Can I ask your opinion on the tiktok Cyber did in defense of Legion's Gaza derail? I don't have a horse in this race as my abuse was solely at the hands of one person and I've never encountered any traffiking rings in my time as a survival sex worker, so I'm woefully uneducated on how bad or multinational OEA can get. Thanks in advance for reading this even if you don't plan to answer, and again for all you do to source DID information.
Does anyone have a link to Cyber's video? I'm admittedly not the best at using TikTok myself.
For the remainder of this post I'll be addressing Legion's video, found here, unless they delete it of course: https://www.tiktok.com/@legion.sys/video/7376743310095846689
It's no secret that human trafficking can happen during wars or other conflicts. It is happening now with the Russia-Ukraine War (https://rovienna.iom.int/news/human-trafficking-times-conflict-case-ukraine ; https://www.state.gov/reports/2023-trafficking-in-persons-report/ukraine/). However, during times of war it is incredibly difficult to maintain accurate records for things like this, especially when most of the "outside" world is trying to peer into a country like Russia that has been isolating itself over the past decades.
Furthermore, the types of human trafficking happening in Ukraine differ from what Legion alleges is happening in Israel. The two primary types of human trafficking happening in Ukraine are:
Refugees being trafficked to other countries by opportunistic brokers that do not function as an arm of any government (https://www.unhcr.org/news/news-releases/statement-risks-trafficking-and-exploitation-facing-refugees-ukraine-attributed). Most of these refugees are trafficked into other countries in Europe, though some are trafficked into the United Arab Emirates (https://nycfpa.org/08/09/vulnerable-ukrainian-women-and-children-are-at-great-risk-of-being-trafficked-claims-new-report/).
Russia's government trafficking Ukrainian children out of Ukraine and into Russia. I hate to cite Wikipedia, but this is so prevalent that there is a Wikipedia article about it with no shortage of references to other sources as well, including the UN and ICC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_abductions_in_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War ; https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64985009).
I'll stop here and make the disclaimer that, as a blogger on the Internet, I am not an expert on international geopolitical relations or military conflicts. But even for the experts, it can be incredibly challenging to verify facts and keep records during times of war.
My main problems with Legion's accusations are as follows:
Legion cites no sources other than "testimonies that have been told to [them]"
Legion alleges that Israel's government is orchestrating "a multinational network of human trafficking rings based in the West Bank...involved with organ trafficking, skin trafficking, and general sex trafficking", calling the organization an "Israeli Zionist human trafficking project"
Legion alleges that this "Israeli Zionist human trafficking project" is a global operation
Legion alleges that "there are people in our community who are direct survivors" of this "project", and
Legion alleges that this "project" directly affects the US and the UK in addition to Gaza.
There is already immense fog of war surrounding what's happening in Gaza, so much so that it has been difficult to even establish casualty numbers. By throwing out this kind of information without a source, Legion is only adding to that fog. I don't expect anything else from someone who rarely cites sources in general, but if the genocide of Palestinians is really this important to you, don't you think you should back up what you're saying? If ANYTHING was important enough to need a source attached, wouldn't it be this? I've heard rumors about the skin bank and organ bank before, but I think it's very different to make those claims than it is to claim that Israel's government is conducting global human trafficking and RAMCOA / OEA.
Furthermore, this alleged global "Israeli Zionist human trafficking project" sounds a lot like antisemitic propaganda that the RAMCOA / OEA community has been hearing for decades from figures like Fritz Springmeier, Svali, and Unwelcome Ozian. How is this any different? What is Legion's motive in saying this?
The reason I mentioned the trafficking in Ukraine due to the Ukraine-Russia War is to also point out that in conflicts like these, it is far more likely and far more common for brokers and individuals to be taking advantage of those who want to flee the country, than it is for that country's government to set up "a multinational network of human trafficking rings". By spouting unfounded and antisemitic conspiracy theories about Israel's government allegedly trafficking people around the world, you are completely ignoring the very real stories of people who think they're escaping Gaza only to end up being sold into human trafficking by a broker.
The other problem is that by hearing something about Gaza and turning it into "well, there are people in the RAMCOA community who are directly affected by this", Legion is decentering the men, women, and children who are being murdered in Gaza right now while you are reading this. And the statement that Israel's "multinational" trafficking ring somehow affects people in the US and UK is one of the most tone-deaf things I have ever heard.
Let me put it more bluntly. Teenagers and young adults in the US and UK who claim to have been through RAMCOA or OEA are not who we need to be centering in our conversations about Gaza. But in Legion's video about Gaza, that's exactly what they're doing.

Pristina Basic Prosecution announced on Thursday that seven suspects have been arrested for posting personal information, photos and videos of women and girls without their consent in a group on messaging app Telegram called Albkings, which had over 100,000 members.
Some of the arrests were made shortly after BIRN reported to the Kosovo Police and the Pristina Basic Prosecutor’s Office that the phone number of a BIRN journalist had been shared in the Albanian-language Telegram group.
“In close cooperation with the Police Directorate of Cyber Investigations, we managed to finally close this group,” case prosecutor Elza Bajrami told media on Thursday.
Bajrami said that “the Basic Prosecutor’s Office in Pristina is continuing on several other lines of investigation, because thanks to the collection of information, it is suspected that the same persons may be perpetrators of several other criminal offences”.
He explained that the Albkings group had been closed before but then reopened twice.
On May 6, 2024, the personal phone number of a BIRN journalist, whose identity BIRN will not disclose for security reasons, was shared by members of the Telegram group without her authorisation.
The phone number of a woman journalist from Kosovo media outlet Klan Kosova was also shared in the Albkings group.
Pristina Chief Prosecutor Zejnullah Gashi told media on Thursday that many intimate photos and videos were shared in the Telegram group.
Gashi said that “there is a real possibility that in this case, investigations will be expanded” and more people might be arrested for a range of criminal offences.
