I think one of my favorite things about Gladiator is how little it relies on dialogue. when the characters speak, it’s to say something genuinely important or insightful. no cheesy dialogues, no unnecessary quips, no forced one-liners. 90% of the exposition in the film is achieved through facial expression, visual aids, and music / direction. there’s a reason it’s considered one of the best films of all time
#no shade to modern movies but. a little shade to modern movies#one of my favorite examples is the final duel between maximus and commodus#not a word of dialogue between them no taunting no quipping no boasting#and there’s like a 30 minute stretch of film time where maximus does not say a single word#it’s incredible how little maximus speaks#commodus and lucilla have most of the dialogue because they’re the politicians#it fits their roles#and you don’t even notice how little most of the characters speak! because every time they open their mouths it’s to deliver a banger line#which is astonishing to me considering the script was kinda written on the fly#how do you make a perfect movie by accident#anyway i’m just always impressed by how much goes unsaid but how much is understood#love maximus as a silent communicator#it adds so much to his character#gladiator#maximus#maximus decimus meridius#gladiator 2000#russell crowe#text posts
