The Kang family had always been at the center of their nationâs identity, revered for their grace, strength, and modern leadership. Crown Prince Kang Yeosang, the epitome of royal perfection, was frequently seen fulfilling his duties with calm authority. The press adored him, and the people admired his unwavering commitment to the country.
But then, there was herâthe mysterious younger sibling, the princess. Her name was only whispered in the media, her face hidden behind the shroud of privacy. She was unlike any princess depicted in the movies or books. She spent her days like an ordinary teenager, far removed from the royal spotlight, in oversized hoodies and sneakers. To her, the palace gates were more like walls keeping her in than protecting her from the outside world.
The princess rarely appeared at public events, and even when she did, the cameras were only granted fleeting glimpses of her, often from the side or with her head bowed. While the media speculated about her personality, the truth was far simplerâshe just wanted a normal life.
To the world, she was Princess YN of the Kang familyâa figure shrouded in mystery. But to the people who mattered, she was just YN. She attended a regular high school, sat in the same classrooms as everyone else, and blended into the crowd so seamlessly that most of her classmates often forgot about her royal title. She was the girl who shared notes, cracked jokes, and groaned about exams like everyone else.
Her friends treated her like one of their own, never bowing or tiptoeing around her. They teased her when she tripped in gym class and cheered her on during group projects. They knew who she was but never made it a big deal. She loved that.
What wasnât so normal, however, was the tall figure who accompanied her everywhereâMingi, her bodyguard. Dressed in unassuming clothes and rarely speaking unless needed, Mingi was her silent protector, always lingering at the edges of her life. Whether she was walking to school, grabbing ice cream after class, or spending hours at the library, Mingi was there.
He wasnât just a bodyguard, though. To YN, he was more like a guardian, someone who quietly guided and watched over her. While her friends sometimes teased her about having her âpersonal watchdog,â she never minded. Mingi had been a part of her life for so long that she couldnât imagine going anywhere without him.
During lunch breaks, while her friends chatted and laughed, Mingi often sat a few tables away, scrolling through his phone but always aware of her. When they walked home from school, sheâd casually chatter about her day, and though Mingiâs replies were short, his presence was steady and comforting.
âI bet you think my math teacher hates me,â she said one day, munching on a bag of chips as they walked to her favorite bookstore.
âI donât think he hates you,â Mingi replied, glancing at her. âBut maybe stop arguing about every grade?â
She grinned. âNever. Someone has to keep him on his toes.â
âYouâre going to give me gray hair before Iâm 30,â he muttered, shaking his head.
âYouâd look good with gray hair,â she teased, nudging him.
Moments like these made YN feel like the luckiest girl in the world. She might have been born into royalty, but with Mingi by her side, she got to live a life that felt wonderfully, perfectly normal.
How did they meet? Well the meeting was a bit chaotic.
It had been a quiet spring afternoon when ten-year-old YN first met Mingi. The palace halls were dappled with sunlight, and the faint hum of gardeners at work outside filled the air. YN, dressed in her favorite pale blue dress, sat in the corner of the grand library, building a lopsided tower of books. She was humming to herself when a knock interrupted her focus.
âYN,â the Kingâs voice came from the doorway, deep and steady as always, âI want you to meet someone.â
She turned, pushing her hair out of her face, and blinked at the tall figure standing beside her father. He was lanky but strong, with wide shoulders and a quiet confidence that seemed far too mature for someone who looked only a decade older than her. His black hair was neatly combed, and he looked stiff in his uniformânervous, even.
âThis is Song Mingi,â the King continued, his tone softer now. âHeâs going to be your bodyguard from today onward.â
âBodyguard?â YN tilted her head, confusion written all over her face. âWhy do I need a bodyguard?â
The King smiled. âBecause youâre very special, YN. And special people need someone to look after them.â
Mingi bowed deeply, his voice low but clear as he spoke for the first time. âItâs an honor to serve you, Your Highness.â
YN frowned, her gaze darting between her father and the stranger. âSo⊠what does he do? Stand around and look boring?â
Her father chuckled, patting her head gently. âHeâll be here to keep you safe and help you with anything you need.â With that, the King left, leaving YN alone with the unfamiliar young man.
For the first few days, YN wasnât quite sure what to make of Mingi. He followed her everywhere, always a step behind, silent and watchful. Whether she was in her room playing with her dolls, exploring the gardens, or eating her meals, he was there.
âDo you ever talk?â she asked him one day, spinning around to face him as he stood by the door to her room.
âIf you want me to,â he replied simply, his voice calm.
âWhatâs the point of you being here if youâre just going to be boring?â she huffed, crossing her arms.
But things began to change after a few days. It started with little thingsâhow Mingi always made sure her favorite snacks were on hand during study time, how he carried her books without being asked, or how he gently guided her away from muddy puddles in the garden without a word. When she tripped during a game of tag with her friends, Mingi was the first to rush to her side, kneeling to check her scraped knee.
âYouâre not hurt badly,â he said, his voice soft but steady. âBut letâs get this cleaned up.â
From that moment, something shifted. YN began to trust him. Soon, she found herself clinging to him more and more. Sheâd tug at his sleeve whenever she wanted something, ask him endless questions about his life, and insist he sit with her during meals, even if he tried to politely decline.
âMingi, do you like chocolate or vanilla?â sheâd ask, holding up two bowls of ice cream.
âVanilla, I guess,â heâd reply, only for her to shove the bowl of chocolate into his hands with a grin. âWell, I like chocolate, so youâre eating this one.â
It wasnât long before Mingi became the center of her little world. To her, he wasnât just a bodyguardâhe was a constant, someone who made her feel safe in a way she didnât even realize she needed. She didnât care about the circumstances that brought him to the palace, or that he was the son of a noble family that had fallen from grace. To her, he was simply Mingi, her guardian, her protector, and the one person she trusted with everything.
By the end of the first month, she was practically glued to his side. Wherever YN went, Mingi wasnât far behindâand she made sure of it.
The palace soon became accustomed to the sight of YN clinging to Mingi like he was a second skin. Wherever she went, her tiny hands were either clutching his sleeve, gripping his uniform jacket, or reaching up to be carried. And Mingi, with his endless patience, always obliged her, no matter how exhausting her energy seemed to be.
One day, while attending a charity event with her parents, YN grew bored of the endless formalities. The long speeches and handshakes werenât exactly ten-year-old-friendly. Spotting Mingi standing a short distance away, she made her way over to him, ignoring her motherâs disapproving glance.
âMingi,â she whined softly, tugging at his sleeve. âIâm tired.â
He crouched down, his expression softening. âWant me to take you somewhere quieter?â
âCarry me,â she demanded, lifting her arms up dramatically.
Without hesitation, he scooped her up, balancing her effortlessly on his hip. She snuggled into his chest, resting her head on his shoulder. The cameras caught the moment almost instantly, flashes illuminating the hall as reporters whispered to each other. The next day, headlines were plastered across every paper: âPrincess YN Finds Her Comfort in Her Shadow, Bodyguard Mingi!â
It didnât stop there. The media couldnât get enough of their dynamic. During a public library visit, YN decided to curl up in Mingiâs lap while reading one of her favorite picture books. It was an innocent gestureâshe had always leaned on him as a source of comfortâbut the sight of the princess slouched against the stoic bodyguard with her book upside down made the perfect photograph.
âDo you think you could sit any straighter?â Mingi teased in a low whisper, glancing down at her as she adjusted herself against him.
âNope. Iâm comfy,â she mumbled without looking up.
The royal PR team later joked that the image single-handedly made the entire nation collectively âawww.â
Another instance came during a school event. YN, participating in a relay race, tripped over her shoelaces midway. She wasnât hurt, but her face scrunched up in frustration as the other kids raced ahead of her. Before anyone could step in, Mingi walked straight onto the track, kneeling beside her.
âYou okay, Princess?â he asked gently.
âNo!â she pouted. âI was winning!â
âWant me to carry you to the finish line?â he joked.
Her eyes lit up instantly. âYes!â
Despite the protests of her teacher, Mingi picked her up, her arms looping tightly around his neck, and jogged to the finish line. The other kids laughed and cheered, and YN wore a smug grin for the rest of the day. The moment was, of course, caught on video and quickly went viral.
In quieter moments, their bond shone just as brightly. During long car rides to royal functions, YN would inevitably fall asleep against Mingiâs shoulder, her little body slouching into his side. No matter how cramped or awkward the position, Mingi never moved until she woke up, even if his arm went numb.
âDoesnât she get heavy?â one of the royal aides once asked him, watching as Mingi carried a dozing YN into the palace after a long day.
âNot at all,â he replied simply, adjusting her slightly so sheâd be more comfortable.
Mingi didnât care about the headlines or the public perception. To him, YN wasnât just his responsibilityâshe was his charge, his little princess. And to YN, Mingi wasnât just her bodyguard. He was her rock, her protector, and the one person who never let go.
As YN grew older, her dynamic with Mingi evolved, but in many ways, it stayed the same. He was no longer the one carrying her around or fetching things for herâshe had plenty of palace staff to do thatâbut Mingi remained her constant, her anchor, and most importantly, her best friend.
âHey, Mingi,â she said one day, sprawled across the palace couch, flipping through her phone. âCan you believe someone asked me to bring them a cup of water today? Me. A princess. I mean, can you imagine?â
Mingi, who was sitting nearby with a book in hand, glanced at her, unimpressed. âYou couldâve just gotten it for them.â
âI donât think so.â She raised an eyebrow, smirking. âThatâs what staff is for.â
He shook his head, hiding a small smile. âYouâre impossible.â
âBut you like me this way,â she quipped, tossing a cushion at him.
Mingi might have been her bodyguard, but to her, he was the one person in the palace who never treated her like royalty. He didnât bow, didnât rush to fulfill her every whim. And she liked that. She didnât need to ask him for anythingâhe already gave her his loyalty, his protection, and his steady presence.
She didnât hesitate to make the distinction clear to others, though. If anyone dared to suggest Mingi do something outside of his role, she was quick to shut it down.
âMingi isnât staff,â sheâd say firmly. âHeâs my friend. Get someone else to do it.â
Her other staff quickly learned that Mingi held a special place in her life, and they respected it. Meanwhile, YN never held back from treating him like a confidant. Sheâd drag him to her favorite places, tell him all her secrets, and share everything from her late-night worries to her wildest dreams.
âYou know, sometimes I think youâre the only person who actually knows me,â she told him one evening as they sat in the palace garden.
âThatâs because you talk my ear off,â Mingi teased, though his voice was warm.
âWell, someone has to listen,â she shot back with a grin, leaning her head against his shoulder.
And though Mingi never said it, he valued their friendship just as much. To him, she wasnât just a princessâshe was YN, his closest friend, the one person who treated him like family in a world that often felt far too formal.
It was a crisp winter evening, the kind where the cold seemed to seep into your bones despite the layers of warm clothing. The royal family stood on the grand balcony of the palace, gazing down at the crowd gathered for the annual winter gala. A sea of people, elegantly dressed in thick coats and scarves, murmured excitedly below, admiring the lights twinkling across the square.
YN stood near the railing, her eyes wandering over the scene, but she wasnât paying much attention to the event itself. Instead, she was focused on the warm presence beside her. Mingi stood just behind her, always watchful, his dark coat blending with the night as he ensured she remained comfortable despite the chill in the air.
Every few moments, Mingi would glance down at YN, noting how her scarf had slipped a little, exposing her neck to the cold. Without a word, he gently adjusted it, making sure it was wrapped securely around her. YN barely noticedâshe was used to it by now. Mingiâs careful attention to her every need had become second nature.
âYN,â Mingiâs voice cut through the soft hum of the crowd, âyour scarf came loose again.â
YN sighed, her breath visible in the cold air, and shifted closer to him, her cheek grazing his coat as she stood slightly slouched against his side. She had grown used to his hovering, his need to ensure she was always warm and taken care of. It wasnât annoying to herâit felt like normal.
âIâm fine,â she mumbled, her voice muffled by the cold air, but she made no move to pull away from him. She liked the way Mingi was always there, always making sure she was safe and comfortable.
Mingi didnât argue. He simply adjusted the scarf one more time, then slipped a small heat pack into her hands, holding one against her ear, knowing how much she hated the cold seeping into her sensitive skin. He didnât even ask if she was okay. He just knew.
YN clutched the heat pack with both hands, pressing it against her ear, and looked up at him, offering a small, thankful smile. There was no need for wordsâMingi's actions spoke for him. She wasnât bothered by the constant attention, the way he fussed over her in the cold. To YN, it was just how things had always been, and she couldnât imagine a winter night without Mingi there, making sure she was taken care of.
She let out a soft breath and leaned against his side, her body instinctively seeking the warmth he always provided. Mingi didnât pull away. In fact, he wrapped his arm around her, pulling her a little closer to shield her from the wind.
To the royal family, the people on the balcony, and the watching crowd, this was simply the expected sightâthe princess, calm and composed, standing with her ever-vigilant bodyguard. But to YN, this was the norm. It wasnât a chore or anything unusual. It was Mingi. Her best friend. Her protector. And for the first time, with the wind biting at her skin, she leaned into him even more, grateful for the comfort that only he could give.
The next morning, as YN sat in the grand dining room with her family, sipping on her warm tea, the morning papers were spread across the table. She glanced lazily at the headlines, her fingers tracing the rim of her cup absentmindedly. As usual, there was a flurry of royal gossip, but one headline caught her eye.
"Princess YN and Bodyguard Mingi: A Winter Night of Comfort and Protection"
She frowned, her brow furrowing as she skimmed through the article. Pictures of her and Mingi on the balcony the night before had been plastered all over the pageâimages of her clinging to his side, the heat packs in her hands, and Mingi adjusting her scarf. It was clear the media had turned their attention to their every move, almost as if they were trying to capture some deeper meaning behind their closeness.
âWhy are they so obsessed with me?â YN asked, looking up at Mingi, who was quietly standing beside her, ever-watchful.
Mingi glanced at the newspaper but said nothing, instead focusing on adjusting the setting of her teacup. He knew what was coming.
âWell?â she pressed, looking up at him with wide, curious eyes. "I mean, itâs not like I did anything special. Itâs just cold, and you were just⊠looking out for me.â
Mingi smiled softly, his expression gentle as he gave her a small nod. âYouâre not just anyone, YN.â
She blinked, still not fully understanding. âBut why? Iâm just me.â
âThatâs just it,â he said, kneeling beside her so they were eye-level. âYou are a princess. People look up to you. They admire you for who you are, for everything you represent.â
YNâs brows furrowed even deeper, and she leaned back in her chair, trying to wrap her head around his words. She was so used to the quiet normalcy of her life that she had never truly realized how the world saw her.
She mumbled softly, tracing a line in the condensation on her teacup. âI donât want all this attention. It feels so⊠weird.â
Mingi chuckled softly, his tone warm but reassuring. âIt can be a lot, yes. But thatâs just the way it is when youâre born into the royal family. Youâre not just living for yourself. Your actions, your presence, it matters to people. They care about you because they see you as someone who represents the country, its hopes, its dreams.â
YN blinked, trying to absorb his explanation. âSo itâs not because Iâm cute or something?â she asked, her lips curling into a small, playful smile.
Mingi chuckled, shaking his head. âOf course, youâre cute. But itâs more than that. Youâre the princess. The future of this kingdom.â
YN paused, staring down at her tea. She didnât fully understand all of it, but there was something about the way Mingi explained it that made her feel both strange and important.
âYou always say things that sound so serious,â she muttered, not quite grasping the weight of what he meant.
Mingi smiled at her, knowing how young and innocent her thoughts still were despite her royal title. âYou donât have to understand everything now. Just know that youâre more than you think you are. And thatâs why people are watching.â
YN let out a sigh, her head drooping as she thought about it. âI guess Iâll have to get used to it, huh?â
Mingi nodded, giving her a light pat on the back. âYouâll get the hang of it.â
And even though she didnât fully grasp the complexities of her status, YN knew that one thing would never change: Mingi would always be there by her side, keeping things normal, keeping things groundedâjust like a friend.
A few days after the whole winter gala incident, YN and Mingi found themselves attending a royal charity dinner, an event full of formalities and stiff faces. YN, however, wasnât one to enjoy the seriousness of these events. Her mind often wandered, especially when the speeches began. That evening, as she sat next to Mingi, her attention started to drift.
At first, she tried to occupy herself with her phone under the table, but her restless fingers quickly grew bored. She glanced over at Mingi, who was dutifully standing beside her, observing the guests with his usual focused expression.
âHey, Mingi,â she whispered, poking him lightly in the ribs. âDo you think the soup is too hot? Or do you think they put something weird in it?â
Mingi glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. âWhat do you mean by âweirdâ?â
âLike⊠I donât know,â she said, wrinkling her nose. âWhat if they secretly put... chocolate in it?â
Mingi chuckled, clearly amused by the absurdity of her thoughts. âYN, donât be silly. Chocolate in soup isââ
But before he could finish, YN's mischievous grin appeared. She leaned over toward him and whispered in a stage whisper, âWhat if we just sneak a taste? You know, just to see if itâs chocolate or not.â
Mingi looked at her in disbelief. âYNâno, weâre not sneaking food under the table.â
But that was exactly what she was about to do. Without further hesitation, YN grabbed her spoon from the table and casually dipped it into the bowl of soup, all while trying to act as if she were merely adjusting it. The only problem was, she hadnât quite thought it through. As she tried to raise the spoon to her lips, she accidentally splashed some of the soup onto her dress.
âOops,â she muttered, trying to cover the small spill by quickly wiping it with her napkin.
Mingi, ever the protector, quickly leaned in to help, but the moment he did, he accidentally knocked his own drinkâan expensive glass of red wineâright onto YNâs lap.
âAh! Mingi!â she yelped, wide-eyed. The wine spread across her dress in an instant.
The room went silent for a moment, and YN couldnât help but burst out laughing. âOh my god, what did you do? You just exploded my lap with wine!â
Mingi looked horrified, his face flushed. âIâm so sorry, Princess, I didnâtââ
âDonât worry,â she interrupted, still giggling. âAt least the wine looks kind of fancy, right?â
Mingi quickly grabbed some napkins and tried to dab away the mess, but YN was now laughing so hard that she could hardly keep her composure.
âWhatâs going on over there?â someone whispered nearby.
âOh, nothing,â YN said between fits of laughter. âJust Mingi trying to drown me in wine and soup.â
Mingi shot her an exasperated look, but even he couldnât hold back a smile. âYouâre impossible.â
The rest of the evening went on with everyone around them trying hard not to giggle at the mess they had unintentionally made. And though YNâs dress was ruined, it was just another one of those funny moments that felt normal between the two of themâa princess and her overprotective bodyguard, who never seemed to do anything quite by the book.
One afternoon, as YN lounged lazily in the palace, scrolling through her phone, she noticed Mingi, who had just returned from his usual workout. The sight of him, all flushed from his session and wiping sweat from his forehead, made her pause mid-scroll.
Her mind, never short of strange ideas, suddenly lit up with a random, ridiculous thought.
What if... she mused, a mischievous glint appearing in her eyes. What if I swing from his biceps?
Without a second thought, she stood up and walked casually toward the workout area where Mingi was cooling down with some stretches. His attention was focused entirely on his breathing, unaware that YN was about to disrupt his hard-earned relaxation.
âMingi,â she said in the sweetest tone she could muster, stepping into his personal space, âIâve been thinking.â
Mingi, still slightly out of breath, raised an eyebrow, giving her a suspicious look. âUh-oh. Thatâs never good.â
âNo, no,â she said, holding up her hands in mock innocence. âItâs a good thought. A very good one.â
He groaned. âWhat are you plotting now, YN?â
She grinned widely, moving closer and without warning, gently tugging on his arm. âI want to swing from your biceps.â
There was a long pause, and Mingi blinked in disbelief. âWhat?â
âYou heard me,â YN said with a shrug, grinning even more mischievously.
âDo you want me to install a swing in the garden for you?â Mingi asked hesitantly.
âNo! Iâve seen you working out so hard, and Iâm curious. You look strong enough. Come on, just once. Let me swing from your biceps.â
Mingi, still processing what she said, stared at her for a moment. Then, without much else to do, he rolled his eyes and sighed, but there was a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. âYou know, this is the weirdest request youâve ever made.â
âI know, right?â YN said, bouncing on her feet in excitement. âBut come on, you owe me for making me stay in all these boring royal events.â
Mingi could only shake his head in disbelief, giving in because he knew YN was never going to let it go. âFine, fine. But if you hurt yourself, Iâm not responsible.â
âDeal!â she said, her voice full of joy.
With one smooth motion, she jumped toward him, wrapping her arms around his thick bicep. He flexed slightly, just enough to lift her off the ground, and YN squealed in delight as she swung from his arm like a monkey.
âSee? This is fun!â she exclaimed, giggling wildly.
Mingi stood there, still holding her with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. âYou are ridiculous.â
âI know,â YN grinned, her legs swinging back and forth. âBut itâs a good kind of ridiculous, donât you think?â
âYouâre lucky I work out so much,â Mingi muttered, though there was affection in his voice.
âThank you!â she laughed, then swung once more before jumping down. âThis was exactly what I needed.â
He chuckled, shaking his head. âYouâre impossible.â
But YN didnât mind. She was already back to lounging, her weird request fulfilled. Mingi might have had his personal workout time invaded, but in that moment, he couldnât help but smile at how his friendship with YN always kept things unpredictableâand oddly fun.
It was a sunny afternoon, and YN was feeling particularly adventurousâor rather, particularly bored. Mingi had been called to attend a brief meeting with the palace security staff, leaving her to her own devices. Normally, this wouldnât be an issue, but YN being YN, boredom wasnât something she handled gracefully.
She decided to take matters into her own hands.
âI donât need Mingi for everything,â she muttered under her breath, determined to prove that she could function just fine on her own. âHow hard can it be to make a cup of tea or something?â
She strolled into the palace kitchen, glancing around at the unfamiliar appliances and shiny surfaces. She had seen Mingi brew tea for her countless times beforeâit looked easy enough. She grabbed a kettle, filled it with water, and placed it on the stove. With a smug grin, she flicked the stove on and waited.
Moments later, the kettle started whistling, and YN panicked. âOh no, itâs screaming at me!â she yelled, fumbling with the knobs. Instead of turning the stove off, she accidentally turned it higher. The whistle got louder, and in her panic, she grabbed the kettle with her bare hands.
âHOT! HOT! HOT!â she shrieked, flailing her hands and dropping the kettle back onto the stove with a loud clang.
Hearing the commotion, several staff members rushed into the kitchen, only to find the princess standing there, her cheeks flushed, holding her now slightly red hands.
âYour Highness, are you alright?â one of them asked, clearly concerned.
âIâm fine,â YN grumbled, glaring at the offending kettle. âThis thing just hates me.â
Before the staff could offer assistance, the door to the kitchen burst open, and in strode Mingi, looking mildly out of breath and thoroughly unimpressed.
âWhat is going on here?â he asked, his voice low and calm, but his eyes scanning her for injuries.
YN froze, caught red-handedâliterally. âNothing,â she said quickly, hiding her hands behind her back.
Mingi crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow. âNothing? Because it doesnât sound like nothing. It sounds like someone decided to play chef without supervision.â
âI was just trying to make tea,â she muttered, pouting. âHow hard can it be? You do it all the time.â
Mingi sighed, stepping closer and gently pulling her hands into view. He inspected her reddened palms, his frown deepening. âYou burned yourself.â
âItâs just a tiny burn,â she protested.
Without a word, Mingi grabbed a small first-aid kit from the counter, pulled her to a nearby chair, and sat her down. As he carefully applied some ointment to her hands, YN watched him silently, feeling both guilty and oddly comforted.
âYouâre not allowed in the kitchen alone anymore,â Mingi said firmly, wrapping a bandage around her hand.
âBut I was just trying toââ
âYN,â he interrupted, looking her straight in the eye. âYou are truly hopeless without me.â
She opened her mouth to argue but then closed it again, realizing he wasnât wrong. âFine,â she muttered, leaning her head on his shoulder dramatically. âI guess I do need you for everything.â
Mingi chuckled softly, his expression softening. âThatâs what Iâm here for.â
From then on, YN stayed far away from the kitchenâunless Mingi was there to supervise. And though she occasionally teased him for being overprotective, deep down, she knew she wouldnât have it any other way.
It was a chilly, overcast morning, the kind where the sky hung low and gray, promising rain at any moment. YN sat with her group of friends in the school common area, bundled up in her scarf and coat. The conversation drifted from homework to weekend plans, and finally, as it often did, to crushes and dream weddings.
âI think Iâd want someone whoâs athletic,â one friend said, her cheeks pink as she laughed.
âYeah, but he also has to be super smart,â another added.
âWhat about you, YN?â one of them asked, leaning in with a teasing grin. âYou never talk about this stuff. Whoâs your dream guy?â
YN blinked, caught off guard by the question. Normally, sheâd deflect with a joke or tease them back, but today, she hesitated.
Her friends stared at her expectantly, but instead of conjuring up a romantic fantasy, her mind went somewhere else entirelyâto Mingi.
She thought of how he always stood by her, carrying her heavy school bags without complaint. How he remembered to pack her favorite snacks on long days and made sure she had an umbrella when the sky threatened rain, just like today. How his steady, quiet presence had been the one constant in her life for as long as she could remember.
But then, like a sudden gust of wind cutting through the chill, another thought hit her: One day, Iâll have to leave him behind.