One of the group’s alleged administrators, identified only by the initials E.N., was previously arrested on April 16, and has been remanded in custody for two months.
On April 23, a woman with the initials E.S., a second alleged administrator of the group, was also arrested and remanded in custody for two months.
The alleged main administrator and creator of the Telegram group, identified only as F.P., was arrested on May 23 and remanded in custody for a month.
The first person to be detained in relation to the group was an 18-year-old, named as L.B., who was arrested in February this year for sharing private photos of an unidentified girl.
By the time of his arrest, around 112,000 members had joined the group where personal data, intimate, derogatory, and ‘deep fake’ videos and photos, mainly of women and girls, are being shared.
By February 9, 2024, 20,993 photos and 19,516 videos had been shared. The group went private soon afterwards.
In March this year, based on content analysis and interviews with experts, BIRN found that TikTok also is being used across the Balkans to abuse and humiliate women and girls online.
Over the course of several weeks, BIRN identified 427 videos posted between September 2020 and November 2023 that humiliate girls and women.
The videos were shared by accounts in Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. In total, the videos were viewed more than 30 million times, each garnering dozens, sometimes hundreds of abusive comments.
Several of the videos that BIRN identified that were shared on TikTok by accounts in Kosovo were also shared in the Albkings Telegram group.

For the wip game, what can you tell us about ‘Enjoy the Silence’ and/or ‘My Heart Burned Open Wide’?
So I answered My Heart Burned Open Wide for @atonalginger, link:
But I'll happily talk about 'Enjoy the Silence'! That's a chapter in my Deus Ex fic, Odysseus Gambit, featuring Adam Jensen from the DX prequels and my OC Sloane Delacourt.
At this point in the story, they're both rather damaged people. Adam is trying to cope with missing a year of his life after expecting to die saving the world, and woke up a) to find he hadn't really saved it, and b) there's stuff in his head he doesn't understand. (Trying to keep this spoiler-light for those who haven't played the games and might be interested.) But the Illuminati's still out there and he's going to bring them down, dammit! Despite the PTSD he's trying hard to ignore and the nagging little voices in his head.
Sloane, meanwhile, is the daughter of a high-ranking Illuminata (though she doesn't know it), who pretty much had her to try and blackmail her father, David Sarif, into toeing the Illuminati line, and when it didn't work, tried to raise her as an emotionless copy of herself. Also didn't work, but Sloane is struggling with the emotional damage that went along with that. (And 15 years in the Special Forces, where she soaked up a lot of the military attitude toward managing one's feelings.) Hyper-rationality, inability to accept that she actually is capable of feelings (especially that L-word, no no no we don't talk about that at all), repression and the occasional bit of disassociation... you know, the usual.
So here they are, they're friends, and each of them is trying to deal with a healthy dose of attraction to the other, but not willing to show it. Then Sloane accidentally breaks Adam's cyber-hand while they're sparring. Their usual aug expert is out of town dealing with another problem, but fortunately Sloane's a Special Forces medic trained to repair augs as well as keep people alive, so it's no problem. She'll just put it back together herself!
But it doesn't quite go as expected, and they're both shocked into a realization that they can't just go on as they have been...
“That does it for the internal repairs,” she said quietly, as he gave the fingers an experimental flex. “Just need to fix the damage to the outer layer; won’t be too much longer and I’ll be out of your hair.”
“I appreciate your help,” he reassured her. “What else do you need to do?”
She dug around in her medical bag, extracting a small bottle. “Well, you know this—” she tapped gently on the nanofiber ‘skin’ “—was designed to be self-healing, given a little carbon?”
Adam nodded. “Yeah, Koller said something about graphite?”
Sloane chuckled. “Graphite dust gets everywhere. I have something better.” She poured a little out on two fingers, gently spread it on the back of his hand in long, slow strokes, then used her thumbs to massage it in around the joints.
Oh. He’d known the carbon “skin” was tough, but he’d never imagined it could be so sensitive. Her hands were pleasantly warm, and there was something almost familiar about the feel of her textured finger-pads on him. His throat tightened and his breath came short, and the intense wave of skin-hunger that gripped him at the sheer sensuality of her touch was followed by an equally intense desire to squirm beneath her attention. He’d run into too many people, men and women both, who looked at his augs and considered him just a cool toy to be used and discarded. It was almost enough to make him push her away… but one look at her face and he knew the truth. Her eyes were closed, and she was working entirely by touch; there was nothing acquisitive about her look, nothing possessive. Adam had never seen her look that gentle—or that unguarded. In silence, she traced the lines of titanium frame and myomer fiber, fingers listening for the least hint of reluctance or withdrawal, and he drank in her touch like a desert that had long forgotten rain.

What’s the difference between an anthropologist and an archaeologist? 😃 And what do archaeologists do when they’re not digging at excavation sites?
Oooh! Okay!❤️🤩❤️
An anthropologist is a scientist who studies human beings. The ask questions like, “what makes us human?” And “How can we define ourselves as human?”
We ask these questions through four (or five if you want to get technical) categories:
Linguistics
Cultural and Social Development
Biology
Archaeology (ME!)
and Applied Anthropology
Linguistics pretty much answers how languages not only changed through time, but how they’ve influenced culture and changes in society. It’s pretty common to have Linguistic Anthropologists work in a language lab where they play with words all day. They also make it a point to connect language with reading. If you ever talk to a linguistic anthropologist, ask them about cranial cap ripples.
Biological anthropologists help with the biological and organic portion of humans and nonhumans. You get primatologists (primates), forensic experts, retired doctors, paleontologists (human evolution), molecular scientists, and those that practice alternative methods of medicine. If you ever meet a biological anthropologist, as them how many ways to Sunday you can study teeth.
