on TV from 2004 to 2005, is currently screening its newest film in theaters. As one of the most popular series, Dekaranger has often had sequels produced since its broadcast ended. This film, made on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, contains many topics, such as the appearance of a new form for DekaRed, and location filming in Kochi, but the relationship between Ban and Hoji is most noteworthy.
Ban steps away to teach and guide the newcomer, while Hoji remains the same at the frontlines. As his "partner," Hoji has mixed feelings about Ban, who's lost his reckless side from 20 years ago. The drama of friendship between the two men, portrayed through the incident, is sure to be felt even by former fans. Fighting coolly with passionate hearts, we hope that you'll be able to witness the courage of Dekaranger in its 20th year.
Sainei Ryuji x Hayashi Tsuyoshi Interview
-In the next production, Hoji will be…?!-
"Please tell us your thoughts after reading the script for this film."
Sainei: Honestly, I thought the details didn't have a 20th Anniversary feel to them. However, it seems like the Producer's aim was to not do anything special, and that they wanted us to work on it without it being overbearing.
Hayashi: I also felt like it was an extension of the main TV series. Of course, there are depictions that'll make you feel the passage of time.
Sainei: Among other things, I think that the relationship and feelings Ban and Hoji have for each other, and their conflicts about what hasn't and has changed were depicted well.
"Did you do any preparation before filming began?"
Hayashi: Weirdly enough, I can become Hoji naturally as soon as I flip the switch. As my debut work, I have alot of memories, as well as a strong emotional attachment to it. That being the case, I decided to recreate the look and feel of my original appearance in order to make it more enjoyable for the fans. With Ban in particular, the other members have changed alot, from their hair to their clothes, so I thought of atleast getting my hairstyle back. I spent nearly a year growing it out, and I changed it from being black as seen during the 10th Anniversary (Dekaranger: 10 YEARS AFTER) to a more natural brown color. I don't have a perm, but when I get my makeup done, I have them add abit of a wave to make it look like I have a perm. Even when I was asked to cut my hair for other jobs, they were understanding when I explained things to them.
Sainei: I myself didn't do anything.
Hayashi: So cool (laughs). Still, you become Ban in no time, right?
Sainei: Yeah, that's right. Director Watanabe even said, "I thought you'd become an adult after 20 years, but when you say your lines, it's amazing how you return to being Ban."
"How have your impressions of each other changed over the past 20 years?"
Sainei: Tsuyoshi and Kinoshita-san are the only ones among our members who can genuinely say, "My profession is being an actor." Including myself, the other four do a variety of things, and acting is one of them. It's difficult to continue doing one thing for 20 years, but I think we've gained something by doing so. I felt that the two of them, who've been actors for a long time, were different from the rest of us.
Hayashi: As a full time actor, if you ask me, it's the other way around. I think you have to learn alot in order to be able to take on various challenges.
Sainei: I couldn't take the dissatisfaction that comes with an acting career, so I left. I'm sure there must be things that've happened during Tsuyoshi's acting career that he absolutely couldn't stand. It's truly amazing that you've been an actor for so long while enduring it all.
Hayashi: I've felt this way since back then, but unlike Ban, Ryuji's smart and has composure. And now, 20 years later, I feel like he has a much more curious mind to pursue something. This may be an old fashioned expression, but I think he's going to become a really nice, handsome old man. As usual, he possesses something I don't have, moreover, his capability has become greater.
"What are some key points you'd like people to especially pay attention to in this film?"
Sainei: I'd like you to pay attention to the Suit Actors this time. Especially Fukuzawa-san, who became an Action Director over the past 20 years, and is also a Director for Kamen Rider. Not only was he the Action Director, but he himself played the role of Premiere DekaRed, and not only was he able to move well, but he also added a sense of weight to it, which was truly wonderful. Anime fans watching anime pay attention to Voice Actors and think, "They can do this kind of voice" or, "They can do this kind of performance," right? I hope that the audience will enjoy the film from that same point of view and think, "This Suit Actor is in it, and he can move like that" or, "It has more weight than before." I hope that the profession of being a Suit Actor will be recognized with more respect.
Hayashi: If I had to name a scene in which I appeared in, it would be the untransformed action scene with Naoko-san, who plays DekaPink in this film. I was the only one among our members who had an action scene this time, and it was the first time for me to do an action scene with Naoko-san. At first, they planned to cut alot of the film, but Fukuzawa-san said, "Tsuyoshi can do it," and we were almost able to do the whole thing from a single angle. Even though I don't normally do action scenes, Naoko-san did a great job of making me look strong and cool, while Fukuzawa-san skillfully made it look appealing. I don't mean to steal Ryuji's words, but I realized that there are many areas where we shine due to the presence of the Suit Actors, so I hope that you'll pay close attention to them.
"So far, Dekaranger has produced multiple sequels, and we think there are those who are anticipating even more sequels."
Sainei: As I mentioned in the beginning, including the way it ends, there's not much special about this one. So, I personally think it'd be better to do some sort of production with a conclusion, or a grand finale. However, I feel that if we don't do it within the next five years, it'll start to become tough for everyone. Especially from the point of view of the audience. The gap between their memories of that time and the present is becoming increasingly large. If we're going to do something for the 25th Anniversary, we need an idea of what we can do. If we're talking about characters, Hoji should definitely die in the line of duty.
Hayashi: What the heck! (laughs).
Sainei: It's fine, it'll be an unexpected role (laughs).
Hayashi: It's true that unexpected is good, but… (laughs). After what happened to Teresa (character who appeared in episode 37 of the TV series), why can't he be rewarded in the end? Everyone else is grabbing ahold of their own happiness, so it'd be good for Hoji to have some sort of redeeming part too, right?
Sainei: I see. Something like marriage?
Hayashi: Right. After his wedding, when Hoji's child is born, Ban would say something like, "My partner's become happy."
Sainei: Seems like it raises a death flag, no? (laughs).
Hayashi: It certainly raises a death flag! (laughs). In the final scene, Hoji's child would say something like, "I'd like to partner up with Ban-san" and then Ban will say, "Well then, I'll wait until you've grown up" and then it ends……I'd be fine with that (laughs). _
(page 109, from top to bottom)
Eternal Combination The members of Earth Branch, including Hoji, Sen, Jasmine, Umeko and Tetsu, and the other Dekarangers, Chief Doggie Kruger, and mechanic Shiratori Swan, are all still alive and well in this film. With a combination of skills, they conduct a massive search across the entire universe.
