Don't mind me just eating this up :)
I know I originally said in a comment at some point about how annoying the Logan war got (think it was in that post asking why we all suddenly backed off) but now I just find your posts humoring it's like "THIS LITTLE GODDAMN PIECE OF SHIT-" and it's the most innocent picture of Logan.
Love seeing it nowadays (cuz it's funny), but you have a good point that he hasn't furthered the story yet but I feel like Red might change that soon. Hopefully. Also how we haven't had his backstory but that also might change too (we've got a hint in one episode where they fought his bullies, something about how his parents didn't want him and he fact that we've only seen his grandparents but not his actual parents says something....)
Anyways something I need to ask you! What are your opinions on the others, what you like about them or dislike, favorite moments and what not. I'm curious!
Sorry this may have been long!
SEE NOW YOU GUYS ARE GETTING MY HUMOR , THIS ACTUALLY MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!! THANK UUUUU A LOT
also UR SO GREAT FOR THE QUESTION YOU ASKED!! I love talking about everyone else
Iâll assess them in order of: ashlyn, aiden, taylor, tyler, ben (not by order of how much I like them or anything btw). Some sections are longer than others because Iâm bias BUT ALSO BECAUSE I got tired of typing and realized there was wayyy tm to read. Sorry!!!! if you donât wanna read all this I put a short summary all the way on the bottom + feel free to me ask me specific questions ! now let me talk your ear off
ASHLYN:
I really like ashlyn because she has the most potential out of everyone (and thatâs not to say the other characters arenât deep, because thatâs the opposite of true but bae is the whole reason weâre here). I think sheâs also really relatable in the sense that she doesnât like interacting with people but she can easily take the leadership role when needed. like okay queen I see you. also I really enjoy the fact Red made her dislike aiden at first even though they have a side romance plot going rn. bc thatâs how it wouldâve been if they were real. ash would not just become chatty out of no where and fall head over heels for him. and I really appreciate the slowburn. Ashlynâs also higher on my favorites list because Iâm bias and we have the same hair length đŁ usually when characters have long hair, authors tend to let their hair flow a lot, but red put ts in braids đ and ask anyone with long hair like that, their hair is up 99% of the time bc itâs annoying, hot, and (personally) GRABS ONTO EVERYTHING LIKE ITS A THIRD HAND. I have a lot of headcannons for ash just based on small character designs / aspects that not a lot of people really think about. Sheâs so interesting and I really just love her. And since I have positives, Iâll give one negative about her. In the beginning, Ashlyn was really hesitant to tell the group anything. I understand where she was coming from, and given Tylerâs reaction, I donât blame her for keeping things to herself. But mannnn ts was so frustrating sometimes. itâs ok tho bc all good stories stress you out.
AIDEN:
omg guys itâs my favorite ever. I know aidens really popular already so Iâll try not to rant on about him forever but hes just the best đŁ but mans really does not gaf EVERR.
now I could rant on and on about how silly Aiden is and why heâs so misunderstood as a character, because heâs not crazy like at all and if anything heâs one of the smartest characters in sbg, but Iâll save if for a better time. Instead I wanna talk about how observant he is of Ben and ashlyn.
itâs cropping weridly, sorry. but aidenâs eyes are always watching the ones he cares about most. I feel like this has to do with the fact Ben cannot voice his concerns/opinions so aiden always has to glance at him to make sure heâs not missing any important signal. But I also think it has to do with his childhood (I donât have fast pass or anything this is just based off of theories/analysis based on his character bc I do that a lot đ¤). Anyways, he has a specific way of comforting people that I think itâs rlly niche. He uses his hands and gets the person what he thinks they need. Like in the attached images he gets ashlyn fabric to squeeze and distracts her with light conversation, and he immediately offers to take a walk with Ben and get some fresh air. If a person refuses or asks him for space, he immediately obeys and doesnât question their decision. Heâs very trusting and understanding. He gives people room to make mistakes and gives them room to ask for help. Iâm mainly bringing this up because it ties back to something Iâm gonna talk about in Taylorâs section. I just think that this detail is so important to his character and we always brush over it. I donât wanna say he doesnât like physical touch, bc heâs always touching everything around him, but I like to think his main love language is acts of service. When you really look at it, his actions speak a lot louder than his bickering and it really helps display how much each character means to him individually. what elseee. Heâs able to quickly adjust and assess situations (like when he attacked the phantom or pulled up ashlyn in the bus). Heâs very quick to his feet and always needs to be interacting with something to keep his hands busy. Aiden just really donât gaf 99% of the time (unless itâs Ben / ashlyn) and honestly thatâs why I like him. He doesnât take anything seriously or personally. clap it up for my hb. Also I notice the sbg fandom has a habit of doing it with everyone, but I feel like Aiden is always reduced to his impulsive behaviors and âcrazy kidâ persona. please guys. look deeper into Aiden Clark. Instead of wasting your energy trying to defend a NERDY FREAK like Logan fields, you should study more on Aiden Clark and his complex character.
yes. do that. rn. You want to so badly. I know you do. Do it. Go reread sbg and focus on Aiden. wowwww. I know you want to. (Iâm hypnotizing you btw) Or just ask me I can talk about Aiden (or really any character) alll day long. Ask me anything about anyone and Iâll tell you what I think with proof and evidence. yes. I just need to cut it short because I have to talk about everyone else to. But study Aiden Clark. do it. really. really. Right now. Go. Go. Now. PLUS Aidenâs probably the least likely to die because heâs to cool for that + heâs better than death and injury. YAAA!!! MAKE AIDEN CLARK UR FAV BC YOULL BE SAFE FROM ANGST đ
only thing I donât like about Aiden gotta be his fashion sense sometimes (usually beginning S1). like WHAT R U WEARING MAN???? đ
TAYLOR:
okay now let me talk about my shnukums Taylor. I love her a lot but her and Tyler had very different childhoods regardless of the fact they were in the same situation.
We donât know a lot about Taylorâs version of growing up, so a lot of the details are vague but everything I say is based off of observations and analyses I have personally made, so please take everything I say about Taylorâs backstory with a grain of salt and understand that no matter what, both twins were majorly affected by the passing of their father and illness of their mother.
At first i thought of Taylor was the more lucky one out of Tyler and Taylor when it came to their childhood. Yes she struggled, I knew that, but Tyler was under a lot of stress. But thatâs when I realized that she suffered just as much. Although she didnât need to sacrifice herself to help her family survive, like Tyler did, she went though the most loss. She lost her mother, father, and brother all overnight. One second they were all happy together and the next she was all alone. Physically, her mother and brother were still there, but they were both shells. Her mother isolated by grief and her brother isolated by responsibility. She was all alone. Yes Tyler did his best to support her, but at the end of the day, there wasnât much he could do to change the situation. Taylor suffered a lot, and since people mostly focus on Tyler, we never really see Taylorâs POV of it all.
Now her backstory leads me into the fact Taylor is the most socially smart character in sbg. She is also the most observant and supportive. This is not to say others arenât observant/supportive, like Aiden for an example, but she does it much differently. I would attach a picture here but Iâm close to maxing out the photo limit and I want to save it for later.
Taylor is very good at reading the emotions of other characters. She is also very observant. Taylor is often the first to notice when a charater is uncomfortable, panicked, or harmed. For an example, sheâs the first to notice Ashlynâs fear back at the house. Unlike Aiden, Taylor is able to verbally let people know she is there for them. She comforts them through words and physical affection. Taylor is usually aware of how much support someone is in need of and the best way to display it for them specifically. For an example when Logan was getting bullied, she defended him against Tylerâs mean words and held his shoulder for reassurance. This same tactic would not work for ashlyn, and Taylor is aware of that. So, when ashlyn broke down about the struggles of being leader, Taylor comforted her through words and reassured her fears. Taylor opened up a space for ashlyn to be scared and share her burden. She was able to do all of this in only a couple of moments. This skills also becomes a werid quirk when she is able to sense Tylerâs condition in the hospital, but maybe that was just twin senses? đ¤ˇââď¸ idk
Taylor is also very aware of everyone around her. We know that she is very social and has a lot of friends and connections, but she also educates herself on the people she doesnât interact with. Even if she doesnât know a lot, she makes sure to acknowledge their presence at the very least.
What does her ability to read emotion have to do with her childhood? Well, Taylor basically lived with a shell of a family. Tyler was under constant stress, which made him prone to outbursts. Her mother was disabled by grief. Taylor was in a situation that made her feel like she had to take care of her family mentally. It was, to her, the least she could do. So, she was mentally mature from a very young age. Although having to hold the burdens of others constantly is very unhealthy, Iâm not sure if sheâll crack because of it.
