worldbuilding in spiritkeep

okay howdy again :) the second place winner of the spiritkeep poll was to talk about worldbuilding!!

for new folks, spiritkeep is a multiplayer campaign ttrpg designed around inducing therapeutic emotional growth

so … worldbuilding!!

collaborative worldbuilding is actually the first stage of play, even before you make your characters. i took inspiration from yarnspinner by edda mendes and spool by jade ravens especially, as well as the community building aspect of songs for the dusk by kavita poduri

there are a few things about the world of spiritkeep that always stay the same:

1) this is a fantasy world with low/no tech, and medium-high magic (i think some people would call it low magic because the pcs aren't terribly powerful, there isn't a spellcasting system, and also because they're used to thinking of high magic as looking specifically like medieval european fantasy. but there is actually a lot of magic in this world even if a typical human isn't particularly high powered)

2) there are various lineages of human, but all the pcs are human. (a notable exception is the othered archetype, which includes paragons for werecreatures, changelings, and ghosts. these characters are still humanoid though!) the lineages include what we would think of as regular humans and then various kinds of people, diverse in appearance and beliefs, who are descended from humans blessed or cursed by spirits. we'll get more into that next time!!

3) the world is inhabited by humans, animals, and spirits. the worlds of spiritkeep are animist and inspired by nature religions. in particular, i took a lot of inspiration from slavic paganism, shintoism, and various indigenous american religions but most specifically diné religion. in spiritkeep, many aspects of nature and daily life have spirits, from homes to rivers to trees. many spirits have minor magical abilities, and most will stay fairly hidden or out of the way, but there are rarer spirits who are quite powerful. parties will have to interact with spirits sometimes, such as doing favors for or solving problems for them to get boons

4) humans also have their own spirits. there are times when these spirits become independent & tangible enough to interact with. this is how pcs get advancements, boons, and can change playbooks. your spirit can also be harmed, though, so watch out!

5) the game always takes place in a community that is struggling and in need of repair

the rest of the world is up to the players to flesh out during the session zero!!

the session zero includes worldbuilding and community building. players will decide on details about the major cities, cultures, and geographic features in the area. they'll also work together to decide on more thematic elements like conflicts between groups of people, spiritual traditions, or the presence of bigotry within the world (yes, there can definitely be explorations of bigotry in spiritkeep. i am not an ascriber to cozy game escapist fantasy culture and i dont think those work well for the purpose of this game)

after a broad sketch of the world is laid out, the group turns to building the community. here, they'll focus on a few aesthetic features of the community, community values, and a few major features (does the community have a doctor or no? do they have a post office? is this a farming community or do they trade textiles? what are people's houses made of? etc)

i have a general idea on how to make the collaborative worldbuilding process approachable, cooperative, and safe, but it definitely needs playtesting before i explain :) im approaching this with the mindset of 1) players hard no's will have already been discussed in a separate process 2) players might be strangers to each other and might have never played a ttrpg before. i also want it to be feasible both in person and on a vtt. so i'm still working that out :)

so that's the basics! a baseline that all games follow, while the cultures and settings within the world are still pretty flexible

next up i'll be talking about the lineages, or the different kinds of human you can be!!

They were rescued along with their two little siblings after the farm they lived in was attacked by heretics, fanatics of a certain ex-god of chaos, which got Miyu to grow quite scared and resentful towards said god. The problem? They interact with him everyday…oh but don’t worry, it’s not like they know it’s him, so it should be fine, right?

Obligatory disclaimer for whenever I post about this I’m talkin bout medieval England specifically! Because to be completely honest I know. Not much at all about other places.

Just gonna quick fire some ideas if y’all want elaborations on any let me know!!!

- I think exploring the differences between working class sorcerers and sorcerers in the nobility could be really interesting. As well as how those groups interact, seeing as how for much of the medieval period wealthier sorcerers would have pretty direct power over smaller communities (think feudalism)

- Speaking of feudalism. I really like the idea of sorcerer knights (vassals) providing military service etc for a mortal lord. I feel like it could be funny, just this one mortal guy that keeps unknowingly making fealty oaths with and giving land to sorcerers + supporting magical communities.

- Around the 12th century I think? You got people moving to towns to seek opportunities outside of farming. And I wonder if sorcerers also did this? We know magical communities were essentially an escape from mortal society, but I’d be interested to know if around this time you got sorcerers and mortals mingling more, n their communities starting to merge again? Or did sorcerers stick together and establish urban settlements that remained separate? Much to consider.

- Considering trades were generally passed down through generations, do we think some that died out in mortal society were kept alive by sorcerers? Given they were living much longer, I’d assume they’d also continue doing what they’d been taught and were used to for longer- so maybe techniques for making clothes that were lost to time for mortals due to technological advancement stuck around within magical communities.

