i cant help but roll my eyes when people say that the no mercy route is garbage writing and game design because “it jabs at the player for doing it, which means toby didnt want you to play it, which means he wants you to die and fuck off for playing his game!” bc like. if toby didnt want anyone playing no mercy or snowgrave or whatever then he wouldnt have included super boss fights and important lore and character moments in those routes?

#the only reason the characters get pissed at the player is because the game is a meta narrative deconstructing rpg grinding #and in that case the self aware characters know theres a player making someone murder their families and friends… what are you expecting?#it feels like its coming from ppl who think video games shouldnt have complicated narratives and they cant be art #which is such a demeaning and exhausting view to have of video games imo #like…. yes there are guilt trippy elements but itd be weird if the meta game DIDNT get mad at you for all that yknow?#id argue that playing or watching the route is necessary for understanding more of the game like floweys character #like you expect me to believe that toby programmed undyne the undying and did her theme and was like ‘’ill kms if ppl fight her’’#echoed voice
