Una Familia De Oruguitas Ch. 4
Ch. 1, Ch 2, Ch 3, x, Ch 5, Ch6,
Chapter Four: Hay creecer a parte y volver (you have to grow apart and come back)
A/n: This is a pretty long chapter, I used Mijo which means my child, I know I accidentally used Mija one chapter but I fixed that. I also made it so that y/n and Isabela have a good relationship, I will add more to that in later chapters!
Summary: Y/n goes with Maribel into their father's "vision cave" in hopes of finding answers.

On Ao3!
The tiles on the floor nibbled at your hip, trying to wake you up. You groaned as you heard your cousins moving around at the bottom of the stairs. You slowly stood up, your limbs stiff from falling asleep in that position. You stretched, pulling your arms high in the air. You walked down the steps and after being in the light for about ten seconds Mirabel ran up to you.
“Y/n!” she whisper-yelled, “I’m going to save the magic!”
“How are you going to do that?” you asked, straightening your clothes as you walked with her.
“I’m going to ask Dolores if she heard anything,” she placed a hand on the railing as you both walked down the stairs.
“You’re just gonna make it up as you go?” you said, galloping down the steps, trying to wake yourself up as much as possible.
“Yeah pretty much,” she shrugged, “and I want you to be my partner in crime!”
She pivoted on her heel so she was facing you, “I dunno if I can do too much to help.”
“Sure you can!” she patted your arm, “look, you were the first and only one to believe me that the magic is going out. Can you please help me?”
“No!” You wanted to scream, “Not everyone has the luxury of running around doing nothing all day! I can’t let Abuela down!”
“I-” suddenly you remembered a more important perspective, “I’ll try, but no promises, I have a lot of chores to do today.”
“Whooo!” She cheered jumping up, “Let’s get to breakfast so we can start our investigation!”
“You go ahead I’ll be right behind you,” you said taking a step back.
She cast you a weird look and shrugged, “okay, but you better hurry before Camilo eats all the food.” As she scurried off to probably bother Dolores you sat against a wall and sighed. Yesterday’s events made you feel like your battery started at zero.
“She’s lucky I remembered papa,” you whispered to yourself.
…
Before your papa disappeared, he had tucked you in, “Mijo, can you make me a promise?”
“Sí papa,” you said eagerly, wanting an excuse to be up later, even if just a minute.
“Can you watch over tus primos y tías for me?”
“Why would I when you’re right here?” you giggled.
“Because I need to leave for a while,”
You felt your six-year-old self felt their heart break, “No papa! You can’t leave!”
“Lo siento mijo,” he sighed pressing a kiss to your forehead, “I need to, in order to keep you and Mirabel safe. Can you make the promise for me?”
After a moment of thought, you look up at him with watery eyes. Your need to prove yourself started the moment you asked him to see your future, “Sí papa,” you sighed.
“Gracias mijo,” he gave you one last hug as he properly tucked you in and left.
…
You huffed as you stood up, pushing yourself off of the wall. You jogged ahead to go eat outside. You quickly grabbed a plate and sat between Isabela and Dolores. You weren’t even listening to what Abuela was saying, you just ate as you hear a choir of chairs scraping around and the occasional squeak from Dolores.
“He wants five babies,” Dolores mumbled, which snapped you out of it. You looked over at Isabela who looked unsettled, you made a note to talk to her about it later. Breakfast was just overall a blur of you wishing you got more sleep and a bunch of talk about Mariano. As soon as you were dismissed you saw Mirabel chase after Luisa, maybe she won’t need your help for a while.
“Hey Isa,” you said grabbing her plate for her, “do you have a minute to talk in about ten minutes?”
“I might have to check my schedule,” she said sarcastically.
“I expect nothing less,” you laughed, grabbing a few more plates.
“Hmm, seems like I’m free then,” she said after looking up at nothing in particular, “wanna just meet in my room?”
“Sure see you then,” you called as she walked away. You followed Julieta and Pepa into the kitchen with a pile of dishes.
You quickly washed your pile and went to go talk to Isabela but Tia Pepa called out for you, “y/n?”
“Yes Tia Pepa?” you asked, turning around quickly.
“Are you doing alright?” you ignored the cloud that floated above her head, “you seem more down recently.”
“Oh I’m fine tia,” you sighed, “I just haven’t been getting much sleep.”
“Sobrina, take an arepa,” tia Julieta said, pressing one into your hand, “you should spend today getting rest.”
“Ah these chores aren’t going to do themselves!” you said, walking backward towards the door, “Thanks for the arepa!”
You ran up to Isabela’s room and knocked a few times before entering. You were never particularly fond of her room. You knew how much she was pressured to be perfect and seeing all of these nice flowers made you feel uneasy. “You’re late,” she said, lowering her bed.
“Ya’know how it is,” you shrugged, “chores went a bit over. I hope you still have time to talk.”
“I always have time for you,” she laughed as she patted her bed, “what’s on your mind? I noticed you were out of it during breakfast today.”
“Ah, no I’m just a bit tired,” you mumbled, “I was more worried about you. And this marriage thing with Mariano. You don’t actually wanna marry him do you?”
“Oh, well I-” she paused and looked at the hands in her lap, “I do want to marry him, I have my reasons.”
“Are you sure because-” you began.
“Tio Bruno said that the life of my dreams would be mine,” she huffed, “so by marrying him, I’ll get the life of my dreams.”
“Or, get this, maybe doing what you want will make the prophecy come true!” you gasped, stretching your arms out to emphasize your point.