- Similar to above, do we think sorcerers maybe stuck to the same fashion for longer? I think it’d be funny if magical communities just looked suspiciously outdated or out of time.

- I choose to believe the practice of tattooing sigils is Old As Fuck- and tattoos weren’t by any means unheard of over the Middle Ages (as broad as that time period is), and they had. Quite a few purposes. What I’m saying is I want to see medieval sorcerers with a combination of period typical (yes I’m aware how broad the period is) tattoos/body art plus sigils. It would be fun I think.

- So fun fact the term “dark ages” came from renaissance writers and scholars that were essentially being snobby lil assholes (the medieval period was by no means lacking in innovation, art, etc. there just wasn’t as much surviving documentation). And I headcanon sorcerers that lived during both periods would’ve been salty as fuck about it.

SO IF I HAD TO EXPLAIN HER GENERAL STORY...

HERE is a google doc to a longer, more detailed version of her backstory.

TLDR; she would visit her grandparents' orchard every summer as a child and get violently haunted by slendersick ghosts. because the ghosts deteroiated her mind, she would try to kill a ghost when she was 12, only to realize it was a real woman. She dragged the body deep into the forest (which slenderman ending up eating) and did not return to the orchard until she was (18/19/20). the story that follows varies from AU to AU

SO THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AUS...

the 'main' AU i used Bonnie in is a personal AU between my irl friends called Washed Up. it takes place in a fictional beach town we made called Almyros Coast, set in SoCal. . . AND THAT AU IS SPLIT INTO TWO AUS LOL. theres a more fun one that we use to let our OCs interact with the canon creeps and worldbuild with. theres a second version where ghosts still follow bonnie, which are victims of a serial killer that has been stalking bonnie's best friend, camila. antics ensue and the story is unfinished!

i have the 'Creeped' bonnie, which doesnt really have a huge story. i just insert her into my Creeped AU, where she lives on the farm that the proxies work on. this is VERY recent cuz of some anons asking abt it, so i dont really have a story for it. i dont intend to give bonnie a notable place in my Canon Creeped Au, but in a world where Bonnie is an important character, she'd be used to figure out paranormal issues in the forest

PVP civilization was unexpectedly good

I really liked parkciv but it was more of a lighthearted thing and it was also a bit silly. It was really fun and the premise and worldbuilding allowed for a lot of messing around BUT im not here to talk about it

There were a few uh not really faults? But things in Parkour Civilization that set my expectations for the next series. Then I got in PVPciv and it got me off guard

A few things that did make sense but were a bit silly and jokey in parkciv had similar equivalents in pvpciv--like the guards accepting bribes XDD--but here things seemed way more grounded. The guards don't just do that because well pvp is the coin here and we watch it bc it's good and cool; they have to take hits to level up, so it's in their best interest to accept bribes. And unlike parkciv where a few questions went unanswered--they weren't needed for the story--here it all gets a bit more of development. Not everyone likes pvp and wants to rank up because Yes. They are forced to, who refuses to pvp just dies, and people want to rank up to live longer lives

The plot was really nice, the character development was also REALLY endearing to see--im always a fan of character developing along with their skills

The exposition was also really really cool and at every layer it'd get cooler

We had a lot of fun characters too (and they had names which is always a plus) and they all got interactions and screentime and!!! Anyways I loved each and every one of them. Even the villains or the PVP-speak guy.

Also the whump???? I was not expecting that. I love characters that die over and over and over again and then him being farmed for it???? Having to die for his friend? That was awesome. Sacrificial lamb arc. It also lasted for a bit longer than I had dared hope for so I was really pleased

The angst at the end was also really cool. I'm excited for the next season

Also the little characterization details! "Oh yea Evbo has a shopping problem" "Evbo is not very good as a player and probably not the best choice for being the chosen one" "Evbo talks a lot and he loves mansions and recording his thoughts" and gosh that was amazing

Anyway, my ramblings and thoughts about this

Firstly, ‘We learn about Purple’s Origins’ is rather interesting. Because, well. Purple is from AVM not AVA. If this is the truth then:

-Well, we get to see Purple’s origins

-Purple might be in AVA

-MT might be in AVA

ALTHOUGH. We do have some sort of “evidence” that Purple might be in AVA. The short ‘Cherry Blossoms’ where there is a wanted poster of Chosen in the background while Purple is walking.