Her stomach twisted. She wasnât like her friends, free to imagine marrying their crushes or choosing their own futures. She was a princess, bound by duty. One day, sheâd be expected to marry someone suitableâa prince or nobleman chosen by her family, someone who fit the royal image. And Mingi⊠Mingi would remain as he was, her protector, her shadow. But never more.
The thought felt like a weight pressing down on her chest, and she didnât know why it hurt so much.
âYN? Hellooo?â her friend waved a hand in front of her face, snapping her out of her daze.
âHuh? Oh, sorry,â YN mumbled, forcing a small smile. âI was just⊠thinking.â
Her friends exchanged amused looks, laughing lightly. âThinking about your crush, huh?â one teased.
âSomething like that,â YN muttered, though her heart wasnât in it. She laughed along with them, but the unease in her chest lingered for the rest of the day.
The school bell rang, signaling the end of the day, and YN packed her things slowly, her thoughts still clouded from the earlier conversation with her friends. The idea of leaving Mingi someday had weighed heavily on her throughout the day, and she couldnât shake it.
As she exited the school building, there he was, as alwaysâMingi. He leaned casually against the sleek black car, dressed in his usual suit, an umbrella in hand just in case it rained again. His watchful eyes immediately softened when they met hers, and he straightened up, opening the car door for her.
âRough day?â he asked, noticing the faint frown on her face as she approached.
YN didnât respond immediately. Instead, she stood there for a moment, looking at him, her thoughts racing. She thought about how he was always there, waiting for her, protecting her, ensuring she never had to worry about anything. And the idea of losing thatâof losing himâwas unbearable.
âMingi,â she said suddenly, her voice firm but her eyes filled with emotion.
He blinked, surprised by her tone. âYes?â
âIâve decided,â she said, stepping closer to him, her hands clutching the straps of her backpack. âIâm not leaving you. Ever.â
Mingi tilted his head, confused by her sudden declaration. âWhat are you talking about?â
âI mean it,â she continued, her words tumbling out impulsively. âIf I have to marry someone, itâll be you.â
There was a brief, stunned silence as Mingi processed her words. His eyes widened slightly, and for the first time in a long while, he looked genuinely flustered.
âYN,â he started, his voice gentle but firm, âyou canât justââ
âIâm serious!â she interrupted, her cheeks flushing but her gaze unwavering. âWhy should I marry some random prince or noble when youâre the one whoâs always been there for me? Youâre the one who takes care of me, who knows me better than anyone else. Who else would I want by my side?â
Mingi exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck as he tried to find the right words. He crouched slightly so they were at eye level, his expression softening.
âYN,â he said carefully, âIâve been by your side since you were a kid. My job is to protect you and make sure youâre safe. Thatâs what Iâm here for. But marrying me?â He shook his head lightly, a small smile tugging at his lips. âThatâs not how it works.â
âBut why not?â she pressed, her voice quieter now but still determined. âI donât care about whatâs âsupposedâ to happen. I just⊠I donât want to lose you, Mingi.â
His expression softened even more, and he placed a hand gently on her shoulder. âYouâre not going to lose me,â he said firmly. âNo matter what happens, Iâll always be here. Thatâs a promise, remember?â
YN bit her lip, her shoulders relaxing slightly at his reassurance. âYou better mean it,â she muttered, her cheeks still pink.
âI do,â he said with a quiet chuckle, straightening up and opening the car door again. âNow, come on. Letâs get you home before you decide to propose to me in front of the whole school.â
She let out a small laugh, climbing into the car, her heart feeling a little lighter. As they drove away, YN glanced at Mingi through the rearview mirror, her mind still replaying their conversation.
That evening, after they arrived back at the palace, YN couldnât keep the thoughts swirling in her head any longer. As soon as dinner was over, she excused herself and marched straight to her fatherâs study.
The king was sitting at his large oak desk, reading through a stack of documents when she entered without knockingâa habit he often teased her about but secretly adored. Her mother, the queen, was seated on the nearby couch, sipping tea as she reviewed her own set of papers. Both of them looked up in surprise when YN stood before them, her face set with determination.
âFather, Mother,â she started, her voice steady despite the nerves fluttering in her chest, âI need to talk to you about something important.â
The king raised an eyebrow, setting down his pen. âWhat is it, my dear? You look serious.â
âIâve been thinking about the future,â she said, clasping her hands together. âAbout how one day, Iâll have to marry someone. But I donât want to marry some stranger or someone chosen just because of their title. I want⊠I want Mingi.â
The room went silent, the words hanging heavy in the air.
The queen blinked, clearly taken aback. âMingi? As in your bodyguard?â
YN nodded firmly. âYes. Heâs been there for me my whole life. Heâs the one who truly knows me, who understands me. I donât see why I have to marry someone else just because itâs tradition. Itâs not fair.â
The king leaned back in his chair, his expression thoughtful but hesitant. âYN, you know weâve always respected your opinions and wishes. But this⊠This isnât something we can decide so easily. Mingi isââ
âânot a royal,â the queen finished gently, though her tone carried a note of concern.
âI donât care about that!â YN interrupted, her voice rising slightly. âWhy does it matter? Times have changed, havenât they? People donât care about traditions as much as they used to. They care about love and happiness. And I know what I want.â
The king exchanged a glance with the queen, both of them clearly unsure how to respond.
It was then that the door opened, and Yeosang stepped in, his brows furrowed as he looked between his parents and YN. âWhatâs going on?â he asked, sensing the tension in the room.
âShe wants to marry Mingi,â the queen explained, her voice laced with a mix of disbelief and worry.
Yeosangâs eyebrows shot up, and then, much to everyoneâs surprise, he smiled slightly. âWell, why not?â
âYeosang!â the queen said, shocked by his response.
âMother, Father,â Yeosang said calmly, stepping closer, âitâs not the old days anymore. Things are different now. People wonât revolt just because the princess marries someone who isnât royal. In fact, theyâll probably love it. Youâve seen how the media adores her bond with Mingi. Theyâd see it as proof that sheâs grounded, that she cares about real connections instead of outdated customs.â
The king frowned, clearly conflicted. âItâs not just about the public, Yeosang. Itâs about the responsibility, the image, theââ
âThe happiness of your daughter,â Yeosang interrupted gently but firmly. âShouldnât that come first?â
YN looked at her brother, her eyes wide with gratitude. She hadnât expected him to stand up for her so strongly, and it gave her a surge of hope.
The queen sighed, looking at her husband. âHeâs not wrong, you know. But⊠itâs still hard to let go of traditions weâve followed for so long.â
The king rubbed his temples, clearly torn. After a long pause, he looked at YN. âThis isnât a decision we can make overnight. But⊠if this is truly what you want, weâll consider it. Just give us some time.â
It wasnât a definitive yes, but it wasnât a no either. YNâs heart swelled with a mix of relief and hope.
âThank you,â she said softly, bowing slightly before leaving the room.
As YN left the study, her thoughts still buzzing with hope and relief, she heard familiar footsteps behind her. She turned to see Yeosang following her down the grand hallway, his hands casually tucked into his pockets.
âWhat?â she asked, stopping in her tracks and raising an eyebrow at him.
Yeosang sighed, motioning for her to keep walking as he fell into step beside her. âI need to talk to you,â he said, his tone calm but firm.
She rolled her eyes. âIf youâre going to tell me Iâm being ridiculous, donât bother. You already supported me in front of Mother and Father.â
âI did,â Yeosang agreed, glancing at her. âBut only because Iâm tired of those outdated customs, too. And because, if anyone deserves you, itâs Mingi. Heâs practically perfect for you.â
YN blinked in surprise at his honesty, a small smile tugging at her lips. âReally? You think so?â
âYes, I do,â he admitted with a shrug. âHeâs loyal, reliable, and has been by your side for years. I know heâd do anything to keep you safe and happy. Thatâs the kind of person you need in your life.â
Her smile grew, but before she could thank him, he stopped walking and turned to face her, his expression more serious now.
âBut, YN,â he said firmly, âyouâre still too young to make decisions like this.â
Her smile faltered. âWhat do you mean? I know what I want.â
âYou think you do,â he replied, his tone gentle but unyielding. âBut youâre only a teenager. Marriage isnât just about liking someone or thinking theyâre a good person. Itâs a huge commitment, and it comes with responsibilities you canât even imagine right now.â
âIâm not saying I want to marry him tomorrow,â she argued, crossing her arms. âIâm just saying that when the time comes, it should be my choice. And I chose Mingi.â
Yeosang sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. âLook, I get it. Youâve grown up with him. Heâs been like your rock, your anchor. It makes sense that youâd feel this way. But you need to take a step back and really think about what you want in lifeânot just right now, but years from now.â
YN frowned, her arms dropping to her sides. âYou donât think Iâm serious?â
âI think youâre serious,â he said honestly. âAnd I think your feelings are valid. But feelings change, YN. And youâve got so much time ahead of you to figure out what you really want. All Iâm saying is, donât rush into something just because it feels right now.â
She looked down at the floor, his words sinking in. As much as she hated to admit it, Yeosang had a point. She was still young, and the future felt like a vast, uncharted sea.
âI just⊠I donât want to lose him,â she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
âYou wonât,â Yeosang reassured her, placing a hand on her shoulder. âMingiâs not going anywhere. Youâve got time, YN. Donât let fear make you rush into a decision. Trust that the right moment will come when itâs meant to.â
She nodded slowly, her gaze still fixed on the floor. âThanks, Yeosang. I⊠Iâll think about what you said.â
He smiled faintly, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze. âThatâs all I ask. Now, go get some rest. Youâve caused enough chaos for one day.â
She laughed lightly, the weight on her chest lifting just a little. As she walked away, she couldnât help but feel grateful for her brotherâs honesty and support. Even if she didnât have all the answers yet, she knew she had timeâand the people who cared about her to guide her along the way.
The sound of tennis balls being hit back and forth echoed through the royal court the next morning. Yeosang and Mingi were engaged in a competitive match, their banter as sharp as their serves. Despite the casual atmosphere, Mingi could sense there was something on Yeosangâs mind.
âNice shot,â Yeosang said as Mingi delivered a powerful forehand that he barely managed to return.
âYouâre getting slow, Yeosang,â Mingi teased, smirking as he prepared for the next serve.
âNot slow,â Yeosang retorted, adjusting his stance. âJust distracted.â
Mingi raised an eyebrow but said nothing, focusing on his serve. He sent the ball flying across the court, and Yeosang returned it with surprising force. The rally continued for a while before Yeosang finally missed, and Mingi stepped forward, spinning his racket casually.
âAll right,â Mingi said, tilting his head. âWhatâs on your mind?â
Yeosang sighed, walking to the side to grab his water bottle. âItâs YN,â he said simply.
Mingi tensed slightly but kept his expression neutral. âWhat about her?â
Yeosang took a sip of water, then leaned against the net, looking directly at his friend. âShe told me last night that she doesnât want to marry anyone but you.â
Mingi froze for a split second before letting out a quiet sigh. âI know,â he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. âShe told me the same thing yesterday.â
Yeosang raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. âAnd?â
âAnd⊠I told her thatâs not how it works,â Mingi said firmly, his voice calm but resolute. âSheâs still young. She doesnât fully understand what sheâs saying. Itâs just⊠attachment. Sheâs known me her whole life, so she thinks Iâm the answer to everything.â
Yeosang studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. âYouâre probably right,â he said eventually, setting his bottle down. âBut that doesnât change the fact that sheâs serious about how she feels.â
Mingi sighed again, sitting on the bench and resting his elbows on his knees. âI know. And thatâs what worries me. I donât want her to make decisions she might regret later. Sheâs a princess, Yeosang. Her life is already so complicated, and she deserves better thanââ
âDonât finish that sentence,â Yeosang interrupted, walking over to stand in front of him. âIf youâre about to say she deserves better than you, donât. Because itâs not true.â
Mingi blinked, clearly taken aback. âYeosang, Iâm just her bodyguard. You really thinkââ
âI think youâre one of the best people Iâve ever met,â Yeosang said firmly, crossing his arms. âAnd I think my sister deserves someone who will treat her with the care and respect youâve shown her every single day of her life. Do I think sheâs too young to be thinking about marriage? Yes. But do I think youâre a bad choice? Absolutely not.â
Mingi stared at him, stunned into silence.
Yeosang smirked, amused by his friendâs rare speechlessness. âHonestly, I expected you to freak out more when I brought this up. But it seems like youâve already thought this through.â
âI have,â Mingi admitted quietly. âIâve been thinking about it ever since she first mentioned it. I just⊠I donât want to cross any lines. My job is to protect her, notââ
âNot fall in love with her?â Yeosang finished, his tone teasing but not unkind.
Mingiâs eyes widened slightly, and he looked away, unsure how to respond.
Yeosang chuckled, clapping him on the shoulder. âRelax, Mingi. Iâm not here to tell you to stay away from her. If anything, Iâm telling you the opposite. Just⊠donât rush anything. Let her grow up, figure things out for herself. If this is meant to be, itâll happen in time.â
Mingi looked up at him, his expression softening. âYou really mean that?â
âI do,â Yeosang said with a small smile. âYouâre my friend, Mingi. And more importantly, youâre someone I trust. I know youâll do whatâs best for her.â
Mingi nodded, his chest feeling both lighter and heavier at the same time. âThanks, Yeosang.â
âDonât thank me yet,â Yeosang said with a smirk, grabbing his racket. âNow, letâs finish this game. Iâm not letting you win just because we had a heartfelt moment.â
Mingi laughed, standing up and grabbing his racket. âWeâll see about that.â
As they returned to the court, Mingi couldnât help but feel a renewed sense of responsibility. Whatever the future held, he would make sure YN was happyâwhether that meant staying by her side as her bodyguard or something more. For now, heâd take it one day at a time.
Months passed, and YNâs relentless determination, along with Yeosangâs support, slowly melted her parentsâ hesitation. It wasnât an easy road, but the Kang family eventually came to terms with the idea. The modern world was changing, and so were the rules of royalty. What mattered most was YNâs happiness, and it was clear that her bond with Mingi was unbreakable.
One crisp autumn morning, YN was called into the royal study. Her parents were there, seated at the same desk where she had once pleaded her case. Yeosang stood beside them, a small smile tugging at his lips.
âWeâve discussed it,â the king began, his tone gentle but formal. âAnd weâve decided that if this is truly what you want, YN, we will support your choice.â
For a moment, she just stared at them, her mind struggling to process the words. Then, as the realization hit her, her face lit up with pure, uncontainable joy. âReally?â she exclaimed, her voice trembling with excitement.
The queen smiled softly. âYes, really. We only want you to be happy.â
Before they could say anything else, YN bolted out of the room, her heart racing as she ran through the palace halls. She knew exactly where to find Mingiâin the training grounds, where he often started his mornings.
As she burst into the training yard, Mingi was mid-swing, sparring with another guard. He paused when he saw her, his brow furrowing in concern. âPrincess? Whatâs wrong?â
She didnât answer right away, instead running straight to him and grabbing his hands. Her grin was so wide it almost hurt, and her eyes sparkled with excitement. âThey said yes!â she blurted out.
Mingi blinked, caught off guard. âWhat?â
âMy parents! They said yes!â she repeated, practically bouncing on her feet. âTheyâre okay with itâwith us! You donât have to just be my bodyguard anymore. We can actuallyââ
Her words were cut off as Mingi let out a soft laugh, his shoulders relaxing as relief and happiness washed over him. âThey really said that?â
âYes!â she exclaimed, squeezing his hands tightly. âWe donât have to hide how we feel, or worry about traditions, or anything. Theyâre okay with it!â
Mingi smiled down at her, his heart swelling with emotions he could barely put into words. âIâm happy for you, YN. For us.â
She laughed, the sound bright and carefree. âYouâre happy? Mingi, Iâm the happiest person alive right now! I donât think Iâve ever been this happy!â
He chuckled, shaking his head. âYouâre something else, Princess.â
âOf course I am,â she said playfully, sticking her tongue out at him. âNow come on, we have to celebrate! Ice cream, movies, anything you wantâjust name it!â
Mingi laughed again, letting her excitement wash over him. âWhatever you want, YN. Todayâs your day.â
As they walked back toward the palace, YN chattering excitedly about all the plans she wanted to make, Mingi couldnât help but feel a deep sense of gratitude. Heâd always been content just being her protector, her shadow. But now, as he looked at her radiant smile and heard her joyful laughter, he realized that being by her side in this new way was more than heâd ever dreamed of.
For YN, the future felt brighter than ever. And for Mingi, there was no place heâd rather be than right there beside her, no matter what came next.

đWarnings: penetrative sex, sex at great heights

đSummary: As the human concubine to the King of the Harpies, there's some perks to when he visits your bed chambers
đdivider by @cafekitsune
đDay Version | Masterlist | Tongueday

Fucking Yeosang while your upper half was hanging off your balcony always added an extra zing to your sex. The king of the harpies enjoyed the way fear zested your sex, and so, this is how he took you majority of the time.
His moans echoed out to the rocky coast and contested the very waves crashing against the cliffs. Sometimes, if the waves were choppy enough, the salty spray would hit your face.
âEveryone warned me once I got a taste of the cunt of a human, that I'd never fuck one of my kind again,â Yeosang moans behind you again. âThey were right to warn me.â
The rough stone of the carven fort that was Yeosangâs Harpy Palace dug into your hips as Yeosangâs girthy cock stretches you out again and again with each thrust. Yeosang bid you to only wear the most diaphanous of clothing, that covered even your face, but did nothing to hide your body. It also did nothing to soften the push of the balcony's edge against your plush body.
âMy king,â You cry out, feeling your climax ascend with every rub of Yeosangâs cock against your g-spot.
âGo on,â Yeosang chuckles, âMake every harpy woman in this clutch want to be you, you wanton vixen.â
âIâm the only one that can satisfy your desires,â You moan loudly. âThis is the only pussy that you want.â
Yeosang back winged, waving his body behind you. âOnly you can satisfy me, concubine.â
The feeling of Yeosang filling you from behind and the roar of the sea below made you moan in fear and lust. It was not a moan of disappointment.

Part 5: The Goblin Merchant < | > Finale: The Devoted Lover
****
âWoah, woah, hey, hey! Come on, Kim. We can talk about this! We can talk about-AHHH!â
Yeosang flew across his living room like a rag doll. The small, spindly goblin scrambled from the marble floors quickly, running from the dark figure walking behind him. The warm temperature plummeted into a deep cold that turned hot breath into smoke. The crackling of ice could be heard in each footstep.Â
âI didnât know, I swear!â Yeosang cried, tripping on his own feet and shrieking when Hongjoong lifted him from the floor.Â
âYouâre telling me that at YOUR height, you didnât see the big hand brand on her back?â Hongjoong seethed, holding him by the throat. âYouâre telling me all the times you ripped off her clothes, saw her get a train run on her by your men, watched her hump anybody she could, you didnât see it? I find that hard to believe.â
Yeosang struggled in his hand, feet dangling several feet from the ground. Hongjoong could snap his neck with a single flick of his wrist. He could freeze his vocal chords. He could break him, and he wanted to. God, he wanted to. All the stress of his travels, and once again having you slip away was beginning to annoy him.Â
âI didnât!â he croaked, hitting Hongjoongâs arm. âIâŠI didnât.â
âBullshit, you little cretin,â he hissed, squeezing a bit more. âYou saw it, and thought itâd be good fun to play with whatâs mine. Youâre not a dumb man, Yeosang, even if you pretend differently. You donât become a Merchant Prince without having a brain.â
Hongjoong released his throat just enough to let him talk. âOkay, okay, so I knew-â
â-You little mother-â
â-But, but I didnât know you actually cared about her!â He winced, âI mean, she was brought in by these two-bit, no-name traffickers. I thought someone else branded her to get a bit more coin. I never thought you felt anything for her. You know me, Kim. You know I wouldâve-Gak!-I wouldâve given her the celebrity treatment while she was here! Nice room, slew of servants, top-notch food and drinks, heavy security and gave her a tour of the city! She wouldâve been royalty!â
âMy lord,â Sels spoke gently from behind him, âWe really had no idea she was your girl. Those guys found her wandering around in the woods near a lycan camp, so they thought sheâd gotten away. I told Yeo to keep her until you came, but you know him, heâs a knuckle-head.â
âAm not!â
Hongjoong then dropped him, letting Yeosang be a heap on the floor. He turned to Sels, âJongho was here. When did he leave?â
âThis morning, but you knew that, didnât ya?âÂ
Garnet would have gotten to Jongho by now. Hongjoong exhaled deeply, pushing hair from his face and walking away from the pair. Heâd missed you again, as he knew he would. It was why he used Byunghoâs cauldron to make the potion that would hold off the curse, and wrote the letter to Jongho personally. If anyone will respect you, itâll be Jongho. Alright, youâll likely screw him, but he wouldnât enslave or abuse you.Â
âIf you hurry, you can catch her,â she said. âThey took the spice road back to the mountain pass. Weâll loan you the Turbo. Itâs the fastest car on the market.âÂ
âNot my TurboâŠâ Yeosang whined roughly.Â
âShut it!â She hissed back at him.Â
âNo, thanks. I have a ride already.â
He left Yeosang and Sels in the mansion. There was no time to waste. He needed to see you before fate decided to intervene again. Walking through into the city, he pulled up his hood to hide his face. Visions of you on all fours, dazed and tongue sticking out as yet another goblin took you from behind swam to him. Youâll have no control over yourself in a few more days. You might be holding onto some shred of yourself still, but youâll lose that if he didnât find you soon. Garnet would find Jongho without a problem. His old friend had not let him down.Â
âHeya, pal,â an old goblin outside the auction house stopped his path, âLooking for goods at bargain prices? Stop on in-â
â-Cut the pitch, Rambo,â Hongjoong said coldly, âAnd tell me what the word on the street is.â
Rambo looked up into Hongjoongâs hood, then his eyes widened. He stiffened up slightly, stubbing out his cigar butt. âWord on the street is that Yeoâs wedding bash was a bust, and the guyâs popularity is plummeting as we speak. Nobody respects a man who canât keep his lady.â
âWhat about his factories?â
âHis gem mines are expanding, and his whiskey business is thriving.â
Hongjoong nodded. âWhere can a guy find a fast ride around here?â
âFor cheap? Go to Nero. For speed? Go to Pex.â
He fished out a gold coin to toss Ramboâs way, âThanks, Rambo. See you around.â
âMy lord,â he gave a sweeping bow, then began talking to another bypasser.Â
Yeosangâs secret crop was far outside of town. He walked down two more streets before finding Pexâs Hot Rod Car Dealership. Pex, a stout goblin, was more than happy to service Lord Kim. He offered Hongjoong a sleek black model that could go double the speed of the average ride. Hongjoong took it without another thought.Â
He couldnât let Yeosang get off so easily. Heâd known about you, and still decided to claim you. Hongjoong might not see you as a pet or a toy, but you were his girl. Driving down the crowded streets, he used backroads and side-streets to get out of the town and up into the hills. Yeosangâs crops were deep in them, nestled between the tallest ones where he sectioned it off with a fence and guards.Â
It didnât take much to get past the gate. The goblins posted in the watchtowers werenât prepared for the frost he shot their way, knocking them out one at a time. The iron bars were nothing to him. Cold hard ice froze them, and then his fist broke them apart. Since Yeosang likely deemed his wedding a national holiday, none of the usual workers were present. Passing offices and employee barracks and tents, Hongjoong blew past the second gate to the meadow.Â
Dark blue flowers stretched from the gate to another one several acres away. Hongjoong plucked one from the ground and examined it. Four large petals curving outwards with a bright yellow center, Royal Bloom was a very rare flower. It only grew in the hills near Tin City, which nobody knew until Yeosang discovered it. Naturally, he kept it to himself and bribed and intimidated people to secrecy. Hongjoong knew he grinded up the flower and used it to line his whiskey barrels. It was how the whiskey got its spiced, woodsy notes, which made it famous. He also knew this flower took several months to regrow and did not thrive in freezing climates. Putting the flower in his pocket-Royal Bloom was a handy potion ingredient-he bent down to the crop. Fingers sliding into the tilled soil, he closed his eyes and let the constant chill flow from his bones to the ground. Soon, he heard the crackling, breaking sounds of frost covering a surface. When he opened his eyes, the flourishing meadow had turned into fields of withered, frozen flowers. Useless. Any fragrance or use it might have to Yeosang was gone. He would have to scrap all of it and regrow the crop, if he could.Â
He drove back to the mountain peak where Aerion stayed nesting with her young.Â
âAerion,â he called to her, causing her to lift her head, âWeâre going to Blackstone.âÂ
You felt warm. Too warm. A layer of sweat stuck to your skin, only worsened by the animal skin blankets underneath you. Suddenly, the clothes on your body were too hot. The mesh top didnât absorb any of the sweat, and the tank top underneath felt tight and wet. Sweat dampened your thighs, and in the crevices of your body. You didnât remember the last place being this warm. Where was the last place? It had been an island. No, a town. No, a city. There had been water though, maybe. A small marina with ships coming in and out. Boats. No, ships, which are bigger than boats. Were they? Possibly. The confusion brought on a headache that pulsed in your temples. Reaching to your sides, you felt the veins there pumping from the frustration. You let out a low groan, rolling onto your side for some kind of relief.Â
âMorning,â a gruff maleâs voice said. The bed sunk heavily at the curve of your body. Strange hands roamed up the backs of your thighs, "Forgive me. You've been dripping in your sleep and you smell so sweet."
