Wish is just a normal Disney film just like all the rest.
Wish is actually a damn good movie, there I said it!
I'm going to start by saying this much, it's very odd to me that so many people are now screaming for a love story from Disney, when not even five or ten years ago there was shouting from the roof tops about Disney doing TOO MUCH romance. For the longest time it was "I wish Disney wouldn't do pairings" "Ugh another romance, can't the princess not." Etc. Now everyone wants one, even though Romance isn't really as big a Disney trope as people think.
Actually let's go through the animated catalogue and see how frequently the love story is centered as the main conflict and asperation to the character. In this case it's the key thing, not a 'Oh they happen to like each other in the end' situation, it's THE thing, the point of the movie is their romance. Then let's see how many have it as the secondary aspect, and let's see how many have it as not important at all. (And we're talking romantic love, not family love)
Romance (Total number: 15)
Snow White, Lady and the Tramp, The Aristocats, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Secondary Characters hook up so this is a weird one), Doug's First Movie, Tarzan, Lizzie McGuire the Movie, Enchanted, The Princess and the Frog (Only from Naveen's POV), Tangled (could be seen as secondary too)
Secondary (Total Number: 25)
Fantasia, Bambi, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free , Melody Time, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Cinderella Sleeping Beauty
One Hundred and One Dalmatians , Robin Hood, The Rescuers , The Fox and the Hound , Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Rescuers Down under
The Nightmare before Christmas, The Lion King ,Hercules ,Mulan ,Fantasia 2000 , Dinosaur, Atlantis the Lost Empire , Meet the Robinsons , Frankenweenie ,Frozen, , Strange World
Not in it at all (Total Number: 42 -including Wish)
Pinocchio, The Reluctant Dragon, Dumbo, Saludos Amigos, Victory through Air power, Three Caballeros, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan
Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective
Oliver and Company, Ducktales the Treasure of the lost lamp, A Goofy Movie, James and the Giant Peach, The Tigger Movie
The Emperor's new Groove, Recess School's out, Return to Neverland, Lilo and Stich, Treasure Planet, The Jungle Book 2
Piglet's big Movie, Brother Bear, Teacher's Pet, Home on the Range, Pooh's Heffalump Movie, Chicken Little, The Wild
Bolt, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck it Ralph, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Wreck it Ralph 2, Frozen 2, Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Wish
These are just the animated not live action, and not live action with animation movies. All in all it's more common to see a Disney film with NO romance in it at all then a romantic one.
So why is it that people keep saying, but we're missing the romance, it's because of the fact that most of the time the Parks and other media pair the characters together. Take Peter pan, in the movie, the boy is utterly oblivious to Wendy's affections, to the point of pissing her off enough that she leaves the party that the tribe is hosting. In the parks, and other media (the plays, other movies) the romance is in your face, because people want them to be a couple, but in the movie itself you never see it.
Star, based on the making of book, was supposed to be a younger version of Asha's grandfather, which fits the theming of the movie. However, from what I understand, one of the reasons why they went against is was because it was hitting to close to Genie in the shape shifting. On top of that, the character of Star, seems heavily inspired by the art work of William Joyce, who created Night Light.
Tumblr media
This is him and Katherine (Future Mother Goose) who is basically Star in a lot of ways. He lights the night to keep the nightmares away. These two eventually grow up (He remembers He's jack frost) and they end up as a couple.
It would be apping off of that story, and sadly people didn't give the William Joyce movie Meet the Robinsons a chance (don't sleep on that folks please! It is a good story.)
Also straight up give more love to the Guardian's of Childhood, you'll be happy while you read it.
Tumblr media
I'm not saying don't ship it, what I am saying is that please don't go saying this was planned when it really wasn't. That was supposed to be her grandfather there.
And I'm not against the art work, I find it very cute and sweet and lover the designs. But I do think that the whole, "WE WERE ROBBED!" thing isn't being at all fair to the creative team behind this story, as again, *points up* they were following the tradition of a story that doesn't have a love interest, which is the vast majority of the stories that they tell.
Wish perfectly falls in line also with Disney's normal length of animated movies.
