How to care for your NB-4L battery.
This is the Replacement Canon NB-4L Battery, You can extend the life of your NB-4L battery significantly through the proper care and handling of your battery.
Any new NB-4L battery should first be fully charged by leaving it plugged in overnight. Once a computer battery is fully charged it will no longer accept any more power. It is a common practice to leave Cameras plugged in after they have been turned off so that the battery has a full charge the next time you use your Camera. It is probably fully charged within 5 hours.
A brand new NB-4L Camera battery is in a weakened condition since it has not been conditioned yet. Condition and break in your new battery by performing 5 partial discharge and recharge cycles the first week you receive your new battery.
Run on battery power without the AC adapter cord at least once a week to keep the NB-4L battery cells active and at their peak potential. When your Camera is plugged into the power adapter the battery goes to 'standby mode' while your Camera runs directly on electricity from the wall outlet.
Even though your battery indicates it is fully charged, your battery will return to a weakened state again in a few months if it does not get some exercise through partial discharge and recharge cycles while running on battery power alone.

You can extend your NB-4L battery run time by minimizing the power drain on your battery. A 3 cell battery will run approximately 2 to 2-1/2 hours when the battery is new. Even longer times can be achieved by minimizing the power consumption of your laptop. Here are the top ways to reduce your power consumption.
Avoid using the CD or DVD drive as the motor consumes a fair amount of power.
Turn off your wireless finder if you are not using the internet.
Remove any devices plugged into your USB ports or other ports.
Close out programs you are not using. By minimizing the load on your CPU, sometimes you can avoid having the cooling fan turn to its high speed mode.
Increase your memory to 4 Gigabytes. This creates less work for your hard drive. Data is temporarily written to your hard drive when your memory is not sufficient to hold all the data on the many pages you may be accessing.
Reduce the brightness of your laptop screen. This is the number one drain on your battery by far.

Introduction to Film-Making: Session02
Class In our second session, we have learned how to handle tripods and different broadcasting-cameras properly.
Later on, we have gone into detail concerning Aperture-Units, the use-cases of “stops” and discussed the most common framing-sizes.
Tripods Tripods consist of three legs to have a fixed position, an arm for camera movements (which has to be loosen before the legs are spread), a camera-plate, which can be tilted or panned with several knobs and a quick-release-plate which is used to fixed below the camera.
This picture shows the upper end of a tripod with a safety-knob to tighten or loosen the tilt of the tripod (turning it clockwise will tighten the tilt safety). Next to the tilt is a red button, which is used to detach the quick-release plate from the base-plate.
Here you can see the one of the tripod’s spirit-levels. This one ensures that the legs below are placed horizontally correct. Next to the spirit-level, you can find the knob to influence the panning-safety. Turning it clockwise will tighten the safety. The next picture shows the tripod from above. The camera with its quick-release plate is inserted from the left side of the base-plate until the safety makes a “click-sound”. In the lower left corner of the picture, the arm of the tripod is located with it’s safety knob right next to it.

For this active practice, we split into groups of two and each group was allowed to pick one the following cameras:
Sony EX1
Sony X200
Canon XF305
My team picked the EX1, but every team had to find the following components at each of the cameras:

zoom switch between servo and manual
In general, we had to switch all components to manual to understand all components and their purposes. In the film industry, nobody is using the automatic function because when you know the camera, you should be able to change the settings in a few seconds. Furthermore, some auto-functions are not reliable in comparison to manual adjustments. The picture below shows the Sony EX1 from above with the servo-zoom function which worked really slowly. To turn off the servo-zoom, you have to flip the switch towards manual.
The EX1 works with a build-in lens with variable focal-length between 5.8mm and 81.2mm. The wheel to the left can change the focal-length by turning it clockwise. The same applies for the aperture ring right from the zoom-ring. Between both rings are the switches to choose between manual and auto mode for the aperture-ring/iris and the focus-ring. On the far right side of the picture, you can see a switch to choose between different ND-filters. The EX1 possesses two ND-filters.
The last pictures shows the focus-ring and a small icon which shows how to change into “Full Manual Focus”-Mode. The focus-ring has to be pulled back towards the camera-operator. Otherwise, you only overwrite the auto-mode.
Aperture-Units: During the second session of week two, we discussed in depth the units of an aperture-ring and its scale-steps, which are called “f-stops” as well.
The smaller the hole of the blades gets, the more increases the number written on the aperture-ring. The light will be more focussed and the Depth of Field will decrease, when the aperture is rather closed than opened.
The common maximum of an aperture-ring is f1.4, but there are some lenses used in the industry which can open up to a value of 0.8. That gives the possibility to shoot scenes in low-light situations without increasing the ISO or the Shutter-Angle as much as with a you would have to with a f1.4 lens.
The common minimum or the value, where the aperture is almost closed changes between f20.0 and f22.0 depending on the lens.
The scale-steps or f-stops rise as followed:
1.4, 2.0, 2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8.0, 11.0, 16.0, 20.0, 22.0
As you can see, the first two values have to be seen as given and from there on each following value is a product of the second last with the factor 2 (except f11.0 and f20.0). When you increase/decrease the value of the aperture, you halve/double the amount of light hitting the camera sensor. Therefore, each lens has two extremes where the aperture exposes the picture with the least or the most amount of light as possible. These extremes used to contain mistakes or in technical terms: aberration what means, that color-shifting, blooming (brightest parts/overexposure influence rest of the picture -> vertical streaking) and fringing (unfocused purple/magenta due to high contrast on edges and daylight) can appear on the footage. The space between 2-3 stops apart from each extreme is usually called the “sweet-spot” of a lens, where the picture is at its sharpest point.

Apart from different framing sizes, there are other terms to specify certain aspects of framings like aesthetics, appearance and perspective.
Cut-In:
A Cut-In is used, when the camera moves closer to a person or an object between shots and th
ere is a cut between these positions.

POV-Shot:
The camera imitates the character’s view so that the audience is able through his/her vision. This can be used as a dramatic effect or for realism.

Over-the-Shoulder: This mostly means a MCU or a CL with a silhouette of another character in the opposite side of the frame to visualize a conversation and the relationship between characters.

Neutral Density Filters
Benefits and Basics Basically, ND-filters or neutral density filters are similar to sunglasses for the camera to have better control over light entering the lens without losing color ton information in the image. This is possible by modifying the intensity of all wavelengths in the light equally by filtering them through an ND-filter, screwed in front of the lens. The user can use exposure properties which would cause an overexposed image without an ND-filter. Another benefit of using ND-Filters is the possibility to create images with a shallow depth of field or lots of motion-blur under bright daylight conditions.
A shallow depth of field can be created by using a widely opened aperture, but under bright daylight conditions this leads to overexposure.