Promising Newcomer Edogawa Rui, a member of Fire Squad, appears in this film as Ban's junior. He's a promising newcomer who's been entrusted with the SP1 License by Ban. While cool and reasonable, during the investigation, he has his doubts about the overly unusual approach used by the members of Earth Branch.
The Special Police go to Kochi While Ban, Umeko and Rui head for the Alienizer Special Zone, and Hoji and Jasmine head for the planet Chima, where Raenjo, the suspect in this case used to live, Sen and Tetsu fly to Kochi. They try to get in touch with Mokumisu, a Ridomihan who's familiar with plants, and yet…..?
Premiere DekaRed The Suit Actor for Premiere DekaRed, DekaRed's new form, is Fukuzawa Hirofumi-san, who played DekaRed in the TV series and is the Action Director for this film. Make sure to pay attention to the special action performed by this Super Sentai legend.
Absolute Flawless Teamwork! With all mysteries unraveled, the curtains rise for the final decisive battle between the Dekarangers and Alienizers. Blinking is prohibited as you watch the battle scenes featuring the sleek teamwork of the six, the efforts of the Dekaranger Robos, and Premiere DekaRed's standout performance!

RvB 20th rewatch: s1
Here it is, after giving myself some time to let the post restoration emotions settle I am finally commencing my 20th rewatch of RvB 1-13. I’ll be sharing my thoughts as I go and doing a few other special things. I’ll also be rewatching the PSAs, miniseries, and some of the extra stuff that’s on the dvds! Welp let’s get started with season 1!
Trocadero really didn’t have to go that hard right out the gate but they did that for us
Grimmons and chucker really started it all huh…
Also the way one of Sarge’s first lines is a grimmons joke istg
The way the characters are so well established right from the get go- they say so much with so little. Like right away you get that Sarge doesn’t like Grif and Simmons sucks up to Sarge without them ever directly saying it. They just have natural flowing and sounding dialogue that allows you to infer all this information so easily and I just RAAAHHHH THIS SHOWS DIALOGUE IS SO GOOD
“A walrus” “didn’t I just tell you to stop making up animals!” Is one of my favorite lines in the whole show I quote it so frequently
DONUT MY BELOVED REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE JUST A NORMAL DUDE
Remember when Caboose called Tex a slut? Absolutely wild times fr
I love how this show allows its characters to have bad comebacks and lame jokes. It’s part of what makes the characters feel so damn real cause let’s face it- we all fail to have witty comebacks from time to time
“WHO IS RUNNING THIS ARMY” a line that came back to bite RT in the ass so many times lol
Love how the character that can’t aim for shit had the sniper as his signature weapon. One of the funniest bits in the show.
Also love how in the time that they spent arguing over the teleporter they could’ve walked to Donut 😂
“What the fuck are you babbling about” is also one of my most quoted lines
Donut really was the only normal one in the beginning lol
Ah the true inciting incident- Church’s first death. If that hadn’t happened we’d probably have an entirely different show.
Remember when Vic was also normal
TEX MY BELOVED
“That makes you a gay robot” Caboose predicted the entire story in one line
Church: explaining that he’s a ghost. // Tex who knows the entire truth: oh I am going to milk the shit out of this
Girlie really just said yes and to a bit Church didn’t know he was a part of
GOD THE UNINTENTIONAL FORESHADOWING IS CRAZY FROTHING AT THE MOUTH
“I never told him… he was my son” imagine if In restoration when Sarge dies he told Grif he was his son… honestly that single throw back could’ve redeemed the entire season for me could you IMAGINE I would have LOST IT
Church’s determination to save Tex being their downfall is such an established thing all the way back in season 1 and it follows the entire series and I just AGDJGAKSHSKHSKDGDJHD
They were doomed from the start
They could never escape the cycle
O’Malley my beloved
Holy shit the nostalgia hit hard during those credits, it’s only season 1 and I’m already getting teary eyed I’m not gonna survive this rewatch
Welp season 1 is done! God I love this show so much. Truly there are no words for how much it means to me. It just feels like coming home every time I watch it.

We expect this campaign to be ready for launch in roughly a year (late 2024 or early 2025).
Untitled General Imprint Anthology: we’re in the very preliminary stages of discussing a theme for our next general imprint anthology, and we expect to open recruitment for it in the late spring, with an expected publication date of summer, 2025.
Scrap Metal Angel by Nicola Kapron: our next novella project, we are working on final editing, and once that’s done we’ll begin work on a cover, artwork, and other campaign aspects. We don’t yet have a time frame on pre-orders, but definitely during 2024, before the fall.
The Twinned Trilogy by Tris Lawrence: we still have a great deal of editing to complete on this project, but covers are done and the pre-launch page is on Kickstarter. We’re aiming for spring or summer 2024 for crowdfunding.
We have several other novellas and novels in the pipeline, but none that we’re ready to announce yet. Be on the look-out!
Want to always know the latest on what we’re working on? Want a say in what we work on next? Want behind-the-scenes access, more information, awesome extras, free stories, and more? Want exclusive extra merch for supporting our future campaigns? Best yet: want the joy of supporting queer independent publishing? If you said “yes” to any of these, there’s no time like today to become a backer of our Patreon!

history of the microwave minimum button presses category
for those that aren't aware, the Microwave MinimuM button presses category (commonly called mmm presses) is the category of microwaverunning that requires the cooking to be finished with the least amount of button presses possible. 1min% is the most commonly run subcategory, although 30sec% and 99:99% subcategories have also been recently developed. i'll mostly be talking about 1min% though, which aims to cook the food for precisely one minute.
the first run in this category was done by a runner named Markrowaver on june 29th, 2025, who completed his run in only 5 button presses, taking the 0, 1, 0, 0, [Start] route. it was overall a very impressive run with very few mistakes, but he believed there was still room for optimization.
this record remained unbroken for over four months. Markrowaver kept doing runs over this time, but he was unable to come even close to beating his original record. he became more and more certain that the sequence he used could not be optimized any further. but that all changed when a new runner named Hot_pocket50 entered the scene. he soon discovered a new strat that he called "the starting 0 skip." basically, by using Markrowaver's original strategy, but omitting the first zero and going directly into pressing the 1, he found out that you could save an entire button press, and on november 1st, 2025, he was able to obtain the new world record of just 4 presses.
(music change, start playing sad music)
Markrowaver had never felt so defeated. he couldn't believe that someone so young and so new to the microwaverunning scene could best him so easily. he privated his twitter and was never seen in the community again.
