From my actual blog (originally an essay) regarding the dangers of misdiagnosis among people with chronic pain:
According to the Mightys' research shown by msn. Com, many people with fibromyalgia are misdiagnosed initially (n.p). This is partially due to the misunderstandings, discrimination and wide range of symptoms that fibromyalgia transmits. However much of a difficulty it is I believe that the medical industries disregard for fibromyalgia is potentially dangerous and many times involves continuous gas lighting from medical professionals because of this I believe that doctors should better educate themselves on the truth and new research on fibromyalgia.
In order to understand why many may disregard fibromyalgia I’ll start by explaining what fibromyalgia is.Fibromyalgia is a fairly unclear medical condition. It’s not exactly known what causes the condition and whether it’s neurological or physical. Initially medical professionals believed it to be an almost mental condition that people with fibromyalgia thought they were in pain but in fact weren’t in pain. As medicine Improved it was thought that it is possibly both neurological and physiological, based on the symptoms it presents such as brain fog (also called fibro fog), widespread musculoskeletal pain and over a hundred other symptoms. To make matters worse fibromyalgia is different for every person who has it. It also has many related conditions that some have in addition to fibromyalgia. Some of those include but not limited to, lupus, multiple sclerosis and IV, I learned so much about fibromyalgia through years of research trying to understand the condition. The symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and can change from person to person this can make it hard for doctors to diagnose.
Typically these are also things that have overlapping symptoms of fibromyalgia. For some including me, fibromyalgia can present itself in childhood and be misread as pain amplification syndrome or even just growing pains. For me it was a lot of Balance issues, memory problems, and pain. Though my pain was not like it is today and I was told it was only growing pains. When I got into high school my junior year I went to an amusement park called wild waves, my brother who was young and very nervous asked me to ride the rollercoaster that was meant for small kids with him. I asked the attendant if it was okay and he even allowed other older people on the ride as well. We went around the ride and each of the four times it made the round my ribs slammed into the car. Hard. This caused instant and painful bruising. I went to see doctors and was assured it was only bruised and would heal in about six months. Well about five months later I got walking pneumonia and went to a respiratory specialist and a sports medicine doctor and later a physical therapist and a counselor for my mental health. Through this I was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and complex Post traumatic stress disorder. Even though these were my symptoms everyone has different ones and that means someone could have very different symptoms. Another thing that varies is that some like me have the major portions of fibromyalgia occur after a physical or emotional trauma. health seemed to take a weird turn.
Just as I began to think that my health couldn’t get any stranger, I was back in the hospital. I was trying to relax after a vacation to the beach and I then was poolside and swimming. I was still having every issue from the year before and I couldn’t help but try to find my own answers. Googling too try to find what I could be dealing with. I had come up with a couple of options based on my symptoms, one was fibromyalgia and the other was lupus. I noticed one day that I had a pea sized bump on my ankle. Thinking it was probably a mosquito bite I thought nothing of it. The next morning I was covered in hives we went to the ER and they told me it was just random hives, gave me Prednisone and discharged me by this point we realized it must be heat and stress related as when we reduced the heat and I stayed out of the sun and calm, my hives would go down a little bit. A day later I was completely swollen in my hands and feet, I couldn’t even hold a pencil or walk. I again went to the ER and they brushed it off and gave me more antihistamines and asked me to leave. The next day I went to the emergency room again for the third time. This time I had completely swollen lips, I couldn’t talk and my lips began to hurt. This time the ER nurse who had seen me all three days became worried. She had seen me all three days and realized I was getting worse and worse. She and the resident DR began to think that I had lupus, they sent me for tests and then referred me to a child’s rheumatologist since I was still under 18. Having a heat and stress rash is a less common symptom of fibromyalgia and when I mentioned it to doctors asking if that could be the cause they mostly dismissed it, however it’s common in lupus patients so doctors saw it as pretty obvious.
