Father: Goodnight! Love you!! Sleep well!! Me: Goodnight!! -10 minutes later- Internet: *suddenly goes out without warning* Me: Fuck that bastard.
Seriously, he has the audacity to say how he loves us as his kids, then just turns off the wifi for literally no reason and refuses to give one at all, AND he doesn't even warn us. We can't say goodbye or goodnight to friends. We can't finish game matches. It just… gets suddenly disconnected and people wonder where the fuck we went, and games ban us for exiting matches in the middle of them. All because a fuckass of a father who just chooses to punish us without explanation or reason when we've done absolutely nothing whatsoever to even indicate we upset him and we did everything he asked without him even asking.
#and yet he has the audacity to force us to pay him 75 a month to help him with expenses#which includes phone and internet payments so technically we are contributing to paying#and he just takes that shit away from us without word or reason and says he just can do it so he does#thats why i stopped paying him tbh and when i get a job again i plan to get my own internet#and my own phone as well so that i have total control and he doesnt have shit#for now i just change my ip every day on every device and router connection#and that gets around the issue but it sucks that i gotta do that

Tax deductions with Accounting Software in Pakistan
Erpisto #1 Accounting Software in Pakistan There is a lot of confusing and contradictory information available. It's difficult to grasp what a sole owner needs to do to understand the tax ramifications of running their business between the website and sites with a lot of adverts. That's why we decided to write this guide — no adverts, fluff, or technical jargon, just straightforward, easy-to-understand facts. Are you paying attention to what we're saying?
As a solo proprietor, you're always looking for ways to save money and increase your profits.
We understand. So, let's discuss about tax deductions for sole proprietorships.
The quick version is that more deductions equals lower taxes.
As a sole proprietor, it's in your best interest to take advantage of and maximize tax deductions. They'll lower your tax bill, allowing you to put more money into your company.
It's not easy to file taxes as a sole owner, so don't fret. We're here to assist you.
To begin, we'll go through the fundamentals of a sole proprietorship and how it's taxed. Then we'll go through many tax deductions you should be aware of and how to take advantage of them.
Erpisto #1 Accounting Software in Pakistan
What are the signs that I'm a sole proprietor?
That is an excellent question. To assess your tax responsibilities, you must first decide if you are a sole proprietor. This is required in order to calculate your deductions!
Ownership is not restricted to a single industry. A lone proprietor is a person who owns and operates their own firm. Because it is not a legal corporation, the owner is responsible for all financial and legal obligations.
Even if you work as an independent contractor for one or two companies, you are very certainly a sole owner. In most cases, employers do not deduct taxes from an independent contractor's pay. You're probably a lone owner if no one is withholding your taxes.
The simplicity of starting a business as a lone owner is appealing. It's by far the simplest business to start because all you need is yourself and a set of abilities. Here's an example of a sole proprietorship business to get you started:
Services for computer repair
Freelance writing or graphic design are two options.
Photography for a landscaping or lawn service
Do sole proprietors have to pay taxes on a quarterly basis?
If you're new to working for yourself, you'll need to brush up on your tax knowledge.
One significant distinction is the payment of estimated taxes. Because your company does not deduct this money from your paycheck, you must make these every quarter to assist you meet your tax obligations.
If you work with an accountant, they can assist you in calculating your quarterly single proprietor taxes.
You'll need to know your net profit or loss to make accurate payments. Any net income over $400 earned each year must be paid to the Accounting Software in Pakistan.
What is the best way for a sole proprietorship to pay taxes?
It's time to start thinking about taxes now that you've determined you're a sole owner. We understand that this isn't the most enjoyable subject.
We'll break things down for you and make the process a little easier.
The quickest and most convenient way to pay your lone proprietor taxes is to go to the website and pay online. You have the option of using your bank account, a debit card, or a credit card. You can plan payments in advance by using your bank account. Those paying by debit or credit card can now make a payment over the phone. You can send a check, but the fastest way is to do so online. If you can't pay your tax bill right away, you can set up a payment plan. It's worth noting that this figure could contain interest and late fees. Don't forget to visit the website of your state's Department of Revenue. They are in charge of state sole proprietorship taxes, and it is to them that you must submit your state payment. While you may owe less in state taxes than in federal taxes, it's still vital to pay them.
Do sole proprietorships have to pay sales tax?
As a result, if you manage a flower shop or an internet store, you'll have to pay state taxes on the items you sell. The state in which you live will determine your tax rate.
You won't have to pay sales taxes on your services if you're a writer or graphic designer, but you will have to pay state sole proprietorship taxes on the money you make.
What is the procedure for a lone proprietor to receive a tax refund?
Overpaying on quarterly projected payments is the greatest way for a solo proprietor to seek a refund. If you pay more than you think you owe, you'll have a better chance of getting a refund when you file your return.
If you pay more in the hopes of getting a refund, you'll miss out on the opportunity to put that money to better use throughout the year.
As a lone proprietor, what expenses may you deduct?
Now comes the fun part. Let's speak about the deductions you can take as a sole proprietor when submitting your taxes.
You can have a lot of inquiries, such as "how much of my phone can I deduct from my taxes?" or “Can a home repair be written off?”
Each of these is covered in detail in the sole proprietorship standards. However, to save you time (which we understand is valuable as a business owner), we've compiled a list of significant deductions to be aware of. This will assist you in lowering your sole proprietorship's tax burden.
Is it true that our initial costs are tax deductible?
You're well aware that beginning a business is a difficult task.
It's also quite costly.
You can, fortunately, deduct some of your charges. In your first year in business, the Accounting Software in Pakistan will allow you to claim up to $5,000 in deductions. Advertising, travel, and fees linked with services or consultants are examples of these costs.
All of your beginning costs should be treated as capital expenses, according to the IRS. While interest and taxes can be deductible in some situations, they cannot be deducted as startup costs on sole proprietorship taxes.
Getting your firm off the ground costs a lot of money.
Starting a business as a sole proprietorship has one of the lowest entry barriers. However, you will need to invest some money to get your idea off the ground, just like any other firm. Many of these costs can be deducted from your taxes as a sole proprietor.
The majority of businesses require a website. There are fees associated with getting a site online, whether you develop it yourself or hire an expert. You'll need to get a domain name and create landing pages, among other things. Each of these goods has a price tag attached to it. You may deduct each as a business cost on your single proprietorship taxes, which is wonderful news.
Continuing education is important.
Perhaps you'd want to attend a few classes to extend your horizons.
The cost of your own schooling is deductible. You can subtract classes that help you maintain or develop your abilities in your current field.
You must be able to demonstrate that the knowledge you received maintains or enhances the job-related abilities.
If you're an accountant, taking a culinary class is unlikely to be tax deductible (but it may save you money on client dinners).
Deductions for health-insurance premiums
You probably bought insurance from a private company or the Healthcare Exchange.
In most cases, you'll be able to deduct the cost of any health, dental, or eligible long-term care insurance you buy.
You, your spouse, and any dependents may be included. These are not only wonderful investments, but they also help you save money on your sole proprietorship taxes.
Taxes on Social Security and Medicare can be written off.
The deduction of Social Security and Medicare from most W-2 employees' paychecks is handled by their employer.
You'll have to handle this on your own as a lone proprietor. On your quarterly social security and Medicare payments made throughout the year, you can claim a 50% reduction.
Plans for Retirement
It's a no-brainer to put money into a retirement account. As a lone proprietor, it's even more critical to keep track of your finances. You can deduct portion of your contributions from your taxes, according to the Accounting Software in Pakistan.
Let's look at two of the most common programmes and how they affect your sole proprietorship taxes.
Roth IRA: Roth IRA contributions are not tax deductible. Traditional IRA: If you or your spouse (if you're married) aren't protected by an employer retirement plan, you can deduct your whole contribution. When it comes to single proprietorship taxes, the rules are a little more complicated. The amount deducted varies depending on the plan you choose and whether or not you contribute to it.
It's beneficial to work in your pajamas.
In today's world, it's highly likely that you're working from home. Maybe that's where you've always worked. This space can be claimed as a deduction because it is used for a business. The Simplified Method and the Regular Method are the two procedures used by the Accounting Software in Pakistan for home office deductions. There are two key conditions that must be met regardless of the option you choose: Your home office should be your primary place of business and should be utilized solely for these purposes. It's where you do most of your business. We'll go over how to figure out how much your home office is worth and how much you may deduct. If you have a home office or a room that is utilized for that purpose.
Simplified Method:
This option became available in the 2013 tax year.
It does not modify the qualification standards, but it does make the calculation easier.
$5 per square foot is the standard deduction (up to 300 sq. feet).
Mortgage interest and real estate taxes, for example, may be eligible.
By decreasing the quantity of record-keeping, this strategy makes things simple.
Regular Method:
If you pursue the traditional approach, you'll need to figure up all of your home office expenses (utilities, mortgage interest, insurance, etc.)
Rather than cost per square foot, the deduction is based on the percentage of your home that is used for commercial purposes.
You may be able to claim direct and indirect expenses on your taxes if you use the traditional technique.