Taylor being very social and having a lot of friends is also another example of how sheâs different from Tyler and how their shared childhood affected them differently. Tyler saw people as distractions while Taylor sees them as her means to keep living. Taylor lives off of other peoples energy, and she maintains the energy of other people by being a supportive beam for them. This is also why Iâm okay with Taylor being shipped with others. Sheâs use to being around people and can form close bonds with others while still only viewing them as friends. Tyler cannot do the same. Taylor is in a position where she can expand her horizons into romantic relations if she was interested in doing so. Thatâs why I feel as though itâs okay (if that doesnât make sense Iâll explain it again, but I tried to condense it down)
Something I donât like about Taylor is that we havenât gotten to see her brain in action yet. We know sheâs the president of the robotics club , but we havenât had the chance to see her charater support the story in any other way but socially and mentally. The story is only at 60 episodes though, and Iâm sure we will see it eventually. Im just impatient and want to see women in STEM shine đŁđŁ I wish I could talk about her more, but we barely know anything about Taylor as of right now. I will say itâs interesting how she told her and Tylerâs backstory, but only talked about how Tyler was affected and not herself. Interesting⌠I hope we learn more about her experiences and I hope Iâm right đ also CAN WE TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE HOW PRETTY SHE IS??? UGHH I LOVE HER SMM
TYLER:
I feel like Tyler has been the topic of discussion for the past couple of months because his backstory was revealed and the end of S1 / beginning of S2 was all about him and his past, so I donât have a lot to say that I havenât already said. but I do really like Tyler. At first when he was in his jock era I was very , oh! about him. but heâs actually warmed up to me sooooo much since then. heâs so goofy I just want more interactions between him and Aiden. I think I good place to start is how much I HATE people shipping him with other members of the main cast. I talked about it a little in Taylorâs section, but him and Taylor had very different childhoods. Again, Iâm not saying their fatherâs death and motherâs illness was not hard on the both of them, but Tyler was under a lot of pressure too. We know he isolated himself harshly, and stopped having fun all together. The way I look at it, everything, including living day-to-day, became a chore for Tyler. Ever since he was a little kid. His dadâs death changed his entire world overnight. He had to learn how to physically and mentally support everyone important to him, because if he couldnât no one else would. Tyler had to learn everything about living life by himself as a baby just so everyone else could survive. He stopped having fun. Little kids find fun in everything. Tyler stopped himself from finding it. He didnât do anything for himself anymore. He was almost like a empty shell doing automatic tasks so that his sister and mother could have space to grow, heal, and live. In a sense, it was self sacrifice (which he attempts again when he tells the group to leave him behind)
So when Taylor tells us that the main cast started to become an extension of the family he sacrificed himself for, itâs so heavy on his character. Especially because for once in a long time he started relating his âfamilyâ back to joy and fun, not just safety and survival. Thatâs why it bothers me when people ship him with others. Itâs so werid to imply heâd date any of the main cast when he sees them as his family. consider them blood-siblings if you gotta, but just stop shipping them. PLEAASSSSEEEEEEEEEEE. otherwise Iâll eat your dog. thanks! also him being friends with the main cast at all is such a huge step for him. I donât think Tyler has time to get involved with romantic relationships when he believes friends are a distraction. I know a lot of people go to romance when they want to express how strong a connection is between two characters, but you guys are forgetting that Tyler considering everyone as his friends is sooooo much more complex and deep compared to (for an example) Logan saying he considers everyone his friend. ANYWAYS ENOUGHHH!!! letâs move on.
I also wanna talk about this scene (I was to lazy to go find the original scene so the flashback is all you get). I never really realized how much ashlyn ordering Tyler around mustâve affected him. He literally spent his whole life making decisions and taking leadership and all of a sudden some random lil girl is over here telling him to stfu and sit his ass down. I would imagine as mad as he was, he probably felt a least a bit of relief. For once the responsibility wasnât on him, at least not only on him. He could share his burden with others, and he wasnât suffocated by being responsible for the lives of everyone else. We see this same struggle affect ashlyn, as she feels like being leader strangles her with the weight of guilt, paranoia, and responsibility. Imagine if Tyler had been the one to bare that weight after everything heâs already been through? he wouldâve cracked, whether we like it or not. so letâs clap it up for ashlyn rq!!! yasss girl đ I know Iâm rambling a lot about tyler but I know a lot about him and want to talkkk đŁ but here is my last point: Tylerâs coping mechanism to the unknown and things that confuse him is denial. Just like his mother đ¤Żđ¤Żđ¤Żđ¤Żđ¤Ż
woww! do you guys remember when Tyler thought this whole thing was a joke? me too! he wouldâve never thought this silly prank would almost kill him. Tylerâs mom probably thought her husbandâs illness wouldnât kill him either. oops! đ (Iâm going kms). sorry. my point is they both refused to believe it happened (although his momâs denial may have been more of a trauma response while his was just to help him cope). Even with evidence, they both couldnât understand what had happened to them and pretending nothing was wrong. Tyler saw the picture of the phantomâs shadow and brushed it off to technology he couldnât understand yet. he felt more comfortable with not knowing how technology worked rather than not knowing if he was in danger. his mother is similar. She couldnât understand and cope with the death of her husband, even though he died in front of her. She felt more comfortable not understanding why he was late from work than understanding he was dead and gone. Guess it runs in the family? đ¤ˇââď¸ and since these are all things I like about his character, I will tell you what I donât like. THAT STUPID ASS JOCK ATTUIDE FROM S1. okay I didnât hate it, and it fit him sometimes, and I kinda miss it sometimes, but heâs like 5â5 and a stick, he is not beating no oneâs ass đ respectfully. now he could probably rock me but heâs matured a bit since S1 so itâs different. Tylerâs not even my favorite idk why I talked about him sm , especially when I held off on talking about Aiden because I didnât want to say to much đ¤Śââď¸ whatever
BEN:
I have a lot to say about Benny boy, especially because he is SOOOOOO mischaraterized. Now I wonât go crazy like I did for the twins because Iâm thinking about making a separate post just about Ben (maybe.. maybe not idk). plus I just reminded myself anon asked me to just say a few things I like and disliked about each charater not give crazy long paragraph about them. so, sorry Ben but you will probably have the most boring paragraph of them all. I still love you a lot pookie đ Iâm just tired AND MAXED OUT THE AMOUNT OF PICS I CAN USE EVEN THO I NEED TO TALK ABOUT U WHILE USING PICS đ¤ anyways enough rambling.
bens charater is often reduced to his backstory which genuinely makes me want to start tweaking out. if you expand on why his trauma affects him, then I will happily listen to you talk. But when most the fandom sees Ben as âmusic boy who hate bully, will fight you if you be meanâ it makes me so SAAAADDDDD. no, Ben will NOT beat my ass for making fun of Logan. Thatâs like⌠the whole point of his backstory? He doesnât like violence, at all. Heâs ashamed of his anger issues. He blames himself for having to move and putting his family in danger. The only reason he got involved with Loganâs fight was because the phantom interference + no one was there to help calm him down.
also he doesnât only do music. he draws too! heâs a very artistic dude. He also gardens. Ben be planting food and shit. which (as much as I HATE the ship) Logan n Ben shippers could probably use to their advantage. Yk bc Ben gardens and Logan helps his grandparents in their greenhouse? wtv. Bens prob growing flowers for Taylor anyways. Fuck Logan. sorry.
Ben is also very compassionate and gentle. Heâs always thinking about whatâs best for the group, even if it puts him in an uncomfortable position, like sharing his trauma. Ben is also very soft hearted. He gets flustered very easily, we see this when ashlyn and Taylor complimented him. He is very protective over those he cares about and he does not come to play, ever. Also his character development from S1 makes me so happy. He use to be attached to Aidenâs hip 24/7 and we could often only understand his emotions when Aiden would translate him to us. But weâve seen lately that heâs much closer to Taylor, even putting her safety before his own.
wow, gentleman alertâď¸if I didnât run out of photo space than I wouldâve shown more examples where he holds onto others as a way to comfort or protect them. heâs so respectful I might cry. maybe I will make a Ben-centered post. I need to show you guys pictures so you can understand what Iâm saying. But Ben is growing and he needs more attention. thank you.

âA Babysitterâs Lifeâ-A THG Alternate
Iâm trying something a little different. ActuallyâŚreally different.
For some reference, this story takes place about seven-ish years after the Rebellion, putting Katniss and Peeta in about their mid-twenties. Consider a Post-Rebellion Alternate where Rue was not picked for the 74th Hunger Games. All other deaths, however, have occurred.
_____________Â
Summary: âItâs my lauded life to take care of you Mellarks.â
In need of something new, Rue takes a job in District 12 for the Victors of the 74th Hunger Games.
This is my first time on a train. Actually, it is my first time anywhere.
Underneath me, I feel every track as we head towards my destinationâDistrict 12. Outside, a forest envelops our rickety train and I take a deep breath when a whiff of pine hits my nostrils. Already, I am getting accustomed to something new; our trees are mostly fruit-filled, smaller but plentiful and sweet-smelling. The forest around me is encompassing, filled with the rustic scent of undisturbed life.
My mother tells me this is the opportunity of a lifetime. It is a chance to see another District; meet some new people and to really learn what skills I have. I can tell, however, that my mother is more anxious to see me settled in somewhereâŚanywhere, really.
I think that sheâs just tired of finding me laid up in another wheat field staring up at the sky.
