pictures eventually but a while ago I sculpted a replica of a ~10 day old opossum joey for my final presentation on the species for the naturalist cert. it's just under the size of a dime, I was extremely proud (and still am) of how it came out! especially since I could only really find one usable reference photo to use of one that young. :>

I bring it up because the other day I found someone with a wet specimen of an actual newborn and just. holy shit. okay I've been obsessed with the species for years now. I know they're small. I have made a physical model both for reference and (hopefully) for future education use. I thought I understood the scale. but y'all. y'all holy FUCK.

seeing it in person is like literally nothing else. based on the pictures I thought it would be about the same size as the model I made. it is absolutely not and I've basically become the real life embodiment of the "I've been staring at this for five hours now" meme and I'm not even mad.
