Vox’s got eyes EVERYWHERE in hell. There is no escaping his line of sight unless you go completely off the grid. Which is pretty difficult to do when the entirety of pentagram city is covered head to toe in VoxTech.
However, if you don't pose a threat to him, he really doesn't give a shit about you otherwise, and won’t pay that much attention to your life.
When you first fell into hell, you were mostly confused as to how you wound up here in the first place. That quickly subsided into fear as you noticed the large variety of demons and sinners casually walking down the sidewalk like it was an average tuesday.
You’ll never forget the sight of seeing a demon gnaw off the arm of another and swallow it whole, like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet.
You wander aimlessly down the streets, keeping to yourself and being very cautious of those around you. Your clothes were in tatters, and you didn't have any form of money whatsoever, what were you to do??
You had two options: Somehow find a job in this new horrific realm, or, die.
You didn't care too much for the latter.
This is how you stumble across one of the largest studios/clubs in hell, owned by probably the most feared overlords in pentagram city. The V’s.
You get hired to be nothing more than a waiter/waitress, to serve the patrons of the club, mostly serving them their drinks.
You weren't too fond of the work uniform either. It left nothing to the imagination, and exposed alot of skin, far too much to your liking. The job actually paid somewhat decently though and it was enough to be able to sustain a living. You were quick to rent out the nearest apartment.
One day, while you’re out on the main floor, making your rounds, your eyes briefly lock with the TV demon across a sea of sinners. Call it cheesy, but it was almost like a spark went off the moment he laid eyes on you. Which is something that doesn't happen often with the tech-savvy overlord. Who were you??
He lazily beckons you over with a claw, to which you obediently follow, although it doesn't hide the sheer nervousness written all over your face, He gives you his drink order in that sultry, velvet voice of his, eyeing you up. You gulp slightly and are quick to bring him his order. He thought you were so cute trembling for him.
He begins to stalk observe you closer after that. If you have any electronic devices he’ll watch you through your screens, trying to get a glimpse into what your life was like outside of work. The things you enjoyed doing in your free time, favorite shows, foods etc.
He def goes through your search history.
He would start showing up more in the sections you worked at, oftentimes minding his business, but occasionally striking up a conversation with you.
You did have to admit he was quite the charmer, his smooth voice was hypnotic to you.
OBSESSIVE TENDENCIES. If he notices some creep won't leave you alone while you're working, he’ll take care of them personally, it’s never a pretty sight afterwards. He cant have anyone taking what's his.
You're oblivious to his stalking and possessiveness, you don't think much of it, maybe that's because he puts on a friendly face when you’re around him.
But after some time of getting to know you, He’s the one that eventually asks you out on a “date”. You’re skeptical at first, but decide to accept his offer. And also partially because you were afraid of what would happen if you said no.
(ROMANTIC):
Ngl it’s kind of a situationship in the beginning.
Vox is a busy man, it’s constant work maintaining the studios (especially valentinos temper) and managing the entirety of hell's technology. So, he may ghost you at first.
That being said, He will still keep an eye on you. He often watches through your phone while you sleep, just to make sure you’re safe. Hell is a dangerous place after all.
Speaking of, you’re now under the protection of the V’s, so that’s a plus! You never have to worry about another demon laying a finger on you. They usually never get close enough to anyways.
He very easily gets jealous. He won't show it on the outside because he has an image to uphold, but you can tell every time from that crazed look in his eyes.
Vox is a possessive lover; he wants to keep you all to himself. If he could, he’d keep you locked up by his side all day.
CONTROLLING. He HAS to know where you’re at, at all times, and who you’re going to be with (lest you face one of his tantrums). Also dictates what you wear, He likes to dress you up to his liking, like you’re his own personal doll.
Insecure much?
Say goodbye to privacy btw. He constantly has you in the back of his mind and a watchful eye on you. It can be kind of suffocating at times. The two of you have gotten into a few arguments because of this.
Valentino gets jealous of you too. How dare you take his boy-toy away from him? He’s often giving you the stink eye and will threaten you behind vox’s back. You’re too scared to tell Vox, because you don't want to face Val’s wrath.
You know briefly of his and Val’s “relationship” it all had seemed very one-sided and completely unhealthy.
You're often having to calm Vox down. The man has a very short temper and is easily provoked.
Imagine you pressing little kisses to his screen after he found out about Alastor’s return. He remains stoic, but secretly enjoys your affection.
Some of the pet names he loves to call you include; Doll, Dear, Darling, Sweetheart, Babe.
Pretty old-fashioned ik, but he's a classy man alright?
He tends to be pretty touchy, always having a clawed hand on the small of your back, or an arm wrapped around your waist. It’s more of a possessive trait of his, to keep what's his close.
He loves having you sprawled on his lap while he’s in his screen room, you stay nuzzled into his side, often taking naps while he does broadcasts.
He TOTALLY spoils you btw. He’s one of the most powerful overlords in hell, ofc he has the money to show it. Whatever dingy apartment you had before, forget about it bc this man has you living in a penthouse suite in one of the most expensive apartment buildings. He sees you looking at something in a store or online?? Boom, it’s yours now.
He loves buying you clothes, as I’ve said before, you're his “doll” and he loves playing dress up with you.
And if you buy him something?? He’s taken by surprise at first, he’s never really been on the receiving end of that affection, so whatever it is you give him he’ll cherish it.
If you ever have someone bothering you, or want to get rid of, you just say the word babe. He’ll be feeding them to his sharks >:)
The man is emotionally constipated, ok?? All he’s ever known from relationships is what he shared with Val (and trust me that was a train wreck). He’s rough around the edges, short-tempered and isn't always easy to get along with, and he’s incredibly possessive which can be suffocating to deal with at times. This probably stems from him not wanting to actually be alone, He doesn't want you to slip out of his grasp, so he keeps a tight leash on you. But underneath all these flaws, he really does love you and care about you. At the end of the day, He just wants someone that will stay.

I reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllyyyy need to get the fuck out of here.
The apartment doesn't open till Wednesday.
So great. I fucking get to miss a day of training to get the fuck out of here as soon as actually possible. Luckily these losers seem to sleep till the middle of the afternoon--good luck getting jobs that way. Not my problem. So I should be able to get a good amount of items out of here before possibly they wake up and at the very least before they can get themselves together to investigate. Since I have absolutely nothing left to fucking lose, I am taking the computer and good fucking luck coming after me about it. Unless the police take it as they investigate your CSAM. Broke, pitiful leech loser. You don't fucking deserve to be a fucking parent and you don't fucking deserve to know you have a child, you cretinous fuck.
She came around to bully me, this time waiting till I was off work and could really give her my full attention, and make frankly empty threats against me--that I have to be out of here by the first (I don't know what the fuck the office told her, if she even spoke to them, but I just spoke to the office and they said this lease still doesn't end till the 19th), that she's going to change the locks (per the lease, she cannot until the lease changes, so I can call the office if she does and they can deal with it). She tried to take the fucking power cord for the router so that either I would be forced to run down to the internet provider or lose my job for not having internet.
All this because I took away the TV I couldn't stop her from buying when she fucking broke her laptop, even though we didn't even have the money.
She's made it sound like she's been fucking perfect at paying rent--we've been late several times, thanks to her. So I'm sitting across the desk as the gal in the office goes through what shitty tenants we've been, and I'm just fucking dying inside, because no one actually gives a shit if I wasn't personally submitting rent. No one gives a shit that previous management fucked up the paperwork. I'm going to be stuck here till they just fucking kill me.
Previous management also kinda fucked us because they somehow didn't have the cats on file, even though I swear I was forthcoming about them. Like, I want to keep the cats, I want a decent rental history, I don't want to get evicted over like, rent theft or whatever, or be forced to surrender my cats.
My ex is such a fucking coward, she couldn't even come up here alone, she had to have her brainfucked croney with her. So as she's lying to me, getting me fucking riled up, this girl is just nodding along. Like, who the fuck are you, get the fuck out of my home. "It's my home". No it fuckin-a it's not. You are a fucking guest and a fucking child. You are still wet behind the ears. Or, you could stick around and stop making croney faces and fucking listen to what is going on here, because when she's used you all up, this is your future. She says she loves you today. She loves her vision of you, the idea, the fantasy. She doesn't give a shit who you actually are or who you actually want to be.
And you're going to arrive into a future where you'll see history repeating in front of your eyes, but she's got a new plaything this time and you're the one she has stolen from.
Either that, or you're as shitty and monstrous a person as she is, in which case, best wishes. Never fucking come near me again.

