WTF is Ravenloft, even

I just read one of the miscellaneous Domains of Dread from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, and...

There's this one called Forlorn.

The darklord, whose name is Tristen BTW, was a dhampir who was adopted by druids until they realized he wanted blood, so they tried to kick him out. So he ate them all. But they spent so much time soaking in holy water that he died of food poisoning. Then he came back as a ghost. And then the next morning, he was a dhampir again. So now he's a cutie-patootie half-vampire inventor who works in his castle/factory, named Castle Tristenblack in French, with goblin servants, but he's also a wereghost that hates Spring like Cold Miser.

I just picked a name at complete random from the book.

And it's this. Evil Half-Vampire Wereghost Twink Santa. Named Tristen.

I’m confused, but I’m also delighted.
