Fun JTTW Text Reference for Artists

I've written at length about Sun Wukong's golden headband (here, here, here, and here). Anyone who has read the novel will know that it is used to rein in Monkey's unruly behavior through the application of pain. Such events have been portrayed by artists like Chen Huiguan in his Newly Illustrated and Complete Journey to the West (Chen Huiguan Xinhui Quanben Xiyouji, 陈惠冠新绘全本西游记, 2001) and Tianwaitang in his piece Tripitaka's Curse (2010).

But I've never seen someone depict the instance with the greatest potential for an everlasting visual impact. In chapter 27, Tripitaka angrily recites the tightening spell 20 times to punish Monkey for killing what he thought was an innocent woman (it wasn't). This causes our hero's head to deform like a cartoon character!

The sight so frightened the Tang Monk that he fell from his horse. Lying on the road, he did not speak another word except to recite the Tight-Fillet Spell back and forth exactly twenty times. Alas, poor Pilgrim's head was reduced to an hourglass-shaped gourd! As the pain was truly unbearable, he had to roll up to the Tang Monk and plead, "Master, please don't recite anymore. Say what you have to say" (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 2, p. 23) 唐僧一見，驚下馬來，睡在路傍，更無二話，只是把緊箍兒咒顛倒足足念了二十遍。可憐把個行者頭勒得似個亞腰兒葫蘆，十分疼痛難忍，滾將來哀告道：「師父莫念了，有甚話說了罷。」

The original Chinese lists the "double-waisted" calabash gourd (yayao'er hulu, 亞腰兒葫蘆). I hope this gives artists an idea of what Wukong's head would look like.

I've previously noted how the novel describes Sun Wukong as an actual monkey, and it's because of this that the headband would likely rest on his eye orbits. I imagine his head being squeezed into the shape of a calabash gourd would make his eyes comically (or grotesquely) bulge, too.

I will never get over MK gagging in Calabash when Mei says she's in love with him 😂 first of all, it's hilarious, but it's also just so refreshing to have a male/female pair of main characters that draw a hard and fast line at being strictly platonic. It doesn't mean they love each other any less, in fact they'd absolutely die for each other, but as friends instead of significant others. It's just so nice to see!

ok so @peanut-with-wifi-access requested i liveblog lmk (coming from a ninjago fan) so here are my thoughts so far! im currently on s1 ep5 so heres a recap of my thoughts

starting off with ep 3 coming home! now if i had a nickel for every green coloured lego character biologically related to dragons... anyway i loved this episode, love mei! cant wait to see more of her and her heritage because that is reeeallly interesting

ok ep 4 noodles or death! so this is the bitch who robbed us of spider legged harumi!!! jokes but judging off the ending and the title of the second lmk special i know she'll be making a return and im really excited! she seems like a fun villain

ep 5 calabash! can i first start off by saying THANK YOU for not pushing mei and mk to be together i really appreciate how not every girl and guy need to be automatically shipped! also love how MK puked at the thought of it for a second i thought this was going in another direction and i wanted to cry (ninjago fans ifykyk) i really do see them as the siblings ever i love their dynamic sm

also these twins are so fun hope they make a reappearance! also what does the calabash do exactly? just trap people like is there a benefit???

anyway i was told it would get a lot darker so um definitely kinda scared! but so far im enjoying the silly adventures also cant wait to meet the macaque guy seems like a fan favourite

Cold.

It's so cold.. That's all he could feel. He shouldn't be affected by this, right? He's immortal. He can't die. So, how... How did that spell hit him? How did it cause his skin to burn at the ice? This.. Shouldn't be possible..!

He looks up, shaking. Through his frosted vision, he can see her. Princess Pinnidae of the Ripple Kingdom. Someone who looked so similar to her, yet so different. Contrasting Nautilus, she had long hair that sways like ocean waves. Yet, now... Her appearance made him freeze.

