curious about your opinions on Assassination Nation. I really loved it, especially the transfem character.

maybe i sounded a bit harsh in how i phrased it in the tags (i oughta go back and look again), because i did enjoy watching that film

i thought it was a good pulse check of both the state of america and the state of movies, in the sense that it is very much doing what it does well, and what it was doing was gathering a lot of popular tropes and visual shorthands to get into something that might be a difficult sell

however, from memory (it's been hm. 4 years since ive seen it maybe, so this won't be the most detailed of thoughts) its structure did get quite messy in service of trying to get the viewer where it wanted us to go, with an emphasis somewhat on a euphoria-esque sheen over everything that took me out of the emotional stakes

i should say instead maybe that this is a fun movie! obviously loosely in the style of "if you like the purge" and it's heavily referencing the du jour styles and interests of potentially a youngish mainstream audience, and using that get in some feminism and transfeminism and good old standard revenge porn

i think im probably not the target audience for it, at its most basic. from memory (again) i remember being left with a niggling that it could have been more if it wasn't going for "cool" all the time, but not a dissatisfaction on the whole. sort of a one-and-done deal for me, movie-wise, that absolutely i originally only watched to see a trans girl beat shit up (and i would like to specify to anyone on the fence, that she does, so even just for that! props!)

but i liked what it wanted to do, and yeah, if you're feeling like the world is bleak, why not tune in to watch a few girls with weaponry fuck up suburbia