(slow cross fade, give the audience time to absorb that highly emotional moment)
for over a year, Hot_pocket50 remained the mmm presses champion. after all, there were no unnecessary presses in his run, so it seemed to be mechanically impossible to use any less.
but that all changed on january 20th, 2026...
...
(sudden dramatic zoom-in on a microwave)
...
this is the +30sec tech.
previously thought to only be viable in 30sec% runs, the +30sec tech was first used in a 1min% on january 5th, 2026 by a runner named Beepi234, who had only been doing runs to beat their own pb (peanut butter). there, it was used in a unique 3, 0, [Start], +30sec, [Start] route, which wasn't even close to beating the current record, but would form the basis for the record-breaking run two weeks later. there, by sheer accident, Beepi pressed the following sequence: +30sec, +30sec, [Start].
...
and it worked.
none of the other runners believed it, but after being reviewed under careful scrutiny, even having the validity of the microwave itself called into question, the moderators of microwaverun dot com verified the 3-press run. after this, there were attempts from various runners of a 6, 0, [Start] route, but none of them could do any better than tying Beepi's original record. Beepi234 was now the undisputed champion of microwaverunning, and no one could challenge their record.
(fade to black)
...
...
except for themselves.
as a runner who previously only aimed to beat their own pb, it only makes sense that Beepi would continue their attempts. but with the current ruleset, how would a sub-3-press 1min% run?
and the answer
was
...
pizza.
this is where it starts to get interesting.
around the time that Beepi's 3-press run was submitted, microwaveminers had discovered a completely unused button in the microwave's system: the [Pizza] button. (literally, this button has never seen use), but this button was actually very easily accessible through the microwave's face by using an advanced exploit called "moving your hand upward." what did it do, you ask?
it instantly set the microwave to exactly 1:00.
and it was about to be the key to Beepi's sub-3-press run.
now, even if the [Pizza] button had been discovered sooner, it is highly unlikely that it ever would have seen used outside of TAS runs. the exploit required to access it is highly precise, and just a few centimeters can be the difference between successfully pressing it and having to reset.
but that didn't stop Beepi.
once again, by complete accident, while microwaving normally on stream on February 14th, 2026, Beepi pressed the [Pizza] button while attempting to press the 2 button, and before they realized their "mistake," pressed the [Start] button. even though luck made it happen, it was considered still a valid run. no one thereafter had ever even attempted the "moving your hand upward" exploit in a serious run, and so Beepi remained as the holder of the mmm presses 1min% record with only two presses.
(fade to black again)
...
...
...
...
(everyone thinks it's over and has gone home)
...
...
...
...
...
...
(it seems like a pretty satisfying ending to me)
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...for less than a week.
no one thought it possible to beat 2-presses, but on February 19th, 2026, the impossible was done.
...
and the doer
...
was none other than Markrowaver.
i lied at the beginning so i could have this dramatic moment later.
after what was thought to be a permanent hiatus from the microwaverunning community, Markrowaver returned with a truly unbeatable run: a run with just a 1 button press. he decided to rethink his original mindset, not to become jealous of other runners, but to learn from their successes.
here's how he did it.
after carefully studying Beepi234's record-holding run, he learned how to replicate it at a fairly consistent rate. this was good, but he would not be able to do any better than tie with them, unless he made some kind of unbelievable development.
and that's exactly what he did.
by pressing the [Pizza] button, and not releasing it, he only performed half of a button press (a button press actually has three parts to it: when the button is pressed, when the button is held, and when the button is released. and together, this forms one complete button press). while holding down the [Pizza] button, he simultaneously began holding down the [Start] button, performing another half-press. together these add up to exactly 1 single button press.
the downside of this method, aside from being highly technical, is that the runner is unable to release these buttons, lest they add additional press-parts. as a result of this, Markrowaver has been unable to do any further microwaveruns, or really anything for that matter, without forfeiting the run. the upside of this method is that no one has attempted to beat his record, and he remains the world-record holder to this very day.
...
there is one single way that this run could be bested, and that is a run with 0 button presses. but is it even possible?
potentially.
if one were to bash their microwave really hard with a hammer, it is technically possible that they could trigger it for exactly one minute, but to this day, no one, not even Beepi, has been that willing to risk leaving their run up to that much RNG. moreover, if an attempt at this method were to fail, the runner would have a bashed microwave.
...
...
...
...
...
...
and that's exactly what i have.
THIS is the history of the microwave minimum button presses category thanks for watching PLAY THE LOFI OUTRO

We're worth it, Chapter 27, March 20th
Chapters 1 through 26 of We’re Worth It can be found here Here be Dragons is the original fic that this fic is a companion piece for - HBD timeline: Chapter 18, before the epilogue
March 20th, 2017
“It was very burnt…Mina is still picking on him about it,” Molly giggled, thinking about all the snarky comments their daughter had been making about Sherlock’s failed attempt to bake a pie.
“Why were you baking a pie so early?” June asked, laughing.
“It was Pie Day,” he said simply but she raised an eyebrow in question. “March 14th, three one four, it’s one of the ways to note the date.”
“Ohhh, three point one four.” June nodded in understanding. “I am surprised that you acknowledge that way of noting the date.”
He shrugged. “Bad science pun. Plus, Mina thought it was funny…at the time,” he mumbled the last few words. The two women exchanged a look, stifling giggles.
“Soooo,” June dragged it out, indicating the shift in conversation, “did you talk with your therapist about your stag party? About trusting yourself?”
Sherlock nodded as he leaned forward. “It was a good session. I don’t think – ” he sighed, cutting himself off before taking a deep breath. “I will always be an addict, but for right now, am in a very good place and with Greyson starting to sleep through the night my concern that I might be triggered is very low.” Both Molly and June nodded in understanding. “We talked about how my drug use is not just a simple impulsive act but a deep rooted, toxic coping mechanism for my self-hatred.”
“Buzz words…” Molly whispered, making June giggle quietly.
“Hush,” Sherlock scoffed at her, but smirked. “Obviously, I am not going to walk into the middle of a drug den right now – bad idea – but I am also not in the middle of withdrawal, nor have I had any cravings in months.” He shifted in his seat, an indication, June had learned, of him striving to get his wording accurate. “Right now, I need to focus on my self-doubt when it comes to being a husband and a father.”
“Focusing on that will help you feel more secure in your sobriety?” June asked and he nodded. “Okay.” Looking at Molly, “It’s been a while since you have needed an individual session – any concerns with dissociation, triggers, feeling overwhelmed?”