The rhumatologist I saw wasn’t too far from the hospital, I will call them when I arrived at Dr. B' s office I was very disoriented. Between being swollen and on Prednisone and the extreme pain I was completely out of it. She bent my swollen joints back, I understand that she was checking my joint flexibility however she was very forceful and disregarded the pain I was in. She then got very frustrated with me when I was feeling disoriented. Even looking back on this memory is really foggy because I was so out of it it’s almost like looking through a bubble, like it’s not me. We then talked about my blood test results. I was so ready to have a actual diagnosis however when she told me my results were clear I began to cry, it happened to be after I was told it wasn’t lupus. She turned to me and said “why are you crying, you don’t want lupus anyway”. My mom tried explaining that I was frustrated about lack of results. Dr. B talked to my grandma about fibromyalgia, which my grandma has and Dr. B told us that I probably have it however she’d loose her license if she diagnosed someone my age with fibromyalgia. She instead said I have hypermobility and pain amplification syndrome. I was given no treatment and told to wear knee braces, get expensive shoe inserts and exercise she told us pain amplification syndrome is the children version of fibromyalgia, and us not knowing any different went along with it. In all actuality pain amplification syndrome is a condition that affects children essentially it’s having low pain tolerance and encourages using only exercise to make the pain tolerance higher. It is nothing like fibromyalgia. My reaction after was incredibly dissatisfied, I told my mom I was frustrated with her and that I didn’t feel like she was right. Now that I look back on it it’s so frustrating and upsetting, she had the perfect opportunity to help a kid who was in a lot of pain and instead she chose to tell them all they need is exercise and shoe inserts.
So why is this a problem and why was I treated in this way? Well it’s a problem that people are often misdiagnosed because as I already stated being in pain chronically and having it go untreated because of misdiagnosis is potentially dangerous. According to a pain management
site called practical pain management states that they’ve seen an increase of death among people that have chronic pain that’s untreated (Tennant n.p ).What happens is that we have so much pain that is coursing through our body and people who are at risk can end up having sudden cardiac arrest. This condition is incredibly terrifying yet also extremely important to talk about yet this week is the first time I’ve ever heard of it. Aside from the medical issues this also causes psychological problems from being told you don’t have a condition or that the pain is in your head then it makes people feel like their pain is invalid. So why was I treated in this way and misdiagnosed? My age is a major factor. I was young seventeen almost eighteen and this causes controversies, it’s pretty difficult for people, both doctor and civilian alike, to understand that you can be any age and be in pain or sick unfortunately to me it seems to be similar regardless of education. It makes sense if we think about if we can even blame civilians for not knowing if doctors seem to think similar. Which means typically I get questions like “isn’t that something on older people get?” Or comments like “you don’t have that you’re too young to be in pain”. Then I have to explain that anyone can be in pain chronically. I believe that it’s really hard to look at children or young adults and believe that they may not be healthy because it’s something that’s not extremely common in communities. Another factor is that most doctors still believe that fibromyalgia isn’t real. According to pubmed they discuss how many doctors often dismiss and refuse to believe the condition is real. Especially older doctors I’ve realized have a more difficult time with the idea that this is a valid condition.
I also believe another issue is that most women are often not taken seriously for their pain. This is often shown in many places and in so many woman’s personal stories and its very important to realize that this is also often why women begin to avoid going to doctors. This can be really dangerous for the women because leaving pain untreated can be really dangerous. Some of the accounts of things that women had endured regarding having their pain disregarded are written in Dr. Amy Millers post on practical pain management where she explores the different ways women’s pain is disregarded and how this can even effect if doctors look for adequate treatments for their illnesses.
