Some of the posts I see here y'all gotta stop seeing fanfics as "bad dc takes". Like, it's perfectly fine to not like a trope that's popular in fanfic, but you gotta stop seeing it as character meta is what I'm saying. Fanfic writers are not canon writers, they do not owe you canon compliant, and you don't get to assume that what they're writing comes from a place of ignorance when there are so many reasons to include/not include something in your fic.

Like, allow me to use my own fics as example since they're the only one I have background info on the knowledge and motivations of the author:

-I wrote a fic with Lazarus Rage in it once. Do I know it's not canon? Absolutely. Do I think it's necessary for the understanding of Jason's character? Not at all, I think canon Jason is more interesting without the pit rage. I just wanted to write it once because it looked cathartic and you know what? It was. It was super cathartic. I wanted to write a story about the progression of a depressive episodes and using pit rage to talk about the feeling of loss of control with intense anger issues and sensation of loss and deep self-hatred afterwards, and i thought writing this is gonna feel good and it felt good, for me and for the readers.

-I'm also currently finishing another fic, in which I've simplified Tim's relationship with Jason's a lot (basically Tim is still haunted by Jason's ghost and Dick is still his favourite Robin but the victim blaming is much less intense and there's an intense, genuine admiration for Jason and happiness to get him back). Is it because I hate canon and its complexity? No, I love it, I love when character relationships are fucked up and they make a mess. I'd love to explore that in a different fic, even have the prompt already. But I'm writing a really intense fic about trauma, taboo and lack of communication around sexual abuse, and there are so many characters pov and things happening and I have to do this right because we're talking about things that happen to real people and not being accidentally insensitive or sending a shit message is more important to me than perfect canon compliance, and it's just not the place for it. This story isn't about tim, and it's not about victim-blaming. It's a fascinating can of worms to open, but I'm not gonna open it if I don't have the space to deal with it because I'm not gonna let worms roam freely all over my fanfic when I can choose not to include the worms in my story, because it might rely on base material but it's still a finite story that exists within its own scope because I'm not a comics writer, I'm a fanfic writer and my story doesn't exist as a pure extension of the comics and I don't owe you canon compliance. And how boring would that be if we could only write canon compliant stuff! No more coffee shop aus, no powers aus, fantasy aus, no more non canon ships between characters that hated eachother until the day they died (but had so much sexual tension)... Fanfic is not one single entity that takes place in a simplified version of the canon universe complete with consistent lukewarm tropes and watered down understanding of characters. Fanfics are rich and diverse and yeah canon compliant is great and i want more of it but the universe is so much wider and that's what makes it rich! Do some people write fanfic and also don't interact with or know canon? Sure, plenty of them. Does that fanfic reflect their opinion of canon? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. You don't know that. In the meantime, people are still creating extra content and enriching the fandom experience and if you don't like it, genuinely, the filter tags button is right there. That's not to say there are no racist or classist or sexist tropes in fanfics, but again that exists within the scope of that story. Bad writing exists in canon, and it exists in fanfics, and sometimes a story is canon compliant with a terrible message and sometimes a story is canon divergent with a terrible message and pushing away everyone who writes things that aren't canon compliant is not going to fix these issues in the dc fandom. Telling people to "not write the character at all if you're going to write them ooc" assumes your understanding of what is essential to the character is perfect and The Right Way to interact with a fandom and it's patronising and not only do you take the risk of looking like a moron the second you make a mistake, it is actual gatekeeping and the reason many people find getting into comics/fandom intimidating in the first place. (And it also shits on the potential of AUs like dark reflections, mafia etc. Of course Mafia Bruce who kills people is deeply ooc. These stories are still fun and it's not wrong to write them!)