Here's the whole list of deductions you can take from your home office:
Losses due to rent casualties
Insurance against mortgage interest
Utilities
Depreciation
Repairs and maintenance
These write-offs are usually divided into two categories: direct and indirect charges. Repairs and upkeep to your office would be considered direct expenses because they are only tied to the commercial section of your house. Typically, these are entirely deductible. Indirect costs are those that apply to your entire home. Insurance and utilities, for example, are indirect because you use them for both commercial and personal purposes. To determine the permitted deduction, you'll need to compute the proportion usage of these items in relation to your firm.
Is it possible to deduct home repairs?
Home repairs that are directly relevant to your home office can be deducted. Perhaps you installed some storage, a new workstation, or repainted the room. These are costs that are tax deductible.
Unfortunately, deducting the cost of new kitchen countertops is not an eligible deduction.
What is the maximum proportion of utilities that I can claim?
When you saw utilities on the list, that was certainly one of the first things that came to mind.
Because home utilities overlap with personal use, you'll need to figure out what percentage of your home is used for business. You can use that formula to figure out how much of your utility costs you can deduct.
How can you figure out how much your home office is worth?
The Accounting Software in Pakistan allows you to depreciate the portion of your home that you use for business, but not the cost or value of the land. Before you depreciate your house, there are a few things you should know:
When you first started doing business out of your house.
The expense of upgrades done before and after you started doing business with it.
The proportion of your home that is used for business.
Your home's adjusted basis when you first started utilizing it for your business.
Alternatively, the fair market worth at the time you used it for business.
What if you rent?
Since we’ve talked about home office space, this may raise a question: “I’m a renter. Can I deduct rent on my sole proprietor taxes?”
The short answer is, yes. The same requirements apply to the business use of your home.
If you rent space (an office, co-working desk, store, etc.) you can use this as a deduction.
The IRS does have a caveat on what they refer to as “unreasonable rent.” Meaning, if you’re renting space from someone to whom you’re related, you need to pay them the same amount you would a stranger landlord. This situation typically only arises if you’re related, in some way, to the owner of the property.
Choosing a deduction option for a home office
If you're not sure which method is ideal for you, take out your calculator (also known as your cell phone) and conduct some calculations. If the projected deduction is close to the same, utilizing the simplified technique will likely save you time and frustration.
This is one of the best deductions for single proprietorship taxes, regardless of whatever option you choose.
Daycares are exempt from the rule. You can still claim a home deduction if you use your house to care for children, people over the age of 65, or people who are unable to care for themselves. You'll need to figure out how much of your home is used for childcare.
For your phone, there are deductions.
If you own a company, you're undoubtedly wondering, "How much of my phone can I deduct on my taxes?" After all, it's a significant element of your business. Cell phones aren't getting any less expensive, either (as we said earlier, it doubles as your calculator).
The IRS does not allow you to deduct the expense of your home's first phone line. Long-distance calls and the use of a dedicated business phone are both allowable deductions.
Deducting your travel and mileage expenditures
As a lone owner, you presumably use your vehicle for business activities, such as driving to meetings, conferences, and business meals, even if you usually work at home or at an office.
You are free to utilize the automobile in your personal life as well. If that's the case, you'll need to figure out what percentage your company uses.
It is possible to deduct mileage. This refers to journeys taken outside of your typical commute or within the approximate vicinity of your workplace and home.
Meals
The client dinner, oh, the client meal. Lunch is another option. Perhaps some coffee. Whether you like them or not, these meetings may pile up. Meals and entertainment expenses are normally eligible for a 50% deduction. The cost of travel to these meetings is a distinct expense that is not subject to the 50% rule.
When travelling for work, it's common to take advantage of free time and sight-seeing opportunities. You cannot deduct any expenses incurred during your vacation that are not relevant to your business (for example, travelling to a sporting event or visiting a museum).
Is it possible to claim coffee as a business expense?
If you enjoy coffee, you're in luck. In certain circumstances, you may be able to deduct your coffee expenses.
This is not deductible if you go to your local coffee shop for an afternoon pick-me-up. If you're meeting someone for a meeting, though, you can deduct 50% of the expense.
If you purchase brewing equipment or coffee for your home office, you can deduct the cost on your IRS sole proprietorship taxes.
Assets that depreciate
It's rare that most sole Accounting Software in Pakistan have a substantial number of assets having depreciation that can be deducted.
Let's take a quick look at this to make sure we've covered all of our bases. You can deduct a maximum of $1,040,000 starting in tax year 2020.
Depreciation on a vehicle is the most likely application for your sole proprietorship. The maximum depreciation deduction for a vehicle you use for work and that was first put into operation in 2019 is $10,100.
Expenses associated with impairment
If you have a disability, you may be able to employ services or tools to assist you with business responsibilities. If the support is solely for business purposes, the charges might be deducted from your sole proprietorship taxes.
Perhaps you require a computer to type documents and emails but are unable to do so. Buying dictation software for your business might be written off as a business expense.
Bad debts, loan interest, fees, oh my...
Hopefully, this does not happen frequently, but you may have a client who is unable to settle a bill you owe them.
A bad company debt can only be claimed if it was previously disclosed on your income.
Interest on loans that you intend to repay can usually be deducted. This is especially handy if you bought your firm with the help of a mortgage. You can deduct the costs of obtaining a mortgage from your sole proprietor taxes (again, providing you utilize the property for business purposes). The interest you pay on your mortgage can also be deducted.
Clubs and fees for organizations
A chamber of commerce, trade association, or networking group might be a good option. These groups are great for getting the word out about what you offer and meeting other professionals. These fees can be deducted if the organization is established for a business purpose.
This exception is to the IRS rule that club meals are not deductible. Your membership to a golf course didn't make it into the list.
We can help you to help yourself
There are many things you can do in tax season to make it less stressful.
Keep track of all your records. You can either save your records digitally or print them (preferably both). This information should be kept safe. Keep your receipts, bills, and statements organized. This will make it easier to find and allow you to take advantage of any deductions.
Hire a competent accountant. It is worth it to file correctly and get all the sole proprietorship tax deductions. It's OK if you are not a great at keeping records. A professional bookkeeper can make your life easier and prevent you from making costly mistakes. When it comes time to file taxes, your accountant will be grateful for the work of the bookkeeper. These services are also deductible.
Separate your personal and business expenses. If you blur these lines, things can become complicated. You should only make purchases with your business income ( Hint : eating out for yourself is not deductible).
Considerations for COVID-19
The IRS delayed the deadline for 2019 taxes due to ongoing economic crisis and pandemic. It will now be July 15, 2020.
Numerous state governments have changed their tax deadlines. Check with your Department of Revenue to find out more.
Additional resources available for sole proprietors
Due to the increase in gig jobs, IRS resources for sole proprietorship have been made easily available. Side gigs can be anything from ride-sharing to online creative marketplaces. More people are making side incomes than ever before.
These types of work are often part-time or temporary and done via digital platforms. This category could include services such as freelance writing, photography, and design work. Other sellers may offer handmade goods on online marketplaces such as Etsy and Uncommon Goods.
These fields have tax implications. You will need to pay taxes on gig work, regardless of whether it is your full-time job or a side hustle with Accounting Software in Pakistan. To reduce the tax burden on sole proprietorship taxes, the IRS recommends keeping track of all expenses.
You must keep track of your income. This is good business practice. You will still need to report income, even if you don’t receive a 1099 form from the people with whom you have worked.
Solopreneur does not necessarily mean you are in it alone
Even the most financially well-informed, tax season can send a chill down your spine. Many people worry about how to pay their taxes or what they should do. It doesn't have to be lonely filing taxes as a sole proprietor.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the information available. However, it will be easier to have a competent accountant or bookkeeper.
Even if your ability to manage your own records is sufficient, you should consider buying reliable bookkeeping software. This will allow you to keep all of your information in one place. It is crucial to keep good records in order to pay your sole proprietorship taxes. Your life will be easier after April 15 (or July 15, 2020).
Good habits are key to maximizing your business income. Your taxes can be viewed as a way to lower your expenses. Taxes can be one expense that you don't have control over if you are a sole proprietor. It is difficult to reduce rent, payroll, and insurance. You can reduce the tax impact on your bottom line by being meticulous in your business management.
To help sole proprietors do the things they love. This allows you to spend less time worrying about details such as taxes and deductions.
Simple Accounting Tips
KISS Keep it simple. Start small. A sole proprietorship is the simplest entity to start your business. This type of ownership does not require any special communication to the Internal Revenue Service or filings until you begin paying employees.
You are the sole proprietor. If your municipality or county requires it, you can only obtain an occupational license. You, the owner, are responsible for all state and city taxes collected on wholesale or retail sales that your business makes. State tax collection is not applicable to service businesses or most cross-state sales.
A personal liability umbrella policy is the best and most affordable way to protect yourself from personal liability as sole proprietor. It is important to know your trade and keep detailed records to avoid any liability.
Focus on building your business, not on communicating with the IRS. The IRS won't even know that you are a sole proprietor until you file your first personal income tax returns. Schedule C will be included in your return. This schedule lists all sales and expenses that you have recorded for your business. These sales and expenses don't need to be held in separate accounts as required by the LLC/Incorporation form. To provide a tax refund, the sole proprietor's losses can be offset by your day job's earnings.
