I want to compare our opinions about Pete so hand them down!

Aww, how kind of you. A certain someone would ask "Why compare?", but we'll ignore his philosophical ramblings this time :3 How I feel about Pete He's literally changed the trajectory of my entire life, so... I kind of hate him (affectionate) ❤️ All the people I ship romantically with Pete / My non-romantic OTP for Pete Here's where I beg to differ, because I ship Pete with (almost) everybody! I just want to pass him around to *all* the men and see what comes out of it. It doesn't have to be romantic in the typical sense, it doesn't have to be good, hell it doesn't even have to be hot, it just has to have a dynamic that will make my brain go brrr. Besides VegasPete, which is the obvious choice, some of my favourites include PorschePete, ArmPete, KinnPete and KimPete, each of them for completely different reasons:

PorschePete have, what me and @wretchedamaranth love to call, a "secret third thing" of a relationship. Not platonic, not romantic, but something else, something only they can understand. I've written them this way before and I just love it so fucking much.

ArmPete represents my desperate need for someone to fall utterly in love with Pete and not have their feelings reciprocated; this is where Arm comes in. I have around 3k words of fic written for them, but it'll probably never see the light of day.

KinnPete is just bad vibes galore. They have negative sexual energy together, but their dynamic is screaming at me to notice, and I can't say I haven't. The true pet play dynamic, if we're being honest.

KimPete is... I don't even know how to describe it. I think what makes me go crazy about them (to the point of writing 25k words of pre-canon material for how their relationship came to be) is how similar, yet different they are as characters. Both closed off, both unwilling to share parts of themselves due to not even knowing themselves enough to do so, both such intricate puzzles to solve. Everything Kim is different from Pete, he's similar to Vegas, but not to the point of them being the same person. I don't know, I really, really like this one.

As for my non-romantic OTP, it has to be Macau&Pete. I have never been this obsessed with a platonic relationship that was barely shown in canon before. I have to thank Lusn and her brilliant fics once again, I'm never getting over them - I have someone's birthday gift to write after all ❤️ My unpopular opinion about Pete God, I have so many. I'll share 2 at the top of my head without explaining myself; I'd rather not be a nuisance about my niche opinions for the millionth time:

Pete isn't a masochist or into degradation or into pet play. The main thing I believe he is very much into - which is intensely backed up by canon - is being the most sub to ever sub.

I don't think Pete killed his father. I don't think he ever thought of killing his father. I don't think he ever wanted to kill his father.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with Pete in canon

Fuck, that's such a tough question. Honestly, I am starving for more safehouse moments, especially between episodes 11-12, because they skipped Pete getting better - or at least as better as he could get. So I'd add more scenes of Pete being sick in the show, and one moment I'd loved the show to have expanded upon is when Vegas found Pete unconscious and at the verge of death in episode 11. Vegas nourishing Pete back to health when he has no idea what the fuck he's doing while crying his eyes out? Damn I need this so much it makes me want to cry myself.

Dear netflix: what the fuck. this show is only really four seasons.

it's like the opposite of what cartoon network did to Steven Universe:

TRUE STORY the actual over-arching plot/backstory of SU doesn't start until halfway through its first season, literally episodes 25 and 26, which were MEANT to be a cliffhanger and then the first episode of the second season, instead of partway through season one.

But a lot of character and world-building does happen before that. So when people aren't sure whether to attempt to watch all of SU (it's......a LOT) I tell them to watch until Lapis Lazuli shows up, because if they don't like at that point, they're not going to --but 90% of the people I know get to those episodes are are like WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?? WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT???? and keep watching and meanwhile I just cackle because congrats, you're one of us now, have fun being confused!!! It only gets worse!! :)))

(Like seriously every tiny bit of the plot being pushed forward is dependent on more of the backstory/lore being revealed. So much of the plot is just dependent on huge amounts of history and trauma that we learn about at the same time as Steven.)

Also keep in mind each episode is like 11 or 12 minutes, and that's including the intro/credits. It's painfully easy to marathon SU because any single episode is short so you always think "oh just one more" and the next thing you know six hours has gone by.

And lemme tell you, I have seen both of those mentioned in fics repeatedly. Mostly Catra seeing Adora's scars and feeling guilt and shame. But one fic has Catra realize she never told Adora that the smashing-on-rocks thing broke a few ribs.

