Hello, Aeon! For your fluffy IkeVamp requests... would you mind writing “I like the way your hand fits in mine” from the list, for Dazai, Arthur, or Comte? I’m sure I’ll love however you work it out! Thank you for opening these requests, and good luck with them! 🍀✨
Hello~! Thank you for requesting~! I actually ended up writing for all three, which is why it's taken me so long. ;-; Thank you for your patience~! I hope you like them! ;-;
I tried to do a seasonal thing... Arthur being Spring, Comte being Summer, and Dazai being Winter. I don't think I did it well, but I tried~!
@alby-rei who also requested this of Dazai
Word count: 1508
Characters: Dazai, Comte, Arthur, MC. With mentions of Leonardo and others.
Arthur:
The spring breeze tousled his hair a bit as he leaned against the wall of the store he was meeting his fiancee at. He’d known she would be late due to spring cleaning, but his excitement had gotten the best of him and he’d arrived before the agreed upon meeting time. The loneliness had been getting to him. He missed her laughter, her energy, everything about her. It wasn’t fair, he thought with a pout. Her time was currently shared amongst all of the residents, but he, greedy as he was, wanted her all to himself. If those thoughts ever reached her ears, she’d surely chastize him.
Lost in his thoughts, he almost missed the carriage as it pulled up before him. Moving away from the wall, his eyes searched the carriage as if willing her to appear. As her feet gingerly touched the ground, she searched for him, eyes lighting up upon spotting him, her steps quick as she ran towards him. But he swooped forward just as she tripped, his hand catching one of hers, his arm wrapped around her back, her face lifting from his chest to look up at the face of her savior.
His smile was a cheshire grin. He playfully pulled her closer, his hand not leaving hers. “What cheer~! Are you that excited to see me, luv~?” A scarlet hue colored her cheeks, she puffed up her cheeks in indignation.
“You know I am, Arthur.” Her honesty caught him off guard, causing him to blush as well. “After all, we haven’t seen much of each other lately…”
“You really know how to catch a man unawares, don’t you, bird?” Letting out a low chuckle, he reluctantly let go of her. “Shall we start our date~?”
Once she agreed, they began their walk towards the gardens. Arthur stopped in his tracks for a moment and turned to face her. “I’m quite worried you’ll trip again. Perhaps I should hold you hand, just in case?” His hopeful, yet playful expression caused her to laugh. She carefully placed her hand in his. “Ah. Much better. I- I quite like the way your hand fits in mine.”
Comte:
The music swayed through the room, a beautiful cascade on their ears. Comte de Saint Germain’s eyes focused on one woman tonight. He had no need to find his solace in other women, for she was what lulled him into security. However, she currently was in the arms of Leonardo who had whisked her away while Comte wasn’t looking. Leo was probably trying to get back at Le Comte for “convincing” him to come to this ball.
He watched for a moment more before deciding to strike. His shoes clicked across the ballroom floor as he walked up to his friend and his love. Each clack ringing loudly in their ears, Leonardo failing to hide his smug grin as Comte strode up to them. He smiled gracefully and extended his hand to her. “My apologies, ma cherie, it would seem I’ve left you alone too long. May I have this dance?” Both men exuded an overbearing confident aura that almost seemed like they were passive-aggressively fighting. The young woman shook her head, trying to hold back the laughter bubbling within her.
Concern that she wouldn’t take his hand bubbled in him, surrounded him. Afraid that she could possibly leave him for his friend. His eyes were glued to her hands as they slowly let go of Leonardo’s and were gently placed on his extended palm. A feeling of relief washed through him as he pulled her close, his other arm wrapping around her waist. He began to lead her in a graceful dance, bearing the weight for her so that she could glide across the dance floor without fear. His heart swelled at her brilliant smile. What he wouldn’t do to keep her smiling at him like that.
Shaking off his thoughts, he spun her around hoping a smile had stayed displayed on his face. Once her hand was back in his, he smiled at her and squeezed her hand. “I love the way your hand fits in mine, ma cherie.” A blush crossed her face and a soft chuckle let his throat. Out of a selfish desire to allow no one else to see her expression, he gently tugged her towards the balcony. He wanted to have her alone, if only for a moment. The warm summer air lazily whisked around them. As they reached the balcony, she gave him a quizzical look.
“I’m sorry, ma cherie, but I wanted a bit of your time to myself. Away from prying eyes.” He chuckled at the surprised look on her face. A tug of her hand in his, causing her to fall into his arms, he brushed his lips against hers. Not once did her hand leave his.
Dazai:
She didn’t know how she let Dazai convince her to go on a date in the middle of winter, but he had somehow managed to whisk her away from her duties. His sly smile and flamboyant nature could convince people of almost anything. She sighed inwardly at their current predicament. They were searching for shelter as the snow storm began. They wouldn’t be able to make it back to the mansion in time; it was already becoming hard to see. Dazai gave her a carefree smile and spoke in a sing-song tone. “The stables aren’t far from here, Toshiko-san~! We can take refuge there~!” Ah. That expression, that voice. She smiled to herself and shook her head.
“Alright, Dazai-san. Let's take shelter there until the storm ends.” She allowed him to lead her over to the stables, the snow starting to reach her ankles. The crunch crunch of snow under their feet was the only sound heard, all else was silent. Luckily they reached the stables before the snow got deep enough that opening the door would be difficult. Closing the door behind them, she began shivering. They hadn’t prepared for a snow storm.
Dazai’s eyes flicked around the room quickly, considering the options to keep her warm. He suddenly picked her up causing her to let out a squeal. Settling himself down next to Napoleon’s horse amongst the hay, he cradled her in his arms. “The best way to stay warm is to share company~! I’m sure the horse won’t mind keeping us warm, right, Toshiko-san~?” She was already beginning to feel the warmth from him and the horse and it began to ease her chill. She felt so warm and secure in his arms that her eyes began to close and she drifted off to sleep.
She felt a gentle hand brushing the hair out of her face and a sweet voice calling to her in an attempt to wake her from her slumber. “Umeko-san~? The snow has stopped for now~ If we don’t head back now, we may be stuck until morning.” Her eyes opened wide upon realizing she had fallen asleep, a deep blush settling across her face. Before she could apologize however, Dazai gently helped her up. “Off we go, Toshiko-san~!” He pulled her towards the doors again and she didn’t have the strength to argue. Once they got outside, she gasped as traveling through the snow would be difficult for them both. It had already gotten past her calves. Dazai held her hand tighter and pulled her behind him, allowing her to follow in his steps. She was surprised at the consideration he displayed to her.
The travel was slow going, but they managed to reach the mansion doors. As her boyfriend reached for the door and tried to push it open, they remembered what Theo had told them this morning in his fit of anger. Leonardo had decided to take the doors apart and reinstall them. Unfortunately, he had done so in order to mess with Le Comte. This meant the doors now opened outwards. The snow was too high and too thick for them to be able to pull the door open.
Her lover knew exactly how to deal with this situation, having a dislike for doors anyways. He led her to the window of the dining room where Sebastian just so happened to be cleaning and knocked on the window. The surprised look on Sebas’ face made (MC) giggle a little, while Dazai simply waved to him. Sebastian opened the window for them and Dazai climbed through first. Once he was inside, Dazai held his hand out to (MC) in an offer to assist her.
She clasped his hand and he gently helped her through the window. “Dazai-san, you’ve been holding my hand a lot today…” Squeezing his hand, she looked up at his face curiously. “Is there something wrong?”
He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it, his eyes staring into hers and a grin on his face. “I like the way your hand fits in mine~ So I’m not letting it go for the rest of the day~!” And so he tugged her away.