Hello, sorry if this is weird. I've seen people talk about this concept called "entitlement to art" as arguments against piracy or having to share art, and there's something about that train of thought that bothers me greatly that I don't know enough to refute. I know your big thing is copyright reform and open source art, so what I was wondering is do you happen to know anything about whatever this is? Is it good for reasons I don't know or is it a bad argument? Thank you if you reply!
I have thoughts on this long-stewing, and I may as well bring them out now.
So, to be blunt I do not give a shit about the sacred monopoly of the author via copyright, I care about ensuring creators get paid. These are not inherently the same, but too goddamn many people think they are.
Because, to be blunt, the internet is a post-scarcity system for distributing information. Reproduction of information; if you’re not attracted to things inherent to the dead-tree nature of traditional books; is basically infinite. This is the inherent nature of this system, to view people wanting it to operate as it should as “entitlement” is more than a little silly.
But, to a system built around rent-seeking on limited resources, IE, book sales, it is basically an existential terror, doubly so when they’ve built that limited nature into the system for making a living off of one of the few public services that wasn’t wholly murdered by Reagan.
So, we get the cries of how the Internet Archive’s system (Which at least tries to be sensible about what it bases its limits on) is an existential threat, and that people should just use the system public libraries do with ebooks.
But the thing is, that system is fucking terrible! It is terrible for libraries and users; overly-scarce for users and and overpriced for the libraries. And that is what the publishers want.
There could very well be a version of Controlled Digital Lending that also works to get the authors paid. The publishers are not gonna go for it. Because their endgame is that they don’t. The terrible truth is capital in any form of media production doesn’t want personal ownership like dead-tree books would inevitably convey, they want people to perpetually rent from them.
To view people telling that truth as entitled is horrifying
And, going for draconian copyright systems will inevitably hurt the artists outside of that bubble, because increased copyright enforcement is as steamroller through online artistic communities, attacking those works that depend on fair use and with it all works around them, devastating it so only already established players can survive in a form of net-gentrification.
When you destroy remix culture, the original works that accompany them or springboard from them are scattered to the four winds, because of how dependent culture is on remixing, from the sharing and iteration of blues to the modern issue of sampling that was also put under a corporate yoke and sold back at a premium price.
Again, the people defending draconian copyright expansion say this is a sad coincidence, but on the part of their bosses; it isn’t. They say that if they just would follow the rules it’d be okay, but that too is bullshit. Media often depends on unauthorized circulation or remixing of out-of-print works to keep works relevant (Mah Boi, Keep Circulating the Tapes), they just want to control when they pull the rug out to get back that exclusivity, while reaping the rewards of the free labor.
To view the acknowlegement of that truth as entitlement is punching down; at best.
And that’s not even getting into the hegemony of corporate control that the destruction of unauthorized archival represents. I’m sure those authors who support it have their reasons. I’m sure also the people who burned down the Library of Alexandria, or who destroyed all those original Doctor Who tapings had their reasons too.
History still does not look kindly on them. And to view people who want media to avoid that fate as “entitled” is also something history will not look upon kindly.
And, it’s a special kind of denial to say that these bad results on the part of the action by your bosses you’re advocating for are just tragic coincidences rather than the whole point of action on the publishers’ part.
Because, when you see them talk about it, you see that so much of it boils down to a view that there is no alternative. That either the system as it stands must be maintained, or they will be impoverished. That, to draw from Miss Gender-Neutral-Toilet herself, "There Is No Alternative"
Which leads to the point that, I think that there is an entitlement on the authors’ part. An entitlement to the protection of the current system that elevates them over the unwashed masses or artists not lucky enough to have big daddy publisher on their side.
Because they view it as their only source and they’re willing to throw everyone else under the bus to do so. Which, is understandable, but also the same motive as every Fox News viewer. You are not immune to middle-class paranoia that leads to you sacrificing everyone else (See also: Ao3 defenders, but that’s its own rant)
Like, I cannot be entirely unsympathetic when people like Chuck Wendig go “We have no social safety net,” but like… join the fucking club Chuck! None of the artists outside the system who you refuse to show solidarity with get that either! And we also have the looming sword of damocles hanging over our head in the form of potential mass-purges of our communities due to the copyright shit old-media artists keep bootlicking for! Maybe you should care about that rather than trying to maintain a system which; to be blunt, treats you like shit too!
Cause, if they kill the archive and make their form of ebook lending the only one, they’re not going to pay the authors better. They’re going to keep squeezing the authors more and more, carving out whatever gains they get from the bad system, they’ll just get extra delicious kromer from screwing the audiences and libraries too.
Cory Doctorow once wrote that there were two primary forms of wealth in the US, that maintained through labor and that maintained through property ownership. And he talked about how things went to shit when we threw away our gains from labor for the sake of gaining more wealth from property ownership, which the capital class proceeded to eat out lunch on and make a vital public good significantly worse for everyone while doing so.
Now, while he was talking about home ownership in this context, it 100% certainly also applies to wealth from copyright. Because, again, Cory fuckin Doctorow. And I think published creators should stand more with their artistic bretheren outside the system; whom copyright threatens to screw; instead of the bosses that impoverish culture and laborer alike. Prosperity from solidarity.
While I don’t think we have anywhere near the infrastructure to act on it (Hence why I look so dimly on Patricia Taxxon’s view of things), we need to start pushing for it and we need to do that now, and we need to resist any efforts made to core out sharing culture or circulation of out-of-print media in the meantime; because once a piece of media is gone, it’s gone for good.
To be blunt, if the economic model your livelihood is dependent on needs false scarcity to survive, it’s time for a new fucking economic model. Trying to cling to the old one is just its own form of entitlement.

