The Moon played hide and seek with Mars this morning.

In what's known as an "occultation," the Moon came directly between Earth and Mars on the wee hours of January 31st, when it blocked out the Red Planet from 12:35am to 1:24am EST.

Heavy clouds in Florida all but ruined the disappearance of Mars, but clear skies abounded when it returned 40 minutes later, providing awesome views when Mars reappeared.

Mars itself is not moving in these pictures. My telescope had it centered, and all the apparent motion comes from the Moon, which orbits counterclockwise around the Earth about 14.5 degrees every day (about 1.5 fists to the left held out at arm's length). Noticing the motion of the Moon is always a challenge unless you pinpoint a nearby star and watch it all night - or if it blocks out a planet!

Astronomy is neat. Always something going on out there!

The Moon passed very close to Mars last night

For this gif, I centered the close-ups on Mars (and exaggerated the planet’s brightness to bring it out better) but since I don’t know how to correct for Earth’s rotation without using fixed stars for guides, the result makes it look like the Moon bounced off Mars and back out of frame :-)

Other parts of the country got to see an actual occultation while for me it was a close pass which at least doesn’t mean I’m posting a picture of a full moon swearing Mars is being blocked by it

The frames where Mars is closest to the Moon, the planet was so close I couldn’t see it unaided as it was lost in the Moon’s glare

And like solar and lunar eclipses, it was a good opportunity to be reminded that the Moon does, in fact, move and is not simply seemingly carried across the sky by Earth’s rotation

DISCLOSURE: All the pictures were taken with a simple point&shoot camera with 12x optical zoom. The frames are all composites because Mars - while bright for a “star” - is still very dim compared to the glare of the Moon so I took other pictures where I overexposed the Moon to bring Mars out and then copy/pasted that brighter Mars to the frames taken with best bringing out the Moon in mind. The contrast on the Moon was also fiddled with to better bring out its details

You can't automatically put witches or witchcraft in the 12th house. I see some astrologers do that and I think it's an issue of not understanding the principals and adopting what they see in the ancient books without critical thought. The traditional sources would have witches in the 12th because it's the house of the bad daimon, which can show hidden enemies and spiritual attacks. William Lilly, for example, would look at it in horary astrology if the querent believed they had been bewitched or something of the sort. But witchcraft isn't always about hexing someone. If I had to put witchcraft in a house it would be the 3rd, the Goddess, as a magical/spiritual/religious practice. If you're a witch yourself you'll be looking at the 12th to see your hidden enemies, not yourself or your practice, you have no power in the 12th. And if you're actually hexing people, you'll look for them and that practice in the 6th.

The problem here is not thinking through why something was said and why things are assigned to the houses that they are. The houses are supposed to be understood in trios, the four angular triads. The 1st, the 2nd and the 12th form the first angular triad, with an angular, a succedent and a cadent house. Angular houses are where there's action, it's a turning point, where planets have power and can do things. Succedent houses are not yet angular, they represent things that support the angle. Cadent houses are about losing the power of the angle, it's where things fall, get slow and have no power. The 1st is the angle of the ascendant, the place in the sky where things were rising at the time of birth, so it represents the native themselves, who was also just rising in the world, and the basic rule is as above so it is below. The succedent house from it (the 2nd) is about what comes to the native, things that support it, and all succedent houses have a lot to do with material things. The cadent place from the native is the 12th, where the native falls, where they lose power or control, where they can be at the mercy of others. So, the 6th will be the 7th's cadent, the other's fall, where the other loses power, that's why we see there the signification of slaves or servants and small domesticated animals in the ancient sources. And generally, someone who got hexed by you is subjugated in a sense that fits best the symbolism of the 6th house of bad fortune.

I find it interesting that this is also a bad house for the native and this is probably not trivial. I don't know that much about magic, but from what I see, I think most magical traditions consider the link created between the two people involved in this as dangerous for the person casting the spell too, like war is dangerous and costly for both sides. If you consider all the other significations as well, they're costly, energetically or materially.

I generally love seeing a Gemini Mars in a birth chart - but whenever these natives have Mercury or Venus (esoteric ruler of Gemini) placed in the 12th house or in a harsh aspect to Neptune, they seem to get so easily lost in life. Both their drive and their communication skills are hindered. They need to do a lot of inner healing and channel their energy into specific ventures based on how Mercury, Venus, and Mars are placed and aspected in the chart.

Most Leo Suns are here to heal themselves first and then guide others into the light. They're an inspiration and someone who other people can rely on, even when they have no one else. This is not an easy task and the birth chart will show the best way to go about this journey.

An evolved Gemini Rising is the best at breaking down barriers and letting love pour into other people's lives. They're great at uniting people, and some of the wisest.

An evolved Aquarius Rising is the one to kick-start spiritual transformations in others. They're at their peak when consciously cooperating with others for a greater cause.

An evolved Virgo Moon will be able to reconnect Soul and Matter together. Seeing things through, and compassionately understanding others.

A Capricorn Saturn will be put through so much throughout their lives. Ultimately, they're asked to recognize that even in the hardest of situations they still do have a choice - and should make their decision wisely.

Venus in Taurus natives are the best at perceiving energy through the material form. This may sound a little confusing, but to put it simply they're particularly sensitive to the energy expressed by both the people and objects around them.

Venus in Aquarius. I'm tired to hear everyone call you cold and emotionless. What the actual f. Those with this placement are actually the best at perceiving and seeing the different connections between people. They see the interconnection of it all.