**Hi all, here is the next installment! I believe this is my longest, but I promise its so worth it! xoxo Ps. When I was writing, this is the Sebastian I pictured in my head! ;)
Chapter 20 Wildest Dreams
Out in an unknown place Kinda like that feels You came in my life and held me here Just in the nick of time When I lacked the will To keep on moving on You've been in my dreams, but from now Couldn't figure out the reasons I kept asking God why And now I'm receiving abundance of love And I get it, But never could imagine it, in my wildest dreams...
February 2011
Studio City, CA
“You didn’t have to dress up for me.” Sebastian greeted sarcastically the moment Camille opened the front door.
Taking the candy sucker out of her mouth, she glanced down at her attire. She was in a pair of blue sweat pants and an old high school t-shirt she wore only around the house and messy hair pulled up in a bun at the top of her head. Okay, so maybe she wasn’t dressed in the best clothes, but it was Sunday night. Her period had just started, she been cramping all of day and hadn’t felt like leaving the house. She glanced back up at Sebastian with a slight smirk. “I had plan on wearing my garter belt and lacy bra but I thought it would be too uncomfortable.” Shrugging innocently and putting the sucker back in her mouth for effect.
Sebastian’s mouth slacked for a split moment at her remark but he quickly recuperated, letting his eyes linger up and down her body.
“What?” She asked, trying to push that tingle between her legs away at the way he was staring her down.
He met her gaze and responded. “I just got an image of you wearing what you just described.” Licking his bottom lip almost sensually.
Damn it. He always had a comeback! Sneaky bastard. But instead Camille scowled, grabbing the door as if she was about to close it.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. You started it!” he quickly exclaimed with a chuckle. “Besides-are you really going to make me leave? I bring pizza!”
Of course she wasn’t really going to close the door on him, yet pretended to think about it. She raised an eyebrow. “Pepperoni?”
“Yes.”
“And pineapple?”
Sebastian scrunched up his nose. “Yes, you weirdo.”
Camille wrinkled her forehead at his remark. Apparently it was weird to him that she liked pineapple on pizza. Typically when they shared pizza, they always ordered half of what each wanted. Letting out an exasperated sigh, Camille took a step back gesturing for him to come inside. Sebastian grinned from ear to ear before closing the door behind him. Without saying another word, Camille moseyed toward the kitchen, Sebastian in toe.
“Have you eaten today?” he asked once they set foot into the kitchen. “Besides that sucker in your mouth.” He added smugly.
“Yesss.” Camille said with a small nod, throwing the now lonely stick in the trash can. “I’ve had cookies and chips as well.” She mumbled, then quickly asked. “Wine or beer?”
“Wines fine.” He answered, setting the pizza box on the countertop. “So you’ve had junk food?” he probed with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“Oh yeah, because pizza is just as healthy.” Camille mocked, taking two clean wine glasses out of the top cabinet, the bottle of red wine under her arm. She made her way toward him and the pizza, placing the wine and glasses down.
“I never said it was healthy.” Sebastian protested.
Camille quickly became distracted, her eyes landing on book on top of the pizza box. Tilting her head, she read the title out loud. “Picnic.”
“Huh? What?” Sebastian said, taking the cork out of the bottle.
“I was just reading the title of this book.”
“Oh yeah, I stopped by a book store for it.” He explained, pouring wine into each glass. “It’s a play actually, underneath is the script or screenplay my manager gave me earlier to look over. Apparently they are wanting to revive it on Broadway.”
“And Emily thought you would be a good fit for it?” Camille supplied with a warm smile, taking both glasses of wine and nodding toward the living for him to follow.
His cheeks had turned a shade of pink as he ran his fingers through his hair. “Yeah. I guess so.” Following after her, and putting the pizza box on the coffee table in front of them.
“Why Mr. Stan, I believe you’re blushing.” She teased, handing his wine over.
“Shut up. I’m not.” He muttered, carefully placing the book and script next to him before opening the pizza box and quickly shoving it into his mouth, chewing for a few moments.
Camille watched carefully, trying to read him. She couldn’t help but notice his hair had grown out a bit longer from the last time she had seen him, and the 5’ o’clock shadow beard he had going on at the moment was doing things to her. Damn, he really did have a beautiful face. She hadn’t necessarily forgotten how beautiful, but it had been almost a month a half since the last time they had seen each other and it was nice to have a refresher of it.
The holiday season had come and gone and the New Year had brought on a busy schedule for the both of them. Camille had been so swamped with work and the new project Liz had assigned her to, she had barely got a chance to truly enjoy the holidays, let alone really spend time with Sebastian. The same could be said about him of course, with auditions in New York and Los Angeles, he barely had time to breath. Even when he was in Los Angeles the last few times, they had only been able to see each other 3 times since Christmas. Which Camille had come to recognize was their new normal, seeing each other when they could, but keeping in contact through phone/text and even email.
Camille grinned widely before reaching for a slice of pizza. “Yes, you are…” she said in a song-song voice. Sebastian glowered, but didn’t say a word. “What part would you be playing?”
“I haven’t even audition yet.” He protested, taking a large bite of his slice.
She chewed a few times, then said in a knowing tone. “But when you do and you get the part, who would you be playing?”
Sebastian let out a small snort. “Your confidence in me is flattering.” He tried to joke. “They wouldn’t start production for another year or so.” He explained, leaning back against the comfortable cushion. “But the character I would be auditioning for is named Hal Carter.” Camille took another bite, waiting expectantly for him to continue. Sebastian squinted his eyes playfully at her. “You want me to elaborate?”
Camille only nodded.
Clearing his throat, he sat up straight again. “From what I’ve read so far- he is supposed to be sort of a drifter who isn’t sure of where he belongs and gets invited to a Labor Day picnic by a former college roommate…and I guess causes havoc in the lives of the people in the small town. Especially the women.” He stated, nervously running his fingers through one side of his hair.
He was adorable when he was unsure of things. She couldn’t help the smile that tugged on her lips, watching him. “Would I be invited to the grand opening? On Broadway?” she teased.
He tossed his head back and let out a laugh. “Darlin, I haven’t even auditioned yet. Nothing is definite. It’s just pure talk right now.”
“Don’t sell yourself short Sebby.” Camille stated, gently tapping his nose with her finger. “And don’t think that this will count as you taking me to a Broadway show.” She added, prompting that he still owed her a show.
Rolling his eyes, he took the last bite of his slice. “Hey, it’s not my fault you can’t say no to Liz. You had an opportunity to come see me last month but you turned it down.” He reminded with a shrug.
Camille glared and defended. “You know I couldn’t leave her hanging with all those new people!” Referring to last minute supervision job Liz had her do a few weeks ago, while Liz flew down to New Zealand to sign the rest of the legal paperwork for the new job they had just been contracted to do.
Sebastian chuckled lowly. “Dragoste, I know.” Trying to hold in his snickers. “I was just trying to get a rise out of you.” He confessed with a wink. “You think after all this time I couldn’t still do it...but here we are.”
Reaching for her glass of wine, Camille scowled. “You’re a pain.” Bringing the glass to her lips.
“Maybe so, but you wouldn’t want me any other way.”
“You think that wouldn’t you?” She snapped back with a smug look and taking another long swig of wine. Shaking his head, Sebastian snorted back his laugh reaching for his own glass. Camille felt a small smile tug on her lips at his laughter. Sigh. Fine. She couldn’t stay mad at him for too long. New York had been a perfect example of that.
For the next couple of hours they ate, drank and caught up on each other’s daily routine/life. Even though they had lunch the day before, they really did not get the chance to talk as they were surrounded by their friends. (Liz, Natalie, Charles and Will). Camille had suggested (mostly guilt tripped) him into coming over and hanging out before he flew back out Monday morning.
Resting the back of her head on the fluffy pillows, Camille listened to him talk about his last few auditions and meetings. She loved hearing him get all excited about his future endeavors when he spoke. His whole face would light up and his facial expressions gave away how much he loved what he did, regardless of the long trips.
“How’s the wedding planning going?” Sebastian asked, after he had finished telling her about his last audition.
Camille rolled her eyes and groaned before putting an arm over her face. “Don’t ask.”
“That bad?” he asked with a chuckle.
“The wedding is 3 weeks away and they are both driving me crazy! Which is why I suggested Sam drive up to San Francisco to keep an eye on things. Because they’ve been stressing me out with all their bickering. I know it’s just because they both want things to be perfect. And I get it. But being apart for a while before the wedding might be good for them.”
“I was wondering why Sam didn’t join us yesterday.”
Camille couldn’t help but let out an evil giggle, removing the arm from her face to look at him. “Because I sent her away. Well okay…I put the idea in their head.”
“Where’s Natalie right now?”
“She had to go and make sure the table settings are what they ordered. She should be back here in a bit.” Lifting her head up, she asked. “How’s Georgeta?” with a huge smile, changing the subject.
Sebastian grinned back. “Good. She just got back from a trip to Washington-which is a big deal for her because you know she isn’t much of a fan of traveling.” His eyes grew wide. “Which reminds me, she sent a box of German chocolate with me to give to you.” His eyebrows knitted together. “Shit, I thought I brought it in with me…” he mused. “I must have left it in the car.” Pushing himself up from couch. “I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.” Camille said after him, as he made his way to the front door. Following his lead, she stood up and reached for the empty pizza box, and almost empty wine bottle. She turned in the direction of the kitchen then abruptly stopped, pressing her lips together to reach back out for the book and script Sebastian had left on the couch. She couldn’t help it-she was curious and also had a feeling Sebastian was not sharing the whole story with her.
She reached for Tupperware in one of the cabinets and placed the remaining couple of pieces of pizza in them, before sticking it in the fridge. Once she had finished, her fingers reached for the small paperback book and began to skim through it, reading a few couple of pages. After a few moments, she placed the book down and grasped the script book, flipping through it as well.
“Did you drink the rest of the wine?” she heard Sebastian asked teasingly, making her jump a bit at the sound of his voice.
With the script still in hand, Camille looked over her shoulder, she must have been so enthralled in reading because Sebastian was walking toward her with both wine glasses in hand. She didn’t even hear him walk back inside.
“What did you do?” He asked cautiously.
Camille blinked innocently. “What do you mean?”
Pointing one finger accusingly he answered. “You’re eyes always get all big when you’re up to something.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Turning her attention back the script. “Although you could have mentioned that the part you’re going to be playing is kind of the lead.” She accused nonchalantly, flipping through it once again. “This would be so great!” She added excitedly.
Sebastian sat the empty glasses on the counter, leaning his whole body close to her. “I should just make you my publicist with all this hype you’re giving me.”
“I would make an awesome publicist-thank you very much.”
“It doesn’t pay too well.” Sebastian deadpanned, at the same time placing the box of German chocolate in front of her face. Grinning from ear to ear. “But I do provide chocolate.” He added quickly, shaking the box for effect.
“Your mom is too sweet.” Camille said, her heart warming up at how thoughtful Georgeta was with her.
“She seems to like you.” Sebastian answered with a shrug. “I don’t know why...” he muttered, looking innocently at her.
“Hmm, probably because I have to deal with the likings of you.” Camille sassed back, reaching out for the box but Sebastian was quicker and moved it from her reach. “Sebastian...!” she whined.
“You’re mean.” He said, feigning a look of hurt.
“Maybe so, but you wouldn’t want me any other way.” Mockingly repeating the words from earlier back to him.
Sebastian stuck his tongue out, but opened the box of chocolate and asked instead. “So- what do you think of the play?” Offering her a piece of chocolate.
“From what I’ve what I was able to read?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s a solid story. And Hal’s character would be perfect for you.” Taking a piece of chocolate into her mouth before sitting down on the bar stool closest to the middle kitchen island.
“Emily wants me to find a few scenes I like so I can use them for my audition.” He explained, taking another piece of chocolate into his mouth. “Was there anything in there that caught your eye?” he asked.
Camille glanced through a couple of pages, while her other free hand reached blindly for another piece of the delicious chocolate. “Hmm. I did see a few…” she mused, trying to find it again. After a few moments of silence, she gasped unexpectedly.
“What?” Sebastian said in an alarmed voice, pouring the rest of the wine for each of them.
“I can run lines with you!” She answered a little too excitedly, her face beaming.
He scrunched up his nose. “You want to run lines with me?” he repeated slowly.
“Sure, why not?” she said with a light shrug. Sebastian opened his mouth, then quickly snapped it shut again as if trying to decide what to say. “I mean if you want to…” Camille added, all of sudden feeling a bit self-conscious.
“No-I mean…yeah we can.” Rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
“But…?” Camille pushed.
Sebastian cleared his throat. “I guess I’m just a bit nervous, since we’ve never done that before.”
Camille put two and two together. “Sebastian-did you forget that we worked together and that I’ve seen you act on a set of a movie before?” And at the same time she pulled her hair out of the bun, it was starting to give her a headache.
“Well yeah-but that was after I had gotten the part and stuff.” He said lamely. They didn’t say anything for a few seconds, and Camille watched him carefully as he tried to process. He finally spoke. “But I guess it would be good to have someone to bounce the lines off of. Especially since I’ll be meeting with them this coming Tuesday.” He grinned up at her. “Okay, Ms. Broadway- which scene should we do first?” he asked jokingly.
They made their way back toward the living room and for the next 30 minutes or so, they found a few scenes they both thought would be great for him to try. Camille found herself completely enamored by him as they began to read some of the scenes out loud. While she had to keep looking down at her lines (while taking sips of wine in between of course) Sebastian seemed to pick up on Hal’s lines pretty quickly.
He really was something to watch. This was his craft and it only made Camille admire him even more.
“Camille?”
She blinked out of her thoughts. “Huh? What?”
He chuckled. “Where you go? It’s your line.” Taking his own sip of wine.
Where she go? Oh she was just drooling over him that’s all. Seeing him this way made him even more attractive. Damn it.
“S-sorry.” She stammered. Hoping he hadn’t caught on. “Um where were we?” She asked clearing her throat nervously.
“Well Madge,” Sebastian started referring to her as one of the character of the play. “I just finished telling you I was a bum.” He said with a shy smile.
Camille quickly looked down at the script and fed him the next line. This went on for the next few minutes. And again she found herself in awe on how quick he could turn it on and not be Sebastian for a part. But she pushed through and watched him give his next line:
Hal: Baby, are you cryin?
Madge: Just a little.
Hal: Why?
Madge: I don’t know.
Hal: You almost got me doing it.
Madge: It’s not because I’m unhappy, really.
Camille took the moment to reach back out and take the last bit of wine down. She glanced back at him and felt the air almost leave her lungs at how intently he was looking back at her. He continued with his next line:
Hal: Same here, I’m not unhappy.
Madge: It’s just that-
Hal: Well...kiss me goodnight anyway, will you?
Camille felt her heart began to race faster all of a sudden. She licked her bottom lip and said the next line:
Madge: If you promise not to hold me?
Sebastian had stepped closer now, hands behind his back. He continued:
Hal: Yeah, I promise. I’ll keep my hands at my side. See?
Camille swallowed the lump in her throat. Unsure if she could speak. Taking in a large breath, she said the next line:
Madge: Now, I’ll kiss you.
She involuntarily leaned forward, and he did the same.
“What’s next?” Sebastian whispered.
She licked her bottom lip nervously trying to find the words. The room had also gotten a few degrees hotter. “Madge is supposed to kiss Hal…” She trailed off.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” She nodded blankly in agreement, unable to make any movement. She wasn't sure of what she was doing, but she knew she wasn't ready for this little moment to end. It was like a magnetic pull. A magnetic pull she had not been able to understand after all these months. The line once again a blur. Any panic she had felt earlier about them evaporated as he leaned in closer. He seemed to sense it too. It was just them now. She didn't care about anything else at that moment.
Camille froze as his mouth touched hers. Her chin jerked up and her eyes met his. The realization of what was about to happen, sinking in. “You promised to keep your hands next to you.” She reminded, trying to keep the mood light. "I mean-" she stopped herself.
“Hal promised that.” Sebastian answered back not breaking his gaze. She braced herself, as she waited for him to pull away and tell her it was a mistake. “Me on the other hand…”
What she got was slow and sneaky. His lips were smooth and cool. Despite being unhurried, there was nothing tentative about the way he angled his mouth over hers, then slid his tongue inside before she had a chance to change her mind. There was just a second, when Camille thought he would stop if she told him to. But the unbelievable sensuality of his kiss made her realize that wasn't what she wanted. Instead she wrapped her arms around his neck and tugged him back down with her, his fingers gripped one side of her hip, his tongue in her mouth, her insides melting like chocolate.
After several heart-racing moments he broke his lip lock, leaving Camille limp and dizzy. She blinked him back into focus, as the reality of what just happen hit the pit of her stomach. But unlike before when the possibility or thought of kissing him scared her, this time it didn't bring any anxiety or panic, instead she felt relatively calm. “You didn’t keep your promise." she murmured jokingly.
“I didn’t make that promise.” Sebastian said hoarsely.
Camille bit on her top lip, the feel of his lips still making her mouth tingle. Her mind was still whirling at what just happened. “That….was-was-.” unable to put sentences together.
“Overdue?” Sebastian offered with a weak smile, pressing his forehead against hers. She shivered as his fingers moved underneath her oversize shirt, his fingertips grazing her bare skin.
"Completely." she whispered, unwrapping her arms from around his neck.
Sebastian chuckled. "Yeah." He tunneled his fingers through her loose curls, drawing her face up, bringing her flush against his body. Body stiff, she lifted her head, her eyes shadowed by her long lashes. "Is this okay though?" he asked in an almost panicked voice.
Nicole lips parted and her eyes fluttered closed, nodding. “Y-yeah…yes…” she breathed.
“Okay, I just don’t want to push you into anything you don’t want-.”
“Sebastian.” Camille interrupted.
“Hmm?”
“Shut up and kiss me.” She demanded softly.
Sebastian closed the gap, kissing her once again. She melted into his arms and clanged to him, her breasts pressed against his chest, her body molding against his as she allowed his invasion. His mouth moved over hers and he caught her lower lip, tasting the inside of her mouth with the tip of his tongue. Camille moved against him, her hands coming up to comb through his hair as she nipped his upper lip between her teeth, then laved the sting with her tongue. He groaned in appreciation.
The simple act of kissing Sebastian was stunningly arousing, but then again Camille figured it would be. She didn't want to stop. They hadn't planned on doing this. They were only supposed to be reading lines. She could have pulled away, but the thought had lasted only a split second. And instead of showing she was in control he now had her wrapped in his arms and she was kissing him back and demanding more.
She made an aggressive sound in the back of her throat as she arched her soft body full against him and slanted her mouth against his, changing the tempo and the rhythm of the kiss. She felt the warm caress of his palm against her face as he brushed her cheek with his hand. His touch more intimate than the kiss. Holding her firmly against him, he tangled his fingers in her hair again, capturing her moan on his tongue.
Somehow, someway they had moved and now Camille felt the back of her legs touch what she assumed was the side of the couch. As if struggling for control, Sebastian gently pulled away from her. Her eyes were closed. She didn’t want this to end. She needed more of his kisses. They were breathing new life into her.
He said her name. It sounded so far away. She shivered when his hands rubbed her arms up and down. She opened her eyes, still unfocused.
“God, your lips...” Sebastian literally groaned.
“Hmm? What?”
“So swollen baby.”
A small whine left her mouth, but answered. “It’s your fault.”
“I know and I’m here for it.” Sebastian uttered. “So fucking here for it...” trailing off and kissing her again.
Camille thanked the clouds above at how in sync they were. Because just like her, he seemed to not want to rush it, because they knew the moment that happened something would trigger them back to reality. And she didn’t want to go there just yet. So instead he employed a good old fashioned make-out session, no rushing, no groping, just kissing slow and easy, like when they were teenagers and kissing was enough to satisfy.
It was almost as they were floating, but they managed to push themselves unto the couch behind them. She relaxed beneath him.
“Sebastian…” she whispered against his mouth. Her breathing soft and languid.
“Shh…” Sebastian hushed her, as he ran his tongue across her bottom lip again. Camille moaned and he squeezed her waist as if letting her know he enjoyed the sound she made. It was a tiny sigh, a release, a letting go. She realized that’s what she wanted, what they both needed. No reality. Just each other and pleasure, for a short space of time.
He shifted slightly, falling back against the plush pillow his arm sliding down and wrapping loosely around her waist and pulling her on top of him. Somehow Camille twisted, and straddled him. He dropped his arm from around her waist, and she threaded her fingers through his, carrying his hands up over his head. Her eyes full of lust.
“Why did we wait so long to do this?” He managed to ask with a small smile.
“Because we’re stupid, stupid people.” Camille quickly answered, lowering her head to graze her lips against his again.
Soft. Slow. Unbearably sweet.
“So unbelievably stupid.” Sebastian repeated breaking briefly from her mouth to place a strand of loose hair behind her ear.