The train begins to slow down as we reach our last stop and my new home.
It is still early and my train had very little passengers; thereâs a handful of people waiting for their loved onesâand one boy.
He is grey-eyed and olive skinned with thick, inky hair brushed back from his sharp face. The boy leans against a post and when our eyes meet, I know that he has come for me.
Steeling myself, I stand up when the train comes to a halt and make my way out.
The boy is already in front of me when I step down onto the platform.
He lifts a strong brow at me. âRue Andrews?â
âYes,â I confirm.
âRory Hawthorne,â the boy replies. âIâm to take you to the Mellarks.â
Rory reaches for my lone bag and I whip it away. âNo need. I got it.â
He guffaws, a small grin on his lips as he holds his hands up in surrender. âJust trying to be polite.â
âIâm sorry,â I say as we head off the platform into what Iâm guessing is the main part of District 12. âIâm not used toââ
âPeople trying to be polite?â he responds.
I let out a snort. âItâs just very earlyâŚâ Something niggles at my memory and I look to him, trying to remember where I may have seen him. A poster drifts into my thoughts⌠âWhy do you look familiar?â
Rory gives me a long look. âMaybe youâve heard of my brotherâGale?â
Oh yesâGale Hawthorne.
Part of the Star Squad during the Rebellion and currently the sweetheart of District 2. His wedding to some businessmanâs daughter was splashed all over the papers and the Capitolâs main channel. My mind recalls a picture of Gale with his family and I briefly remember an image of Rory in a fitted suit.
I turn to him. âYou look better in your regular clothes.â
Rory colors. âYeahâŚAlice, Galeâs wife, wanted us to wear those monkey suits.â He meets my eyes. âSo, how did you fall into the job of glorified babysitter for the Mellarks?â
âMy mom was visiting her sister in District 4 and met Mrs. Everdeen,â I explain. âShe was telling my mom about how Katniss is expecting another child and has to limit her activities because this pregnancy is a little more difficult. Also, that their daughter needs someone to run around with while Peeta is at their bakery. So, my mom volunteered for me.â
I also jumped at the chance. I needed something new.
Rory nods in understanding. âIt can get stifling sometimes.â
âDonât I know it,â I reply as we reach the end of town and toward a border fence. âSo, your family was close to Katnissâ, right?â
âYes. Katniss and Gale used to go hunting together,â Rory recalls. âHe was in love with her at some pointâŚbut she chose Peeta. It was the right choice, in my opinion.â
âOhâŚso you also knew Prââ
âI knew Prim,â Rory finishes hurriedly. âWe grew up together and when we were in hiding in District 13, we took care of each other. Then, she joined the medical teamââ He stops, his expression heavy. âWeâre here.â
I stare up at an iron archway, leading to the cul-de-sac of grand houses. âVictorsâ Village.â
âYup,â Rory replies wryly. âPopulation: Four and a three-fourth people. I guess with youâfive and three-fourths.â
I roll my eyes at him. âThanks for the math lesson.â
We reach the first house on the right. Thereâs a well-tended garden in front and a pathway leading up to the house created withâŚprimroses.
Rory follows my gaze as we approach the front door.
âPeeta planted them when he came back from the Capitol.â
âFor Katniss,â I muse. âThatâs romantic.â
A laugh comes from in front of us.
âI donât think we had romance on our mindsâŚwe were just trying to keep ourselves from attacking one another.â
I look up to find a very pregnant Katniss Mellark standing in the open doorway.
++++++
Katniss Mellark looks surprisingly young.
While we are just a few good years apart in age, Katnissâ smooth complexion and clear greys could easily fool someone into thinking we are school-age friends instead of employer and employee. I have a hard time registering that the woman in front of me was once a seventeen-year-old who, in one action, started a revolution.
âThanks for picking Rue up,â she tells Rory. âWhat do I owe you?â
âNothing,â he tells her easily. âI got to walk a cute, intelligent girl to your house. Thatâs reward enough.â
I turn to him. âI appreciate the intelligent. I hate the cute.â Reaching into my pocket, I hand him a few bills. âHere. Buy yourself a thesaurus and come up with some better adjectives.â
âI like you already,â Katniss says with a smirk before looking to Rory. âStop by the bakery. Peeta has a few things that he needs help with.â
âYou got it,â Rory replies. Stepping onto the porch, he gives me a wink. âIâm glad youâre here. See you around.â
He turns and saunters off before I can reply.
âRory is a real charmer,â Katniss remarks as she closes the door.
âHeâs a little much,â I tell her.
She laughs and then looks me over. âSo, what made you decide to leave the lush orchards of District 11?â
âI donât know.â I look around the entrywayâpainted a cool blueâbefore glancing to each side where the living room and den are. âThere was just a yearning, I guess. A chance to do something new.â Turning, I meet her eyes. âIsnât that what you fought for? A chance for the generations after you to live fully?â
âAt the time, I was just trying to stay alive,â she says, somewhat shyly.
Her hands go to her belly; sheâs entering her seventh month, from what I can tell. Iâm the oldest of six and by the time Charleneâthe last of my siblingsâwas born, I knew without my mom telling me that she was in labor.
âWell, it worked out in our favor. Thank goodness for that.â Katnissâ mouth opens just a bit as if to reply before it firmly closes. âSorry. Iâve been told that I speak with absolutely no filter at times and it can throw people off.â
âYou remind me a lot of Johanna,â she tells me.
âJohanna Mason?â I think for a moment. âShe seemed a bit blunt during her interviews and I was never good at axe-wielding.â
âTalk to Johanna for five minutes and you might want an axe of your own.â
We both laugh and I can see the tension melt off her. I can also see that she is exhausted, her hands imperceptibly going to her lower back.
âWhy donât we go to the kitchen and you can tell me more about my duties?â I say gently.
Katniss nods, letting out a small breath. âRight down the hall towards the back.â
We head past the stairs and make a turn into the open archway where the kitchen is. Itâs homey; peach wallpaper with a delicate filigree pattern and dark wood. A table stands adjacent to the backdoor heading to the yard and I lead Katniss to a chair, pulling it out for her.
âYouâre perceptive,â she remarks. âAster will like you.â
âWhereâs your tea?â I ask and Katniss nods towards the cupboard next to me. I go to the cupboard and find the chamomile easily. âI like the name. Totally makes sense.â
Katniss gazes at me curiously. âWhat do you mean?â
âAsterâit means star.â The kettle is already filled on their stovetop so I just turn the flame on. âYou know, because you and Peeta were âThe Star-Crossed Lovers of District 12â.â
âDamn, I never thought of that,â she tells me with a smile. âShe was born in September and thatâs her birth month flower; we just kind of stuck with a theme.â
âIf this one is a boy, are you going to give him some sort of bread name?â I tease as I search the cabinets for a mug. Their kitchen is organized well enough for me to find them in one of the upper cupboards.
âActually, I wouldnât mind a flower name for a boy,â a jovial voice says behind me.
Peeta Mellark looks quite different compared to the propos footage from the Rebellion.
Back then, he was gaunt; his blue eyes somewhat blank as Katniss stood at the forefront of the cameras. It was a little disheartening as he had so much charm during his Caesar Flickerman interview.
Besides Thresh, my mom favored him.
Putting memories of my past behind me, I watch as he greets Katniss, dipping his head to meet hers in a sweet kiss.
âHello, my love,â he greets her tenderly.
In return, Katniss reaches to run a hand through his dirty-blond locks.
Present Peeta Mellark is, by far, my favorite.
âRue, right?â He gives me a bright grin and I nod. âYouâve got Rory singing your praises.â
âIt doesnât seem all that hard to impress Rory,â I say wryly. Pouring the boiled water into the mug I find, I dip in the tea bag and place the cup in front of Katniss. âThat tea bag would probably impress him.â
Peeta laughs warmly. âYouâre going to fit in just fine here.â

Aster Mellark wakes up from her mid-afternoon nap.
By then, I have already set myself up in the room next to hers and I can hear her slight wail as she pulls herself from her slumber.
Without thought, I go into the nursery and find her in her daybed, staring up at the hanging mobile of the planets. The room is painted a sage green with the opposite wall being a beautiful mural of a meadow.
Going to the bed, I sit at the edge looking down at the toddler. âHi Aster. Iâm Rue.â
Aster has the brightest blue eyes I have ever seen. They are large and almond-shaped with thick lashes framing her gorgeous orbs. Her hair is raven black and thick; it hits her shoulders and I think of the many hairstyles that I can do with such locks.
When sheâs a grown-up, Katniss and Peeta will have their work cut out for them.
âWoo,â she repeats my name. Aster holds her arms out to me and I canât help but reach for her.
I love the âlittle oneâ smell and mourned each time one of my brothers or sisters outgrew that innocent scent of babydom.
Standing up, I give her a smile. âAre you hungry?â
âMy wuv,â she says simply.
âWhat does that mean?â I ask.
Aster points outside. âMy wuv! My wuv!â
âYour parents might need to fill me in,â I tell her as I carry her down the stairs, heading for the den.