Molly shook her head with a smile, “No, I’ve been feeling great! Really focused at work…haven’t cut up the wrong dead body yet.” June smiled at her, glad that Molly had become comfortable enough with being herself in session. “I’ve been doing my best to review my warning signs list at least once a week and I practice my skills with Mina.”
“I love hearing that – she will be well set up in the future to help herself regulate, that’s great!” She paused a moment before continuing, “With the wedding next month, unless you two can think of something more urgent, I say we focus today’s work on how you two as a couple can help Sherlock with his self-doubt.” They both nodded in agreement. “Let’s start with how things are going with being mindful of sharing how you are feeling with each other.”
Molly sighed, “It is possible to check-in with your significant other too often?”
“Nope,” Sherlock popped his lips.
She turned to him, gaping. “You asked for two check-ins an hour last night.”
“Oh,” June nodded in understanding. “Yeah, that can be a lot of checking-in and emotional sharing.”
“SO MUCH!” Molly huffed, but June could tell she wasn’t really mad. “I don’t want to limit us being open,” she held her hand out and he took it, “But I don’t need to tell you that I am having the same emotion 7 times in one night either.” She squeezed his hand in emphasis.
He thought for a moment. “I may have over done it last night.” He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. “I will aim for no more than 3 check-ins a night…on average.” A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
“Thank you.” Molly shook her head.
June looked between the two of them, “That is a really good compromise for you two.” She turned her attention back to Sherlock. “Can you explain what you meant last session when you said,” she checked the notebook on her desk to make sure she got it right, “I mess up when things are good?”
Sherlock nodded but stayed quiet for a moment while he thought. “All of our problems started…” he stopped when he noticed June’s frown. Clearing his throat, he continued, “One of the first moments of this in our relationship was when I choose to stay at Baker Street after I got out of the hospital instead of going home.”
June nodded when she realized he thought he had explained himself fully, “Okay…I think I am going to need more of a connection than that, especially since we have talked about this decision in a different context before – can you expound?”
“I know I’ve brought up that I was angry at myself for that decision because in reality it did nothing for Molly and Mina’s safety, nor did it assist in my working of the Magnussen case.” He paused to take a deep breath, “The reality is that I got in my head and told myself that my presence in their lives was a risk…and that I was not worth the risk.”
June opened her mouth, but Sherlock was staring at the ground so when she noticed Molly frown and turn her head to look out the window, she kept quiet, watching them. Molly’s brow furrowed deeper, and she gave an angry sigh through her nose, before turning back to her fiancé.
“You have always been worth the risk.” Her words were intense, and her expression was hard, serious. Sherlock looked up at her, taken back by her severity. “Sherlock, I helped you fake your death for fucks sake.” Righteous anger rolled off her. “Do you remember asking me why I was risking everything for you?” He was silent as he nodded yes, of course. “I told you then that you were worth it.”
“Molly, it’s not that I don’t believe you, I just – ” he started but she cut him off.
“Oh, I know you believe me!” Tears were streaming down her face. “I am not angry with you. I am angry with the situation – I am furious that your brain constantly lies to you about how I feel about you.” She roughly wiped her face. “I chose you a long time ago and if everything we have been through so far hasn’t changed that, nothing will.” Grabbing his hand, she forced him to look her in the eye again. “I choose you.”
He was silent as he stood, pulling her up with him, and gathered her in his arms, silently burying his face in the crock of her neck.
June smiled to herself as she turned her gaze out the window, giving them a moment.
After a minute or so, she heard Sherlock quietly tell Molly that he chose her too before releasing his hold on her. They took a moment to adjust themselves and get settled back into their chairs.
June nodded to them both. “It has been a long time since we discussed affirmations, but I think in light of this conversation, that it would be a good idea to add it back into your daily routines.” They both nodded. “Good, I think it will also help you feel really solid as you go into the wedding as well.”

IMO, the Star Wars OT is a huge space opera, but at heart it's about Luke learning about his abusive/addict father and making peace with him and the things inside Luke that he shared with his father. it's about how he is tempted by the dark side too, about Anakin as his shadow he has to incorporate and make peace with.
The historical context in the US fits with this and helps explain (in part) why this story hit so hard with the public. It was a period of major generational conflict between Boomers and their parents, the WW2 gen, over the Vietnam War (which many ww2 veterans pushed their sons into). Within that, the OT was written by a Boomer about a touchy-feely kid who wanted to go express himself and chill instead of becoming a machine man, a weapon of war like his father, who serves the "Empire" (which Lucas has said was based on the US!! It was based on the US war machine). The WW2 gen/Boomer generational conflict is right there - as is the way that a LOT of the WW2 generation men had deep trauma they never dealt with besides self-medicating with alcohol* and numbing it as best they could. (and often also hitting their kids/wives).** That was something a lot of younger men like Lucas didn't want for themselves; they tried to embrace psychology, self-help, myths and mysticism, emotion.
A WW2 generation man as this numb, violent, terrifying being locked away in a suit? And the idea that maybe somewhere inside there is a heart that could love you? Powerful stuff for a generation of boys that largely grew up being (to one degree or another) knocked around by emotionally distant fathers.
The metaphor works beautifully and I think where Ahsoka's relationship with Anakin as a father/elder brother figure goes in Ahsoka ep 5 is aiming for a similar level of emotional nuance re: how love and abuse can be complex and how someone can "fall" to the darkness, but it's not a simple situation for you as someone who loves them. (Similarly, the handling of the late Jedi Order's abusive behavior in sending children into battle has been done with nuance as well). Because she does love him and she does feel that he is a part of her - so until she can make peace with that and what it means, she cannot be at peace with herself*** and her own right to live and be whole rather than afraid of herself.
I think the inner psychological journey stuff is a rich thing that comes out of a specific period and its dynamics and yet continues to be able to speak to powerful issues re: trauma, love, addiction, and abuse. There's other ways of interpreting it, and it's a story, so those are valid. But I do get frustrated when the metaphorical reading is dismissed out of hand or denigrated, when Lucas and Filoni both intentionally draw on Jungian psychology and mythology in ways that fit with it as a reading.
I'm still annoyed at the person on Twitter yesterday who told me I was being "harmful" toward survivors of abuse (I am myself a survivor of abuse) for liking Ahsoka Episode 5. Like.... my dear Twitter person, I am not telling you how to feel about abuse or art or telling you that your reactions make you a bad person, would you extend me the same grace? No? Okay.