“So, so stupid.” She reiterated in whisper. Her lips twitched. Closing the gap, she kissed the corner of his mouth, his nose, his cheek, his jaw, then trailed her lips back to his. He closed his eyes as her tongue, warm and wet, tangled with his, explored leisurely. Camille could feel the beating of his heart as her kisses took a hold of something deep. It might have been 5, 10 or even an hour -she wasn’t sure- all she was sure of was how wonderful it was for his mouth and tongue to explore hers. She heard herself moan in pleasure when he moved slightly beneath her.
“Camille?!”
Suddenly her eyes flew open at the sound of her name and broke the kiss. It was Natalie.
“Who’s car is that parked in the driveway?” Her younger sister called out. “Oh wait! Its Sebastian’s rental isn’t it? I forgot he was coming over!”
“Oh my god!” She hissed, rolling off him as fast as she could.
“Camille,” Sebastian started with laugh, pushing himself up in sitting position.
“If she catches us, we will never hear the end of it.” Camille explained, stumbling to stand up. Reality settling back in. But before she could say or stand, she found herself tripping literally on her own feet, coming back down, thankfully the couch cushions broke her fall.
“Holy shit! Are you okay?” Sebastian exclaimed, quickly standing up and reaching down his hand for her to grab.
With one elbow resting on the cushion, Camille looked up at him, and burst into a fit of giggles at how silly she probably looked. “Yes.” She answered him, tossing her head back and cackled at herself. “Stupid couch got in my way.” Taking the hand he offered, still giggling. Sebastian snorted back his laugh as well.
“What the hell? What are you doing on the floor?” Natalie demanded.
Sebastian used his strength and pulled her up to her feet. They locked eyes and they only brought another fit of giggles from the both of them. Only this would happen to her.
“Camille decided to make out with the couch.” Sebastian answered after his laughter subsided.
Her jaw dropped at his response, letting go of his hand. She scowled. Sebastian only smirked back.
“Did you trip on your own two feet?” Natalie guessed.
“Noooo.” Camille responded annoyingly.
At the same time her sister made her way toward Sebastian. She leaned in and pecked him on the cheek as a hello. In the past few months, Natalie, along with Samantha had grown to care for Sebastian and consider him their friend as well.
Natalie sat down on the couch they had just finished making out on, leaning back against the cushion to slip off her shoes. She glanced around the room and looked back at her older sister with a judgmental eye. “No wonder you were on the ground, you’ve been drinking wine.”
By this time Sebastian had sat back down next to Natalie, while Camille found herself on the opposite couch across from them.
“I wasn’t drinking it alone.” Looking pointedly at Sebastian.
“Hey, I wasn’t the one in eye level with cushions.”
Camille made a mocking face in his direction and Sebastian only smiled innocently back. She narrowed her eyes, but didn’t respond. She knew he was just acting like a little shit to see what kind of reaction she would have.
Hmmph. Just because he’s a good kisser doesn’t mean he still isn’t a little asshole. She thought to herself.
Holy shit.
She made out with Sebastian Stan. After all most 10 plus months of them flirting/teasing back and forth, they finally shared a kiss. Or lots of kisses if you wanted to get technical about it. They fully made out. Holy shit. Of course it had been better than she expected. She must have been so lost in thought because she when blinked back to the present, she found Sebastian eyeing her from the corner of his eye while half paying attention to Natalie talking animatedly.
Camille looked past him, her eyes widening at the realization that the script and book were on the floor next to Sebastian. She didn’t remember doing that. Natalie was so enthralled in telling Sebastian all about the wedding that she didn’t notice when Camille got up to pick up the book and script. But Sebastian did and gave her a look that clearly asked: what are you doing? Tossing the books gently to the ottoman behind her, Camille locked eyes with him. She couldn’t help but get the butterflies in her stomach at the sight of him. Why did he have to be so handsome? And sexy. Fuck. He wasn’t even trying.
“Alright you two-what the hell is going on?” Camille heard Natalie asked suspiciously.
Breaking their gaze, they looked back her younger sister, who was eyeing at them as if they were criminals.
Sebastian sighed loudly, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. “Fine, you caught us.” If looks could kill he would be dead right now. But Sebastian wasn’t looking at her, instead he put his attention on Natalie. “I was trying to get Camille’s help in what to get you and Sam as a wedding present. And I didn’t want her to tell you, because you two are my friends now and I didn’t want you all to think I wasn’t trying…” he trailed off.
By then Camille had miraculously planted herself back on the other end of the couch and just listened. Okay, so maybe he wasn’t dead just yet.
“You don’t have to get us anything. And I thought it had something to do with Cam and her trip.” Natalie responded accepting Sebastian’s story.
Camille purses her lips together at Natalie’s statement.
Natalie continued. “But you’re still coming right?”
“Yes, of course.” He answered with a nod and at the same trying to catch Camille’s gaze.
“Okay, good.” She said with a relieved smile. “Are you bringing a plus one?”
“I thought he was going to be my plus one?” Camille interjected.
“Well I wasn’t sure since you said Liz had asked if you could leave sooner. Like the day of the wedding. So I just wanted to make sure-.”
Camille watched Sebastian softly place one hand over Natalie’s. “Breath sweetheart.” He ordered with a smile.
Camille’s heart warmed up at his sweet gesture.
Doing what Sebastian asked, Natalie sucked in a large breath and let it out before mumbling. “Sorry.”
“Nat, esta bien.” Camille reassured in Spanish. “I think its okay to feel this way right before your wedding. In fact I would be worried if you didn’t.” Blindly reaching for the plush pillow behind her and bringing it up to her chest. “Don’t worry, I talked to Liz, we were able to rearrange the schedule. I leave 2 days after the wedding. I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
Camille could feel Sebastian’s gaze on her. “Two days after the wedding?” He repeated.
“You didn’t tell him?”
Camille gritted her teeth. “I haven’t had the chance...”
Which was the truth. She had planned on sharing the piece of information with him, but then they started eating and talking and kissing, that she got distracted and forgot.
“What happened to the end of the month?” Sebastian asked with a wrinkle of his nose.
Natalie snorted, Camille glowered back at her sister. “What?” She said innocently.
“Liz just told me about it 2 days ago.” She explained. Unsure of what else to say.
“Hence why I was freaking out.” Natalie added with a small frown.
“I was going to tell you.” Camille added quickly. “But then we started eating and talking and -.” Then stopped herself.
“I know.” Sebastian answered with a knowing smile. “The life of this business. It’s okay dragoste.” Sebastian stated with a sly smile, licking his bottom lip in the process.
Camille suppressed the whimper from her lips at his action.
Ten months. That’s how long she was going to be gone for her next job. Ten months in New Zealand. Two months ago, the idea of this trip sounded like a dream. And now? It sounded like the worst idea ever.
Whoa.
She needed to calm down. It had just been a few kisses. Nothing more.
Camille watched them from the corner of her eye as they continued talking. How was he so calm? Because her mind just kept replaying what happened on that couch. The way he smelled and felt. The feel of his tongue tracing the inside of her mouth.
Maybe it wasn’t a big deal for him. A kiss was just a kiss. Right? If that was the case then why were her lips still tingling? Why did she have the urge to do it again?
“Cam? Camille?”
She blinked out of her fantasy and found Sebastian and Natalie on their feet. “Yeah?” Camille asked, pretending she hadn’t just gazed off.
“Sebastian said he has to get going.”
“You do?” She asked stupidly.
“It’s almost midnight.” Natalie answered. “And he has to be at the airport at 430 in the morning.”
Shit was it really that late already? The night felt like it had just gotten started. “You really need to start getting later flights.” Camille blurted out jokingly, pushing the dream of kissing him out of her thoughts.
“I’ll make sure to bring that up to Emily.” Sebastian said before giving Natalie a warm hug.
“I’ll see you in a few weeks.” Natalie stated, letting go of him in the process.
Camille nervously rubbed both of her arms. “I’ll walk you out.” Standing up, heartbeat speeding up at the realization they were going to be alone again.
“Okay.” Sebastian answered with a smile before saying goodbye to Natalie one more time.
Camille led the way, taking them through the garage. She was so lost in her own thoughts she didn’t realize the garage door was open, until she tried to push the opener. “Oh geez Camille.” She uttered to herself, walking toward Sebastian’s rental. Not sure of what to do next, she halted by the passenger door and turned to him, a slight shiver running through her when the cold breeze hit her body. He was looking at her with amusement. Her cheeks felt hot now. “What?” she snapped, shifting from one foot to the other.
Smirking, Sebastian took a step closer. “Anyone ever tell you how cute you are when you’re nervous?”
Camille tilted her head to one side with a raised eyebrow, pretending his closeness did not affect her in any way. What was supposed to be their next step in all of this? Was there a next step? All this time she had been so focused on what it would be like to be in his arms that she hadn’t thought about the ‘what next’? Had he?
She jumped a bit when she felt a drop of water on her forehead. She felt it again. She shouldn’t be surprised. It was February in California after all. It had been raining most of the week. Gazing up to the dark sky she said. “You should probably get going before it really starts to come down.”
But Sebastian had other thoughts, he pressed against her, her body trapped against the passenger door. “We haven’t said bye yet.” He reminded in a low voice.
Camille swallowed the lump before looking up at him through her lashes. “We haven’t?”
“No.”
But before either one could speak up, more drops of water began to hit them. Sebastian swiftly opened the passenger door, gesturing for her to get in. Camille wasn’t sure of what do to, but found herself sliding into the car and watched him run to the driver’s side. The moment he shut the door, the rain really started to come down.
They locked eyes before laughing. “That was close.” Camille observed, leaning back.
“So what’s the plan after the wedding now that you have to leave early?” Sebastian asked, his head pressed against the seat, but eyes on her.
“I’m not sure yet.” She confessed looking straight ahead and playing with her necklace around her neck. In fact she hadn’t taken the pendant off since he had given it to her back in October. He only nodded. Camille quickly turned her attention to him. “I was going to tell you.” She repeated. “But I’m also still trying to digest it.” She finished with a small shrug.
“That’s a long time to be gone.” He agreed.
“Hmm, yeah.” Was all Camille’s mouth could say, eyes shut.
“You nervous?”
“I am that transparent?” She asked with a short laugh, opening her eyes to find Sebastian’s eyes lingering down to her lips. She fought the urge to lean in and kiss him.
He moved his gaze away from her mouth, and back to her eyes. Her heart started to pound faster, harder, when he leaned over the console. “I just know you better than you think.” He said with a light smirk, cupping her cheek with one hand. “And I also know you’ve probably obsessed about it, wondering if you’re going to do a good job...”
Camille’s gaze never wavered as he spoke. He was right. She was ridiculously nervous about this job. This was her first job without Liz as her safety net. Meaning she was going to be in charge of the other makeup artist /crew that were coming with her on this long job.
“The answer is yes Camille. You’re going to do an awesome job. You’re going to kick ass.” He finished with a warm smile.
“Thanks for the boost of confidence.” Returning the smile.
“Always dragoste.” Sebastian responded with a wink.
She closed her eyes and turned her nose and mouth toward his hand. She heard him clear his throat. “But I don’t want to talk about that anymore.” Pressing her lips into the moist hollow of his hand.
“O-oh no?”
“No.” Her voice was hoarse, quiet. Intense.
“Then what do you want to talk about?” He licked his lips and dropped his hand. She didn’t want him to stay away any longer. She needed to feel his lips against hers.
“About-about...” She stammered opening her eye as Sebastian closed in on her, his nose inches from hers, his mouth a hairbreadth away. She heard him suck in his breath in anticipation.
“About what baby?” he asked but kissed the corner of her mouth, in such a light teasing touched that she shivered. He stared hard, and Camille became overwhelmed with feelings she couldn’t begin to explain. All she knew was that she needed to have him near, needed him to kiss her, hold her, touch her. His lips hovered above hers, his nose alongside hers.
“I wasn’t sure if you wanted to-.” “Kiss you?” he answered without another second thought he kissed her, a honest to goodness, lips everywhere, tongue-teasing kiss. A sigh escaped from her. She dipped her head back and opened her mouth as she let Sebastian marveled at the taste and texture of her, so soft, so wet.
“Mmmm.” she murmured when his lips moved to her jaw, her neck. But he cut off her moan with another kiss that left her clinging to him like a lifesaver.
“Kissing you again was all I could think of doing when we were in there.” He almost growled against her mouth.
Camille could hear the excited little rush of both their breaths, the pants, the moans, the shift from casual exploration to urgent questing.
“Really?” She whined, her heart feeling lighter at his confession.
“God yes, baby.” His lips sliding back down to the hollow of her neck. Camille felt the goose bumps all the way down to her toes. She felt his warm lips suck gently on her skin and she groaned loudly. Thankful they were confined in the car and no one could hear them. “Fuck.” He said in a hot whisper.
They were close, but not close enough, she wanted to reach out and touch all of him. Even though her thoughts were consumed with the touch of his mouth Camille seemed to once again pick up on his thoughts as he bit gently on her neck, because she crawled over the console and into his lap, her knees sunk into the leather on either side his hips, and gasped softly when she felt the hard and strained at the fly of his jeans.
He brought his hands up and cupped her face between them, his lips back on hers. Sebastian pushed his tongue between her lips again and met the wet heat of her mouth as she sighed with pleasure.
“You could’ve fooled me.” Camille murmured against his mouth.
He broke from her lips and dropped one hand, as the other stroked one side of her cheek with the knuckles. Sebastian chuckled lightly and pressed his forehead to hers. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.” Camille breathed, shifting a bit in his lap. She heard a grunt leave his lips. A small smile tugged on her lips when it registered she was sitting on Sebastian’s lap. She wasn’t sure it how it happened. But it just felt good to do.
“What’s the smirk for?”
“Nothing...it just hit me that I’m sitting on your lap and...” she confessed with a humorous laugh.
“Were making out?” He supplied with his own smirk.
She nodded. “Y-yess.” She moaned in response. His lips latched back on to the hollow of her neck and Camille wrapped her arms around his neck, as his hands slid up her back, making her whole body shiver. She could not even begin to describe how glorious this felt. He made her feel wanted. And she hadn’t felt that way in a very long time. She tossed her head back as his lips continued to torture her neck.
“Mmmm, is this your sweet spot?” Sebastian mused against her skin. Camille shifted once again and an almost like growl left his lips.
“Maybe...” Camille answered as coyly as possible, but it was hard to think straight at the moment. The bastard had found her spot.
He broke from her neck and lifted his head, a satisfied look in his eyes. “You know, you can be a real brat when you want.”
She playfully glared down at him through her lashes. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t-.”
“Camille?”
“What?” She snapped, her fingers caressing the back of his neck.
“Shut up, so I can continue kissing you.” Sebastian ordered. And before she could say anything else he did just that, hard. She felt him smile against her lips when he heard her cry out in pleasure. She didn’t argue with him, instead let his lips do the talking.
After a few minutes, Sebastian broke their kiss and said. “I should probably get going.” But his hands roamed up and down her spine.
“Mmmkay.” Was Camille’s only response as she nipped at his lower lip.
He groaned. “Jesus, Camille you aren’t making this easy for me.”
“I’m sorry.”
He laughed. “We both know you aren’t.” Squeezing her waist before pulling her closer to him.
“You’re right, I’m not.” She said with a giggle.
“Come here.” he instructed softly, and covered her mouth with his again, one hand tugging behind her neck. He licked at her lips and teased his tongue into her until they both moaned in pleasure. Camille could not remember the last time she had a good full blown make out session. She forgotten how nice it was to just kiss someone.
“Didn’t you just say you had to leave?” She asked between kisses. He responded with a grunt. A grunt that turned into a low moan when Camille massaged his scalp leisurely.
“I’m trying.” Sebastian said with a laugh, his large hands still caressed her back. “But this is so much more fun.” His lips trailing down her jaw.
Camille moaned response for what felt the hundredth time. For the next few minutes their mouths continued to explore each other. A small whine left her mouth when Sebastian ran his fingers through her curls. Camille was so engrossed in the moment she had managed to push aside away all the sounds surrounding them. But she quickly opened her eyes when she heard a loud slam outside of the car. She broke from his lips. “What was that?” She hissed.
“It was just a car door closing.” Sebastian answered, pushing her hair to one side of her neck.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” Sebastian said with a chuckle before pressing a light kiss behind her ear. He nuzzled his nose into the hollow of her neck. She heard him grumble when he inhaled her scent. “God, you smell so good.”
Camille didn’t know how to answer that. Instead she ran her fingers up and down his shoulders and arms and smiled warmly down at him. “As much as I want to continue this, you should get going.” She managed to say. “Don’t want you to over sleep.”
Sebastian glared up at her. “It happened one time!” He protested, but continued to stroke her back.
She stifled her giggles, burying her face into his neck. She was referring to back in December when he missed his flight home because he overslept. He had to be on standby until a flight opened up. Camille gasped in surprise, lifting her head up when she felt his fingers start to tickle her sides. “Sebastian!” She said through fits of laughter. “Stop!”
“That’s what you get for making fun of me.”
She dropped her arms from around his neck and shoulders and grasped his hands in each of hers. “Okay, okay! Stop!” She pleaded. “You know I don’t like being tickled.”
Sebastian stopped long enough to tangle his fingers with hers and bringing her knuckles up to his mouth. “I need to go.” He stated kissing her knuckles softly.
“You’ve been saying that for the past 10 minutes.” Camille reminded with a teasing smile.
“I know.”
She knew there was no more staling. He had to go. He needed to get some sleep before his flight. She had the urge to tell him to stay with her, but then she remembered her sister was there. Instead she leaned in and brushed her lips softly against his. “Start the car.” She ordered as sternly as possible. She could get use to kissing him like this all the time.
“I’ll see you a few weeks?” He asked, placing a strand of lose hair behind her ear. Camille only nodded. “I’m still your plus one right?”
“Yes. You can’t back out.” She ordered with a pretend scowl before pushing the door open. “You’re my scapegoat when Mi Tias start asking why I haven’t set a wedding date.”
“I’m glad I can help.” Sebastian said sarcastically. Camille was about to shift herself off his lap when he wrapped one arm around her waist. “Wait.” He started.
“What is it-.” But stopped talking when his lips touched hers again. She literally felt like she was melting against him.
After a few moments, Sebastian broke the kiss, a huge grin on his face. “Just one more for the road.”
Pretending it didn’t phase her, Camille slid off his lap, feet hitting the pavement. The grin he had a few moments ago disappeared and it was replaced with a frown when she shut the door with him still in the car. He turned the engine on and rolled down the window.
“Don’t pout at me.” Camille instructed, trying her best to keep her emotions in check. That only made him frown even more. “Stop.” She demanded with a small laugh, resting an elbow on the opened window. He could be such a baby sometimes. Yet, Camille knew it was his way of trying to lighten their goodbye.
“I can’t help if my mouth has a mind of its own.” He answered with a wiggle of his eyebrows. Camille rolled her eyes, ready to take a step back, but stopped when he placed one hand over hers. She looked expectantly at him. “Just so you know-if I had it my way....I wouldn’t be leaving right now. Especially after-.”
“I know.” Pushing herself on her tiptoes she leaned and pressed a sweet kiss to his cheek as reassurance. Then gathering whatever strength she had, she pulled away from him. “Text me when you land?” He nodded. Camille felt the drops of water again and quickly made her way to the open garage.
Sebastian waved before backing out of the driveway. Camille waved back with one hand, while the other touched her mouth. Hoping to keep the feel of his lips on her for as long as she could. She waited a few more moments to head back inside, trying to digest the last few hours.
Things were about to change. She was sure of it. How? She had no fucking clue. She must have been so lost in thought, she hadn’t realized she walked back into the house. Regardless of what happened next, Camille felt like she was floating on a fluffy cloud at the moment.
“I thought maybe you decided to go with him.” Natalie teased, sitting on a bar stool in the kitchen, eating leftover Thai food.
“Huh?” Camille said absently. “No.”
“What were you doing? Making out?”
At those words, Camille jerked her attention to her younger sister. “You were spying?!”
Natalie’s jaw dropped and then quickly jumped out of the bar stool. “Oh my god! No! I was just joking! But it finally happened?” She squealed.
God damn. Her sister was just being a smart ass! Camille opened her mouth to protest, but Natalie was already shaking her head and pointing a finger at her.
“Uh uh, don’t even try to deny it. You just spilled on yourself. I want all the details! Can I say it’s about damn time. You two have been playing this game for too long.”
Camille met her sister’s gaze, a small smile tugged on her face despite trying to play it cool. She had to share this with someone. And who better than her sister? Besides she needed to try and figure out what all this meant.
“Is he a good kisser?”
Leaning against the stainless steel refrigerator, Camille covered her face with both hands, trying to hide the stupid smile. She shook her head, unsure of what to say. Because she couldn’t put into words what it was like to kiss Sebastian. What she knew was that for the first time in months, she didn’t feel as if there was a dark cloud above her.
Natalie squealed again. “Holy shit, that good?”
Camille moves her hands away from her face, smiling like an idiot at Natalie. Her sister made her way to Camille, grasping her wrist. “I want to know everything. Don’t leave anything out!” Leading her to the living room.