The last reason I believe I was treated like I was is my weight. It’s strange to say but this was not the first now last time I was shamed by my weight and told I’d be just fine if I were to exercise more. I’ve even been told by family that my condition is due to my weight. Unfortunately this isn’t uncommon for others in the fibromyalgia community many of the other people I talk to have similar stories of people who believe they’re helping but really theyre
hurting us by blaming weight as our only issue. My main argument against the idea that my condition is due to my weight is that before I ever got sick and even that entire junior year I was an active person, my sophomore year I was the top of my walking class even beating the athletes
in the class, I hiked all through sophomore and junior year and only gained weight after being on Prednisone twice. My most recent doctor has told me that my weight is not my doing and that my body still hasn’t worked out all the Prednisone which is why I’ve been unable to lose it.
I want people to learn from my story that fibromyalgia is real. It’s very real and pain is valid. Though pain may be different for all of us and fibromyalgia is different in most of us so you can’t tell if someone does or doesn’t have it. I also believe we need more and better research and medications, unfortunately the medical industry is still pretty uneven on what they believe which makes it hard to be properly diagnosed. I want people who are undiagnosed or feeling like they’re misdiagnosed to know that they should trust their instincts if something doesn’t feel right or like it’s working let your doctor know, and if you feel like the diagnosis is wrong, then it’s never a bad thing to get other opinions from other doctors and ask around to different groups on who they see and if they like them this is so helpful. I got my most recent doctor through my dad’s wife’s daughter who was having similar issues and he’s amazing so I definitely recommend getting other opinions. My last little thing I want people to understand is that what works for one person may not work for another, and exercise or that one special tea your great aunt’s brothers friend drinks to treat his fibromyalgia isn’t necessarily going to help someone else with fibromyalgia and actually can sometimes worsen their condition. being misdiagnosed are huge problems right now and I hope that more doctors will begin to be More open minded and take it upon themselves to fully understand the condition itself as we begin to see more research come out towards the issue.

What is an underbite? Causes, Treatments, and FAQs
An underbite can cause major problems if left untreated. This bite problem can affect everything from self esteem to sleep quality.
So, what causes an underbite, how do we spot it in children and adults, and what can be done to treat it?
What is an underbite?
An underbite is a type of bite misalignment, also referred to as mandibular prognathism or a Class III malocclusion.
This diagnosis refers to when the bottom teeth and lower jaw extend out beyond the upper teeth when the mouth is closed.
In moderate to severe cases of prognathism, the face can take on a bulldog-like look due to the protrusion of the bottom jaw bone.
Beyond appearances, this is one of “the most severe” conditions that can occur in the jaw, teeth, and face. The protruding jaw is not just a cosmetic concern, but a potential threat to the patient’s dental health. In fact, it can cause many serious issues if left untreated.
Due to the myriad of possible complications, underbite correction is crucial.
Causes of Underbite
An underbite can be caused by a number of factors, including genetic makeup, environmental factors, or other illnesses:
Genetic factors, like the famous Hapsburg jaw
The upper jaw is aligned too far forward, or the lower jaw is aligned too far back
The upper teeth are tipped backwards, the lower teeth are slanted forward, or the teeth are overcrowded
Thumb sucking, pacifier overuse, mouth breathing, or tongue thrusting, which can shift the teeth
A broken jawbone that has healed improperly
Cleft lip or palate
Inherited conditions, like Treacher Collins syndrome or nevoid basal cell carcinoma
Underbite Complications and Symptoms
Thankfully, an underbite is typically not a difficult condition to spot. Both its conditions and symptoms are usually clear and easy for a dentist to spot, even in younger children.
If you or your little one are experiencing any of the following, let your dental care provider know.
The symptoms of an underbite are, in part, determined by the severity of the malocclusion.
Perhaps the most commonly noticed is a visible protrusion of the lower jaw beyond the upper front teeth. Noticing overcrowding in the teeth and an aching jaw is also very common.
The mouth breathing mentioned above, and even low quality sleep, can also be indicators that something is amiss.