Cultural Anthropologists is very open in interpretation. I say that because it’s always advancing in its field with new discoveries every day. Cultural anthropologists study social groups. They immerse themselves in artwork, written/spoken literature, music, humanities, material goods, women’s rights, gender and sexuality. and social engagement. Kinda like how it’s a Tumblr norm to say, “I like your shoelaces. Thanks, I got them from the president.” They learn behaviors and manners, physical and non-physical telling of what makes that society function. If you ever meet a cultural anthropologist, ask them what their favorite cultural greeting.
Archaeology is a field in anthropology that’s commonly classified as a “historical science.” We use the scientific method to answer questions about the past and continuously ask “why?” We’re not Indiana Jones, many of us frown upon the comparison. We’re environmentally conscious of what we do when looking through historical records and digging at different sites. You need an understanding of history, linguistics, biology, and cultural practices for what site you work at. When archaeologists aren’t digging, they’re considered “shovel bums.” They travel around from one agency to the next (if they’re freelance) and dig year-round. We practically live out of a suitcase. I’m one of the lucky ones. I’m not a shovel bum. I’ve made my archaeological work through museums and conservation labs.
Applied Anthropology is a newer branch in anthropology. They ask the question, “now what!?” They look for practical solutions. They question a bit more and ask, “now what do we do? How can we make this more efficient for humans?” If you ever meet someone in this field, ask them their stance on Cyber-Anthropology (I.E., video games, AI, robots). You’ll get a mixed bag, but you might come out wiser.
SAPIENS.ORG is an anthropological magazine that’s designed for anthropologists, as well as those who are learning/interested in the field. Free subscription. Scope them out if you’re interested! And know that I’m always up for chatting about it here. I know that I’ve gotten some DMs from yall wanting to know more about it. Know that my inbox is open.

Jerusalem, right now.
[Eric Alterman]
* * * * *
We're now seeing the final hours of Israeli democracy. Yuval Noah Harari:
To understand events in Israel, there is just one question to ask: what limits the power of the government? Robust democracies rely on a whole system of checks and balances. But Israel lacks a constitution, an upper house in the parliament, a federal structure or any other check on government power except one — the Supreme Court.
This Monday, the Netanyahu government plans to pass the first in a series of laws that will neutralise the Supreme Court. If it succeeds, it will gain unlimited power. Members of the Netanyahu coalition have already disclosed their intention to pass laws and pursue policies that will discriminate against Arab people, women, LGBTQ people and secular people. Once the Supreme Court is out of the way, nothing will remain to stop them. In such a situation, the government could also rig future elections, for example by banning Arab parties from participating — a step previously proposed by coalition members. Israel will still hold elections but these will become an authoritarian ritual rather than a free democratic contest. Government members openly brag about their intentions. They explain that since they won Israel’s last elections, it means they can now do anything they want. Like other authoritarian forces, the Israeli government doesn’t understand what democracy means. It thinks it is a dictatorship of the majority, and that those who win democratic elections are thereby granted unlimited power. In recent months I have talked with many Netanyahu supporters, and they genuinely believe that any restraint on an elected government is undemocratic. “What do you mean we cannot take away people’s basic liberties?” they say. “But we won the elections! That means we can do anything we want!” In fact, democracy means freedom and equality for all. Democracy is a system that guarantees all people certain liberties, which even the majority cannot take away.
The establishment of a dictatorship in Israel would have grave consequences not only for Israeli citizens. The ruling coalition is led by messianic religious zealots who believe in an ideology of Jewish supremacy. This calls to annex the occupied Palestinian territories to Israel without granting citizenship to the Palestinians, and ultimately dreams of destroying the al-Aqsa mosque compound — one of Islam’s holiest sites — and building a new Jewish temple in its stead. Jewish supremacy is not a fringe notion. It is represented in the coalition by the Jewish Power party and the Religious Zionism party. Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich (from the latter) has recently called to wipe out an entire Palestinian town in retaliation for the killing of two Jewish settlers.
Men like Smotrich now command one of the most formidable military machines in the world, armed with nuclear and advanced cyber weapons. For decades the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has waged a campaign to stop Iran from going nuclear, warning the world about the dangers posed by a fundamentalist regime with nuclear capabilities. Now Netanyahu is establishing exactly such a regime in Israel.
This could set fire to the entire Middle East, with consequences that will reverberate far beyond the region. It would be incredibly stupid of Israel to do something like that, but as we learnt from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we should never underestimate human stupidity. It is one of the most powerful forces in history. The good news is that in recent months a powerful resistance movement has emerged to save Israeli democracy. Rejecting the ideology of Jewish supremacy, and connecting to ancient traditions of Jewish tolerance, hundreds of thousands of Israelis are demonstrating, protesting and resisting in every nonviolent way we know. Since Friday, more than 10,000 army reservists — including hundreds of air force pilots, cyber warfare experts, and commanders of elite units — have publicly declared that they will not serve a dictatorship, and that they will therefore suspend their service if the judiciary overhaul continues. By this Tuesday, the famed Israeli air force — which relies to a large extent on reservists — may be partially grounded.
To appreciate the magnitude of this step, it should be recalled that military service is a sacred duty for many Israelis. In a country that emerged from the ashes of the Holocaust, and that has faced existential threats for decades, the army has always been off-limits in political controversies. This is no longer the case. Former chiefs of the Israeli army, air force and security services have publicly called on soldiers to stop serving. Veterans of Israel’s many wars are saying this is the most important struggle of their lives. The Netanyahu government tries to depict this as a military coup, but it is the exact opposite. Israeli soldiers aren’t taking up arms to oppose the government — they are laying them down. They explain that their contract is with the Israeli democracy, and once democracy expires — so does their contract.
The feeling that the social contract has been broken has also led universities, labour unions, high-tech companies and other private businesses to threaten more strikes if the government continues with its antidemocratic power-grab. Israelis understand the potential damage to our country. As the so-called Start-Up Nation is closing down, investors around the world are pulling money out. The internal damage is even greater. Fear and hatred now dominate relations between different sections of society, as the social contract is ripped to shreds. Government members call the demonstrators and army reservists “traitors”, and demand that force be used to crush the opposition. Israelis worry that we might be days away from civil war. But the hundreds of thousands of us protesting in the streets feel we have no choice. It is our duty to ourselves, to Jewish tradition and to humanity to prevent the rise of a Jewish supremacist dictatorship. We are standing in the streets, because we cannot do otherwise if we are to save Israeli democracy.