Your Light in the Mist - Chapter 34
We spent the remainder of our summer and early fall in London living like normal people and doing normal things. I’d get up and head into work each morning, my main focus having shifted to overseeing Trudy’s progress on the app and delving into creating pages on the Prosper site for all our clients, while Tom kept his social media activity at the level we’d agreed upon, in conjunction with working out, running lines for Skull Island, meeting with BFI and UNICEF, as well as reading the rest of the Vampire Chronicles.
Each night, we’d either eat in or go out to one of Tom’s favorite spots for dinner, and each weekend he’d take me to what he considered a ‘cannot be missed’ landmark or locale. Sundays were usually cinema day, my personal favorites we viewed being The Man From U. N. C. L. E. and American Ultra. Tom was fond of Before We Go, but I pointed out that he had to like it otherwise Captain America would kick his sorry ass, because he already had it out for him over the whole Loki wearing his suit thing. Interestingly, other than a random pap here and there in the heart of the city, we were essentially left to our own devices. No one seemed to care that we were walking around Regent’s Park drinking tea and coffee, having pizza, or grocery shopping. There were fans on occasion, and Tom was always gracious, stopping for a selfie and/or a chat, with me waiting in the wings or taking pictures. I had known it was possible to maintain some degree of anonymity no matter the level of fame involved, and now I’d come to the conclusion that it had a lot to do with the behavior of the celebrity themselves and directly proportional to the size of their entourage. Which we didn’t have, nor wished to have. Granted, Tom had yet to achieve rock god status, but still…if we smiled, waved, and moved on, so did everyone else. People being people.
Two weeks after his sisters had been informed of their father’s infidelity and misdirected their anger at Tom, Emma came over to our flat and they Skyped Sarah, talking through tears and shouts for two hours before apologizing to each other and realizing that the blame lay with no one other than Diana and James themselves. It was a huge weight off his shoulders, and it allowed us to move forward, both of us having dealt with our pasts as well as we could for the time being. Healing, learning, and discovering more and more of each other with every day that passed. Mundane things, like what kind of toothpaste either of us preferred, when we’d learned out times tables…the feeling that I’d always known him becoming increasingly prevalent and so very welcome. While I’d recognized that we were not only lovers but friends as well that night when I willingly shared my Ben and Jerry’s with him at the beach house in Hawaii, I couldn’t have imagined how deep that friendship would become. We lived, we loved, we laughed, and it was astounding to me that I could feel such…peace.
In mid-September the insanity began, both of us going on the road for the promotion of not one, not two, but THREE projects, High-Rise, I Saw the Light and Crimson Peak. The San Sebastian Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival (where we ran into Norman, there promoting Sky, whose premier he invited us to and we attended), the BFI London Film Festival…it seemed endless, the screenings, Tom doing interview after interview, photoshoots and photo calls, Q & A sessions. How he managed to keep which project he was promoting at which event was a mystery to me, and I found myself asking him ‘dude, what’s this one for again’ more than once, and I spent nearly every moment behind the lens of a camera.
Nights were when I edited what I’d gathered and emailed it to Tom, who’d then post it all across his social media accounts. Then came updating the website, followed by fast and furious fucking, then sleep. At some point in all the chaos he‘d dragged me into a coatroom and fucked me from behind, but the when and where wasn’t the slightest bit important at the time so determining its actual geographical occurrence is now impossible…but other than that, we behaved ourselves, acting like grown-up professionals with jobs. I enjoyed just fading into the background and watching him shine. His performance in all three films blew me away, but High Rise was my favorite story. The abortion scene in I Saw the Light made me cringe, especially when I considered how he must have felt filming it, so soon after what he’d been through in his personal life. As soon as it was over, he’d leaned over and kissed my cheek, his hand in mine, both of us squeezing gently.
October twelfth found us in New York City, staying at my apartment, me packing up boxes to be shipped to London that week. My books, the rest of my clothes, and my computer. The rest would remain for when we visited, and while I knew I’d never sell the place, I also knew London had, in an obscenely short period of time, become home. The New Orleans house had been completely cleaned out, the August estate sale netting upwards of one hundred thousand dollars, and Tom made good on his promise to donate a matching amount to the women’s shelter while the actual proceeds were delivered to Will’s wife anonymously. I wasn’t sure what to do about renovations, but was hoping to stop in at some point during the holiday season and think it through.
The fourteenth was the NYC premiere of Crimson Peak, and we’d agreed that while I’d attend, I wouldn’t walk the carpet. He’d balked, at first, but I’d convinced him that doing so would allow everyone to focus on him and his co-stars, which was exactly where the focus BELONGED. I wore the black version of the red dress I’d worn to Daniel, and spent the entire limo ride back to the apartment following the after-party with his face buried in my breasts.
We flew to Nashville on the seventeenth to prepare for the premiere of I Saw the Light…Tom’s anxiety level ratcheted up to a nine, dreading the possibility of an appearance by Claudia. I steeled myself as best as I could, but, thankfully, it was completely unnecessary. The director wanted the venue to be small and down-home, so only bare-bones cast invites had been extended. Meeting his co-star Lizzie was a blast…she was friendly, funny, dorky and gorgeous. The two of us hung out in front of the stage as Tom performed for the crowd, dancing like a couple of idiots and singing along. He was incredible, those damn hips distracting me to no end, and his SMILE, my lord. He’d tried to teach me some guitar chords while we were on the road, but, as expected, I sucked in a way that no one had probably ever sucked before and decided once and for all that being able to sing was enough musical talent for one human being.
Principal photography for Skull Island was slated to start on the nineteenth on Oahu, but Tom wasn’t needed on set until November second so we decided to take a holiday the two weeks prior on Kauai. He’d even managed to sweet talk the reservations gal into giving us the same room…the one I’d been staying in when we met, number 203. As soon as we arrived, we both changed and headed out to put our toes in the sand, which is how we spent most of our time for the next ten days. At long last, my ass was on the fucking beach and it was pure, unadulterated bliss. The nights…that’s when we made up for lost time, screwing each other senseless until we passed out from exhaustion.
Luke and Simon joined us on the twenty-ninth, a short birthday celebration jaunt for the latter. On the thirtieth we all went out to Nawiliwili Tavern to celebrate him turning thirty-eight, and I karaoked so much my throat hurt the next day. And really, it was just from singing. Really.
On the morning of my birthday, I left Tom snoring in our bed to watch the Halloween sunrise from the balcony, a knee-length tropical print satin robe wrapped around me. I’d become a fan of robes…easy to slip on, even easier to rip off. Both of us slept naked, and with all the hotels, room service and sex whenever we could squeeze it in while traveling, it was an excellent way to prevent me from answering the door in the buff. I leaned on the railing, listening to the waves crashing, watching the three joggers heading down the beach leaving sand flying in their wake. Thirty-eight. I wasn’t sure how the fuck this had happened, yet here I was, two years away from forty, the biological clock that had been silent before meeting Tom now ticking away loudly. We both baby goggled, and while we were still back in London we’d had lunch with Ben and his wife, each taking turns holding their baby. I’d caught Tom staring at me, his expression making me want toss my birth control pills in the garbage…full of adoration, love, want and so much more. And him holding such a tiny being in his huge hands…too precious for words.
Last year on this day I’d been working, giving a seminar in Chicago, and my celebration had consisted of six donuts at eleven-thirty PM in my hotel room while I watched the Matrix. This year…other than a costume party at Rob’s Good Times Grill in the evening, I had no clue what was in store for me. I reflected on how much my life had changed, and how I was so incredibly blessed, realizing that I’d be perfectly content to spend the entire day in our room, talking, laughing, dancing…all those simple things that made me genuinely happy. Me. Happy. Something I never thought I’d be, yet here I was. Standing on the balcony of the room where we’d first been intimate, on the island where we’d fallen in love. Grateful tears welled up, spilling over and running down my cheeks, and as I wiped them away I felt hands on my shoulders, followed by a kiss on my neck.
“Good morning, birthday girl.” I turned to face him, and he immediately noticed that I’d been crying. “You okay, love?”
“I’m amazing. Happy tears. Actually, grateful tears. Just thinking about how different things are from last year, and…”
He pulled me to his chest, smoothing my hair as he placed a kiss on top of my head. “I love you, my Maude.” He let me go, hands sliding around and down to grasp my forearms, grinning. “So, ready for your present?”
I poked his chest with my index finger. “Dude, you PROMISED me, NO PRESENTS. The time we’re getting to spend together here before you start filming is my present, and every day with you is a gift ANYWAY so…”
Several beats of uncharacteristic silence followed. “Well look at you, leaving me at a loss for words.”
Wrangling free of his grip, I clapped excitedly. “That’s like a whole ‘NOTHER present, man. WOO HOO!”
He laughed, a drawn out ‘ehehehehehe’, ceasing only when we thought we heard someone yell for us to shut up. We ran back inside and closed the balcony doors behind us, sat on the bed and perused the breakfast menu. I opted for scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon, and Tom decided upon an egg and cheese omelet. After eating quickly, we showered together, and as we dried off in the main area of the room he cleared his throat nervously.
“So, um…I was wondering if maybe you’d like to take a ride out to Talk Story today? I thought perhaps you’d want to pick up some new reading material for while I’m shooting?”
The man knew the only time I had to read these days was when I was on the toilet, but I went with it because, BOOKS. And I’d wanted to go there before we moved on to Oahu anyway, even if it was just to look around. The origin of us. A huge grin spread across my face.
“That sounds fucking epic, babe. What time is it now, like eight-thirty? They open at ten, and the trip there is an hour…”
“Shall we see if Luke and Simon want to join us?”
I snorted. “Ha, if Simon’s even awake yet it would be a bona-fide fucking miracle…but sure, why not? It’d be cool for them to see where we met. God, I’m such a romantic saphead asshat. Gross.”
He laughed, wrapped his towel around his waist and grabbed his phone off the desk. I returned to the bathroom to brush my teeth, only hearing bits and pieces of the conversation. After hanging up, he joined me, eyes on my reflection, and the memory of him fucking me right there four months ago made me shiver, goosebumps pebbling my flesh.
“Believe it or not, they’re not only awake, they’ve had breakfast. Or at least Luke has. Simon appears to be on a liquid diet so far today.”
I spit a final time then spun around, brows raised, and he chuckled.
“What I MEANT was he’s too hung over for food, little miss filthy dirty mind.”
I slapped his ass as I walked out of the bathroom to get dressed. “You fucking love it.”
“Oh, I absolutely do.”
Black bra and panties, grey hiking shorts…but I figured I should ask what he was wearing before I picked out a shirt.
“Babe, what are you....” I’d turned around so my voice would carry better to the bathroom only to find him right THERE, his cock at half-mast. I coughed, then continued. “Wearing. What are you wearing? Fuck, the naked sneak up is NOT COOL, Hiddleston.”
He smirked. “My khaki shorts and a white V-neck, I think.”
“Good. Then I can wear a black one.” I finished dressing while he began, then went to stand before the mirror so I could put my hair back in a ponytail. I’d had it cut and styled before we left London, the ends brushing just below my collar bones. For some reason, even just a few inches and a tiny bit of layering made it much easier to manage. As I was strapping on my Birkenstocks, a quiet rapping on the door began. Tom opened it, and when I saw Simon was wearing giant Kardashian-style mirrored aviator sunglasses indoors, I shouted. Loudly. Even though it hurt my throat to do so.
“Good morning, Mr. Ahlberg. How are we feeling today? Looks like you may have had too much birthday, am I right?”
His voice was raspy as he pulled the Panama hat he was sporting further down his forehead. “Fuck off, bitch.” He was wearing a dark green Polo shirt, white shorts and white loafers.
I rose as he and Luke entered the room, and Luke grinned as he embraced me briefly.
“Happy Birthday, Maude.”
“Thank you, Luke. You look none the worse for wear.” He’d paired khaki shorts with a medium-blue faded T-shirt and Teva sandals, also khaki with blue stripes.
He snorted. “One of us had to behave responsibly. He was up half the night with his head in the bowl…”
Simon shoved him out of the way, wrapping his arms around me to support himself after placing a quick kiss on my cheek, whispering in my ear. “Please kill me. I know it’s your birthday, but it IS Halloween so it’s sort of apropos and I really need to die. I beg you. Put me out of my misery.”
I squeezed him tightly and whispered back. “Not a chance, asshole. I enjoy your snark entirely too much to let it slip from my grasp so easily.”
He sighed, releasing me. “Fine, fine. On with the hour long car ride then. Followed by staring at some books. Then an hour long car ride back. All during which I could have been resting up for tonight.”
We used their rental car, as I’d demanded to have a Jeep Wrangler again and thought Simon might puke if we took that instead. Much like Luke had thought he’d do when we’d gone to our Hula class. Ah, life’s fun parallels that arise from excessive alcohol consumption. Tom had gone back up to the room to retrieve his forgotten phone, and when he came back we were off. Luke and Simon sat in the back, Simon resting his head on Luke’s shoulder, moaning from time to time when Tom took a turn too fast.
He parked us a block down, and we jumped out of the vehicle, excited to be back, and he picked me up and spun me around as we waited for Simon’s slow-ass self.
I rolled my eyes as Tom set me down. “Christ, Simon…you’re like a little old man. Fucking move it along, won’t you?”
I got the bird in return, but the corners of his mouth turned up in a tiny smile. The ibuprofen I’d given him in the car must have started to kick in. Why he hadn’t thought of it on his own…no clue. As we reached the red doors, Tom took my hand, smiling as he opened the door for me. It was exactly the same, which wasn’t really a surprise as only four months had passed, but a feeling washed over me at the sight of it anyway, one of pure joy. His hand squeezed mine as we walked inside, and behind the counter was Roger Marshal, still bearded, same glasses, different Hawaiian shirt, this time red with green leaves. He grinned widely and came around to shake our hands.
“Aloha, Mr. Hiddleston, Ms. Gallagher. Welcome back. I see you brought friends with you on this glorious Halloween day in paradise.”
Tom introduced him to Simon and Luke while I wandered down to the stacks where we’d met. The place was relatively empty…I didn’t see anyone, but assumed customers were just quietly browsing elsewhere. Music was playing, something by 10,000 Maniacs, the name of which always escaped me. Almost instinctually, I went right for the ‘K’s, looking for my white whale…and…THERE IT FUCKING WAS. Not three feet away from me, the spine of the dust jacket unmistakable, silver-grey with a long black tower and yellow text. I stood, frozen in place, listening to footsteps approaching just as I had on that day back in June. Tom’s hand touched my shoulder gently.
“You okay? You didn’t move a muscle while we walked down here.”
I pointed. “It’s there. Do you see it? Tell me you see it.”
He looked. “See what?”
“THE BOOK. THE GUNSLINGER. Yellow text. Black tower. TELL ME YOU SEE IT.”
“Oh, okay…yes…I see it. Wait, isn’t that…”
I nodded, still using my indoor voice but enunciating so strongly they sounded out in all caps. “YES. MY WHITE WHALE. THAT IS A FIRST EDITION COPY OF THE GUNSLINGER.”
He laughed, squeezing my shoulder. “And youre not over there pulling it off the shelf and holding on to it for dear life, why, exactly?”
Reaching up, I patted his hand gently as I whispered. “Because I’m afraid that if I move or even if I blink it will disappear, having only been the cruelest of mirages.”
“If I can see, it, it MUST be real, yes?” His other hand patted my ass. “Best grab it before someone else does, don’t you think?”
I turned to him briefly, eyes wide. “YES. Excellent idea.”
One step, two steps, both very slow, and I noticed that the song had changed. Tilting my head to make sure I wasn’t hearing things in addition to possibly seeing things, I listened closely, turning back around to face Tom.
“Is it me or…is that Tigerlily by La Roux?”
His own head tilted, and he nodded, smiling. “You’re right, it is. What a fantastic coincidence!”
I nodded again, then turned back to my prey. Another two steps and I was there, reaching out my hand to touch the spine gingerly, then quickly pulling back as if I’d been burned.
“Oh my god it’s REAL. And not only is it REAL I think it’s in, like, MINT FUCKING CONDITION this is…I just…” I carefully slid it off the shelf, turning it over in my hands, then back again, opening the cover ever so gently. Much to my horror, there was something written on the flyleaf. I was about to stomp my foot when I noticed my name.
Happy Birthday, Maude.
You hold in your hands not only a first edition, but one from my personal collection…and out of the first box the publisher sent to me. The God of Mischief asked me to do him a solid, and I figured it might be a good idea to go the extra mile. Thanks for being a Constant Reader all these years, and may the wheel of Ka always move forward for you.
With love,
Steve
PS - CONGRATULATIONS!
Tigerlily was still playing, and I re-read the text again, realizing that Tom had planned all of this, for ME, for MY birthday, and I nearly burst into tears but the last bit of what Steve…STEPHEN FUCKING KING… had written confused me and I focused on that in an attempt to keep my shit together. I began speaking, still staring at the word as I turned around.
“Tom, why did he write congra…” I looked up from my precious treasure but didn’t see him, just Luke and Simon, their phones held up and pointing at me. “…ulations?” My gaze moved lower, and there he was. Tom. Down on one knee. Right arm extended. And in his hand was a small black box.
I’d like to say the world around me grew silent and time stopped and the angels began to sing, but that would be lying and, if nothing else, I’m an honest woman.
What really happened is that I blurted out “Ohmygodthefuckareyoudoing?” followed by my right hand flying up to cover my mouth, trying to shove what had just come out back in.
His eyes met mine, peering up from under his brows, lashes so long and soft and glistening with tears, his smile shy and kind and beautiful and I could see his hand shaking just the tiniest bit and my knees got weak and I had to uncover my mouth so I could breathe otherwise my big ass was going to hit the fucking floor.
He cleared his throat, then began to speak. “One hundred and twenty-five days. That’s how long it’s been since I walked through those red doors, down these stacks and saw you, my light in the mist. All of those days that came and went before…they all appear in shades of grey in my mind now, as if I never truly saw the world around me in color until the moment my eyes met yours for the first time. And however many more days we’re blessed with on this earth, I want to spend each and every one of them with you. I know I’ve said this bit already, when we first arrived in New York, but…I’m going to say it again, because it’s the truth, the only truth I know, the only truth that matters. I will love you all of this life, and in each and every one that follows. I will love you as the world turns to ash around us. I will love you as the universe collapses into itself, and in the blackness of the eternity that awaits, I will remain, with you, at your side, holding your hand, never to let go. This love…it knows no bounds. It is forever. Two souls made one, together unto infinity. Maude Gallagher, will you do me the honor…the most extraordinary honor that could ever be bestowed upon me…of becoming my wife?”
I’d stopped breathing at some point, inhaling with an audible gasp at his conclusion, then answering.
“Absofuckingloutely. Yes. Yes yes yes yes YES!”
I threw myself at him, and he rose to catch me just in time, both of us laughing and crying, his forehead resting against mine, Simon and Luke whistling and shouting as we kissed, murmuring ‘I love you’ over and over when we came up for air. Tom pulled back, grinning holding up the black box and shaking it back and forth.
“Aren’t you curious to see your ring?”
Rolling my eyes, I sighed. “I guess so. Whip it out.”
He opened the lid, and what I saw nested inside the black velvet made me feel faint for the second time in mere minutes. The ring was sterling silver, with an oval cut and polished black stone set in raised parenthesis shaped sterling silver bars, one to each side, perfectly mimicking of the style of the necklace given to me by my father. My voice eluded me, and he mistook my silence for displeasure.
“It’s not traditional, I know, and if you’d rather have a diamond we can…”
My head shook back and forth as I reached out and touched it with my right index finger in disbelief, then met his gaze.
“That’s black tourmaline.” He nodded, and I recalled the conspiratorial glance Luke’s mother and Tom’s sister had shared after I’d tried on a ring back at the Cube gallery. “Phaedra made this.”
He nodded again, eyes questioning. I bit my lip, then inhaled sharply before speaking again. “Will you put it on me please?”
His voice was timid, soft. “You like it, then?”
“No, Tom. I love it. It’s perfect. You’re perfect. Everything’s perfect. Put. It. On. Me.” I grinned. “Please.”
As Simon sidled over and took the Gunslinger away from me, Tom slipped the ring out of its slot, put the box in his pocket, then took my left hand in his right and slid the first tangible symbol of our commitment to one another home with the other, a huge, beautiful smile spreading across his face as I brought both our hands up to stare at my latest jewelry acquisition. He watched me, silently, and all the other moments that I’d pushed aside over the past four months formed a slideshow in my mind’s eye. Ben smirking at us as we looked through his wedding album, nudging his wife in the ribs as she giggled…what I’d overheard at Diana’s house, that he wanted something to be ‘perfect’…and, finally, the afternoon at Greenwood Cemetery back in New Orleans when I’d said goodbye to my father. Tom had gone to the crypt, introduced himself and told my father how much he loved me, then asked him a question, cupping his hand to his mouth and whispering against the stone, waiting for an answer, then nodding as he said ‘thank you, sir’. When I’d asked what his question had been he’d refused to tell me, though when I inquired as to whether my father had answered, he’d replied ‘I’d like to think he did.’
Gasping, my hand again flew to my mouth as my breath hitched and the tears flowed. “Tom…my god…how long…when did you decide…was it back in…Tom, that day in the cemetery…my dad…is that what you…”
He nodded, weeping as well. “Yes. I asked him for your hand in marriage.”
Choking back sobs, I reached out and placed my right hand on his shoulder. “But…when did you…when…”
His fingers grazed my temple, then my cheek, coming to rest on my jaw. “When did I know that I wanted to marry you?” I nodded. “That moment in the hotel in New Orleans when you said that if you really, truly love someone you accept them just as they are…and that you accepted me, all of me, every bit. As I took you in my arms, it hit me…I wasn’t just holding the woman I’d fallen in love with any longer. I was holding my wife.”
My sobs broke free, and I wrapped myself around him and buried my face in his chest. He rocked me, smoothing my hair, his chin on the top of my head. “I’m sorry it took me so long to ask. I just…I wanted it to be…perfect.”
Pulling away, I snorted. “Mission accomplished, you glorious bastard. This was over the top, ridiculously romantic, Clint Eastwood and Rob Reiner co-directing a love story PERFECT.”
His eyes widened. “Oh, I almost forgot. The ring…there’s an inscription…”
I yanked it off and held it up to my face. Around the solid portion of the band, flanked on either side by two tiny books was written in a teeny, tiny font, two lines, one on top of the other:
Talk Story - 6/29/15 - Our Story
My Light in the Mist
“Thomas William Hiddleston, I hope you realize that now we have to get MARRIED here. Like, right here. In this very spot. Bridezilla has come ashore and she won’t have it any other way.” I turned my attention from the ring to his face. “I’m serious. Can we? Is that cool with you? Getting married here? I mean, I guess we need to ask…” His smirk resulted in an epic eye roll and heavy sigh from me as I slipped the ring back on my finger. “Aaaaand…you already asked, didn’t you?”
He nodded. “Roger’s fine with it. We just need to let him know a few weeks in advance so he can arrange to close the shop.”
For some reason, that solidified what had just occurred. Tom had asked me to marry him. I’d said yes. I was now his fiancé, the future Mrs. Thomas Hiddleston. And there was now a wedding to plan. Which was exciting and amazing but I had no idea what to do next so I just stood, like a deer caught in headlights. He leaned in, nose touching mine.
“You okay?”
I nodded hard, attempting to clear my head, letting the euphoria take over. “My god, we’re getting MARRIED. Maude Hiddleston. I’m going to need to start practicing that. Gotta say, it sounds pretty fucking great. Nice ring to it. Maude Hiddleston. Yep. Sold.”
His jaw had dropped open, then closed again, eyes full of surprise. “I…you…you want to change your name?”
“Uhhh…yeah. Why wouldn’t I? I mean, if you don’t want…”
He took my hands in his. “Oh, no, no…I…I’d love for you to take my name. See, that sounds awful. Archaic. I didn’t want you to feel like you had to or that I expected you to because, I mean, you’re known a certain way professionally and…”
My lips found his, tongue pushing into his mouth, silencing him the best way I knew how. And, other than pushing his head down between my thighs, my favorite way. As we broke the kiss, he grinned, and so did I.
“Tom. I know some women are very much against changing their names or like to hyphenate, and that’s totally cool, but I’m not one of them. To me, it’s part of joining with someone. Being a family. If that makes me old-fashioned, too fucking bad. Plus, what happens when your kid with the hyphenated name marries another kid with a hyphenated name? Chaos, I say. Chaos.”
His expression was so earnest, so thankful that it caused me to take pause, during which I become cognizant of all I had to be thankful for as well. And that I hadn’t even said thank you, for anything he’d done, which resulted in waterworks yet again as I let go of his hands to place mine on the sides of his beautifully chiseled countenance.
“I’m so sorry…I didn’t say thank you, for any of this…but I’m telling you now. Thank you, Tom. Thank you. I’m going to remember this forever and tell it over and over and our kids and grandkids will be like SHUT UP WE HEARD THAT STORY A HUNDRED TIMES ALREADY and it’s just…I love you, so much, and I’m so blessed to have you in my life and my god, I can’t believe you want to MARRY me because I mean I’m ME and…”
It was his turn to cut things off with a kiss, and as he pulled back I heard Simon’s voice, realizing I had completely forgotten that we weren’t alone and wondering exactly how much they’d filmed.
“Yay, yay, you’re engaged, that’s super, who isn’t though, you know? Anyway. I’m going to create a diversion because if Maude cries again I’m going to lose all respect for her and, frankly, I don’t have that much left TO lose so…” He wrenched me from Tom’s grasp and turned me to face him. “SO, I assume that I’ll be your maid of honor? Because honey, you are REALLY going to need my help…”
I rolled my eyes. “Actually, you’ll wind up being my MATRON of honor because you’ll probably be MARRIED by then, you big fucking dumbass. And…and…” I started to sniffle, tears welling up again.
He covered his eyes with his right hand, having taken the shades off to film, and groaned. “Oh. My. God. Are you going to cry from now until whenever it is you get hitched? Because if that’s the case feel free to go before Luke and I do.”
When I didn’t reply, he uncovered his eyes, saw the look on my face and placed both hands on my shoulders. “I’m sorry, gorgeous…talk to me.”
Taking a deep breath, I wiped the tears from my cheeks with the back of one hand, then attempted to speak. “Will you…I…my…I don’t have a…my dad…isn’t…will…will you walk me down the aisle?”
He, Tom and Luke burst into tears at that, Simon’s hand over his mouth as he nodded repeatedly and pulled me to his chest. His voice was deep but soft in my ear when he was able to talk again. “Of course I will, honey. Of course I will. I’m so sorry your father won’t be there. And you know I’m, like, SO not religious so I’m not going to give you the watching over you nonsense, though I guess who the fuck really knows, but in a way he WILL be there, because he’s part of you. And we need to talk about something else now because crying is making my headache IN-FUCKING-TOLERABLE…”
He released me and Luke took his place immediately, warmly embracing me for the second time that day. His quiet authority was what I saw most of…it wasn’t until we were off the clock that he became himself, and even at that we were only moderately affectionate. Drunk Luke, though…that was an entirely different story. After a few pats to the back, we let each other go, and I pointed at Tom.
“This is some stunt you pulled here, young man. I hope you realize that.”
He grinned from ear to ear, tongue peeking out from between his teeth. “Oh, I do.” His brows rose. “Were you truly surprised?”
“Um, YEAH. No clue. Well, not exactly NO clue. I mean, I picked up on a few things along the way that I seemed odd but I just pushed them aside because…” My eyes turned skyward as I thought of the best way to phrase what came next. “Because as much as I wanted it to be what I thought it was, I couldn’t be sure and I didn’t want to be disappointed if it never happened, I guess. But. Yeah. So, do we need to fill anyone in on the news or am I totally the last one to know?”
“If it never happened. You’re a silly, silly girl.” His lips grazed my cheek. “And yes, there are still plenty of people to tell. Anyone who was privy to my plan was purely essential.”
My left eyebrow shot up. “Oh, how did Ben and Sophie factor in? Do tell.”
He blushed adorably. “I may have tattled to Chris and Elsa too. But…Anne’s still in the dark, so maybe start there?”
Simon had set the Gunslinger on the nearest table, and I started at it and sighed happily. “I cannot BELIEVE you not only managed to find me a first edition copy of the Gunslinger, but you got Stephen King to sign it, and it’s ONE FROM HIS PERSONAL COLLECTION. You are such a complete dork, and I am the luckiest woman alive, Thomas William Hiddleston.”
He walked to my side and slipped an arm around my waist. “So, should we take a photo to post online? Or would you rather do something more formal?”
I snorted. “Fuck formal. Picture, please.”
I held up my left hand at face level between us, the back of it towards Tom’s phone, which Luke was holding, then pointed at the ring with my right and posed with my mouth stretched wide open in a gleeful grin. Tom pointed at it as well, and three clicks later we were good to go.
Taking the phone back from Luke, he typed, then stopped. “Do you want to call Anne before I post this?”
“Nah. I’ll wait for her to call. It’s more fun this way…and honestly, I have no idea how to tell people without sounding like an asshole, so…yeah. Post it.”
He clicked, then turned the screen so I could see it. There we were, his expression mimicking mine, his Twitter message short and sweet.
She said YES!!!!!!!!!! #thefuturemrshiddleston, #iamsoveryblessed, #luckiestmanintheuniverse
Chuckling, I passed the phone back to him. “Um, actually what I said was ‘absofuckingloutely’. Shit. That’s like, filmed and recorded as my official reaction to being proposed to in the most beautiful and perfect way possible. Nice one, me.”
Luke cleared his throat. “So, not to be a killjoy…” Simon snorted. “Do we have a date in mind for the blessed event? Tom’s schedule is…”
I raised my hand. “Oh, oh…I know what Tom’s schedule is…it’s an insane MESS. Gee, wish there was an app for that or something. HA! Anyhow, you’ll have to double check, but I’m pretty sure that there is zero room for it to happen until late April or early May.”
Scrolling through his phone, Luke nodded. “You’re right. After the I Saw the Light press tour and premiere he’s got Night Manager promo until it airs in the states on April nineteenth. Really, the best month seems to be June.”
Tom spread his hands wide. “Well, that makes it simple. Let’s do it on the first anniversary of the day we met. June twenty-ninth. I think I can even squeeze in time for a honeymoon before heading to Australia to start in on Ragnarock.” He turned to me, brows raised, questioning. “Okay with you?”
My eyes met his, then roamed up and down over his form. This breathtakingly beautiful, kind, compassionate, intelligent, gifted, hilarious being…he was going to be my husband. I felt the tears creeping up on me again, but shook them off, breaking myself of the habit lest I, as Simon feared, kept crying every time I thought about marrying the man for the next eight months.
“Oh yeah. Totally okay with me. And shall I assume you had that planned all along as well?”
He laughed, throwing his head back, one hand on his abdomen, smirking adorably when he’d managed to compose himself. “No, actually…that one was totally off the cuff.”
“Sure it was.”
Laughing again, he grabbed my shoulders. “It was. I swear it.”
I sighed. “Well, if you swear it, I guess I should believe you. So…I know this will come as a shock, but …I’m STARVING. Birthday girl needs lunch. Feed birthday girl NOW.”
Tom pulled me close and placed a gentle kiss on my forehead. “How’s Kauai Pasta sound?”
“It sounds like you made reservations for four is how it sounds.” He smiled, licking his lips. “Which is awesome, because I am such a slut for Alfredo…”
Simon’s face appeared over Tom’s shoulder. “Oh, oh…can we please go over the list of things you’re a slut for? THERE ARE SO MANY…”
I flipped him off. “Please. Your list is so long it wouldn’t fit on my 32 gig USB drive.”
His eyes widened in mock horror. “My, my. She becomes some hot guy’s fiancé and her rudeness trebles. Unacceptable.”
Grinning, I turned my gaze back to Tom. “So, are we, like, done with surprises for the day? Because I’m not sure my heart can take another one. Though I do have a surprise of my own for YOU…”
“You do, do you? And what would that be?”
I patted his chest. “That would be my Halloween costume, babe. I fear you may not survive.”
He placed his hand over mine, leaning in so his face was inches from mine. “You do realize that you have not the slightest inkling as to what I’m wearing, don’t you?”
I didn’t. I’d been so focused on keeping mine under wraps I hadn’t considered HIS. And I was afraid to imagine, because the party now seemed an eternity away and if I let my mind wander…my mouth dropped open, then closed, opened, then closed again. “Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. I am so, so fucked.”
A whisper in my ear. “Oh, you are indeed, my darling. You are indeed.”

