Honestly think Jessica Simpson's memoir should be required reading for Swifties (especially newer/younger ones) to understand what Taylor is driving at in so much of her music and how that kind of trauma has lasting and often lifelong impacts on a person even after they're out of the thick of it and healed.

for some strange reason I feel the need to apologize for Taylor's decision to mash these two up, as if I had any say in her doing this, so to all the Ivy and WCS stans I give you my condolences

I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing…and living to speak about it. Speak Now (2010) // Speak Now (Taylor's Version) (2023)

This is why I keep insisting that it's her best song. Everyone overlooks the way it reframes her entire discography. I think the way Aaron really keeps re-emphisizing it just goes to show how much it has shifted her writing going forward. (I say this with no hate to ATW, but I don't see the themes and concepts explored in ATW being the focal point of 1989). One of my English profs told me we find value in art that we keep coming back to and finding new ways to interpret. I have spent the last 2 years dissecting and analyzing WCS, and I still find new perspective and interpretations all the time. I was giving a friend my 3 hour breakdown where I go lyric by lyric and had to pause mid sentence to write down a new thought. It's a lyrical masterpiece, and I am so grateful everyday that she chose to release it and give us this piece of art.
I know that it's been said many times over the last two years, but I can't get over how brave it was of Taylor to write and release a song like Would've Could've Should've, and to share that experience with listeners. It again just makes me wonder if doing that opened up the floodgates and gave her permission to excise that wound in her music, because I feel like it directly tied into what Midnights eventually became and most certainly what TTPD was. It's one of the rawest, most honest, most vulnerable, most painful songs in her discography, and one that says so much even without necessarily giving specifics. But sharing that kind of trauma when she'd kept it so close to the vest for so long had to have been terrifying, and instead she's leaned into it more on this unprecedented and unmatched creative streak in the last few years, which seems to have afforded her the kind of freedom in her storytelling and in her life that seems to have paid off in unimaginable ways.
I don't mean to be speculative, because I know there are a multitude of reasons why she probably didn't touch upon it for so long. (Not fully understanding it until she was older, too difficult to write about, self-preservation, trying to find the words, etc.) But it just makes me wonder if the experience of that musical bloodletting unlocked something in her that made her feel safe enough to parse through everything else in much quicker fashion. The fact that she was writing TTPD as she was going through it (and going through something that had shades of the same feelings and manipulation and confusion) and released it so quickly just feels like a pipeline from what started in earnest on earlier albums and kind of hit the ground running in WCS. Like a direct before/after if you will idk.

I fight with you in my sleep, the wound won't close, I keep on waiting for a sign, I regret you all the time. If clarity's in death, then why won't this die?