Reminder that stoking anti-Muslim prejudice is one of the stated goals of Russian psyops. Just a few examples...
"The GRU Threat Group...used social media to impersonate Islamic State users and intimidate military wives. Several women, likely identified by their public roles on military issues, received individualized death threats on Facebook and Twitter from Cyber Caliphate, a now-defunct loose association of hacking groups that claimed to operate on behalf of ISIL. Cybersecurity experts and intelligence services of at least three Western countries have identified the Cyber Caliphate as one of Russia’s proxies. In one case, an account for the charity Military Spouses of Strength, which was operated by one of the targeted women, was hacked and exploited to broadcast threats to others. The campaign was intended to inflate perceptions of the Islamic State threat in much the same way the IRA trolls operated around the 2016 preosidential campaign—and potentially to deflect attention away from Russia’s actions in Ukraine..."
– "Russian Disinformation Efforts on Social Media," Rand Corporation and US Air Force, 2022, page 76
Yes, Ao3 is down because of a cybersecurity attack.
Yes, the group is claiming to be Sudanese Muslims (Sudan Anonymous). No, this is not true.
This group has been identified as a Russian hacker group intent on sowing dissent between the world under the guise of “strengthening Middle East relations”. They targeted Ao3 because of its pro-LGBTQIA+ stories. Again, they are Russians sowing anger.
Do NOT be Islamophobic. Do NOT use this as an opportunity to whine about how you didn’t have time to finish reading a fic.
Ao3 is run by volunteers who are currently under siege by Russian hackers. Take this time to step back from the site, appreciate their work, write your own fics, or read a physical book.
If I see ANY Islamophobic rhetoric by any of my followers, I will pop your dumbass into my shit list and block you into the high heavens.

A BIRN analysis of hundreds of videos uploaded by TikTok users in eight Balkan countries shows the platform has become a hub for abuse of women and girls based on their appearance and actual or perceived sexual behaviour - ‘slutshaming’.
Seven years ago, when she was 13, Nora took a picture of herself in the mirror, wearing sports shorts and top after basketball practice, and shared it with her friends on Snapchat. It was when a boy from another class in her Kosovo school reshared the picture - without her consent - that the abuse began.
Attacked by older girls, sexualised by boys, the ‘slutshaming’ spread from one social media platform to another.
“The shaming and targeting were a heavy burden, especially for a 13-,14-year-old child,” Nora [not her real name] told BIRN.
Nora agreed to speak after responding to an online BIRN questionnaire concerning slutshaming – a phenomenon defined by the European Institute for Gender Equality, EIGE, as “stigmatising women and girls on the basis of their appearance, sexual availability, and actual or perceived sexual behaviour”.
Sipping tea on a cold December day in Pristina, she said the abuse had restarted, this time on TikTok, where an account with over 3,300 followers and 96,000 likes had taken photos of her and her boyfriend from their social media profiles and reshared them as video slideshows with derogatory comments.
As of February, the account featured 142 videos with more than eight million views, in many cases abusing Kosovo girls or women, including Nora and her friends.
Based on content analysis and interviews with experts, BIRN has found that TikTok is being used across the Balkans to abuse women and girls for the most ordinary of activities – taking pictures, making videos, going out or dancing.
Over the course of several weeks, BIRN identified 427 videos posted between September 2020 and November 2023 and which ‘slutshame’ girls and women; the videos were shared by accounts in Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. In total, the videos have been viewed more than 30 million times, each garnering dozens, sometimes hundreds of abusive comments.
None of the eight countries analysed defines cyberbullying as a separate criminal offence, meaning that slutshaming must be punished under other criminal violations such as gender-based hate speech, stalking, or the unauthorised sharing of someone else’s photos.
In late October, the European Parliament’s women’s rights and gender equality committee called for the phenomenon to be defined within legislation on hate speech and hate crime. Of the eight countries analysed for this story, only Croatia and Slovenia are members of the EU.
Altin Hazizaj, the executive director of the NGO Children’s Human Rights Centre of Albania, CRCA, which combats cyber violence against minors, told BIRN that the first slutshaming case reported to its hotline ‘I Sigurt’ [Safe] happened on YouTube in 2016. But TikTok has since taken over.
“The more popular the platform, the more cases of slutshaming and online sexual violence against children there will be,” said Hazizaj. Frequently, the perpetrator knows the person they are targeting and the motive is to “conquer” them.
TikTok did not respond to requests for comment.
When everyday activities attract abuse
Tumblr media
Illustration. The 427 TikTok videos analysed by BIRN fall into four categories:direct targeting of random users or women and girls (318 videos), slutshaming culture (51 videos), videos taken in public places (30 videos), and slutshaming of public figures (18 videos). BIRN via Canva
The content BIRN identified includes photos or videos of women and girls engaged in ordinary, everyday activities, virtually or in real life, including dancing, singing, hanging out, or taking part in social media trends.
In most cases, the targets were also shamed and called derogatory names by other users who left comments.
One of the videos BIRN analysed featured Nora and her friends taking part in a TikTok lip-syncing trend that was re-shared without their consent and with specific insults for each individual. The abusive language carried over into the subsequent comments.
“No matter how many times we report it, the account has not been closed down,” said Nora. “With Instagram it was different because usually we could close the accounts after a number of individuals reported it.”
In neighbouring Albania, a woman who has over 1,000 followers and 75,000 views on TikTok regularly takes aim at female public sector employees, accusing them of using sex to climb the career ladder.
Six of the videos identified by BIRN featured random women dancing in nightclubs.
