in my mind it's not necessarily that dark was ever completely 'innocent' because even at first conception, he was still bound to a thief; the very first niwa ancestor. but if you met him when he was only a (technical) newborn, he didn't have a lot of personality. he was quiet, steady, calm, very oblivious and just a little curious, the kind of bodiless voice to ask 'what's that?' every once in a while and to not say much. he didn't have the same intense gravitas or pronounced arrogance and pride, he hadn't quite devoted himself to thieving yet which is why so many years of his go unnoticed. the same puzzling confusion that daisuke often expresses also was dark's once upon a time before the manisumea incident and the first niwa's death. 'dark' wasn't 'dark' until those things happened, and for as much as he hates his own birth and wretched existence, the matter of the fact is he still genuinely loved the first niwa who acted as his mentor, his wiser 'other half' before dark ever even properly found himself and decided to carry on the og dark's legacy.

#*･ﾟ⊰ 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐒. ⊱ ✦ › OUT.#mmmm what'd i say before about dark being the ghost of daisuke's ancestor as the family curse #dark isn't the og but he's representative of the og as this metaphorical family inheritance & responsibility (“destiny”)#just as much as he's his own half-extant chara who happens to be imprisoned into his hosts #dark wants to be daisuke wants to be one with the niwa he loathes his name as the kokuyoku #he gets depressed over his lacking and excises himself for what he thinks is the sake of their happiness #when in reality daisuke's truest feelings are of wanting to be worthy of being dark too #whether or not that means excising himself for everyone else's including dark's sake #(snow queen ln + baku arc in the manga proves this all wrong; they both need each other)#oh i got distracted. point is i think about baby(tm) dark sometimes #well. he was born looking 16-17 but still #he had literally 0 idea what was going on. he was relaxed then manisumea happened and he stopped relaxing #first he learned love and desire without having names for it and then he learned Hate.
