Rating Good Omens Characters by whether I would employ them in my IRL cafe or not.
Aziraphale: 100% would employ. He'd be on service, taking orders and running them out. Also, we have a small retail book corner, which I am currently failing at making work, so Aziraphale can also get that going (he'd be great at sourcing books, not so great at selling them). He is not allowed to perform his magic act though, which makes him sad. Sorry Azi.
Crowley: Absolutely yes. That (infernal being) knows their coffee. The ywould be a shit-hot barista. Sadly, they get fired after a week because the only person in my life that is snarkier and grumpier than Crowley is my husband (the actual owner of the cafe, I'm just along for the ride). They get into too many arguments and Crowley quits majestically. But we really appreciated the handful of times they yeeted someone off into another dimension when they were difficult customers.
Nina: Obviously. She has the experience for the job (unlike probably all the other characters); and she has the personality for it. She'd be the one that gets all the good gossip from the customers and be able to handle it be stupid busy. She'd be our number one reliable employee. My husband and Nina would also fight and snark but they'd both feel refreshed by it.
Gabriel: NAH.
Jim: Also NAH, but we'd probably put him on for a week of work placement through a job placement agency to help him out a bit, because he clearly needs it. Unfortunately, he becomes a liability because he drinks too many hot chocolates on shift and that costs us too much in stock.
Beezlebub: I'd really like to, but the council food inspector won't allow it with all the flies that come with zir.
Famine: I think Famine would be a food rep. These people come around from food wholesalers to introduce us to new products. A lot of these seem pretty questionable. I reckon Famine's taken Ciao on the road after the Notpocalypse for something new to do. He's a very polite and enthusiastic rep, but we politely decline his products. The following week, a critical potato shortage hits the market and we have trouble sourcing good quality chips, a key menu item in the cafe.
Furfur: I wouldn't give him a job even though he appears to have a solid set of organisational skills, because he personally irritates me. But then he becomes a regular customer, coming in for a large cap everyday, pays in the low-denomination coins, takes up an entire table of six for two hours, and then asks for a bag of coffee to be ground in the middle of the lunch rush.
Maggie: she'd be in charge of the playlist. (at least, after Crowley quits in a fury, up until then he'd hogged the spotify and dictated all of the music- and miracles it to continue even when he's not on shift. There's slightly less Queen than there is on our playlist currently). She'd be a day barista one or two days a week. I reckon Maggie and Aziraphale would be the Monday server/barista duo.
Every now and then, the playlist gets possessed for a few hours and none of us can do anything about it but let it pass and see what Crowley's digging musically these days.
The Metatron: Absolutely not. In fact, he's banned from coming within 500 metres of us and our oat milk supply.

My friend Mohammed in Belgium suggested creating this link to help mitigate some of my financial losses. I am deeply grateful for any support, no matter how small. I’ll share images showing the destruction of my business and home, which has forced my family and me into a cramped tent. We face severe challenges, including extreme temperatures, inadequate winter preparation, and a lack of essential supplies like medicine, food, and clean water. Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has a line about the state of small-scale agriculture in America these days.
It’s drawn from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which shows that as the average size of farms has risen, the nation had lost 544,000 of them since 1981.
“That’s every farm today that exists in North Dakota and South Dakota, added to those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, added to those in Nebraska and Colorado, added to those in Oklahoma and Missouri,” Mr. Vilsack told a conference in Washington this spring. “Are we as a country OK with it?”
Even though the United States continues to produce more food on fewer acres, Mr. Vilsack worries that the loss of small farmers has weakened rural economies, and he wants to stop the bleeding. Unlike his last turn in the same job, under former President Barack Obama, this time his department is able to spend billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives passed under three major laws since 2021 — including the biggest investment in conservation programs in U.S. history.
The plan in a nutshell: Multiply and improve revenue streams to bolster farm balance sheets. Rather than just selling crops and livestock, farms of the future could also sell carbon credits, waste products and renewable energy.
“Instead of the farm getting one check, they potentially could get four checks,” Mr. Vilsack said in an interview. He is also helping schools, hospitals and other institutions to buy food grown locally, and investors to build meatpacking plants and other processing facilities to free farmers from powerful middlemen.
But it’s far from clear whether new policies and a cash infusion will be enough to counteract the forces that have pushed farmers off the land for decades — especially since much of the money is aimed at reducing carbon emissions, and so will also go toward large farming operations because they are the biggest polluters.
