I'm always fascinated when someone at the club rants about "how they just invented T'au to cash on them anime weebs", completly oblivious to the time and culture of their creation. So T'au came out first in 2001, and were obviously conceptualized some years prior, which puts them into the late 90s in their original design. This is slowly hitting "the majority of the populance has no relevant internet access whatsoever" levels of "barbaric analog ages".
So imagine where GW sits in the late 90s - its a small studio somewhere in England barely coming to touch with the first elements of the internet, with the most dominant medium being television which... is not really about "exotic" shows from the other end of the world? Those get ported over when they have proven to be a hit in their own country mostly.
And without the internet as we know it today, the anime community just... did not exist. You have to understand that the whole concept of online anime culture centred around piracy, fansubs, fanart, and the creation of the term "weeabo" was a mid-to-late 00s thing, and it took almost another decade before "weeb" was somewhat reclaimed and no longer an online-slur.
There was a whole generation that grew up with (often horribly localized) japanese shows on TV (Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon) which came over with some delay to their release in Japan. By the time this generation came to congregate into online spaces and form any sort of fan-identity and culture, the T'au and their battlesuits had already been a design over a decade old.
"But wait isn't Gundam from the 70s"? Yes, that is totally correct. However, this is the one glaring mistake people make: you cannot compare modern day media content circulation around the globe to the analog ages. Those of us who remember these barbaric analog times know how it was: you just did not know stuff existed. If it was not in the newspaper or on the telly, it might as well not exist unless you knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy.
Sure, the Internet was slowly becoming a thing that found widespread use, but it would still take a while - not to mention the technical limitations. No streaming episodes. You start the download (if you can find someone who hosted the file of a series you had to know even existed first) somewhere around lunch, to hopefully get something to watch in the afternoon. Oh and also that blocked the household's phone-line and if the download cancelled for whatever reason then it was back to square one. Under such conditions, the online community we know today could simply not exist, as the alternative was importing stuff from the other end of the world for quite the money, or hoping a really shoddy localized VCR-tape ended up at your Blockbuster-equivalent.
Of course there was anime before that time, even those regarded absolute classics in the west, but those mostly achieved that rank over here in retrospective. When in the late 00s people wanted to watch stuff and had the ability to do so they shared what was considered "the classics" first (shared to the best of their ability with one episode cut into 5 parts on youtube with sometimes very questionable subtitles).
So even if we assume there was someone at GW in the 90s who was a total "proto-weeb" and Gudam-fan, there was literally no reason to "make knock-off Gundams" because the miniscule western wargaming audience SIMPLY DID NOT KNOW THE STUFF.
You can't make a marketing ploy to reference something your average consumers have never heard off. If anything, the creation of the T'au as a robotic-centred faction was inevitable: they needed a design that could hold their own in the setting, but Necrons hogged the full-robot niche, Imperials were weird cyborgs, Orks the "madman-scrap-tech", and Nids the "biotech". The only thing left here was "not full robot but also very clean and efficient" - and just like that, the Battlesuits and Drones were born.
It was only in later years when the Internet had come into full swing where they decided to go full-suit with releases such as the Riptide, but if we talk about the OG design of T'au and the first decade? Nothing to do with anime or "fishing for weebs". The fish would not be coming to that spot for almost a decade, and it would take a bit more before their numbers were plentyful enough to make it worth casting a line out.

Decemberween '23 — The Poorhammer Podcast
I don’t play Warhammer. I don’t have the little miniature boys, I don’t have the equipment for painting them, I don’t have the space to paint them, one of them cool little lamps for making them look good while you paint them. I can’t really identify the mechanical differences between Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar and what the point of the play experiences are and how they differ one from another. If I’m sitting down at a table with at least one friend and some miniatures and hours of investment, I’m going to play 4th edition D&D —
— the best edition of D&D —
and not the heavy metal gameplay experience that is Warhammer Of Some Variety. None of this is to say, however, that the game lacks appeal, and like a gawker on a roadside attraction, I still pay attention to the space. Mostly, however, through the podcast Poorhammer, which is about getting into the game while spending as little money as possible.
The Poorhammer podcast have a couple of threads of content, as many variety podcasts do. The conception of budget as it applies to Warhammer is an interesting one because the budget is not equally divided in the game mechanical system; there are expensive units that aren’t good, and there are good units that aren’t expensive, but also, there are definitely the inverse, and there are ways that your army can be constructed that reach a game state (minimum points required) that don’t necessarily represent a chance to play the game in a fun and balanced way.
They talk about it.
And it’s weird.
The $500 40K Army Challenge - How many factions can still be called AFFORDABLE?
Watch this video on YouTube
It’s one of the things that Warhammer has as a game that makes for a weird comparison to Magic: The Gathering. Like, you can take the cheapest cards for Magic: The Gathering, put them together, they’re pre-built, and play them against one another. They’re perfectly good, operating play devices and sure, players don’t have to play with them, but they work.
