I finally gave Five his signature tongue! 🥰😋

Five is one of the male reticulated giraffes under the care of the zoo I volunteer at. He is my favorite sweet boy and I wanted my plushie to match him when I visit as a guest.

Five suffered a jaw injury when he was a juvenile from tripping/falling, so his tongue hangs out of his mouth all the time. Luckily he still has full function of his tongue (still prehensile) and is able to eat normally like the other giraffes.

Unfortunately, because of their long necks, facial and jaw injuries from falls and other occurrences are fairly common, especially among young giraffes.

This is why setting up hay feeders properly and following AZA guidelines for anesthesia are very important in the prevention of mandible fractures in giraffes in human care :)