I've hit the image limit despite deleting a few and didn't want to do another two-parter but there's a moment when everyone's like YAY WE WON WOOO and Scorpia and Catra take off in a skiff and Adora watches them go with a face that shows her mixed emotions.

(I have so many thoughts on this, like yay she saved the world (for now), but her friend she's known the longest hates her guts and refuses to be near her except to do a violence, like at least Catra's alive and clearly going to be okay, but I'm sure Adora's trying to do a whole "but we won, so it's fine, everything is fine")

Also Mermista lets Sea Hawk put an arm around her and actually says "Really good job" to him in a way that sounds genuine (given their expressions they totally boned later)

And then She-Ra gets hugged and thanked by Angella and her eyes do a "omg I'm so happy" as she turns back into Adora

And then Catra and Entrapta and Scorpia have a chat with Hordak and knowing what I know about later plot I'm laughing bc this is the first time Entrapta and Hordak interact, and Hordak is like ">:( you failed" and Entrapta's cheerfully all ":D no we didn't! Abusers to lovers. I don't understand it. I like enemies to lovers but when it gets physical I just cant. It's not right.

Humon, I didnt think of them much when i first read the book, but then i stumbled across some fan fiction and now i have been influenced heavily and i cannot go back.

iko an kinney, they had one scene together, which they showed obvious hate, theres almost no fan stuff to persuade someone so i dont really get how people see it.

Honey Harper and Ace or Leroy. I don't believe any of the anarchist were truly love with each other. (I believe Honey was attracted to Aces power but not much more.)

And hate me if u will I don't like Nobell or NovaxRuby. Ruby and Oscar are made for each other. Quite literally soulmates (in my opinion). So it feels weird to match them with other people.

As for Nobell, I just don't see it. One, I just kinda don't like cannon Danna. Head cannon Danna i would die for but thats off topic. Danna hates the anarchist, it shows multiple times throughout the book she believes the councils code is right. Nova doesn't. Plus Nova held her captive WITH THE ANARCHISTS and that has to be a bit traumatizing. They might mend their relationship but I don't think enough for them to be a couple (i see them as more of power badass besties / Brotp) Also I like Narcissa and Danna (for the same reason as oscarxruby). It would be a bit hard for them (again with the different views and all) but at least theirs no previous hate between them.

Mal and Evie from Decedants. "Sisterly Love" my ass they were in love and deep down we all know it.

All, im a little sensitive to strong emotions. Like i wont cry (usually) but if theres a cute scene, the either fluffy or angsty feeling will stick with me all day. As for smut, i like it but it doesnt stick with me after reading it.

20. Do you prefer bigger fanbases or smaller ones?

Idk, iv only ever been in smaller or dead ones. I hear that big fan bases get really toxic real fast (so may opinions and all so i get it). But i see... not mean but not entirely friendly people in small ones too. I guess small ones bc you can interact (even i get brave enough) with a lot more of the community and you can see fan stuff for almost everyone.

Not personally but I know people hate Humon with a burning passion and i get kinda anxious that they'll hate me too. i get paranoid real fast.

Wolfet: The train scene in Scarlet and literally all of Winter.

OscarxRuby(really gotta learn their ship name): the part where they played videogames. it was short but sweet. WHEN THEY CUDDLED ON THE STAKEOUT! when oscar asked her out, it was kinda weird (timing ya know. people literally just got massacured) but the little speech he made was really cute (what is up with confessing love right after someone dies in the books)

Humon: When Simon bid on the pie for Hugh when hes a cake lover. I love sacrifice (i also love food) and when Hugh ran to Simon when the bees hit attacked him, although it was kinda his job as a husband to do that. i dont have many canon ones for them.

Nodrian: the whole trilogy. how can u expect me to unravel all that in a few sentences. i just cannot.

Jacinter (pretty sure i did not spell that right): when he faked her death. It was G O L D and the way jacin sat bu her bedside 24/7 was so damn cute.

I have many more non cannon shipping scenes to canon. it didnt really ucure to be now that 1/2 my thoughts on books were fake.

Their cool. I dont personally read them much and when i do i never think of me in the situations. I read it as any other thing in short.