Katniss and Peeta sit on the sofa, her head on his shoulder and his hand on her belly, as they talk to one another quietly. I almost hate to break up the intimacy of the moment, but Aster is already scrambling down my body and heading towards her parents.
She waves her hands out at Katniss, who picks her up. âMy wuv, my wuv.â
Katniss turns to her husband. âNow she will never call me Mama.â
I think back on Peetaâs greeting and I bite back the need to cooâI am not sentimental.
But the thought of Aster imitating her father is just too much for me.
Next thing you know, Iâll be singing love songs and reading sonnets.
++++++
The next few days are pretty much routine.
I wake up first to get dressed and ready before Aster wakes up. I am lucky because I get the hallway bathroom to myself. Katniss and Peeta have their own in the master bedroom.
After that, Aster usually wakes up and I bring her downstairs to make her breakfast and some toast for Katniss. Morning sickness did not go away after that first trimester and she remains nauseous mostly in the morning, though there is an occasional afternoon disappearance into the commode.
Peeta, who wakes up at the crack of dawn to heat the ovens, comes back to deliver a fresh loaf of bread to check in on his wife and Aster. I make sure that he brings his lunch to the bakery before he takes off with a final kiss to his family and a friendly wave for me.
I can tell that he is assured that his two ladies are safe with me. We share one goal; to make sure they are cared for.
Eventually, I meet Haymitch Abernathy. He is a bear of a man, but his dark eyes soften when Aster rushes into his arms.
âNice to meet you,â he says gruffly. âYou knowâŚif it wasnât going to be them, I was rooting for Thresh.â
âYes, I know.â My eyes go to the rough ground. âThresh was that kind of guy, thoughâkind enough to save Katniss from Clove. Had a bit of a crush on him back in 11, but he never saw me as anything but the little sister type.â I look up to see Haymitch still gazing at me, his eyes full of empathy. âKind of broke my heart when heââ
Haymitch puts a hand to my shoulder. âWell, itâs a damn shame because you grew up very lovely.â
âFor some reason, I feel like you donât give compliments too frequently,â I say with a smile. âThanks.â
I think I can find myself caring for Haymitch as much as Iâm beginning to care for the Mellarks.
âGet out!â
A shout comes from the house and immediately Haymitch gives Aster back to me.
âWait here,â he commands. âDo not come in until I say itâs okay.â
Thereâs nothing I can do but nod in agreement.
++++++
Itâs a full hour before Haymitch emerges from the houseâhe looks exhausted.
âKatniss is asking for Aster,â he says.
âWhat happened?â I cradle Aster who has long fallen asleep against me.
We head towards the house and I canât help but feel a little apprehensive. The house looks as it normally does in the evening; warm yellow light seeping through handmade curtains and quiet as a mouse. However, there is a sinking feeling hitting my core as we walk up the steps.
âOnce in a while,â Haymitch starts. âPeeta has theseâŚepisodes. Usually triggered by stress or in this case, a memory of the old bakery. Theyâre infrequent but when they hit, they hit hard. Katniss, in her condition, isnât able to handle it so their old mentor is in charge.â
âThank you,â I tell him. âNot many mentors would care to help.â
âI like âem,â he says offhandedly.
A smile grows on my lips. âYou more than like them.â
Haymitch opens the front door for me. âWell, just donât tell them that.â
After telling him goodnight and promising to update him later, I close the door behind me. I go to the den first; Katniss is lying down on the couch, her eyes closed.
When my steps creak against the floor, she opens her eyes and sits up carefully, her hands resting on her belly. Every day, I see her little one growing even more. Her grey eyes are weary and lined with tears, but she reaches for Aster immediately.
I place her in Katnissâ arms. âAre you okay?â
âHe came across an old rolling pin of his fatherâs,â she explains quietly. âMr. Mellark was always such a nice man, but he wasnât without his faults. He never defended Peeta or his brothers from their mother.â
I nod in understanding. âIâm guessing she wasnât the mothering type.â
âFar from it. Peeta wanted to understand their relationship,â Katniss continues. âItâs just with being a father or a mother, itâs hard to understand how anyone could not love their child. Mrs. Mellark didnât love her kids and Mr. Mellark couldnât muster enough love to defend them.â
âBut Peeta still loves them, anyway?â
Katniss smiles, her eyes faraway. âThatâs just the way Peeta is. He canât help but loveâeven if you treat him badly. Iâve been one of those.â
âIt was hard to see that through the cameraâs view,â I remark. âBut for some reason, from the beginning, I thought it was real.â
âMaybe it was.â Katniss shrugs, her eyes full of tears. âI was just too young and stupid to see it. PeetaâŚhe always knewâand thatâs what I fell in love with. That damn hope of his.â
âItâs a good way to be,â I reply. âDo you need anything?â
âCan you just check on him?â she asks quietly. âPeeta never wants me to see him after one of these episodes.â
âIâm sure thatâs not true.â However, Iâm not sure if Iâm wrong or not. âIâll go make sure heâs okay and let him know that youâre down here.â
Katniss nods, before closing her eyes and cradling Aster even closer.
Going upstairs, I turn the opposite way of my room and toward the double doors. In the few weeks that Iâve been here, I have never been in the master bedroom as there was no need. However, I canât help but worry about what state Iâll find Peeta in. Katniss has tiptoed around the torture tactics of the Capitol, but obviously it has damaged Peeta in some way.
Carefully, I knock.
âCome in,â Peeta says dully.
I let out a breath before turning the doorknob and stepping in.
I donât close the doorâjust in case.
âI told Katniss Iâd check on you,â I start as I walk into the room.
Peeta is laying on the bed, turned away from me, in a fetal position and I can hear him sniffle.
âI donât know whyâŚI acted horribly towards her.â
I stay where I am, but I feel like whatever happened has ebbed and now Iâm facing a shell of a person.
âKatniss loves you,â I reply. âYou know that, or you wouldnât be feeling so bad.â
He laughs gruffly. âThatâs trueâŚIâve always loved her, you know. Since we were kids.â
âI know.â Who doesnât remember their time in the cave? My mom only let me watch it because it was featured on the screen at our town square. More than one woman swooned over Peetaâs sweet story of Katniss and the Valley song. âAnd thatâs how I know that you never really mean to hurt her.â
âYou have more faith in me than I do at the moment,â he tells me.
Peeta finally turns to me and I can see that his hands are bandaged. There is a small bit of blood on his lower lip while his blues are red-rimmed with regret.
âI do. I have faith that you love your family more than anything,â I say. âMore than your parents may have loved you. Aster and the new baby will never feel that they werenât adored because you and Katniss would rather die than let that happen.â
He nods in agreement. âIâll go check on themâŚafter I clean up.â
âI agree. You look like crap.â
Peeta guffaws. âGet to sleep, Rue. Youâre done playing therapist for the day.â
I grin. âItâs my lauded life to take care of you Mellarks.â
âYouâre doing a good job.â
I tell him goodnight, closing the door behind me. I listen briefly behind it, just to make sure that heâs alright and leave only when I hear him getting out of bed.
In my room, I remind myself to call my mother. She is a stoic womanânot quite as affectionate as othersâbut I can tell that she loves her children fiercely. She wouldnât be working her butt off from dawn till dusk if she didnât.
After I change and settle down, I still feel restless. It must be the adrenaline of everything that has happened in the last few hours. Also, I hate to admit, but I do worry about the Mellarks. Despite everything, Katniss and Peeta are still young adults just trying to make their way. Theyâre still learning how to be parents to Aster and their soon-to-be-arriving baby.
My mother tells me that she and my father made all sorts of mistakes with me, but it made them work as a team and made them stronger.
I hope itâs the same for Katniss and Peeta.
My stomach growls and I realize that I havenât eaten dinner. Thereâs always a little something in the fridge so Iâm quickly on my feet and out the door. Itâs as I head down the stairs that I hear something; itâs coming from the den where I left Katniss.
âIâm so sorry, love.â Itâs Peeta. âSometimes, I donât how you put up with me. Part of me thinks that Iâm never going to be fixed.â
âThereâs nothing to fix,â Katniss tells him. âYou canât repair whatâs a part of youâŚa part of us. This damage from the rebellion and the Games, itâs not going to go away. But we canât let it take over us. Every day, we just try and live as best we can. We fought so hard to get here.â
I hear the smile in Peetaâs voice. âWhen did you become the optimist?â
Katniss snorts. âAll these stupid hormones have made me soft. As soon as this one is out, Iâm going into the woods and shooting something.â
âI look forward to it,â Peeta tells her.
They laugh quietly and it fills me with happiness.
For all is well in our little home.
++++++
âSo, everything is alright?â
I walk along the edge of the forest with Rory on a rare day to myself. It has been two months since Iâve come to District 12 and I feel like itâs become part of my skin. I know every creak of the Mellark house or the exact cry that Aster makes whenever she wants the blue spoon and not the pink one. I know the right amount of time it takes to make Katnissâ favorite tea and when a homemade loaf made by Peeta has been proofed enough.