In the first five years, 90% of small businesses go under or become new owners. You can plan your business to prosper, but if it becomes sole proprietor, you must cease doing business. There is no need to communicate with the IRS or fill out special forms. You will not be subject to additional taxes. Just file the final Schedule C along with your next personal tax return. KISS.
How can you get paid as sole proprietorship? You can simply take the money out as an advance. There are no quarterly forms or payroll taxes. Startups lose money in the initial years. Keep your day job to cover your living expenses.
You should know that "write-off" does not mean you are exempt from expenses. It only means that you will be able to save some taxes if you use the income for specific purposes.
Once you have passed the five-year hurdle you can speak with a CPA to discuss other entity types that may be able to save you taxes. A simple bookkeeping entry can transfer all business assets from the sole proprietorship to the new entity, without tax penalties of Accounting Software in Pakistan. You can then quit your job and celebrate your new income.

How to make telehealth more permanent after COVID-19
New Post has been published on http://khalilhumam.com/how-to-make-telehealth-more-permanent-after-covid-19/
How to make telehealth more permanent after COVID-19
By Nicol Turner-Lee, Niam Yaraghi The coronavirus outbreak, or COVID-19, has fundamentally transformed our lives and communities, contributing to economic declines, disruptions in schooling, and distressed hospital systems. However, the pandemic has generated some silver linings, including the widespread adoption of telehealth that has helped to mitigate the risk of community spread by reducing unnecessary hospital visits and ensuring real-time access to medical providers for millions of Americans. According to a report by McKinsey, in the aftermath of COVID-19 epidemic, medical providers have rapidly scaled their telehealth offerings and are seeing 50 to 175 times the number of patients via remote access platforms than they did before. Some patients have even come to prefer virtual office visits as medical providers have been less resistant to the change and even more willing to administer remote care from an internet-enabled device. Last month, the Trump administration lauded their efforts to relax the legislative and regulatory restrictions limiting the use and adoption of remote medical care. And rightfully so. Early reports indicate various benefits from cost reduction in both medical and mental services to quality improvement, as well as increased patient satisfaction. But given the ravaging effects of the pandemic on U.S. citizens and the focus on health care leading up to the national election, will telehealth still be available, or potentially be made permanent, as an option for patients in need of immediate, primary, or secondary care? Will previous regulatory guardrails be reinstated on emerging models of health care delivery, potentially suppressing the number of providers and patients accessing such resources? To start, certain conditions must be instituted to ensure long-term delivery of telehealth services, starting with access to high-speed broadband among patients and providers, national interoperability, new fraud detection methods, and more lenient and favorable federal and state policies towards its use. Further, as people of color, especially African Americans, become disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in both infections and deaths, the adoption of telehealth practices to address and potentially reduce the immediate and long-term delivery of care will be important. Across the U.S., African Americans are dying at a rate of 88.4 deaths per 100,000 population, more than twice the rate of white Americans (40.4 deaths per 100,000 population).
Broadband networks (especially 5G) will be critical to telehealth delivery
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reported that more than 18 million Americans do not have access to high-speed broadband networks. This lack of access to digital connectivity has far-reaching impacts on more vulnerable populations, including those with medical conditions or those who live in areas with limited access to quality health care facilities. Having access to broadband is a prerequisite in telehealth’s use. Patients require access to reliable internet connections that support high-speed transmissions to use remote health care services and attend virtual office visits. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has revealed the relationship between poverty, geography, education and a host of other variables on one’s access to broadband in the U.S. For rural populations, access to health care is constrained by the lack of local quality services and infrastructure, doctor workforce shortages, fewer dollars, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Low-income, urban populations experience similar problems, making the emergency room their first point of contact for service. Given the historical effects of being “socially distanced” from medical care, telehealth can mitigate health care access, costs, and even remediate certain chronic diseases of vulnerable groups, including seniors, who were more likely to be both impacted and isolated by COVID-19. During the pandemic, Congress appropriated $200 million in funding as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to support the ability of health care providers to offer connected care. The COVID-19 Telehealth Program enabled reimbursements to the providers and last month, several lawmakers requested details on its progress and called for its continuation. But expanding the eligibility and payment of telehealth services are just parts of the larger problem of a widespread digital divide that forecloses on its use by vulnerable populations. One specific area of broadband expansion that will be critically important to telehealth delivery will be the availability of 5G, which can enable mobile phones as the prime point of contact for providers and patients. Smart phones are now much more common and ubiquitous than personal computers and laptops. The type of latency and resiliency embedded in 5G networks can accelerate more reliable virtual connections as well. Further, a virtual doctor visit is a very private exchange, which is a concern expressed by a large majority of Americans. While a PC is limited in portability and often shared by multiple members in a household, a smart phone typically has a single user, and allows for encrypted communications that enable a higher level of patient privacy over digital connections. In addition to incentivizing and reimbursing providers for telehealth use, it is imperative that next-generation mobile broadband networks be made available in both rural and urban communities to accelerate adoption.
Support nationwide interoperability
Physicians should be able to share medical information between themselves and their patients in order to enhance the quality of medical services and avoid redundancies. National efforts to enable interoperability between different healthcare providers have not been successful. Particularly, lack of interoperability between different electronic systems across the healthcare delivery system is one reason for delay in reporting of the COVID-19 test results. To enhance the quality of virtual visits, physicians need to have access to their patients’ medical data including medications, labs (such as COVID-19 testing), hospitalizations, and imaging data. For example, New York City’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform made it possible to merge the patients’ COVID-19 testing data with their prior medical data. This enables a much better understanding of patients’ clinical conditions and more importantly, allows providers to identify high-risk populations and prioritize them in their prevention efforts. Despite their importance, interoperability efforts have not been successful in many parts of the U.S. This is in spite of the more than a decade of nationwide efforts, trying many different approaches to interoperability and billions of dollars of incentives and grants. While there are still some technical barriers to exchange of health information, the most important impediment to interoperability continues to be economic disincentives for providers to share data. COVID-19 has led to fundamental changes in expectations of patients, providers and payers about data exchange. Given the circumstances, patients are much more willing to receive their test results through online patient portals. It is now in the best interest of providers to willingly share clinical data with public health officials and other providers as part of a community effort to fight the epidemic. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has just provided effective guidelines to overcome the technical barriers to health information exchange and more importantly, has set specific rules to identify information blocking and sever penalties for violators. These significant economic, legal and technical changes have created the most favorable ecosystem for health information exchange platforms to emerge and expand. Healthcare organizations and IT vendors should take advantage of this environment to streamline their data exchange processes. Otherwise, demand and enthusiasm for telehealth services will wither as the epidemic gets under control and we go back to normalcy.
Institute new fraud detection methods
While telemedicine facilitates legitimate medical services, it can also make it easier for fraudsters to abuse the system. In one commonly-used scheme, fraudsters recruit Medicare patients to visit physicians for unnecessary reasons and get prescribed expensive medical devices which Medicare will ultimately pay for. In a recent incident, DOJ charged a network of telehealth companies, physicians, and patient recruiters in a $1.2 billion Medicare fraud scheme. Given that telehealth is a new medium for delivering health care, the areas of more susceptible to fraud may be unique and unknown to the federal agencies, making it more difficult to detect and stop. DOJ and HHS may consider collaborations on new models or systems that proactively monitor, and audit unusual billing behaviors related to telehealth services. Considering that the pandemic suddenly increased patient demand for remote care, new fraud detection methods may also improve upon data collection, service coding, and move away from reimbursements based on parity laws to maintain the high quality of services.
Continue lenient rule making and favorable policies
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been extremely proactive to implement a wide variety of policies to expand telehealth services during the COVID-19 epidemic. These policies include waiving limitations on the types of clinical practitioners that can furnish Medicare telehealth services, allowing hospitals to bill for telehealth services to Medicare patients registered as hospital outpatients even when the patient is at home, increasing the payments for telephone visits to match those of in-person office visits, and expanding payments for telehealth services to rural health clinics and federally qualified health clinics. While these policies were implemented as emergency measures in response to COVID-19 epidemic, more than 5.8 CMS beneficiaries took advantage of remote office visits, especially in the areas of mental health. While it has taken decades for Congress and state regulators to operationalize limited remote health care, it took just weeks to implement such changes nationwide. Bipartisan lawmakers are currently pushing for the permanence of telehealth options post-pandemic in a letter that continues to receive more signatures. Despite the last few months of provability in cost savings and care remediation, the fate of telehealth is still undetermined, especially in an election year where health care is often a partisan issue.
