Finished a book that was mostly - but not always - as clever as it thought it was and I don't know if that's more or less tragic than a book simply not as clever as it thinks it is
#like enough of it landed that I can say I enjoyed it but if only the rest of it did too....#I think it falls into a common trap of 'longform satire/parody is easy to get wrong'#like a sketch is perfect length. If it's good it doesn't outstay its welcome and if it isn't it's over soon#(The Day Today IRA on helium bit I think is good; the John Majors punching the Queen isn't but it does finish on one hell of a high)#but longer - a Philomena Cunk episode or a whole book - increases the chances you get bits that are trying too hard just by the nature of#there's more space filled with things; and nothing is perfect#ANYWAY The House of Writers by M.J. Nicholls is the book#kind of humour made by someone who probably watched a lot of Monty Python in their formative years#written in 2016 which is a shame because I think the author would've absolutely torn booktok to shreds#would ultimately recommend!