(do keep aware this could’ve just been another “hint” or something to AVA9(I think it’s AVA9? The Wanted Episode, y’know what I mean)

Secondly, ‘We see the Mercenaries interact for the first time’ This is simple. I do think that if this whole ‘1 truth, 2 lies’ thing is for real, then this would be the MOST likely one to be true. I don’t really have that much thoughts for this one, except if this episode is either entirely or partially about the backstory (either victim’s or Mercs) this would be most likely to be the truth.

(I may add to this if I get an idea,, Also please comment if you have a thought you’d like to share)

Thirdly, ‘Victim builds a chicken coop’ this personally is my favorite and it’s extremely interesting. Because well, WHY would this be an option..? Option 1 (Purp’s origin) and Option 2 (Merc’s 1st interaction) are something reasonable. But Option 3 (Vic builds a chicken coop) is really unexpected and peculiar. This option stands out.

Because I mean, we wouldn’t expect the villain(?) of AVA S3 to build a CHICKEN COOP of all things.

Personally, I would like this option to be true because.. victim building a chicken coop sounds funny and some what adorable(?) in a way. Maybe this is a backstory for Vic. I dunno.

if it’s not a backstory for Vic then I have no idea if this is even real.

The sheep in the sneak peak is telling me otherwise.. BECAUSE WHY WOULD THERE BE SHEEP IF VIC WASN’T IDK A FARMER-

(In this next part you can tell I was thinking random thoughts.. I was doing this while I was drawing so help :’) .)

That I'll be happy someday. JUST KIDDING. (Mostly.)

So here's the deal: I treat conspiracy theories like extended universe fanfiction for the real world. I don't believe in stuff I can't prove (Might sound wild but I'm pretty logical at heart) and they're theories for a reason. But I love diving into them like theyre part of a weird narrative written by the internet itself.

My favorite right now? Anything related to Agartha and the Hollow Earth. I don't believe a fraction of it, but it's fascinating. The lore just keeps growing. Like, you start with "there's a hidden civilization inside the Earth" and end up neck-deep in: Free Masons, Atlantis and Lemuria drama, mole people, apocryphal religious texts pulled wildly out of context, real-life cave systems that are definitely entrances to secret worlds, weird Russian military encounters in Antarctica, UFOs HIDING in Antarctica and/or in Agartha.

Also shout out to Reddit and 4chan turning this all into a collaborative and very much interactive fanfic! I just love facebook uncles making infographics and playing around with pseudoscience.... Can't wait to turn into one of them someday.

Anyways, recently I stumbled on a sub-branch of this whole thing where people have woven the Bucegi Mountains into it. Which I devoured, obviously, because I live near them. Gotta engage with the local lore.

But if we're talking all-time, my ultimate favorite is false history. Like the idea that huge chunks of what we accept as history have been edited, deleted, rewritten or straight up made up. And we'll never know the truth because the sources were buried before we were born.

Also: the Dead Internet Theory is getting harder to laugh off lately. As someone who uses 4chan a lot, it's very easy to feel like something's off. Like yeah, maybe the internet really did die sometime and now we're all just talking to bots, corporate ghosts, and weird AIs trained on each other's content in a loop. Maybe that's why everything feels uncanny and like an echo lately.

Maybe we are in the content farm and the harvest was us.

Other favorites: cryptids, UFOs, Mandela effects, unsourced weird facts that no one can prove are real but also no one can confidently say aren't. Im obsessed with the possibility. If it's eerie, half-plausible, and totally unverifiable? Inject it straight into my brain. No nutritional value and yet I'll eat it up every single time

Also, and I don't usually talk about this much, but I do believe the media we consume is shaped by something. A higher power? A structure? A filter? Whatever it is, it's not random. I don't like naming it or giving it personality. But you can feel it. Sometimes it's subtle. Sometimes it's really, really not.

“Sparkling,” one of the others said with a snort.

“No, no—‘sparkling water’ is what you mean,” said another voice, American, manager-type, slick hair and a phone glued to his hand. He laughed under his breath. “Jesus, man, it’s not that hard.”

His jaw clenched. A flicker of irritation crossed his face—not at himself, but at the mockery. You caught it.

Without thinking, you leaned in.

“You meant sparkling water?” you asked gently. “You said it right. Some people say fizzy, but ‘sparkling’ is perfect.”

His eyes found yours.

Dark. Sharp. And surprised.

He nodded slowly. “Yes. Sparkling, thank you.”

You smiled—genuine this time. “Got it.”

That was your first interaction with Damiano David, lead singer of Måneskin. Not that you knew that. You didn’t recognize him. Not when he ordered his carbonara. Not when he teased his bandmates in Italian under his breath. You just worked. Smiled. Moved.

You didn’t know who he was. You just saw someone getting laughed at for trying.

You'd seen it before. Your father still mixed his English and Ilocano. Your mother once cried on the phone when a bank teller mocked her. You remembered all of it.