Leverage telehealth to address health disparities
Finally, the challenges of being stricken by multiple health factors that impact is all too familiar among vulnerable populations. Lack of access to doctors, insurance, nutritious food, and safe workspaces, among other areas can all contribute to the persistent and growing health disparities impacting people of color, especially African Americans and Native Americans. These heightened risk factors for people of color can trigger a host of chronic ailments, including diabetes, pulmonary failures and disruptions, cancer, and other rare conditions. In cities where Black people comprised the majority of the population, COVID-19 related illnesses and deaths have been disproportionately high and correlated with such underlying medical conditions. For all the reasons previously stated in a May 2020 Brookings report, telehealth can improve upon the health inequities that have debilitated communities of color through real-time delivery and availability of care, provided that broadband access and lenient CMS policies were still made available to these populations. Vulnerable populations would also benefit from the institution of new and improved fraud detection monitors to avoid the deceptive practices of bad actors in the medical community who prey upon people of color, the elderly, and their frail conditions. In the end, measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 have accelerated the availability and adoption of remote health care services. However, as the last six months have largely represented a national pilot to creatively redress the challenges of social contact, the federal government and the next administration must determine whether telehealth can continue to play a competitive and complementary role in health care. The regulatory conditions, the incentives for doctors, and the political will of the country to remedy health disparities and care fragmentations will largely determine if telehealth becomes permanent.

In my post on goals, I mentioned that I started reading Mr. Money Mustache (which apparently started on Sept 21) and actually made some changes as a result. I thought I'd take this time to go over the results of that, as well as document my current monthly spending (averaged based on the last 3 months).
To briefly explain what Mr. Money Mustache is, it's a blog aimed mostly at the middle class on the subject of early retirement, with a focus on frugality rather than on making even more money. He advocates limiting car use (including not only biking to work, but using a bike trailer for groceries), doing your own housework as much as possible (including repairs), avoiding buying junk you don't need, and watching the price on the things you do, as well as investing the saved money. I'd specifically gone looking for early retirement advice for some reason, and have started dreaming of retiring at 40 instead of my original target of 60, which I thought was already pretty good. I feel like I'm implementing his advice pretty slowly, but here's what I can identify clearly happened or was at least partially motivated as a result of reading the blog.
Installed my own handtowel holder (also partially attributed to my New Year's goal, but I definitely felt extra encouragement from the blog, such as perhaps from http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/09/13/domestic-outsourcing-practical-or-wussypants/
Bought a large container of rolled oats and started sometimes having oatmeal for breakfast instead of toast. Also started paying more attention to prices at the grocery store, resulting in buying store brand bread and getting containers of unsalted peanuts for snacks instead of cashews. Also started buying bags of real apples instead of only applesauce. (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/03/29/killing-your-1000-grocery-bill/ and http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/08/23/grocery-shopping-with-your-middle-finger/ although for best results I should really find a store that sells lots of things in bulk rather than doing all my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart)
Bought some weights for the house, which my workplace even paid for with the wellness reiumbursement program (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/05/17/get-rich-with-olympic-barbells/ is relevant, although mine is a small set with 3lb, 5lb, and 8lb free weights, because I'm fairly wimpy: maybe next year I'll go for the olympic barbells)
Reduced my monthly contribution to emergency savings in favor of investing more (Haven't fully implemented the ideas, but http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/04/22/springy-debt-instead-of-a-cash-cushion/)
Bought a hair clipper and cut my own hair (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/05/30/get-rich-with-the-universal-mens-grooming-device/)
Signed up for Mint.com because I'd stopped actually tracking my own expenses around late 2016 (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/12/12/watching-your-stash-with-mint/)
Accepted Azure's preferred temperature of 62 F as the standard temperature for the house after it got colder, except on Saturdays, where I get an extra 2 degrees (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/11/18/first-understand-then-destroy-your-home-heating-bill/)
Convinced a lower income friend to let me just pay off their credit card debt, since I was indirectly paying it off anyway as part of monthly assistance payments I'd started giving them when they were regularly going hungry due to money trouble. This money came from my too-large-anyway emergency savings. (related to http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/04/18/news-flash-your-debt-is-an-emergency/ and http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/11/11/get-rich-with-the-position-of-strength/ although I might be distorting the concepts a bit)
...I think that's everything. I already walked to work before starting to read MMM so I can't exactly count that. But anyway, I promised a record of my average monthly spending too. In order to hide my income a bit, this will only literally be spending: not investing or saving. I'm also excluding the optional portion of my house payment that's being done to pay it off faster, because that's more like investing, and paying off the one friend's credit card due to how super unusual that expense was (and it being more like an investment to me). Also the 3 month period used to take an average for this was Sept 11 to Dec 10 (inclusive) and did not include any Christmas shopping (because I hadn't done any by that point in time). So yeah, here are my expenses for my household of two people:
Grocery shopping (including anything spent at Wal-Mart even if it wasn't food): 438.36 Restaurants and pizza deliveries: 46.18 Mandatory amount for house payments, including $417.27 of property tax: 880.39 Car payment: 365.14 (my past self, of course, deserves a friendly punch in the face for buying a new car, but the interest rate is lower than on the house so it just gets minimum payments) Car insurance: 89.75 (technically paid yearly to save money and wasn't within the last 3 months, but needs to be kept in mind) Gasoline: 18.53 Phone: 60.18 Internet: 124.84 (this will be coming down soon to $97.43 due to removing services and buying my own modem instead of renting) Natural Gas: 12.77 (11.75 is the base charge, and we only heated at all in one month: this'll be bigger the next few months. Hot water is electric though.) Electricity: 181.89 Water + Sewer + Trash: 53.12 (it's all one bill, charged quarterly) Entertainment: 64.58 Money given to friends: 143.33 (ongoing months will have this number at 100) Cost of benefits from work: 80.76 (pretax money which includes health insurance, a dental plan, and a vision plan) Other: 193.49
Total: 2753.31 Total if all debts were paid off and with expected reductions noted above: 1854.31 (I was curious what things will fall to “automatically”)
"Other" for the three month period includes:
My new modem (which at 190.79 contributed 63.60 to that average all on its own, nearly a third of the whole category, and it'll save money in the long run hopefully)
Some tools (hammer, level, stud finder, hedge clippers)
Cooking related things (cheesecloth, rolling pin, bamboo steamer)
Assorted small items that happened to not be picked up at Wal-Mart (Pads, gloves, rubber bands, anti-itch gel, kleenex, erasers, toilet paper, freezer bags)
Batteries for smoke alarms
A hair trimmer
A new handtowel holder
An electric fly swatter
Disposable gloves for handling food
A hand vacuum
Amazon prime membership (charged yearly, but I adjusted it as if it was monthly, since I did the same for car insurance, which wasn't charged in the last 3 months)
A sketchbook (I think Azure gave me money for this, so it may be a little weird to have it in my spending, and the same goes for the erasers)
Patreon payments
Places to focus on reductions for in the future:
May want to switch to a prepaid phone plan for myself and Azure: we don't use phones much at all
Can probably negotiate lower car insurance since I drive so few miles, especially after the car is paid off (which it will be in Mar 2019 on current pace)
Entertainment spending can certainly be lower: Switch games are expensive. Even if I play the same amount of video games, humble bundle/store, Steam, GoG, and itch.io would be more efficient than how I've been the past few months.
I intend to learn how to cook the foods Azure normally prepares so that if they don't feel like making a thing sometimes we don't have to default back to pizza
I've started replacing bulbs with LEDs
Faster showers or a low flow showerhead might help with electricity costs (and a little with water): I bet hot water is a subtantial amount of that cost. Insulating pipes might also be sensible if they need it.
Considering dropping my vision plan from work for a few years: I haven't actually gone in for a checkup with it yet, out of nearly 6 years of having it. I think I need an appointment soon (and maybe have for a couple years), so I should make sure to actually use it once, then not renew it.
Although I'm not really in charge of dinner or Azure's breakfast/lunch/snacks, so I don't have influence over a large portion of food costs, I could try to optimize my lunches better: I've only really tried with breakfast so far. Perhaps after I learn Azure's recipes to reduce ordering out, I can learn some of MMM's recipes and take over an evening or two.
Known increases in the future:
I'd like to get Azure some health insurance while they’re still living here
When I retire, my health insurance will cost more because no company will be subsidizing it
Although I'd like to say the "other" category will be going down, I'm buying an air conditioner next year. It might help summer electricity costs since it'll be replacing a window unit that I tried cooling more than a small area with by using some fans
There is likely a cat in my future
So yeah, hopefully by continuing to cut spending and getting additional raises at work I can cut years off of my working career. After that, I'm likely to take up streaming on twitch and/or trying to make a game as hobbies.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Budget You Can Actually Stick to
If you’re anything like me, you’re perpetually swinging between vowing to cut all unnecessary spending cold turkey and humming “Treat Yo’self” as you order your third UberEats meal in 12 hours.
Which one you’re doing depends on the day — and how long it’s been since your last paycheck.
The result: a pitiful savings account balance, scrimping to pay the minimum on your credit card and feeling like you’re still living paycheck to paycheck even though your income has come a long way since your first job out of college.
You know there is a way to solve this problem. You know that if you just create a budget — and by some miracle, stick to it — you could finally get the financial freedom everyone else seems to have already figured out.
You also know budgeting is a buzzkill.
But if you give it a genuine shot, we promise that we will, too. We’re in this together.
How to Budget in 4 Easy Steps
Creating a budget doesn’t have to be a grueling process. If you take some time to prepare and learn how to budget in a way that makes the most sense for your lifestyle, you can start on the road toward controlling your personal finances in no time.
We’ve laid out exactly what you need to do in four pretty simple steps.