The fact that we can simply abolish data-caps (without networks falling over) and the liquid ban (without planes blowing up) reveals that these supposed existential threats were, in fact, arbitrary, authoritarian, rent-seeking bullshit.

I've been thinking a lot about what a covid stimulus package could and should look like, and what the possible failure modes and transformative changes could be. Obviously, there's real risk of inflation if handled wrong, because production has halted, so more money could end up chasing fewer goods. That gets ugly quick.

They want giant bailouts for the companies they own stocks in, not transformative change. They use the neolib tactic of throwing out a lot of jargon to instil a sense of your technical illiteracy. Complexity is a con-artist's go-to tactic, after all – it's why proposition bets are so complicated, so you can't do the odds in your head (see also: craps tables).
But not every economist believes that sociopathy is pareto optimal. Leading lights like Stephanie Kelton, the mother of Modern Monetary Theory, who can go toe-to-toe with oligarch-apologists from the Chicago School, explaining how public debt really works.
Kelton and AOC appeared on this week's Deconstructed podcast with Mehdi Hasan to discuss the true scale of the bailout that will be needed (far more than $1T) to get the economy working again. That number can come down (by lowering working peoples' outgoings through rent/mortgage/student loan holidays, etc). But the lesson of 2008 is that to be credible, stimulus must be transparent and aimed at the public good, not the donor-class.

Otherwise, Congress risks having its hands tied: it might inject an inadequate and corrupt stimulus that benefits its cronies, then be unable to follow that on with a people's bailout that would help us all.
AOC: "Look at this kind of trash pile of legislation the Republicans have just introduced. I've never seen such a thing in my life of, we're going to give the neediest people less. And we're going to give people who are you know, need help but don't need as much help more."
Kelton: "What people mean when they say, you know, oh, Senator Sanders, you want Medicare for All or you want to make public colleges and universities tuition free, you want to cancel student debt, how are you going to pay for it? Where is the money going to come from? What that means in beltway speak is how are you going to offset all of that spending with new revenue from somewhere else, or by spending less in defense or some other category, the budget?"
"When you do a piece of legislation that's 'paid for,' it means you're putting the 50 billion in and it goes to some parts of the economy, and you're taking 50 billion out of some other parts of the economy so that you're not deficit spending."
"We've been so badly educated to respond to deficits as something that's fiscally irresponsible, reckless. It isn't. The government is committing to dropping dollars into the economy without ripping them right back out again. It's exactly what we want them to do right now."
Kelton's work on Modern Monetary Theory is transformative. Her lectures present both a powerful descriptive account of how money works in the economy and a prescriptive account of how we can use that knowledge to make a better, more prosperous world.