I can even feel the seasons change; this autumn is tense. Baby Mellark is almost hereâand sometimes I feel Iâll know the exact moment that he or she is ready to come.
âYes, itâs been quiet since the incident,â I tell Rory as we walk into the woods just beyond the border of District 12. âHow were they when they were younger? Before the Games?â
âI didnât know Peeta all too much,â Rory says as he kicks a stone in his path. âHe was always a good guyâŚlike his Dad. Iâve known Katniss since I was a kid because she spent so much time with Gale. She was serious and stubborn like him; they were peas in a pod. In the end, they were too much alike. My mother always knew that they werenât meant for each other, but Gale was insistent that she was his.â
âAnd the Games changed that?â
âKatniss learned to care for someone outside her circle,â he tells me. âShe didnât have to take care of Peeta, but there was something about Peeta that just made him specialâŚand it killed Gale. I mean, any idiot watching the Games could see that kiss was real.â
âIs it silly that I always wanted a kiss like that one in the cave?â I admit. âNot the âfearing for my lifeâ aspect of it, but that âIâm seeing something wonderful right in front of my face and I canât let him goâ part.â I smile dryly. âSo far, none of my kisses have been like that.â
âMine were.â Rory stops, his eyes looking out ahead. âBack in District 13, Prim and IâŚâ His fists clench. âMaybe it was because we werenât sure what was going to happen from one day to the nextâŚbut they felt real.â
âI didnât know Prim.â My hands instinctively go to his to stop him from breaking skin. âBut from what youâve told me and what Katniss tells me whenever she can muster up the courage to, Prim was not the kind of person who would just kiss someone and not mean it.â
âWhat if it never happens again?â he asks.
I shake my head. âOne day it will and if all else fails, Iâll give it a go.â
Rory grins at me. âYouâll take me on?â
âI never said that,â I say. âIâm just realistic. I donât think that Iâll ever have a kiss like Katniss and Peetaâs from the cave. Love doesnât come in spades.â
âYou sound just like Katniss,â Rory teases. âShe was always saying she never wanted kids, especially when the Capitol was up and killing them for show. And she was still adamant after it was all overâtook Peeta years to convince to her to have Aster.â We stop and Rory helps me onto a rock overlooking the wide meadow before us. âMy mom was there the day Aster was born. She told me as soon as she was in Katnissâ arms, that resistanceâŚthat fearâŚjust melted from her eyes.â
âAnd you think one kiss will change my mind about love?â
Rory grins at me. âI donât knowâbut it doesnât mean that you shouldnât give a try.â
++++++
âHi Mama!â I call out into the phone receiver. Itâs been forever since Iâve heard from her; my mother has been working tirelessly since returning from District 4. She is a supervisor in one of the orchard fields and it leaves her little time to catch up with me here in 12. âHow is it going?â
âSame old, same old,â she replies. âWe really miss you out here. I mean, Casey has been doing just fine taking care of the rest of the brood, but he canât make the roast and potatoes the way the younger ones want it!â
Casey is seventeen and should be focusing on school. Instead he takes care of my younger siblings and takes a night shift at one of our production factories. As beautiful as it is in District 11, it doesnât come without hard work.
âThey shouldnât be so picky,â I admonish.
âHow are Katniss and Peeta? Their little ones?â Mom asks curiously.
I bite back the need to roll my eyes; I am sure that sheâs been telling everyone that her oldest is living in the Mellark home, reaping the benefits of some Victors.
It is quite far from that.
Over time, I have come to realize that the rewards donât necessarily balance out the punishment of winning the Games. Wonderful as Katniss and Peeta are, they work hard to create a semblance of normalcy for themselves and Aster.
It can be a trial for both, but I have seen them work through moments of gripping table edges or counters, biting back tears at memories, and having nightmares that leave them both trembling in cold sweats.
And I am here to take Aster in my room when needed or bring one of them a glass of water or cup of tea after a hard day.
In some ways, itâs important to me that they live as normally as they canâbecause theyâve fought so hard.
âItâs just fine. Katniss and Peeta are just a run-of-the-mill couple with a different kind of love story,â I tell her. âAster, their daughter, is just precious. Itâs almost time for the next one to come so weâre just waiting.â
âThat sounds great,â my mother replies. Thereâs a long pause. âSweetheart, Troy has been asking about you.â
I grip the receiver at the sound of his name. âOh yeah?â
âHeâs been asking if youâre coming home,â she continued carefully. âI donât know what happened between you two, but youâve been connected since birth. His mother and I practically worked in the orchard side by side when we were having you bothââ
âWhat are you saying, Mama?â I ask abruptly.
âIn about a month, a job will open up here in 11,â she tells me. âWe miss you. Iâm not trying to pressure youâI just want you to think on it.â Thereâs a sigh and Iâm not sure if itâs coming from me or Mom. âAnd, this whole thing with Troyâyou have to make a decision, either way.â
âI know,â I reply. âI have to go. Aster is going to wake up from her nap soon.â
âAlright, Rue.â Thereâs resignation in her tone. âTalk soon. I love you.â
âLove you too, Mama.â I hang up, biting back the need to sob or scream into the receiver.
I lied. Aster is already awake, sitting on the porch with her parents.
I feel bad for lying, but Iâm not ready to face what Iâve left behind.
Stepping out onto the porch, I find Peeta and Katniss sitting on the swing seat. Across the way, Aster is sitting on Haymitchâs lap as he plays a game of chess with Rory.
I sit down on the steps of the porch, leading to the courtyard. The sun is just beginning to set and I close my eyes to take in that last bit of orange warmth.
âYou okay there?â Katniss asks. âDid your phone call go alright?â
âYes.â I let out a breath. âJust going through something similarly like the whole Gale situation, if you know what I mean.â
âSo, you ran here,â Peeta says.
It isnât a question and we both know it.
âI needed a change.â I turn to them. âTroy has been my friend since birth; our mothers worked side by side while we were in their stomachs. So, I guess he always thought I belonged to him.â I open my eyes, finding Rory looking to me, curiosity in his gaze. âI just want to belong to me. Iâm not ready to justâŚgive in.â
âWoo!â Aster toddles over to me, perching herself in my lap. âSing.â
âSing? What am Iâyour own personal songbird?â I tickle her and she giggles. âWell, if Iâm going to be someoneâs songbird, I would love to be yours.â Aster settles against me and I take in that wonderful smell of youth before deciding on a songâone that I heard when I was a child whenever my father came home from work, when my mother still danced.
âSomething in your eyes, makes me want to lose myself
Makes me want to lose myself, in your armsâŚâ
Iâm not much of a singer, but Aster nestles herself against me contently. Haymitch and Rory have paused their game to listen and though it should scare me, I feel light singing this song.
It reminds me of better times.
âIf you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've been so alone
And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you've doneâŚâ
âYouâre dancing with me, Katniss.â Peeta helps her stand carefully. âI donât want our last dance to have been at Snowâs Ball.â
Katniss doesnât argue instead letting him lead her into the courtyard to dance along the fireflies.
As I watch them, they look lightyears away, wrapped up in nothing but each other.
âIt feels like home to me, it feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from
It feels like home to me, it feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where I belongâŚâ
I close my eyes once more, rocking Aster against me. I fall into memories of warm fall nights and the smell of coffee on the stove. I canât even make a pot sometimes without wanting to burst into tears. It just evokes memories of a man who would drink coffee to stay up so he and my mother could have a conversation to themselves sans their six children.
âBut I'm alright, 'cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see, through the dark there is lightâŚâ
I open my eyes just as Katniss embraces Peeta and for a moment, I donât see them.
I see my mother and father dancing to their wedding song.
âWell, if you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
And if you knew how happy you are making me
I never thought that I'd love anyone so muchâŚâ
I always told myself that I wouldnât settle for anything less than what they have. Seeing Katniss and Peeta with one another strengthens that resolve, nothing less than having someone look at me the way that they look at one another.
Like theyâve found home in one another.
I finish my song, and everyone applauds softly as Aster has fallen asleep in my arms.
âYouâre crying.â I didnât even notice that Rory has found himself on the porch steps. He reaches forward to brush away the stray tear that managed to hit my cheek. âI never pegged you as the sentimental type.â
âMy parents used to dance to that song every night after us kids went to bed,â I find myself admitting. âIf I close my eyes, I can still picture them as I peeked behind my door. Then Dad was gone, and the music just stopped.â
âMakes you wonder if love like that could even last forever,â he says. âOr are we all just destined to muddle through half-lives and half-loves.â
âHalf-lives and half-loves.â I find myself almost laughingâŚor weeping. âIf there was ever a more appropriate word for how my life is currently going.â
âNo.â Rory shakes his head, gazing into my eyes until my skin tingles. âSomeone like you could never do anything but live fully and love fully. Youâre just afraid.â
âAfraid of what?â
âAfraid because you already know everything that you need to be happy.â
++++++
The arrival of the fourth Mellark comes when the first leaf of autumn hits the ground. I am sitting in the kitchen with Katniss having a cup of tea; her stomach has reached its limit at this point and so has she.
