Esquire: From the very beginning of the movie, these don't look like typical comic-book clothes. What was your goal here?
Sammy Sheldon: Given that it's set in the early sixties, we used that era as a background but we kept it slightly ambiguous because we weren't looking to make a period piece. Matthew [Vaughn, the director] wanted a Bond-esque vibe to the film, particularly with the male characters. So we looked at Dr. No and Goldfinger.

#i always vaguely suspected they didn't want to make it too much of period piece ubt like#WHY SET YOUR MOVIE IN THE PAST IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO COMMIT TO IT#mad men spoiled me on this they were always unafraid to put the characters in clothes that were like#hideous to modern sensibilities#just bc they were period appropriate#the clothes in XMFC are kind of a mess but i respect the effort#sammy sheldon did some old classic hollywood stuff btw#they costume designer for the other first class movies is louise mingenbach#who's worked with brian singer a lot (with the previous xmens movies)#so i think the costumes are even less thoughtful lol