*mental health care was shit at the time, like absolutely shit if you weren't rich. i cannot emphasize enough how absolutely shit it was. some states even put any mental hospitalizations you had on records viewable by potential employers so they could see it and discriminate against you. so it's complicated - partly the embrace of mental health comes from the Boomer gen and their backlash against their parents' "keep it all inside" school of thought and the damage it caused
**I did a dissertation on late 20th Century mental health care in the US
***not everybody is going to relate to this and that's okay! there is no one right way to heal! it's not a simple thing or an exact science; humans are too complex for that

Encanto OC Event Week 2
Part 1: Tomás Herrera & The Madrigals
For this week about OC relationships, this'll be a perfect opportunity for me to introduce a couple background OCs that I wasn't able to last week. In order to prevent an insane amount of clogging I've decided to split the info into multiple posts, starting with the Madrigals' relationship with my favorite Just Some Guy: Tomás Herrera!
Tomás, like many other villagers within the Encanto, has lived his life understanding that the Madrigals were special people with incredible abilities. He's grown up respecting them as such, but eventually he'll come to find himself being taken in as one of their own and adopting their name - and their legacy. But though Tomás is happy to marry the love of his life and join her family, doing so comes with some difficulty adjusting to the new environment: he's gone from a household of four, to three, to two, to over a dozen. Everything gets so busy and bustling so quickly, and initially it's a little hard to keep up; for the first few years under Casita's roof, Tomás feels decidedly "un-ceptional" and like an outsider who is a Madrigal in name only. But as years go by and he gets more comfortable with all the new activity, responsibilities, and magic, he'll come to accept himself as being where he belongs just as the rest of the family already has.
Tumblr media
In regards to Camilo Madrigal:
Tomás and three of his good friends (Santiago Torres, Cristián Vargas, and Rafael Molina) bond with Camilo as they and the rest of the town help to rebuild Casita after the events of the movie. Camilo had his own friends his age, of course, but there was something special to him about being taken in by a patch of older boys and being considered one of their own. He's simply Little Brother Shaped!
Tumblr media
Though all four of them have their own dynamics with Camilo, Tomás and Camilo grow very close despite their seemingly conflicting personalities. Camilo aims to help Tomás loosen up and come out of his shell in ways he likely wouldn't attempt to do on his own, and in return Tomás offers Camilo stable and level-headed advice that is a welcome change in perspective from the kind he gets at home.
Of course they can get on each other's nerves, namely when Tomás won't budge or when Camilo's joking goes too far. But all in all they're a bulletproof duo, where Camilo gets the older brother he never had and Tomás gets to be the older brother he should have had.

In regards to Luisa Madrigal:
Tumblr media
The experiences Tomás had growing up alongside Luisa Madrigal weren't unique nor exclusive only to him. He's hardly the first or only villager she's extended her hands to over the years - but from mundane favors to quite literally saving his life, everything Luisa has ever done for Tomás has meant the world to him, even if to her they were simply her duties as a Madrigal.
But despite what he may have believed, Tomás hadn't been completely invisible to Luisa. She knew him well enough as someone she grew up and went to school with, and though she was indeed doing what she needed to, she never really forgot any time she helped him (or anyone else). If anything, he was a friend to her!
What really sealed Tomás's fate was a moment he witnessed something he wasn't meant to, one that helped him recognize that someone as unremarkable as him and someone as special as her actually could have something in common: the mindset that one's own feelings could be ignored when there were more important things to worry about. From there admiration blossomed ruthlessly into a hopeless crush, and though it took him a while to be able to pull it off, he relayed his feelings to her through a simple gift: a hand carved wooden dove for her 20th birthday.
As a couple they compliment each other nicely, though in a different way than Tomás's friendship with Camilo. They are each other's pillar; his emotional stability allows him to support her in her time of need, whereas he feels safe and at ease when she's around. Luisa can very well take care of herself, this she and everyone else knows... but sometimes it's nice to sit back and let herself be treated like a princess, something Tomás is always more than happy to oblige. There's little room for arguments or disagreements between them, provided they don't try to out-martyr each other - sometimes it is necessary for one to wring true feelings and thoughts out of the other like they're pulling teeth. But they can't hide from each other, and over time it becomes much easier for them to be open and accept that maybe their feelings do matter when someone is willing to listen.
He is her osito. She is his paloma. he's so in love with her it makes him look stupid

In regards to the other Madrigals:
Bulletpoints to make things go a little more quickly--
Julieta, as his future mother-in-law, is the closest thing Tomás has had to a mom since his own's passing. He's bashful around her for a while, even moreso when he gets the greenlight to start calling her Ma. He comes to enjoy helping her in the kitchen periodically, as he already has cooking experience from living with his father.
He wants to make a good impression on Agustín very much, despite how remarkably easy it is to get on the man's good side - all Tomás really had to do was promise to take care of his daughter and Agustín was sold. Tomás would like Agustín to teach him how to play piano but he doesn't know how to ask.
Mirabel, by virtue of hanging out with Camilo a lot, ends up getting close to Tomás as well. Tomás doesn't know how he ended up with not one but two teenage ducklings following him around but he's not mad about it. When Tomás and Luisa become engaged, Mirabel gifts him with an embroidered vest that he wears all the way up until the wedding.
The only problem Tomás has in regards to Antonio is that he's terrified of wild animals. Antonio himself is a perfectly sweet kid and Tomás is kind to him when he wants to socialize, but he'll be a little on edge if Parce decides to tag along. It likely takes years for him to get used to having the denizens of the jungle waltzing around the house, but he comes to trust Antonio to keep a handle on them.
Alma intimidates the hell out of him, especially since he's in a very Agustín-like position of probably not being her first choice to wed one of her grandchildren. But he'll prove himself to her in how devoted he is not only to Luisa but to Camilo as well, and eventually earn her blessing (to which he's both grateful and relieved).
Similarly, Isabela is a little tough on him at first and is the one to give him the third degree when she finds out he's involved with her baby sister. She recognizes he's kind of a marshmallow soon enough though and eases up on him after that. There's a cordial mutual fascination between the two and their skillsets, given Isa's ability to conjure trees and Tomás's ability to turn those trees into something new.
Tomás and Dolores are shaking hands over being exasperated by their goofy little brother Camilo, but beyond that their lowkey personalities mesh quite well. Oddly enough, between Dolores's Gift and Tomás's natural observational skills, the two tend to have enough information between them to quietly discuss goings-on around town.
Pepa and Félix are a little more removed from Tomás due to him being a cool color family addition, but as housemates there's still interactions to be had. Félix's extroversion brings a lot of energy Tomás doesn't always know what to do with and Pepa's storms take some time to adjust to, but all three of them readily agree on how much they care about Camilo and that's all that's really needed to keep the harmony.