A very large finger traced up the middle of your thighs, pressing into the thin fabric of your shorts. With no underwear, the seam down the center was more apparent. The finger pushed it side to side and you let out a small moan. So good. So euphoric. You stayed in place as two big hands started groping your thighs. They spread them further, causing your thin shorts to sink between your ass cheeks slightly. The man gave a low groan and cupped the bottom curves.Â
âVery nice,â he huffed, âSo small and tight. Lord Kim is lucky to have such a beautiful wife.âÂ
You had no idea what he meant, and didnât care. Rolling back into the hand, you wondered if it was a hand. It was big enough to be separate digits, but didnât feel like it. The fingers-finger?-covered your entire sex as he felt back and forth. You whimpered when he pulled the shorts up to stick between your buttocks and pussy.Â
âThat goblin put you in such small, tight clothing,â he commented, âWith no undergarments. I suppose he wanted easier access to you. I don't blame him. I would want access to this body too if you were mine.â
You squirmed when the tip of the finger reached your clit through your thighs. The shorts tight against it, this new pressure added to the frustrating boiling. You no longer felt your mark burn. It became a part of you. You and the curse slowly melted together, the one thing you feared might happen. Like a fog, it gradually crept over you until it encompassed your entire body.Â
When a wide tongue licked between your cheeks, you gripped the blankets underneath you. Your intruder gave another low rumbling groan at your reaction, pulling them apart for better access to your hole. You could feel his warm, wet tongue grazing over your clenched ass hole, swirling in slow circles before flicking it. This position occasionally put his tongue over your cunt as well, which only made you moan more. When two hands tore the shorts apart, leaving a large hole in the middle, you ached for him to do more to you.
âHe said you would be easily aroused by now, but I didn't believe him,â he said, licking both holes. âHe gave me permission to pleasure you if you wished for it. I believe you do.â
âDonât stop,â you breathed, eyes still closed as you savored the tightness building. âPlease.â
âI have no intention of stopping,â he replied, âOnly if you asked me to.â
This honestly surprised you a moment. But then, you lifted one leg for him to slide his tongue over your soaked lips. Something hard grazed both sides as he repositioned himself to focus there. They were small, curved and added more teasing. Teeth? Tusks? Bones? The strange feeling made you moan. His hands kept kneading your ass, spreading and rubbing them while he sucked your wetness.Â
It was incredible. The bliss blossomed in your belly and grew through your veins. No goblin could match up to the massive hands and tongue working your lower half. Having something big enough was more than satisfying. You could stay like this all day, content to be his plaything forever. This was reinforced when he stuck his tongue inside you. It was like having a full dick. You started grinding against his face as he pushed a thumb into your ass, acting like one of Yeosangâs plugs rather than a finger. The tongue and finger worked together, and you started trembling in his firm grasp. His approving hums told you that you had permission to ride his tongue. He rolled onto his back so you straddled his head, and you didnât hesitate to start sliding up and down. This new position had him using one of his longer fingers in your ass, which caused a tense stretch that added to your pleasure. Soon enough, you were grabbing onto the large, muscled arms around your thighs and crying out into the air. He sensed your orgasm drawing near and urged you to bounce on his face, so you obeyed. Anything for him. Anything for the sweet release.
Your orgasm came when the tip of his tongue reached your g-spot, pounding it over and over. You swore it radiated from that very spot, causing you to stay still as his tongue worked you.
âSo tasty,â he growled, removing his tongue to lick your folds, âBetter than anything Iâve had before. Let me see these now. Theyâre nice in your clothes, butI bet they're better without them.â
Two green, four-fingered hands easily ripped the mesh top and shirt in two. He only tore it enough to expose your bare breasts, which he then grabbed. They appeared smaller in his hands, only just filling his palm. Rough fingers teased your nipples while he went back to your throbbing clit. You finally realized who you were in bed with: an Orc. A broad-shouldered, muscled orc with golden skin and dark brown eyes. They stared up at you, full of lust, as his mouth latched to your clit for a gentle suck. You jolted around at the tongue still licking you, feeling the sharpness of your stimulation, but still grinded into his mouth. .
The Orc had no problem maneuvering you on his own. Effortlessly, he grabbed your hips and settled you on the bulge growing in his leather shorts. You saw the rest of him then: black tattoos painted his muscles, depicting scenes of battle or encounters with wild animals; a thin animal bone pierced his nose, and decorated the strings around his neck and wrists. Hongjoong told you Orcs marked their victories on their bodies; those with the heaviest amount could be Warchief. You ran your hands over the paw prints on his chest, feeling his muscles flex as you brushed his nipples. The hardness poking your sex, you couldnât help grinding against it while you felt up and down his torso. So big. So strong. You imagined him being able to withstand any foe and lift up things twice his size. It aroused you. Taking up one of his hands, you stuck a finger in your mouth so heâd see you suck on it.Â
âI want you to suck my dick just like this,â he ordered, shoving the finger further into your mouth. âTake it out for me, and pleasure me how I want.â
You nodded, and reached down his body to the strings of his shorts. Heâd obviously shed off some clothes before joining you. The idea that he couldnât wait until you woke up turned you on more. Straddling his legs, you bent down to pull his pants to his thighs. He was huge. Dark with a pink tip rising up, you drooled. Your pussy pulsed, and you mounted one of his thick legs. Grinding into the smooth flesh, you used one hand to stroke his cock in unison. The Orc didnât mind this, as he allowed you to pleasure yourself while you pleasured him. You couldnât stop yourself from picturing how much cum those heavy balls carried. Stroking him slowly, you kept it lifted as you took one of them in your mouth. You rolled it around with your tongue, gingerly tracing the curves and cradling it on the tip for a moment. His content rumbles told you he was enjoying himself highly. You did the same to the second ball, softly moaning to give the vibrating feeling all men loved. Your hand languidly rubbing his tip, and your mouth teasing his balls, the Orc became a groaning mess under you. Your clit brushing his leg, you languidly dragged it across the hard muscle and whimpered. Having his balls in your mouth gave you so many ideas.Â
Soon, he grabbed the back of your head to put your mouth on his leaking tip. Readily, you accepted it between your lips and sucked softly. He kept a hold on your hair, and pushed you down. Because you no longer felt pain, having half his cock filling your mouth did not hurt at all. Instead, you started grinding on him faster. Like a dog in heat, you couldnât stop. You bobbed your head up and down while using your free hand to stroke the rest of him in unison.
âLittle whore,â he moaned, watching you eagerly suck his cock. âI have a feeling I know why the goblin was so eager to be rid of you.â He held your head in place as he started bucking upwards, using your mouth like a toy. âHe couldnât handle your appetite. Puny little men arenât blessed with the same strength,â he let out a moan as you sucked him harder and grinded faster, âThe gods do not favor men who-who scheme and cheat. They-Th-They favor strength and power. I have both, little human, and youâre going to find that out soon. Get on my cock with your back to me. Now.â
You did as he said, eager to see this âstrengthâ of his. It became clear very quickly. This Orc had no problem handling you on his own. Hands gripping your waist, he lifted you easily over his erection and slowly sunk you down onto him. Even though it was nothing but pleasurable, your new master didnât seem to care if it did or not. He guided you down to the base, where his tip stayed right in the very middle of your body. You could feel a slight bulge in your belly when he leaned you forward. The Orc grunted a laugh when you immediately started lifting and lowering your hips. Ass cheeks rippling in each move, he gave each side hard smacks that brought out small yelps of enjoyment. You felt him tear your shorts apart to see more of your ass bouncing on his hips. You nearly came again when he pushed a finger into it.
âDo you enjoy having both filled, little whore?â he asked, amused by your reaction.
âYe-yes!â
âThen I will make use of both,â he said, and started fingering it faster.
It didnât take much longer for another climax to make an appearance. However, this time he didnât let you. He instantly pulled you off him right as it reached the end. You are meant to make him cum, not the other way around. He forced you on your hands and knees, and cleanly removed your tattered bottoms. You heard him spit, then rub it over your fluttering ass hole.
âMake me cum,â he ordered, smacking your ass right as he sunk into it. The pressure snuck up on you, and you arched with your eyes widening. âUse this tight body to make me finish inside you.â
He held your legs up to his hips, and you leaned on your elbows to push into him. You swore the man reached right into your guts in this position. Clenching your cheeks, you did your best to milk his cum out. You wanted nothing more. Soon, the Orc lifted you by your breasts and started swinging you onto his length easily. Suspended over the bed, you couldnât do anything except hold onto the hands grabbing your tits. As expected, the Orcâs grunts became louder and more strained as his cock shuddered within you.
âYes, yes,â you huffed, tightening your ass as much as possible, âPlease, give me your cum. That's all I ask for, please. I promise I will be a good fuck slave. I promise, I promise, oh god, I promise!â
He obliged you without another word. It was hot, heavy, and so good. He groaned and grunted as he continued his pace, his cum spilling out in each push. This delightful sensation brought on your own orgasm again, and you shuddered and screamed when he kept you flushed against him. Pushing you onto the bed, he kept a hand on your back while he positioned your hips upwards. Into your throbbing cunt he went, not slowing down or showing any tenderness. His heavy balls smacking into your clit, his cock nearly split your pussy in two again. Your eyes rolled back from the barrage of sensations hitting you. It was so good. How could you try fighting this off? Why did you?
âBe a good slut,â he wrapped you in his arms, mouth on your ear, âAnd take my seed in your tight hole. Your ass looks so sweet leaking with it. Your cunt will look just as nice.â
âGod, let me have it,â you said in a strained moan. Teeth clenching tight, you held onto the bed as he fucked you into it fast and hard. âMake me take every drop.â
He pushed your head into the bed, using it as leverage. The restraint left you helpless to stop him even if you wanted to. Like heâd commanded, you used your tightness to squeeze his massive cock. You noticed he hadnât gotten soft at all. He stayed fully hard even after his orgasm. Perfect. A cock that doesnât get soft easily. Itâs exactly what you wanted.
He forced you onto your back right as he climaxed. Hand around your throat, the other groping your breast, he kept himself right to the hilt once his dick started twitching. With his fingers squeezing your throat, your moans came out in small gurgles. He knew you were about to cum again. The world turned into black spots by the time you shuddered and tensed on his bed. The restriction in your windpipe combined with the orgasm suffocated you further, adding to the pleasure. Only when you stopped shaking did he release you. Your legs remained open while you took large gulps of air, each breath refilling your lungs. You then reached out to his chest.Â
âAnother round?â He asked, bending to suckle your teat.
âMay I?â
âMm, yes.â
The Orc hadnât lied. He could certainly handle the curseâs appetite. It took multiple orgasms, and positions before he finally grew soft in your hands. Streams of translucent and white cum covered your body and dripped from your holes. For the final time, you kept your mouth open as he stroked himself over you. Yet, despite the tiredness and heaviness of your body, you ached for more of him.
âSweet pet,â he chuckled, using a cloth to wipe your face for you, âIt seems your curse isn't to be taken lightly.âÂ
âYou know about it?âÂ
âI do. His Lordship told me in his letter,â he stood up and walked to a trunk nearby. âHis bird came a few days ago. He was aware of my deal with Kang, and said to get you in the bargain somehow. He warned me that you might be losing yourself, and to give you this when I finish you.â
He came back to you with a small clear bottle. You took it gingerly, examining the thin liquid inside. It felt cold. Very cold. So cold you thought it might be ice. Thin smoke took up the rest of the space, swirling around above the elixir. When you uncorked it, the smoke came out smelling like peppermint and chamomile. Hongjoong brewed you a similar concoction when you caught a fever once.Â
âWhat is it?âÂ
âA fever tonic,â he said. âI'd drink it quickly before the smoke disappears.â
Without caution, you downed the sweet drink. It brought a cooling, refreshing sensation over your body. The heat coming from your brand doused out like a roaring fire. When you gulped the last of it, the fogginess drowning your senses lifted. You blinked back weariness to see the spacious tent around you. The sweltering heat sapping away from you made the cabinâs cold chill even more noticable. Snow blew in from underneath the wooden cabin door and lined the window ledges. Small bits of steam came off from your arms like a hot pan under cold water.Â
âThe curse burns you from the inside,â he said. âYou should stay without clothes until you start to feel the chill.â
He lifted you from the floor and carried you to a large tub. Clearly meant for him, you had ample space inside when he lowered you into it. The cold water refreshed you, and the faint smell of marigold oil came from the surface. The Orc gently wiped you clean with a soft cloth, taking care to get the messiest parts.
âIâm Jongho,â he said, putting the cool cloth on your warm face. âChief of the Bonebreak Orcs.â
âIâm YN,â you replied, desperate to move into the hand cleaning you.
âLord Kim holds you very dearly to him. He never gives his cursed pets relief.â He then asks with real concern, âAre you not aching? I noticed you didn't even bleed.â
âYou arenât the first big one Iâve had,â you said.
âThen Yeosang must havs been disappointing,â he smirked. âHis tiny cock wouldnât be able to fully pleasure you like I could.â
âYou really donât like him, huh?â
âI am not fond of his race, no,â he replied. âGoblins are weak, scheming, lying creatures who will do anything to get rich. They have no shame or honor. I only tolerate them because they have helped my people advance in our weaponry, and because Lord Kim has united our races.â
âHow?â
âThrough trade deals, treaties, territories and marriages.â
âMarriages?â An Orc and goblin marriage sounded ridiculous.
âMy cousin wasnât fond of the idea either,â he snorted. âBut, we are marching into perilous times, and the north must stand together if it does not wish to fall.â
âI can think of something that stands with me,â you said, sitting up to show him your breasts.
Leaning over, you wrapped an arm around to kiss him. He let you have a few soft, slow kisses before he pushed you away gently. He stood to remove the rest of his clothes, his cock exposed once he pulled down his shorts. You licked your lips when you saw it inches from you, flaccid but still considerable in size. He pushed you forward to sit down behind you. Nestled in his embrace, Jongho used his bare hands to massage you under the water.
âThe goblins have their uses,â he continued, rolling his thumbs over your thighs. âThey may not be warriors, but they have their sharp minds and quick wit. That cannot be said of some other Orc tribes.â Placing soft kisses on your neck, he parted your legs to touch between them. You held onto his forearms for something to grab. âKim urged me to strengthen our alliance with them. Our war galleys with their air ships will do considerable damage to our enemies if we go to war. Their trade routes will be safer going through our lands rather than the Southern ones.â He made lazy zig-zag patterns on your clit, and you wriggled around to it. âKim is a strong, capable warrior who has the respect of all Orc tribes. It is because of him that we all united under one flag. My grandfather told me stories of his hard work to bring peace between us all. We used to fight amongst ourselves for land and resources; we killed each other off. Heâd told my grandfather the Orcs might as well be doing the humansâ work for them. Heâd said if we did not stand together as one, we would fall apart. Some of my greatest friends and allies come from former rival tribes.â
âHe sounds like an-an honorable guy.â
âHe is. He even convinced the Naga and Dragonites to work together, and those races have lots of bad blood between them.â
âI noticed.â
You gave a small cry when his fingertip pushed to your entrance. âYou should give the gods an offering for your good fortune. Lord Kim does not take slaves, yet he has chosen you to be his.â
âYes, I'm so fortunate,â you rolled your eyes.Â
âYou are,â he insisted. âHe has gone to great lengths to reach you, and given you aid against your brand. He could allow you to suffer, yet it seems your suffering does not please him.â
âIs it supposed to?â
âIt should.â He pushed in the second knuckle. âThis new war may destroy everything the north has built. That boy king sits on his throne and declares our land as his; he says his ancestors discovered it and therefore it belongs to him. Ha, we shall show him. The Orcs do not bow to any man or boy, crown or no crown. If he thinks he and his little tin men can come onto our lands, he is mistaken.â He pushed his finger to the last knuckle, bringing on a new wave. âI will paint our mountains with their blood. I will tear down their forts, destroy their ships and break their bones. But first,â he kissed your ear, fully fingering you now, âIâm going to fuck as many of their women as I can.â
Lifting your legs over the sides of the tub, he started fingering you again. You barely comprehend anything heâd said with his hands on you. It took only a few pumps and his thumb on your clit to make you cum again. Touching you didnât appear to make him hard, which upset you somewhat. He laughed when he spotted your disappointment.
âI have plans to make,â he said. âYour master will be arriving soon.â
He gave you a soft kiss, his small tusks brushing the sides of your mouth, and lifted you from the tub. This time, you dried yourself off. A young female Orc with long braided hair appeared through the door wearing layers and layers of wool and leather. She held a bundle in her hands with a pair of boots. Her tusks growing past her top lip, she gave you a kind smile as you finished drying yourself.Â
âYou must be YN,â she said, putting down the clothes. âI am Talia, Jongho's sister.â
âNice to meet you.â
âKim told us you would be arriving with my brother,â she said, âSo I had a special cabin made for you. It has everything you need for now.â
âThat's kind of you.â
âUs Orcs aren't complete beasts,â she replied with a smile. âI also brought you some clothes for when your heat dies out. Trust me, you'll need it.â
âThis might sound dumb but, where exactly are we? I was sort of out of it on the way here.â
âBlackstone Canyon,â she said, adding coal to a nearby brazier. âWe're up in the mountains, so it's cold here year round.â
âThat must suck,â you said, âBeing cold all the time.âÂ
âOh, we're used to it.â Jongho came back, fixing a wolfskin cloak over his shoulders. âYou southerners know nothing of the real north. Many humans died in our canyons because they couldn't handle it.â
âWhich means I should be bundled up,â you said, walking to the clothes on the bed.Â
âAnd you can start with this.â
Jongho picked up the first article of clothing, and presented it to you. A shawl made of grey and white went across his arms, and you noticed four small rabbit feet hanging from the corners.Â
âIt is customary for a Warchief and a guest to exchange gifts,â he explained. âLord Kim already gave me mine, so I am giving you yours.â
âThank you,â you nodded, taking the rabbit fur. âYou, um, hunted it?âÂ
âHunted, skinned and fashioned it,â he confirmed proudly. âRabbits are fast, clever creatures. This will bring you luck in trials to come.â
âThank you. What did Kim give you?â You dreaded the answer, knowing it must have been you.Â
âAn axe,â he went to a corner where he picked up a double sided axe, âEnchanted with ice.â He rolled it in one hand and the runes along the sharp edges turned bright blue. âAn Orc never has too many weapons.â
âMy brother is an armor and weapon fanatic,â Talia told you as she helped you into a wool shirt. âFor future reference, he loves axes and spears the most. They are his preferred weapons.âÂ
âGood to know.â
Talia helped you lace up the other pieces of clothing, and then you felt fully warm again. Fixing a hat with side flaps on your head, Talia gave you the last piece.Â
âI believe this is yours.âÂ
She held up a necklace and you gasped. In her hand was a moonstone necklace. Your necklace. You walked over to her, taking it with a shaking hand. Right away, you felt him close to you. You felt him right in your chest, chasing away the cold.Â
âThank you,â you sniffed. âI thought I had lost it forever.â
âKim knew you'd lost yours and made you a new one. This one, he says, is a lot stronger and will keep you safe from all curses and spells.â She noticed your teary eyes, seeing you bring it to your lips, âYou must be very special to him. He made this especially for you, he said. You two have known each other a long time.â
âWe have.â You smiled, feeling the smooth stone encased in silver. âI can't believe I didn't see it before,â you said, tears spilling on your cold cheeks. âI've been so blind this entire time. I should have known when he first started talking to me. All the cryptic stuff he'd say just went right over my head.â
Hongjoong. Your Hongjoong. The only reason you kept on going. He had been right behind you the entire time.Â
âHe's very eager to get here,â Jongho said. âHe is even riding Aerion again. He hasn't ridden her in decades.âÂ
âAerion?â
âHis Wyvern. Huge beast. Unable to be bested in battle.â
âOnly Kim has ever beaten and bonded with her. She is terrifying to enemies but sweet to her friends,â Talia said. Before she could say anything else, a delighted giggle came through the tent.Â
Two small Orcs came rushing into the cabim. The taller of the two, a boy with short twisted braids, hurried to Jonghoâs side so quickly he bumped right into his side. Behind him ran a girl, long locs held back with a small flap cap, beaming excitedly at Talia.
âPapa, Papa!â The boy called Jongho, âI saw Aerion! I really saw her!â
âWhere?â
âWe were scouting with Uncle Taeyong on Frost Point,â he said excitedly, âAnd we looked through his binoculars-â
â-And we saw her from far away!â the girl cheered. âShe's even bigger than before. She's like this big,â she stretched her arms out wide, âAnd with a really long tail!â
âUncle Taeyong says she has babies with her!â said the boy. âCan we pet them when she comes? I've never seen a wyvern baby before!â
âI want to ride Aerion! Do you think Uncle Kim will let me, Auntie Talia? You can ask if it can be our gift.â
âThat isn't how gifting works, blossom,â Talia giggled, fixing her skewed hat. âAerion is a deadly beast, not a pet.â
âBut Uncle Kim is her friend so he can ask her for me.â
âWe'll see,â Jongho said, petting her head. âYN, these are my children: Willow and Sunghoon. Children, this is YN. She is Uncle Kimâs wife.â
âUm, hello.â
The pair stared at you for a second, then rushed you. âAuntie!â
You giggled in surprise as they both hugged you. âAuntie?â You looked at Jongho.Â
âYou're Kimâs mate,â Jongho explained. âHe's an uncle to them, an older male. You're an older female and his mate, so you're an Auntie now.â
âPapa said you would be here,â said Willow. âCan I braid your hair? I've been practicing and I'm getting really good at it.â
âDo you want to see my sword?â Sunghoon asked, already withdrawing a wooden sword. âI made it myself. Pretty neat, huh?â
âVery,â you said, being ushered to sit by little Willow.Â
âPapa is training me,â he said, already swinging and slashing his sword at invisible foes. âI'm going to be a Warchief just like him when I grow up!â
âNo you're not, because I'm going to be Warchieftess,â said Willow, parting your hair.Â
âThere are no Warchieftesses.â
âYes there are!â
âName one!â
âMasala from the Moonstone tribe, and Takasha of the Jade Sun.â
âThey're dead. They don't countâŠâ
As the siblings bickered, Jongho sharpened his new axe and Talia began throwing meat onto the hot coal fire. You basked in their normalcy. You hadn't felt this kind of peace in a while. The curse completely dormant, your head clear, you held onto the moment.Â
You traveled the kingdom in a way you wouldn't have chosen, meeting people who only wanted to use you, and receiving nothing but abuse. Hongjoong would not have let this happen, and if it did, he'd make those responsible pay for it. You held onto your necklace, your thumb running over the rough stone, and imagined his deft hands working the rock himself. You saw him muttering in the same rough language Mingi had, enchanting your necklace with protective spells. It must have killed him being so close but still far from you. Fate put so much in between the both of you. Was it some kind of crazy test? It certainly felt like a âtrialâ. Several of them.Â
Hongioong. He had been with you the entire time, doing his best to reach you while fate kept pulling you from him. You should have known sooner. You wondered why he never told you. Was he ashamed of it? You didn't see why he would be. You would've loved bragging about sleeping with a real demon.Â
Deeming your braids perfect, Willow and Sunghoon dragged you to the training yard. The Orcs kept their homes on stilts above the ground, and a large fire burned in the middle of the circle. The bright orange and yellow flames danced despite the soft winds, and you guessed it must be some kind of magical fire. The snow thinly covered the ground, but it still crunched underneath your boots and you definitely felt the freezing winds. Even with their appearance, the Orcs did not show malice or distaste; nobody smirked knowingly or licked their lips. They didnât notice you at all. Out of habit, you searched for a collared slave or a designated area for them, but you didnât find anyone like that.Â
âThere arenât any slaves here,â you said, refreshed by the idea.Â
âOrcs do not use slaves,â Talia replied. âWe work the land ourselves. Only the weak use slave labor. Everyone does their share and contributes to the tribe. Even those who serve the old Warchief are chosen and given the choice to serve or not. Now, most of them do since serving a Warchief in his old age is considered an honor.â
âThatâs refreshing to see. Everywhere Iâve gone in the place, Iâve been put in chains and told Iâm a slave.â
âThat is because the other lords are weak,â you heard the disdain in her voice. âThey kidnap and enslave people to make themselves feel more powerful and strong. The Orcs believe one finds their strength through battle, not how many slaves serve them.â She looked over at you as you reached a sectioned area. âYou are safe here, YN. Nobody will clamp chains on you. Iâm sure Kim will kill anyone who does.â
âYeah, he would.â
You stood by as Orc warriors clashed swords, wearing heavy armor and wielding large weapons. Everyone stopped when Jongho appeared, stopping to bow to their Warchief before continuing. You marveled at the agility and speed of them. Their size should work against them, but it actually worked for them. You wondered what Hongjoong did to the men whoâd taken you hostage. Did he kill them? Torture them? Make them pay in a way that twists their soul? Watching two Orcs spar, you knew he didnât kill them. One didnât have to be a politician to know killing an ally would result in less help or possible retaliation. But, he wouldnât let them get away scott-free.Â
âHave you ever held a sword before?â Jongho asked out of curiosity, picking up one of the smaller swords from a rack.Â
âNever,â you shook your head. One Orc slammed his club across his opponentâs face hard, causing teeth to be knocked onto the floor. You winced watching him spit up blood into the snow. âA knife a few times, but never anything super dangerous.â
âThen allow me to be your tutor.â
âOh, don't, I-â
â-I insist.â
âGo on,â Talia encouraged, lightly bumping your shoulder. âIt's not everyday you get a lesson from a Warchief.â
You took the sword. Strange in your hand, the hard leather in the pummel felt rough on your palms and it weighed in your hand. A practice sword for children, you suspected. Jongho stood behind you, and guided one foot in front of the other. His touch wasnât sensual, but the firmness still sparked goosebumps.Â
âYouâre small compared to most Orcs,â he noted, making it more obvious by nearly encompassing you, âBut size doesnât equate strength. Youâll be faster, and harder to hit.â
âWhich is a good thing?â
âYes,â he chuckled. âYour sword is light, so it can be held with one hand while the other can hold another weapon or a shield.â
He picked up a small bronze shield, and helped you slide it over your arm. âI tell all my clan that learning to fight is essential in life. If youâd known how to at least properly defend yourself, you mightâve gotten through your trials easier.â
âI didnât really need to know how to swing a sword where Iâm from,â you said. âIt was only when I left home that it mightâve been useful.â You recalled Seonghwaâs captain, who easily disarmed and subdued you in chains. The little letter opener youâd held couldâve been useful if you had known what to do.Â
âWhere are you from?â He asked, low voice rumbling in your ear as he helped with hand placement.Â
âGold Rush. Itâs a farming town a little south of the border,â you said, taking a deep breath to beat back the reaction. While your mark didnât burn, you still found Jonghoâs touch comforting. âItâs not exactly a booming town, so nothing special or dangerous happens there.â
âIs that where you met Kim?â
âYes,â you smiled.Â
The memory came back to you as Jongho took his position in front of you. It had been a regular night at the Roosterâs Nest. The drinks flowed freely, the dancers entertained the patrons, and everyone was having a good time. Youâd come onto the scene right in the middle of it all. In a sheer lavender dress, accented with gold, youâd been on stage when you noticed him. A stranger in a black hooded cloak came walking into the brothel, a pipe hanging from his mouth. Heâd immediately caught your interest. He didnât seem like the rest of the men in the place. You watched him talk to Namjoon, the two exchanging words before Namjoon slid him a pint of ale. He leaned on the bar, drinking, and removed his hood. He was handsome, you remembered. Handsome in a way youâd never seen before. Youthful with thick black hair, he carried a certain mischievous charm that other men did not have. The attraction was instantaneous. You continued dancing, hoping it might grab his attention, but he seemed caught up in his own world.Â
âGood,â Jongho said after your swords met a few times, âYouâre a quick learner, and light on your feet.â
âI was a dancer back home.â
Eventually, he did notice you and that was when you felt it. From across a sea of drunk patrons, you and him instantly became one piece. His eyes, round and dark, scanned over your as you whirled your hips. You remembered the goosebumps he created when you saw him coming your way. He stopped right at the edge of your stage, taking an empty seat and sipping quietly. It was only you and him. You suddenly wanted to impress this man. You wanted his attention on you all night. That never happened before. Men always bore you. They were such simple creatures. Yet, this stranger didnât appear simple or boring. He proved that when you finally finished and walked up to him.Â
âDancing and fighting are no different,â Jongho replied, blocking your feeble movements. âHit harder,â he instructed, âYou have to put feeling behind your attacks.â
âLooking for a friend, handsome?â Youâd asked him, smirking down at him.Â
âIf that friend is you, then Iâve been searching all my life.âÂ
You swung the sword at Jongho a few more times, and yelped when you blocked his harder ones. Never did you think youâd be sparring with an Orc. Hongjoong told you a similar story that night, with you on his lap and a beer in his hand. You hadnât believed him. A lot of men told you outrageous stories to try and impress you, but Hongjoong proved it. Youâd gasped when he showed you the thick, horrendous scar going from his shoulder to his chest. Heâd said heâd gotten into a fight with an Orc he met on the road, and theyâd slammed their hatchet across his shoulder. You then asked if you could see the rest of his scars.Â
âDid you ever fight Kim?â you asked Jongho, breathing heavily to catch your breath.Â
âMe? Once,â he said, âBut it was a friendly spar, nothing serious.â
âHe has this scar on his shoulder,â you stood upright, body slightly worn from the work. âHe said he got it from fighting an Orc.â
Jongho smiled, âYes, he did. Heâd gotten into an argument with a Jade Sun Orc, and us Orcs only settle disagreements one way. Kim fought them using only his martial skills, no magic. An Orc spar ends when one of the combatants gets three cuts. Kim got two, his opponent got four. Iâve seen very few humans survive against an Orc.â
âHeâs pretty special,â you grinned proudly, âIâm not surprised.â
That first night together was beyond words. The both of you poured copious amounts of passion into the moment. Youâd slept with plenty of men before but itâd been shallow and meaningless. With Hongjoong, you thought youâd finally met your match. He did things to you that most clients wouldnât. He made you his priority. Your pleasure and satisfaction meant more to him than his own. Youâd never given a man a free session before, but you had for him. The orgasms were payment enough. Letting him lay in your bed afterwards, sweaty and breathless, became your favorite moment. Hongjoongâs aura was protective and caring. If heâd been there the night Haeyoung cursed you, she wouldnât have swung from the tree.