"This story really should have addressed that thing that happens in canon" did it happen in the setting of the fic? No? Then shut up and let the fic tell its own story, it doesn't have to "address" anything it doesn't have space for. Again, don't like don't read is a thing. Fanfic enriches the fandom, it doesn't take away from it, but you know what can? Canon writing. I'm way more concerned with what dc is having batman represent nowadays than with fanfic I haven't read because I knew I wouldn't like it.

TLDR: It's understandable to be upset when people who don't interact with canon material at all try to assert their opinion on canon as the truth, especially if they call any attempt at disagreeing with the mischaracterization gatekeeping, but that doesn't make you immune to being a gatekeeper. Assuming you know a writer's knowledge and opinions on a character because of that one fic of them is naive and a misunderstanding of what fanfic is. Fanfic writers are still real people who give you cool stuff for free and you don't have to like it but you still have to be respectful about it, and all that negative energy you spend on rants about "bad character and" you've read in fanfics would be so much better spent on bad canon writing because these people do have the power to fuck your favourite character over and they do owe you canon compliance, and with the amount of effort some fanfic writers put into their fics compared to some of the writers who get payed to write canon, you guys could stand to be more respectful about fanfics.

Y'all I'm saying this with the biggest love for y'all, but do not bond too hard with a fictional character over your trauma. Especially not in this fucking series. Maybe if it's a closed medium like a movie where similar themes are explored in a way that cathartic to you that can work, but you don't know where they're taking this character and what they will have him do. So keep a layer of seperation.

I'm saying this cause I kept seeing people say things like there was hesitation in Armands eyes when Louis told him to get in the coffin.

I think the confusion has multiple levels. It is ambiguous.

People want to be protective of Armand, especially because of his history with slavery and sexual violence. That is absolutely fair. While for honesty sake I'm still in the I don't trust Armand camp, I still feel like much would be lost in my enjoyment of Assads acting ability and the series overall if I just thought of him as cartoonishly evil. To me he's a dangerous being that finds a way, while insisting on being a mercyful being. Mercy and willfulness will bring forth a specific kind of cruelty. That's what I think. So feel free to take my opinions with a grain of salt if you believe Armand completely.

But there are two things that people assume about the dynamic Louis and Armand have in Paris that I take issue with.

First is that it was solely Louis who basically forced Armand into the role of a submissive. I do not think so. The scene where Armand tells Louis about himself works twofold. On one hand Louis is supposed to understand it as an inivitation. Armand is showing himself to vulnerable to gain Louis trust. He's also showing Louis that their relationship will be different from the one he had with Lestat. But I think the ground work for the d/s dynamic is Armand asking Louis who he is. Remember that is what Armand says he does. He finds the vulnerability. That is what convinced Louis to chose Armand, which is what Armand wanted. However Armand is still clearly the one in power (which is how a dynamic like that should work). Louis can't make him do what he doesn't want to do. Armand has denied Louis when he wants to. Another clue to the fact that their dynamic definitely has rules in Paris is the Paris version of "Are you asking me or making me?" that Armand immediately apologized for. Opinions may differ, but I think he's well aware that Louis asked him and did not want to play in that moment. So Louis definitely also has boundaries. They've not talked about it like I imagine a well adjusted couple would do nowadays, but they have shown each other what lines not to cross.

Okay the get in the coffin scene. A lot of people have said there was a hesitation on Armands part. I did not see it personally. I would love to know where that idea comes from.

One thing seems to be that it was around the coven. Armand himself said he has fucked most of them and some at the theater. Santiago was getting head mid conversation some episodes ago. Supposedly Armand and Lestat fucked in the Opera with Nicki watching. I doubt that he seriously had an issue with the idea in genral.

What I saw in that scene was the equivalent to "Come to bed love" "I still have work to do" "I am wearing the thing you like" cue pushing the Laptop of the table running. The look that Armand gave Louis after he said face down in the coffin read as horny contemplation to me if anything. Working his jaw that way and looking Louis up and down just a moment shy of licking his lips and letting his tongue cartoonishly roll out his mouth. That's what I saw. Even if we were a little squeaked out by Armand not immediately consenting,

I think it's very normal to deny yourself pleasure you're generally open to in the face of responsibilities. To me it was a very "You're right it can wait." or "You know what? That's more fun." type of energy.