Wish was 1 hours and 35 minutes
The movie that came out before it clocked in at
Strange World = 1 hours and 42 minutes
Moana = 1 hours and 47 minutes
Frozen = 1 hours and 42 minutes
This Hour long movie thing started really with Atlantis the Lost Empire = 1 hours and 36 minutes
While Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch all clock in around =1 hour and 30 at most, some are even less than that. Wish's run time is equal to that of Atlantis, or Aladdin, or Treasure planet. So I'm a bit perplexed on the "It's too short" thing. Maybe growing up just before and during the days of Little Mermaid and Aladdin made me like the shorter tales.
Which is another point. With a shorter movie, you never get complete backstory. It's a fairy tale! I mean, look at Little Mermaid. Seriously can you Name any of her sisters from the opening song.
Tumblr media
Like seriously, I don't really know a lot of people who can tell me anything about Aquatica, for example. Unless you actually read the books or watched the TV show. And before then we had nothing. Nothing on her mom, nothing on her sisters.
Then there's the town Belle comes from, what do we know about it? Not much, not even who governs the damn thing. Howe about Aladdin before the TV series and King of thieves cleared up everything. We didn't know who his parents were, nor Jasmine's mom. Hell we still don't know anything about Cinderella's father from the animated movie.
Point being, a lot of information, much like Wish, got cut for time. In Snow white we were supposed to be given a longer back story for her father and mother, that was cut due to it being to long, it's in the golden book though. Prince Florian (Yes that is his name) was supposed to have Prince Phillips escape, but it was deemed to hard to animate at the time.
Also there was one that was dancing on the clouds, with STARS, around them that looks very much like you know, our Star.
So basically, he's a nod to what could have been for Snow White all those years ago. Cut for time.
Tumblr media
Aladdin had a whole cut song because they chopped his mother out as she was supposed to play a part in the movie and help her son with the Genie.
Tumblr media
Zena is her name and she was cut to streamline the film.
Maid Marian in the original Robin Hood was supposed to protect him after his plunge into the water, and protect him from King John while he's threatening her. King Richard appears in the end and scares him into stopping but she's willing to take a dagger to the chest to protect Robin.
Tumblr media
This is when Richard meets Robin with Marian telling him all about what happened.
All Disney movies change. Isabel in Encanto was supposed to have a nerdy boyfriend that the family disapproved of.
Hell, Frozen was at one point going to be the Bad guy wins the guy, the hero (Gerta) that we followed all the way to the end rooting for her, was supposed to be a gold digger, and Kai was supposed to say "Nah, I'm gonna stick with the Snow Queen" because she's sad and your a bitch. (Thanks Eisner, I hate it!)
So yeah, there's probably A whole lot of cut content that was supposed to go in, but to streamline it to 95 minutes, you have to cut! At least it's not what happened to the Black Cauldron. No I will never forgive Katzenburg for that travesty!
Disney always used Popular Music over Broadway
Honestly this is the one complaint that I hear that kills me the most about this movie, that the studio went with a pop music team. As if this is not a common thing for Disney movies!
Fun fact, the team behind most of the musical scores up until the 1960s were all composers and musicians that wrote songs for the radio. Or song writers that did radio music. If I listed every single one we'd be here for ages.
The Sherman brothers actually wrote pop tunes for the Teen sweetheart Annette Funicello and several other well known singers and actors of movies.
The first major Broadway group was Ashman and Menken, Followed by Miranda, and the Lopez's. Most, if not all of the biggest Disney songs were written by pop songwriters, whos goal it was to get that song played on the radio.
Hell The Lion King, Tarzan, The Emperors New Groove, and Treasure planet to name a few were all done by Pop musicians. I didn't hear complaining about it back then! What's the difference now? Because the team is not Elton freaking John, or Sting?
All of Oliver and Company was pop songs. Several movies didn't have songs, or only had one.
If we're going to celebrate a studio that helped bring an artform out of it's infancy and show that you could do a full movie of animated pictures where you get emotions out of it, we need to celebrate all aspects, and that includes things we may not realize are kind of unique.