The methodology
Using a method based on Bellingcat’s Hashtag Analysis Algorithm and personalised for BIRN by Albanian IT experts Klodian Maloku and Erjon Curraj of Science & Innovation for Development, BIRN employed hashtag analysis for the word ‘kurve’, meaning ‘slut’ in most of the languages spoken in the countries of the Balkans. BIRN used direct search and TikTok’s own machine learning algorithm and also gathered the personal testimonies of women and non-binary persons via its Engaged Citizens Reporting tool, ECR.
A total of 427 videos from 43 TikTok accounts were identified from eight Balkan countries, shared on TikTok from September 2020 to November 2023.
BIRN used Google Lens to assist in identifying the language and translating the captions in the photos/videos, content descriptions, and/or comments.
The videos can be divided into four categories: – direct targeting of private/random users or individuals, mostly women and girls – derogatory videos of women and girls in public places – shaming for the perceived immorality of actions and/or clothing of public figures (mostly women) – general slutshaming content
BIRN identified and analysed the videos between mid-December 2023 and late January 2024. During this period an account in Montenegro and one in Slovenia deleted all its content.
Three-quarters of the videos, 318, targeted random TikTok users or persons by mainly re-posting videos. They included explanations of why their targets, mostly women and/or girls, deserve to be called ‘sluts’. The majority of the comments are supportive of the accounts and add to the cyberbullying.
BIRN concluded that 50 of these videos directly slutshame girls between the ages of 12 and 17 and 44 included homophobic and racial slurs.
Fine Line Between Virtuality and Reality
Experts and victims say slutshaming can seriously harm the mental health of those targeted.
On February 12 this year, police in Albanian said they had arrested a 39-year-old man for “causing the suicide” of a 27-year-old woman.
“This citizen allegedly published an intimate photo (on TikTok) of the 27-year-old woman, who threw herself from a 4th floor terrace allegedly for this reason and died as a result of her injuries,” the police said.
Local media then proceeded to republish the photo, drawing condemnation from women’s rights groups.
Just a month earlier, another woman in Albania, 41-year-old Bedrie Loka, died after drinking a poisonous toxin. Initially, the cause of her suicide was attributed to derogatory content targeting Loka on TikTok via an account that media later reported was set up by her cousin.
Days later, however, Loka’s husband, Xhemal, was arrested on suspicion of “causing suicide”. Local media published videos, made by their children, of Xhemal abusing his wife; reports quoted the children saying their father had frequently threatened her.
The impact of slutshaming or other forms of gender-based violence on mental health is the same whether it happens online or offline, said Bind Skeja, executive director of the Kosovo-based Centre for Information and Social Improvement, which works on mental health issues.
“Individuals who start to think about suicide are usually in a situation where they feel there is no way out,” Skeja said. Invariably, the responsibility to find a way out falls on the victim, when it should be on society and mental health professionals, he told BIRN.
“We should deal with the perpetrators in a proactive manner; mental health work should directly involve removing risk factors”.
One respondent to the BIRN questionnaire, a non-binary person in North Macedonia, said ongoing slutshaming had caused them “depression; anxiety; a vicious cycle of unhealthy romantic relationships; and also trauma”.
“I was exposed on social media with photos which were considered to be ‘provocative’ and many people were sharing them, including online media, as back then I was part of a student movement in my home country.”
Nora, who was first targeted when she was 13, said her family supported her, but other families had taken a different approach.
“Many girls I know, since their families found out about the slutshaming, have been under strong parental control and their mental health deteriorated,” she said.
Legal limitations
Neither slutshaming nor cyberbullying is a separate criminal violation in any of the eight countries covered by this article, but they can be tackled under legislation covering other violations.
Often, however, the authorities only act when it is already too late.
On February 19, Albanian Interior Minister Taulant Balla met TikTok’s Director of Public Policy and Government Relations for Central and Eastern Europe, Jakub Olek, to request a contact point for Albanian police and increased monitoring of Albanian-language content.
In the wake of Loka’s suicide, Albanian Justice Minister Ulsi Manja took to Facebook to call on Albanian society to react to cyberbullying, “starting from our children and families, and not wait for the next victim after Bedrie Loka; as a state we should review our laws”.
Laws can be “easily fixed”, Hazizaj said. But in most cases “institutions are not capable of offering protection due to limitations in human capacities, which increases the lack of trust in institutions”.
Nora told BIRN that, in her case, at least six people had tried to report the abusive accounts to the Kosovo police. The response is always the same, she said: “The IP addresses of the accounts’ owners cannot be detected without direct contact with the account.”
Hate speech based on gender or sexual orientation features in the criminal codes of Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo; Albania’s refers only to hate speech based on sexual orientation; in Montenegro, the criminal code mentions hate speech based on gender or sexual orientation only as “aggravating” factors.
In North Macedonia, Nikola Prokopenko, a state counsellor in the justice ministry, said that parliament had amended the Criminal Code in February 2023 to criminalise ‘cyberbullying and gender-based violence’ under ‘Endangering security’, ‘Stalking’, ‘Sexual harassment’, ‘Causing national, racial or religious hate, discord and intolerance’, and ‘Spreading Racist and Xenophobic Material by Means of Computer System’.
Petra Cop, public relations officer at the Slovenian justice ministry, told BIRN that “cyberbullying is determined in the Criminal Code as the criminal offence of stalking”.
Rolanda Stafa, information rights coordinator at Albania’s justice ministry, told BIRN that “the criminal legislation does not expressly provide for cyberbullying as a criminal violation,” adding that it also “does not categorise concrete criminal violations based on gender”. Criminal acts of “Insult”, “Defamation”, “Unfair interference in private life”, and “Stalking” are punishable even in “cases of online postings, comments, or in any other form that may affect the dignity and the morals of a person of any gender,” Stafa said.
Montenegro and Serbia also have criminalised stalking by ‘other means of communication’. Kosovo has a similar explanation under the criminal violation Harassment.