There are many difficulties that can come with an underbite, many ranging beyond the mouth. Here are some of the most common effects:
Speech difficulties
Pain in the jaw or mouth
Frequent headaches
TMJ/TMD
Ear discomfort or dysfunction
Stomach issues
Sleep apnea
Bruxism
Hypertension
How to Treat an Underbite (5 Procedures + Costs)
If you or your loved one suffers from an underbite, you have several factors in your treatment options.
Your insurance will want to know if this is cosmetic dentistry or a necessary procedure for your oral health, which may determine how much they pay.
Pricing for dental work also depends on your location and the dentist you choose.
The severity of your underbite can also affect what sort of treatment you need—more severe cases may require more invasive methods.
If your child has a “pseudo” class III underbite, meaning lower teeth are ahead of the upper but jaw sizes are appropriate, braces/Invisalign and extractions may be an option. However, if an underbite is caused by skeletal issues, surgery will be the only choice.
1. Braces/Invisalign
Once an underbite is detected, you will need a treatment plan to realign your jaw and align your teeth. In milder cases, your underbite may be correctable with orthodontic treatment alone.
I am a fan of Invisalign (or other clear retainers) when it’s an option, as it creates less calcifications and uses safe ingredients that are free of BPAs and carcinogens.
Usually, this option won’t work for children. I’ve successfully used Invisalign on class III underbites, but it required tooth extractions. Metal braces are generally the go-to method for kids.
Before or in place of braces, your orthodontist may recommend specialized headgear. A reverse-pull face mask uses metal bands attached to the upper back teeth and wraps around the head to pull the jaw into place.
An upper jaw expander involves fixing a plastic and wire device to the roof of the mouth, expanded by turning a key daily. Over the course of roughly a year, the palate expands to correct the bite.
Typically, medically necessary braces can be partially covered by dental insurance.
Between x-rays, appointments, and the gear needed, braces can run between $2,000-$7,000, with dental insurance caps generally covering around $1,500.
For more information, check out my comprehensive guide to braces.
2. Tooth Extraction
Overcrowding in the teeth can create an underbite, particularly in the upper or lower front teeth.
In some cases, a tooth extraction may be necessary to relieve the pressure this causes and aid the jaw in relaxing into its natural position. This may be all that’s required, but in other situations, this is a first step prior to braces or other treatment options.
The cost to extract one tooth can range from $75-$300, often partially covered by insurance.
3. Tooth Reshaping
In cases where the teeth do not fit in the mouth properly, tooth reshaping is a cosmetic dentistry option.
In this treatment, the bottom teeth will be shaved down and reshaped slightly, and veneers fitted to the upper teeth. This can realign how the jaw fits together, and is appropriate for some mild cases of underbite.
Some benefits of tooth reshaping are that it’s relatively painless, since it only alters tooth enamel, and lowers the incidence of tooth decay.
Tooth reshaping typically costs between $50-$300 per tooth.
4. Surgery
For severe underbite or older patients, jaw surgery (also referred to as orthognathic surgery) can be necessary. This typically is recommended in conjunction with orthodontic treatment.
Jaw surgery can realign the position of your upper and lower jaw, and create proper bite patterns in extreme cases of prognathism.
Each surgery is different and tailored to the patient, but the typical recovery time can range between ten and 12 weeks.
With no insurance, jaw surgery can range from $20,000-$40,000. However, with insurance, the cap of what you’ll pay often lands under $5,000.
Unlike many other types of dental treatments, this type of surgery is typically covered by medical insurance.
5. “Facelift” Dentistry
“Facelift” dentistry aims to correct bite problems using their specialized JawTrac and VENLAY technology—designed to prevent the need for braces and jaw surgery.
This dentistry, available only to adult patients, claims the ability to correct underbites in as little as three weeks by harnessing electronic jaw tracking readings. These are based on the projected natural position of the jaw without having been shifted by malocclusion.
Pricing for “Facelift” dentistry varies by patient, but starts around $35,000.
Since this is newer technology, the insurance coverage for this procedure varies by provider.
Differences Between Underbite and Overbite
In proper alignment, when the mouth is closed, the top front teeth extend very slightly over the lower teeth and jaw.