I have a lot of things on my mind as to why that didn't translate. Some people have openly talked about relating to Armands trauma and therefore being uncomfortable. I think to people with certain traumas this type of play can be very triggering and therefore should be approached with caution. It is still important that you know when your perception of things is bleeding into how you're picking up on cues in a fictional story though. That's why I said it's a little dangerous to get too attached.

Louis and Armand are toxic for multiple reasons, but to me personally the kink aspect is the least toxic aspect. To be honest if it were a healthy relationship and that was what both of them needed to feel safe and secure in the relationship I would be down for that. Truely go of kings. But I can't say that, because that's not what's going on and it's not that kind of show.

People have also said that Armand is retraumatising himself with the dom/sub dynamic. I think if anything him trying to keep a crushing hold on Louis is the more traumatising aspect. Fully knowing he is mot loved as he should be, but chosing to stay with Louis. Slowly draining Louis of everything that fascinated Armand about him, everything that Armand seems to like in a man until Louis is just as grey as the walls of that Penthouse is doing worse things to his psyche than any play ever could. That's my honest opinion. Because again sexually or not Armand will still do what he wants. Either himself if he can uphold his powerful benovelence or through a distructive force of his choosing. There is a moment where the relationship stopped being a relationship and became a job to him. Someone said that Armand never moves on without something new in mind. Maybe that's what it is. That he wouldn't know what to do with himself yet. He's waiting for the other shoe to finally drop.

Also one of the writers DEFINITELY did this nad wanted us to know it was an option. Girlies who like their writing and wanna spice things up this is your time.

TDLR I have nuanced reasons to believe Armand definitely wanted to get backshots in that codfin while he read.

Dog it's 2024 I don't want to fill the already rife BB tag with more of this discourse but I just want to give my two cents. Y'all anonymous sebaciel diehards must work overtime to churn out an ask to every damn anti. Anti as a label pisses me off cus I literally just don't want the fucking grown ass man-presenting demon to kiss the 14 year old human. And thank the lord, he doesn't!

I really don't like shota straight up. I find it disturbing that people enjoy it and Yana is openly a shotacon but as black butler stands, it is not a BL story. Whilst very few and far between, I overlook the suggestive panels of Ciel + other underage characters cus I don't derive any pleasure from them and they make me cringe out of my mind knowing the true undertones. But the other 98% of the manga is my jam! From my interpretations of the characters using the canon material, there is nothing that suggests that Sebastian wants to be in a romantic/sexual relationship with this kid. The concept of Ciel presenting sexual feelings towards Sebastian as a response to his own sexual trauma is for sure an interesting idea! And I do not hate people that have this headcanon and explore it in a way that makes it clear it is not a cute sexy thing!! I find it disturbing seeing people who sexualise Ciel (Toboso included, I'm aware. However, it does not swamp the narrative of the story outside of his sexual trauma which is villainized!) that get off to the pairing and call it canon. I wouldn't be here were that true. HOWEVER, Ciel does not present this behaviour towards Sebastian in the actual media. The kid is sexualised but it's either played off as a joke (the dreaded corset scene from LITERALLY the first volumes) or its villainised (Kelvin, Druitt, the cult members). It is not forbidden to explore underage sexual abuse so long as it is made clear that it is inappropriate.

Sebastian is not a pedophile for Christ's sake. I love demon lore so much and knowing how to manipulate and tempt humans with words and sexuality or whatever it may cost is the nature of a demon. That is, if it is needed. In my eyes, if Ciel were to one day command Sebastian to fuck him, he would - he is bound by contract to do as his master tells him and if that's what will get him a meal then so be it. If Ciel one day commanded Sebastian to truly love him, in ANY capacity, it is up to the reader to decide how deep Sebastian's humanity goes past "me hungry" to fundamentally enable him to love in the first place. Because the manga does not characterise Sebastian as actually having any love sexual or platonic towards Ciel outside of the protection he displays within the rules of the contract.