âSo, thisâŚTroyâŚâ She takes a sip and sighs in contentment. âWhat made you run away?â
I try to gather my words before responding, âI think he only really saw me as a woman when others started to notice.â I smile crisply. âIt bothered me, tooâthis ownership he thought he hadâlike I was just waiting for him to decide that he wanted me. Love shouldnât be an obligation; it should be an honor. In the end, all I want is for someone to look at me the way my father looked at my mother. Like Peeta looks at you.â
âI understand,â Katniss replies gently. âSometimes, when you feel the world is falling apart around you, you tend to keep who and what you know close to you. Because itâs just too scary to see what might be on the other sideââ She suddenly grimaces before letting out a breath. âJust some stretching pain, nothing to worry about.â
The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. âNo, I think itâs more.â I help her up. âIâm going to help you up to bed and then call Peeta.â
âYou sure?â she asks doubtfully. âIt didnât feel this way with Aster.â Another gasp escapes her mouth. âOh, that felt different.â
âMy mother had six children,â I tell her. âNo two births will feel ever feel the same.â
Together, we make our way upstairs and into the master bedroom. I go to her wardrobe, taking out a nightgown and handing it to her.
âAster is still down for her nap,â I inform her as I turn and give her privacy. âIâll check on her, call Peeta and Mrs. Hawthorne then come back. Is there anything you need while Iâm downstairs?â
Katniss shakes her head as she gets into bed. âNo, Iâll be okay.â
âIâll make you a sandwich and bring up some water,â I tell her. âYouâll need your strength.â
She smiles gratefully. âYou think of everything.â
++++++
Peeta and Mrs.Hawthorne arrive quickly. After a quick exam, it seems that Katniss has a long while to go. We all continue throughout the day as normal; Peeta bakes in the kitchen knowing that we will need sustenance throughout the next few days. Mrs. Hawthorne sits at Katnissâ side knitting a swaddle blanket for the little one while I care for Aster.
Aster comes to visit her mother a few hours into the labor. She jumps onto the bed and nestles at her motherâs side.
âHello wuv,â she says, her bright blue staring up at her mother.
âIâm bringing you a little brother or sister,â Katniss informs her as she lets out a small exhale. âWill you be good for Daddy and Rue?â
Aster nods, her blue eyes solemn. âYes, wuv.â
Thereâs a knock and Peeta emerges from behind the bedroom door. He places a kiss on his wifeâs forehead and gives her a bright smile.
âHow are you doing, love?â he asks.
âOh, you know the usualâtrying to push your child into the world,â Katniss answers with a small grin.
âRory and Posy are downstairs,â Peeta tells us before holding his arms out to Aster. âWhy donât you come downstairs with me so you can have dinner?â
âIâll take her,â Mrs. Hawthorne offers. âI want to check in with the kids, anyway.â Going to Peeta, she offers her arms to Aster. âCome on honey, letâs go.â
âThanks Hazelle,â Peeta tells her gratefully.
âNo problem.â Mrs. Hawthorne holds Aster protectively. âI sure miss them at this age.â
They disappear into the hallway, leaving me with the couple.
Peeta looks to his wife. âHow are you really feeling?â
âLike someone is grabbing my lady parts and just twisting away.â Katniss grimaces. âHere comes another oneâŚâ
I immediately go to support her back. âBreathe out slowly.â
Katniss clenches her teeth. âOh, this feels intense.â She looks between Peeta and me. âSomeone distract me.â
âWell, we got a new custom cake orderââ
âNo! Peeta, I love you, but I canât get excited about frosting the way you want me to,â she tells him.
âI left District 11 because Troy proposed to me.â
Peeta and Katniss turn to me in shock.
âBesides my Mom, youâre the only other people who know,â I continue quietly. âI sometimes go to lay out in a field near my homeâŚitâs my spot. One day, Troy was there and before I could even think, he was down on his knee.â
âThen what?â Katniss asks.
I shake my head. âAll I could think isâŚget the hell out of my field.â I look between the couple. âIs that bad of me?â
Peeta shakes his head. âWhat was your other option? Just say yes to save his pride? No offense, but from what youâve been telling Katniss, it doesnât seem like a match made out of loveâbut out of obligation.â
âI just feel bad becauseâŚI donât want you to think that I came here to run awayâeven if it sounds like it,â I explain. âThe truth is that I never felt like I was more home than when I came to District 12. When I came to stay with you threeâŚalmost four, I started to feel like myself.â
Katniss takes my hand, giving it a squeeze. âYou do belong here.â
Peeta covers her hand and grins at me. âThis is your home nowâif you want it to be.â
I tried to hold my back my tears, but my thank you still sounds a bit watery.
++++++
âOkay, KatnissâŚpush!â
Mrs. Hawthorne stands at the edge of the bed, ready and waiting for the newest Mellark to arrive.
Night came and went as we can now see dawn coming in through the bedroom window. I put Aster down to sleep many hours ago while Posy, who volunteered to stay the night, stayed in the bed adjacent to her. I then took a quick nap whenâat around three in the morningâPeeta roused me because Katniss was requesting my presence.
Currently, I am holding one of her legs while Peeta holds the other.
âI canâtâŚIâm too tiredâŚâ Katniss is exhausted and deliriousâŚtears and sweat intermingling her flushed face. She looks to Peeta. âIâm sorryâŚâ
Peeta shakes his head. âThereâs nothing to be sorry about. You are tired and youâve had no rest. I am a rotten husband getting you into this situation.â
Katniss nods. âYou kind of are!â Her face crumbles. âI want Prim.â
We all go silent at her admission.
Because as much as we want to give her comfort, there is no way to get her sister back.
Tears fill my eyes thinking of the many occasions that I have wished for my own father. I think of all the important moments that he wonât be there for: my weddingâŚthe birth of my childrenâ
âYou can pretend Iâm Prim,â I tell her softly. âClose your eyes and just imagine that youâre gripping her handâŚâ Katniss looks to me, smoky eyes filled, before doing what I say. âAnd, just imagine what she would tell you at this very moment.â
âShe would say to suck it up. There are more important things to do right now,â Katniss says.
I move closer to her ear. âSuck it up. There are more important things to do right now.â
Katniss nods, eyes still closed. âOkay, I think Iâm ready to push again.â
âAt the count of three,â Mrs. Hawthorne begins. âOneâŚtwoâŚthree!â
Katniss bears down and it is a long, tense-filled moment as we wait to see if there is any progressâ
A shrill cry breaks the moment.
âItâs a boy.â Mrs. Hawthorne grins before taking the little one and putting him on Katnissâ chest. âLooks like heâs got a little gold on him.â
Katniss lets out a content sigh, her eyes on the sticky, little thing currently laying on her. âHello there.â
âWe have a son,â Peeta says in a thick voice. He gives Katniss a kiss on the forehead. âThank you, love.â
âAlways.â Katniss then turns to me. âThank you.â
âItâs my job,â I tell her before wiping the tears from my eyes.

Stepping out into the hallway, I am surprised to discover Rory coming up the stairs.
âWhat are you doing here?â My voice is hoarse with exhaustion and I lean against the wall to keep my body up.
âI slept downstairs in the den,â he explains sheepishly. âSo, the baby is here?â
âA boy.â I smile to myself. âBeautiful like the rest of his family and golden-haired like Prââ I stop, struggling to suppress the emotion churning inside of me. âWhy did you stay?â
Rory goes scarlet. âI stayedâŚfor you.â
I shake my head. âYou stayed because you were helping Primâs family. Iâm nothing but a glorified babysitter. Remember?â
I turn away so he wonât see me cry over the dumbest reason in the worldâI donât want to be Primâs substitute.
Suddenly, Rory crosses the space between us and pulls me into his arms.
âI came here for you.â His hand reaches gently into the tangle that is my hair. âThe person who cared for Primâwho loved herâwas still just a boy. He will always love her in some way, but he had to grow up.â
âAnd now?â I ask into his chest.
A wisp of a kiss brushes against my forehead. âThe man holding you stayed for you.â
I hold him closer to me, never wanting to leave this feeling of belongingâof home.
âThank you for staying.â
For now, this is the closest I can get to âI love youâ.
++++++
âCareful now,â I instruct Aster as I help her hold her little brother. âHeâs still very fragile.â
âOhhâŚbaby,â Aster says in awe. The newborn in her arms let out a yawn and she giggles. âHello wuv!â
âI guess youâve been dethroned,â I tell Katniss with a laugh as I settle into the chair next to the bed. âMaybe sheâll start calling you Mama now.â
âIâll gladly relinquish the title,â she replies, looking at the children by her side. âThey look like theyâre going to be a handful.â
âAster is a spitfire in herself!â I look to the little girl who Iâve come to love like one of my own siblings. âBut sheâll protect her little brotherâlike you protected Prim.â
Katniss meets my eyes. âListen, Peeta told me what you did before I had the baby. I was tired and I say things that I donât mean. When I had Aster, I asked to see my dadâŚâ
âItâs really not a problem,â I say in what I hope is a light voice.