Step 1: Know How Much You Make and Spend
Before you can make a budget that works, you need to know your numbers. We like to focus on a monthly budget, since most bills are due once a month. Log in to your bank account online, and grab your last couple months’ worth of bank statements. While you’re at it, grab your credit card statements, too.
First, write down your monthly income.
This should be your take-home pay for the month. That’s the money you earn minus deductions for taxes, Medicare, Social Security, health insurance contributions and allocations to retirement accounts like your 401(k) or Roth IRA.
If you have irregular income, it’s best to take a look at what you’ve earned over a longer period of time — the past six months, say — and use the monthly average for your budget.
But don’t just stop there. Add any extra money that comes in from your side hustles. Child support payments. Recurring bonuses or stipends. Financial aid payments. Include it all.
Your next step is the painful part: It’s time to log your monthly expenses.
Start with the recurring stuff: Your rent or mortgage, car note, car insurance, cell phone bill, internet, utilities and debt payments. Don’t forget the fun stuff, like your cable TV, Netflix and Spotify Premium accounts.
From here, you’ll want to start adding up your discretionary expenses. Analyze your spending habits. How much are you spending on shopping, eating out and drinks with friends?
To get a full picture, you can put these things in categories. For example, movies, concerts and museum visits can all go under entertainment. Your gym membership, yoga membership and the drop-in rate on that one CrossFit class can all go under fitness.
Look at a few months of statements to get an average for this part, too. That will give you a more accurate picture of your finances.
Step 2: Set Your Financial Goals
If you’re going to succeed at this budgeting game, you need have an idea of what you’re hoping to accomplish.
It can be a simple short-term savings goal like funding a vacation with your college besties. Or a long-term one, like learning to budget so your kid can go to college without student loan debt.
Set a goal, and make it good — your financial plan could be the only thing that stops you from swiping your debit card to buy yet another pair of shoes this weekend.
I take it a step further and mix my financial goals with my personal ones.
For example, I tend to overspend on restaurant meals. But budgeting less for eating out means I cook more healthy meals at home, so I save while staying on track to accomplish my weight loss goals, too. Then, I can use the money I save to build up my emergency fund or pay down debt a bit faster and continue toward my goal of becoming debt-free.
Step 3: Find Your Favorite Budgeting Method
Once you have a complete picture of your finances, it’s time to pick the budgeting method that works best for you. The one you choose will depend on how much time and energy you have to devote to it.
If you feel comfortable creating an old-fashioned budget worksheet in Excel, you can do that. We’ve got a few super simple ideas you can try if charts make your eyes glaze over.
But even after you’ve picked your favorite budgeting method, don’t be afraid to bend it a little to fit your financial situation.
Bare-Bones Budget
You don’t have to spend several hours each month working on a budget. The easiest way to budget is to grab a pen and paper and simply write down how much you make and how much you need to spend on the essentials — like housing, utilities, food and debt repayment. You save the rest.
That’s it. You’re done.
I’d suggest keeping that sheet of paper somewhere visible to remind you to rein in your spending.
Zero-Based Budget
The zero-based budget takes the bare-bones budget one step further. The goal here is to get to zero at the end of each month. It helps you account for each dollar on the way.
Write down how much you make, and divide it to cover all your bills, savings and discretionary spending until you hit $0 at the end of the month.
Although this plan encourages you to get down to nothing, the idea isn’t to spend without regard; it’s to make sure every dollar goes exactly where you intend for it to go every month.
50/20/30 Budget
This takes all the guesswork out of deciding which expenses should stay in your budget and which ones need to go.
With the 50/20/30 plan, 50% of your money goes to essential expenses like housing, utilities and your car payment. From there, 20% will go to financial goals like savings and investments. The final 30% is yours to spend on the fun stuff like restaurants, movies and drinks with friends.
Cash Envelope Budget
The cash envelope system is good for those who have problems overspending on variable expenses like groceries or entertainment.
Review your monthly income and average expenses to determine how much you spend in each category. Then take out your envelopes, label them by spending category and fill them up with their cash allocations. (You don’t need to use envelopes for fixed costs like rent or car insurance.)
When you’ve spent all the cash in an envelope, you can no longer spend in that category for the rest of the month.
Step 4: Find the Best Budgeting Tools for You
Remember when I said you’re not alone in this quest to budget your money? Well, there are some apps and books that can help.
Budgeting Apps
While budgeting by hand works great, your smartphone can streamline it.
Mint: My favorite free app is Mint, which is available on iPhone and Android devices, and is also accessible at Mint.com. You connect your bank account and credit cards, then you set a dollar amount for how much you plan to spend in each category.
Mint will automatically analyze your spending and notify you when you get close to your budget limit or overspend. It’s pretty easy to use and can save you lots of time. The only downside is that the “You’ve exceeded your budget” emails can sometimes feel a little judgmental.
EveryDollar: If you’re a fan of the zero-based budget, EveryDollar is the free app for you. It’s also perfect for side hustlers whose income can fluctuate from month to month. As you manually track your spending with the app, use it to make sure every dollar you make is accounted for.
Prism: This isn’t technically a budgeting tool, but it’s still worth mentioning. Prism is a free app that puts all your bills in one place, so you always know exactly how much money you have and how much you owe.
You can connect everything from rent and car insurance to student loan payments and your Tidal music streaming account, and you can pay your bills right from the app.
You Need a Budget: This started out as an app and then became a book, too. It hinges on four rules:
Give every dollar a job.
Embrace your true expenses, not your ideal ones.
Roll with the punches, and adjust your budget as you spend.
“Age your money,” meaning hold onto it longer, and start to break the habits that leave you living paycheck to paycheck.
You Need a Budget is more hands-on than other apps. It’s also the only option that’s not free. After the 34-day free trial, you’ll pay $6.99 per month for the service.
Budgeting Books

BRUSSELS | EU fines Google a record $5 billion over mobile practices
BRUSSELS — European regulators came down hard on another U.S. tech giant Wednesday, fining Google a record $5 billion for forcing cellphone makers that use the company’s Android operating system to install Google search and browser apps.
The European Union said Google’s practices restrict competition and reduce choices for consumers.
While Google can easily afford the fine, the ruling could undermine the company’s business model, which relies on giving away its operating system in return for opportunities to sell ads and other products.
Google immediately said it will appeal, arguing that its free operating system has led to lower-price phones and created competition with its chief rival, Apple.
Android has “created more choice for everyone, not less,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted .
Google has 90 days to put remedies in place regardless of its appeal — which could involve unbundling key apps and allowing Android handset manufacturers to sell devices using altered versions of Android.
Mozilla Foundation, the non-profit group that creates the lightweight ad-blocking browser Firefox Focus, said the ruling gives it the opportunity to displace Chrome as the default browser in some phones. It has been in talks with manufacturers from Huawei to Samsung about that.
The ruling creates “a huge opportunity,” Denelle Dixon, Mozilla’s chief operating officer, said Wednesday.
It’s also possible not much will change. Google Search, Chrome and the Play Store are popular with consumers and developers. Handset manufacturers could choose them despite unbundling.
“It’s possible phone manufacturers won’t actually take advantage of the newfound freedom they have,” said Thomas Vinje, lead lawyer for FairSearch, the Brussels-based lobbying group backed by Oracle, TripAdvisor and others that was the main complainant in the case. “It at least opens up the possibility.”
The fine, which caps a three-year investigation, is the biggest ever imposed on a company by the EU for anticompetitive behavior.
The ruling could stoke tensions between Europe and the U.S., which regulates the tech industry with a lighter hand. Still, some U.S. politicians welcomed it.
Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut tweeted that the fine should “be a wake-up call” to the Federal Trade Commission and should lead U.S. enforcers to protect consumers. Blumenthal previously called on regulators to investigate how Google tracks users of Android phones.
In its ruling, the EU said Google broke the rules by requiring cellphone makers to take a bundle of Google apps if they wanted any at all.
The bundle contains 11 apps, including YouTube, Maps and Gmail, but regulators focused on three that had the biggest market share: Google Search, Chrome and the company’s app store, called Play Store.
The EU also took issue with Google’s payments to wireless carriers and phone makers to exclusively pre-install the Google Search app.
It ruled, too, that Google broke the law by forcing manufacturers that took its apps to commit to not selling devices that use altered versions of Android.
Regardless of the pending appeal, failure to come up with remedies to rectify the behavior after 90 days risks a further penalty of up to $15 million a day.
EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said that given the size of the company, the 4.34 billion euro fine is not disproportionate.
The Google crackdown comes at a sensitive time for trans-Atlantic relations, with President Donald Trump lambasting the EU as a “foe” only last week. The U.S. imposed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum this year, and the EU responded with duties on American goods.
“We have to protect consumers and competition to make sure consumers get the best of fair competition,” Vestager said. “We will continue to do it, no matter the political context.”
The penalty is on top of a 2.42 billion euro fine ($2.8 billion) that regulators imposed on Google a year ago for favoring its shopping listings in search results.
Neither fine will cripple the company. Google parent Alphabet, made $9.4 billion in profit in the first three months of the year and has over $100 billion in cash reserves.
“What is important is that Google has to change its abusive behavior,” said Rich Stables, CEO of the rival search engine Kelkoo.