But thankfully for me, Ciel has never ordered Sebastian to fuck him because NO WHERE do we see him actually want that. There are even moments where Ciel is distraught at the idea of Sebastian simply tucking him into bed to calm him back to sleep after waking from a nightmare. The fact I have to explain the sexual motives of a 14 year old boy makes me sick to my stomach, do you people not see how foul that is?

So when you tell me Yana Toboso is a shotacon - that is a lot different to Black Butler being a BL beyond the undertones of a wee few panels, and a fanon, out-of-character interpretation of their fucked up power dynamic riding off the fact that Sebastian's hunger could transpire to a moral depravity i've no interest in. Good day.

For real though I hate how removed from our own discussions CSA survivors really are honestly.

The only representation I can think of in ANY media are think pieces "exploring the issue" made by non-survivors. The only times in which the character being groomed/abused aren't also sexualized for the audience's enjoyment are when it's being understated because the media is kid friendly (think, series of unfortunate events, or a surprising amount of "forced marriage" tropes in childrens movies like barbie)

Half the time like in fuckin Six the musical it's made into some "feminist" critique that couldn't be fucked to do a single sensitivity check that's like "hey maybe don't sexualize a historical figure who really fucking went through these traumas to make fucking pedophile jokes about them maybe"

Like sometimes I fucking hate y'all non survivors because you will literally never shut the fuck up long enough for us to talk about our own goddamn experiences? Like y'all don't fucking KNOW what it FEELS like to be abused in that way and throwing hypersexual people under the bus every time you want to make an edgy oc isn't doing a goddamn fucking thing for us actually.

Not to mention in a case where the pedophilia is actually addressed as an issue and called out I have literally only seen one fucking piece of media that allows the character to progress past the trauma itself and to show any kind of recovery. Literally every other media either kills the character off immediately to show how "gritty" the setting is or ends the story before they can move on or even more hilariously just never mentions it again and suddenly they're unaffected by it like it never happened.

Like I'm actually tired of the way y'all metaphorically cosplay our traumas long enough to put out the exact same shit that's always been done and being like woww this is so subversive and new!!!

Like they are too weird/OOC/morally grey? Any examples of what that looks like for you?

This is super interesting to think about, but it's actually hard to peg. It's one of those 'I can't define X, but I know it when I see it' sort of things.

I try to do my best to write any and all prompts that I receive! So as a blanket answer, I will write anything like 99.9% of the time. I usually put a disclaimer when it's a pairing I usually wouldn't write/never have written or an idea that I would've thought up differently/have never written before so people know that I probably wouldn't have flocked to the idea on my own. But I definitely am more on the page of, I will take a stab at anything once (like I never thought I'd write Carol/Therese or Rose/Deb/Lou, but here we are) or like the fact that I am a firm believer in Top!Lou Miller supremacy but will keep doing all of the Top!Deb prompts that y'all keep throwing me.

The only things I can think of that I will automatically not write (which is really rare) would be more like:

That exact prompt already exists (so I'll link it for you!)

I've already written something super similar or another author has

I don't think my readers will safe/comfy reading this even if there is a trigger warning

Themes that involve rape/sexual assault [This comes with a caveat: I will explore characters who have a past/history with such and write about them dealing with their trauma/emotions, but I will NEVER write a prompt where those themes are the plot idea involving the characters I'm writing about as the main point or using it as a kink, etc. Consent is absofuckinglutely key.

So in general: This was quite unhelpful because I don't really have an answer, but long story short, I'll take any prompt even if it's not really "me" because I'm writing for you guys and want to write whatever you all want to see; I'll just always have your back and put your safety first!!
