no, i don’t think george wants us to dislike him at all! rather, i think waymar is our introduction to the themes george is most fond of - the arrogance of the noble class, the concept of a true knight, and the randomness of death.

our introduction to waymar royce is kind of quintessential spoiled little lordling. his clothes is too fancy, he’s dismissive of the smallfolk who clearly know better than him, he’s got that shiny knighthood but he’s not all that impressive, he doesn’t even have the right type of horse for ranging! he mocks both gareth and will, despite them being more experienced than him, and despite gareth being an “elder” of a sort. for waymar, the idea that gareth could have a better understanding of the situation is unthinkable. when gareth tells the story of frostbite in an attempt to get waymar to turn back, waymar dismissed him wholesale. he leads them, unknowingly, to their doom because he is simply too arrogant to see the sense in what gareth is saying. not only is that entire dismissive attitude prevalent in the story, but someone marching themselves and several innocents straight to their doom over their pride is a HUGE issue throughout the series as well. just as varys says - it is always the innocent, the peasantry, who suffer the most and here, poor gareth and will are forced to pay a price for the foolishness of someone they KNOW is less experienced.

and then the others come.

There was a faint blue shimmer to the thing, a ghost-light that played around its edges, and somehow Will knew it was sharper than any razor.

Ser Waymar met him bravely. "Dance with me then." He lifted his sword high over his head, defiant. His hands trembled from the weight of it, or perhaps from the cold. Yet in that moment, Will thought, he was a boy no longer, but a man of the Night's Watch.

The Other halted. Will saw its eyes; blue, deeper and bluer than any human eyes, a blue that burned like ice. They fixed on the longsword trembling on high, watched the moonlight running cold along the metal. For a heartbeat he dared to hope.

He won’t win this fight. He knows it, the Others know it, and Will knows it. But the fact that Waymar has doomed himself and his men to death doesn’t matter here; what matters is that he doesn’t give up! When faced with a monster from a story book, an impossible nightmare, Waymar picks up his sword and he fights, and for a moment, Will has hope.

That’s why it’s Waymar in the prologue. He’s not an exemplary sort of man, he’s not particularly smart or skilled or kind or even overly cruel or stupid. He is a very normal, common type of man who led a very normal life until this moment. But he still tries.

And so does poor Will! And so does Gared! Will is terrified as he hides in the trees, watching Waymar fight and die, knowing that going to help will just get them both killed. He’s not particularly brave, but I would say he’s smart! Genre savvy even, when he knows the fight is hopeless and makes the decision to keep hidden and fight another day. Gared flees (and it’s interesting that we have the theee main fear responses here - fight, hide, and flee) but he’s so traumatized by what he’s seen that as he’s questioned he can’t give a good, clear answer. And then he’s uselessly, needlessly killed by our shining example of chivalry and honor in Ned Stark, his head kicked like a toy by Theon Greyjoy. As Jon says, he only dies “well” because he’s shell shocked - he is confused and deeply afraid in his last moments.

the three of them - gared, will, and waymar - are the entire series diluted down to one chapter, to three unextraordinary men. but with them lies a lot of the point of the whole story. and waymar specifically, for me, is about all those moments of bravery in the face of unbeatable odds. he’s a very normal, very flawed person who reaches down deep in himself and finds something good and brave at the very end.

Did you know I’m writing this series of posts for a college class?

Anyway. “So what am I allowed to stick in my holes?” you may ask. As aforementioned, silicone is the only nonporous, body-safe material for sex toys that can be soft, but there are plenty of harder materials out there that are safe and much cheaper. Stainless steel (not a good example of cheaper), aluminum, glass (just be careful with anything that might be painted), glazed ceramic, wood (there’s a way to properly seal it to make it nonporous, don’t put a rocking horse up your butt), and certain types of treated stone (NOT anything sold by Gwyneth Paltrow) are fantastic materials for sex toys. 

To sterilize your toys, you can easily wipe them down with rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution and rinse them off before their next use. If your toys don’t have motors, you can also boil them, run them through the dishwasher, or even bake them if they won’t fit in those options (and if you’ve reached such an advanced size of sex toy, then I trust you to research what materials are safe in the oven on your own). If you think that list sounds suspiciously similar to what you can do to sterilize baby toys, then you’re right! Also, I’ve had a talk with a brand representative from FemmeFunn who assured me that their waterproof vibrators (specifically using the Ultra Bullet, Booster Bullet, and Bougie Bullet as examples) can be boiled to sterilize them. I’d be terrified about voiding the warranty with that, but you can try that if you’re brave enough.

If you think that all that crap sounds like a lot of work (it’s okay, I’m lazy too), then you’ll be happy to know that plenty of toy stores sell cleaners in spray bottles that can also sterilize your toys (just be sure to rinse them off before using them again). Provided you’ve got the budget for it, UV-C sterilizing options are becoming more popular for toys (I own one and throw my phone in there when I think about it for good measure). And honestly, excluding anal toys, warm water and unscented soap are going to be just fine for your regular cleaning. It’s just nice to disinfect things that are going in or near your holes every now and again.

A few blatant red flags are if the toy looks sweaty/oily in the product photos (it will almost certainly be PVC if you see that), if it smells like a new shower curtain (again, PVC), if the toy looks especially shiny or powdery, if some ambiguous “body-safe material” is proudly proclaimed on the packaging, and if it feels rubbery. No official organization in the U.S. is keeping adult toy manufacturers accountable for what information they’re putting on boxes, but as far as I’ve noticed, if you’re not shopping on Amazon/AliExpress/eBay/some shady wholesale site then brands don’t tend to lie about toys being silicone anymore. Even the really gross ones like NassToys.

Wouldn't the size difference alone be reason for concern over structural issues with the puppies, even if both parents are otherwise sound? I don't know how horse x pony goes but with dogs this really is a non-issue unless dwarfism is involved. Even in that case, the toy breed with dwarfism is just as prone to structural issues as a large mix with it, we just normalize it for them.

Xavier has been bred to a 35 lb mini Aussie, puppies are put together just fine

Many, many people breed papillon and small terriers with medium sized sport dogs for agility and flyball. It's done often. I'm in a few groups where people post theirs, and to be honest, many of the dogs I see are built more soundly than certain pure breeds as a whole. I'm much less concerned about physical issues due to structure in a mix between two well-built, moderate dogs of different sizes, than I am in... I won't name breeds, but 🙃 plenty

Another mix I've seen a lot of (one that generally is not done well or selected for structure) is pomskies. The majority are a structural improvement on the pomeranian, in my opinion.

When you mix two very different breeds, you don't get some body parts wholesale of one breed and some of the other. Everything tends to blend and become more moderate, with a dash here and there of parent breed traits.

Heck, Kai's dad is 20 lb and his mom is 60 lb. I'll be using smaller dams than his to try and avoid more giant monster dogs (lmao!), none over 40 lb, which Kestrel is.