Sheâd be laying in little pieces.
The sword and shield weighed down on you after a while, but you fought through the pain. Even if he wasnât there, you wanted to make Hongjoong proud of you. You didnât want his friends thinking heâd picked a weak mate. Jongho complimented your footwork, noting how easily you moved around and towards him. Talia gave pointers from the sidelines, which helped you get a cut or two in.
âYou fight well, Auntie,â Sunghoon said, coming up to you and Jongho when you took a break. âHave you really never fought anyone before?â
âNot at all.â
âYouâre a natural,â Talia grinned, bringing over two cups of water. âKim will be proud of you.â
âMaybe if we both get good enough,â Willow appeared from behind her, âWe can both be Warchieftesses and have our own tribe.â
âI wouldnât say ânoâ to that,â you smiled down at her then gulped the water.Â
It was then you noticed men lifting up long sharpened planks of wood over their shoulders. You watched them pass by towards the entrance to the village where you saw more men hammering a fence.Â
âA barricade,â Jongho explained when you looked at him. âOur enemy can come to our door any day now, and we must be prepared. Itâs mostly maintenance and reinforcement to keep them from knocking it down.âÂ
âThe humans you talked about earlier?â
âYes,â he nodded. âHopefully, Kim shows up before they do. We need all the warriors we can find.âÂ
âWhatâs the deal though? The South doesnât typically care about the North from what Iâve always understood.â
âIt used to be that way,â he twirled his sword around idly, âBut things changed when the southern king died.â
âWhen did he die?âÂ
âA month ago, then his son took over the throne. I donât know if you know anything about Jeffery, but heâs a spoiled, entitled, hot-headed, impulsive bastard. Weâd hoped his sister, Ophelia, might take over her fatherâs throne as his first born, but the council favored Jeffery simply because he is a man,â he snorted. âHumans have always put gender above rights. Orcs do not change power by birth, but strength.â
âHe wants to take over the North, Iâm guessing?â
âHe believes it belongs to him. Kim isnât our king, but he has earned our collective respect as a leader. He is leader of our council. Princess Ophelia told her brother it was unwise to cross any of the northern lords, but Lord Kim tops us all.â
âAnd youâre going to fight?â
âWith everything we have,â he nodded. âKim was meant to be bringing all the allied powers together, but I suppose his preoccupation with you has derailed those negotiations. Heâll have to make up for lost time once heâs come for you.â
âExplains why Seonghwa thought I was a gift to butter him up.â
âIâm sure Kim didnât intend for that to happen,â Jongho said, getting back into a defensive stance. You copied his movement, and exhaled deeply. âYou have been a slippery one from what he says.â
He advanced, and you blocked his first blow despite the force it took. The both of you danced around with your swords. You were knocked on your back when he pushed at your shield. âFate hasnât been very kind to either of us.â
âMy mother used to say,â he offered his hand to help you stand, âThat the gods put us through trials to test us. Perhaps you were meant to carry a curse that would lead you far from home, where youâd learn the ways of the world.â
âI already knew the âways of the worldâ,â you said, dusting dirt from your jacket. You made the first move this time, making sure to counter and block with your shield.Â
âNot of our world,â he pointed out when your swords met, âYour mateâs world.â He beat you back with light slashes that ached your arms, but you kept your sword in place with shaky hands. The blows eventually broke your strength and you lowered your arms to ease the ache. This left you open, and Jongho knocked you back again. âThe gods may have put you on this path to change history. They might have put you on it to test you, strengthen you, or prepare you for trials to come. We donât know what they have in store for us. We can only trust and keep our faith.â
âI wish theyâd sent a letter instead of giving me a curse,â you sighed, still on the ground to muster up energy to stand. âThis journey has been one shit show after another.â
âIt isnât a trial if it isnât difficult,â he held out his hand to bring you to your feet again. âKim went through similar tests. I believe it changed him.â
âReally?â
âYes, especially during the war.â
âHow long ago was this war?â you asked, shaking off the soreness growing in your body.Â
âAbout fifty years ago?â
âFifty?â Hongjoong looked so much younger than that. âAre demons, like, super old?â
âTheyâre immortal,â he said. âKim is the only demon Iâve ever met, so Iâm not entirely sure.â
You didnât know why Hongjoong never mentioned this to you. He said he could tell you anything; that he shared pieces of himself with you that he hadnât with anyone else. That didnât sound very true if everyone knew his identity but you. Did he not fully trust you? It hurt to think about. Swinging swords with Jongho, his children cheered whenever you managed to stay on your feet longer than two minutes. You used the burning pain to ignore the flashes of his charming smile and shut your eyes whenever you thought of the things he whispered to you.Â
âYou should try a bow!â said Willow, who took your hand right when you left the sectioned yard. âPapa says itâs useful to know how to use a bow and arrow, because then you can fight but also get your own food.â
She took you to an archery range with Jongho and Talia trailing behind. Jongho handed you a small bow with a sheath of arrows. He stood behind you once more to show you the proper placement.Â
âYou might do better as an archer,â he commented, âBut it requires just as much strength to use than a sword.â
âThis would have been helpful when I was in the woods,â you said. âThen I could have fought off those damn goblins, maybe the lycans too, or escaped the Dragonites or Naga.â
âGoblins, yes, but the rest? Unlikely.â He put his hand on your waist, giving it a gentle squeeze, âIf you had been with someone mighty and strong, they could have protected you.â
âLike who? Kim?â
He brushed his lips to your ear, âMe. If Kim had sent you to me first, I would have protected you from the entire world.â
âA bold statement to make to a woman you only just met,â you said, letting him help you pull the string to your cheek.Â
âThe gods brought us together for a reason, YN,â he said. âLike with Kim, you were meant to be here at this moment.â
âAnd weâll have no idea why?â
âWe can speculate,â he said, the sensuality running through his tone, âLater on in your cabin, if youâd like. Kim wonât object. You still have your curse on you.âÂ
Goosebumps formed underneath your clothes remembering that morning. âI donât know,â you smirked, aiming right at the bullseye a few yards away. âIâm sure Kimâs left a trail of bodies behind him because they touched me without his permission. Iâd hate for that to happen to you, Warchief.â
âThe only permission I need is yours.âÂ
You let go of the arrow, and it completely missed the target. âCrap,â you hissed in disappointment.Â
âYou have more arrows,â he said, giving you another.Â
It took a couple of shots before you started landing on the actual target. Several arrows stuck around the outer rim of the red circles, which you supposed might be a good thing. Your shoulder and arm ached from the constant pulling and loosening of the arrow. When you took your break, Jongho lifted you off the ground.Â
âYou seem tired,â he said, but you heard the suggestion in his tone, âLet me take you to your tent.â
âYouâre the boss around here.â
Jongho carried you back to your cabin, and your mark gave the slightest tingle. It focused on his large hands cupping your bottom, which occasionally gave small squeezes. The grip you kept on his shoulders could be interpreted as you holding onto him, but he knew better. When he brought you into the small cabin, he laid you on a soft bed of furs and blankets where he hovered over you. Kissing him felt odd at first, since his small tusks brushed the sides of your lips, but you adjusted quickly. The heat radiating off his muscled form kept you from the chill entering your cabin, which came in handy once he started undressing you.Â
âYouâre divine,â he groaned, kissing down your neck and chest to your tits. âA true gift from the gods.â
Your hands slipped into his short, dark hair, rubbing to the back of his neck and shoulders. Not a single ounce of fat was on him, only muscle. His shoulders flexed when you felt them, and you traced their definition. When his tongue started circling one nipple, you began grinding into his midsection. You whined at the tusk he brushed over the hard center, feeling his groans vibrate on the skin, and grinded more. He easily undid your trousers, moving to slide them off along with your underwear. Fully naked, your desire finally took over and you began tugging off his own clothes. Little by little, his taut body revealed itself. You peppered kisses on his neck, giving soft bites to the tough skin as you pulled down his pants at last. The cock that so easily pleasured you flopped out of the leather fabric, and onto your stomach. Jongho did not stop you from reaching for it, moaning when you wrapped your hand around the tip.Â
His hand pushing your thighs further apart, Jonghoâs fingers grazed the dampening folds. His lips found yours again as he gently circled it. He didnât stop you from meeting his hand, encouraging it with shallow pushes to your entrance. His dick throbbing in every short stroke, you couldnât help imagining it deep inside you again. Your arousal kept you from finding sense in the act. You body yearned to have him. If there was a dick you enjoyed as much as Hongjoongâs, it was Jonghoâs thick length.Â
âFuck my hand,â he groaned, pushing the tip of his finger inside you.Â
You didnât object. You sunk your hips down to the large digit, whirling them around to feel him curl against the tight walls. Jonghoâs low grunt sounded against your breasts, where he tenderly sucked. One hand holding onto his broad shoulder, the other kept feather-light strokes that drove the Warchief wild. Soon, warm precum spilled onto your fingers and it became easier to stroke him. You cried out when his finger finally found your g-spot, pushing up against it in every push.Â
Jongho then laid down on the bed with you kneeling next to him. You didnât hesitate to put his tip in your mouth, sucking up the clear, thin streams on the underside. He pushed a finger back inside you, this time his thumb working your clit as you gradually rode it. This caused your moans to massage his cock along with your firm lips. You laid there sideways, hands around the base of his cock as you sucked him, simply enjoying his size and taste. Tongue tracing the pulsing veins of his shaft, your free hand worked the heavy balls underneath. You imagined the copious amounts of cum sitting inside them, picturing it like water in a bottle. You wanted to drain every drop wherever he wished to put it this time. You glided your head up and down when he withdrew to finger you from behind, palm pressed to your ass.Â
âYou love this, donât you?â he breathed, watching you work his dick with your mouth and hands.Â
âYes,â you gasped before sinking him further into your mouth. It hits the back of your throat in no time, stretching it slightly. Jongho held you there for a few seconds, listening to your gagging before letting you up again. âSo much,â you added, going back down to do it again.Â
âI could tell,â he started fingering you faster, âYouâre so wet already.â
âI want your cum, Warchief,â you whined, moving into his hand. âPlease, give it all to me.â
âI promise you every drop. Why donât you get on top now, hm? You can ride it however you wish.â
You straddled his waist right away, propping yourself up with your hands on his chest. He was so much bigger than you, like San in his lycan form. You weighed almost nothing to him, a feather in his strong grip. He guided you over his tip, then gingerly lowered you onto it. Feet on either side of him, hands holding onto his knees from behind, you bounced on him right away. This position gave him a perfect view of his dick stretching your hole. Jongho only rubbed the clit with his thumb, sliding it up and down in time with your movements.Â
âYouâre so small,â he groaned, âAnd lightâŠFucking you is no trouble at all to someone as strong and large as me.â
âIt feels so good,â you replied, keeping his hand on your clit while you fucked him. âDoes it feel as good for you?â
âYes,â he said, rubbing it side to side, âAnd so pretty too. I never knew human women fucked like this. Look how well youâre fucking my cock,â he pushed up into you a few times, causing you to moan louder.Â
âI can-canât hel-help it. Your dick feels amazing!â
It was when he pulled you forward that Jongho began bucking his hips to yours. You laid on top of him, head on his chest as your fists curled into the bed under him. He landed heavy smacks on both cheeks, smirking when he heard you squeal from the pleasure it brought.Â
âDo it again,â you moaned, eyes squeezed shut as his cock angled deeper inside and hit your very center. âDo that again.â
Jongho kept on slapping each cheek as he fucked into you from underneath. The few times you rode him back, he grabbed and squeezed them to guide you. You could feel him starting to twitch within you, and you chased down his orgasm. This was when he rolled you onto your back, putting your ankles behind your head and charging to your hips. Grabbing your head, Jongho forced you to watch his dick pound you. It looked divine. His thickness pushing and pulling, your soaked pussy made it glisten with your juices. Your clit throbbed, and you felt tempted to rub it but in this position, you couldnât reach it well. You could only lay there as Jonghoâs cock sent you into another world.Â
The both of you with your legs bent towards each other, arms keeping you supporting from behind, you rocked into one another slowly. Nestled between his spread thighs, you soon started meeting him faster. It drove him into a new angle that exploded stars behind your eyelids. Soon enough, you started trembling and clawing at the bed. Jongho encouraged the orgasm with quick brushes to your clit, and you came instantly. Toes curling, body sweating, and muscles quaking, you couldnât control your volume as he raised himself further up and almost curled you into a c-shape. His own climax came right after, withdrawing his cock to start stroking over you. You opened your mouth to catch the strays shooting to your face, but equally enjoyed those landing on your stomach and breasts.Â
As expected, Jongho kept going even after his first orgasm. He didnât soften at all, which you loved. In a kneeling position, Jongho sat and watched you take control over. On your feet, you stayed firm on the balls of your feet, holding onto his shoulders as you rode him again. You stayed in this position until you began shuddering again. Jongho held onto you to keep you from tipping over, and you tightened your grip on him. This time, he waited until you finished to force you off him and onto the floor. On your knees, you opened wide as he pushed your head down to his base. You didnât waste time in stroking and sucking him, savoring the juices mixed all over him. When you saw him gripping the bed, you buried him in your throat. His hot cum shot right down your gullet, hardly giving you a chance to swallow and nearly suffocating you. When he pulled away, strings of white kept you connected before you licked them up.Â
He then took you standing up in the middle of the cabin. Neither of you could stop. You didnât object to him bending you over a table, slamming himself into you as he kept you inches off the ground. He kept one leg raised when he held you against a wall, and then both of them when he had you in a chair. Each orgasm outdid the last one. You each became feral animals, acting on primal instinct and desire. His hand around your throat, he gave tender squeezes when he laid you sideways on the bed, while his other hand toyed with your oversensitive clitoris. You bit and scratched at one another. Your kisses became hard, nearly bruising each other in the heat of the moment. It only passed when you both saw rays of sunlight coming through the glass windows.Â
âYou may tire from battle,â Jongho exhaled, limp and still on the bed, âBut you donât tire from me.â
âI would have if it werenât for this mark on my back,â you replied, unable to move an inch towards him. Even if you felt no pain, the exhaustion remained. You did not feel the desire to continue, only to sleep.Â
That was a good sign, right?

âShe is safe with us, my lord. Your YN will find no shackles or chains here.â
Taliaâs letter comforted him. If any race despised slavery, it was the Orcs. Hongjoong reread the small scroll as Aerion and her young drank from a lake. He knew youâd be safe with them. He thanked the gods that the both of you found a bit of luck at last. No doubt, Jongho will be tempted to bed you, but youâd have a clear head whether to accept or decline it. Remembering his own times with the young Warchief, he wouldnât be surprised if he found you in the large cabin.Â
A rumble from nearby told him his mount was ready to fly again. He knew the traveling weighed on the old wyvern, and she was eager to finish this journey as well.Â
âOnly one more stop,â Hongjoong promised her, tucking the scroll into his pocket. âThen you can fly home.â
One more stop until he was with you again.Â

Choi San.
Borne from the roots of a pious tree, sprung from the ashes of his father's shadow was the Kingdom of QiÄn's esteemed Crown Prince, scholar, charming bachelor and skilled swordsman. His name roamed in the villages of foreign nations, where the people believed his rubric was the elixir of eternal strength and beauty. For his mere presence intoxicated weakened souls, harbouring an essence of rebirth within the individuals that sook a replenished health. Though it was merely an old wives tale, Choi San was indeed a potent, renown individual who rose to power after the death of his predecessor: King Choi.
King Choi, on to contrary to his beloved son, was by no means the greatest King to ever rule over the ambitious lands neither was he the poorest. Though, he was the reaction intermediate, used to form something much more powerful. A much more historical ruler ascended to the throne in his wake.
The once coddled prince, who spent his carefree childhood sauntering the seven seas, reading books until the stars blurred into the dawn, playing chess with the strategists, could no longer escape from responsibility. His father's weakened hold on his hand had almost drained the life out of him. Momentarily, he had felt soul meander towards his ancestors; though they had rejected him.
Show them how powerful a King can be.
Hunched over a small desk, in a large tent, sat Lieutenant Seok- QiÄn's first female high-ranking officer. With a quill fixed between her nimble fingers and a sore back, she scribbled away at her commanding officers report transcribing his poorly written work for the King. The dim light from the candle swayed in the desolate tent, bending to the will of small wisps of wind that flooded in through the slits between canvas fabric. With a tired sigh, she settled down her pen at last exercising the tense fibres in her muscles. A patter of loud footsteps ascended from outside the tent, her head piqued up as the fabric tore revealing Major Seong, his eyebrows creased in irritation as he stalked towards her.
"Hand me that." Snatching the sheet in front of her, her hands remained hovered in the air repressing the urge to roll her eyes at his short-tempered antics. His stern, hazel eyes peered over the sheet down at her as she stretched out her arms to correct the complacent stiffness. "King San requests your attendance his office. Major Baek will be there too." Momentarily, the Lieutenant felt a pulse of shock run through. The King requests my presence? She wasnât aware that the esteemed King knew who she was. After all, her superiors had made many attempts to dissolve the rumours of there being a female military official. It didn't occur to her why, surely that was something to be proud of, yes- it defied convention but this could potentially further QiÄn's image internationally catalysing the need for society to become modernised. Besides the Royal Army had, historically, suffered from a shortage of its members-if women had to fill the shoes of men then so be it. Unfortunately, her commanding officers did not share her contemporary mindset so she left the advocation for her less passive successor.
"Hurry up or it'll be off with our heads." Major Seong deadpanned, apologising profusely she shot out of her seat grabbing her jacket off the back off the chair before disappearing out of the tent.
Lieutenant Seok dashed through the ostentatious palace walls, her boots smacking against the marble floor heart pounding against her chest. Fixing the lapel of her jacket, she snatched a quick glance at her appearance through the blade of the guard's spear.
Chin up, chest out, shoulders back, stomach in.
A slight nod, and the heavy doors to the King's office were heaved open, the crystal white paint of the room blaring in her eyes. At the top, first and foremost sat the King's ebony chair and desk, along the expanse of the wall behind him was a bookcase full of books, the vestigial walls plastered with portraits of the preceding Kings. Large royal blue velvet curtains hung over baroque windows, reminiscent of the crests symbolic metallic silver and deep blue colours. Her own uniform was a navy blue jacket, shoulders padded with an expensive silver beadwork, and a long pleated skirt. Along her breast jacket sat her ribbon rack, adorned with all of the honorary medals she obtained during her service. Elegantly, she strode down the aisle; the King's careful eyes following her as she fell into a deep bow.
"Your Highness." She rose with grace too, hands firmly fixed at her sides, lowering her gaze before the King. "I am Lieutenant Seok." San cocked his head to the side, raising from his seat. Major Baek, the mentor to Seok stood adjacent to the King's desk sending a small sheepish smile, an odd emotion lingering behind it that she could not quite put her finger on. He was an old man, of about late sixties with thinning grey hair and a crinkled smile that stuck on his face throughout his life. He was renown for being the more compassionate of military officials she had ever come across, immediately taking the younger girl under his wing as soon as she stepped foot into the camps.
Being the only female lieutenant was more threatening to the cause than inspiring. Typically, women were not allowed to serve, in the military, unless they were Nurses or Administrators. Despite this, Lieutenant Seok's quick wits and admirable strength had her soaring through the rankings though she hated to admit that her father's occupation as Military Strategist may have been what allowed her to even step foot on the soil, or even what got Major Baek to show her some kindness. They loved to remind her of that. Though he was not the one to get her that far. Hell he had even died before the thought of joining the military had even crossed her mind.
The King rose from his chair, moving to stand in front of his desk waving a stack of papers in hand. Her eyes narrowed slightly in confusion, she shifted her gaze to Major Baek who only avoided eye contact.
"Here, I have all of Major Seong's reports. Very meticulous, very well-written. Such is what I expect of my men." The pulse of her heart rose, blood rushed through her veins at a palpable speed, clenching her pleated skirts within the tight fist of her sweaty palms. Had he realised that she was the one writing all of his reports? "Except there's a slight problem and I need you to fix it for me." San provoked, she shifted uncomfortably under his hard stare.
"Look at me whilst I speak to you." Her eyes widened, was this King deranged? Who dared to even look into the King's eyes? Tentatively, lifting her chin, she bored into his crescent eyes. His high cheekbones and defined jawline created an intimidating impression, a current of virtue circulated around him as he spoke. His robes accentuated his broad shoulders and cinched waist. "In the Battle of Myeongnyang, by how many men was Admiral Yi Sun-Shin outnumbered?"
"333 to 13." Lieutenant Seok answered before San could blink, he fought back the smirk dancing on his lips.
"In which battle did he die?"
"Battle of Noryang on December 16, 1598."
