Whore's Glory
The first thing that struck me about the film is the chronological order in which the stories of the different prostitutes were placed. First we are shown Thailand, then Bangladesh and the last is Mexico. There is a stark contrast between them.
The Thai prostitutes seem somewhat content with their line of work. They are chosen for work by sitting down in a "fish tank" type of room with different numbers pinned to their clothing. The men enter a room adjacent where they can see the prostitutes through a window. The girls are happily chatting hoping to get picked. They even talk about having crushes on "Johns". Those that are picked happily escort the customer with arms linked out of the building by means of an elevator. The boss of the brothel is a man and he answers many of the frequently asked questions of the customers such as how far a certain girl is willing to go to satisfy a client.Β
"We have to enjoy what we do, otherwise, it would make us unhappy."
The Bangladesh girls are living in a slum. The building they live in is composed of many bedrooms in which they live and work. The Mexian prositutes are working alongside a dirt road and many of them are shown or alluded to being addicted to hard drugs. The movie chooses to leave out high tier brothels and instead focus on mid-range Thailand and assumably the worst conditions in Mexico and Bangladesh. The two latter show girls who are forced or coerced into the occupation.
The prostitute's voices are juxtaposed with that of the customers. There is shame and misery on the girl's end and braggocious, animalistic commentary on that of the men.Β
It is truly heartwrenching and shocking to see the conditions in which girls my age, younger, and older are forced to live and work. I'm not sure if I can put into words how this affected my emotions. I experienced profound sadness.