Kris Galmarini: Channeling a Free Spirit
The youngest of three children, Kris (Warfield) Galmarini has always been a bit of a free spirit. Growing up in Wheeling during the late 90s, she had a penchant for music and creativity, but also adventure. Going with the flow and conforming are not in her wheelhouse. She met young Bob Galmarini at a Young Life retreat while in high school. She felt a strong connection early. Naturally, Bob hailed from Cleveland. Far from ideal, but they managed to stay in contact via letters and phone calls. While her friends gathered at the lunch table, gabbing about the day’s events, Kris stood in the hallway by the pay phones, talking to the man who one day would become her husband. Why? She had a feeling. And when Kris gets a strong feeling, she runs with it. It’s character trait that’s served her well throughout her life. She graduated from Cal-State Northridge in 2003 with a double major in business and music. She was soon married and the two moved to Charleston, S.C., where they still have a home. After the birth of their second child (of three), both Kris and Bob were yearning for a creative outlet and came up with a clothing line named after their two children (Neve and Shepard Hawk). Neve & Hawk was born. It’s grown from offering children’s clothing only to multiple lines, two production facilities and a flagship store in the charming town of San Anselmo, California, mere miles from the Bay Area. It does more than $1 million annually in sales. Not bad for running with a feeling. That same energy and sense of spirit encompasses the Galmarini family. They live free, channeling the parents’ sense of adventure. That same feeling is represented in each piece of clothing they sell.
What started as a children's clothing line has expanded. Kris takes painstaking steps to ensure the quality of her clothing lines, not only in design, but also material.
What inspired you to go into this industry, not only in general, but to also offer the handcrafted, exclusive items that comprise your line? Each piece seems unique; where does the inspiration come from?
In 2010, after I just had my second baby, my husband and I would create together at home when the kids went to sleep. We desperately wanted to find ourselves again in the haze of a newborn and a three-year-old, yet didn't have the finances or the time to get that fulfillment outside of the home. So, we decided to tend to our passions inside of the house- playing music, sipping wine, and creating at night while the kids slept. My husband, Bob, is an artist and I had a passion for clothing design and so we combined our arts. What started as a t-shirt line quickly turned into more. And, here we are, 10 years later with a full clothing brand and flagship, all items produced in San Francisco and Peru. I think that at each stage, the concept and design is the focus and we haven't strayed from that. The design and ethical ethos behind our brand are what is important to us and what will be most important to us as we continue to grow.
The front of the Neve & Hawk flagship store in San Anselmo, California is pictured.
How has the business progressed from inception to where it stands today, not just in location and volume, but in how spread out the customer base is. Do you find you do more business at the flagship store or online? Also, any additional plans for expansion, both in locale or offerings?
Our brand started as a kid's clothing brand and was solely that for over five years. We only were direct to consumer (online) and in other stores (wholesale). We were doing great, but I wasn't happy. I didn't like being behind a desk, chasing money and dealing with stores. The creative part was secondary, and I began to hate my work. So, I started to figure out exactly what I wanted. And, it was a space to both sell and create in a world in which I wasn't managing accounts. So, I stopped all wholesale immediately and started the search for our first brick & mortar shop. When this happened, I decided to begin women's clothing and it quickly grew legs of its own and kind of dictated our direction. That was 2016. We have now had our store for almost four years. And, while our shop carries home, women’s, kids and men’s, our brand is 99% women’s. As for the percentages of sales online and in store- we used to sell more online. But we now are pretty even, doing almost $1 million a year in combined sales. As for expansion, in December we opened a craft coffee shop inside our flagship, partnering with an amazing woman owned, San Francisco-based coffee brand Lady Falcon Coffee Club. It has brought life to our store and has been so fun. And, ironically, has kept us alive during this weird time with Coronavirus. We are hoping to take this flagship model of store & coffee house and open another location in Charleston, South Carolina in the next year as we still consider Charleston home and still have a place there as I didn't want to fully let go.
One of the newest additions to the flagship location is the coffee shop, which wound up playing a huge roll in bridging the financial gap during the heart of the pandemic closure.
As a business owner, how has the pandemic affected you differently than the average citizen? You have a brick and mortar store to contend with, and employees? What affect has it had on them and how difficult was it to make the decisions you had to make?
The past three months been hard. I am not sure which has been more difficult, the emotional toll or the drop in revenue. The first few weeks were about fighting for my employees, coming up with a plan and doing hours of paperwork to get a PPP loan. We were unable to open at all and our production was shut down immediately in both countries so there was a lot of confusion with how to proceed. I am happy to say my full-time employees never missed a paycheck. And, they have been rock stars. It has been a delicate balance of making sure my employees are safe and figuring out how to make money during this time to make sure we survive. A whole lot of pivoting. That coffee shop we added the end of last year? Turns out it is what has saved us in many ways as were able to open curbside and also began a coffee delivery program locally, so people did not have to leave their homes during this time. Those things have kept us alive. We also did a pre-sale for clothing items that were in production when everything shut down and our customers really supported us in that release. We are so incredibly grateful. Now, we are open curbside most days for retail and coffee as well as coffee delivery and subscriptions, just trucking along and learning a lot along the way. We also took the first month off to get our whole flagship online- every brand and artist we carry in our physical location is now on our website too. It’s something we have wanted to do for years but never had the time. There are silver linings in this craziness. I have to focus on that, or I will just cry.
On your website you do a lot to mention and promote other small businesses in your community. On paper, it seems like a nice little town full of a variety and yet close enough to a major metropolitan area like San Francisco. Is it the perfect mix?
I love where we live--San Anselmo, California. It is the best little town and the community is wonderful. So many great restaurants and stores not only in our town but in all the other small surrounding towns in Marin. It is only 15 miles from San Francisco, right over the Golden Gate Bridge. It really is such a great mix and I feel so lucky to live here. As for other small businesses? YES! We must all support one another. The idea of us all being competition is sad to me. We are stronger together. Why feel threatened?
It's not uncommon for the Galmarini family to set off on an adventure. That freedom of spirit is what makes them who they are and its encompassed in the Neve & Hawk clothing line.
You met your husband in 1996 and you’ve been on this incredible journey together. You work together, play together, have three children. And you’re successful together. Given how other families struggle to make their lives work, do you ever have to sit back and pinch yourself?
I met my husband, Bob, in 1996 at Young Life camp. I used to call him from the pay phones in the North Commons and we wrote letters back and forth and dated on and off until 2001 when my mom passed. It was at her funeral that we reconnected and were married in 2004. We have lived in San Diego, LA, Charleston, and the San Francisco area. We have three kids—Neve (13), Shepard (9) and Sebastian (3). We came to San Francisco for his job, yet my work started to boom once we came. I think the key is that we have always been supportive of one another. I do pinch myself, all of the time. But it isn't always easy. Trying to navigate his crazy job (he is senior director of brand design at Slack) and my business, as well as the kids and their activities and school isn't always pretty. Sometimes it is an exhausting struggle. But we are both all in and that means everything. We also both are adventure driven so we are constantly dreaming up scenarios for our lives and then sometimes we just do them, even if it isn't the smartest investment. We are dreamers and also doers and those things combined can be amazing, and dangerous. I think the hardest thing is to make sure we carve out time for ourselves so Bob can surf, and bike and I can run or pretend I am running and read a book with wine in my hand. Whatever it is, we need to escape to it to fill up to be better for our kids and each other. Do we still want to punch each other sometimes? Of course. That is marriage and parenthood. Anyone that says otherwise is lying. Read the full article