"Exactly as its written here." San held up the report again, sharing a look with Major Baek that she failed to read. "So when I asked Major Seong, why did he say Pyeongyang?" Oh God. She thought as quickly as she could, reeling her mind through ways to answer the King.
"Everybody makes mistakes, Your Highness." she answered, settling upon the weakest argument one could make.
"He said December 14, 1598. I don't think this is a mistake Lieutenant. Now, I'm not concerned that our military officials don't know our countries history. I should be, but I'm not. This here." He shook the paper as furiously as he could. "Means nothing. But I asked him to recite basic facts from this report and he stuttered like a man with a lisp." Flinching at the King's harsh insult, she fixed her gaze to the ground again realising that the King knew that all along she was writing Major Seong's reports for him, which was one of the biggest crimes one could commit as a member of the Royal Army.
"I could ask you, on the other hand, and you would read this off like it's the back of your hand. Do not lie to me, Lieutenant, have you or have you not been writing Major Seong's reports and carrying out his duties which are significantly above your pay grade?" The King's voice seethed with anger, a large gust of wind emptied into the tense atmosphere as if the wind itself was mirroring his vexation. Once again, she fleeted her gaze back to her mentor who was painfully silent during this assembly. "I asked you, not him."
"Yes." She responded, weakly. "I did, Your Highness." San sighed, dropping the reports on the table with a loud thud. He didn't need to question why, he already knew that despite the fact that she was a particularly hard-working individual committed to carrying out her duties diligently, she was also just a woman- being punished for her sex.
"As you know, every King gets to choose his General. I have to be able to trust that my General can lead me into war and win." He paused, a breath hitched in the night's air. "How does General Seok sound?" Her eyes lit up at the sound of âGeneralâ in front of her name, the urge to gasp out and cry was hanging heavy on her tongue. Looking into Major Baekâs eyes, they were full of joy and admiration for his mentee. Prior to this meeting, he had spoken with the King, believing it was time QiÄn had elevated their distinguished reputation further through their first ever female General.
"With all due respect, Your Royal Highness, there are many Majors and Lieutenant Colonels who have much more leadership experience and the desired skill set to fill this role. I am not sure if I possess the qualities that you are seeking." Besides, why had he even called her into his office? To humiliate her before giving her the title of General, to prove that even though she would have the power of the military in the palm of her hands-above all King San held a more divine power that only she could dream of?
San saw in both her eyes and her slight discomfort of her face, that it pained her to say such words. Then why did she say them? Was it the fear of being rejected by those who looked down on her? The fear that accepting this esteemed position would exacerbate the conditions she was living in. Men hated powerful women, history made that story known. Though, there was something about the woman before him being by his side, ruling his Royal Army that magnetised him.
âI disagree. You are General Officer Seokâs daughter, who helped us win a number of battles. Before he died, he told me you would win a thousand wars for QiÄn.â Major Baek inputted. She always thought that her father had a hyperactive imagination; simply put he said the things he said to motivate his daughter. But her father was never wrong.
Is this not what she always wanted? Was King San not giving it to her on a hot silver platter dish? Yet, did this not mean her hands would be drenched in blood even more than it already was?
âSacrifices have to be made, pet. In war, you sacrifice your sanity.â
"I accept this position." Falling into another deep bow, she rose as a wilted plant once did when it was blessed with water from the skies after a deserted period. "Thank you, my King. I promise I won't let you down."
General Seok strode down to her office situated in the East Wing of the castle, yet a distance from the Kingâs quarters. It was usually derelict at this time yet as she walked down she felt the burning stare of a hundred military officials, all jealous of her rank. She recounted the wave of discontentment that spun over the room like a wild fire, all questioning their noble Kingâs decision. Her mind fixated over the way her name reverberated through the room, a wave of gasps infiltrating the tense air. The officials heads snapping towards her, their mouths gaped.
"Men will never take you seriously if you are too afraid to look them in the eye." Staring at her father from across the chessboard, she bit her lower lip. "Are you afraid of me, my child?" Shaking her head no, she captured his bishop with her rook. With a contented humph, her father got up.
"Then look at me next time, when you have won. Show me that you are more powerful than Generals, wits great enough to be our Queen."
Pushing past the door to The Generalâs office, the large room was wavering with a warmth, the shut of the door silencing the bustle of movement outside the wall. Bookcases were plastered across the walls of the room, the palace brimmed with profound knowledge each published piece of literature could be found in QiÄn's halls. A large mahogany table with a soft leather chair resided by the glass pane windows overlooking the garden. On a much smaller table, in the far corner, sat a chessboard- two chairs on opposite ends. A bundle of ink quilled pens rested above the table, a stack of plain books on the right hand corner. Sighing, she dropped the pile of books in her hand onto the table.
âWar is looming over us. Freyr will not rest until they have seized our lands and we will not rest until we have secured ours." Over several generations, from the beginning of time when Kingdoms were forged from molten rock, a foreign tension bloomed between two of the most powerful nations of Earth. For the longest time, QiÄn had always been imperilled with the possibility of war; they had just been harmless threats from a King that was too dim to strike against an equally powerful nation that would cause mutually assured destruction. Until now, King Jeong proved one of the more impulsive of Kings from his ancestors. Her kingdom's safety was now at stake and she needed to protect it with her life. "Over the next few weeks we need to prepare for a potential war-â She was cut off by the grumblings of the militia.
"I will not have a woman lead me into a war."
"How pitiful, death awaits for you from the male Generals that have this country running in blood."
"You sound incredibly confident, General, that you'll lose the least number of men." One mocked, the crowd of men let out a taunting laughter only be silenced as San rose from his chair.
"Had I believed we'd conquer this war by a man, would I have not chose him to stand by my side? Do you think me unintelligible of making a wise decision?" A deafening silence punctured her ears, her head dipped under his omnipresence. Did they go reticent out of sheer embarrassment or because they thought that King San would be one to disperse their Kingdom into ashes? Granted, her first assembly as General was a disaster, the uproar from her comrades induced a thumping headache; her forehead hit against her table a long groan escaping from her lips out of sheer exhaustion.
"My, my General-you're going mad already." Hastily, she jerked up her head straightening her posture as the King slumped into the chair opposite her desk. When did he enter?
"Your Highness, should I call for some tea?" San snickered, dimples adorning his cheeks. His heart fluttered slightly at her disorientation he could not put his finger why. Perhaps it was that for the first time, the organised, composed General had been caught off guard by his surprise visit. There was something so domestic about the fact that she was summoning tea for him; he didnât even get to say âNo thank you, Iâve had three cups already and itâs one in the evening.â
Certainly, the woman before him was beautiful- he noted that on first sight. He did not know how to feel now that he assigned her the role as his General. The whole world could see her sacred beauty, she was not something for him to lock up in a treasure chest and keep her all to himself. How dare she sway his heart into unchartered seas that San had spent the duration of his life running away from.
âYour Highness, the maids have told me that you havenât had lunch yet. Perhaps we can have tea another time.â She stood by the doorway, arms folded as if she was his wife scolding him on his lack of appetite.
âFirst of all, I didnât come for tea.â Her face heated up in embarrassment; pressed in her palms in realisation that she had jumped to a sudden conclusion. âSecondly, Iâm not hungry. Iâll drink your tea anyway.â Huffing, she grabbed the tea tray from the maid thanking her before shutting the door with her foot. She picked up the porcelain teapot, the air fulfilled with the aroma of Jasmine tea; tranquillity succeeded the exhaustion felt by both King and his General.
âJasmine tea?â San questioned, he preferred green tea with its grassy undertone. Jasmine tea was too floral for him.
âYes, itâs good for calmness and mental clarity.â
âSo thatâs your secret, lots of Jasmine tea.â She nodded, placing the teacup in front of him. He sucked in a breath before raising the cup to his lips. Oh, itâs sweet. A lot sweeter than the cups he had been forced to drink as a child.
âI added honey.â The General added, on cue as if she had read his thoughts. âWith respect Your Highness, if it wasnât tea you came for: how can I help you?â He settled down the cup, clearing his throat.
âI excused Major Seong. As of tomorrow morning, he will be a normal civilian working in his fatherâs farm. Heâs best off serving the country in another way.â Her chest heaved in shock, she leaned back in her chair chewing on her lip as she could not help but feel that she was to blame.
âHe was still the best of us.â She retorted, after a long, painful silence.
âNot good enough. Otherwise I wouldnât have dismissed him. Also, I donât know if Major Baek has told you but he is retiring.â With her elbows perched on the desk, her face rested within her palms.
âDonât you have anything good to tell me, Your Majesty.â He laughed, shaking his head at her forlorn attitude.
âCall me San.â He retorted, the beauty of his name flew her heart into oblivion. âTell me something, that reads like poetry.â He blurted, though his claim was abrupt a part of her understood where he came from. Tell me whatâs on your mind, he wanted to say.
Tell me what your deepest wish is so that I can fulfil it.
âI believe, in a hundred years time, my successor will be the vessel that tells the people of QiÄn that a womanâs rule can be as bold and as true as a manâs.â His eyes narrowed, infatuation settling into his heart, bewitched by his General's moving words. âI will be the woman to win the wars against our enemies. She will be the one to win against society.â A comfortable quietude penetrated the tense atmosphere, San sat still in his chair, afraid to make a sound as he swallowed her words with a heavy heart. For the first time since his father's death, he felt weak. As if he wanted to fight the war, that she was fighting, with her. Her wish was one those that even as omnipotent as he was, he could not fulfil.
"I shall take your leave. Enjoy the office." Smiling, San strode out of the room, his powerful aura remained suspended in the air in his absence.
Within the subsequent weeks General Seok was burdened with bourgeoning responsibility, abetting a series of migraines that not even Jasmine tea could fix. They ranged from completing reports, training soldiers, attending her own training-during the day that was. Then at night, she read books on the Freyr-learning about their language, culture, and then reading upon all of their wars. She managed to find books on previous Generals that served the Freyr Kingdom, noting their battle strategies. She became reserved to her study, papers scrawled across the floor, hooking up drawing pins as she noticed trending schemes. There were multiple different outcomes, like a game of chess. One move by the opponent unravelled up to ten to the power of a hundred and twenty-three potential outcomes, much like war and its soldiers.
"You just started your job and it's already exhausting you." Her mother claimed, as she placed her book on her nightstand. Sat at the foot of her bed, the elderly woman looked at her daughter's tired eyes-witnessing the same determined gaze; once held by her husband.
"I know, a big position only means more responsibility. Besides, I think I've got most things worked out. I have a meeting with the King, tomorrow and then the whole day to myself." Letting out a stifled yawn, she sunk into her cotton sheets hair sprawled across the pillow.
"You've been busy, General." With a single nod, she watched as San drew his eyes down her veraciously detailed report. A pair of round glasses sat at the bridge of his nose, she could not help but notice how they heightened the sharp features of his face. "Your work ethic is incredible, even I don't think I could have done this in the time span you did. You can rest now."
It did not occur to her that she had fallen asleep in the King's office, right in front of His Majesty's eyes. The sight of her tenacity lead his heart to swoon a little. General Seok was a sight to behold, especially with the way the soft afternoon light streamed in through the window, beaming across her face forging a halo. Her hair which was usually straightened and fastened tightly behind her shoulders had become loose from its knot. She breathed gingerly; the strands of hair that fell structurally over her face drifting as the air spun around it. He wanted to outstretch his hand and brush the hair from her face.
"I need tighter security, here." she ordered, pointing to the farming village, the kingdom's most vulnerable district. "If I were the Freyr, I would attack here. It's unscrutinised and connects to the Valley-perfect for pushing equipment and aid through. We need to block any shipment through these borders." The valley connected to the farming village became one of the fundamental ways that the Freyr and Qian people traded over centuries.
Gathered in the War Room, the military officials were all stood around large chestnut table, a map of the world and it's seven seas. Adjacent was a black box, which she recognised as holding pawns, figurines, as well as odd bits of trinkets. The dark walls were plastered with weapons of all sorts, a preview of all the artillery they held in the War Inventory. Despite the spectrality in the thin air, there was an odd sense of comfort to be found here. Something like she could spend the rest of her days trapped within these four walls and she'd be surprisingly at comfort with it.
"If we close the bridge, how will we trade?" Major Baek questioned.
"We can trade at the Centre." Her finger fell over the busiest and the most surveyed port in QiÄn. "Let's just tell them it's closed for repair." An influx of complacency infiltrated the room. Her eyes glanced towards San, who was staring intently at the map over her shoulders, with a calculating look.
âWeâll have to have a talk with the foreign diplomats, otherwise good job General.â With a single nod, he left from the room signalling the end of the meeting. All left except Major Baek, sat in front of her, sipping on the Jasmine tea she had called for.
âYouâre doing incredibly well, dear. If itâs any reassurance.â A genuine smiled plastered on her, soothing the agitation in her muscles.
âIt is. I canât believe youâre retiring. What was a few more years? I canât do this without you.â
âYou can, you already are. Besides itâs not like I was ever going to become General.â He joked, they shared a small laugh that echoed in the dim light of the War Room, where for the last time: the man who had treated her as if she was his own daughter was soon to be a name written in a history book, his memory lost to the wind.
General Seok found that the women of the palace grew indifferent towards her success for they taunted her with dirty looks as she surpassed them. Their snake like tongues spat venomous rumours, claiming that whenever she entered the King's chambers she was carried with a promiscuous sense of duty. To which this enraged her but there was simply nothing she could do, because they were just rumours; there was no substantial proof that they were rallying against her.
"Here comes the whore." They sang in an undignified manner as she strode down the hallways, a book pressed against her chest. Biting down on her lip so she did not release a snarky remark, she merely ignored them as their giggles venerated through the hallways. Pushing through the doors to his chambers, Seok entered his bedroom finding him sat by the balcony reading a book. Her anger had diminished at the sight of him, following the pout of his pink lips, the crease between his eyes as he revelled the words; the breeze tousled his hair. Within this moment he was no longer the King that ruled over his kingdom with a tight fist and sharp mind but rather an amiable man with a thirst for knowledge. Clearing her throat, his head craned to find her standing by his desk. A strand of hair fell over his dark eyes, he rose from his seat; gaze travelling up and down her body.
âYouâre dressed like a bride.â He blurted. My bride. Clearing his throat as his cheeks blushed pink, he stuttered over his words, "Eastern brides traditionally wear red on their weddings days." Handing over the book, she sat herself down on the chair, dazing out of the window. To think of it, why did she always dress so ostentatiously around San? Was it his nobility that intimidated her? Or the need to live up to the King's standards as his General?
"What's wrong?" San chimed. She shook her head, as if there was nothing wrong with herself. Maybe the women were right, she was gnawing at his attention trying to keep him to herself. There was no denying Choi San was beautiful with his sleek dark chair, cut-throat jawline, his angelic eyes, his benefaction. His concern whenever she tired herself, slaving herself over her work. Then came his desire to stand next to her in every meeting, his body pressed close to hers fighting of all of the griping stares as she fought gruellingly to protect their kingdom.
"Nothing, nothing." With a wave of her hand, she brushed him off. He slumped down onto the chair opposite her, chin resting with the palm of his hands cupping the sides of his cheeks.
"Oh its something, something." His crescent eyes peered into hers, she wanted nothing more than to delicately kiss them. Then to drag her lips over the bridge of his nose and then his plump lips. "Is it not your duty to share the people's concerns?"
"No because I am not a member of parliament." She quipped, with a smirk that made him scoff. "My duty is to protect you."
"But you did not protect me from you." He got up from his seat, walking around the table to face her. His hands outstretched towards her face, tucking the loose strands of hair behind her ear, with his lips dangerously close to her own, she basked in the sight of her King as a hungry soul reaching for the fruits of love to which only she could hand down to him.
âSan, what am I to you, if not your general?â
"You are my heart and my soul. You are what keeps me beating, and what brings me back to life every morning. You are everything I want and even more. It is painful to be so in love with you, so tell me you don't love me and free me from this anguish." As if he had knocked the life out of her, her body glissaded under his devotion. How cruel of him to beg her to purge herself of the profound emotions she held for him. Did she not want him too, in all ways whether it may be forbidden?
"We shouldn't do this." Her mutter reached to him through a series of rough, passionate kisses-a fire burning wherever his touch lingered upon her skin.
"Then tell me to stop" But she could not as her hands ran into his hair. Her every scent pulled the strings of his heart, every pulse was hers as their arms circulated around each other in the darkness of his chambers. Every touch felt as if they would never feel again, every sight relished as if they would never see again. Their clandestine marriage of hearts was so potent, it was enough to send them into a drunken haze for eternity.
The Royal Palace was struck with chaos- servants bustling around in desperate attempts to create an illustrious image of decadence, in honour of QiÄn's annual banquet held in order to improve international relations. This year it was to celebrate the strong tradesmanship formed between the QiÄn and the East. That also included inviting their enemy, Freyr, to maintain an image of agreement to their people. Of course, this enraged her as the Freyr became more hostile, finding multiple ways to pose threats on their country. For all she knew, they could see this as a perfect opportunity to strike as the QiÄn would not want to damage foreign relations by keeping a tight security. Having raised this with the other military commanders, they all mocked her by deeming her paranoid.
âI agree.â Sanâs cold voice bellowed over the War Room. âOur allies may perceive our tightened security as a threat. The Freyr were already adamant to not attend the ball, convincing them was hard enough.â
âYour Highness, this is exactly what they want. We should at least have tighter security at the border and ports.â He shook his head in disagreement, a pang of annoyance jutting through her.
âStand down, General. You are not a member of parliament.â Swallowing the lump in her throat, she sunk her head in humiliation. He had never disagreed so bluntly before, if he had ever disagreed: he would raise the point so gently or provide another solution, not outright dissipate her suggestions. Later that day she was huddled up in a chair in her office; finishing up the finality of her report. She was so wrought with exhaustion she wished for some comfort. A pair of arms would soothe the headache from the burden of stress that persisted on her shoulders. As soon as she walked in through the doors to his chambers, he invited her with a look of irritation.
âWhat do you want?â He snapped, flinching at the harshness of his tone- she rushed forward to hand the report to him. Next time sheâd hand it to the Royal Secretariat if he was going to act this way. Turning on her heel, she hurried out of his chambers biting down her quivering lip. Wrapping her arms around herself, as if it would reprimand the damages he inflicted upon her.
Hidden behind a pillar, her head was thrown back-hands pressed over her abdomen in order to soothe the persisting ache residing. San's voice carried out of the room, to which she listened to his manufactured speech which rendered their hearts into submission. General Seok, herself, was clad in an embellished silver dress her ears and neck were bejewelled in a matching set of silver with the infamous Generalâs sword to her hip. Her eyes peered through the open doors to the ballroom-a sea of fabrics enveloping the white marble ceilings as a cacophony of sounds emptied into the room. Despite its elegance, an ominous feeling was pensile within the humidity, a dark cavern with a haunting soul ready to be unleashed onto the crowd. It was too liable, susceptible to attack.
Something felt off.
At the top through the window, she noticed a glint penetrate through the glass. The silhouette of a sharp blade pointing down in Sanâs direction as he spread his arms wide summoning the attention of the nobles. Her hand reached for the hilt of the sword, but the figure retreated. Instead, she sought a shadow move closer across the skylines, as soon as he placed one foot on the chandelier, his arrow pointed straight at the King of QiÄn. Swiftly, she stole a knife from the nearest guard. His bowstring pulled back. Dashing towards San, she drove his body into the floor as the arrow penetrated through the air, landing less than a foot away from his feet. Chucking the blade into the air, the dagger pierced through the rope holding up the chandelier- the glass sinking in the ground releasing a camaraderie of panicked screams.
Unsheathing her sword, she struck down at him only to strike again, the rim slicing through the surface of his skin. This time, he pounded a harsh blow against her to which the colliding of his weapon against hers created a screech loud enough to bleed ears; the sword in her steadfast grip was growing heavy and acuminating at her tiredness. The attacker stumbled backwards, falling to his knees under her powerful blow. The full length of her blade impaled through his heart, ripping the seams that held his soul together- blood bursting from its banks. A breath hitched in his throat, a loud thud gratified the throne room. Her hands shook as the adversaries screams mimicked the cries emptying into her detached soul; thick scarlet blood painting her fingers as her body roamed through the folds of his dead body. Bingo. Ripping the crest from his body, she threw it at San's feet.
âI want this castle searched for any more intruders.â When the Royal Guards did not move, rage flooded through her. âNow!â She roared, parading out of the room.
Her back slid slowly down the wall of the War Room, tears sliding down her cheeks. Tucking up her knees to her chest- her body wracked as an excruciating wail echoed into the room. General Seok felt the derisive stare of the chess pieces, the maps, the strategy books. What kind of General was she? One who could barely protect her king. They were right. All of them: the nobles, the ministers, officials, the noblewomen and even the servants. A woman was in no position to protect the country, she had spent hours, days and weeks cooped up drawing out plans, playing out schemes in her head, sketching them out like role play over the board. All of that work seemed futile now that the enemy was daring enough to unleash an attack against the King. The painful creak of the door snapped at her attention, she roughly wiped away her tears with her sleeve a harsh stare befalling on her face.
âI thought I told-Your Majesty.â Her rough tone transgressed into a soft voice as she bowed deeply, San rushing into the room.
âAre you ok? Youâre not hurt, are you?â She shook her head no, avoiding his gaze. âMy love, look at me.â Hesitantly, her red eyes bored into his own. Cupping her cheeks, he pressed his lips to her forehead. That was enough to break her walls again. Digging her face into his neck, she erupted into a fit of sobs, her weary body slumping against his robes. His slender fingers pulled out the clip to ease the strident tug of her hair gnawing at her scalp; his hold around her waist tightening.
âI should have listened to you. The faults mine.â Lifting her head she looked at him, mouth parted as if to reason. Placing a finger on her lips, he silenced her. âNo- none of this was your fault. You couldnât have possibly known any of this was going to happen. In fact, you told me this was a possibility and I didnât listen. It was an uncharacteristic and a foolish attack. General Seok, we have the upper hand now.â
"That's what they want us to think. God, San, my head hurts. I'm struggling. I can't come to terms with what they want."
"For now, you need to rest. You must be exhausted."
"I can't rest. Tomorrow the officials will be at my necks. 'General Seok you never saw this coming, did you?', 'This is why you should leave it to the men.' They won't see how I almost sacrificed my life to save yours, they'll only see the fact that you were endangered in the first place."
"I've warranted a search for the rest of the attackers around our villages too. More royal guards have been posted, security is much tighter. King Jeong seemed unsurprised, but not his son. This was an attack by Freyr. I saw the crest" He ambled towards her, sinking to his knees in front of her. Her breath hitched in her throat, a king kneeling to his servant? Had this man gone mad? His hand drifted towards her cheek, âYou need sleep. Youâre unwell, my General.â
"Get up, if anyone sees you kneeling before me, it will look nasty for the pair of us." He shook his head.
"I don't think I care." Encasing an arm around her neck and under her knees, he effortlessly lifted her up from the chair. "Don't say anything." he warned, walking to the other end of the room towards the large banner pinned to the wall. Moving the fabric with a few fingers, he grunted twisting the door handle. Leaning against him, her eyes fluttered to a close as he surpassed into the hidden passageway. The next morning, she was prescribed with escorting the Crown Prince of Freyr, Yunho to his carriage. They strode down to the horses in silence, wind brushed against them, left with tired sighs and quiet hums to serenade the airs.
"You are ok, aren't you General?" Nodding gratefully at his compassion, they stood outside his carriage, ready to exchange their final goodbyes. Yunho, himself, despite his incredibly tall stature, and depictable strength, held more altruism in the tip of his finger than his father held in his whole body. In comparison to King Jeong, whose violent tendencies and insatiable appetite for destruction was now the impending cause of his deteriorating health, he was renown for his charity work and advocating for peace instead of war. However, at times she could not help but think he was executing a carefully constructed façade to move the hearts of the QiÄn officials. Primarily, herself. For she sought the way that he looked at with the same level of infatuation that San had. "I'd love to get to know you General and I feel as if soon we will be obliged to work more closely together. I know you understand that our countries enmity is a product of egotism, which I hope we can soon come to a conclusion on." Her head nodded slowly, as Yunho have her one last final smile before entering his carriage.
The officials were bashful in the following meeting. A few spoke of an outbreak of a plague, San walking into the meeting late addressing the militia's concern.
"The village is under lockdown?" she questioned.
"Yes, and some villagers were on their way to Freyr too." A thought processed through her mind, vaguely. They needed something against Freyr. Something to make them pay for attacking her Kingdom.
"Nothing is immoral in war, pet." her father beamed at her as she sat in his bedroom reading through his journal. "Don't let emotions cloud your judgement, the second it does? You're as good as dead."
"That's it, Mr Seok! Stop trying to turn our daughter into a tyrant!" Her motherâs cry clamoured into her bedroom. Sharing a smile with her father she turned back to her book.
"What if we sent some of them to Freyr?"
"We can't do that, there'd be an ou-." Her cunning grin censored his reasoning.
"Can we not?" she challenged, the officials all shared a look. "Meeting adjourned." Is this what you meant Father, when you said nothing, in war, was immoral?
Nestling her head in the crook her neck, she sat on his laps staring out into the dusk. Pressing his lips to her cheeks, he breathed her in as if she was oxygen.
âThe council is talking about your marriage now, arenât they?â He hummed in agreement, sadness provoking through her. Was it possible for them to be together for eternity? Could she be both General and Queen? Perhaps she was getting ahead of herself, what if his intentions werenât marriage? What if he wanted a little bit of fun? As if he read her thoughts, he rested a hand upon her cheek to console her.