âIt is, because youâre not PrimâŚsheâs gone,â she says in a tight voice. âAnd because we all care for you, not just as some replacement Primâbut because youâre you.â Katniss places her hand over mine. âPeeta and I hope you will stay for the long haul. Aster needs youâŚso does Oak.â
âI still canât believe you named him that,â I tell her.
I jokingly told her and Peeta weeks ago that since theyâre into flower names for girls, they should look into tree names for boy.
When they asked for an example, I gave them Oakâmy fatherâs middle name.
âIt sounded right,â Katniss responds with a wave of her hand. âAnyway, the point is we need you.â
I settle back for a moment, taking in her words, before finally answering.
âMay I make a phone call?â
Katnissâ mouth widens in a grin. âTake all the time you need.â
I leave the room, heading down the stairs and go into the kitchen first to place the kettle onto the stove to heat some water and then take Katnissâ favorite cup out of the cabinet. Making sure that Peetaâs lunch is packed, I then head into the den where the telephone is.
Taking a deep breath, I reach for the receiver and dial.
The call is answered immediately.
âHello Mama.â
++++++
We walk around the forest, steps steady as we head towards an unknown destination.
âSo, youâre staying?â Rory says, his eyes ahead.
I nod, letting the smile rise on my lips. âIâm staying.â
He reaches, his hand taking mine, our fingers intertwining with ease. It feels right. âNow what?â
I stop and Rory follows suit turning to me.
My hand reaches to the nape of his neck, pulling him close enough so that I can push onto my tiptoes to press my lips to his. He pulls me closer and I sink into him, losing myself as we fall deep into the kiss.
MomentsâŚhours later, we finally separate, breathless and grinning.
I take his hand once more.
âHow about you show me the rest of our home?â
FIN.
This is different, but I enjoyed writing it.
I hoped you enjoyed reading it.

To my beta who I have a serious writers crush on @alliswell21 you and I both know how much awe I am in over your writing skillzzz.Â
Rated: TÂ Â
PART ONE - ZERO HOUR:
They were known as the living dead. Zombies  created by the Capitol who didnât find their true love. Katniss Everdeen watched one of them from her window, walking slowly, a mask of indifference on its colorless face. He was followed by Darius, one of the nicer Peacekeepers.
She glanced down at her arm, the cause of such a creature, was the tracker embedded under the tattoo they had to get printed on their arm. It was a control measure put in by the Capitol after the war.
At the age of twelve, all children received a tattoo with their initials and age. Â It was the first step to show the ever presence and dominance of the Capitol. At 18, they were brought to the school yard to be outfitted with their trackers.
The tracker remained silent until they met their soulmate.  When you met your soulmate, the tracker would glow showing their initials for exactly  8 hours, in which you had to connect with your mate and register with the local magistrate.
The magistrate  were the only ones with the authority  to remove the tracker.
If you missed the 8 hour window, the kill switch would activate. An electrical discharge was sent from the tracker directly to your brain, a sort of modern day lobotomy.
Everyone strived to find their life partner, afraid of becoming a poor soulless creature, just as her sister, Primrose, called them.
Primrose was right, the mateless walked the earth with no purpose other than to do the dangerous jobs the Capitol assigned them. They blew up the caverns in the mines, tested new machinery, the lucky few became slaves to a Capitolite or wealthy member of the society. They were kept far away from the regular folk and guarded by Peacekeepers.
âHey Catnip,â Gale knocked on the window pane bringing her out of her thoughts.
Katniss smiled at her friend, hunting partner , and soon to be in-law. This morning both families were overjoyed about the nuptials She waved him inside. âHey Gale.â
Gale was twenty six, tall and very good looking. There were rumors about his prowess in the bedroom, though she didnât care much about the stories.
He entered the room, and filled it. He was a little over six feet tall, one of the tallest men in The Seam. âSo Primrose finally got you to wear a dress.â
Katniss grimaced,âItâs like putting lipstick on a pig, Gale.â
Gale chuckled. âYou should see my dad, he didnât want to wear a suit, but you know my mom.â
Hazelle Hawthorne was a force to be reckoned with.
âVick wanted me to give this to Prim.â Gale extended the package he held in his hand.
âThanks,â she took the package from him. âIâm sure whatever Vick cooked up, Prim is going to love it.â
Everyone thought Katniss was going to be Galeâs soulmate, but it was never meant to be. Katniss was thankful that the odds were in her favor.
âI canât believe my baby brother is getting hitched before me.â
When Vick turned eighteen the previous day, no one was surprised  his tracker showed Primâs initials. The entire Hawthorne clan came to the Everdeen home, to confirm Vickâs initials showed  on Primâs arm. Both families ran to the Seam magistrate to have the trackers deactivated and removed. Katniss had been so happy to see the darn devices removed from Prim and Vickâs arms.
Because they were from the Seam, they needed to fill out the wedding certificate at the Justice Building on the other side of the in the Merchant quarter.
âMe either. Itâs insane that Primâs all grown up.â
Gale laughed, âYeah , Rory and I have been ribbing on Vick all day with the older woman bit. Itâs just funny that even though Primâs like two years older than him, she still manages to look younger.â
âYou Hawthorne men look old, or have you forgotten that when we met in the woods, you were 14 but looked like you were 18. I mean right now you look like you can be someoneâs grandfather. Now that weâre talking about it, youâve looked like a grandpa since the day you turned 16.â
âHardy, har, har,â Gale snickered, pointing to his tracker, it read 26. Gale had worn his tracker for the past 14 years. Â A constant reminder that the Capitol owned him.
âWell you canât help it old man,â Katniss joked back. Â
âOld man? youâre  practically an old lady yourself. How old are you? 24? thatâs ancient by Seam standardâs.â
Gale was right, no one in the Seam waited this long. There was only two occasions where a person never found their soulmate.
âMaybe you and I are the new Goat Man and Ripper.â
âWell I do know my way around a distillery, and you do have a Goat.â
âLady does not qualify as a goat, sheâs more of a pet.â
âRemember when you bought Lady for Prim?â
âYou mean with the money we got from the stag I got with my arrow, that you claimed you shot?â Katniss crossed her arms over her chest.
âI still say my arrow was the one that got him.â
âGale you and I both know youâre no marksmith. You canât shoot down a full grown bear standing 20 yards away.â
âMan those were great good old days.â Gale wistfully uttered, his days were now spent in the mines.
So much had changed since she was a child. She looked behind her to see the empty rocking chair. It reminded her of harder times.Â
According to many, becoming soulless was the worst fate someone in Panem could have. But Katniss had seen a different kid of desperation.
She had seen what happened to soulmate when their love was taken away. Her mother had found her soulmate in a man from District 12âs Seam side. Fate brought them together and for a long time they were happy, until he was taken away by illness.
âHow is your dad feeling?â
âGood, if he could stay away from Haymitch and Ripperâs liquor. My maw says he drives her insane, he says she drives him to drink.â
âYour mom then says drive, what drive, we donât even have a car.â They said together. It was an old joke between them.
Galeâs father had survived the great illness thanks to her mother. The Hawthorneâs were lucky. Many were not.
Katniss was eleven when the great epidemic filtered through District 12 and beyond. It affected the Seam the greatest especially those poor souls loveless creatures. When her father became infected, her mother, a healer, tried everything she knew to help save him but her father was too far gone. Â He died shortly after the diagnosis.
Her mother never fully recovered.
âListen Iâve got to go. Iâll see you in less than twenty minutes. Who knew someday youâd be my sister.â
Katniss shook her head, âI guess somethings are meant to be Gale.â
She closed the door and from her vantage point she watched him flirt with Mrs. Andrews. She was glad they were not a match, she and Gale were too alike. They were more like siblings then lovers.
Her mind swirled with images from the past. The constant hunger, the near death, the death of her father, and the loss of the care of her mother.
It became very clear no one cared about dying children, or the sick people of The Seam. The Capitol was more concerned with its own plans. They tightened security around the wall that was erected after the great rebellion was neutralized. The wall cut through the land separating the privileged and the poor. Â The vendors lived in the Merchant Quarters and the workers and the poor lived in the ghettos.
In District 12 they called it the Seam. In District 2 Darius a Peacekeeper said the ghetto was known as the Dungeon.
âKatniss.â
Hearing her sisters words brought Katniss out of her thoughts. She turned around to see Prim dressed in white. âYou look beautiful.â
âNever as pretty as you.â
âOh here, Vick sent this to you.â
Prim blushed as she reached for the box. She opened it and gasped. âBread! real bread for toasting!â
âBread?â Katniss wondered where Vick had gotten it. There wasnât a bakery in the Seam, it wasnât allowed. But once a month. The Baker sold his goods outside of the gate door, but most of the time the bread was stale. Gale would trade with him, when they got a good haul. The last time sheâd tasted fresh bread was when that boy had given her bread./
âItâs still warm Katniss,â Prim touched he bread reverently.