Support what you want. Don't care if other people don't like it or harass you for it. You like what you want. If you want character a and b *(+) to be together do it. It's nobody's business but urs. (Unless it's pedophilia, abusive or any of that stuff the just stop)

I know that you don't want to me to ask about Percabeth submissive stuff craps- but bear with me a second. *takes a deep breath* Okay, so, we know that Percy's Ach. Heel ties to Annabeth, because of she's the person who connects Percy to the mortal world and it makes me ask actually that, why, it wasn't Sally instead of Annabeth? I don't get it, so make me understand pls.

Yeah no those kinda questions are okay, I just don’t want things that make me actively think about my NOTPs in a romantic relationship.

This one is really easy to answer! Because Riordan is really very in love with his OTP! Simple as that! That’s why PJO had to end in an “epic” underwater kiss, that even got turned into a tapestry by one of their villains because look at how epic it is, an underwater kiss instigated by the entire camp even though they had literally just lost their siblings and friends in a war but oh yeah sure they all ship them so hard that they cheer for that underwater kiss, that’s why Gaia wanted both their blood very specifically, that’s why Percy inexplicably was allowed to remember Annabeth’s face when he had no memories even though Hera is the goddess of family and her making Percy only remember his mother’s face would have made 200% more sense - and that’s wh Annabeth is his anchor.

Because no one in the history of shipping’s been more in love with their own ship than Riordan. Seriously, it’s one of the most obnoxious parts about his writing. Like, I totally get loving your own ship and there can be a fun and cute element in having the best friends also ship them in-universe, but… there’s a limit. You can go overboard. He definitely went overboard. If you make absolutely everybody in-universe ship them you’re not actually writing a good relationship, you’re using those exlamations from third parties as props to make your ship seem more valid without actually putting the work in.

And I’m… not a fan of the “teenager mees their True Love” nonsense. At all. It’s incredibly unrealistic, because boy you’re 16, you’re a child, you’re barely grasping what love is yet, this is your first love. But for Riordan, that means first and only, as proven by all of his ships. Not just this one, this isn’t even just about Perc@beth. It’s literally all of them.

That’s why he retconned Nico’s literal love confession into “a safe crush” because it can’t possibly stand that Nico was in love before getting together with his first boyfriend. That’s why even though Reyna was the first name Jason remembered and he remembered her distinctively as “there was a girl”, implying romantic feelings, that was retconned away into one-sided love from Reyna too because Piper as his endgame had to be Jason’s first girlfriend and first love. That’s why Rachel became the oracle because her first love chose someone else over her so she’s gotta make the decision to stay an eternal virgin from now on.

It’s… honestly a very bad trope in my opinion, because it should be more normalized that, especially as a kid, you fall in love and you fall out of love, you get your heart broken, you date people you might not even love, you make life experiences.

But this “they met when they were 12 and were each other’s first love and are now at 17 planning the white picked fenced future together” is… a lot.

So yeah, that’s the reason. The reason Annabeth is the anchor for Percy is because Riordan needs to use every single opportunity to show that in fact they are The Ideal Ship and that Absolutely Everybody Should Love Them.

It’s a very bad pick in my opinion - and not just because I don’t ship them, but because Percy is literally still a kid and his mother was the one anchor throughout his life and after everything they went through with Gabe, she really should have also been his literal anchor.

Okay I've been puzzling over this for a few days so I'll just ask, I don't understand what you mean when you say it's disrespectful to write about John's actual death in fic. why/how is it disrespectful?

why wouldn’t it be disrespectful? 

you have to consider that fanfic, for the most part, is just a bunch of thirsty fans writing wish fulfillment. very very few set out to write accurate, biographical retellings of the events that took place during the beatles’ lives, mostly because those things already exist, and there’s like… no need for anyone to rehash it unless they’re like conducting their own interviews or something. but in that case, you’re no longer writing a fanfic. what i’m getting at here is that fic is kind of a frivolous medium, in the grand scheme of things, which makes it unfit for certain topics (the most extreme example being using the holocaust as a backdrop for some shitty love story with a nazi guard and a jewish person as your otp. the argument here isn’t that holocaust stories should never be told; in mature, respectful hands, holocaust stories can be told in a poignant, informative way–see schindler’s list or the boy in the striped pajamas, to name a couple–but it should never be reduced to like a porno fantasy sequence).