Cop, from the Slovenian ministry, said that “certain aspects of cyberbullying may also be covered by the criminal offence of criminal coercion and criminal offence of threat, depending on the actual situation of specific cases”. Moreover, “in connection with gender based violence, the criminal offence of public incitement to hatred, violence or intolerance… even if it is committed by publication in mass media or on the websites… is relevant,” Cop said in an emailed reply to BIRN.
The Croatian justice ministry told BIRN that cyberbullying falls under several criminal violations defined in the Croatian Criminal Code, including Threat, Intrusive Behaviour, Insult, Defamation, Violation of a Child’s Privacy, Public incitement to Violence and Hatred. The perpetrator faces more severe punishment if the crime is committed through “the press, radio, television, computer system or network, at a public meeting or in another way and becomes accessible to a larger number of people,” the ministry said in an emailed response.
The justice ministries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia did not respond to requests for comment. All four countries have criminalised the ‘Unauthorised Publication and Presentation of another’s Texts, Portraits and Recordings’.
Croatia and Montenegro have criminalised the ‘Unauthorised Use of Personal Data’.
As for Bosnia and Herzegovina, neither state-level law nor law at the level of the country’s two entities recognise cyberbullying as a term, said legal expert Aleksandar Jokic.
“But this can be covered with various crimes prescribed by those [Criminal] Codes,” Jokic told BIRN. “It is matter for the prosecutor whether each act of cyberbullying will be prosecuted or not. Not every act of cyberbullying could be qualified as a crime.” Bosnia’s Republika Srpska entity has criminalised the ‘unauthorised publication and display of other people’s writing, portraits and recordings’.
Fisnik Xhelili, from the NGO Mollekuqja in North Macedonia, said state institutions “are not doing enough because in the digital world the regulations are not well defined in our country, and even where there are regulations in place, they are not properly implemented”.
Victims of gender-based violence with whom his NGO is in touch say police told them to “just go home”, Xhelili told BIRN.
“Comments and perpetrator support hurt me most”
Nora’s plight has also hit her younger sister, who has been bullied at school because of the TikTok content targeting her sibling.
The abusive account is still online, and still receiving words of encouragement from followers.
“What kills me the most is when I see comments that deal with rumours. Instead of reporting the account to close it down, they give it material to continue,” she said.
“The account took a photo of my best friend from her social media and shared it together with the photo of a boy, praising him and calling her very disgusting names. People in the comments love it but she doesn’t even know him”.
Besarta Breznica, gender-based violence programme officer at the NGO Kosovo’s Women Network, said that “women and non-binary persons are often blamed based on the way they dress or behave, which adds to the rape culture and is preceded by a patriarchal mentality”.
Indeed, Hazizaj from Albania told BIRN that in many cases they found out that the slutshamers were a group of boys who would sexually harass the girls in real life.
“It starts with slutshaming to be able to reach them physically, so it is often the step before potential rape,” he said.
According to Breznica, besides the lack of a legal framework, “the victims have difficulty talking about this type of violence in the family and an even harder time reporting it to the authorities”.
The non-binary person who responded to BIRN’s questionnaire said they had not told their parents or legal guardians or any other family members.
“I was afraid they would blame me; they wouldn’t understand,” they said.
According to Skeja, the more the content gathers engagement, the greater the fear felt by the victims that their family might find out, leading to them feeling “pressured and oppressed” over photos they may have felt originally “empowered” by.
In most cases, said Hazizaj, when the abuse is criminal, the victims are too afraid to go to the police.
“My father will kill me,” he quoted many as saying. Without communication within the family, the victim bears the burden of the bullying alone.
“It is not only online shaming, but in the family, in work, and so on,” he said.
Nora said she fears for the future.
“What bothers me more at this point is that it is happening continuously, currently on a larger scale,” she told BIRN. “What will happen when I try to become part of the labour force and they see this content with one simple search online?”
“It is systematic, the same words, the same targeting, the same humiliation over and over again”.

Firestorm erupts over requiring women to sign up for military draft

Senate Democrats have added language to the annual defense authorization bill to require women to register for the draft, prompting a backlash from Republicans and social conservatives and complicating the chances of moving the bill on the Senate floor before Election Day.
Conservatives led by Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) are certain to attempt to remove the provision requiring women to register for the draft, which could present a tough vote for Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and other Democrats in tight reelection races.
Republican candidate Sam Brown, who is running against Rosen, is already making it an issue in the Nevada Senate race.
Brown, an Army veteran who was severely burned by an improvised explosive device explosion, slammed Rosen in a video for voting to require women to sign up for the draft.
“Look at my face. This is the high cost of war,” he posted recently on the social platform X.
“Amy and I volunteered to serve, and we honor all who serve,” he wrote, referring to his wife. “But forcing America’s daughters to register for the draft is UNACCEPTABLE. Shame on Jacky Rosen.”
In the video posted below those comments, Brown pointed to the scarring on his face as evidence of the dangers women would face in combat theaters.
“Look at my face. This is the high cost of war and I just found out that Jacky Rosen voted this week to make signing up for the draft mandatory for our daughters. You’ll be hearing more from me on this,” he said.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) called the provision requiring women to sign up for the draft “insane.”
He accused the Biden administration of trying to implement a woke agenda at the Pentagon.
“There shouldn’t be women in the draft. They shouldn’t be forced to serve if they don’t want to,” he said on Fox News. He criticized Democrats for wanting to experiment with the military, saying “normal people are like, ‘Leave our daughters alone.’”
Hawley led efforts to strip language requiring women to sign up for the draft from the defense authorization bill in 2021 and 2022.
A group affiliated with former Vice President Mike Pence also weighed in on the issue Wednesday.
The group, Advancing American Freedom, wrote a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declaring that “the notion of the United States of America requiring women to register to fight our wars is simply untenable and must be opposed at all costs.”
Wicker, the top-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he’ll try to strip it out of the bill.