When Hercules and Hunchback came out, people complained about them not being "Traditional" Disney. It was Gospel, it was too dark, or in the case of Tarzan, why are we following a boy, or Treasure planet, "Yuck a space story". Now people adore these movies. People who grew up with them want to celebrate them, and sometimes they don't realize that they were once derided as hard or harder than Wish is being right now.
I just wish that people would give these movies a chance rather than not let the creatives tell their story. We had a whole damn section of 2D animation in Strange World! No one talked about it! No one went "More of this please". Give me these stories, let me enjoy a original fairy tale, because if we keep rehashing things, there's going to be little to celebrate when the next 10 or 20 years rolls around.
Sorry for the kinda rant. This has just been on my nerves for a while.

One thing I like to think about is how Twisted Wonderland could incorporate elements from Disney’s 2d movies into their lore.
For example:
During a potions class, when Professor Crewel leaves the room, Ace starts mucking about and accidently adds a plant that’s basically used in Twisted Wonderland’s alcohol. This causes pink bubbles to form from the cauldron and transform into the pink elephants on parade that begin to create chaos and now the entire class have to figure out how to get rid of them.
Ace, Deuce and Yuu are with their fellow classmates on a camping trip and they’re all telling ghost stories around a campfire and two or three of their classmates bring up heffalumps and woozles much to Yuu and Grim’s confusion. Ace scoffs, saying that they’re not real and just a scary story people tell to scare kids (kind of like the boogeyman of Twisted Wonderland). When Fem!Yuu asks what those are her classmates answer her (maybe they start singing/chanting a slower version of the original song) by explaining that they ‘guzzle up the thing you prize’, making them up to be these monsters the same way Pooh, Tigger and Rabbit were teaching Roo in Pooh’s Heffalump Movie. Ace looks unimpressed but Deuce, Fem!Yuu and Grim (especially since the last two don’t know anything about this world) look scared. At some point in the night, food starts to go missing and then the class end up split up in the woods and everyone sees shadows of these heffalumps and woozles the same way Snow White saw monsters after she ran from the huntsman. When they can’t find Yuu Ace, Deuce and Grim believe that she’s been eaten by those creatures and they create a plan of attack to get revenge on those monsters for eating Grim’s tuna *Ace and Deuce turn to look at Grim* he means eating his henchman. Long story short, heffalumps and woozles don’t exist, their food was eaten by woodland creatures and everything was in their minds and now Crewel has to babysit a bunch of scared teenagers *sigh* great.
I also realise that the Headless Horseman song would be a cool campfire song for teenagers to sing to spook each other.
Since RSA is a hero school, I thought it would be cool if they have a pixie dust reserve as a gift from the fairies and Yuu gets told how to use it when she’s on a quest to save her friends (you bet her ‘wonderful thought’ would be with Grim and Adeuce) and her and the RSA boys do the whole she (we) can fly number. Also, imagine if at one point the gang end up trying to sail the Jolly Rodger.
The song Cruella De Vil, has been changed to Divus Crewel/Professor Crewel by the NRC students and the older years sing it to the first years as a sort of warning to how strict and ruthless their potions teacher is (and as a way to have a laugh because they find scaring children fun)
There’s a secret storage cupboard in Heartslabyul that houses the eat me cookies and drink me bottles. Only the Dorm Leaders and Vice Dorm Leaders know of this.
If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them

Bracket B thoughts:
"Yodel-Aadle-Eedle-Idle-Oo" is better than I expected from the movie's reputation, but I really only have so much tolerance for yodeling. Also the lines "You'll suffer till the end of time / Enduring tortures, most of which rhyme" from "Robot Hell" are hilarious.
...It's fucking "In the Hall of the Mountain King." I don't need to explain that one.
"Kidnap the Sandy Claws" isn't as bad as I remembered it being, but the verses that don't rhyme really irk me for some reason, and Lock+Shock+Barrel's singing is just...not great. So I'll give this one to "Big Shot."