Clutched into her pale hands was a wand he never had seen before. Pale blue, shaped like a mirage of shells. The top one held 7 horns, all lighting up to signify another attack. Her long hair speckled with ice crystals, her arms growing from a pale, desaturated tan to a icy blue. Her eyes glowed an ominous white as her breath released like a cloud. It was like the wand itself was stealing all the warmth she had on her body.

Freezing her bit by bit every time she used it.

Cucumber forced himself up, barely able to keep himself from slipping. Ice blisters his skin as he tries to focus on the threat at hand. Calabash's voice screeched through the firing of magic. "Pinnidae, stop!! You're freezing, you need to put that wand down!!" Beeping. A warning. No, no, no, wait-!!

He sprints away from the line of fire, but that wasn't enough. It strikes like an arrow, then the line of light explodes into a harsh blizzard that seeps the warmth of everything around it. It hurts. But, he can't give up. There must be a way to stop this..!

Panic seeps in when he hears the beeping again, this time using a shield. It barely held on as the ice cracked and chipped the barrier, threatening to turn him into a rabbit popsicle. He can't feel his hands or legs, yet he still holds his grip on his staff. "P.. Pinnidae.." He strained out.

"Princess, you.. You can't keep this up.. You're freezing everything.. Your comrade has been knocked out by that wand's power. You have to let go of it..!" It stings so much, like needles stabbing into his body. If he wasn't immortal, he doubts he'd be able to withstand this power as well as he currently has. With the burning of fire magic, he tries to keep himself warm enough to move. Another warning. This time, he dashes. He disappeared in a flick of shadow before the spell could be cast. He ignores the wind and ice that froze his hands as he points his wand at Pinnidae, ready to shoot a fire spell-

Optimism, Cucumber!

He halts. No, she's.. She looks so..

The freezing princess begins to turn around, now the wand pointing at him. A warning echoes through the snow. He can't move his legs. Run!

The wand is lighting up. The cold is growing.

Move!

It's getting brighter. He sees her very breath be stolen by the wand.

Run away!

His own wand burns, the warmth building. No, he can't..!

Hurry!

He choked out a sob, seeing the final horn light up. It's going to strike.

FIRE IT!

He shut his eyes. He felt his hands sizzle, and a sharp blast of fire zips out from his wand, right when she lets out the chilling arrow of ice. He hears the attack hit and then feels the cruel spell hit him spot on. He couldn't hear himself scream. It zapped everything numb before he felt nothing but needles. Excruciating, then it all went dark. The sound of falling, something caving in below them. Making impact onto the rock and stone below them.

He can't move. He can't feel anything. Yet, it all just hurts. A strained sob escaped his frozen lips, trying to force himself up.

Nothing. He can't.

Footsteps rushing to in front of him. A pause. "Pinnidae..?" He hears the hero call out.

No answer.

It made him grow a pit in his stomach. Dread crawled over his back, fear that he had done.. this. He..

He killed her..

The unsheathe of a sword. Footsteps slowly come in before stopping to bear witness at the pathetically frozen wizard. He didn't need to look up to know what's going to happen.

"W.. Wait-..!!"

A sudden sharp pain at his back. He let out a choked shriek. The weight of the sword grew heavier as his vision darkens and blurs. The fading of his fingers and his cloak.

I'm sorry...

That's all he could think before he vanished back into the purple stone.

I’ve been watching the show 《消失的孩子》 with friends recently (don’t worry, no spoilers). There is a puppy named 呼噜/Hulu. 呼噜 is the sound you make when you snore (and 打呼噜 means to snore). My friends don’t speak Chinese and rely on the English subtitles, so I explained to them what the puppy’s name means. One friend pointed out the similarity to the streaming service Hulu. We started wondering if there was any connection.

According to Wikipedia, the name Hulu is actually taken from 葫芦 and also kind of 互录. I feel like they chose the name Hulu first and then came up with 互录 like a backronym-type situation. Anyway, 葫芦 is a type of gourd. I most associate it with...葫芦娃/Huluwa! Aren’t these little guys cute? They are from a famous Chinese cartoon. I have not seen it myself (yet), but I’ve seen references to it.
