@astranite, ah, yes, ‘Runaway’! I can generally turn off my ‘train-brain’ for any train episodes – unless of course our hero or villain is train surfing, traps the opposition on a carriage, and kicks at the coupler to separate the carriage from the engine, and speeds off into the sunset to await round 2. Then the entire neighbourhood has to endure me yelling general abuse, and "Couplers don’t work like that!"
While mag-levs are strictly outside my area of expertise, they do share a lot of infrastructure details and safety features with current diesel-electric, and electric trains, and when you take those into consideration, well, let’s just say the set up shown on screen is, um, lacking.
Brains, John and Virgil should all be having very strong words with the Japanese Rail Network.
First point is: why on god’s green earth are they testing a new locomotive design on a live line?! Especially one that operates passenger services? Even if it is a locomotive undergoing a post-overhaul mainline test, there should have at least been a qualified mechanic on board to test-ride it’s performance. Away from passenger trains.
Second problem: and speaking of the track, it’s all one track, one rail, so how do trains going on opposite directions pass each other? At the very least there should be what’s called ‘crossing loops’: a short section of track that forks off and then runs parallel to the main line, before rejoining it. One train goes into the loop, and pulls up, while the other train passes on the main line. If the crossing loop is long enough the train might not need to stop – this type of setup is more common in the United States than it is in Australia – we get to stop and stretch our legs.
Many crossing loops in my area are being upgraded to include catch points. These are a set of points (which is the junction where a train can change tracks, they can also be called ‘switches’, but the standard term here is ‘points’, so that’s what I’m sticking with) linked to the points on the mainline which are intended to prevent a train rejoining the main line without permission from the controller. Instead, the lead engine will be directed off the tracks to loose forward momentum in a specially constructed section of ballast (rocks, preferably granite, about the size of your fist). A mag-lev train would be able to be shunted to a de-energised section of track, and allowed to shed its momentum safely there. (There should be friction locks that deploy when power is lost, like in an elevator car – ‘it would be like hitting a brick wall’, eh, not so much, Brains.)
Third Problem: And this is the biggie! All modern locomotives have a safety system in place designed to prevent the driver falling asleep on the job. In Australia it is currently called the “Driver Vigilance System”, or ‘vigi’. Its job is to safely stop the train before it is stopped, should the driver fall asleep or be … otherwise incapacitated.
The technology has gone through a few iterations, the oldest being the ‘Dead Man’s Switch’, a footplate that drivers had to hold down while the train was in motion. Unfortunately, due to the fact that drivers can be on a train for up to 12 hours, and it required a degree of force to hold down, drivers were prone to wedging the footplate down with their lunch box, or an emergency flag. Sadly, the system was shown to be entirely ineffective on 31 January 2003 when the driver of the Tangara G7 passenger train suffered a heart attack enroute and slumped with his weight on the deadman’s switch, allowing the passenger train to enter a curve rated for 60km/h at 117km/h. It derailed, killing seven (including the driver), and injuring 40 people. It is commonly referred to as the Waterfall Train Disaster.
The current system has a light illuminated for 10sec, which then flashes for 7 sec, then a 5 sec high pitched beeping, if the ‘vigi’ button is not pressed in that time, the train brakes will deploy automatically, while simultaneously putting in an emergency call to the network controller. If the train crew doesn’t respond to the controller answering the call, emergency procedures are brought into play, and emergency services are sent to the train’s GPS location. (And if you weren’t incapacitated, you would wish you were.)
All the hapless engineer in ‘Runaway’ would have had to do was … not press the button.
And the thing that makes me laugh? John being able to reset the points the ‘instant’ that the passenger train clears the points. For safety’s sake, points are locked in position until the system detects the rail traffic has cleared a set point at a safe distance, and even then, there is ‘time out’ period between clearance, and points unlocking, and then a 120 second ‘time out’ between the points registering as being locked into position, and the signal clearing.
But hey, technology changes. Maybe they ‘improved’ the points system? Although their cyber security is seriously lacking ….
But it looks good on screen, and I don't suppose the series' target demographic really has a whole lot of practical experience in rail operations.

How to Do a Load Bank Test on a Generator?|EMAX Load Bank
Generators are critical assets for businesses and homes, providing essential backup power during outages. To ensure that a generator will perform as needed during an emergency, it is crucial to conduct regular maintenance and testing. One of the most effective ways to test a generator's performance is through a load bank test. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps of performing a load bank test on a generator, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
Tumblr media
What is a Load Bank Test?
A load bank test involves using a device known as a load bank to simulate electrical loads that the generator might encounter during operation. The test ensures the generator can handle its full rated capacity and helps identify any issues that could affect performance. Load bank tests are essential for maintaining the health of standby generators, ensuring they can provide reliable power when needed.
Tumblr media
Why Perform a Load Bank Test?
Performing a load bank test has several benefits:
Verification of Performance: Ensures the generator can handle its maximum load without issues.
Identifying Potential Problems: Helps detect issues like wet stacking in diesel generators, which occurs when the engine doesn't reach optimal temperature.
Improved Reliability: Regular testing ensures the generator is reliable and ready for emergencies.
Compliance with Regulations: Some industries require regular load testing to comply with safety and operational regulations.