"Iâll find my way to you, if not Iâll make my way.â But just how would he make his way to her, when he could not even do as much as hold her hand for longer than a minute under the table? How would he do so, when he had to drag her into the nearest empty room to stoop her into a dulcet kiss for a mere second before they played their respective roles again? The sweetest things are forbidden. The things you desired the most are the ones you cannot have. Therefore, did she desire him more than she desired to be great and true? Was it love that she was seeking rather than power and intellect?
It was one or the other. It was San or General. How could the universe make her choose? It was like when she was asked if she preferred her mother or her father. When she was younger she always chose whoever had bowed to her wishes and pleased her the most. Her father-tending to her every need whereas her mother taught her that patience would give you more than what you desired. What was she to do now? She waited, and she became QiÄn's acclaimed military official standing next to their eminent King. What would the people think? What would the naval think? They already hated the fact that she ruled over them, but as their Queen no witty remark would slip past her.
âI can make you my wife, right here and right now.â I love you, but I can't have you. "Marry me and let me make you QiÄn's most powerful queen."
"San, do you think they like the fact that a woman has to tell them how to win a war? Do you think they'll like me even more when I become their queen? Your duty to this kingdom is to be its face, to unite, create stability between yourself and the people. Mine is to protect."
"You also have a duty to your heart. What does it want?â The booming of their incessant souls prevailed, the strings attached to them, curtailing. His tantalising aura pulled her in, yet the fact that she could not have him drew her away. It hurt that he did not belong to her, having spent the remainder of her life ruled by rationality than emotion, she knew it was better to let go of what she desired.
"It wants you. But we can't always have what we want. We have to live with that San."
"Then I won't marry. This kingdom can die with me, for all I care. After my death they can tear this palace apart. When my ancestors ask me why I broke their legacy, I'll say I fell in love."
"Don't be ridiculo-."
"I am irrevocably in love with you. My heart beats to your name, I'd abdicate-" Her hands pressed up against his lips. Tears rushing to front of her eyes.
I want you, I want you so badly.
"San, you fool.â she sobbed, her hands sliding down his face before settling on his chest.
"Can't you see? I'm a fool for you." He kissed away her tears, slowly inching towards her lips. The taste of it so sweet, so divine, something to get drunk on every night until her soul was too intoxicated to stay alive. âIâd let kingdoms fall for you.â
âWe can build this kingdom together, just not as King and Queen. Just as King and General. As it should be.â
âPlease. Think, we can make our way to each other, we can make it work. I beg.â Her hold around his neck tightened, he gripped her so tightly as if he would lose her and it seemed that any second now: he would.
âThe Freyr have surrendered their threats? They wish to organise a peace treaty?â Her voice rose by an octave with every word as the Major revealed to her the latest political news. âWhy wasnât I informed of this? This is great.â
âMainly so, King Yunho has requested to meet with you rather than His Majesty.â Once the migrants had reached the Freyr border, unbeknownst of the news of a disease- a sudden epidemic occurred across the nation, the death count inclining exponentially. Freyrâs army depleted significantly with the plague, QiÄn locking its borders- keeping the spread of infection on a tight leash. Finally, when the disease had reached the palace- King Jeong became a victim; with his prolonging amenability, his life was taken from him a new ruler acceding to the throne. âI hear he may be visiting soon, after a period of isolation- of course.â
As claimed, Yunho made his way to their kingdom with a restricted access to the palace grounds and movement to prevent the spread of disease. She caught him traipsing across the guest's quarters with white gloved hands and a face mask- to meet with San who wore the same protective dress. Entering the room, the King of Freyr was sealed behind a transparent white fabric. Joining San on the opposite side, she greeted him with a deep bow.
âYour Highness. To what do we owe the pleasure?â The treaty was signed now, the threat of war had been consumed. Was he after something more malicious?
âI was thinking what would be better way for us to create an efficacious partnership than to bind our kingdoms together in matrimony.â She shared a look with San.
âAre you talking about the Freyr Princess, Yeji?" He nodded, dubiously.
"We'll have to think about this prospect, Yunho. Our people will not take lightly to a Freyr Queen." San spoke, his careful words penetrating through Yunho's heart. His way of speaking was hypnotic enough to make his counterpart submit under his command. Through the sheer fabric, a long arm outstretched before hers dragging her body violently towards his.
âI know this was all your doing General Seok. You are a very clever woman and I respect that you will do whatever it takes to defend your country. Do not mistake my lack of maleficence for weakness.â He whispered, before releasing his rough grip on her. Pounding out of the room with his officials on his tail, her ears rung, the sonority of voices calling her name fell deaf to her ears. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, blundering out of the room her palpitating heart pushed into the furnished hallway knocking over porcelain vases.
âGeneral? General Seok!â Her head snapped up from the picturesque map pinned to wood. The naval all scrutinised her from the top of the table where she sat nursing a headache. She couldnât care how weak they thought of her now. Yunho knew. How did he know? Was there a spy within her troops she did not know? Or was he sharper than she had forseen? The latter brimmed her heart with solicitude.
âGo on, Major Kang. Tell me, I didnât see that coming. Tell me that I have driven this country into the ground with my wit.â Her noxious tone reached out to them through gritted teeth. For the first time in her life, there was an odd sense of sympathy in the room that wasnât foreseen before.
âGeneral Geon cried in this very room when he lost his precious battalion to the Freyr in the Valley. In front of us all. We do not care if you ripped your hair out in front of us, we care that you move us forward.â Swallowing the lump in her throat, battling the tears that threatened to leach out of her eyes, her head oscillated. âItâs ok to not know what to do, General.â
âI canât have the Freyr Princess in this kingdom."
âThen QiÄn will be sunken under the sea.â San spoke, a mutter of agreement fulfilled the War Room.
âIf we have to shed blood, letâs do it now. Their troops have minimised, weâve blocked all ways in, theyâre still suffering from a chronic disease. If they declare a war, they wonât win.â
âHe doesnât have to declare war now. He can declare war in ten, fifteen, twenty years time. Will we win then?â San argued. Under their heated gaze, the officials left the room leaving their General alone to rally with the King.
"I can't and won't stand here and watch another woman take my place in your heart." Tears pooled at the bay of her eyes. He drew closer to her, pulling her into his chest.
"I'm afraid you have to."
"Sannie, my love. Please." she begged, weakly. He turned his head away. "You can't do this to me." A painful sob escaped from her lips as she sunk to the floor, dragging San down with her. Her cry weakened him, breaking down the exterior of a powerful King that had been fabricated from his coronation.
"If I were to hold you in my arms, in front of them all, that would be all the more reason to let you go. You are my heart and my soul. You are everything that keeps my body moving. But to love you is a sin that would condemn me to eternal damnation."
âI would lose a thousand wars, willingly, if it meant I could have you." she choked out. His lips fell into a pout, as his own tears forged from the ardent fires of his love.
âAnything to win a war, right?â Their heads pressed together, pearly tears staining her supple flesh. âYou will always be my queen.â With a final kiss pressed to her forehead, he got up escaping through the door. Her heart entwined between his fingers, blood dripping down the palace walls as they were mercilessly parted by fate.

A/N-This one is especially indulgent for me, I fall more in love with this man every time I write him so I allowed myself the leeway to express my fantasies. I hope you all enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing!
Wandering aimlessly through the fantasy section, you take the time here to admire the intricate bindings of the novels. Fantasy was such a broad genre and you wanted to savor the section while you had the time. Breathing in slowly and letting out a long breath, you ready yourself for the next trial.
Once you've let yourself linger long enough, you decide to pull on one of the attached ladders. You slide it over, then climb as high as you can. In the other sections so far, you'd just picked randomly. But you wanted to see if something interesting lie beyond your natural reach.
Sliding out a blue and gold novel, you admire the graceful flowing script upon it. It's in a language you can't read but as you run your hand over the cover, a sense of happiness fills you. Nodding, you open the pages.
Softly singing the last line of the verse you'd created just for him, you can't help but bask in the beauty of your Prince. His beautiful bronze eyes shine with love for you as he sings out his verse to you in his rich, deep voice.
Finalizing the ceremony by slipping a shimmering ring onto your finger with his mark on it, Yeosang flutters his shimmering wings and you return the gesture as he takes your hands in his. You both rise up into the canopy of trees, letting the glimmering dust produced rain down in celebration upon your people. The sparkle from the light showering down illuminates the deep night around you.
Singing voices bless your union as he swirls you around in a graceful dance. Then he takes you in his arms and whisks you away above the canopy, finally able to join him in his treetop residence.
Landing upon the large branch that leads into what is now your bedchamber, he spins you around to place a kiss upon your forehead.
"Finally, my love. We are one for eternity." his voice murmurs against you, his timbre low. Excitement flutters within your stomach as his arms wrap around your waist, pulling you close. You can feel your wings betray you, trembling already at what is to come.
His fingers slip into your hair, cradling your head as he leans back to look down at you. "Don't be nervous, my love." he hums, his lips parting as he leans in to meet yours. Tentative at first, you gradually lean into him, your hand reaching up to cup his cheek. He sighs against your mouth, his tongue gently skimming your bottom lip.
You open to him, your own tongue seeking his. At this, he lets out a groan, his head tilting to kiss you even deeper as he runs his strong fingers down your bare back, to where your wings protrude. You sigh softly as he traces designs upon your skin around them.
You can't help but reach up to tug at his top, unfastening the shoulder clip and letting it fall to the floor. Your breath catches at the site of him bare chested in front of you, your hands traveling up his muscular body to his shoulders, eyeing every inch of bare skin.
The rumble of his low laugh has you blushing and biting your lip. "No need to be shy, my Princess. Take as long as you desire to look upon me. It pleases me to have your admiring eyes gaze at me so lovingly."
You let your eyes flick up to take in his beautiful face, his blonde locks falling into his eyes. You reach up to brush a strand back and smile coyly at him.
"Then allow me to bask in your gaze as well." you say as you step back, reaching behind to you release the one clasp holding your beaded wedding gown on. It falls to the floor with a musical tinkling and you stand before him as you extend your wings fully, your form shimmering in the moonlight.
His wings tremble as he takes in your figure, slowly raking his gleaming eyes over you. The mixture of delight, pride and lust at his reaction has your wings reacting as well, quivering to the point of lifting you off the ground slightly.
He laughs softly at your response to him and you can't help but blush shyly. His smile alone has your heart bursting as he flits over to you, taking you in his arms once more. He spins you both around and upward with the strength of his wings and you reach between your bodies to untie his loose trousers, the remainder of his clothing.
As you release them, he kicks them off, letting them flutter away into the night. You giggle as he pulls you against his nakedness, the two of you hovering over the trees as he embraces you. "My Prince." you whisper softly as he tastes your lips once more.
His mouth trails down to your neck, then your collarbone as his arm holds you tightly against him. His naked form is skin to skin with yours, his rigid length pressing against the softness of your tummy.
"Yeosang..." you sigh and open your eyes to take in the night sky full of stars as his large hand cups your bottom. He slowly lowers you both as you instinctively lift your leg to wrap around his hip. At your movement, his breath quickens and he moans eagerly.
"Stay with me forever..." he breathes out, his arm tightening around you. "Yes..." you respond as he lands, keeping you firmly in his grip. Letting your other leg wrap around his waist, you let your hand slide between the two of you. His hot breath skims over the skin of your breast, his hand cupping underneath to knead at it.
The firm flesh of his thickness in your palm twitches when you finally stroke him, slowly sliding your delicate fingers over the tip where he leaks his need for you. Your leg rubs down the back of his thigh, a soft mewling escaping your throat as he brushes his lips over your sensitive nipple. You stroke just his cockhead as he looks up at you, his intense eyes glazed with desire.
You can't help but choke back a cry when his mouth latches onto your nipple, his tongue tracing the taut peak as he sucks gently. His eyes watch you intently as small mewling sounds escape your lips, yet you continue to roll your wrist, coercing a low humming from him as you pump his length.
"Make me yours, my Prince." you demand, your fingers delving into his hair. Tugging gently as he flits his wings, you guide him to your eager opening. He gently flies you both to the edge of the veranda to alight upon a cushioned chaise. He settles upon it with you in his lap as you rub his tip against your slickness.
Far too eager to allow any more of your playful teasing, he grips your hips and lifts himself into you. Your wings tremble as he stretches you, his eyes never leaving your face. "Yeosang~~" you cry out as he presses you down onto him, completely sheathed within as your hips start to move.
You return his intense stare as you roll your hips, grinding down against him. Gripping his shoulder, you rise up just to sink back down on him as he grasps your buttocks, spreading you wider so he can sink deeper into you. Your moans and cries blend together into a sweet melody, his low tone vibrating through your being as he guides you gently upon him at first.
Then the tempo gains momentum, his breath and sighs quickening to match yours. Running your hand from his shoulder down his back, you run your fingers against the delicate spot where his wings extend from his back muscles. His eyes darken as he chokes on a moan, his hands tightening to dig into your delicate flesh.
"My Princess..." he cries out shakily as you slide your fingers along the thick muscle that connects to his silken wings. The vibrant colors of his radiant wings pulse as you trace the pattern of his veins shining through the gossamer silkiness.
"Mine...my Princess....my forever....please..." he's crying out, then he is standing up with you still wrapped around him, his strong fingers grasping your wing muscles in return possessively. The sensation of his strong grip mixed with the meaning of the gesture has you stuttering out incoherent syllables.
You can feel your wings begin to agitate on their own, mimicking the tremble of his. "Prince...my Prince ....." is all you can manage as he manages to maneuver you to one of the pillars to press you against it.
Careful to not hurt your wings, he presses his hand to the sensitive skin where your wings meet and backs you into the structure. You grip his wings as greedily as he did yours, holding on to him tightly as he thrusts up into you.
His cries and moans are so broken as he starts to plunge zealously into your clenching sex, as he starts to speak as brokenly as you are. "Name~~ say...... please.....my name~~" he is whimpering as your body begins to quake. You begin to clamp around him as you feel the tightness of your abdomen threaten to snap. You stroke his powerful wings muscles as you finally begin to cry out his name.
"Yeosa- Yeos...sssaang..." your voice quivers as he growls out yours in turn. "Mine...for..ee.v.err." he continues to repeat, until he seizes against you. His mouth clamps onto yours to swallow your cries as you finally crest to your peak, flooding around him as he empties his seed into your womb.
The flare of his wings as they tremble with his climax lights up the entire area, pulsing in time with yours. You can feel the glimmering dust they produce settling on your dewy skin as you open your eyes to take it all in. He pulls back from your mouth to lean back slightly, looking down between you where you are joined. He pulls back just to thrust into you again, admiring the glistening fluid from you both trickling out of you.
"Beautiful...so beautiful..." he whispers, his eyes coming back up to meet yours. They shine golden in the early morning sunrise, the orange, yellow and red glow washing over the both of you. "Yes...you are.." you whisper back to him, cupping his face lovingly. You pull close to him again as he carries you gently to the bed in the middle of the veranda.
Settling down with you in his lap once more, he pulls you both onto the soft silken bedding. He seems unwilling to part from you but he finally slips out, adjusting both of your bodies so you are lying side by side, face to face. Pulling you close once more, he gently kisses you, taking his time.
You cradle his perfect face in your hands and kiss his cheeks. Drawing back at the dampness, you look at him with a frown. "My Prince?" you ask, worried. He takes your hand in his and kisses your palm.
"If I asked you to stay forever, would you?" he inquires softly, his eyes pleading. "Of course, Yeosang...I..." he sighs again and kisses the ring he had placed on your finger the evening before.
"I wish it were so. Let us just enjoy this morning together." he whispers, taking your mouth once more.
The rest of the morning is a haze as he takes you twice more, seemingly insatiable. When you are finally completely exhausted and on the verge of sleep, he slips from the bed. Crying softly at his absence, he coos at you softly to wait, then he's sitting beside you on the edge of the bed.
He is cradling a small silver box, his mark upon the lid. "Our time together is the most wonderful thing I've ever experienced. I wish you could remain here with me, for eternity." he says, once more placing a kiss upon your lips.
Then he slips the box into your hand, turning away from you. "My love?" you ask, then glance down at it. Opening it slowly, there lies a key upon the silken fabric.
You breath catches as realization hits you and you finally remember why you are here. Your heart clenches at the truth of what he'd been saying. You go to reach for it, then stop yourself.
"Yeosang...?" you whisper, your fingers tracing his wing pattern once more. He gasps and spins around, his eyes large at your touch. "My Princess?" he says, concerned.
You close the box, and set it to the side. His face flicks through a range of emotions as you reach for him, sitting up. You slip into his lap once more, brushing his hair back from his beautiful face.
"One more day together wouldn't hurt anything, would it?" you murmur against his lips. You barely get the words out before he is growling out your name, a choked cry of happiness escaping his throat.
And after you both have worn each other out over and over, through the day into the next night, you wait until his eyelids flutter shut to kiss them one last time.
Taking in the sunrise one more time, you open the box and allow yourself one small tear shed for a fantasy you have to leave behind before you take the key.
You rematerialize into the dim stacks. This time, you wipe your cheek as you breathe out slowly. You look down at your hand where a small mark is, a shadow of the ring he'd given you. You take some time with your thoughts as you feel regret wash over you. It takes you a few moments cradling the key he'd given you to finally retire into the box.
Rubbing the ache in your chest, you move on once more, this time to your last trial.

back to masterlist?
The royalties of Mist were leaving.
For the entire two weeks that they have been here, you refused to talk to, or even look at Kim Hongjoong. The Prince of Mist kept to his promise and kept a distance away from you, but even though he did, you could always feel his possessive gaze on you.Â
âGoodbye, little Y/n.â The Queen of Mist says fondly, patting you on the head as Beomgyu, at the back, whines about not being her favourite anymore. Your parents had already bade them farewell prior to this. You said your goodbyes politely, sliding behind Yeonjun smoothly once you were done.Â
You could feel Hongjoong staring at you.
You look up to the carriage. Hongjoong was indeed staring at you. As your gaze met each otherâs, a smug smirk tugged at the corner of Hongjoongâs lips. His lips parted and closed, words soundlessly coming out from his mouth. You glared at him from behind Yeonjun, and he smirked again, disappearing from the carriage window.Â
âY/n, are you okay?â A warm hand was placed on your shoulder. Yeonjun looked at you in concern, and your anger dissipated. He must have felt the negativity radiating from you. You shook your head and gathered up a bright smile. âI'm fine, Brother.â
You're not. The Queen of Mist boarded the carriage, and you and your brothers stood at the gate, watching them leave. As the carriage disappeared into the distance, what Hongjoong said replayed in your mind.
âSee you soon, my Star.â
You rushed to your room, dismissing all the maids and servants. You headed straight towards your desk, taking out a piece of parchment and a feathered quill.Â
See you soon? You rolled your eyes. Hongjoongâs threat reminded you of something. You quickly scribbled down the names of the important characters and events of Utopia on the parchment, forming a complicated web upon the paper.
Utopiaâs story starts like this: A normal girl Lee Jiwon from a common family had transmigrated into the game after a car accident. She then became the youngest daughter of a fallen noble family in the kingdom of Mist. She then attended the power discovering ceremony when she was thirteen years old, and discovered that she has the power of light and healing - a power only the saintness have. She was then taken to the Temple, where she met Jeong Yunho for the first time. He was the first love interest that the players of Utopia came across.
You drew a line from Yunhoâs name to Jiwon, and then you linked both of them to the temple. While at the temple, she also met Kang Yeosang, son of the Southern Duke of Mist. The two met each other at the temple while Jiwon was tending to an injured animal she discovered in the bushes. Yeosang then slowly fell in love with her because of how gentle and kind she was, and so did Yunho. Yunho and Yeosang will then proceed to secretly vye for Jiwonâs affection, but she would be oblivious to it.
You drew a line from Yeosang to the Temple and back to Jiwon.Â
After spending three years of studying in the Temple, Jiwon will enrol into the Magic Academy of Utopia, becoming a student.Â
The Magic Academy is a prestigious school attended by royalties and the gifted with magic from all kingdoms. It is built on neutral land, and the closer kingdoms around it are Mist, Miroh and Klaxon It is protected by a mysterious force of power.Â
In the Academy, Jiwon will then gain the attention of Hongjoong, the crown prince of Mist, because of her status. Hongjoong sent Seonghwa to approach the soon-to-be saintness on his behalf, and the attendant fell in love with her instead. Intrigued by this, Hongjoong decided to approach Jiwon himself.
You drew two more lines, linking Hongjoong, Seonghwa and Jiwon together. Your quill hovered above your name.Â
You, the villainess Y/n, enters the plot here. You were invited to an event in Mist, and was soon enrolled into the academy. Choi San, the son of the war general of Mist, was picked as your guard. Through him you met Hongjoongâs younger brother, Jung Wooyoung. Through the event, you had fallen in love with Kim Hongjoong, and was jealous of Lee Jiwon. Wooyoung was the one who encouraged you to pick on Jiwon, roping in San to assist you, only to then expose you in front of everyone, resulting in your imprisonment. .
A war between Eternity and Mist began, and you watched your family die before you, before Hongjoong took your head off himself.
You shivered, goosebumps rising across your skin as you drew lines between Wooyoung, San and yourself, before linking your brothers to San.
Although you couldnât remember what happened next, you knew that Beomgyu was the only person left alive, and was crowned the ruler of Eternity. You stared at his name, before giving out a sigh in frustration.Â
Your gaze turned to the two more unlinked names: Song Mingi and Choi Jongho.Â
Mingi is the childhood best friend of Yunho. He had become a love interest after Y/nâs death as he had enrolled in the academy after her event. Jongho, however, was the most mysterious character.Â
You drew a line from Jonghoâs name to another name: âMagic Towerâ.Â
The Magic Tower is almost the same as the Magic Academy. However, its learning environment was more harsh and dangerous. Students of the Magic Tower are free to battle and kill each other to take places.
Beomgyu attends the Magic Tower due to his powers.Â
You bit your lower lip in frustration. You seemed to have found a key, but you have no idea which lock it belongs to.Â
Carefully, you linked Beomgyu to the Magic Tower, and then to Jongho.Â
Suddenly, a thought struck you. What if, instead of enrolling into the Magic Academy, you enrol into the Magic Tower?
Besides, youâll enter the tower one year earlier than him, which means that you do not have to face him. You could just avoid him at the tower and stay with Beomgyu. Since most of the plot happens in the Magic Academy, you can avoid them by going to the Magic Tower.Â
Right?
Seoul Hospital.Â
Urgent footsteps echoed off the walls of the cold corridors of the hospital. Kang Taehyun ran as fast as his legs could carry him, apologising profusely to the people he bumped into along his way. His eyes flickered towards the signs in front of the wards, counting them.Â
06âŠ07âŠ08!
Taehyun stopped abruptly, pushing the door of the hospital ward wide open. Inside, a blonde figure stood up at the sight of him, looking relieved. âTaehyun oppaâŠâ
âHowâs Y/n?â Taehyun rushed forwards to the unmoving girl lying on the hospital bed. âWhat did the doctor say?â
Hiyyih shook her head. She seemed tired, her lips dry and devoid of their usual rosy colour as she sat back down. âThey say that they have no idea what happened to her⊠She just had a shock and slipped into a coma.âÂ
âSo sheâs okay?â Taehyunâs heart broke at the sight of his little sister on the hospital bed. Hiyyih didnât answer that, but from her tired expression, Taehyun could only assume the best. âWhereâs Kai?â
Hiyyihâs eyes glinted at the mention of her older brother. âHe went to check with the doctor about Y/n. Iâve been taking care of her ever since I found her.â
âThank you.â Taehyun said gratefully. Now that heâs looking directly at Hiyyih, he noticed that she looked terrible - there were bags under her eyes and her skin was paler than usual. She waved her hand, cracking a small smile. âDonât, we have known each other for years now. Besides, Y/nâs my roommate.â
âStill, Iâm glad you discovered her.â Taehyun insisted.Â
The door opened. Kai stepped in, his eyes lighting up at the sight of Taehyun. âYouâre here!â Kai exclaimed, somewhat looking like his younger sister. There were similar bags under his eyes, and Taehyun couldnât help but feel even more moved. âYeah, I rushed here as soon as the plane landed.â
âSince youâre here, oppa, Iâll go and take a rest first.â Hiyyih yawned, grabbing her sweater. Kai and Taehyun nodded, as the blonde girl left the ward.Â
âThe doctors say that Y/nâs coma was sudden with no reason.â Kai said, sitting down on the couch where his younger sister had previously rested. âThere was no known cause, and Hiyyih said that Y/n doesnât have any drinking or smoking habits. They sent her down for the CT scan and there was nothing wrong.â
âSo she slipped into a coma without knowing why?â Taehyun carefully removed a strand of hair on his sisterâs face. âI shouldnât have flown to JapanâŠâ
Kai paused. He made a face, one that he would wear when he is in a dilemma. Taehyun saw it, and he said, âIs there anything else I should know?â
Kai fiddled with his thumbs. âWell, I know it's an inappropriate time for me to say this, especially when Y/n is lying here, but the VR program for Utopia has a problem.âÂ
Taehyun and Kai have been best friends since young, having known each other when both of them were in diapers. Two years ago, Kai had developed an otome game - a present for his younger sister Hiyyih - and it became so popular that Kai began to gain profit from it. Taehyun was his first investor and the biggest shareholder of his little gaming company, and since then they have been working together.Â
Recently, Kai had come up with the idea of inducing VR - Virtual Reality - to the game, where players of Utopia can have a more surreal gaming experience. Taehyun had flown to Japan to attend a techshow to know more about it, before he received the call about Y/n.Â
âThatâs not the only problem,â Kai added carefully, watching the frown deepen on Taehyunâs face. âThis might sound crazy, but yesterday, when I was trying out the VR version, there was something⊠weird.â
âWhat do you mean, âweirdâ?â Taehyun repeated. Kai breathed in deeply.Â
âYou remember the beta version of the villainess route, the one we accidentally released but called back?âÂ
âYes.â Taehyun remembered, vividly. Kai was spamming his phone with texts and panicking while the rest of his employees tried their best to salvage the situation. Luckily, only one user was able to update the game fully, and they have been trying to contact that player. âItâs about Player 1117, right? Have you found them?âÂ
âNo.â Kai shook his head. âBut, the thing is, while I was loading the game up to the beta version in the studio, there were some⊠really weird changes.â
Taehyun raised a brow. âWhat changes?â
âRemember Y/n, like, the villainess of the game?âÂ
Taehyun almost laughed at that. Yes, he remembered suggesting the name to Kai because he and Y/n had a little squabble, and Taehyun was feeling petty at that time. âYeah, what about her?â
âShe was originally supposed to attend the Magic Academy, right?â Kai questioned, taking out his own phone and tapping away. He then showed the screen to Taehyun. âI was just trying to load the game back, but I just kept failing. When I was going through the cutscene of Y/nâs backstory, it said that she had a big quarrel with her brother about attending the Magic Tower instead of the Magic Academy, so she ran away and left Eternity on her own.â
âHow did that happen?â Taehyun grabbed Kaiâs phone. On the screen, a picture of a dark haired girl disguised as a young male teenager sitting at an inn, listening to the conversations others were having. Taehyun had not remembered any of their artists showing a storyboard like that in any of their team meetings.Â
âThatâs not the only weird part.â Kai said, taking his phone back. âRemember the villainess was supposed to be powerless?â He paused, waiting for Taehyun to react. âWell, it is said that she developed an ability.â
âWhat is it?â
âShe can turn into an animal at will. More precisely, she can turn into an owl.â

Love & War
"Everything is fair in love and war"
CH-1
As Seonghwa emerged from the assembly hall, the administrative minister of the king, Jung Wooyoung, greeted him with a respectful nod. "Congratulations, Hyung," Wooyoung offered warmly.