FASHION CREDITS: LADY GAGA BY SEBASTIAN FAENA FOR HARPER’S BAZAAR SEPTEMBER ISSUE
Back on June 5, 2014 Lady Gaga was photographed by Sebastian Faena for Harper’s Bazaar’s “Iconic Women” issue under the creative direction of Carine Roitfeld and Stephen Gan.
Her hair was done by Akki Shirakawa, makeup by Tom Pecheux using Estée Lauder, and her nails by Mar Y Sol.
Gaga’s first look comprises a jacket, bralette, pencil skirt and fedora from Chanel’s grocery store-themed Fall/Winter 2014 prêt-à-porter collection.
The cotton candy-pink & white plaid tweed jacket boasts a round neck, full-length sleeves and embellished double C buttons.
Her long pencil skirt was cut on set by Carine into a raw hem mini skirt, as you can see in this photo.
The black fishnet tights, she wore almost throughout the entire spread, are signed by La Perla!
Her bag is Chanel’s sequin Pop Art flap bag with brushed silver-tone hardware, chain-link and leather shoulder straps.
She also wore the black satin Tribeca peep-toe platform sandals by Brian Atwood.
Next, Lady Gaga is donning her Italian curls while wearing La Perla’s black Talisman fishnet signature bustier from their Fall/Winter 2014 lingerie collection.
Her tights are by the French lingerie brand as well and were worn troughout the entire shoot.
Chanel created her pearl diamond bracelet and the pictured San Marco cuff.
This cuff is made of 18k white-gold, set with 988 brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of 22,5 carats (with a 1,5-carat central princess-cut diamond), 4 pear-cut emeralds with a total weight of 4,6 carats and 4 pear-cut sapphires with a total weight of 13 carats.
The Serpenti snake silver and ruby diamond cuff is by Bvlgari. Her mismatched earrings are both by Cartier.
Her Rose lace peep-toe thigh-high boots are from Gianvito Rossi’s Fall/Winter 2014 footwear collection. These feature a lace-up front.
The photo above is actually an outtake. She kept the La Perla lingerie on and tied a colorful hand-painted leather jacket with attached mutton gloves from Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
Yamamoto collaborated with Japanese artist Yasuto Sasada for the artworks presented on his pieces.
In these photos Gaga is rocking a black Italian lace midi dress from Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
The dress boasts a high neck. She wore the matching stretch-silk satin balconette bra and high-waisted briefs.
The look was completed with a fishnet face mask and the Van Cleef & Arpels diamond Snowflake drop earrings...
...and Tess ring from the 744 Fifth collection featuring diamonds set in platinum.
This crackled leather jacket was designed and created by Gaga’s own sister Natali Germanotta.
It’s from her Spring/Summer 2014 “Vertigo” Parsons final thesis collection and features an asymmetrical zipper, layered sleeves and zip pockets.
Her white fishnet tights are by Wolford.
Finally, Gaga poses in a textured black oversized suit jacket with double-breasted button front from Christopher Kane’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
She wore the aforementioned Dolce & Gabbana lingerie and a single Chanel high jewelry Fontaine diamond earring.