The number of farms has been declining since the 1930s, in large part because of migration from rural areas to cities and greater mechanization of agriculture, which allowed operators to cultivate larger tracts with fewer people. Over time, the federal government abandoned a policy of managing production to support prices, prompting growers to become more export-oriented while local distribution networks atrophied.
The last half-decade has been more disruptive than most. First came a trade war against China under former President Donald J. Trump, which drew retaliatory tariffs that cut into U.S. exports of farm products like soybeans and pork. Then came the pandemic, which scrambled supply chains and sapped farm labor, leaving crops to rot in the fields.
After Congress cushioned the blow with relief for farmers hurt by pandemic disruptions, things started to turn around. Even as the cost of supplies like fertilizer and seed rose, so did food prices, and farm incomes increased. In 2023, default rates on farm loans neared record lows.
“Farm balance sheets are the healthiest they’ve ever been in the aggregate,” said Brad Nordholm, the chief executive of Farmer Mac, a large secondary market for agricultural credit. “The tools available to American farmers to have a more predictable return, even when commodity prices change and input prices change, is greater than it’s ever been before.”
But wholesale crop prices are expected to decline over the coming year. Rising interest rates have made it more difficult to finance planting and harvesting, borrow for an expansion or just get into agriculture — especially since land values jumped 29 percent from 2020 to 2023.
That’s especially true for the smallest farmers, who are far less likely to be tapped into Department of Agriculture assistance programs and are more vulnerable to adverse weather, labor shortages and consumer whims.
“I think in some ways they’re in a worse position than before the pandemic,” said Benneth Phelps, executive director of the nonprofit Carrot Project, which advises small farmers in New England. “We see a lot of farmers making hard decisions right now about whether to stay in or get out, because they’ve run out of steam.”
That’s where the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law come in.
The laws have collectively provided about $60 billion to the Agriculture Department, which has parceled it out across a variety of priorities, from relieving farmers’ debt to paying them to reduce their carbon emissions.
The biggest chunk — about $19.5 billion — has breathed new life into subsidies to encourage conservation practices that improve the land, like cutting back on plowing and planting cover crops to sequester carbon in the soil. Some of the programs had shrunk in successive Farm Bills, which are five-year legislative packages that covers most agricultural subsidies, and about two-thirds of farmers who applied each year got nothing.
The new funding has added 16,000 recipients over the past two years. Preliminary data shows the expansion is allowing smaller farms to take part.

By James Meadway who hosts the weekly economics podcast Macrodose and is director of the Progressive Economy Forum. Previously, he was economic adviser to the shadow chancellor, and chief economist at the New Economics Foundation. Originally published at OpenDemocracy.
The working assumption, for governments and central banks across the world, is that at some point soon everything will get back to ‘normal’ – our economies will return to either pre-pandemic or, sometimes, even pre-2008 crash levels.
These beliefs are reinforced by media economics commentary and across political parties.
But what if they’re wrong? The world’s largest asset manager, overseeing $10trn in assets across the globe, thinks we are, instead, entering a period of increased risk and uncertainty, defined by unavoidable recession and much higher inflation.
BlackRock – a well-connected, influential and hugely profitable pillar of global capitalism – made the predictions in its ‘2023 Global Investment Outlook’ report.
It states: “The Great Moderation, the four-decade period of largely stable activity and inflation, is behind us.”
Instead, BlackRock forecasts a new regime with a “brutal trade-off” – falling living standards for the many becoming profits for the few.
This reality, of a world undergoing fundamental transformations and disrupting our settled modes of existence, has so far barely entered the economic mainstream.
For BlackRock to break with this consensus might, potentially, be one of the first signs of a broader shift in how major institutions in the Western economies view the world.
Systemic chaos
Annual food inflation in the UK rose to 13.3% – an all-time high – last month, according to trade body the British Retail Consortium, ahead of the official government figures out later this month.
This situation – though slightly worse in the UK due to a flawed Brexit deal and the falling value of the pound (critical as a major food importer) – is common across the globe. Even as wholesale energy prices have dropped from their summer 2022 peak, the price of food everywhere is soaring. United Nations’ forecasts show a major risk of widespread famine in the Global South over the next year, with harvests continuing to underperform.
This global spike in prices over the past 18 months was initially described by the economic establishment as “transitory”. Then, as inflation continued remorselessly upwards, familiar explanations reappeared: notably, excessive worker power (but real wages in the Global North are still falling) and excessive printing of money through quantitative easing (but we’ve been running QE since 2009).
The economic profession as a whole, and institutions such as the major central banks, have typically written down the obvious evidence of global instability as temporary factors, rather than something more systemic.