You didn’t see his eyes follow you as you moved behind the counter. You didn’t notice how he leaned in when you laughed at a joke from the cook. You didn’t hear the way his bandmates started teasing him for watching the waitress.

Because you weren’t trying to charm anyone. You were surviving. You were being kind because you knew what it felt like when people weren’t.

You weren’t flirtatious. You didn’t hover. You just worked. Table to table. You wiped down a spill, took a child’s order seriously, even helped the dishwasher carry a box of supplies to the back.

Damiano didn’t get that often. The world he lived in—the chaos of fame, the rush of stages and hotel lobbies and interviews—was rarely gentle. He was used to bold. Used to sex appeal and drama and cameras.

You were gentle in a world that wasn’t. And that was rare.

The table got louder. Laughter spilled out as they argued about their next show. The American manager had opinions. Too many.

“Just try not to say that on stage,” the same manager from earlier said, waving a hand. “You guys sound sexy, but some of the phrasing is… off.”

“I said ‘we play naked,’” Damiano said, slowly. “That’s not wrong.”

Another chuckle. “Yeah, but maybe say ‘shirtless’ instead of ‘naked.’ It’s just cleaner. You sounded like you were doing porn, not music.”

You were setting down their second round of drinks when you chimed in softly.

“Shirtless is probably better here,” you offered, gently placing the glass near him. “But… ‘naked’ isn’t wrong. Just dramatic.”

He looked up. You weren’t mocking. Your tone was dry, a little amused, but never cruel.

“I like dramatic,” he murmured.

You raised an eyebrow. “Then you should use it.""

“Grazie,” he murmured.

You dipped your head. “Prego.”

He blinked at your accent. It wasn’t good. But it was honest.

Then you disappeared again.

He asked your name when you brought the check.

You raised an eyebrow but answered anyway. “Y/N.”

“Y/N,” you answered simply, wiping your hands on your apron. “And don’t worry, your English is fine. Better than half the tourists we get.”

“You’re not from here?” he asked.

You shook your head. “No one here really is.”

He smiled at that.

You didn’t ask his name. Still didn’t know him. Still didn’t care.

“I think,” he said slowly, “you’re the first person here not to laugh at me.”

You glanced at him. “That’s because there was nothing to laugh at.”

He stared.

And for the first time in days, he felt calm.

The calm didn’t last.

The second you turned your back, the chaos came in. Someone must’ve leaked that the band was eating there. One second, the restaurant was half-full. The next?

Camera flashes hit the windows like lightning. Within minutes, your tiny, warm restaurant was a zoo. You looked up from clearing a table and saw it: dozens of phones pressed against the glass. Screaming. Shouting. Måneskin signs in marker.

Panic flickered through the staff. Mrs. Bellucci shouted something in Italian. The manager ducked and cursed.

You moved.

Straight to the back booth.

“Come with me,” you said to the band. Calm. Sharp. “Now.”

No one hesitated.

You led them behind the bar, through a metal door marked Employees Only, down a tight hallway that smelled like lemon cleaner and sweat. Then out a back door that opened to the alley where the kitchen deliveries were dropped off. No fans. No cameras.

You held the door open, stepping aside to let them pass.

“Go quick,” you said. “Before they figure it out.”

The band’s American team turned to you. One of them offered you a folded bill.

You held up a hand. “I’m not taking that.”

They blinked.

“This is my job,” you said.

Damiano stared.

You smiled. Just enough. “Helping people escape chaos is just a perk.”

Victoria let out a soft laugh. “You’re cool.”

“Don’t let the apron fool you.”

And then, finally, Damiano stepped through the door, last to leave. He paused in the frame, that chain around his neck glinting in the low light.

“You know,” he said, “I meet a lot of people. Loud ones. Big ones. Crazy ones.”

You leaned against the doorframe. “I bet.”

“You’re the first one I wanted to stay with.”

That caught you off guard.

But you didn’t show it.

You just said, “Then stay quiet about where you eat next time,” and let the door close softly behind him.

Later, back inside, you leaned against the bar, exhaling.

Mrs. Bellucci patted your shoulder. “Nice save.”

You smiled. “Just trying to keep the restaurant from burning down.”

You didn’t expect to hear from them again. You didn’t think he’d remember you past the next stage dive or studio session.

What you didn't know is that when he turned the corner in that alley, Damiano David wasn’t thinking about his next stage.

He was thinking about the waitress who corrected his English without laughing.

The girl who didn’t care who he was.

The one who smiled, even when she didn’t have to.

And maybe, just maybe…

Damiano was falling in love with that fresh air in a city made of smoke.