Our Spanish Hosts
When Helen was 16, her parents sent her off to Swiss summer school in Chateau D’Oex, just up the mountain from Montreux, Switzerland (home to the famous jazz festival and the Smoke on the Water casino Frank Zappa burnt down in 1971). She spent two summers in a row learning French, playing tennis, hiking and having many secret crushes on European girls. The very first summer she went, she was paired with a lovely 15-year-old named Oihana Arratibel from San Sebastian, Spain. They became instant friends and to this day – 25 years later – they are still friends.
Oihana wasn’t able to make it to our wedding, so we took our celebration to her and her lovely boyfriend Dani. We stayed in their gorgeous apartment that they just remodeled. Their apartment is like a showroom of a designer furniture store. And that makes sense because Oihana’s family owns a furniture and high-end design business.
We spent our 3 days in San Sebastian hanging out with Oihana and Dani, their good friend Amir, and Oihana’s two sisters and their boyfriends. All just wonderful and warm and hilarious.
On Sunday, Oihana gathered the entire family - Mom, Dad, sisters, boyfriends and BABY NIKO - and took us to eat at a private men’s cooking club, a common thing in Spain. It was a small space with an industrial kitchen and 4 or 5 long tables. When you are a member of this particular club, you can reserve the space and cook for a large group. You have access to all the supplies of a professional kitchen, and you can buy beer, wine and cider at really inexpensive prices. At the end of the meal, you just tally what you’ve consumed and pay the club.
There is one VERY important rule in the club. Only men are allowed in the kitchen! Women aren’t even allowed on the step up to the kitchen. Fine by us! Dani and Iñigo did all the heavy lifting. We just ate and enjoyed. The food was absolutely excellent: fresh tomatoes garnished with only olive oil and flakey sea salt; a basque style chorizo; delicious prawns, the kind where peel it and savor the juices; Iñigo’s aforementioned tortilla; monkfish with tiny, perfect peas; steak; piquillo peppers; white asparagus; and a cheese platter to finish that absolutely blew our minds.
In the picture below, Iñigo is cutting up potatoes to make his famous tortilla española, the BEST one of the trip hands down.
This day was beyond special for Helen because loves these people like family. Getting to be with everyone is so rare and she savored every minute of it. Just a perfect day.
Below, Nora and Ibaye feed the newest member of the family, Niko.
When Helen met Nadia, on the right, she was only nine!