This means we’re trapped with central banks that still think pushing up interest rates to induce a recession is a smart way to bring down inflation. We have governments committed to holding down wages and salaries while allowing profits to explode.
But BlackRock believes the world is now “shaped by supply that involves brutal trade-offs” – in other words, the world economy is less effective at supplying goods and services than it was.
The after-effects of the pandemic have caused supply chain problems, as we all know, but they also think an ageing population means fewer workers, pushing up the cost of labour; that “geopolitical tensions” will disrupt global supply chains; and that the shift to net-zero carbon emissions will involve “demand and supply mismatches”.
Put all this together, and BlackRock thinks inflation will come down to the 2% level we’ve been used to only if central banks are prepared to ‘crush’ their economies into a severe recession. Since that’s unlikely, inflation will stay much higher than we are used to – combined with a miserable recession over the next year or so.
Massive profits for the lucky few
But BlackRock’s predictions don’t cover everything.
Its report misses the longer-term effects of Covid – both in terms of the impact on healthcare and, as we’re currently seeing, continuing waves of infection. It also misses, critically, the wider ecological impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion.
It is possible to imagine a world where peace returns rapidly to Ukraine, and the subsequent disruptions to global food and fertiliser trade are reduced. It is not possible to imagine a world where climate change and ecological destruction are thrown into reverse – indeed, some of the effects felt today, notably, biodiversity loss, are irreversible.
This twofold combination has led ecologist Nicholas Beuret to describe a “climate supercycle” of food shortages and rising prices running well into the future. (A recent episode of my podcast ‘Macrodose’ examines the coming food shortages for UK farmers.)
And, finally, BlackRock misses the extreme profits that shortages over the last year have generated for a select few multinationals, such as those supplying oil and gas.
It’s the last part that’s critical. A more unstable world affects everyone, but it will affect everyone differently.
For most of us, on the wrong side of food price hikes and extreme weather, the future is not great. But for the lucky few, shortages have been turned, through price rises, into massive profits

How to Start a Grocery Delivery Business
In an instant where convenience is important and online services are influencing consumer habits, starting a grocery delivery business can be a lucrative venture. As the demand for efficient and time-saving solutions continues to rise, this guide will take you through the essential steps to launch and scale your grocery delivery service.
Research on markets
The foundation of a successful grocery delivery business starts with complete market research. Identify your target audience, analyze local competitors, and understand the unique needs of your community. Consider factors such as demographics, shopping behaviors, and existing gaps in grocery delivery services.
Construct a Business Plan
A business plan is an extensive document that describes the objectives, tactics, and day-to-day activities of a company. A well-researched business plan will serve as your roadmap, outlining your goals, strategies, and financial projections.
Create a robust business model
Choose a business model that aligns with your goals and resources. You can opt for a partnership with local grocery stores, source products independently, or adopt a hybrid approach. Evaluate the pros and cons of each model, considering factors such as costs, logistics, and customer preferences.
Build a user-friendly app or website.
Invest in a user-friendly and intuitive platform to facilitate seamless interactions between customers, your service, and partnered grocery stores. Develop a mobile app or website that allows users to browse products easily, create shopping lists, and place orders with a few taps or clicks. Ensure secure payment gateways and implement features like order tracking and notifications to enhance the overall user experience. If you’re planning to develop a web or app, know the costs of developing a grocery delivery app.
Establish strong supplier relationships.
Develop solid partnerships with local grocery stores or wholesalers to ensure a consistent and diverse product supply. Negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, and terms to build a mutually beneficial relationship. Reliable suppliers are crucial to maintaining a well-stocked inventory and meeting customer expectations.
Implement Efficient Logistics and Delivery Systems:
Efficient logistics and reliable delivery systems are the backbone of any successful grocery delivery business. Develop a streamlined process for order fulfillment, consider partnering with third-party delivery services if needed, and optimize delivery routes for time and cost efficiency. Communicate delivery times and ensure your delivery team is well-trained in customer service and hygiene practices.
Emphasize Quality Customer Service:
Excellent customer service is a key differentiator in the competitive grocery delivery landscape. Provide responsive customer support through various channels, such as live chat, email, or phone. Address customer queries, concerns, and feedback promptly to build trust and loyalty. A positive customer experience is likely to result in repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.
Implement marketing and promotion strategies:
Create awareness for your grocery delivery business through targeted marketing and promotions. Utilize social media platforms, local advertising, and partnerships with influencers to reach a wider audience. Offer promotions, discounts, and loyalty programs to encourage both new and repeat customers.