"Thank you, Wooyoung," Seonghwa replied with a nod of acknowledgment.
"The king has requested me to escort you to your palace," Wooyoung continued, his tone respectful yet tinged with an air of formality. Seonghwa simply nodded in response, his mind already occupied with thoughts of the challenges and responsibilities that lay ahead.
As they exited the palace, two ornate palanquins awaited them, resplendent in hues of gold and red. Seonghwa settled into one, his thoughts momentarily diverted by the memory of the finance minister's envious glare. He knew well the source of the man's resentmentâhis own meteoric rise to prominence at a young age, culminating in his appointment as the general of Korea's most formidable army.
Lost in contemplation, Seonghwa hardly noticed the journey as the palanquins traversed the bustling streets, eventually arriving at the Gladiolus Palace. Stepping out onto the marble courtyard, Seonghwa was instantly engulfed by an aura of opulence and grandeur that seemed to permeate every corner of the magnificent estate.
Towering pillars, adorned with intricate carvings, reached towards the heavens, casting graceful shadows across the courtyard. The gentle melody of cascading fountains filled the air, their crystalline waters shimmering in the sunlight, adding to the palace's ethereal beauty.
In that moment, Seonghwa couldn't help but feel a surge of pride and determination, knowing that this palace, now his own, would serve as a symbol of his achievements and the king's trust. Yet, beneath the surface of his elation, he remained keenly aware of the challenges and adversaries that awaited him in the corridors of power. Gazing around in awe, Seonghwa found himself captivated by the unparalleled beauty that enveloped him. The grandeur of the palace was nothing short of breathtaking. Whispers lingered in the air, hinting at the palace's storied pastâa legacy intertwined with the illustrious history of Goguryeo. Legends spoke of its origins, tracing its lineage back to the queen of the realm's inaugural monarch. However, following her exile, the palace had been sanctified, designated solely for those who had earned the king's utmost trust and reverence.
As he walked through the corridors, the weight of his title and responsibilities settled upon his shoulders. The Gladiolus Palace would now be his home, a symbol of his elevated status and the king's favor. But amidst the splendor, Seonghwa couldn't shake the lingering sense of uneaseâthe knowledge that envy and resentment lurked in the shadows, waiting to test his resolve and ambition.
"You are nothing but worthless, your very existence is futile!" Y/N endured the scathing verbal assault from her aunt, the queen of Baekje, her words laced with disdain.
Before Y/N could even muster a response, she felt the sting of a hunter's strike from the crown prince of the kingdom, Yoon Taehyun. Each blow intensified, accompanied by harsh admonishments, leaving Y/N pleading for mercy, her cries falling on deaf ears.
As Y/N endured the cruel punishment, her younger brother, Jisung, stood resolute outside the store room, determined to rescue his sister from her tormentors. With a heavy heart, he retreated to his quarters, penning a letter to his friend, Kang Yeosang, a military strategist in the Goguryeo empire, outlining their plan for Y/N's escape.
"Dear Hyung,
I trust this letter finds you well. The time has come to set our plan in motion. I implore you to find a suitable suitor for my sister, one who will treat her with the kindness and respect she deserves. I will endeavor to free her from her captivity by the 29th of this month.
Regards,
Prince Jisung of Baekje"
Jisung entrusted the letter to his messenger with a sense of urgency, urging him to expedite its delivery to Yeosang without delay. The messenger embarked on his journey, traversing the vast expanse between the kingdoms until he reached the majestic capital city of Onyeosanseong within three days' time. Upon his arrival, he diligently inquired and navigated through the bustling corridors of the palace until he finally located Yeosang in his office chambers.
With a solemn bow, Yeosang received the letter and swiftly perused its contents, his expression grave as he absorbed the weight of its message. After confirming its authenticity, Yeosang dispatched the messenger back to Jisung with a firm nod of assurance.
With the groundwork laid, Yeosang wasted no time in seeking an audience with the king, determined to set their plan into motion. Bowed respectfully before the monarch, Yeosang broached the sensitive subject at hand, his words measured yet impassioned.
"My lord, there is a matter of utmost importance that requires your attention," Yeosang began, his voice resonating with a sense of urgency.
The king, intrigued, granted his permission with a nod of approval, signaling for Yeosang to continue.
"This may come as a surprise, but I share a longstanding friendship with Prince Jisung of Baekje. We were childhood companions during his time in our kingdom, and he recently confided in me regarding a troubling discovery," Yeosang explained, his tone tinged with solemnity as he relayed the distressing revelation.
He recounted the grim tale of Princess Y/N's harrowing ordeal, detailing her years of unspeakable suffering at the hands of the Baekje monarchy. As he spoke, the gravity of the situation hung heavy in the air, compelling the king to listen intently, his expression a mixture of shock and concern.
Moved by the plight of his niece, the king's resolve solidified, his determination to rescue her from her torment unwavering. Thus, with the foundation laid and the king's support secured, their daring plan to liberate Princess Y/N from her captors began to take shape.
"We have devised a plan, My lord," Yeosang announced with conviction, his voice steady and resolute.
"What is it?" the king inquired, his interest piqued by Yeosang's determined demeanor.
"We believe that securing a marriage for her within our kingdom may offer Princess Y/N a chance at salvation," Yeosang explained, his words measured yet infused with empathy.
"But wouldn't arranging a marriage proposal pose a significant risk, given her precarious situation?" the king interjected, his brow furrowing with concern.
"That is precisely why we propose to clandestinely extricate her from Baekje and solemnize the marriage within the confines of Goguryeo," Yeosang countered, his gaze unwavering as he outlined the intricacies of their plan.
The king considered Yeosang's proposal thoughtfully, recognizing the gravity of the situation. "You have my permission," he declared finally, his voice carrying the weight of authority.
"Do you have a candidate in mind?" the king inquired, his gaze fixed intently on Yeosang.
"General Park Seonghwa, my lord," Yeosang revealed without hesitation, his tone reflecting his unwavering confidence in the choice.
The king's expression softened at the mention of Seonghwa's name, a flicker of paternal affection crossing his features. "I hold General Seonghwa in high regard, but to marry him to a woman who has endured such suffering... I am uncertain if it is the right course of action," he confessed, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Yeosang met the king's gaze with unwavering resolve. "My lord, General Seonghwa's reputation may precede him as a man of formidable demeanor, known for his stern and unwavering nature on the battlefield. However, beneath this seemingly cold exterior lies a heart capable of profound compassion and understanding," Yeosang asserted, his tone resolute yet earnest. "While he may have earned a reputation for his strict discipline and ruthless tactics in warfare, his loyalty and sense of duty are unparalleled. It is this very sense of duty that makes him an ideal candidate to safeguard Princess Y/N's well-being," he continued, emphasizing the depth of character hidden beneath the general's imposing facade.
"Very well, give me tomorrow's time to have an audience with him," the king remarked, his tone carrying a weight of authority and contemplation.

A week had passed since Y/n began her role as the protector of the princes, and with each day, the castle had become a second home to her. The towering stone walls echoed with laughter and camaraderie, but beneath the surface of daily life lay a constant tensionâ a feeling she couldnât shake. It nestled deep in her gut, a warning that whispered of impending danger. She had learned long ago to trust her instincts; they had kept her alive through countless encounters, and this time would be no different.
Y/n shadowed the princes through their daily duties, each one more vibrant and charismatic than the last. Hongjoong, with his admirable confidence, led with a charisma that drew people to him. Seonghwa was the more calm and calculating one, his sharp mind always considering the implications of their actions. Yunho was the gentle mediator, while Yeosang and San brought energy and lightheartedness to the group. Mingi and Wooyoung's banter was infectious, and Jongho remained the steady protector of his brothers.
But as they navigated their royal obligations, Y/n couldnât help but feel like everything had been going too smooth. The princes, unaware of her lurking anxiousness, engaged in friendly competitions and playful debates, but she remained vigilant, her eyes scanning the surroundings, always alert for signs of trouble.
The day passed in a blur of meetings and laughter, but Y/nâs unease grew as night descended. After dinner, she returned to her quarters, pouring over plans to fortify the palaceâs defenses. She studied the maps, noting the weak points in the castleâs layoutâthose areas where shadows lingered too long, where escape routes were not clearly marked.Â
The library would be a vital place to secure; it was a hub of knowledge and strategy. She jotted down ideas, her mind racing as she considered various threats. Just as she finalized her notes, a distant commotion broke the serene atmosphere of the castle.
Her heart dropped. The feeling in her gut intensified, urging her to act. Y/n grabbed her dagger, not wasting time strapping it to her side and rushing out of her room, her senses heightened and her heart racing with adrenaline. Her grip on the hilt of her blade turned her knuckles white.
As Y/n sprinted through the dimly lit hallways, she could hear the muffled sounds of laughter and discussion from the library. The princes had chosen to stay up late, discussing matters of the castle and how their day had gone.
Bursting into the library, Y/n was met with an unexpected sightâ Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho were gathered around a table piled high with books, Mingi and Wooyoung were on the floor, seemingly tussling with each other as San and Yunho cheered them on as the other four watched, well except Yeosang who had his nose in a book. The atmosphere shifted instantly as Y/nâs arrival interrupted their fun.
âIs everything alright? I heard a commotion.â she demanded, her voice sharp and authoritative as she stalked closer, vigilantly checking the library, startling the princes who had just been messing around with each other. No danger in sight.
Seonghwa glanced up, confusion clouding his features. âWe were just talking and messing around, Viper. Weââ
But before he could finish, the air in the room shifted, a chilling presence that sent shivers down Y/nâs spine. A sudden, loud crash echoed through the library, and the heavy wooden doors burst open, revealing a group of masked assailants, each one brandishing weapons that gleamed menacingly in the flickering candlelight. It seemed that there were around ten of them, but Y/n couldnât be sure if there were anymore that were waiting to show themselves and attack.
âGet down!â Y/n shouted, instinctively pushing Seonghwa and the others to the floor as she drew her dagger, her heart pounding in her chest.
The attack was swift and brutal. The intruders moved like shadows, their faces obscured, their intentions clear. Y/n fought against the rising tide of panic, focusing on the immediate danger before her.Â
With one powerful thrust, she plunged her dagger into the chest of the nearest attacker, the blade slicing through flesh with a sickening squelch. He fell to the ground, eyes wide in shock, as she spun to face another assailant.Â
âStay close!â Y/n shouted to the princes, her voice cutting through the chaos. âWe need to regroup!â Y/n didnât want them to get involved in the fight, however she was far too outnumbered to be able to take them all on by herself. She would have to trust the small bits and pieces she taught them during training would stick and that theyâd use it.
The room erupted in chaos as the princes scrambled to their feet, instinctively grabbing nearby objects to defend themselves. Mingi and Wooyoung teamed up, their playful banter from earlier replaced by a fierce determination to protect their brothers. They fought with raw energy, dodging strikes and countering with their own, but the masked attackers were relentless.
Y/n ducked beneath a swinging sword, narrowly avoiding a blow aimed at her head. She retaliated with a swift kick to the manâs stomach, sending the attacker stumbling backward. Just as she gained the upper hand, another assailant lunged at her from the side, a wicked knife glinting in the dim light.
In a split second, she reacted, disarming him with a fluid motion and driving her dagger into his side, twisting the blade as blood poured out onto her hand and the library floor, spraying her clothes with the thick crimson. The man gasped, a sound that echoed in the library before he collapsed to the floor, lifeless.
Y/n fought her way toward the princes, her heart racing as she checked on each of them. Seonghwa was holding his own against two attackers, his movements precise and calculated. Yunho struggled to fend off another assailant who was much bulkier than him, and Y/n rushed to his side, dispatching the enemy with a swift slice of her dagger across his neck from behind, the blood that rushed from the wound soaking Yunhoâs clothes. Y/n would have felt bad about ruining his clothes if she werenât moving onto her next target.
âStay together!â she urged, glancing over her shoulder to see San and Yeosang battling their own attackers.Â
With her instincts guiding her, Y/n moved fluidly through the chaos, dispatching attackers one by one. She felt a surge of adrenaline, a primal instinct to protect those whose lives she had been charged with. Each life she took felt justified in the heat of the moment, but a part of her grimaced at the violence. Despite all the years of bloodshed she had caused, every drop she had spilled, she had never truly delighted in the feeling of the red liquid.
As she turned to assist Hongjoong, she saw him pinned against a wall by two attackers. Immediate anger and worry surged through her as she charged forward, a pang of fear shooting through her chest,Y/n tackled one of the men to the ground, taking down the assailant as she plunged her dagger into his skull. Hongjoongâs eyes met hers, gratitude mingling within them as well as the fear of the situation.
âThank you!â he called out, determination and gratefulness etched across his features.
âKeep fighting, donât thank me yet!â she shouted back, her voice firm. The fight still was not over.
The battle raged on, each moment stretching into what felt like an eternity. The library was filled with the sounds of clashing metal and grunts of effort, the scent of blood mingling with the musty aroma of old books, the smell nearly made her want to throw up just as much as the thought of a place she considered a sanctuary being tainted by the violence did. Y/n felt her muscles burning as she ducked, rolled, and struck, each movement honed by years of training and experience.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her sideâ a dagger had sliced through her side and she could feel blood soak through the fabric and trail down her side. She gritted her teeth, refusing to allow the pain to distract her. The world around her became a blur of motion, and she continued to fight, her dagger a flash of silver against the dark fabric of the attackersâ cloaks.
Jongho was grappling with one of the attackers, his strength evident as he wrestled for control. Y/n moved in to help, delivering a swift kick that sent the assailant crashing into the shelves, books tumbling down like rain. The intruder groaned, incapacitated. She left Jongho to deal with him.
âWatch your back!â Y/n shouted, keeping her gaze scanning the room.Â
In the midst of all the chaos, she spotted Seonghwa fighting fiercely, his eyes narrowed with focus. Just then, another attacker lunged at him from behind, and Y/nâs instincts flared. She sprinted toward him, adrenaline surging through her veins as she lunged forward and into action.
âYour Highness!â she cried out, desperation lacing her voice as she pulled his attention towards her.
With a swift motion, she threw her dagger, the blade spinning through the air and embedding itself in the assailantâs chest, causing him to stumble back, dropping his weapon. He fell to the ground, lifeless, just as Y/n reached Seonghwa.
âAre you alright?â she panted, her heart racing.
Seonghwa nodded, but the fear in his eyes was palpable. âIâ I think so. But we need to get everyone out of here!â
With renewed determination, Y/n and the princes fought together, each movement synchronized as they formed a protective circle around one another. The attackers began to fall, one by one, but the fight was far from over.
âWhere are the guards?â Hongjoong shouted, frustration lacing his voice as he parried a blow.
âMost likely trying to reach us,â Y/n replied, her voice steady despite the chaos. âWe need to hold on until they arrive.â
Just as hope began to flicker, a loud crash echoed from the entrance of the library. A group of guards burst in, weapons drawn, their presence a welcome sight.Â
âProtect the princes!â Captain Chan barked, moving with a purpose as he now worked to ensure the princesâ safety as well.
Y/n felt a surge of relief as the guards joined the fight, quickly dispatching the remaining attackers. But as the dust began to settle, she couldnât shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.Â
One of the masked assailants, larger than the rest, stepped forward. He was unlike the othersâ more composed, more menacing. His eyes glinted with a cold malice, and he wielded a sword with deadly precision.
âStep aside, boys,â he taunted, his voice low and dripping with menace. âLet me show you how a real fighter handles this.â
Y/n felt a chill wash over her as she locked eyes with the leader of the attackers. This man was not just a common criminal; he was a threat that demanded her full attention.Â
âWeâll take you together!â Mingi shouted, positioning himself alongside Y/n and the princes, ready for a fight.
âNo,ïżœïżœïżœ Y/n interjected, her voice firm. âThis oneâs mine.â
âAre you sure?â Seonghwa asked, concern flashing across his face.
âI can handle him,â she assured, her eyes never leaving the leader, she couldnât risk any of the princes getting hurt.Â
With that, Y/n stepped forward, her dagger gripped tightly in her hand. The leader smirked, a challenge igniting in his eyes.Â
âJust you? How quaint.âÂ
With a sudden surge, he lunged at her, sword slicing through the air. Y/n dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the blade, her heart pounding in her chest as she heard several gasps come from behind her, presumably the princes who watched with bated breath. She retaliated with a swift strike, aiming for his midsection, but he blocked her with ease, the clash of metal ringing out.
âIs this all youâve got, little girl?â he taunted, pushing her back.Â
Y/nâs blood boiled at his arrogance. She was not just a mere assassin; she was a guardianâ a protector, but also one of Ereliaâs most skilled assassins. Channeling her anger, she lunged again, this time feinting to the left before quickly spinning to the right. The movement caught him off guard, and she managed to land a solid hit on his side, causing him to stagger.
But the leader quickly regained his footing, a snarl twisting his features. He swung his sword again, and Y/n barely managed to duck, feeling the rush of air as the blade missed her by inches.Â
âImpressive,â he sneered, âbut not enough.â
The room erupted into chaos once more as the guards engaged with the remaining attackers, but Y/nâs focus remained on the leader. She could sense the shift in the air, the tension building to a breaking point.
With every exchange, Y/n felt her strength waning. She was agile and skilled, but the leaderâs experience was evident. He fought with a ferocity that nearly pushed her to her limits, each blow forcing her to dig deeper within herself.
âIâve seen your type before,â he taunted, his voice dripping with contempt. âAlways thinking you can protect them. But theyâre just princesâ nothing but pawns in a game they donât understand.â
Fury ignited within Y/n, a flame that burned hotter than before. âYou donât know anything about them,â she spat, launching herself at him once more.
Their weapons clashed, the sound echoing through the library as they fought for dominance. She could hear the distant sounds of the remaining assailants being overwhelmed by the guards, but she had to finish this fight herself.
With a burst of adrenaline, Y/n found an opening. She sidestepped his thrust and lunged forward, driving her dagger deep into his shoulder. He howled in pain, staggering back as she pressed her advantage.
The leaderâs expression shifted from arrogance to disbelief. He looked at her, his eyes wide with shock. âYouââ
Before he could finish, Y/n followed through, twisting the dagger to create more damage. With a final thrust, she buried the blade into his chest, a decisive blow that ended the fight. The man crumpled to the ground, his breath escaping in a harsh gasp.
With the leader defeated, the remaining assailants faltered, their resolve crumbling. The guards quickly moved to subdue them and dragged the ones who hadnât been killed to the dungeon where she was sure Chan would not be forgiving in his questioning, and the library fell silent, save for the ragged breaths of the princes and Y/n.
As Y/n stood there, panting and bloodied, the adrenaline began to ebb, replaced by a deep weariness. She felt the weight of the night pressing down on her, the enormity of what had just happened sinking in. Taking in the sight of the library that now looked like someone had rampaged through it, tables were overturned, stools and chairs laid on their side with cracked wood and books, now with blood stained pages, lay on the ground as the shelves that held them were broken and knocked over.
It was then that she felt Seonghwaâs presence beside her. âViper, are you okay?â he asked, his voice low and filled with concern.
âIâm fine,â she replied, but the sharp pain in her side reminded her otherwise, she placed a hand over the wound.
âFine? Youâre bleeding!â Seonghwa exclaimed, his worry palpable.
âI said Iâm fine!â Y/n snapped, but the pain was becoming harder to ignore.Â
âYouâre not fine,â he insisted. âYou need to be treated. Please.â
As the guards began to secure the area and assist the injured, Y/n relented. She could see the sincerity in Seonghwaâs eyes, and despite her instincts to brush off her injuries, she knew he was right.
âOkay,â she murmured, allowing him to lead her away from the chaos of the library and toward the palaceâs infirmary.Â
â
The journey to the infirmary was quiet, the weight of the eveningâs events hanging heavily in the air. Y/n focused on her breathing, trying to steady her racing heart.Â
Once they reached the infirmary, Seonghwa pushed open the door and guided her to a bed. âSit,â he ordered gently, his voice filled with authority.Â
Y/n complied, wincing as she settled down. Seonghwa rushed to gather supplies, his movements quick and purposeful. As he returned, he began to clean her wounds, the sting of the antiseptic making her flinch.
âViper,â he started, his voice low. âWhat you did back there⊠It was incredible. You saved all of us.â
She met his gaze, her heart fluttering at his sincerity. âI just did what I was hired to do, your Highness.â
âSeonghwa, to you. And you did more than that,â he insisted, applying a fresh bandage to her side. The way he told her to call him by name caught her very off guard and she looked at him in shock. âYouâre not just a protector; youâre one of us now. You saved my life.â
Y/n felt her breath catch in her throat. âI appreciate that, Seonghwa, but Iâm an assassin, not someââ
âThat doesnât matter,â he interrupted, his tone earnest. âWhat matters is who you are now. You risked your life for us, and that means something.â
His words struck a chord deep within her, and she felt a warmth spread through her chest. âThank you, Seonghwa. Iâm just glad I was there in time.â
As he finished tending to her wounds, Seonghwaâs hand lingered on hers, a moment of connection that felt profound amidst the chaos of the night.Â
âI want you to know,â he said quietly, âthat we trust you now. I trust you.â
Warmth pricked at Y/nâs chest, a wave of gratitude flooding through her.
âY/n.â
A look of confusion washed over Seonghwaâs features before realization. She had just told him her name, not an alias, but her true birth name. Seonghwa couldnât explain the feeling that spread through his body at that moment, to know that she trusted him enough to be the first to know such information. She had been heavily guarded when she arrived at the castle and honestly, Seonghwa didnât think they would get anywhere close to breaking down the walls she had built around herself. There had been a shift in the dynamic between the assassin and eldest prince, and Seonghwa could only hope that it would continue to change for the better. For everyoneâs sake. For Y/nâs sake, as well.
For now, Seonghwa would keep her name to himself, just between them.

Pairing: Evil Queen!Yeosang x fem!reader
Word count: 5,970
Yeosang watched as you strolled through town, an annoyingly cheerful smile on your face. Why were you always so happy? What was there to be happy about?
Everyone you passed greeted you with a bright grin, their faces lighting up when they saw you, especially the men. Yeosang grimaced at the sickening sight, observing from his window. He didn't understand why everyone was so fond of you. There was nothing special about you. You were average, dull, and ordinary. Yeosang, however, was royalty. He was powerful, intelligent, and wealthy. He ruled over the kingdom and had an magnificent castle, furnished with only the finest pieces of furniture. He should be the one getting all of the praise and attention, not you.
"Why does everyone like her so much?" He grumbled.
It took everything in him to step away from the window though he wanted to keep watching you. It sounds absurd, watching someone you despise. Yeosang never once stopped to consider that fact. He was too busy keeping tabs on you and peering at you through his large viewing window. When he wasn't doing that, he was watching you through his enchanted mirror.
He paced around his room, taking long strides across the floor, his mind fogged with thoughts of you.
"You need not concern yourself with her, your majesty." His mirror spoke.
"I'll do as I please." Yeosang snapped.
"She is only causing you stress." The mirror continued. "This obsession you have is not good for you."
"It's not an obsession." He hissed. "And how do you know what's good for me?"