“I’m opposed to that. I don’t think this is the time to get into a debate on the floor of either house about that. We’re not anywhere near implementing a draft, and to me it’s a distraction when we need to be talking about real issues that are immediate,” he said.
“I hope it will fall out, either on the floor or in conference,” he added.
But Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jack Reed (D-R.I.) defended the proposed policy change, arguing that women can hold many warfighting positions without serving as front-line infantry troops.
“Women are doing a remarkable job in our forces today, and if we were in a situation requiring a draft, I think we would need all able-bodied citizens 18 and above,” he said.
“If we go to a draft, that means we’re in a serious, serious situation,” he added.
“It’s not like World War II where we need a lot of infantry. We need cyber experts, we need intelligence analysts, linguists, etc. Wait a second, there are a lot of women out there that can do this better than men,” he argued.
He said the intense GOP opposition to the proposal “just doesn’t make any sense.”
Senate aides point out the issue cuts across party lines, with some Republicans generally supportive of requiring women to sign up for the Selective Service System, just like men when they turn 18.
Senate Republicans are already raising doubts about whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will even bring the bill to the floor anytime soon, given the dwindling number of days on the legislative calendar before the election.
“I do hope we get to the floor. It’s very important we have this debate publicly. … I hear rumblings that the Democratic leader may not bring it to the floor, I hope that can be reversed,” Wicker said.
McConnell on Monday urged Schumer to bring the defense bill to the floor “without delay.”
The Republican leader hailed the Senate Armed Services Committee for marking up the defense bill earlier this month but then suggested Democrats may drag out the process of bringing it to the floor.
“But shortly after the committee’s action, senior Senate Democrats shattered any expectation that they were ready to start taking the requirements of the national defense seriously,” he said.
Voting to require women to make themselves eligible for the draft could come back to bite Democrats in Republican-leaning or battleground states, such as Montana and Nevada.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines (R-Mont.) seized on the issue in the last Congress when he backed an amendment in 2022 to remove a provision requiring women to register for the Selective Service System from the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
“Brave Montana men and women carry out the Treasure State’s rich legacy of service by voluntarily joining our nation’s military. There is no need to force our nation’s daughters to enter the draft,” Daines said at the time.
Hawley offered an amendment to strike the women’s draft language from the NDAA in 2021. His action put pressure on Democrats to ultimately remove the issue from the bill without voting on the amendment in December of that year.
He also sponsored an amendment to the defense bill in 2022 to remove language requiring women to register for the Selective Service System, which was co-sponsored by Republican Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Mike Lee (Utah), Marco Rubio (Fla.), Roger Marshall (Kan.), John Boozman (Ark.), James Lankford (Okla.) and Daines.

Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye | Morgan State University | Hate speech | misogyny | Mocking rape | Genocide denial
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye is a PhD holder and a Morgan State University graduate who spent the entire Tigray genocide period spewing racist misogynist violent content and hate speech on Twitter using different accounts and stolen women’s photos. The latest in our series of members of Ethipia’s academic elite who used their education to tirelessly support the Ethiopian government during its campaign of rape and murder, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye who is supposedly an expert in IT operated numerous accounts even as Twitter blocked and banned them for mocking rape victims. He had no sympathy even as 600,000 Tigrayans died from the genocide he supported. Until this day he continues with extremely racist content that targets Tigrayans, Somalis and Ukrainians.
Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye described himself as a “cyber security and data science researcher,” as well as an “educator and innovator,” on his original Twitter profile. When the genocide of Tigrayans began in 2020, he began to dedicate more and more of his time to using Twitter for hate speech, denying war crimes and spreading racism. But as his foul conduct would likely geet him in trouble in the work force, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye decided to change his Twitter handle, Twitter name and profile picture in order to engage in abusive disgusting behavior online without revealing his identity.
Unfortunately for him, Tigrayan online investigators were able to easily identify his identity despite him being a self declared cyber security expert. More on that later.
In 2021, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye changed his handle from @RasWonde to @GraceHoneyPot and his Twitter name to Grace. He engaged in catphishing by stealing the photograph of a young woman in Addis Ababa and pretending to be her (we are not identifying the woman, but we want to make it clear she has nothing to do with Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye’s online activities).
With the persona of a young woman, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye began to mock rape victims of the Tigray genocide. Ethiopian and Eritrean soldiers gang raped hundreds of thousands of women during the war, and rape victims still suffer as a result today. Horrific reports of the suffering of rape victims, many who contracted HIV, were raped over a period of days or weeks, had foreign objects inserted into them, or had their reproductive organs burned while being mocked with genocidal violence shocked the world.
In response to such horrors, in May 2021, using his fake name @gracehoneypot, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye used disgusting language to mock Tigrayan rape victims saying:
“TIP: Every time TPLFites call you names like "Donkey", ask them "How does it feel like to be f**ked by a Donkey ?"  😛 Sorry not sorry 🤷‍♀️” a link to this disgusting tweet: https://web.archive.org/web/20210504185813/https:/twitter.com/GraceHoneypot/status/1389655182359900170
In response to a tweet by Kenneth Roth of Human Rights Watch who expressed sadness about the reports of gang rapes of women by up to 10 Ethiopian soldiers, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye quoted and wrote:
"sometimes as many as 10 men waiting their turn to rape her." At least make the story plausible. You made it as if she was the only woman available in Tigray. dum dum dum” link to this tweet: https://web.archive.org/web/20210314043527/https:/twitter.com/GraceHoneypot/status/1370956686811398144
By using the picture of a young woman in Addis Ababa, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye endangered her by using her image to spread extremely violent tweets which mocked rape victims. Tigrayans complained and reported the account, but nothing happened. As the trauma from reports of vulnerable rape and genocide victims in Tigray caused trauma for Tigrayans around the world, Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye used his platform which had tens of thousands of followers to insult them with language that is not fit for someone who is supposedly educated with a phD.