Android is technically an open-source operating system that Google lets cellphone makers use for free. As a result, it is the most widely used system, beating Apple’s iOS by a wide margin.
The EU wants to ensure that phone makers are free to pre-install apps of their choosing. It also wants cellphone makers to be able to more easily use altered versions of Android, like Amazon’s Fire OS.
Both Amazon and Samsung, maker of the popular Galaxy line of phones, declined to comment on the ruling.
Google argues that downloads are easy and while the inclusion of its suite of apps help phones run well out of the box, competitors’ apps are a tap away.
It also argues that not supporting so-called “forked” versions of Android ensures a baseline of experience across some 24,000 different models of Android devices. Vestager called the compatibility argument a “smokescreen.”
European regulators have set the pace in shaping rules for the tech industry.
The EU has clashed repeatedly with Microsoft over the years, fining it over its bundling practices and its promotion of its Internet Explorer browser.
In 2016, the EU ruled that Apple was getting preferential treatment from the Irish government and demanded it pay $15 billion in back taxes. The EU has also tangled with Amazon and Intel.
European regulators have likewise taken a harder line on data privacy. After the scandal this spring involving the misuse of Facebook users’ personal data during the U.S. presidential election and other campaigns, the EU began enforcing tougher new rules.

Who Are The Unbanked, Why Do We Care, and What's Blockchain Got to Do With It
My Story of How to Get Neck Deep Into Cryptocurrency, Blockchain Technology and the Decentralised Future that is Now
I had my penny drop moment when I realised that everything I cared about to do with macroeconomic trends, politics and technology for good were wrapped up in cryptocurrency. I had to be involved.
Off the back of the annual Ethereum Developers Conference in May, themed 'Never Forget Why You Started', this short research piece explains how decentralised technology can help 'The Unbanked' and why there is need for all people of all interests and backgrounds to contribute to the space.
Special thanks to the Decentralised Future Fund, founded by the local developer community in Sydney, for supporting me and multiple colleagues with funding to attend, learn, connect and pay it forward in the industry. Learn more about DFF and upcoming funding applications rounds here.
How Decentralised Technology Can Help 'The Unbanked'
Who are 'The Unbanked'?
'The Unbanked' refers to people who do not use, or do not have access to banking institutions. Two billion people in the world still do not have a bank account. This results in reliance on a cash economy, and limited access to credit ratings, loans, interest, insurance, and other financial services.
Only 54% of adults in developing countries reported having a bank account with account ownership particularly lacking in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. India is host to 21% of the world's unbanked population and China to 12%.
This phenomenon does not just apply in developing countries. Approximately 9 million American households are unbanked. An additional 24.5 million households in the US are underbanked, meaning individuals still lack adequate access to the financial services a bank can provide.
Inequality amongst the population of unbanked people is also a major concern. Women comprise 42% of unbanked people worldwide, commonly facing additional barriers to accessing finance, including adequate identity documentation, or cultural barriers. This is despite research findings that women are competent fiscal stewards, that are more likely to assume financial responsibility for entire households and communities. Minorities are also commonly disadvantaged in terms of access to financial services in developed and developing contexts, leading to the need to understand why this is so.
Why Are People in the Adult Population Unbanked:
According to the World Bank, predominant reasons that people don't have a bank account include:
Not enough money,
Reliant on the account of another family member,
Financial barriers, such as fees and interest,
Can't access financial institutions, e.g. rural or remote communities,
Lack of necessary documentation, e.g. identity documents for immigrants or refugees,
Lack of trust in institutions to manage their finances.
Why Do We Care?
Financial inclusion is key for reducing poverty. Without access to savings and credit, people remain in a cycle of poverty and cannot participate in the mainstream economy.
Personal accounts have an important part to play in the founding and expanding of businesses, earning income, making transactions more efficient, secure and transparent, and managing savings (although, savings and accounts do not necessarily reduce inequality within a country).
World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said:
-Financial inclusion allows people to save for family needs, borrow to support a business, or build a cushion against an emergency. Having access to financial services is a critical step towards reducing both poverty and inequality, and new data on mobile phone ownership and internet access show unprecedented opportunities to use technology to achieve universal financial inclusion." - 2018
The development and adoption of new technologies is already having a significant, positive impact on these concerns.
Technology Is Enabling Opportunities:
Technology innovation and adoption is a critical enabler of development. Technology enables giant leaps forward, especially in developing countries where access to network infrastructure layers, hardware and retail merchants is limited.
Between 2011 and 2014, the unbanked population fell by 20%, as 700 million adults became account holders. The Global Findex database shows that 515 million adults worldwide opened an account at a financial institution or through a mobile money provider between 2014 and 2017. This means that 69 percent of adults now have an account, up from 62 percent in 2014 and 51 percent in 2011.
Mobile money services are one example of how technology can improve people's ability to earn an income and manage their funds. Mobile eWallets allow users to store and transfer funds from one mobile phone to another via mobile networks or third-party payment provider. Digital transactions through mobile digital wallets enable less reliance on expensive physical infrastructure, such brick-and-mortar bank-fronts. This is particularly meaningful in rural areas where it can lead to shorter travel distances and lower costs, thus allowing participation in the economy and reducing financial exclusion. Another way that eWallet technology is impacting the unbanked is via microfinance, such as the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, which offers phones, credit loans and financial literacy training through their network.
About 1.7 billion adults remain unbanked - without an account at a financial institution or through a mobile money provider. In 2014 that number was 2 billion.
Practical use cases are evident in both developing and developed countries. Sub-Saharan Africa is the global leader in the use of mobile money (despite the persistence of financial, social and practical challenges, such as loan and interest repayments, and access for remote communities). Digital financial service providers furthering financial inclusion in the region include MPesa, MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and Orange Money.
Developed countries are using digital money technology to create a cashless society as well. The trend away from physical currency in Sweden has provoked conversations about launching a national cryptocurrency, the e-krona.
The movement towards decentralised technology, including blockchain and cryptocurrency, represents a pivotal opportunity to address some of these concerns on multiple levels.
Enter Decentralised Technology (The Web3 Revolution)
As blockchain technology matures; alternative solutions to the traditional banking system that are efficient, transparent and scalable are becoming possible.
Blockchain technology enables access to financial services with numerous potential solutions, including payment gateway infrastructure, security, scalability and identity requirements (KYC) needed to access financial services.
A reality where individuals own their sovereign identity to manage their finances, savings, and transactions in a decentralised, peer-to-peer network with meaningfully lower fees and barriers to entry is being built. To read more on examples of self sovereign digital identity solutions on blockchain, see Civic, Sovrin, Humaniq, Alastria, and uPort. To learn more about tools to address the ethical implications of blockchain technology, see The Blockchain Ethical Design Framework for Social Impact by Georgetown's Cara LaPointe.
It is a pertinent time for people from interdisciplinary backgrounds to consider the impacts of decentralised technology, including the potential for it to create positive social impacts, while this technology is still in its infancy. Adoption is gaining momentum and the technological infrastructure challenges of security, and scalability are being addressed. The space needs experts across a range of disciplines to contribute to shaping and applying technology in meaningful ways.
What Can/Are We Doing About It?
The opportunity to unbank the bank is not just a social cause, but an economical business case. There is a strong market oriented opportunity for existing financial institutions to explore how to capture the benefits of new technologies. Accenture estimates that bringing unbanked adults and businesses into the formal banking sector could generate about $380 billion in new revenues for banks. This is the same opportunity that exists for providers that offer an alternative to the existing banking system.
-These unbanked individuals constitute a large market ready to adopt disruptive financial solutions outside of the traditional banking system. Blockchain provides a secure, scalable way to serve the needs of these individuals, and a number of technology companies are leveraging it to usher in a world in which everyone has access to the savings and credit that is an essential building block for economic growth."
Decentralised technology is a revolutionary opportunity for social and economic transformation. The industry is highly relevant to both developers, investors and non-technical talent, who are passionate about application in real-world use cases.
Examples of Ethereum based Blockchain projects are making headway in serving the unbanked.
OmiseGO is building a peer-to-peer financial transactions network, a white-label eWallet software development kit and decentralised exchange for any currency or digital asset. The protocol removes centralised middlemen to allow for cross-border payments with lower fees and wildly better efficiency.
WeTrust is enabling a more inclusive financial system with a suite of decentralised apps (DApps). The first product is a Trusted Lending Circle decentralised applications that allows users to collaboratively save money with their peers. Benefiting from the finality and transparency provided by Blockchain, this instrument could a transition to enable individuals to build a Blockchain powered credit score.
Humaniq has created biometric identity verification on mobile through face and voice. Bio-identification eliminates the need for formal documentation. The Humaniq ecosystem also features a chat system, contacts (referral) system and an eWallet, to allow users to send and request funds directly without fees.
This is your invitation.
Unbank the Banked
Unbanked is not just about poor people in developing countries gaining access to the existing financial system. Unbanking the banked refers to the concept of moving existing users of the current banking system towards alternative payment and financial models. Decentralised financial solutions also need to attract users to truly challenge the status quo of high barriers to entry and multiple handlers per transaction. Adopters of the traditional banking system now have the choice to investigate an alternative banking infrastructure solution, that is decentralised, high transaction volume, international, and currency agnostic. Blockchain networks could outperform the incumbent system.