"Wait for It," I will begrudgingly admit, is a good song. It's not the best villain song in that matchup, though. It's not even Burr's best villain song (that would be "The Room Where It Happens"). "Want You Gone" still very clearly has GLaDOS' trademark condescension, snark, and vitriol towards Chell, but it's also mixed with her complicated need for her to be around that adds a lot of emotional nuance to her insulting goodbye. Does she really want Chell gone because she's a pain in the ass, or because she knows keeping her in Aperture will hurt her? Does she want Chell to stay to keep testing her, or because she's her only friend? Honestly, probably some of both columns. GLaDOS has very good villain songs.
"Magic Dance" just feels like an excuse to have David Bowie do David Bowie things while singing a David Bowie song alongside minions whose singing...really sucks. "Meant to Be Yours" is a really intense encapsulation of JD's character, swinging from slow, emotional expressions of love to fast-paced, aggressive vows of violence.
"Great at Crime" is just a fucking bop, IDK. It's very catchy and goofy (in an intentional way).
Both "The Mob Song" and "Biggering" are very good, honestly. Personal preference for me.
Have you heard that guitar in "E.G.G.M.A.N"?! That shit SLAPS. It makes the phrase "I am the Eggman" sound cool.
"Look Away" is...really just not a Villain Song. Doesn't focus on Olaf enough. "There Ain't Nothin But Bad Days Ahead" is not exactly what I'd call good, but it's more fitting for this tournament.
...fuck IDK, I voted for "Who Will Know" because it seemed underappreciated, but I get why "Nothing Left to Lose" is winning. That one is really good. Maybe I should have gone for that instead.
All of the IEYTD theme songs kick ass and "Cog in the Machine" is no exception. Those vocals are powerful and emotional and very good.
"Love Doesn't Stand A Chance" confuses me because it has Regina calling Snow White a "bitch," but also can't show her doing any villainy more intense than childish mayhem like ripping a grandma's knitting and pushing a dwarf over. The tone is very confused. Also, Jeremy Jordan sings the English version of "Hurricane" and I'm a sucker for him belting about justice.
"Les Poissons" is...fine. But "Hero" and the scene it accompanies are some of the few things I actually like about RWBY, which says a lot about how good that song is.
"Heffalumps and Woozles" is not about actual villains but mere products of Pooh's imagination, so I am disqualifying it in my books on the same grounds as "Look Away." Also, "The Hounds" is pretty damn good.
I really appreciate the sheer drama of Raphael singing his own damn boss theme, and I honestly could not give a shit about that rich white girl.
I always like a good Weird Al, and "Let The Pun Fit the Crime" is very good, but "The Pitiful Children" had already seared itself in my brain as one of my favorite villain songs.
I’m right there with in Great at Crime. Epithet Erased songs are just so good lyrically.

You've got to hand it to Elephants - for an animal THAT large, they've managed to invoke a range of emotions in us pretty well. Whether you were moved to tears by Dumbo, terrified of the Heffalumps in Winnie the Pooh or laughing at Stampy, Bart's Elephant from the Simpsons - us humans have a special kinship with these large creatures and it's about time we explored that...
Here to determine if Elephants are assholes [or] not is funny man James Roday Rodriguez, who believes that Elephants may just be our spirit guides. Hear Alice and James dive into topics such as Verne Troyer, Hindu Mythology AND where the phrase "White Elephant" came from on this very special episode of Asshole Animals.
Please note: Alice DOES claim in this episode that she doesn't know of any examples of Elephants being malicious to other species on purpose - which directly contradicts her previous episode on Vultures with Tom Morath. Simple explanation: she had no idea Elephants messed with Lappet-faced Vulture nests at the time of this recording.
Our charity of the week is the fabulous Trunks Up - who are working hard to free Elephants from being put to work in Asia and to give them a peaceful existence out in large sanctuaries. Find out more about their incredible work and how you can donate to help feed these Elephants at www.trunksup.org.