Types of Filters You can differ between graduate, variable and extreme ND-filters. Graduate filters have different filter intensities on its surfaces. This can be useful if some parts of a picture are rather bright and the provides a smooth transition to less filtered parts of an image. Variable neutral density filters make it possible to use different filters on the same lens. A common issue are incompatible filters which can only be used for certain lenses with certain diameters, but by combining different filters with at least one turnable filter you can adjust different filters on each other. The result is a wider range of control over light but the image is losing quality as well. Nevertheless, a huge benefit are less ND filters to carry during a shoot.
Extreme filters work like variable filters with the difference that you can increase the amount of motion blur in a picture without stacking different filters on each and lose image quality.
Disadvantages Unfortunately, some ND-filters are not able to reduce the wavelengths of light equally what leads to a color shift within an image. Especially in not visible spectrum of light (UV and IR) can occur loss of color information.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 5/01/2017
OsteoOmics Investigation: In preparation for OsteoOmic investigation activities planned this week, the crew configured OsteoOmics hardware and the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), reviewed procedures, conferred with ground experts and completed an OsteoOmics practice session. Samples were retrieved from Minus Eighty Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) and General Laboratory Active Cryogenic ISS Experiment Refrigerator (GLACIER) for the investigation and temporarily stowed them for tomorrow’s operations. Crewmembers experience bone loss in orbit due to lack of gravity acting on their bones. OsteoOmics investigates the molecular mechanisms that dictate this bone loss by examining osteoblasts, which form bone, and osteoclasts, which dissolve bone. Improved understanding of these mechanisms could lead to more effective countermeasures to prevent bone loss during space missions and in a wide range of disorders on Earth. This may lead to better preventative care or therapeutic treatments for people suffering bone loss as a result of bone diseases like osteopenia and osteoporosis, or for patients on prolonged bed rest. Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Airlock (JEMAL) Operations: In preparation for the deploy of NanoRack Cubesat Deployer (NRCSD) #11 satellites planned for May 15, the crew opened the inner hatch of the JEMAL, extended the airlock Slide Table (ST) into the JEM Pressurized Module (JPM), mounted the Small Fine Arm Attachment Mechanism (SAM) and Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform (MPEP) facilities to the ST and returned the table into the JEMAL. Human Research Program (HRP) Collections and Operations: A 50S crewmember collected Flight Day (FD) 15 blood and urine samples yesterday and today for Biochem Profile, Repository, and Marrow investigations and air samples for Marrow. The Biochem Profile experiment tests blood and urine samples obtained from astronauts before, during and after spaceflight. Specific proteins and chemicals in the samples are used as biomarkers, or indicators of health. Post-flight analysis yields a database of samples and test results, which scientists can use to study the effects of spaceflight on the body. Repository is a storage bank that is used to maintain biological specimens over extended periods of time under controlled conditions. This archive of biosamples will be used as a resource for future spaceflight related research. The Marrow investigation identifies the effect of microgravity on bone marrow. It is believed that microgravity, like long-duration bed rest on Earth, has a negative effect on the bone marrow and the blood cells that are produced in the bone marrow. SkinSuit Investigation: Over the weekend the crew performed two days of Skinsuit activities. With assistance from a crewmember acting as operator they took measurements after donning the suit in the morning and again before doffing in the afternoon. The Skinsuit is a tailor-made overall with a bi-directional weave specially designed to counteract the lack of gravity by squeezing the body from the shoulders to the feet, with a force similar to that felt on Earth. The subjects perform an evaluation of the efficacy of the Skinsuit in reducing or preventing lower back pain and preventing spine elongation. They measure the gravitational load provided by Skinsuit and evaluate operational considerations, in particular hygiene, microbiology, comfort, thermoregulation, donning and doffing, impingement and range of motion. Results from this investigation will be used to prepare for long duration missions. Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparations: The EVA crew completed the following in preparation for the EXPRESS Pallet Controller Assembly (ExPCA) EVA currently planned for May 12. Unstowed hardware from the Airlock not needed for the EVA and prepared the Airlock to support EVA operations. Reviewed a briefing package including hardware overview/tool config, detailed timeline, and expected Caution and Warnings. Compound Specific Analyzer-Combustion (CSA-CP) Checkout: The crew changed the batteries in 2 newly resupplied CSA-CP units and updated internal clock settings. The units will remain deactivated with new batteries for at least 24 hours for sensors to re-establish bias voltages. Mobile Service System (MSS) Operations: Last Friday night, Robotics Ground Controllers powered up the MSS and used the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) Arm 2 to extract the S11A-C Remote Power Control Module (RPCM). They temporarily stowed this RPCM in the S14B-H empty slot. Next, controllers extracted the S14B-G RPCM and installed it in the in S11A-C slot. Finally the RPCM in the S14B-H slot (old S11A-C) was extracted and installed in the S14B-G slot and the MSS was configured for park. Cygnus Cargo Operations Status: The crew completed Message #2 over the weekend. Teams are working to complete Message #3 but at present, there are no cargo operations planned for this week.