#FakeTigrayRape and #faketigraygenocide were some of the hashtags Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye used when engaging in misogyny online.
As a small brained, disgusting, misogynist, insecure man, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye went after women who were outspoken or critical about the gang rapes that were carried out against Tigrayan women. Unable to intimidate them, he repeatedly harassed them online in an attempt to force them off the platform.
In response to reporting by the CNN’s Nima Elbagir who had found out that Tigrayan men were targeted in genocidal killings near the border with Sudan a very angry Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye claimed the reports were false and that the bodies of dead rebel fighters were being identified as civilians and dumped in a single place for Nima to fake a massacre, misinformation that Ethiopian government supporters were spreading for most of the genocide. He kept denying reports of atrocities and genocide with no evidence but blind rage and hatred, as even if journalists from around the world were confirming the reports.
In response to artificial intelligence expert Dr. Timnit Gebru repeatedly condemning the rape and genocide, Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye used his account to tag her and call her “a virgin.” Social media users now say that Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye had repeatedly targeted Dr. Timnit because of her superior expertise in IT, a field that Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye specializes in and the idea of him trailing far behind a woman in every aspect clearly hurt him deeply. The disgusting misogynist insult did not intimidate Dr. Timnit Gebru.
He also targeted Meaza Gidey Gebremedhin a Tigrayan and another formidable woman who spoke out and condemned the genocide. Likely burning and insecure about Meaza being able to attend powerful summits and platforms, Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye called her “a little satan.”
When Russia invaded Ukraine, Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye began commenting on Russian affairs siding with Russia and referring to Ukrainian fighters as “Nazis” and “bitches.” His opinion on the invasion of Ukraine was “The west allied to fight the Nazi to crown themselves as the better Nazi not coz they are against fascism!” Once he referred to the TDF Tigray fighters in Tigray and Ukrainian soldiers as nazis fighting for the west.
He denied massacres and human suffering. He attacked a journalist for the AFP Robbie Corey-Boulet because he reported on killings of Tigrayan civilians. Robbie’s reporting revealed that new massacres and displacement were taking place in Humera. But Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye called it “another fake Humera massacre.”
Instead he kept spreading misinformation saying that all the dead civilians in the massacre reports were really dead fighters whose bodies were being carried to locations to look like a massacre.
In September 2021 when Al Jazeera produced a report confirming that women were still being raped and victims of horrible sexual violence weaponized by soldiers Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye said “They are now regurgitating their old videos and playing victims once again.” Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye’s obsession with mocking the rape victims was shocking and disgusting.
After almost two years of denying genocide and mocking journalism genocide reports Twitter finally suspended Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye’s fake @GraceHoneyPot account.
But he immediately opened a new account also named Grace, with a new handle @adeniumobesum_ and made it clear that this was his new one because the old one was suspended.
He stole the photograph of another young woman and continue to catphish believing that no one would know of his true identity. This account remains active and he is using the photograph of a young Italy based Eritrean woman who has nothing to do with his Twitter activity. Again, because he is pretending to be the women in his photographs, the real women may possibly be endangered by his use of violent, racist genocidal language with their photographs.
When Tigrayans learned of his real identity, Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye panicked and because he thinks he is a cybersecurity expert, he believed the only way it was possible was that Twitter employees secretly handed his data to Tigrayan activists. He tweeted threatening to sue Twitter employees who he thought exposed him.
But the truth is Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye was not a smart man. Instead of using a new account for his bad activities, he used his original account by renaming the account. So by searching for the account history, it was easy to find that the @GraceHoneyPot account that he used to mock rape victims for two years was originally his @RasWonde account.
Some evidence is here. Look at this link https://web.archive.org/web/20210103144721/twitter.com/RasWonde/status/1345743224074358785
This link with “ras wonde” in it leads to a tweet he made in 3rd January 2021. It is his original account and you can see his real photo, his real name in Amharic and his original handle.
But then a few weeks later he tweeted this 24 January 2021.
This link also has “ras wonde.” In this picture, he changed the photo to the stolen one of the young women, but he did not change the handle yet. So we can see his original @RasWonde handle with the stolen photo and the fake name Grace.
On 25 January 2021 he tweeted with this link and the new handle: https://web.archive.org/web/20210125005720/https://twitter.com/GraceHoneypot/status/1353507057266274311
But he forgot to change the old bio from @Raswonde and it still say “AI for cyber security researcher, educator, innovator.” In the pictures below, you can see the same tweets for both @Raswonde and even @Gracehoneypot. So if you want to steal women’s photos and use Twitter to attack and harass women and rape victims the lesson is you should not use your own account!
Nowadays with the genocide in Tigray slowing down Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye focuses his energy on racism and hate speech targeting Somali people. Using his new account @adeniumobesum he uses disgusting racist stereotype language and calls Somali people by using an ethnic slur “zoomali” which is very offensive to Somali people and culture. He spent the last year using this term and spreading racism against them and also calling them bitches.
He also uses xenophobia and islamophobia against them.
One tweet read:
“Zoomali eating banana like a monkey and stateless. You guys kill each other like the worst epidemic and still practice the Abrhamic religion, Islam.” Here is the link: https://x.com/AdeniumObesum_/status/1645292412451934208
Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye is an insecure, evil, disgusting misogynist. He spent years of his life dedicated to mocking victims of a genocide that left 600,000 people dead. His hatred of women who were not intimidated or afraid of him triggered an anger in him that led him to an obsession with women journalists, activists and anti genocide voices. He tried to pretend to be a woman, using the faces he stole through catphishing. In the end, Tigrayan women are the ones who exposed his real identity.
He is just another member of Ethiopia’s educated elite who used his education for genocidal purposes, siding with rapists against girls and women.
N.B reminder that the women seen in the photographs of Mr. Wondimu Kassahun Zegeye twitter accounts HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS TWITTER ACTIVITY! They did not consent to their images being used in this disgusting way, which is illegal and a violation of their rights.