Takeaway: Wow, I really took out my frustration with later KH titles. Aside from XIII Days (which adds 100 Acre Wood and the dummied out Pinocchio world), 0.1 (which adds the dummied out Jungle Book world and the FM-exclusive Monstro fight), KH3D (only 11), and PHP (same amount as the first KH), all the post-KH Trinity titles get an increase in Disney IP that gets pulled into them. Most tellingly is how my KH4 would contain the most Disney in it (if we're not counting all the UX Medal-esque cameos in TML), as opposed to the real KH4 in the works being Part 1 of Nomura's mad, desperate Final Fantasy Versus XIII do-over. Man, do I ever wish we'd gotten KH like this!

A Song With Ten Names
Chapter 19: Yes, to Err is Human, So Don't Be One (3)
Chapter 1 ☆ Next chapter ☆ AO3 ☆ Featured song playlist
Summary of chapter: The thicker the water, the more weeds for sirens to hide in. Secrets, secrets, secrets. Their flavor is so delicious to the split plant man.
Author's Note: The sung song in this chapter is Come Along by Cosmo Sheldrake. As before, the title and the chapter breaks are lyrics from Yes, to Err is Human, So Don't Be One by Will Wood.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
I could take your life, if you're done with it, sweetheart
You still picking at that? Only ate the good parts
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The woman...is a horrible liar.
In her mind, hiding behind the props around her musical stage are the clarinets, the oboes and the drums. They rise from the cattails, the tall grass and brambly bushes— instruments that either don’t exist here or are simply not available to her. All the same, the symphony is in the stranger’s mind, and that’s enough. This murky atmosphere and the song of lost souls go hand in hand like lovers trying to run away, eloped and gone forever. She remembers, that first day with Hidan, that man in love with another who planned to escape to the land of the stars, who unwittingly snuck her a backstory for this character she’s become.
The promise to live has made the woman forget her promise to not come here without Kakuzu.
The edge of the lake is muckier and rockier the farther she circles to the south end, the farthest from her home she’s abandoned tonight, coming here so foolishly by her lonesome. The moisture of the mud sinks between bare toes, tells her that marshland may near by.
How perfect.
She follows the cattails’ path, walks underneath twisty gnarls of old trees, their branches stretched overhead like gates as she imagines herself stepping into a magical realm. Is she already in one? Doesn’t matter too much. There’s different kinds of magic, and the kind that contains death isn’t really one she wants to dwell on more than necessary.
The intro to this composition is long, and she sings onomatopoeia breathy and dramatic as the instrumental needs, swings her hands and arms and steps in a waltz. Shadows grow taller as she wanders deeper into gloomy perdition; it should terrify her, but danger is familiar. The parasites that accompany such untamed ecosystems don’t intimidate her, even as she leaves her shoes by the clearer water.
The spirit of the trees watches her spin around in her white nightgown, the shape of her visible beneath as moonlight shines through the thin cloth. A few final “bum bum bum”s, and finally she gets to sing. It’s as close as one can get to inviting the ghosts in without your ouija board.
Come along, catch a Heffalump
Sit with me on a muddy clump
We'll sing a song of days gone by
Fireflies are re-imagined as sprites, little chimes as their voices that reply much as bells do in the original song. Dum, dee, dum, dee. Hands stretch to each one like a band's conductor; then fingers pinch their fingers and twist by her wrists, like they're plucking and shaking the fairydust out of the bugs' wings.
Run along now, don’t be glum
Get you gone, now, have some fun
Don't be long, for the end is nigh
Dancing is not something she has done, not in front of the others, but here surrounded by the dank of stagnant water and the thick oxygen of the rooted plants, there is no other choice. She is alone. She gets to be the archetype she’s always wanted to be: the fairy in the forest, the witch of the woods, the siren of the swamp. Change is stirring in the air and it needs a bit of stewing, a bit of time in a watchful magician’s cauldron lest the concoction of time and fate begin to form a scum on the top, like milk does when left alone in a mug for too long. Itachi and Tobi and Kakuzu and Hidan and Kisame, in separate degrees and directions, know her biggest secret and shame. She can finally let go, at least in some sense. She has no calendar on paper but as generations before did, the traveler can still see days pass. The grass is yellowing at the tips and her roses are beginning to wilt. Summer is ending, autumn nearly begun. Her favorite seasons are the ones of change, where the scent in the wind carries another aroma than just heat or cold, where either the perfume of blooms or the rot of dead leaves leave a taste in the back of her mouth just from being outside for a minute or two.