Warhammer is a strange thing where you can build an entire army and construct it and then the rules can change and your army is not only not valid, but it might not even be able to interact with another person and that’s after you invested labour in it. It’s not just ‘this hobby is expensive’ but rather ‘you can make errors in operation that involves extremely expensive pieces of hardware that wind up not being appropriate for you to use at all, and they don’t have much resale value.’
That’s what I find interesting about this podcast: In this episode, they talk about the idea of making a functional army for $500, from a newcomer’s perspective. And that’s $500! That’s a pretty expensive hobby for a kid! Or well, for an adult, but I don’t know what I spend on hobbies.
Finding Warhammer 40K's most expensive (and CHEAPEST) faction.
Watch this video on YouTube
(Really, I don’t.)
This vein is however something that generates data and the Poorhammer crew are willing to crunch it. I like this episode, with its heavy focus on breaking down every army into its numeric value and scale. It’s really interesting to me to see the way that an army can be treated as its component parts in a truly mathematical breakdown. This gives you a cool insight into the armies as they relate to one another, which can make it interesting to consider the kinds of things you want to build an army around.
(I have a bunch of nids in a box, forever unpainted, and they’re probably not ever going to be good, based on how I engage with them.)
Of course that doesn’t tell the whole story of what an army is, because they’re also a task to do – you know, you have to build the army, you have to plan around it, then you have to paint it.
(Well you don’t have to paint it, but you got into the hobby to paint things, right?)
The PAINting Tier List - Ranking Every 40K Faction by Painting Difficulty
Watch this video on YouTube
That’s where this kind of episode comes up. The hosts have hands-on experience painting a variety of armies. What’s more, they build armies based on the things they want those armies to do, which means that it’s not a hypothetical kind of conversation about the challenges of painting an army.
I couldn’t actually, like, execute on this information, but I think it’s really interesting to hear people talk about the material skills of painting. Plus, there’s ideas of different tools, which they expand on – this podcast has episodes about using photoshop to test out particular aesthetics, building paint techniques, and even how to avoid being ripped off by Games Workshop’s paint prices.
Particularly what I liked about this is the discussion of how the aesthetic of an army created a play experience. The meditative experience of painting your little dolls – which is part of the play – is a creative experience (paratextual to the game itself) – is a play experience they’re examining in terms of how it rewards adventure, how it lets you play.
The Infinite and The Divine - Book Club & Review
Watch this video on YouTube
Then there’s the other thing this podcast does, which is long form conversations about the lore of Warhammer 40k. In this case, I recommend this episode about The Infinite and the Divine, which is an example of a Warhammer book that is
Apparently
Good?
Like there’s an actual story about characters in the universe and they make choices and they have motivations and also they’re all skeletal death robots. In this case, the hosts made a reading club ahead of time, put a bunch of notices out so when they were going to start reading the book, and when the episode was going. That meant there was a sort of communal experience of people taking notes and sharing discord notes with the hosts, and then the hosts incorporate that into the episode.
This is how I engage with Warhammer 40,000. I check in, time to time on a podcast and see if it’s doing anything interesting. It’s a cool show, it’s well edited if you watch the Youtube videos, and it’s a fun time if you’re interested in a game with a huge demand without actually having to engage with the demands of that game. You don’t need to track the game, you don’t need to understand the game’s mechanics, but you can still understand how they talk about the ideas and ideology of the game’s world.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

FAQ: Warhammer
I have quite a few asks regarding the good ol' plastic crack hobby so I aim to answer a few of those with this post! And for those unaware of Warhammer in general, maybe this can help you get interested in it!
Tumblr media
As much as I've grown to love Fantasy/Age of Sigmar, 40k hands down. I've always been more of a scifi guy, but I can't deny fantasy has some damn cool characters/models.
Tumblr media
Favorite Faction:
The Farsight Enclaves
Tumblr media
Farsight Enclaves are why I fell in love with 40k to begin with, but the battlesuits they have also play a major role in why I like them.
While every faction's perspective is basically fighting through a heavy metal album, the Enclaves perspective is basically going through Attack on Titan in space. Them being the only real good guys makes it super fun and engaging to read about them. Which leads me into my favorite unit:
Commander Farsight
Tumblr media
He's basically a Gundam character in the complete wrong setting. He's Char without the horrible attributes that make him evil.
Farsight is also my favorite character in Warhammer, and HE is why I love 40k so much. Piloting a mech suit with a sword fighting impossible odds is the coolest fucking thing in the world. That and his novels made me love him too.
I also managed to get his new model and it is absolutely GORGEOUS
Below the cut are honorable mentions to other factions I like from 40k and Fantasy.