Bruno keeps to himself more often than not and Tomás wholeheartedly understands. That said, once Tomás gets a good read on how Bruno operates and how best to approach him, they're able to have a rather polite rapport. The rats skeeve Tomás out a little but they're no big deal compared to things like jaguars and anacondas, thus Tomás can be convinced (by Mirabel and/or Camilo) to offer his talents and build little sets for Bruno's telenovelas.
Mariano is in the same boat as being a mundane marrying into a very non-mundane family, and with the added history of being casual friends beforehand Tomás ends up gravitating towards him as they adjust to their new lives as Madrigals. They, along with Camilo, end up becoming more or less the second generation parallels to the Madriguys that came before them - Tomás's Agustín to Mariano's Félix to Camilo's Bruno.

Part 2 will be coming shortly! Then, as I'm fairly certain it's already technically Week 3, the post for that week's prompt will follow sometime soon after.

Full Moon Music.
We’ve always featured darkness since our very first broadcast on Omega WUSB. By our fourth show, we came close in completing our first full-fledged darkness set in a more dis-organized era when we were still trying to figure ourselves out. Back then, ‘darkness’ meant any amount of well-known industrial, metal, and electronic acts with an evil, deviant, or negative tinge to it. Think Throbbing Gristle, Clock DVA, Whitehouse, Godflesh, NON, and etcetera. We finally achieved full force during a bonus summer broadcast (#21) and since then things evolved in how we did those shows. We’ve made a point in doing at least one but no more than two of these dark broadcasts per year, usually in the winter as it’s the best weather, and that’s not including the Halloween broadcasts we’ve done. That’s a whole other class in itself.
It wasn’t until November 2017 when I attended Hospital Productions’ 20th anniversary, a night I’ll never forget. It was the culmination of nine months of benefits and stay-at-home recovery from three life-saving shoulder surgeries. It felt so good being in my element in Brooklyn (Greenpoint) with all the industrialists, goth girls, and noise aficionados dressed in black. Ten hours of paying personal tributes to Dominick Fernow and his label made me realize there was more to look forward to. It’s something never experienced on Long Island, and don’t even get me started with what that “culture” consists of.
That event left a lasting impression on me. If the label had its’ magic on me with Cocaine Death, then I was totally mystified with its’ own showcase. Even everything surrounding it - the train rides, playlists, playbacks, the weather - felt significant to me. And then some. The following month, Omega WUSB opened up the winter broadcasting season / year with more Hospital Productions and Sacred Bones music to air. Both of those labels had their 20th and 10th label anniversaries respectively and we loved what they’ve released. Philip Best’s Alien Existence and a shipment of RRRecords’ cassettes and vinyl arrived at the residence; both which made me feel proud of myself. By Year Six, Omega WUSB was more focused in playing darkwave, synthwave, soundscapes, and even witch house. As the colder months progressed, I discovered a Brooklyn goth girl who followed me and liked my posts on the regular. She was that rare person I really identified with and gave me a serious run for my money like no other.
Through all the euphoric ups, heartbreaking downs, and greyscale steadies, the show must go on. The events of Hospital Productions and identification still surround me. They are a reminder of who I am, where I’m from, what I look forward to, and who I associate with. The darkness broadcasts still go strong and we look forward in doing them like you wouldn’t believe. By now, Omega WUSB has been more organized. Of all the different genres we play, we make it a point to do these dedicated darkness sets when the weather’s suitable and as long as the music’s current. Aside from that, we still run dedicated bonus (and even our one-and-only deluxe Leap Day) noise shows and we aim to make all of our other goth rock, black metal, classic industrial, minimal, and other midnight finds when and where applicable. All of our listeners know that organizing at least 15 different genres and making them all fit is a challenge.
This past winter, we aired one broadcast of dark electronics from Avon Terror Corps and the L.I.E.S. label, doom metal, no-tech, and some textural noise. Somehow we fell into the rabbit hole of darkwave, synthwave, minimal, and EBM and we’ve had enough for a great three-hour idea. With WUSB’s ethos of independent radio and our ethos of everything new, current, and relevant, we had a case to go off-the-board.
Here’s what I / we’ve been feeling and experiencing for the past four winters. This soundtrack supplements the pristine spectre of full moons and constellations in the clear frigid black skies, plus all the positive events that still stays with me make for a distinct spell I can call my own. No Wax Trax, no Bauhaus, The Cure, The Cramps, Siouxsie Sioux, or Depeche Mode. No doubt they’re all legends, but not every tracklist or mix has to be that way. Everything found here is current and on a different level. If at any time I need to get myself up, I’ll reach back to this and know I’ll come back to something I can call what’s mine.

hi there, the delusional anon again lol I'm really lighting candles hoping we can finally get the deleted scenes 🕯️
I really wanted to see Louis shooting Lestat and the whole scene they filmed with the first makeup, just out of curiosity. The Trial™, and the scene with louis in the church, killing the priest
and TC as the marquis is GENIUS !!!!!! The tvshow has already made so many references, I would like other actors to appear even for a second! Even the young fop actor (btw did you saw his interview on youtube with a fan?); and jokes aside, I have a lot of fun whenever someone says they would like to see Nicole Kidman in the show as Gabrielle, it's kind evil tbh BUT yet would be cool
I've already spent HOURS on your blog just looking at the deleted scenes, I don't understand why Warner Bros just doesn't release it
anyways, THANK YOU! love your blog 💕
I've already spent HOURS on your blog just looking at the deleted scenes, I don't understand why Warner Bros just doesn't release it anyways, THANK YOU! love your blog 💕
Aww thank you! 😍 That means a lot. I collected this stuff for ppl to enjoy, if Tumblr ever goes down and we lose this archive, I'll definitely be sad. It's too large for me to download 😂 So definitely save stuff for yourself.
Light your candles, Anon 🕯️, but don't hold your breath. Truly, if we were going to get deleted scenes from the '94 movie, the golden opportunities (the 10th and 20th anniversaries 😂) for that have passed. This year will be the 30th, can you believe it?? If anyone is connected to the powers that be, TELL PPL WE WANT THIS STUFF. I'm sure it exists somewhere.
I think those cut scenes could have been great, but I suspect, other than being cut for time, there were good reasons to cut them from a writing perspective.
They may have been too cheesy for what the movie was going for?
Or they might have slowed down the action or detracted from the story?