Don't let moments pass along
And waste before your eyes
Winter is her hardest time of the year, and she is afraid, but autumn will make it worth it. The fall will help her prepare for a tumble through the blizzards to come. The ribbon is untied from her hair, held in her hand and swirled around like a flag as locks bounce mussed and free.
March with me and the borogoves
Come with me and the slithy toves
And never ask us why
Autumn is the time of mysteries, whimsies, and magics. That’s why a silly girl is out by her lonesome, asking the life around her to come along, come play where prying eyes can’t see.
She may be a performer, but she is still a horrible liar. The spirit of the trees witnesses her in her folly, raw and vulnerable and so very eager to get lost. He watches her hop and clap and skip in the way one only can when they believe they are truly all alone.
Come, come, come, come, come along now
Run away from the hum-drum
We'll go to a place that is safe from
Greed, anger and boredom
We'll dance and sing till sundown
And feast with abandon
We'll sleep when the morning comes
And we'll rise by the sound of the birdsongs
Perhaps her lack of sleep for these starlit dreams is catching up with her, as with one extra spin she sees a shadow grow over her shoulder, sees the jagged, toothy shapes on the soaked grass ahead begin to crack open like an egg, revealing the shape of a human head. Abruptly, it is known that this is not simply getting herself dizzy.
“AH!”
She trips as she attempts to spin on her heel, and for the third time since they’ve properly met, Zetsu catches her in his arms. His eyes— one complete and one merely a circle— shine like will-o-wisps, like her fireflies that flutter blinking lights around the ankles and knees.
The spirit of the trees smiles ever so softly with half of his face.
“So...you’re a little ghost after all.” Nearly like Tobi did before, she’s kept in this dip, forced to feel herself in his grasp, at his mercy lest gravity take her the rest of the way down. She watches the way that his arms grasp not through his sleeves but the middle of his cloak, like the massive green structure around his skull must go further down his body than just the shoulders. It’s all too staggering for her to have a quip, an explanation more than stuttering “I-I-I-”s. He’s so calm; is he mad?
Wait…
She finds her tongue, the monster’s namesake.
“A...ghost?”
“Yes, of course you are. I can see it now,” White Zetsu speaks more to himself than to her, yellow orbs drinking her in. Then he and the dark one take turns in their revelation:
“The fear.”
“The whimsy.”
“The affinity for death.”
“The desire to live.”
What the heck is he talking about?! The only thing on her mind, now that she can talk, is to try to get herself out of trouble, wiggle out of his hands. “What? What are you— Huh—?” His one full eye crinkles the bottom lid up as he grins. To her horror, it is distinctly in tease.
“You’re not allowed outside alone, you know.”
Electricity shivers down her spine, makes her breath hitch as he looms over her. She tries to counter: “I— I was told so. Kakuzu told me—”
“You misunderstand.” As Black Zetsu speaks, she gives a surprised, questioning hum, still tinged musical. The white one picks it back up: “I don’t mean that you need to prompt someone to go with you, lest you misbehave.” And black delivers the blow, voice so deep it nearly makes her see a scowl on a blank face:
“You are never alone when you step out those doors.”
Holy shit.
The woman swallows, frog from the lake having jumped in her throat, making her eyes wide and boggling like she is one herself. Breathless lips part. Does this mean what she thinks it means?
Beyond shadow of a doubt, the terrible answer is yes.
“Our little ghost,” Zetsu confirms, both voices at once. He knows. He heard everything.
She wants to scream but she can’t. Simultaneously, a black arm wraps around her back possessively, making her unable to so much as squirm. The white hand reaches up, and almost as if he’s never had opportunity to touch another human being, an index finger trails its fingertip from an invisible target ring on her forehead, down the bridge of a nose that should grow in length for each and every lie, down to the lips that release her secrets. Zetsu loves secrets; they’re almost as delicious as the freshly dead.