Space Marines - Primaris Intercessor
Tumblr media
Space Marines are my main faction in 40k funnily enough. But as for favorite, the humble Intercessor. Specifically the Assault variant but I do enjoy the basic rank and file trooper.
Something about the design (mostly the helmet) I adore and its simplicity, this massive hulk of armor imposing such a menacing aura.
Until I get Primaris Jump Pack marines, these guys will probably stay as my favorite.
Tyranids - Hive Tyrant
Tumblr media
2nd favorite faction behind Enclaves. Space bugs from beyond the Milky Way are cool as hell and being able to field never ending swarms of Kaijus is the dopest thing.
No matter the list for 'Nids, if I can, I'm taking a Hive Tyrant. The big bad boss battle of the Hive Fleet leading the lesser bio-forms to consume. Whether its him or the Swarmlord, his model is the most intimidating on the board, even next to the big boys like Trygons or Carnifexes.
That and every single game I've fielded him, he has absolutely carried so I'm a bit biased. Bonus points for being so customizable too.
Massive MASSIVE shotout to the Parasite of Mortrex for being a cool tyranid too.
T'au Empire - XV8 Crisis Battlesuit
Tumblr media
It's a 40K Mobile Suit. Thats why I love it.
As for gameplay, Its high customization, reliability, durability, adaptibility, and speed is why I love it. Crisis Suits have always jumped into the fray with my Commanders and always turned the game around.
Love 'em.
Slaves to Darkness - Chaos Chosen
Tumblr media
Evil bad guys rocking in armor blessed by their dark gods, wielding weapons called "Soul-Splitters". Don't think I need to explain why I think they're cool.
They've completely mopped armies aside for me ingame, I could not ask for a better """"rank and file"'"" trooper in my army.
Hosts of the Everchosen subfaction makes these guys Battleline by the way. Fucking horrifying.
Blades of Khorne - Mighty Skullcrushers
Tumblr media
Heavily armored warriors of the blood god trampling everyone underneath them in pissed off daemonic rhinos clad in 50 tonka trucks worth of armor. Again, don't need to explain why I think they're cool.
Thanks to the new battletome, they are an absolute bitch to get rid of and they actually hit like a freight train as they always should have. I have an army of only them, and of course my general is just a suped up version of them.
Best khorne unit aesthetically, and I will fight you on that. And fight you in general because Khorne.
Skaven - Stormfiend
Tumblr media
Giant rat ogre super soldiers equipped with flamethrowers, gas bombs, miniguns, and more. All piloted by a big brain rat on their back connected to the ogre. Epitome of mad rat engineering and showcase what I love about Skaven the most, specifically Clan Skryre.
Skaven is actually my favorite faction in Fantasy/AOS.
Tabletop wise, they're okay but they always die first since everyone and their mothers charge and try to kill it turn 1...Which I mean, fair. The times theyre left alone and get to do whatever is usually their last time before my opponent guns it for them instantly after 1 round of their combat.
Just wish their points went down so I can field more without them taking up half my army.
====
There's probably a bit more but thats all I can think of right now.
What are YOUR favorite units/factions?
And if you know nothing about Warhammer, which of these sound the most interesting to you?

Which bachelor’s courses are the best for doing Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design)? What are the best colleges?
Students looking to become industrial designers will want to study in a Bachelor’s program that specializes in design and creativity. B.Des (Bachelor of Design), B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts), and B.Sc. in Design among some courses offer a solid base. The most logical direct road would be a B. DES in Industrial Design, for it leads to product design, prototyping and design theory.
These courses are offered by a couple of top colleges in India like the National Institute for Design (NID), Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay and the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. Apart from this, Rishihood University also offers a B.Des program with a unique impact-focused education. Rishihood’s curriculum consists of design theory and real-world projects to enable students to gain skills that are highly valued by the design industry.
Since Industrial Design is so application-oriented, selecting a college with a practical, experience-based curriculum is a must. Rishihood University is offering a balance of creative freedom along with structured learning. If you find institutions that not only focus on more about practical skills but also make it possible for you to get industry exposure and allow innovation, then go for one.

Who's up next for a refresh?
Now that the Nids got their ancient kits modernized, I decided to check on all the factions over at the Lexicanum that had no relevant releases over the last years.
Of course 99% of Space Marines disqualifies by default. Their minis might be the aesthetical equivalent of drywall, but that doesn't change the fact that they at least got something. Unlike, ya know, Grey Knights, who since 2011 have gotten TWO CHARACTERS and that's it. If anyone would be due for a makeover on the imperial side it would be them, but given how for over a decade GW has tried their best to pretend the faction does not exist I doubt they will get anything. So onwards to the other factions:
Adeptas Sororitas: Got re-released as a faction in 8th, and got a whole bunch of stuff in 9th. Not likely to get a refresh anywhere.
