It would require a calculus-like effort and a fuckton of analysis that is completely beyond my interest level, but you can zero in on the number by analyzing the number of works between some arbitrary minimum to qualify as "fic" (vs. art, podfic, etc. 100 words is a drabble, I'd start there.) I'd break it like this: 100-500 words 501-1000 words 1001-2000 words 2001-5000 words 5001-10000 words 10k-20k and so on.

Find the number of fics in each range, figure the average, plot on a graph. THEN... and this is where it gets very tedious very fast... in your 100-500 category, break it into 100 word chunks, so 100-200, 200-300, 300-400, etc. Same for the next category, every 200 for the 3rd category, etc. Average, plot on a graph. Observe trends.

After a while you can get a feel for how this goes, and break into smaller categories. You're going to get a lot of timeouts on the server, so the ideal way to calculate this would be to either ask AO3 nicely if they can calculate it by adding the results of all the word counts and dividing by the number of fics directly, or write a program that would make the search results from a variety of IP addresses, which might violate TOS? IDK? Computers are patient, you could theoretically find all the fics with 100 words, 101 words, 102 words, etc. and get a very precise idea. But to get a gist, calculus it, by dividing that curve into smaller and smaller parts and then seeing the number you're closing in on. Viable? IDK and IDC. Possible? Well, if someone wants to nerd it hard enough, it's nerdable.

Y'all, someone on Twitter just told me that fanfiction is rarely novel length.

They told ME that, when the context was “the best novel (a specific) someone knowledgeable has never read.”

Raise your hand if you have written fanfic longer than 60k. I’m raising all my limbs like a horse rolling on its back because I’ve written many things longer than 200k*.

(sort any popular fandom by bookmarks, define the word count and you’ll find many excellent 60k+ works that I can almost guarantee that editor hasn’t read, and in some, you’ll still be finding professional quality work 20 pages in. That’s 20 pages of ao3 search results. Not everything will be that good, but many will.)

*2 of them are not on ao3, and my series are often novels broken into parts, each “story” more a subsection of a larger plot than a truly separate entity because digital publishing is flexible that way.