“...Let’s strike a deal,” the unearthly creature bargains. The scent of pollen wafts around her again, so soft it’s underneath the stank of the swamp, but so distinct she remembers it from the last time Zetsu held her, upside down from a tree.
It isn’t necessary, per say, to hide that she is dead, but Zetsu finds no harm in a bit of playtime. Where would the fun be found if he didn’t find a way to keep every piece of the puzzle under his thumb, have leverage in case it is necessary? Let her believe it changes her fate. Eyebrows furrow underneath haunted wide eyes. Yes, of course she accepts the wager, but what is it she must give in turn?
Zetsu either hasn’t decided yet or is keeping it a secret. His answer is too plain, to cryptic, too charming to be the truth:
“Continue,” he demands, light voice airy like he’s trying to draw out her breath with a spell. “Dance. Sing. With me.”
The frog in her throat sinks down to her stomach. Her voice is free. Ironically, the amphibian from the night with Kakuzu is no longer here to sing in her place, to fill the silence. Eyeballs twitching in their sockets evaluate the split man, the greatest mystery of all, in all of this twisty-turny dream. He’s made of stuff from nightmares, yes: stark black and white divided and unreal, character design that screams “carnivore”, the way she can never tell what he’s supposed to mean when he speaks.
But.
But.
What are fairy tales if not making the nonsensical, uncomfortable palatable? With the parting of her lips the deal is struck, as if she has a choice. The stranger sings him her story with no need to pick up from the beginning. He was there for that, and she knows it. She begins stiff at first, voice quiet now that she’s being so intensely scrutinized. Zetsu raises her at a matching, theatrical pace, gradually from dipped to upright, a hand firm upon her back and one placing its fingers delicately under her chin. Blunt teeth peek from half a smile.
The first thing, after all, that the spy admitted about her is how well she does sing.
We'll be here when the world slows down
And the sunbeams fade away
Keeping time by a pendulum
As the fabric starts to fray
These lyrics are truer than she ever realized. Will it be this way, just like that? Just him and her till the end of her time, till the sand in the hourglass tumbles down its last grain? Bi-colored hands loosen once she's back on her own unshoed feet, the black one slipping back into his cloak as the white one begins to tug at the fabric. The stranger watches, evaluates as the monster reveals more of his inhuman body. Even so, even struck with this sight, she must continue:
There’s no such thing as time to kill
Nor time to throw away
This near whisper knows the next part of the melody is louder; if she doesn’t meet the need it presents, it will be obvious. She feels her shoulders rise and fall with a panicked breath she tries to control, waiting as he begins to undress. The red clouds slip to the ground, soaking the damp of the earth. He’s split black and white as far down his torso as remaining clothes allow sight of. In a flex— almost like a stretch, waking up in the morning— the massive leaves fold downward to skirt his waist, his arms now free to do entirely as they please...
They are held forward, palms up and waiting. The diptych man continues to send mixed messages with his face.
...Entirely free for her to take back and perhaps, perchance, pretend that she is in control. A hand of fate and a hand of chance are held in either of her own, and she spins one...
So, once for the bright sky
Two...
Twice for the pig sty
Three times...
Thrice for another day
...As she counts her lives and wonders if maybe she can get one more.
The chorus is given another go, and she attempts to skip and jump and dance with the fae that has never left her side. He's somehow halfway between stiff and melting so very, very easily.
Come, come, come, come, come along now
Run away from the hum-drum
We'll go to a place that is safe from
Greed, anger and boredom
The only retort to such a being is to either play wholeheartedly or not join the game at all; the latter is no longer an option. The performer prays to the gods of night that she may never give him her real name in her sleep, and she swings them around with nothing to lose. He won’t be satisfied by dance alone, surely…
...But part of her enjoys being chased, doesn’t it?
We'll dance and sing till sundown
And feast with abandon
We'll sleep when the morning comes
And we'll rise by the sound of the birdsongs
Clarinets again, just in her head. She must attempt to sound them out, humming and dumming so the split man gets some sort of idea of the waltz with sprites and things undead. Is that her now? Is she undead?