Extreme cases of this are another type of malocclusion, called an overbite. An underbite creates the opposite effect when the mouth closes, pushing the lower jaw and teeth to the front.
Both an underbite and an overbite can make patients self-conscious, causing issues with breathing, chewing, and speaking.
However, the difference is simple: an overbite looks like the upper jaw and teeth are too far forward, and an underbite presents as a protruding lower jaw and teeth.
Underbite Statistics
Estimates for underbite prevalence claim they occur in 5-10% of the population.
One global study took a closer look at the incidence in different nations. The U.S. has a 5% incidence, while China has a whopping 15% of the population with an underbite—perhaps due to genetics.
FAQs
Q:
What’s the best age to treat underbite?
A: The short answer is: as early as possible. As soon as you notice an underbite developing in your child, consult your dentist. This early intervention may prevent the need for orthodontics or surgery. I tell my patients that beginning treatment by the age of five can make all the difference!
Otherwise, traditional underbite treatment can be most effective between ages 5-10.
Q:
Can I get my underbite fixed even though I’m an adult?
A: It’s never too late to treat an underbite, and can reverse many of the painful and embarrassing complications even later in life. Treatment in adults has proven successful in many cases.
Q:
Does an underbite make me ugly?
A: While an underbite can be stigmatized due to its rarity, the only ugly thing is a judgmental attitude towards others’ appearances.
However, studies show that self-esteem can increase after treatment for prognathism, especially in women.
Q:
Should I get my underbite fixed even if I don’t think it’s causing problems?
A: My answer is a loud and enthusiastic yes!
All you need to do is look at the complications list above to see that an underbite often leads to major problems all throughout the body, from headaches to indigestion. This is more than a cosmetic procedure– your oral health affects your overall wellness and quality of life.
Q:
How will my appearance change after having an underbite corrected?
A: Facial structures vary a lot from person to person, but check out these incredible before-and-after pictures of corrected underbites.

Confessions of A Pharmacophobe: Why I’m Afraid of Drugs
What is Pharmacophobia?
As you may have guessed, pharmacophobia is the fear of drugs, but it actually extends much farther than that. Many folks, that experience some type of fear in relation to drugs, also experience a more targeted fear regarding pharmaceutical drugs as well as developing an addiction to them.
Of course, every person is different and can experience varied versions of pharmacophobia. Some may be afraid of medication, or hallucinogenic drugs, intravenous drugs, or even the common vaccinations specifically. In any case, very little information exists about this fear, which is why it is so important to bring this issue, and adjoining issues, into the light.
Why is pharmacophobia a problem?
Right about now you might be thinking “being afraid of drugs isn’t a bad thing” and you’d be partially correct. However, if we examine this phobia from a psychological perspective, it could potentially be harmful to someone’s life.
Untreated mental illnesses, including fears, can grow into incapacitating obstacles in a person’s life. Often times, the illness starts as one small problem then evolves into a gargantuan issue that is impeding the affected individual’s ability to live a healthy life.
For example, someone with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) may have a fear of germs. This may start as a handwashing obsession that eventually begins to creep into other areas of that person’s life. Maybe they start becoming obsessive about germs in their house, on their clothes or shoes, where their food is cooked, etc. You can see where something as harmless as washing your hands can possibly stop someone from living a fulfilled and healthy life.
This can also affect those with other mental health conditions aside from their phobias. Someone may be suffering from pharmacophobia as well as anxiety, depression, or other common mental health problems. It may be quite difficult for someone with pharmacophobia to receive medical treatment for such a condition when they happen to be terrified of developing a dependency on their medication.
Of course, many may go through their lives never needing treatment. Some pharmacophobes may remain in control over their fear and it may never develop into a larger issue. Yet, as is the case with millions of untreated mental health cases each year, many can result in constant stress, anxiety, and seclusion from a world where drugs are a part of our everyday lives.