It is important to emphasise that technology solutions alone do not increase financial inclusion or mitigate against persistent inequalities in wealth, gender, and other factors.
'To ensure that people benefit from digital financial services requires a well-developed payments system, good physical infrastructure, appropriate regulations, and vigorous consumer protection safeguards. And whether digital or analogue, financial services need to be tailored to the needs of disadvantaged groups such as women, poor people, and first-time users of financial services, who may have low literacy and numeracy skills'.
- Global Findex, The World Bank
There is still a way to go to overcome the barriers of access to financial services for the unbanked population.
In an effort to support the mission to Unbank the Banked, and continue to pursue my personal 'why', I joined the OmiseGO project in Bangkok.

Think It Can't Happen Here? Austin Bomber's Capture Exposes Depth Of US Surveillance State
Authored by Jeremiah Johnson via SHTFplan.com,
Many have argued that there is neither a surveillance state, nor a concerted effort to disarm the public door-to-door, house by house, etc. Some of these are far-leftists, masquerading as conservatives….. trying to appear “skeptically cynical.”
We’ll “game” the thought, to bring everyone back from opacity to transparency.
The Communists, Marxists, Leftists, Progressives, Liberals, Democrats, and their ilk deliberately try to disguise the true objectives as outlined in the Planks of the Communist Party…passing themselves off as “middle-ground” in their stances.
By denigrating the concept of an imminent surveillance state and ridiculing it, they draw conservatives who are still undecided (“fringe elements”) out of being proponents of the idea…further weakening and obfuscating people’s awareness.
The movement of the groups mentioned never ceases: It hasn’t ceased with the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent reunification of Germany in 1990, nor the fall of the Soviet Union…more a “restructuring” than a fall…in 1992. The Communists are alive and well, operating within the United States at the lowest levels of society, and at the highest levels of government. We’ll stay with “Communists” as the label, as they are the end-state and will purge all the others who aren’t in complete lock step with them. They are Communists.
That being mentioned, as they craft their narratives and lie openly upon the television, radio, and within the newspapers, there is a subtle, devious operation going on right before your eyes:
The emplacement of a complete surveillance state of cameras and listening devices, all a part of the “wondrous internet of things.”
For that last paraphrase, thank David Petraeus… former head of the CIA (in name only) yet without the technical alacrity to avoid the very thing he lauded… and hence, his downfall via Paula Bridewell. Thanks, Dave, for your erstwhile contribution to crafting the surveillance state. Dave serves as the prime example: no matter how much of a “big hitter” toward the NWO (New World Order) a globalist or establishmentarian one is, they are always expendable.
The surveillance state has just been proven with the recent string of bombings in Austin, Texas where the protagonist blew himself up when he was tailed and cornered. This article was released by AP, written by Paul J. Weber on 3/22/18, and it seems to have escaped much notice. I am providing an excerpt that is almost the full article. When you read it, you will see why it is so important. Here it is:
How Police Finally Found the Austin Bomber
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The suspected Austin bomber is dead after terrorizing Texas’ capital city for three weeks. And in the end the manhunt wasn’t cracked by hundreds of phoned-in tips, the big pot of reward money or police pleading to the bomber through TV.
One of the largest bombing investigations in the U.S. since the Boston Marathon attacks in 2013 came to an intense close early Wednesday when authorities say they moved in on Mark Anthony Conditt at an interstate hotel. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said Conditt blew himself up after running his sport utility vehicle into a ditch.
Here is what’s known about how authorities finally zeroed in on the suspected bomber after 19 days, two dead victims and more than 1,000 calls of suspicious packages around the city:
___
GETTING THE BOMBER ON CAMERA
Conditt had been careful to avoid cameras before entering a FedEx store in southwest Austin this week disguised in a blond wig and gloves, said U.S. House Homeland Security chairman Michael McCaul. The Austin congressman had been briefed by police, the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
McCaul said going into the store was Conditt’s “fatal mistake.” He said authorities previously had leads on a red truck and that the surveillance video from the FedEx store — where Conditt is believed to have dropped off an explosive package destined for an Austin address — allowed investigators to identify him and the truck.
Said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, “I’m not sure how much they narrowed him down to an exact person of who he was before he went into that FedEx store.”
___
TRACKING THE CELLPHONE
At the FedEx store, McCaul said investigators got from surveillance the truck license plate that linked the vehicle to Conditt, which in turn gave authorities a cellphone number they could track. McCaul said Conditt had powered down his phone for “quite some time” but that police closed in when he switched it back on.
“He turned it on, it pinged, and then the chased ensued,” McCaul said.
Abbott said police were able to closely monitor Conditt and his movements for about 24 hours before his death. The governor said the phone number was used to tie Conditt to bombing sites around Austin.
“The suspect’s cellphone number showed up at each of the bombing sites as well as some key locations that helped them connect him to the crime,” Abbott said.
___
BUYING BOMB-MAKING MATERIALS
Authorities say they also tracked down Conditt, a 23-year-old unemployed college dropout, through witness accounts and other purchases, including at a Home Depot where McCaul said the suspect bought nails and other bomb-making materials.
Abbott said Conditt’s purchases at the Home Depot also included five “CHILDREN AT PLAY” signs, one of which was used to rig a tripwire that was set off by two men Sunday in a southwest Austin neighborhood. One of them was walking and the other was riding a bike.
William Grote told The Associated Press that his grandson was one of the victims and had nails embedded in his legs from Sunday’s explosion.
The batteries to power the bomb were purchased through the internet, McCaul said.
___
STILL PUTTING TOGETHER A PROFILE
The initial bomber profile sketched out by FBI behavioral scientists was that he was most likely a white male, McCaul said. And while that part was right, the congressman said, a full psychological profile won’t come together until investigators have time to comb through Conditt’s writings and social media posts.
Conditt’s motive is not clear. But on Wednesday, police discovered a 25-minute video recording on a cellphone found with Conditt, which Manley said he considers a “confession” to the bombings. Manley said it described the differences among the bombs in great detail.”
Obviously, someone made a big mistake in revealing this information to the stultified, oblivious public… that self-same public of “We the People” that has the right to know, and yet doesn’t understand what is happening.
Worse: The public doesn’t care what’s happening.
Let’s summarize what these main points mean, for those of you who docare:
The cellular telephone is nothing more than a tracking device…as mentioned, it “pings” its position and gives away the location of the owner…along with all of his vital information in the file… every four seconds.
The cell phone’s location is tied into the location of every camera, public and private that has a tie-in to the CCTV system monitored by law enforcement in the fusion centers…from the Happy Burger parking lot cameras to the cameras mounted at the intersections in cities, towns, and suburbs. As the happy cell phone passes these locations, the movement is tracked in real time, and recorded.
Granted, they had a suspect, but they can review all of the cameras at any business at any given time…to show what Joe the Plumber-turned-bomber may be purchasing at the friendly store…and they can tie that film in with real-time with the cell phone.
The vehicle is also the “buddy” of the police and the surveillance establishment. They take pictures and film of the license plate, the car, and glimpses of Joe the Plumber driving it…corroborated by the happy, ever-pinging cellular telephone (the tracking device).
All this data for everyone’s movements is recorded, catalogued, and stored…stored away for an indefinite period of time (forever) until the information is needed as evidence or in an investigation. Investigation! Doesn’t that sound exciting? Guess what? Everyone is being investigated, and all of the data on everyone is kept.
Purchases! Everybody has to buy things, stuff, etc. Every time you pull up to the gas pump, the car is photographed. The POS (point of sale) at the register tabulates and inventories everything, tying it in to the gas pump, with a picture of Joe and whatever form of fiat he used to pay for the gas and bag of chips. Purchases track in real time, access whatever form of payment you use, tying you in with others…if you use your spouse’s credit card, for example.
Cops have license plate/tag readers that can read hundreds of different plates, categorizing all of them in accordance with sensitive data that may have nothing to do with driving upon the roads or their record with the vehicle.
Every Internet search, every purchase, every query, every e-mail is saved and read/tabulated into the overall matrix that assesses the potential for an individual to be “harmful” and stored…to be matched against the subject’s behavior and movements at a later date. Systems are already in place that analyze keystrokes for the comparison and narrowing down of who the typist is.
Every library sign-out…film, music, or book…is saved and kept for future reference.
Biometrics are making the “fingerprint” even more specific…with eye to eye distances, ear shapes, and gaits measured. Any exposed portion of the skin, and the movement and function of the limbs is analyzed and recorded.
Every piece of mail is scanned to save sender and recipient’s addresses and (of course) purchases are recorded within the company and matched against what is sent out and to whom.
Satellites can target and surveil in real time and tie in to all of the little devices just mentioned.
Laptop computers can be traced in accordance with the purchaser’s information from the POS and onward…and the laptops record, photograph, and film as well as putting forth a “ping” of their own…especially when connected to the Internet. All laptop use is matched and corresponded to other places of business (their cameras, etc.)