Adeptus Custodes: Also released in 8th with an miniscule model range. How these guys qualify as an army faction and not a variant of Agents is beyond me. Might get some stuff, but no refreshes.
Astra Militarum: Literally just got an update towards the end of 9th, but there's probably a lot of older stuff that need redoing. Likely to get a bone when their codex drops but nothing massive.
Heretic Astartes: Got a whole bunch in 8th and 9th, also not very likely to get a massive refresh.
Death Guard: Became a faction in their own right models-wise in 8th, and got some more in 9th. Too new to get some refreshes.
Thousand Sons: Released with Magnus in 7th, got a bit of stuff during 8th, and only a single token character in 9th. Nothing up there needed a refresh but rather new stuff really.
World Eaters: Released literally last year - we might get a new Kharn tho.
Chaos Demons: shares the range with AoS so no shortage of new releases on big characters and monsters, but a lot of their rank-and-file units are getting somewhat dated. Wouldn't be surprised if we got an upgrade to 2008's Bloodletters and Daemonettes.
Craftworld Eldar: Got a bit of a refesh in 9th, but I wouldn't be surprised if we also get some upgrades to their 6th edition stuff. Despite all memes not a very high priority from what I can see.
Dark Eldar: These guys are NOT having a good time. Most of their stuff is from 5th edition, and since then we have gotten a bunch of characters, two units, and a flyer - all over the course of 4 whole-ass editions. In dire need of a refresh.
Harlequins: lol. lmao even.
Genestealer Cults: fairly new, given how they only got a single character in 9th they will most likely get new stuff, but no refreshes
Leagues of Votann: Literally came out last year, same situation as World Eaters, currently waiting for their second wave.
Necrons: Got a refresh in 9th, most likely getting their 2012 and earlier characters redone this edition (Trayzin, Stormlord, Orrikan) when their codex comes out, although Camoptek-stuff and the Ghost Ark sure be showing their age.
Orks: gigantic model range. Despite solid releases every edition there's always stuff that needs to be updated.
T'au Empire: Got a bunch of stuff 8 years ago, and not much since then. 2 Killteam boxes and 3 named characters sounds like something, but when armies field models from 2001 that definetly does not help.
Overall in that list there's only three that stand out: Demons, Dark Eldar and T'au. If we look at the severety of outdated stuff, the DE should be totally up next, but my guess is that GW will tie their refresh to when the story focus jumps back to where Arks of Omen left off in the Webway. If that happens still this year, they get it first, otherwise T'au gets their Codex early 2024 which is the most likely time they will get anything.

I think one of the saddest aspects of Shadow’s backstory is the reason for his creation, and I wish that more people considered it.
For those who don’t know, Professor Gerald was originally hesitant to work on the “Ultimate Lifeform” project. The project involved discovering the secret to immortality, which is a pretty big demand. But there was one thing that changed the Professor’s mind.
It’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Maria was terminally ill with a disease known as NIDS, and was being treated for it on the Ark. Gerald realized that, if he actually managed to create a truly immortal being, then maybe, just maybe... he could save Maria’s life.
He creates Shadow, who bonds with Maria, and they have a cute brother-sister relationship which I love to see fanart of. It’s never made clear if Shadow’s DNA could be manipulated to save Maria, but given that he’s literally immortal, it’s heavily implied to be the case.
But seeing Shadow’s immense power, combined with the disaster that was the Biolizard, as well as the fact that the professor worked with an evil alien overlord to make Shadow, G.U.N decides that he’s too dangerous, and storms the Ark to eliminate him and cancel the project. Of course, Gerald doesn’t want them to kill Shadow, because he doesn’t want Maria to die. So he sends the two of them off, hoping that they can escape.
But we all know how this ends up...
Maria is shot by a soldier, and launches the escape pod to Earth with Shadow inside.
Let’s just think about how this affected Shadow mentally. And I mean aside from the fact that he watched his best friend and sister-in-all-but-name get murdered before his eyes.
Shadow was created to save Maria’s life. That is unquestionably true. It might not have been the original reason for the project, but Professor Gerald, the man leading the project, created Shadow primarily to save Maria. But instead of curing Maria and allowing her to live a happy life, Shadow’s mere existence resulted in her death.
Can you imagine how fucked up that would be? To know that the one person you were literally made to save was murdered because you existed?
It’s not only heartbreaking, but it’s a really interesting part of Shadow’s backstory that nobody really mentions, even though it has a lot of unique potential.
Like, maybe the reason Shadow says certain things, such as calling Infinite weak and pathetic, is because he himself feels like a failure, because he couldn’t do the one thing he was created to do, so he copes by putting down others. Or maybe that’s why he’s so competitive and boastful, because even the tiniest success makes him feel a little bit better, if only for a short time. I don’t know, there’s probably way more directions you can take this concept in. For now I’m gonna go cry because Shadow’s backstory is really sad.