How does someone develop a fear of drugs?
When I was about 8 years old, my mother developed a debilitating addiction to meth. She was trapped by this sickness, unable to escape for roughly 6 years. Eventually, she was arrested, sent to prison, and it was there that she committed to getting clean and sober.
I cannot speak for her and what she went through during those years, but I can speak for myself. Seeing my mother wither away before my very eyes was shocking to say the least. Watching someone so close to you, that you love so much, destroy their life and their body is simply horrifying. What I do know is, my mother was actually quite lucky to receive help when she did. Naturally, drug addiction in any form is risky, but extended use for months and even years is akin to playing a game of russian roulette.
Meth is particularly addictive and harshly degenerative on the body. You may have seen photos of those who have been using for only a few short months that look like tenured drug users on their last leg.
As a result, I have been afraid of drugs for as long as I can remember. For me, pharmacophobia mainly exists within “recreational” drugs instead of medicinal drugs. However, I do have a fear of medication, specifically addictive pain, anxiety, and depression meds. I definitely don’t have an issue with taking things like aspirin, allergy medication, cold medicine, etc. I recognize that if I ever saw myself in a situation where I was in need of medical attention, I might need to take the medication in order to restore my health, but of course I would prefer not to.
Fear of What A Prescription Means
Aside from the possibility of traumatic experiences with drugs, some pharmacophobes also develop their fear due to a perceived lack of control. Not being in control of the mind or body can be a seriously frightening scenario for some.
It’s easy to see why someone could develop a fear of drugs or addiction, given the current state prescription addiction in the United States. In a study done by the American Society of Addiction Medication, they reported over 47,055 drug related deaths in 2014 alone. Although 60% of these deaths were due to overdose by heroin or painkillers, the remaining 40% were due to the abuse of prescription medications, like highly accessible antidepressants or antianxiety medication.
What’s more, many others are afraid of the side affects that come along with medications. Possible blood clots, heart problems, liver failure, and even cancer can result from extended use of many prescription medications. These are hard facts to live with in a world where just about everything, even aspirin, has possible side effects listed on the bottle.
Lastly, societal stigmas and misinformation lead to shame amongst sufferers of mental illnesses and fears. Millions of Americans are so ashamed to admit their dependency on medication to help them live a peaceful life and heal over time. So, many choose to avoid this situation altogether due to a fear of failure. They become afraid of seeking help via medication because they believe this means they have failed as a human being.
Everyone deserves to be safe, healthy, and happy.
Understanding and controlling my pharmacophobia has been a journey for me and I realize that I may carry this fear for the rest of my life. Although, I too try to remember that asking for help does not result in my failure, quite the contrary actually. Seeking counseling or therapy is nothing to be ashamed of and should be used as a constant resource for those who feel that their mental health is negatively affecting their quality of life or the lives of those around them.

Transformation Tuesday! 🙌 #stunning Underbites can change the shape of the whole face. A severe case, like this one, can distort features and make the chin look like it is sticking out. Orthodontics is more than just straightening up the teeth! Bite abnormalities occur in almost all of our patients. Most are easily corrected without surgery. Putting teeth in their proper place for the best occlusion is what we do!! 😍 #orthodontics #braces #occlusion #healthybite #underbite #beforeandafter #newsmile #bracesoff #nicesmile #teenbraces #odonto #orthodontist #smilemakeover #dentalcase #underbitecorrection #loveyoursmile #transformation #transformationtuesday #smikesbyspokane

Key Takeaways: Underbite
An underbite, when the lower jaw extends farther out than the upper, is a serious dental concern that should never be left untreated.
Causes of an underbite can range from environmental factors like thumb sucking to the individual’s genetic makeup. Common treatment options include braces/Invisalign, extraction, tooth reshaping, surgery, and “facelift” dentistry.
Though early intervention is better, there’s no wrong time to begin underbite treatment to regain your self-esteem and health.