At issue: Art Ask Agency is upset that someone is counterfeiting their unicorn-logo merch, such as this unicorn-scented candle:

But Illinois is in covid lockdown, so its case against a bunch of John Doe (alleged) counterfeiters is on hold. Their lawyer has sent a string of motions to the court asking for an emergency hearing so they can proceed, despite the fact that the court clerks are operating on reduced staff and only dealing with matters of the utmost urgency.
The judge is Not Impressed: "At worst, Defendant might sell a few more counterfeit products in the meantime. But Plaintiff makes no showing about anticipated loss of sales. One wonders if fake fantasy products are experiencing brisk sales at the moment."
The judge takes notice of the time a telephonic hearing would consume, "especially given the girth of the Plaintiff's filings."
"Plaintiff argues that it will suffer an 'irreparable injury' if this court does not put a stop to the infringing unicorns and knock-off elves."
"The world is facing a real emergency. Plaintiff is not."

Marc Davis's Haunted Mansion (permalink)
Along with Passport to Dreams Old and New, the Long Forgotten Blog is the best source of information on the history, design, and evolution of Disney theme-parks.

But Long Forgotten focuses on a single ride, the glorious, brilliant Haunted Mansion.
The history of the Haunted Mansion was completely upended in late 2019, when Christopher Merritt published his "Marc Davis in His Own Words," a two-volume compendium of journals and interviews with the legendary Imagineer, who was Merritt's mentor.

Merritt is an Imagineer, an artist, and a historian, who has direct, lifelong connections with the original Imagineering team. He has unparalleled access, inside knowledge and perspective. So yeah, that is a fucking great book.
Marc Davis was the best character designer in the original Imagineer cohort: he created the Country Bears, the Pirates, and the Haunted Mansion ghosts. He was a spectacular visual gag master, too. And he was one of the (many) legendary Imagineers who had a hand in designing the Haunted Mansion. That ride had so many different iterations, drafts, plans and schemes, and the final product is so wonderful in part because of their remnants.
But Davis actually designed a full-on Haunted Mansion attraction, from start to finish, and those plans are kicking around. Based on those, Long Forgotten has created a narrative account of what it would be like to tour "Marc Davis's Haunted Mansion."

It's…interesting. Davis had some really fun ideas like meeting up with a talking bust (or raven).
And there are great gags (Davis designed the "three-part" stretching portraits, after all).
I mean. this would have been so freaking boss.
But the real meat is something called "The Most Dangerous Ghost":
"The final picture is perhaps behind black drapes which raise as the ghost host calls out attention to it. As the drapes part we see a painting that has everything in it except a figure. There is perhaps a vague image where the figure should be. The ghost host reacts in a frightened manner. He explains that this is terrible because this is the most dangerous ghost in the mansion. When he climbs out of his picture he mingles with the guests until he has turned one of them into a ghost. He describes the ghost's appearance and its omnipotent powers. He suggests again that everyone should stay in a tight group; this evil ghost loves to pick off stragglers. He suggests that the group be wary of sliding panels, gusts of cold air and etc."
Long Forgotten: "The MDG character undercuts the intellectually sloppy notion that all Davis cared about was making the HM funny."
LF goes on to make a good case that Davis wanted to incorporate many of Rolly Crump's gorgeous "Museum of the Weird" designs into his Mansion.
Davis's seance room seems to flirt with MDG some more: "The presence of the villain ghost makes itself felt and these older retired ghosts are frightened. Whatever we have used to indicate the nearness of the villain ghost would be repeated here."
Davis once planned for a Mansion filled with "working class ghosts" (carpenters, soldiers, boxers, etc). The only ones that survived were the coachmen in the graveyard sequence.
And his bride sequence was very explicit about wedding-night murders, culminating with MDG manifesting amid the guests: "He starts a wild mocking laugh. It clouds up outside. The curtains blow inward. It starts to rain along with thunder and lightning. "Outside we see a figure take form and it moves into the room. The rain comes into the room with the figure and a pool of water forms around its feet."
This is gorgeously scary, but as Long Forgotten points out, it has little re-play value (similar to Tomororwland's Alien Encounter): "The gag about the Ghost Host revealing himself as the Most Dangerous Ghost has the obvious disadvantage that it can surprise you only once. Pretty soon everyone knows the 'secret,' and as its usefulness as a genuine shock or scare tactic fades its status as pure camp inevitably increases."
That all said, "We learn what we should already know but sometimes forget: Marc Davis was never an imperious, one-man show. He was a team player. He interacted creatively with the work already done by previous Imagineers, displaying in this outline nothing but respect for what was good in what they had done."