âCan I smell it, â Katniss asked recalling smelling the scent of freshly baked bread. The smell of fresh crust and flaky interior had never left her. Â
âSure, do you remember the last time we had fresh bread Katniss. It was a miracle. We were so hungry.â
Katniss recalled how empty their stomachs were on that hollow day.
Her last resort was to sneak into the Merchant side and rummage in trash cans for food. She found nothing and as she was giving up, a boy appeared by the window. He nodded at her then a few moments later a commotion  from within the walls of the house.
She remembered hearing the painful cry of a child, before the door of the back yard opened. It had been the blond boy whoâd seen her through the window. He had a welt on his face and his big blue eyes held unshed tears. But his chin didnât tremble as he ran out and gave her two loaves of burnt bread.
Katniss had never been able to forget that boy. Sheâd never seen him again. However, no matter what the Capitol did to divide them, Â in her heart she could never forget that boy.
That single act of kindness gave her the strength to carry on. To remember her fatherâs generosity, his dexterity, and his abilities to hunt. Katniss looked down at her wrist, the glaring zeros poised to begin at any moment.
âIt was a miracle, Prim. And today we have another one. Vick and the rest of the Hawthorneâs will be here at any moment. Â Why donât you go get mother?â
âDonât worry, Katniss, someday youâll find your soulmate.â
Katniss hid her grimace. âDonât worry about me little duck, today youâre going to sign the official paperwork, precisely at 1:00 in the afternoon and weâll have a toasting afterwards.â
âI know! Iâm so happy!â Her sister couldnât contain her joy. She was as bright and as delicate as the yellow flowers she was named after.
âKatniss donât forget your pass.â
âDon'tâ worry. I will not forget.â Katniss put on the long sleeve jacket that went with the dress. Katniss was shorter than her mother so the sleeves reached the tip of her fingers, she didnât mind, she was always cold. She was glad it had pockets.
PART TWO - RACE BEGINS:
Prim turned to their mother, âIsnât it a great day for a wedding mom?â
Their mom slowly nodded. âYes dear.â
It really was a breathtaking day, there wasnât a rain cloud in the sky. It was warm, with a pleasant breeze. It was a the perfect day for a wedding.
âItâs really happening,â Prim squealed when she saw Vick arriving. Â
Tears gathered in her eyes, as she watched her sister take in Vick in his suit. He was handsome, as handsome as the rest of the Hawthornes. He was tall like his brother Gale, but his eyes were kinder. His smile softer, and unlike Gale who sported a beard and mustache, Vick always had a five oâclock shadow.
âYou look amazing,â Vick softly said taking Primroseâs hands in his.Â
âThank you for the bread.â She offered.
âEvery bride should have fresh bread on her wedding day.â
âOkay, everyone time to get moving,â Hazelle, Galeâs mom interrupted the tender moment between Prim and Vick.
âYeah some of us are hungry,â Rory shouted.
âWhen arenât you hungry?â Gale muttered.
Katniss chuckled. She wondered how long Gale and Rory would go before one tried to hurt the other.
As they made their way through the Seam, many stepped outside to softly hum the brideâs song.
This was a special time in a young personâs life when the future seemed limitless.
Katniss was the curmudgeon trailing in the back with the full knowledge that life was filled with more hurt than good.
As they approached the wall, the streets became busier since it was the day the merchants sold their wares to the inhabitants of the Seam. Â Everywhere Katniss looked there were men, and she was filled with dread and panic as she saw two young people looking at their trackers as they time slowly ticked down.
The tracker would automatically start when she was near her mate. She took deep even breaths as she followed the wedding party.
When they arrived at the wall, Â the sun in the sky indicated it was noon. Katniss heard Rueâs song being of the giant clock-tower as it struck twelve. Sheâd never seen it but she heard it all of her life. Â On a cold winterâs day the bell could be hear in the Seam, it chimed on the hour.
They stood long in the long line waiting patiently to go up into the small wall border crossing outpost. They moved slowly until they reached where the gate was between the Merchant and the Seam. Katniss kept didnât really look around but the smell of bread caught her attention. Â
The baker was at the wall, with a tall man with curly blond hair. They looked alike, Katniss assumed he was the bakerâs son. He reminded her of the young boy who had given her the bread. Â When he looked in her direction, Katniss swiftly looked the other way.
âPeeta, please give the lady her bread,â his father admonished.
Katniss glanced at him once more when his attention was turned to the woman in front of him. He was broad shouldered, his arms were muscular, and his hands were large but they were careful enough to gently hand the woman her bread. His actions caused her to smile.
âNext,â the Peacekeeper called out.
âCome on Katniss,â Posey, Galeâs baby sister called.
Katniss joined the group as they were allowed in the building. Prim was ahead of them with Vick. Â
Her sister  had her hand linked with Vick, as they spoke with the Peacekeeper. âState the nature of your visit.â
âWe are getting married,â Vickâs deep voice boomed. âOur trackers were removed yesterday by the Seam Magistrate.â
The Peacekeeper checked their passes. âCongratulations on your nuptials, may the odds be  in your favor.â
âThank you,â Prim gushed.
One by one they went through the checkpoints. They were all in a festive mood as they entered past the checkpoints and headed toward the Justice Building. Katniss paused at the looming clocktower, itâs shadow cast the town square in darkness. Â When they arrived they discovered their appointment was set back a hour.
The small party waited in the lobby of the building waiting to be called to sign the paperwork. Â They had all of the time in the world.
âOnly fifteen more minutes before weâre married,â Vick said quietly for Prim to hear, but Katniss overheard it.
Her sister gazed up at Vick and her pale blue eyes shined with happiness. Katniss swallowed as she recalled the harshness she had to experience. Their mother Lillian stood just feet away, a pale shadow of the woman sheâd been. Â
Katniss shuddered the at the prospect of becoming someone like her mother. It was why sheâd  decided to not interact with men. She didnât want to find her soul mate. Her mother Lillian, had slowly come back from her depression, but there were days she returned  to the rocking chair.
In the beginning, her mother spent months in her rocking chair simply existing, without words, vacantly staring out into the void. Katniss barely got her to eat or bathe. At age eleven, Katniss had become an adult, taking on the responsibilities that were beyond her years. She tried, but with the illness no one opened their doors to orphaned children.
âEverdeen and Hawthorne,â a young woman called out with a clipboard.
âYes?â Prim stood up.
âThank you for your patience. As a reward, youâve been selected to have a wedding ceremony by the Head Magistrate.â
Only a few received this honor. It was fitting that it should be Prim and Vick. âThank you,â Prim whispered.
âThis way, please.â
Everyone followed the woman into the Head Magistrateâs office.
The head magistrate was a woman with mile high pink hair and an outfit that had white doves all over it.
âWelcome, welcome.â The woman stood and she had the strangest shoes Katniss had ever seen. âI am Head Magistrate Effie Trinket.â
âA pleasure maâam,â Vick nodded.
âOh my, you are a tall one,â Effie said as she looked up at Vick. Her eyes scanned all four Hawthorne men. âYou certain are a handsome lot.â
Gale grinned, and Katniss rolled her eyes.
âAre we ready for the ceremony?â
Prim eagerly nodded.
âGood you stand here my dear,â Effie instructed Prim and then turned her attention to Vick, â and your beloved over here.â
All the attention was on Primrose and Vick as they solemnly stood before their families and the Head Magistrate.
âDearly beloved weâve come together to witness  this woman, Primrose Everdeen join this man, Vick Hawthorne, in the sacred bond of marriage.â Addressing the groom and bride, she asked, âAre you ready to take the vows to uphold the laws of marriage as decreed in the statues of Panem?â
âWe do,â Prim and Vic said united.
âDo you promise to keep the other in health and in sickness. To stand by the other in good times and harsh times?â
Katniss watched Galeâs parents exchange loving looks. Her mother turned pale. Katniss lowered her head and glanced down at her shoes, tucking her hands in her jacketâs pocket.
âWe do,â Prim and Vick replied.
âThe by the power vested in me, by our beloved President, Corilanius Snow, and the Country of Panem, I now pronounce you, husband and wife.â Effie Trinket joyfully exclaimed, âYou may kiss the bride.!
Katniss looked away as Prim and Vick kissed.
âNow if you could please sign the certificate.â
Katniss watched as her sister wrote Primrose Everdeen for the last time. It was a bittersweet moment. She was losing her sister to someone else. Albeit it was to Vick, and he was moving in with them, but things were changing.
Maybe she should start thinking of it as gaining a brother, instead of losing his baby sister.
âWho are the two witnesses?â Effie Trinket asked.
Katniss stepped forward with Gale.
Gale signed first and handed the pen to her. Katniss took the pen, and pushed down her sleeves. Smiling she glanced up at her friends and family as she poised to sign her name. But everyone looked shocked and ashen. Katniss frowned.
Her first instinct was to search for Prim to make sure she was alright. Primâs eyes were wide, her face pale. Â Her sister had clamped her hand over her mouth and was pointing to her arm. Katniss glanced down at herself, thatâs when she noticed the timer on the tracker had begun itâs count down.
Everything in the room became still as it suddenly dawned on Katniss, her race had begun.
