As someone who read 1984 of my own free will and was obsessed with it back in high school this post absolutely hurts my soul.

#flashbacks to 15 year old me making Clown Cope fanfiction#where winston saying 'do it to julia' was part of a Grand Master Plan(TM)#to escape the ministry of truth#so they can join with the proles and make a revolution to overthrow big brother hunger games style#and then democracy is restored and everyone lives happily ever after#winston/julia was my tragic 'why did it have to end this way' otp for quite some time#in all seriousness I think they got away with this because people think 1984 isn't a book someone can... actually read on their own#they had to read it for school and thus only mugged up key passages therefore there's no way they could actually remember the dialogues#however anyone who read the book for fun can look at that passage and immediately identify it as fake#because big brother NEVER interacts with the heroes in the story