--- Louis doesn't shoot Lestat that night in the book; Lestat gets shot at the Theatre de Vampires (before it's called that) in the Vampire Lestat, so it's possible that it was filmed, and then cut from the IWTV '94 movie with the intention to include it properly in the sequel TVL (not that Lestat can't get shot twice! but still! Getting shot on stage in front of an audience rather than in a bedroom with no other witnesses is, debatably, more shocking).
I felt like there was a somewhat feverish pace with Lestat coming to Louis at his bedside, that scene went by pretty quickly, it made it more vibrant and precious. In the book, Louis had been in poor health and then ppl had bled him to try to "cure him of his madness," so Lestat really didn't have the luxury of waiting too much longer to turn him; Louis could have died 😭. And maybe the whole Louis-shooting-Lestat might've killed the mood Lestat was aiming for, which was seductively offering Louis the Dark Gift. Shooting Lestat might've been more than a little off-putting in that moment 😂 Do you really want to turn someone into your immortal companion after they've JUST SHOT YOU? It might not kill Lestat, but it would still hurt!
Tumblr media
[^X]
I mean I LOVE Tom!Lestat, and this is one of the few BTS pics we have of the Trial scene (you can see the theatre crypts behind him 😭)... it's charming to me bc I love that movie, but it might have been cut bc in a way it's more painful to excise the whole trial. Like barely seeing the shark in JAWS. With no trial, it would mean that Louis and Claudia had absolutely no chance; it was all up to Santiago's (or Armand's) whim 😭 Lestat wasn't even there to try to advocate for either Louis or Claudia (or maybe he WAS there, but locked in a cell somewhere and unable to help them!).
Tumblr media
and TC as the marquis is GENIUS !!!!!!
Right?? That could be amazing.
The tvshow has already made so many references, I would like other actors to appear even for a second!
I haven't heard of that happening... don't hold your breath there, either, I think they would have done it already if they intended to do so. My guess is that AMC really wants to do their own thing apart from the 1994 movie (other than rewriting a few scenes), so I don't think there will be any cameos in the future, but maybe I'm wrong!
Even the young fop actor (btw did you saw his interview on youtube with a fan?);
I didn't see the video, but I met that actor, Lee Scharfstein, IRL in NOLA in 2022, he was lovely!
and jokes aside, I have a lot of fun whenever someone says they would like to see Nicole Kidman in the show as Gabrielle, it's kind evil tbh BUT yet would be cool
That is kind of evil haha but Nicole has been a favorite of fanartists and roleplayers for years, that's not a hot take. If I had to choose Tom as the Marquis OR Nicole as Gabs... bc putting them together would be A LOT to ask... I think I'd prefer Tom, because of the deliciousness of having him play his own father... but we have a better chance of getting Nicole so I would LOOOOVE to have her as Gabs paired w/ Timothy Omundson as the Marquis.

Oh and BTW since you've read this far, I accepted the headcanon that the Marquis' name was Valere de Lioncourt, as per the legendary @gairid/ @vampchronfic 😭💕

"Biopics of massively famous musicians are rarely very good, often because they stumble at the question of whom exactly they’re being made for. Are you making a movie for the already initiated die-hard fans yearning to see the life and times of their hero reflected back at them in exacting detail? Or is your movie a welcome mat for novices, a breezy jukebox of greatest hits aimed at cultivating new generations of fans, goosing streaming tallies and catalog sales in the process? Most musician biopics never manage to resolve this tension, in part because they’re usually also serving a third master, namely the musician’s estate, which tends to hold its own, very specific ideas about on-screen depiction.
Bob Marley: One Love, the new movie about the late reggae superstar that’s produced by Marley’s widow, Rita, along with some of his children, is a biopic that does seem to know whom it’s for, which isn’t a point in its favor. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) and stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, who does his best with the role despite not really looking or sounding much like the real Marley. (Within the past four years Ben-Adir has played Malcolm X, Barack Obama, and Bob Marley, quite the triptych of historical figures.) Lashana Lynch plays Rita and steals the film in every scene she’s in, even if the movie’s script fails to elevate her character past the archetypical suffering-yet-supportive wife of a genius.
Rather than taking a cradle-to-grave approach to Marley’s life, One Love instead focuses on a single period of Marley’s career, his self-imposed exile to England in the aftermath of the 1976 attempt on his life at his home in Kingston, during which time he recorded Exodus, the 1977 LP that marked his full breakthrough into global superstardom. The film opens with the assassination attempt, after which we’re quickly whisked to London, where the film depicts Marley writing most of Exodus’ songs in a cloying series of “eureka!” moments that tend to populate movies of this kind. Snippets of Marley’s classic “Redemption Song” surface as a recurring musical motif in the film, and in one of the last scenes, we see Marley performing the song for his awestruck family in a sappy flourish that’s also anachronistic. (By most accounts, Marley didn’t write “Redemption Song” until 1979.) Periodically we’re treated to a series of flashbacks of the singer’s earlier life, a clichéd device that this movie could have used more of: Brief forays into Marley’s conversion to Rastafarianism are surprisingly well done, and a scene of a teenage Marley and the Wailing Wailers performing “Simmer Down” at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One is the best moment in the film.
One Love is an inspirational tale about a Great Man who used music to unite the world, one that reduces one of the most consequential and complicated artists of the 20th century to a walking fount of genial aphorisms, the guy who suggested we all get together and feel all right. As such, the film indulges a decadeslong public appetite for a particular imagining of Marley that his estate now seems depressingly eager to feed. It’s been 42 years since Marley died of a rare form of melanoma at age 36, and I’m not sure there’s a musician who’s more literally iconic: Go to any commercial district in any part of the world and within minutes you’ll find an opportunity to buy something bearing Marley’s likeness. In the United States, Marley has been a staple of dorm-room walls for generations: The casual and underinformed co-optation of Marley by American bro culture has even inspired a recurring meme in which Marley’s name is erroneously affixed to an image of Jimi Hendrix.
To a certain brand of musical cynic, Marley has become the embodiment of a musician whom people own posters and T-shirts of but don’t actually listen to, which isn’t totally fair to most of the owners of those posters and T-shirts. Some of Marley’s music is still enormously popular: His 1984 greatest hits compilation Legend is currently enjoying its 820th week on the Billboard 200, a position it will likely maintain for the foreseeable future given One Love’s early, strikingly robust box-office projections. The only album that’s spent longer on the chart is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
But in the pop-cultural imagination, Legend has completely eclipsed everything else Marley ever released. The album has sold more than 15 million copies in the United States alone, while no other Marley LP has sold even 1 million stateside. From a purely mathematical standpoint, this would indicate that for many fans, Legend is the first and only Marley album they’ll ever listen to. I’m not sure there’s another greatest hits compilation that has played such an outsize role in the public definition of an artist.