there is a gray area when it comes to writing fic, though. a lot of people use writing as a way to cope with their own experiences, so while one could argue that topics such as abuse and rape are too complex to be used as a backdrop for a love story (because, let’s face it, the majority of fics are love stories), we don’t know what the author has experienced. in my opinion, it’s not unreasonable for a young writer (say 12 or 13 years old) who has experienced abuse to write a story in which the hot next door neighbor swoops in and saves them from their circumstances and gives them a better life. on the surface, this is a “problematic” story, but a young writer wouldn’t know that or care, they just wish it would happen. which brings us back to my first point: fanfiction is wish fulfillment. 

so my question is: why on earth would a fan wish for john to be dead? why would you wish to see paul grieving? why would you want to give his murderer any more attention than he already has? that’s the real kicker here, for me. writing about john’s death is different because he was actually murdered. to make his murderer as a character in your fic is like… so gross. to be fair, i think there’s a difference between telling a fic where john and/or paul just happen to die in a fictional way that makes sense with the plot of your story. i just don’t think john’s real death should be taken lightly. 

the fics i’ve stumbled upon that touch on his death (i’ve never read one that was about his death specifically, but it’s been thrown into other fics without reason or warning) use it solely evoke “feels” or make you cry or whatever. if an author can’t make you feel something without bringing up a real life tragedy and reminding you that someone you love is literally dead, i have to question if they’re a good writer at all. it’s an easy, guaranteed way to upset your audience. 

there’s a fic i’ve read (i won’t mention it by name, but i’m sure most of us have read it) that is literally a get together fic starting when john and paul first met. it’s a sweet little story about them falling in love, all pre-fame, but throughout the fic paul has these random premonitions which make him push john away or whatever. so that right there is like just a forced, random conflict and the fic would have honestly been more enjoyable without it. but at the end of the fic, when they finally get together and all is well, the author ends it with something like “but we all know they can’t live happily ever after as john’s life ended on december 8th, 1980 as paul had predicted…” like?? okay?? that literally had nothing to do with the story. it was just supposed to be one last punch in the gut, i guess, and that’s what i find disrespectful. a real person’s actual murder shouldn’t be used for shock value. the fic i mentioned is like 200k; it should be able to make the audience feel something without ending it with “lmao but they’ll never be happy because john is dead.” do you understand? 

again, i’ve never read a fic that is focused specifically on the day john died and paul’s reaction to it, and i imagine that some of them must exist as a coping mechanism. i would never contact any of these authors directly or like try to tell them they’re wrong, because it’s impossible to know their motivation; maybe they had a loved one who died, or was murdered, and they’re using writing as a way to understand their own feelings. that’s totally fine. i would encourage it, even. that being said, i can’t help but side-eye some of the people i’ve seen planning fics like this, when they’re like “i’m writing a 1980 fic and you guys are going to cry your eyes out paul is going to suffer >:))))” 

like. what is wrong with you. why would you do that. these are real people, paul did suffer, and that pain is not our playground. god there’s even a gifset that goes around which shows paul in the 80s tearing up while listening to one of john’s songs, and someone added a caption like “he’s so hot while he’s grieving.” like that is so fucked up?? 

writing about john’s death because you think paul is hot while he grieves, or because you like “paul in pain” stories, or because, for some fucked up reason, you want to write about death in graphic detail, then you’re being disrespectful. i don’t see any way around this. unless you’re very young or very fortunate, someone in your life has died. how would you feel if people were exploiting that and using it as a backdrop for some quasi-love story? 

like, true, it’s very unlikely that paul would ever see our fanfiction (though there are fucked up kids who tweeted images and links to fucking red hall during his twitter q&a and got their asses blocked–good riddance), but i think if we respect him as a person, and respect his feelings and realize that this is something he actually lived through and has to deal with to this day, not some quick little story that you can read for “feels” and will be over in 30 minutes, it becomes unimaginable to use that for entertainment. 

like i mentioned earlier, i’m sure it’s totally possible to write an informative and respectful retelling of john’s death. i just don’t think it could ever happen in fanfiction. it’s not the right medium. 

fanfic is a great, safe way to explore all kinds of topics and kinks, but when real people are involved, that changes things a little. if you want to expand on someone’s murder and tell a story about it, then you should probably write about fictional characters instead imo.