"This behavior is no good, your majesty. It will only cause you harm."
"Stay out of my business. What I do is none of your concern."
"Very well." Sighed the mirror.
Yeosang continued stalking around his room, his temper being pushed to its limits. He was already annoyed with you to begin with, then his nosey mirror had to get in his business. He's there for Yeosang to watch the townspeople (and you), not to give him unwanted opinions.
The king had to come up with a solution to this issue. Perhaps he could just try to be better than you. He reached up, running his fingers over the long hair at the base of his neck. Maybe he could grow his hair out more? His hand then moved to his black and purple attire. Maybe wear flashier clothes?
How could he bring more attention to himself?
He was quick to shoot the idea down, thinking it was too foolish. It would never work. He had to come up with another idea.
Yeosang sat in front of the magic mirror that hung in his chambers, a scowl on his face as he did so. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"
He already knew the answer.
"As you wish."
The face in the mirror disappeared, an image of you strolling down the street replacing it. You smiled brightly as you waved to everyone. Yeosang glowered at the sight of you. He couldn't understand how the townspeople adored you and fawned over you.
"She's not anything special." He grumbled. "Her looks are mediocre at best. What about mine?"
"It's not just her looks." The mirror spoke.
"I beg your pardon?"
"It's her personality."
"What about her personality?" Yeosang inquired, his tone becoming snappy.
"She's extremely kind to everyone she meets. That is why everyone loves her."
Yeosang let out a scoff. "Please."
"You need not be so sour towards her, your majesty."
"What did I tell you about staying out of my business?"
"I am only looking out for you, your majesty."
"Well, stop."
"She has done nothing wrong. Tell me, what has she done to you personally?"
Yeosang's jaw clenched in annoyance.
"Existed."
"That is not a valid answer."
"You have no right to ask me these questions." He snapped.
"I am only curious."
"She's become the center of attention. I'm supposed to be the one everyone pays attention to. She is only a citizen, I'm royalty."
"Perhaps you should try being nicer." Mirror suggested.
"I am nice. I've never once been unfair or harsh with the people of this town."
"That may be true, but you're not a very friendly king. Y/n goes out on a walk through town every day and is always kind to anyone she meets. You stay cooped up in here."
"And?"
"You should try getting out. Perhaps try and socialize with the townspeople."
"I've heard enough." Yeosang held his hand up. "I don't need you to sit here and nag me."
"I am not nagging. I am merely making suggestions."
Yeosang glared at the mirror before stalking away.
Yeosang was deep in thought as he sat on his throne. He had to do something to get rid of you. Attempting to switch up his appearance to shift the attention to himself was a stupid idea. There had to be another way.
I could have her killed. He thought to himself. Then I wouldn't have to deal with her anymore.
He shook his head at the idea. For some reason, thinking about ridding you from the planet left a bitter taste in his mouth. He had to think of something else.
Moments later, a devious idea popped into his head, one that would surely take all the attention away from you.
Yeosang then began constructing a plan.
For once, he listened to what the mirror had suggested and decided to get out of the castle. His perfectly polished shoes tapped against the cobblestone streets as he strode down them.
With a plan on his mind, he went to your quaint home nestled just outside the trees. He came to a stop in front of your door, giving it a few brisk knocks. You answered shortly after, a look of surprise flashing across your features.
"Oh. Hello, your majesty." You greeted with a small curtsey. "What brings you here?"
"I wanted to invite you to the castle for dinner."
Your eyes widened, cheeks flushing.
"Me?"
Yeosang nodded.
"Why?"
"You see, I've decided to do something special and choose one person to come have dinner at my castle, as well as receive a personal tour of the place."
Your eyes sparkled. "Really?"
"Of course, my dear."
"Wow." You placed your hand over your mouth in shock. "I can't believe this."
"Do you accept my invitation?" King Yeosang asked, awaiting your answer.
"Yes, absolutely!"
"Wonderful. Here are the arrangements." The king retrieved an invitation from inside his coat, handing it over to you.
You stared down at it, the date and time written on the decorative parchment in perfect calligraphy.
"I'll see you then, my dear." Yeosang waved as he walked away, a sinister smirk tugging at his lips once he was turned away from you.
You were immensely excited about having dinner with the king. You always thought he was a rather attractive young man and couldn't help but feel giddy at the fact that he chose you of all people to come to the castle. He could have chosen any one else, but he picked you.
You couldn't help but wonder why he was allowing a citizen to have dinner with him.
King Yeosang has never had anyone by his side. He's ruled the kingdom on his own ever since he took the throne. Perhaps he was holding this dinner to find a queen of his own.
You let out a gasp as the thought crossed your mind. If that was the case, did that mean he was considering you to fill that position?
You were quick to shake the thought away, not wanting to get ahead of yourself.
"There's no way." You chuckled. "That couldn't possibly be it."
Instead of allowing yourself to be delusional, you chose to settle on the possibility that he just wanted to build a better relationship with some of his citizens.
The number of days until your special night with the king dwindled down to zero. You spent all afternoon searching your wardrobe for the perfect dress, planning your look accordingly. You couldn't believe how lucky you were. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and you didn't want to squander it. This would be your first proper meeting with the king and you wanted to make a good impression.
Once evening rolled around, you got yourself ready for your special night. When you were done, you stepped outside, ready to head towards the castle. You came to a halt when you saw a carriage sitting in front of your home.
"Miss Y/n. The king sent me to bring you to the castle." The coachman informed you.
You were surprised, and somewhat flattered, that he sent a carriage to take you to the castle. You had never experienced anything like that before.
Without wasting a moment more, you stepped inside the carriage, your heart racing.
Yeosang stared out one of the windows in his chambers, watching for you. It didn't take long for the carriage he sent to roll up at the entrance.
"Finally."
The king couldn't stop the evil smirk that tugged at the corner of his mouth. His plan was beginning to be put in motion.
"Your majesty, are you sure this is a good idea?" The mirror asked.
"It's the only way I'll ever be satisfied." Yeosang responded, impassively before striding out of his room and into the foyer.
He put on a fake smile when he greeted you, welcoming you to his home before escorting you to the dining room where he allowed you to take a seat at the opposite end of the large table.
"You have a wonderful home." You complimented as you sat down.
"Thank you." He then called for his kitchen staff to start bringing in the food.
The meal the staff had prepared looked amazing. You thanked them and let them know how delicious it looked.
Yeosang's jaw tightened as he watched the exchange. Even his own staff seemed delighted by your presence and kind compliments. It angered him.
"Just eat it." He demanded, his words coming out much harsher than he intended.
His anger was getting the best of him.
"Oh. Of course." You responded softly, reaching for your fork.
Yeosang gave a sharp glare to the kitchen staff, causing them to scurry out of the room.
"This is really good." You told him.
"Wonderful." He responded, trying to make his tone light.
Yeosang could hardly stand it. You where right there, just mere feet from him. His eyes moved to the steak knife sitting on the table, his mind wandering to dark places.
No. He thought. Stick to the plan.
All he had to do was endure you for the rest of dinner, then his plan would come into play.
"The townspeople are quite fond of you." King Yeosang spoke up.
"They are?"
"Of course. Do you not see them staring?"
You shook your head.
"You don't see everyone looking at you with adoration?"
You shook your head again.
"My." He chuckled. "You're an oblivious one, aren't you?"
"Iâ"
"The townspeople adore you. Their faces light up when they see you."
"I like to greet everyone I pass down the street."
"So you do." Yeosang murmured.
"Is there something wrong with that, your majesty?" You inquired.
Yes.
"No. Not at all." He lied.
You were so blissfully unaware of what you put him through on a daily basis, it was sickening.
Dinner had ended and Yeosang could finally begin the next part of his plan, but not before you stopped to compliment the cooks on the meal. They were so happy to get that praise from you. Yeosang tried not to let it bother him, but seeing how they smiled at your words made him livid.
"Come along, Y/n." He told you, trying to keep his tone light and friendly.
He led you through the halls, droning on about items in his home. It wasn't anything interesting. He was only trying to waste a bit of time. Without anyone noticing, he slipped something in your drink. Not anything dangerous, just something to make you a little drowsy for a short while, just in case you tried to put up a fight later.
"This painting here has been passed down for centuries." He pointed.
You nodded, feeling your eyelids become a bit heavier.
"Are you alright?" Yeosang asked, feigning concern.
"Just feeling a little sleepy."
"I see. Well, the tour is almost over. There's one last place I would like to show you."
You hummed in acknowledgement, following him down the hallway and through a door. The air becomes significantly more humid as you enter an area with stone walls. You pay no mind to it and continue trailing behind Yeosang.
"This is the dungeon." He told you. "Come closer. Have a look."
You moved towards the only cell, looking at the bars that were rusted with age. Yeosang opened the door causing it to groan and creak.
"It may be old, but it still does the job." Yeosang commented.
You took a step forward towards the opening of the cell.
"It's empty." You mentioned, taking notice of the lack of prisoners in the dungeon.
"It won't be for long."
You were about to ask why when you were shoved forward, falling onto your hands and knees, the sound of the creaky cell door being slammed shut. You gasped, turning to see Yeosang standing outside the prison cell with a smirk on his face.
"Oops. My hand slipped."
You scrambled to your feet, hurrying to the door, grabbing onto the bars, shaking them. The door wouldn't budge.
"The door is stuck."
"Yes. How observant of you." The king spoke in a sarcastic tone.
"I need to get out of here."
"I'm afraid the door is locked, my dear."
"There has to be a key."
"Oh, there is." Yeosang retrieved an old key from his suit jacket's pocket, waving it in the air.
"I... I don't understand."
Oh, Y/n. You're so naive.
"You're trapped." He stated, bluntly.
"But why? I didn't do anything."
The king scoffed. "I believe you need time to think about that."
He turned away, his cape billowing behind him as he left the room. The further he got, the more your heart sank. What did you do? You had never met the king before, so why was he so cross with you?
You slumped down on the cot, your eyelids feeling heavier than they had earlier. You were so tired. Maybe if you went to sleep, you would find out that this was all just a dream.
Yeosang sat in his chambers feeling more proud than ever. His plan actually worked.
"How did it go, your majesty?" Mirror asked.
"All went according to plan."
"Well, how do you feel?"
"Right now? Proud."
"I would like to say I'm happy for you, but I believe you've made a horrible decision."
"Well, I think I made the right decision. You'll see."
The next day, Yeosang sprung out of bed with a pep in his step. He strolled over to the window and looked out. The townspeople appeared to be going about their business, not noticing your lacking presence. He smirked to himself before getting ready for the day.
He spent part of the morning watching everyone through the magic mirror, pleased to see that none of them were questioning why you weren't around.
"Your majesty, don't you think you should check on the girl?" The mirror spoke up.
"Let me see her."
The scene of the town was replaced with you stuck in your prison cell. From the looks of it, you were still sleeping. You were curled up on the little cot with your arms wrapped around your small frame. Yeosang felt his chest tighten at the sight of you, but chose to ignore it.
You looked feeble all curled up like that.
Perhaps he should check on you.
You were still asleep when he arrived, but his footsteps woke you up. You pushed yourself up, your body feeling heavy from sleeping so deeply.
Lifting your head, you saw Yeosang standing outside your cell.
"Good morning, your majesty."
He didn't say anything.
"I don't know what I did, but I'm very sorry." You told him.
He scoffed in response. "You don't even know what you're apologizing for."
Even locked in a prison cell you were still unbearably polite. He hated that.
"If we could just talk about it, I'm sure we could work something out." You reasoned.
"There's nothing to talk about."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah."
"If you're upset about something, especially if it has to do with me, I'm more than willing to listen."
"I don't need you to listen." He snapped.
"I see." You murmured.
Without another word, Yeosang turned away and left the dungeon.
You slumped against the cold wall, your hands resting in your lap as you gripped the fabric of your dress. There was a few stains on it and it felt absolutely filthy. The damp air in the dungeon didn't do you any favors. Your hair was frizzy and your whole body felt sticky from the muggy atmosphere. The situation you were in was dreadful, but you refused to let yourself get discouraged. You weren't the type of person to lose hope so easily.
Yeosang told himself he would only come to see you to bring you food and water. That was all. He refused to go down to the dungeon unless he absolutely had to. However, once night fell, he kept thinking about your curled up figure that he saw this morning through the magic mirror. So, he returned once more to the dungeon with a blanket in hand.
"Here." He threw it into the cell before turning on his heel to leave.
You picked the folded cover up off the concrete floor, dusting it off.
"Thank you." You told Yeosang, your tone warm and sincere.
He froze for a moment, then went on his way without saying a word.
Days passed by, then weeks. Yeosang would watch you through the mirror, sometimes getting a tight feeling in his chest as he observed you trapped in your little cell. He would sometimes come and check on you, bringing you food and water. He tried not to go down to the dungeons any more than he had to, no matter what he was feeling.
You were still kind as ever, greeting him whenever he came down to deliver you a meal. You would ask how his day was and thank him for bringing you food. He hated it. He wanted you to be miserable and it didn't seem like you were.
Yeosang thought things would be different by now. He thought you would be begging to come out of the cell and that everyone in town would forget about you and focus more on him.
He even went out one day just to see if the response towards him would be different since you had been gone for a while.
Everyone he passed greeted him, bowing their heads and murmuring, "Hello, your majesty." But no one seemed happy to see him, even if he gave them his best smile.
He tried to hold in his anger as he continued down the street only to have it boiling over the edge after overhearing some of the male townspeople talking.
"Where's Y/n? I haven't seen her in a while."
"Me either. Now that you mention it, it's been weeks since I saw her out."
"Is she okay?"
"I hope she's not sick or something."
Yeosang didn't stick around to hear anything else.
As soon as he got back to the castle, he rushed to the dungeon, his anger fully taking control.
When he stormed in, you jumped up from your cot, startled by his sudden entrance.
"They're still talking about you. Why are they still talking about you?" He growled angrily.
"I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about."
"The townspeople! All I hear is, 'Where's Y/n? I haven't seen Y/n. I hope Y/n is okay.' and it's infuriating. I'm the king. People should be focused on me."
Your brows pulled together in confusion. "I don't understand."
"You're so oblivious! The guys all look at you with adoration. Their faces light up when you flash them a smile. No one does that to me."
You were taken aback by this revelation. King Yeosang was angry because the people in the kingdom are more focused on you than him? That's why he locked you in here?
"Oh my." You placed your hand over your mouth, processing everything. "I'm so sorry, your majesty."
He only stood, staring you down with an emotionless expression. Even now, you were referring to him as your majesty and being so nice. It made him mad.
"I had no idea. I didn't know everyone felt that way. I was just being kind. I didn't know it effected you so much... or the townspeople."
"Well, now you do."
Yeosang turned around and left the room, unable to stay there any longer. The kindness you had consistently shown him was beginning to eat away at him little by little. He knew if he stayed in that dungeon any longer, he would crack.
He stormed into his chambers, slamming the door behind him.
"I don't understand. I have her trapped in the dungeon but I don't feel any better. The men in the kingdom are asking where she is. She's gone, but they're still talking about her."
"What do the men have to do with this?" The mirror asked.
"Men? No. I didn'tâI didn't mean that. I mean the townspeople in general." Yeosang clarified, stumbling over his words.
"I thought you were mad that it wasn't you getting the attention?"
"I am. She's gone, and yet, no one bats an eye I pass. They're all too busy worrying about her. She's just another person living in the kingdom."
"Seems to me like your plan didn't work out the way you had hoped."
"We don't know that yet." Yeosang pointed, angrily.
"Your majesty, it's been weeks. Three to be exact. Nothing has changed. All you've done is make the townspeople worry."
Yeosang's jaw tightened.
This is not what he wanted to hear.
"She's being so nice to me. I locked her in a cell and she hasn't tried to escape. She hasn't even yelled at me. It's driving me crazy." Yeosang ran his fingers through his hair, tugging at the roots out of frustration.
"I think you like her."
"What?"
"I believe your feelings are mixed up. You didn't trap her in the dungeon so you could be the center of attentionâyou want her all to yourself."
"I beg your pardon?"
"You're angry that she's being nice to you because you feel bad for locking her up and you feel like you don't deserve her kindness." The mirror continued.
"No." Yeosang hissed. "That's not it at all. You think you know everything, but you don't."
"You're easier to read than you think, your majesty."
Yeosang was ready to smash the mirror to pieces. Instead, he grabbed a cape and threw it over the mirror, covering it up before storming off.
"You'll realize it sooner or later." Mirror told him just before he left the room.
Needing to be somewhere alone to simmer down, he went to the balcony overlooking his garden. His fingers gripped the concrete railing as he clenched and unclenched his jaw, his chest moving up and down as he tried to steady his breathing.
Was the mirror right?
Yes. His subconscious answered.
Yeosang squeezed his eyes shut.
There's no way he liked you. He couldn't possibly like you. Everyone liked you, but not him. No way.
If that was the case, why did his heart feel warm every time you spoke to him?
His head dropped as realization hit him.
Yeosang liked you. He liked you a lot.
And he locked you up. You've been alone in that dusty, old cell for three weeks. He hardly spoke to you, hardly gave you things besides food, water, and a single blanket. He was horrible. Why did he think that was a good idea? Feeling heavy with regret, he stepped back inside, heading down to the dungeon, dragging his feet as he went.
You heard the light thump of shoes against the stone steps, watching as Yeosang entered the dungeon, his head hanging low. His body language was unusual. Normally, he came striding into the room with a sour look on his face, but today was differentâmuch different.
You watched as Yeosang pulled a key from his coat, placing it into the lock on the cell door. There was a quiet, metal sound as he jiggled the key, followed by a click as the cell door was pulled open.
"Go." He said.
"I'm sorry?"
"I said go." Yeosang didn't make eye contact with you as he stood with the cell door open. "Locking you in here was a horrible idea. I don't know what I was thinking. You can go back home."
You slowly stepped out of the cell. Then, you did what Yeosang never expected you to do.
Instead of running out of the dungeon, you hugged him. His body stiffened in response.
"You're a lot kinder than you realize." You told him.
You pulled away, giving him a warm smile.
"Goodbye, your majesty."
You were more than relieved to finally be set free. You hated being trapped in that cell, but you knew you'd be set free eventually. Seeing that Yeosang seemed to come to his senses was reassuring.
You had a lot of time to think while you were locked up. First, you thought about how deceiving Yeosang was. He always seemed like a nice person, but he wasn't. Then, you began to realize he was just troubled, lonely, and confused. Despite having a negative outlook on him at first, you decided to be nice. That's just the type of person you were. Seeing that you were now able to go home, you couldn't help but think that maybe all that kindness paid off.
As you headed up the steps and out of the dungeon, Yeosang called for you.
"Wait!"
Hurried footsteps followed after as he tried to catch up with you. You paused, wanting to see what he would say.
"Your dress is dirty and I'm sure you'd like to bathe."
He was right. You desperately wanted (and needed) a bath. You didn't exactly have access to amenities like a bathtub while locked up.
"Iâ"
"Please." He cut you off before you could even begin your sentence. "It's the least I can do after what I put you through."
"Okay." You nodded.
He let out a huff of relief. "Follow me."
You wanted to be wary of his offer and wonder if he had some ulterior motiveâa second trap for you to fall into, but you couldn't seem to think that way. Based on the way he came dragging into the dungeon, you could tell he was feeling immense guilt.
Once upstairs, Yeosang led you to a bathroom where he asked you to wait while he got you a fresh change of clothes.
When he returned, he still wouldn't look you in the eye.
"Here you go. It's all I have."
You glanced down to see a folded up dress shirt and a pair of navy trousers.
You thanked him and stepped into the bathroom, your eyes immediately landing on a shower. Though you'd be thankful for anything, you were happy to see that the king had a shower. You were filthy and preferred to shower rather than sit in a tub full of dirt and other yuck that's built up over the past few weeks.
After thoroughly cleaning yourself, you felt much better. The clothes Yeosang had provided you with were a little baggy, but nothing you couldn't handle. You looked down at your soiled dress as you left the bathroom.
"I owe you an apology."
You jumped at the voice, lifting your gaze to find Yeosang standing in the hallway.
Did he wait for you?
"I shouldn't have locked you up. My reasoning was completely uncalled for. I was being selfish. I don't know what I was thinking."
"Thank you, your majesty."
"Don't." He held his hand up. "I don't deserve that title. Just Yeosang is fine."
He still wouldn't look at you. His eyes wandered anywhere but your face; he was ashamed. He was a king for goodness sake. He shouldn't have been acting the way he has been. While avoiding eye contact with you, he saw the dress you wore when you first arrived to the castle. It was a little stained and looked dingy from being exposed to the humid air and dirty floors
"I can have that cleaned for you." He spoke up, gesturing to your dress.
"Oh. That's alright." You politely declined.
"No. I insist. Please, just let me do this for you."
You gave in, handing the dress over to him. If getting your dress cleaned would make him feel better, you would allow him to do so.
"Thank you." He bowed his head. "Can we talk?"
"I suppose."
He handed the dress off to one of his castle staff and the two of you went out in the garden. You kept your arms wrapped around yourself, feeling the awkward tension in the air.
"I need to explain why I did what I did." He took in a deep breath, preparing himself. "At first, I was angry that you were getting all the attention because I felt it should have been me. I thought that's why I was mad. Then, I realized the real reason why I felt that way. I was jealous that the men in the kingdom were fond of you and so I locked you up to have you all to myself."
You were taken aback. Hearing his sudden confession made the whole situation a lot weirder.
"Goodness." You muttered. "I... I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything. I just wanted to get it all out there."
If Yeosang was jealous and wanted you all to himself, did that mean he liked you?
You turned to the king.
"Thank you for telling me. I think I'll be going home now."
"Wait. Do you want something to eat? I can have my cooks make something."
"No thank you. I think I just want to go home."
He seemed upset, but nodded. "I understand. I'll get your dress back to you as soon as possible."
You bid the king farewell and left. The atmosphere between the two of you was awkward. He was feeling guilty for what he did and appeared to be trying to make up for his behavior. You were forgiving, but didn't really feel like staying at the castle any longer than you had to.
A few days passed and you returned to regular life, falling back into your normal routine. Some of the townspeople bombarded you with questions, many of them genuinely concerned about your abrupt disappearance.
"Are you alright?"
"Where have you been?"
"Did something happen?"
You just brushed them off, saying that you were feeling a little under the weather. Despite what you went through, you wouldn't dare tell anyone what Yeosang did. You wanted to keep it to yourself.
You were currently at home reorganizing your bookshelf when there was a knock at your door. You put a pause on what you were doing and went to see who was at the door. Upon answering, you saw a box sitting on your doorstep. You also saw Yeosang hurrying away.
"Hey." You called out.
He froze, slowly turning around.
"What are you doing?" You asked.
"I was just returning your dress." He said.
You picked up the box adorned with a gold bow, glancing down at it.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." He nodded. "Well, I'll be going now."
"Wait."
He stopped, turning back towards you.
"I have so many questions."
You'd be lying if you said you hadn't been thinking about what Yeosang told you. It's all you thought about since returning home. You weren't sure how to accept his apology or even if you wanted to.
You always thought the king was handsome and you did kind of wanted him to like you, but after what he put you through, you were reconsidering the way you felt about him.
You watched from your front door as Yeosang chewed nervously on his bottom lip before speaking up.
"I'll answer them."
Minutes later, you found yourself sitting on your patio with Yeosang seated across from you.
"I'm going to be honest with you, I thought you were a wonderful person. I was so excited when I was invited to the castle, but you tricked me."
"I know. I'm truly sorry."
"Yes, well, I appreciate your apology." You pressed your lips together. "I do want to know something, though."
"What is it?"
"Why did you want to keep me all to yourself?"
"I told you it was jealousy, but it was also the fact that I like you."
"You didn't really act like it."
"I know." He fiddled with the rings on his fingers, clearly nervous.
"I'm not a vengeful person, you know. I also meant what I said that day. You are kinder than you realize. You locked me in a cell for three weeks, but you were also able to come to your senses and do the right thing. So, I'm choosing to forgive you."
"You are?"
You nodded.
Yeosang felt like some of the weight that had been on him was lifted when you said that. However, he knew he would have a long way to go. After realizing just how much he liked you, he wanted to right his wrong and maybe even get a chance to make you his for realâthe right way.
"I hope it's not too much to ask, but I would like it if we could get to know each other the proper way. I'm sure you don't have the same feelings as I do, especially after what I did to you. But, at the least, I'd like to be friends with you."
"Friends?" You questioned.
He nodded.
You knew Yeosang meant well and that he truly had changed, but it would take some time to fully trust him. Pursuing a relationship with him was something that was currently out of the question, but maybe in time you could work towards that.
"Truth is, I've always thought you were a handsome person. Of course, I don't know all that much about you."
"Right." He nodded.
"We can start with being friends." You told him. "We can work from there."
"That's alright. I absolutely understand. Truthfully, I'm just thankful that you haven't decided to shun meâor worse."
"I told you, I'm not a vengeful person."
Silence settled between the two of you.
"Well, I'd better get going." Yeosang stood up absurdly. "Thank you for your time."
He quickly said his goodbyes and started to head out.
"Yeosang." You called out.
He paused. "Yes?"
"I'm always open to spending time together. Just let me know."
A soft smile pulled at his lips as he nodded. "Will do."
With a final wave, he went on his way.
You were well aware of how odd your situation was. You agreed to try and be friends with a man who trapped you in a prison cell. However, he was a troubled man and someone who clearly didn't have his thoughts together. He needed someone to show him the right path and that someone was you.