“No,” she scoffed, “that’ll only make things harder.”
“Your life’s not gonna get better if you’re holding yourself back,” you said, voice rising with anger.
“Well it won’t get better if I disobey Abuela!” she yelled, standing up.
“It’ll only get worse if you-” you began, interrupted by a small knock from the door.
“I should talk to Abuela,” she muttered, straightening her dress, “we need to prepare for the proposal.” With that she walked out of her room, leaving you and her roses. As you walked out you felt the lack of sleep brush up against you, settling on your shoulders. Before you shut the door you plucked one of her roses and pulled a petal from it. You walked over to your papa’s door again, knowing you wouldn’t get any more sleep in your room.
Just before you sat down on the steps you heard someone whisper your name. You turned around and saw Mirabel creeping up the stairs, “what are you doing here?” you whispered back.
“Luisa said she felt it too!” she all but yelled, “then she told me that tio bruno had a vision before he left! I was thinking it could tell us a lot about the magic-”
“No!” you yelled. You placed yourself in front of the door and held your arms out, “this place is off-limits and even if you could go in here why would you want to see that awful vision?”
“Because it can-” she stopped and looked at you with wide eyes, “wait have you seen it?”
“Well no,” your arms sagged a bit, “but he told me he was leaving because of it so it has to be pretty bad!”
“y/n,” she began, “you should know why I have to see it.” You did know, but you also knew the vision could endanger both of you.
You chewed on your lip and thought for a moment more, “okay, but let’s go in together.”
She smiled and placed her hand on your arm, “so how often have you been inside?”
“Since papa left,” you said holding your breath, “nunca.”
She pressed her lips together and said, “well I’ll let you do the honors then.” After hesitating for a moment you turned the handle and tried to push the door open. Realizing you needed more strength you pressed your side to the door and pushed with your legs. As you stumbled in you looked around, it felt emptier than you remember. As Mirabel came in, you realized you were met with a wall of running sand.
“Casita,” Mirabel said, letting the sand run over her hand, “can you turn off the sand?” The tiles in front of his room began clanking widely, “you can’t help in here?” They clanked even more.
“Well, I guess that leaves us,” you said, sticking your arm in the sand to see how far it goes. Before you could say anything else Mirabel walked headfirst into the sand. You jumped back as she fell down. You flew through the sand just in time to see her finish rolling down the hill. You began laughing as she wiped the sand out of her glasses.
“H-hey,” she laughed as you helped her up.
“It’s not my fault you didn’t look before you leaped!” you chuckled as she swatted at you. You both took a moment to catch your breath. When you did a bird flew past you and landed on a rock shaped like a hand that was pointed up. The rock read: your future awaits. The bird flew up and as both of you followed it with your eyes you noticed the tall spiral staircase that led up to, as he used to say, his vision cave.
“Woah,” Mirabel sighed, “that’s a lotta stairs.”
“Yeah,” you sighed, “well at least you get a ride!” You turned and crouched so she could get on your back. You grunted as she hopped on, standing upright you pushed yourself off the ground and began flying to the top. Once you got there you landed a few feet from the edge and let Mirabel hop off. Once her feet touched the ground it began to shake. As a fracture formed just beneath her feet you pulled her into you and stumbled backward. You both fell to the ground as the piece of earth separated from the cliff.
All either of you could do was stare at the other for a moment. You and Mirabel stood up and looked over the edge. After that, you both carefully approached the archway and peered into the hallway. You and Mirabel crept down the hallway, jumping when a few rats scurried past you and into the eyes and nose of an engraving of your papa. A creak came from the round door at the end of the hallway.
The bird that had been with you this whole time flew out, “Quitter!” Mirabel playfully yelled, releasing the tension that built up. You laughed and pulled the door the rest of the way open. Mirabel walked in and began to look around. You stepped in and a shiver ran down your spine, you weren’t scared of this place when you were a kid and you came up here, but now something feels off. “It’s empty..” Mirabel said just as a strong wind blew the door shut. You reached for her as the darkness enveloped you two. You held on to her wrist as a soft green glow began to light the room up. You looked down at the green constellation in the sand.
Mirabel began digging into it. You did so too, curious of what was hiding beneath the surface. When you pulled a piece that looked like cloudy glass out you gasped and looked at Mirabel who was holding a similar piece in her hands, “this must be the vision,” you murmured.
“Let’s see what’s hurting the magic then,” she mumbled, turning the piece in her hands. She began digging up more pieces, and you did too. As she assembled the pieces in her hands you heard the walls tremble and crack, “me?” she whimpered.
Sand quickly began filling the room as pieces of the ceiling came crashing near you, “Mirabel!” you yelled, grabbing her and running towards the door.
“Wait-” she twisted her hand out of your grip and ran to the sand, trying to grab all of the remaining pieces.
“Ugh!” you yelled running to the door, if she was dead bent on getting that piece there was nothing you could do to stop her. A tall pile of sand began to form in front of the door blocking it. You climbed the small pile and reached it, trying to jiggle the handle as sand was pouring down on you. You felt your heart race as you began slamming your side into the door, harder with each passing second. Just as Mirabel reached you the door swung open, causing both of you to roll down the hallway.
Once you came to a stop you panted laying on your back, the sun shining directly into your eyes. You went to set your hand down so you could sit up but you were met with air. You began scrambling for solid ground as you suddenly realized you were on the edge. Mirabel wrapped you in her arms once you go to her.