Association: when you’re on your laptop, and here come Smiling Sam and Brother Bob, each with pinging cell phones…letting the authorities know that in that moment of time (Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time”) Sam and Bob were right in front of you. Later they can haul both of them in to corroborate that you were on your laptop in front of HappyBurger at whatever date or time they have on record.
This excerpt shows that all of these items are in place. Yes, they are surveilling you…are watching all of us. The surveillance is not ubiquitous yet. Not yet. It will be, and soon. They utilized every feature mentioned above to find the bomber. Great. Society has triumphed, and the mad bomber has met his end.
But has society really triumphed? That article gives you insight into how the cage is almost completed…the construction is just about finished. What requires further thought is what they will do with this surveillance once it is in place and ubiquitous. Just a few further thoughts for your consideration. You may want to watch what you place into your e-mails and comments. There are techies in the Puzzle Palace and at Ft. Meade whose function is identifying the commenters.
Don’t place anything on the Internet that can come back and bite you later. The most effective means of exchange are not on the Internet when it comes to information. Blogs, writers, and commenters have already been “marginalized” and their effectiveness diminished because it is an open source. Your true effectiveness in getting things done is at the “grass roots” level…locally, in small groups for discussion. Your “tool of transmission” is a manual typewriter. Need copies? Get back to Carbon paper. There won’t be a recording of what you copied at your FriendlyCopy center…the one with your information in real-time, right under the eye of the happy surveillance camera in the corner.
The one that superficially is to make sure you don’t take more than 1 or 2 paper clips…but manages to send the fusion centers every bit of data they need to match up their culprit (the copier) to the scene of the crime. They’ll also match up his credit card at the register, tally up his total purchases and copies over a period of time, and get plenty of information as it films him walking through the store and out the door.
Bottom line: we’re all “guilty” according to laws they haven’t even written yet. It is all about building a case against the average citizen. If you’re not the wolves, then you’re one of the cattle, in their eyes.
It will become worse. Much, much worse. If you doubt it and do not take necessary precautions, you may find out it exists when they come knocking on the door. It may already be too late, and their song is “We’ve Only Just Begun,” by Karen Carpenter…. but not to smile. They’ve been doing that for years, as they have taken our taxes to craft the very cages that are almost completed. The next step? Not hard to figure out, and it has happened before…as history repeats itself. Think “Solzhenitsyn,” and think of tomorrow.

No CEO needed: These blockchain platforms will let ‘the crowd’ run startups
Something every woman should know - WHY MEN LIE!
GUEST:
Back in May, I wrote about the concept of DAOs, decentralized autonomous organizations capable of running themselves thanks to blockchain technology — no CEO or C-Suite needed. At the time I was writing, there were a few people in the blockchain community testing out the idea but no strong efforts underway. That was six months ago.
As anyone in the crypto space will tell you, six months is a really long time. Today, a market for DAO platforms is emerging, complete with teams, funding, development, and initial implementations.
This is a category worth paying close attention to because it represents the much larger, more powerful shift that blockchains enable. The Bitcoin and alt-coin bull market are fun to watch, but it’s the new business models — and even societal models — that crypto enables that will be the real disruption.
DAOs solve some pretty interesting problems. In today’s centralized organizations, it is difficult and expensive to get large groups of people to work well together to complete a task. Traditionlly, only governments, the military, and global corporations have the money, people, and infrastructure to take on huge projects.
Numerous studies explain the various challenges of coordinating large groups. These include motivation cost (aka “social loafing”), relational loss (you feel less connected), and coordination cost (keeping three people up to speed is a lot cheaper than keeping 3,000 people up to speed).
DAO platforms promise to reduce these costs by enabling the coordination of ever more complex activities among participants. In so doing, they could erode the competitive advantage of a traditional, hierarchical, centralized organization.
DAOs work by turning the current rules that govern businesses into software code, reducing friction in operation. Even better, because they are software, they can be upgraded, modified, and instituted much faster and at lower cost than a traditional reorganization or restructuring.
The reduced coordination costs will have two sets of implications.
First, they will enable an entirely new set of “blockchain-native” organizations to emerge that have a cost structure advantage over traditional, centralized organizations.
Second, they could eventually disrupt the $42 billion enterprise resource planning (ERP) industry, where giants like SAP (20 percent), Oracle (13.9 percent) and Microsoft (9.4 percent) reign supreme, and disintermediate other markets, including lawyers and accountants who are normally involved in a corporate setup process.
A startup might normally need days or week to draft legal documents, assign option or share ownership, begin fundraising, and set up business rules for coordinating efforts internally and externally. With a DAO, you can implement all of that over a working lunch.
Emerging players in the DAO market
Aragon, Colony, and District0x are three of the open-source blockchain projects currently leading the charge in this space.
Aragon’s vision is to make new company setup a plug-and-play experience. It offers any would-be entrepreneur the ability to set up company ownership (via tokens), issue tokens, and raise funds for a project in a matter of minutes. And you can set rules for the new company’s governance by creating rules for which tokens have voting rights and what percentage of tokens need to vote on a motion, project, or rule for it to become law. You can also set rules for token vesting schedules.
Holders of your new company’s token — presumably your employees and investors — stand to benefit financially as the new entity gains traction. Whereas the value created by companies that run SAP accrues to SAP, here the value goes to the token holders who have a direct interest in improving the functionality and efficiency of your company.
You can play around with the Aragon software (available for Windows, Mac, and Linux as well as a web version). The alpha runs on Kovan (and Ropsten) TestNets, and a new version is coming soon, according to the project team.
District0x actually leverages Aragon as a base governance feature and then adds extra capabilities to help decentralized businesses create and manage a marketplace. These capabilities includes posting and listing, search and filtering, ranking and reputation, and payments and invoicing, all of which enable entrepreneurs to quickly spin up decentralized marketplaces. And we’re already seeing some of these marketplaces emerge.
Ethlance , for example, is a decentralized take on Upwork, and NameBazaar is a decentralized marketplace for buying and selling domain names on the Ethereum network. You will need MetaMask to use these, but you can go in there, find contractors on Ethlance or .ens names on NameBazaar, set up contracts and complete transactions. No intermediaries. Secured by the blockchain.
So, while the challenge of customer-acquisition still exists for DAO startups, you don’t need to spend a lot of time creating the code that would allow you to create a decentralized version of AirBnB or Uber, etc. The combination of District0x and Aragon commoditizes the back-end technical, legal, and operational infrastructure of some of today’s most valuable “sharing economy” platforms.
Anyone wanting to participate in these District0x marketplaces (called “districts”) will need a DNT token (the market cap is $27 million at the time of writing). That gives you the right to vote on the evolution of the marketplace (imagine you get to tell Uber what to do as opposed to the other way around) as well as benefit from the value accrued as these marketplaces grow.
Colony takes a bit of a different approach, focusing primarily on a problem we have all experienced in a group: The wrong people get the rewards because bosses don’t have full visibility and politics are at play.
As Colony’s founders explain on their blog, “Instead of being monitored and evaluated by someone higher up the hierarchy, any individual’s merit within a colony is calculated through systematic peer review of completed work and represented numerically on the blockchain.” (A “colony” is what the company calls any DAO built on its platform.)
When you contribute more to a project, you are rewarded with tokens from others in the project. So the number of tokens you hold reflects your overall reputation. As your reputation grows (and, remember, this isn’t an ephemeral concept in Colony, it is a quantifiable one), so does your influence in the form of voting on projects.
Nick Neumann has a great in-depth review of Colony, if you are interested in learning more.
One other player to watch is DAOstack, founded by Matan Field, who has a deep history in the blockchain space, having founded Backfeed and LaZooz. Notable thinker Primavera De Filippi is an advisor, so for that reason alone, this project is worth taking seriously.
The basic layer of DAOstack is fully functional (on the test net), and it is adding a JavaScript layer (for easy front-end integration of collaborative apps), but DAOstack has a few key differences from Colony, District0x, and Aragon.
DAOstack is for large-scale organizations rather than startups and is focused on a heavily modular approach. It seeks to build a “WordPress for DAOs.” Imagine a set of governance plug-ins that can be used and reused depending on what type of entity you want to create. Whereas Aragon is about using blockchains to automate or “smart contract-ify” existing organizational structures, the DAOstack team is focused on giving people the ability to mix and match the best elements of organizational and governance structures to create entirely new forms that work together. It’s like Lego for organizations.
The big DAO promise: Business at higher agility and speed
In the late ’90s, the Internet changed business. We also saw a new set of businesses emerge at that time that were only possible because of the arrival of that new technology. With the benefit of hindsight, it is clear that there was a difference between Barnes & Noble putting up a website and Amazon being a “digital native” organization, even if it was not obvious at the time.
With DAOs, we are witnessing the birth of entirely new way of coordinating, aligning, and rewarding work. The blockchain-native entities built on platforms like Aragon, Colony, District0x, DAOStack, and the competitors that are bound to follow are going to pose a threat to incumbents who cannot react as quickly. More importantly, they will enable entirely new types of organizations that will change the world just as Facebook, Amazon, and Google did the last time around.
Jeremy Epstein is CEO of Never Stop Marketing and author of The CMO Primer for the Blockchain World. He currently works with startups in the blockchain and decentralization space, including OpenBazaar, IOTA, and Zcash.