Ensure regulatory compliance.
Understand and comply with local regulations regarding food handling, safety, and business operations. Obtain any necessary licenses or permits to operate legally. Compliance with industry standards not only safeguards your business but also instills confidence in customers regarding the safety and legitimacy of your service.
Optimize Technology for Analytics:
Make use of technology to gather and analyze data on customer preferences, purchasing patterns, and market trends. Use this information to make informed decisions, refine your product offerings, and customize marketing strategies. A data-driven approach can significantly contribute to the growth and sustainability of your grocery delivery business.
Scale and innovate:
As your business gains traction, explore opportunities for expansion and innovation. Consider adding new features to your app, expanding your delivery area, or introducing subscription models. Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements to remain competitive in the ever-evolving grocery delivery landscape.
Conclusion:
Starting a grocery delivery business requires careful planning, dedication, and a customer-focused approach. Grocery delivery services are becoming more and more in demand, and you can meet this demand by developing a streamlined and efficient service, applying technology, and understanding your market. Follow these steps, adapt to changing consumer preferences, and watch your grocery delivery business thrive in an era where convenience is king.

How to Choose the Best Basmati Rice Partner in India
Choosing the right basmati rice supplier can make or break your business. With its fragrant aroma, long grains, and unique taste, basmati rice is a worldwide favorite. India, being the world’s largest producer and exporter of basmati rice, is the go-to destination for high-quality rice. But how do you choose the best partner in a sea of options? This guide breaks it down for you.
Understanding Basmati Rice: Why Quality Matters
Basmati rice isn’t just another rice variety, it’s a premium product distinguished by its:
Extra-long grains that elongate when cooked.
Fragrant scent and distinct flavor.
Aging process, which enhances its flavor and texture.
Quality basmati rice can be found at premium prices in international markets, making it important to work with a supplier that maintains the highest standards. Look for certifications such as ISO 22000, HACCP and India Organic, which ensure the rice meets global food safety and quality norms.
Factors to consider when choosing a supplier
Choosing a supplier is about more than just product quality. Here’s what to evaluate:
Certifications and standards: Make sure the supplier follows international food safety and agricultural practices. This includes compliance with standards such as APEDA certification for Indian basmati rice exporters.
Supply chain reliability: A good partner ensures consistent deliveries, even during peak demand seasons or volatile rice prices.
Transparency: Does the supplier provide clear information about its sourcing practices and production processes?
These factors ensure your supply chain runs smoothly, maintaining your business’s reputation and customer satisfaction.
Evaluate the experience and reputation of Indian rice manufacturers
Not all suppliers are the same. Research the following to find a reputable partner:
Market presence: Established manufacturers often have robust systems in place to handle large-scale exports and sudden surges in demand.
Customer reviews: Look for reviews and testimonials from other international buyers. Platforms like TradeIndia and ExportersIndia provide verified customer feedback.
Track record: Partners with a history of ethical practices and sustainable sourcing are more likely to align with your business goals.
Reputation isn’t just about longevity; it’s about reliability, innovation, and customer-focused service.
Customization and packaging options for global buyers
Global markets require diverse solutions, and a good supplier should offer:
Customized packaging: Packaging sizes, materials, and designs tailored to specific markets. For example, vacuum-sealed packaging is popular in regions where freshness is a priority.
Private labeling: Many manufacturers offer private labeling services, allowing you to sell rice under your own brand.
Bulk options: Suppliers must meet both small-scale and wholesale requirements, accommodating businesses of all sizes.
This flexibility allows you to differentiate your brand in a competitive market.
Why India is the leading destination for basmati rice exporters
India dominates the global basmati rice market, accounting for 65% of international exports. Here’s why:
Rich agricultural heritage: The northern plains of India, including Punjab and Haryana, are ideal for growing authentic basmati rice.
Competitive pricing: Indian suppliers provide high-quality rice at competitive prices, even during global price fluctuations.
Sustainability initiatives: Many exporters adopt eco-friendly practices such as water conservation and organic farming, aligning with global sustainability trends.
Choosing an Indian rice partner ensures access to the best quality at a reasonable cost backed by centuries of expertise.
Choosing the right basmati rice partner in India is a strategic decision that requires careful evaluation of quality, reputation, and customization options. India's leadership in the global rice market ensures a plethora of reliable suppliers, but due diligence is crucial to find the right match for your business. By focusing on these factors, you can secure a partnership that ensures consistent supply, premium quality, and long-term success.