Come with me, catch a rare type specimen
Cuddle up with a hesitant skeleton
We'll break our fast with friends
Once we're fed, we shall disappear rapidly
Many moons to the west of here and happily
Our journey never ends
He whispers again, mouth brushing against her neck as he pulls her close in one of these whimsical steps into the unknown, the tone too uncertain to her ears: “Our little ghost.”
Shut your ears when sirens sing,
Tie armbands to your feet
Midnight honeysuckle’s scent is so thick she’ll smell it on herself for a week. The performer closes her eyes, pretends this is all a dream, and twirls with he that may take it all away. There is one comfort: the dream doesn’t have to end if she doesn’t fall asleep, if she doesn’t have something to wake up from. Perhaps the monster knows this is all she’ll ever want.
Listen up and you won't go wrong again
Float along on a verse-less song and then
Get to where the two ends meet
Perhaps now the monster can feel some semblance of control, over the strange spell the witch casts, the song the siren sings that lure others in. Perchance he is playing too much. Zetsu wonders if her sort of death has a different kind of taste, marinated in pale, moonlit gloom and steeped in the irony of human gods.

Favorite Over All the Decades - Week 13, Oct 3 2023
The list of contenders for this poll will update as the results roll in.
1930s - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
1940s - Fantasia (1940)
1950s - Alice in Wonderland (1951)
1960s - One Hundred and one Dalmatians (1961)
1970s - The Aristocats (1970)
1980s - The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
1990s - Mulan (1998)
2000s - The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
2010s - Tangled (2010)
2020-2022 - Encanto (2021)
Overall Winner: Mulan (1998)
The NEW 2020s poll, with the winners from 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 as the contenders, will start January 1, 2024.
If the overall 2020s movie winner changes, I will then hold a new decades poll on January 8, 2024.
The 2020s poll from 2024 and onward (lol) will just have the top movie from each year go against the new ones. If we run out of slots available for all the new movies with the previous winners, I will hold a poll with just the new movies, get a winner, and then run it against the old year winners of the 2020s.
If I remember to run this tournament into the 2030s, I will do an Over the Centuries poll comparing the favorite of one century of Disney animation to another :).
My main blog is @deathsmallcaps and my art blog is @patheticbatman if curiosity strikes you.
I’m pretty sure there is another poll going on like this, I’m just running this one for my own amusement, and because I like to think about these in terms of decades.

It took me a long time to learn that calling something ‘based’ meant you were speaking positively of something. The term literally just showed up one day on my dashboard, becoming mainstream on Tumblr through long and winding roads of youth culture I don’t follow (i.e. probably just TikTok) and not one of you provided any sort of definition. ‘Vampire-Blorbo-san and NeonTwinkette matriculating the Heffalump with their sitting during the Jojo Arc is so based’ is not the rich vein of context clues y’all seem to think it is. I look at that and think: is that good? Bad? Bad in the 90s sense of actually being good? Facetious? Sarcastic? Sardonic? Absurd? I can’t tell. Not on Tumblr. So I had to guess—and my reading of the word was negative. My thought process is that the word was chemical in origin: something that is ‘based’ is something that is less exciting, undesirable, and therefore bad. By this I mean that acid, for all that it is dangerous, is an exciting, fizzing thing, but plunging into a base takes away all the excitement, neutralizes it, makes it boring. To be based, my mind adduced, surely means to take the less-interesting narrative option. Naruto ending up with... some lady instead of Sauske* is based because it is the safer option, the predictable choice, the boring solution. You have taken an exciting narrative acid and plunged into the neutralizing base of conformity and tedium. “That’s based” you say contemptuously, disappointed in an author or visual medium studio who once again were too cowardly to fuck around and find out with acid. Frankly, I think my definition—despite, as I now know, being absolutely wrong—is way more interesting than the actual meaning of ‘based,’ a former term for freebasing crackheads given new lease by an aughts rapper and subsequently latched-onto by alt-right white supremacists during GamerGate before having all that context forgotten to become an anodyne Twitter term for ‘neat.’ I’m just saying: I think it’s based. *Look, I rely on Tumblr to watch Naruto for me. I don’t have that kind of time.
