On ao3 it doesn't really matter as long as it's understandable because the tag wranglers will take care of it but yes on tumblr you are bypassing people's filters

I just saw a story on AO3 tagged "pet p!ay"

#idk why people always say this about ao3 tags!! people always get worked up about people tagging a thing wrong on ap3 #and then it's just something that'll get synned anyways #like yeah it's dumb and it'll take a bit for tag wranglers to get to it but it's probably fine #once you've posted a fic you can click on the tags to see what they're synned to #you can probably do that in drafts idk I don't draft stuff much #sometimes if my tag is very synonym-y I'll check back in a few days to make sure it got synned to the right thing #like I guess if we all used existing tags and their synonyms it would save work for the tag wranglers but like.......#wrangling tags is their job I've never seen any of them get mad about having to connect synonyms to tags before