Legend is a fine little collection, but the idea that it’s some sort of one-stop synopsis of Marley’s career is absurd. For starters, 10 of its 14 tracks date from the period of 1977–80, a four-year time frame that represents the height of Marley’s global popularity but is a relatively minuscule cross section of a staggeringly prolific, nearly two-decade-long recording career. (Five of Exodus’ 10 tracks are included on Legend, which I suspect is one reason that One Love is so invested in the album’s significance.)
This period also coincides with a time when Marley’s music seemed to take a step back from revolutionary politics, a tack that may have been driven at least in part by the aforementioned assassination attempt. The Marley canonized on Legend is not the Marley who sang “I feel like bombin’ a church/ Now that you know that the preacher is lyin’ ” or who called for “burnin’ and a-lootin’ tonight … burnin’ all illusion tonight” or declared that “Rasta don’t work for no CIA.” The dominance of Legend in the U.S. is particularly striking when one considers that Marley’s highest-selling album in this country during his lifetime was 1976’s Rastaman Vibration, which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and includes such overtly political tracks as “Crazy Baldhead,” “Rat Race,” and “War.” Legend doesn’t include a single track from Rastaman Vibration, instead opting for romantic fare like “Is This Love” and “Waiting in Vain” and feel-good anthems like “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Jamming.” (For an excellent deep dive into the history and legacy of Legend, I recommend this article from the Ringer earlier this week.)
One Day’s Director Has No Regrets About the Movie’s Controversial Ending
Legend’s preeminence has helped turn Marley into the musical equivalent of a tourist destination, at which One Love is just one more cozy attraction. This is worse than a shame, because the real Bob Marley was one of the most remarkable musical talents of the 20th century. As a songwriter, he was so prolific that music seemed to pour out of him, a quality that has sometimes led to a naturalization of his gifts that veers into exoticizing primitivism. (One Love certainly partakes in this.) But rather than being some carefree savant, Marley was a fiercely disciplined and ambitious artist from the very beginning. He wrote and recorded his first single, “Judge Not,” in 1962 at the age of 16, and it remains an astonishing debut, an effortlessly catchy melody sung by a voice that sounds both nervous and supremely confident in a way that only a teenager can manage.
By the time he signed to Island Records in 1972 and began his ascent to international superstardom, Marley had already written a lifetime’s worth of great songs. He had a preternatural ear for hooks and crafted songs that were ready-made hit records, three-minute gems of perfectly crystalized musical ideas. As a singer, his indelible tenor rasp and thrillingly improvisational style were the byproducts of an extraordinarily well-honed sense of intonation and time. And during the 1970s, he fronted what might have been the best band on the face of the earth, grounded in the peerless rhythm section of drummer Carlton Barrett and bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett, the latter of whom died earlier this month at age 77. (Aston’s son and namesake, an accomplished musician in his own right, plays his father in the film.)
One Love doesn’t know how to begin exploring this artist and his art in any way that even begins to be interesting. Instead it just feeds back the same sanitized and saccharine idea of Bob Marley to the same audience who has been eating that up for generations. It’s a movie about a poster. Over the end credits of One Love, archival performance clips of Marley flash onto the screen, and for a few moments we’re treated to sounds and images that are infinitely more magnetic and thrillingly alive than anything we’ve seen over the preceding 100-ish minutes. That Bob Marley, and the extraordinary body of music he left behind, is still out there for those who go listening for it, but this movie isn’t where you’ll find him."

Callaghan Murphy Burke | 24 I 5'8 | September 20th
Tumblr media
Personality:
Cal is a smart man. A very smart and very nervous man. Having suffered with anxiety since he was quite young, Cal has done everything he can to work on his mental health. Therapy. Medication. Self medication. There’s been a few different diagnoses thrown his way. Anxiety and depression for starters, OCD later on. He also suffers from an extensive stutter that he’s done everything he can to work on. You can tell when he is growing tired or anxious when it starts to affect him more and more.
He’s not just his mental illnesses, though. Of course he isn’t. He’s very interested in medicine, even going to college to study to become a surgeon the moment he graduated from high school. After some struggles during his classwork, Cal had decided to take a less upsetting route; law school. Okay, it’s upsetting in a different way, but at least he’s no longer dealing with the intrusive thoughts that come about with helping patients.
Despite his nervous disposition, Cal has a dry wit and a subtle sense of humor that he shares with those he trusts. He enjoys debates and can be surprisingly strong when defending his viewpoints. His friends appreciate his loyalty and the thoughtful advice he often provides, even if his anxiety sometimes makes social interactions difficult.
Backstory:
Raised in a shut off community in Ireland, Cal has always had a very volatile relationship with his parents and his religion. Everything that wasn’t “normal” to his parents about his personality and habits was explained away by the influence of the devil. He was yelled at, treated poorly by, and frequently sent off to pray for hours at a time by his parents. The only thing that made living there worth it was his two sisters, Cirean and Larkin.
He’s suffered with intrusive thoughts pretty much all his life, the usual compulsions to have the correct number of ice cubes in his drinks, to check and recheck and re-recheck the locks on his doors. The intrusive thoughts that haunt him most of all are the compulsions he gets to harm himself and others.
Cal's relationship with his parents and their strict religious views left him with a complicated view of faith. He often questions and struggles with the beliefs he was raised with, seeking a more personal and less judgmental spirituality. This inner conflict sometimes fuels his anxiety but also drives him to be more open-minded and accepting of others' differences.
Motivations and Goals:
Cal’s primary motivation is to find a balance between his mental health and his career aspirations. He hopes to become a successful lawyer, using his intelligence and empathy to help others navigate the complexities of the legal system. On a personal level, he aims to create a life where he feels safe and accepted, away from the oppressive environment of his childhood. Building strong, supportive relationships, especially with his sisters, is also a key goal for him.
Likes:
His sisters
Reading and studying
Quiet time
Cheesy medical dramas
Dislikes:
Extreme Christianity
Loud sounds
Unpredictable and spontaneous situations
Judgment
Appearance:
Cal is an average height black man with a dark brown afro, brown eyes, and a few moles scattered across his face. He dresses comfortably but stylishly, usually in earth tones. He wears glasses as he is nearsighted. He has a rectangular body shape.