& L’Oréal Paris brings brand ambassador Fatou N’diaye to the Cannes Film Festival in tandem with red carpet protest by actresses, directors and other women in the industry, resulting in Cannes officials pledging to make gender equality a top priority.

Celebrity endorsement deals have always been a way for brands to bring a bold spotlight on a product. But lately the deals seem to be bigger, more strategic and come with some serious financial positioning for the people involved.
Superstars are getting savvy. This means not simply being the face of a product, but banking on their names and business acumen to spin off a company. Instead of needing to land a spokesperson deal, celebrities can simply launch their own product or company and sell directly to their own fanbase. Rihanna in particular this year showed that her status could carry an entire fashion house — and make history in the process.
While businesses may be used to competing with other stores in their niche, the celebrity retailer is becoming a force to be reckoned with. They have name recognition, financial power and — not to be underplayed — social media followings that give them a direct line to their potential customers.
Here are a few pop culture figures who made big moves in retail this year:
Rihanna continues to disrupt everything
It's been the year of Rihanna.
In May, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton partnered with the international superstar to create a new fashion house named Fenty, making Rihanna both the first woman to create an original brand and the first woman of color to launch a fashion house with the conglomerate.
Then she turned the lingerie world upside down. Her Savage x Fenty brand's New York Fashion Week show was made available to Amazon Prime subscribers. The resulting show received overwhelming acclaim, with people making broad claims about how the brand was in the midst of reinventing the concept of the lingerie show — a spot once ruled by retail rival Victoria's Secret. While Victoria's Secret's future appears rocky at best, the lingerie market is in the middle of a massive awakening that aims to accept a wide variety of body types, races and genders, with Savage x Fenty playing a key part.
Most recently, the Fenty Beauty brand launched a flagship store on Alibaba's Tmall Global, where it sells over 200 products as part of a larger expansion into Asia.
Outside of retail, Rihanna is prospering, too. She was just named the world's richest female musician, although much of her fortune comes from her partnership with LVMH, according to Forbes.
Snoop Dogg becomes a minor investor in Klarna
Retailers are becoming more creative when it comes to frictionless payment options, particularly with consumers paying in installments.
European fintech company Klarna has been making moves in retail by offering buy now, pay later services to 170,000 merchants in 17 countries. Fast-fashion retailer H&M a little over a year ago invested $20 million in the business and companies including Rue21, Toms and Asos have followed suit.
What was completely unexpected, though, was Snoop Dogg becoming a shareholder in the company. He also became the spokesperson of the company's "Get Smooth" marketing campaign, in which he was named "Smooth Dogg."
"I've been looking for an opportunity to expand my tech investment portfolio to Europe and seeing the way Klarna operates and how they challenge the status quo, I think it's a match made in heaven," Snoop Dogg said in a statement at the time.
Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said of the partnership, "Snoop is not only a rap legend, but also a successful businessman, with a genuine interest in tech, retail and e-commerce."
Lady Gaga launches beauty on Amazon
While Amazon has been pushing further into the beauty space, its primary beauty coup this year came in the form of Lady Gaga. Hype around July's Prime Day culminated in the reveal that beauty products from the singer's new company, Haus Laboratories, could be pre-ordered during the annual sales event.
The tie-up was strategic on Amazon's part, which also this year announced Amazon Professional Beauty, an e-commerce offering for stylists, barbers and estheticians where users must provide a professional license prior to being able to shop the platform. It's a move that positions Amazon in direct competition with Sally Beauty and Ulta as a solution for busy professionals.
Shoppers can currently purchase a variety of eye and lip products (and a Face Masque Armor Sticker) ranging in price from $16 to $49 on both Amazon and HausLabs.com. "We want you to love yourself, and it is our mission to spread kindness, bravery, and creativity by providing tools for self-expression and reinvention," the company says in a statement about its mission.
Amazon was recently named as a top online destination for purchasing beauty products in a study by Stella Rising, with Ulta and Sephora tied at second place.
Kim Kardashian takes over shapewear
Kim Kardashian's play into the shapewear market got off to a rocky start. In July, she revealed via social media that she was launching a new undergarment collection, dubbed Kimono Solutionwear. The product line was to have items in sizes XXS to 4XL and come in nine different shades, thus appealing to a broad range of races and body types.
The name, however, didn't go over so well.
Backlash came quickly, with many people stating that the name kimono was appropriated from Japanese culture. It even drew ire from the mayor of Kyoto, Japan, who implored her to rethink the company name. After a quick retreat, Kardashian decided to change the brand to be called Skims Solutionwear. The shapewear brand sold out within minutes of its September launch, landing around $2 million in sales, according to Women's Wear Daily. The company has since announced its second loungewear line, the Cotton Collection, which went on sale on Tuesday.
In addition to her shapewear venture, Kardashian is also involved in a joint project to sell secondhand apparel. The company, Kardashian Kloset, allows shoppers to purchase items directly from the wardrobes of both the Kardashian and the Jenner families. The move may prove to be particularly lucrative. Resale has grown 21 times faster than the retail apparel market over the past few years, and it is forecast that the segment will reach $51 billion by 2023.
Gwenyth Paltrow quietly expands her empire
Despite continuing controversy, Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop lifestyle brand is rapidly expanding in multiple industries, including in the retail space.
The company has three permanent shops (its Lab shops are in L.A., New York City and London), has been experimenting with pop-ups and now has beauty and wellness products in over 40 locations across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Recent reports have indicated that the company is spreading to other locations, too. The San Francisco Chronicle announced that a Lab boutique was opening in November and a goop pop-up launched in September in Nashville.
This summer, Goop partnered with Mastercard and Next Retail Concepts on an "immersive" e-commerce concept in Canada, per a Mastercard press release. The platformed allowed shoppers to virtually navigate through a 3D version of Toronto's goop MRKT concept in order to "interact with their favorite goop products, and engage with digital content."
Earlier this year, Variety discovered that Goop landed a docu-series deal with Netflix that will focus on physical and spiritual wellness. Goop also will be producing a podcast in partnership with Delta Air Lines.

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid’s life is far less exotic. At least there’s her day job at a local bookstore–free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can’t.
But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle’s demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won’t help because Georgina’s about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny. . .

When he’s assigned a new 24/7 bodyguard, he comes face-to-face with the worst case scenario: being attached to the tattooed, MMA-trained Yale graduate who’s known for “going rogue” in the security team – and who fills 1/3 of Maximoff’s sexual fantasies.
Twenty-seven-year-old Farrow Keene has one job: protect Maximoff Hale. Flirting, dating, and hot sex falls far, far out of the boundary of his bodyguard duties and into “termination” territory. Vicious By: V. E. Schwab Narrated by: Noah Michael Levine Series: Villains [Schwab], Book 1
A masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers.
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates – brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), and aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find – aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the arch nemeses have set a course for revenge – but who will be left alive at the end? In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains – and friends or enemies – with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.
Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city – a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent – but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.
When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

These 14 startups endorsed by the seed-stage investment firm Pear just hit the fundraising trail
Earlier this week, in a beautiful garden in Woodside, Ca., the team at the five-year-old, seed-stage venture firm Pear hosted it fifth annual demo day. It’s an event that’s limited to roughly 100 VCs who year after year happily fill the space to see what Pear — which has written early checks to the “unicorn” delivery service DoorDash and newly public Guardant Health, among others — has up its sleeve.
As with last year, what those investors wound up seeing on Tuesday was 15 teams, most of them six months old or younger and led by current students or recent graduates who’d been invited by Pear to build companies over ten weeks in its Palo Alto offices. These ranged from a startup with ambitious plans to build a new commercial space station, to a machine learning-powered cloud video platform that makes it far easier to edit video clips, to a startup that uses AI to negotiate salary discussions on behalf of its clients.
But in a bit of a twist, this time around, Pear also featured a sprinkling of young companies that are now ready for Series A funding, including a solar design and sales platform for residential and commercial photovoltaic systems, and a company that thinks its check-out free shopping technology could help all kinds of Amazon rivals compete with the giant’s growing number of surveillance-powered, no-checkout convenience stores.
In case you’re an investor or just someone interested in keeping your thumb on the pulse of what’s happening in emerging tech, herewith is a quick snapshot of each of the companies that were featured as part of the program. (Well, all but one that expressly asked us not to write about what it’s working on. We’ll just tell you that it’s a kind of social network and, remarkably, it feels fresh.)
If you’re interested in reaching out to any of these folks, you can find of all of their email addresses here.

The cult TV show Portlandia pushed Portland, Oregon to hipster fame, but behind the city’s heralded “cool” veneer, lies a white supremacist history. Black people were explicitly forbidden from living in the city when the state entered the union in 1859. According to the 2010 census, the city still identified as 76.1% white resulting in The Atlantic magazine dubbing Portland the “whitest city in America” in a 2016 story that crunched the numbers. Despite that, African-American owned businesses and artistic offerings are flourishing in Portland if you know where to look for them. Here are some suggestions for exploring the unique contributions made by people of color to the city of Portland.
Hip-Hop Wine Tasting at Abbey Creek Vineyard
Bertony Faustin, the owner and winemaker of Abbey Creek Vineyard, in the northwest outskirts of the Portland metropolitan area, said one of the biggest challenges since he first launched his winery was convincing people he is the actual owner. “The wine industry paints a different picture of what someone in my industry is ‘supposed’ to look like,” he said in an interview.
Faustin has created a tasting room that has an experience tourists won’t find at other Oregon based tasting rooms. He’s designed it to be an unintimidating experience. The first thing you encounter is the music, hip-hop, which makes him likely the only hip-hop winery in Oregon. The next thing you’ll notice is his nonchalant way of tasting wine. He focuses less on discussing varietal and terroir and more on having conversations and connecting with guests on a personal level.
“I don’t need your validation on how amazing a winemaker I am,” Faustin said. “In fact, I don’t even truly sell wine. I sell love, magic, and cool shit, and there just happens to be wine available.”

Art or Sneakers with Your Coffee
Bison Coffeehouse is owned by Loretta Guzman, a Portland native and a tribal member of the Shoshone Bannock tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho. Her coffee shop displays artwork exclusively by Native artists from across the United States.
Deadstock Coffee is the brainchild of Ian Williams, a former Nike shoe designer. His sneaker-themed coffee shop pays homage to Portland as the sneaker capital of the world. Williams roasts his own beans and serves up basketball themed signature coffee creations.

Chocolate and Snowballs
At Cloud Forest, Sebastian Cisneros draws inspiration from his childhood in Ecuador in crafting his singular chocolate creations. When possible, he sources his cacao beans from local farms, and imports whole vanilla pods from Ecuador. Visitors to this shop can watch the chocolate-making process while savoring one of Cisneros’ designs or enjoying a coffee, tea, pastry or ice cream available through the business’ partnerships with local food artisans.
Hana’s Authentic New Orleans Snowballs and More is a family owned establishment that serves over 50 in-house made flavors of authentic New Orleans snowballs. These concoctions consist of flavored syrups poured over a ball of shaved ice and served in a paper cone. Some of Hana’s more unusual flavors include Bahama Mama, Tigers Blood, and Wedding Cake.
Ethnic Food From Around the World
Either/Or Café was launched when Ro Tam, a first-generation Taiwanese-American, wanted to replicate the community feeling she experienced at her parents’ Chinese restaurant in San Diego. Visitors should sample her craft chai concentrate titled Tanglewood Chai.
Nong’s Khao Man Gai has expanded from a downtown Portland food cart serving khao man ghai, a popular Thai dish made with chicken and rice, to two brick and mortar storefronts.
The Portland Mercado provides affordable retail space for businesses to launch and grow, and has emerged as a hub for Latino culture in Portland. The nine food carts there represent a diversity of Latin cuisine including offerings from Columbia, Cuba Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Empanadas
Denim, Leather and More
Ginew, the worlds’ only Native American-owned premium denim collection, originated when Amanda Bruegl (Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee) and Erik Brodt (Anishinaabe-Ojibwe) made a series of belts from a buffalo hunted by Erik’s father. This store offers “Native-Americana” heirloom goods and work wear made with selvedge denim, leather, brass, and wool.
Under the guidance of the Martinez family, the Orox Leather Co. features unique leather goods made using domestically sourced leather and sustainable (often even recycled) trappings.
At Project Object/Upper Metal Class, jewelry designer T Ngu melds art and activism in her storefront shop with a particular focus on supporting women, LGBTQ, people of color, artists, and designers.
Green Hop, the first historical hip-hop recreational cannabis dispensary in the world, offers customers an art and digital technology experience by seeking to link musicians, art, and cannabis. For example, their carefully curated collection of cannabis flower is displayed next to the records of specific hip-hop artists with hip-hop art adorning the walls.

Multicultural Festivals
Those wanting to sample the vast array of multicultural offerings in Portland and the surrounding environs might want to check out My People’s Market. This day-long celebration features over 90 local vendors, live music, art, and activities, as well as ample selections of food and drink. The next marketplace will be held in November 2018.

Feast Portland, an annual food festival in its seventh year, aims to represent diverse cultures in their lineup and schedule. This year’s festival held September 13-16, 2018 features a diverse line-up of chefs participating in numerous events throughout the city.
Held annually the last weekend in June, Good in the Hood Music and Food Festival is the largest multicultural festival in the Pacific Northwest. This three-day music festival opens with a community parade and features live music, vendors, and a beer and wine garden along with a kids’ space and a youth venue.

Karen Ward founded Portland Abbey Arts with the mission to foster a diverse and vital community through collaborative arts events and education in north Portland. Their offerings include The Round, an ongoing multicultural arts, music, and poetry experience. During this event, three musicians perform rounds of music with a poet performing ‘Spoken Word’ between song rounds. A visual artist depicts their experience of this interweaving of music and poetry, creating a singular collaborative experience shared by the audience and the artists.
Visitors looking to experience Portland’s many cultures and flavors can try these once-a-year festivals or everyday businesses. Those wishing to continue this exploration should check out this link from Travel Portland of PDX-area minority-owned businesses.