Tumblr media
Types of Load Bank Tests
There are three primary types of load bank tests:
Resistive Load Bank Test: Simulates real-world loads such as lighting and heating. It is the most common type of test.
Reactive Load Bank Test: Simulates loads that include inductive (motors, transformers) and capacitive (capacitors) components.
Combined Load Bank Test: Uses both resistive and reactive loads to simulate the most realistic operating conditions.
Tumblr media
Preparation for Load Bank Testing
Before performing a load bank test, follow these preparatory steps:
1. Review Manufacturer Guidelines
Consult the generator’s manual for specific instructions and safety precautions related to load bank testing. Adhering to manufacturer guidelines is crucial to avoid voiding warranties or causing damage.
2. Inspect the Generator
Conduct a thorough visual inspection of the generator. Look for any signs of wear, leaks, or damage. Ensure that the fuel, oil, and coolant levels are adequate and that all connections are secure.
3. Ensure Adequate Ventilation
Load testing generates a significant amount of heat. Ensure that the testing area is well-ventilated to dissipate heat and prevent overheating.
4. Gather Necessary Equipment
Ensure you have the following equipment ready:
Load bank unit
Load cables
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Monitoring devices (e.g., multimeters, temperature sensors)
Tumblr media
Step-by-Step Guide to Performing a Load Bank Test
Step 1: Connect the Load Bank to the Generator
Safety First: Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves and safety glasses.
Shut Down the Generator: Ensure the generator is turned off before making any connections.
Connect Cables: Attach the load bank cables to the generator’s output terminals. Ensure that the connections are secure to prevent arcing or loose connections.
Verify Connections: Double-check all connections to ensure they are tight and correctly aligned.
Step 2: Start the Generator
Start-Up: Follow the standard procedure to start the generator.
Warm-Up Period: Allow the generator to run for a few minutes to reach its normal operating temperature. This helps in accurate load testing.
Step 3: Gradually Apply Load
Incremental Load: Begin by applying a small load incrementally using the load bank. This gradual increase helps prevent sudden surges that could damage the generator.
Monitor Parameters: As you increase the load, continuously monitor the generator’s parameters, such as voltage, current, frequency, and temperature.
Stabilize Each Load Level: Allow the generator to stabilize at each load level for a few minutes. This helps in identifying any potential issues early.
Step 4: Apply Full Load
Full Load Application: Once the generator has stabilized at incremental loads, apply the full rated load. This step is crucial as it tests the generator’s ability to handle its maximum capacity.
Continuous Monitoring: Keep monitoring all critical parameters. Look for any signs of overheating, abnormal vibrations, or unusual noises.
Step 5: Maintain Full Load
Duration: Maintain the full load for a specified duration, typically around 30 minutes to an hour. This duration helps in identifying any long-term issues.
Document Readings: Record all readings and observations during the test. This documentation is valuable for future reference and maintenance planning.
Step 6: Gradually Reduce Load
Incremental Reduction: Gradually reduce the load in small increments until the generator is running without any load.
Cooldown Period: Allow the generator to run without load for a few minutes to cool down gradually.
Step 7: Shut Down and Disconnect
Shutdown Procedure: Follow the standard shutdown procedure for the generator.
Disconnect Cables: Safely disconnect the load bank cables from the generator. Ensure that all connections are secure and the generator is back to its standby mode.
Tumblr media
Post-Test Analysis and Maintenance
Review Test Data
Analyze the data collected during the test. Look for any anomalies or deviations from normal operating parameters. Identifying trends or issues early can prevent major problems later.
Inspect Generator
Conduct a post-test inspection of the generator. Look for any signs of stress or damage caused by the load test. Check for leaks, unusual wear, or any other abnormalities.
Perform Necessary Maintenance
Based on the test results and inspection, perform any necessary maintenance. This may include changing filters, topping off fluids, tightening connections, or addressing any identified issues.
Update Maintenance Records
Keep detailed records of the load bank test, including all readings, observations, and maintenance actions taken. This information is crucial for tracking the generator’s performance over time and planning future maintenance.
Tumblr media
Safety Considerations
Safety is paramount when performing a load bank test. Here are some key safety considerations:
Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Always adhere to the generator and load bank manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Use PPE: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
Secure Connections: Ensure all electrical connections are secure and correctly made to prevent electrical hazards.
Monitor Continuously: Never leave the generator unattended during the test. Continuous monitoring is essential to identify and address issues promptly.
Adequate Ventilation: Ensure the testing area is well-ventilated to dissipate heat generated during the test.
Conclusion
A load bank test is an essential part of generator maintenance, ensuring that your generator is capable of handling its full rated capacity and ready to provide reliable backup power during emergencies. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can perform a load bank test safely and effectively. Regular testing, combined with routine maintenance, will help extend the life of your generator and ensure its reliability when you need it most.
Maintaining detailed records of each load bank test, addressing any identified issues promptly, and adhering to safety protocols will contribute to the long-term performance and reliability of your generator. By investing time and effort into regular load bank testing, you can have peace of mind knowing that your generator is ready to perform at its best when it matters most.

There's a developing story in german railroads that I need to share with you all because it has become a meme at this point. It concerns this type of vehicle:
Tumblr media
Source: Falk2 on Wikimedia commons, CC-BY-SA
This is the class 711.1 overhead line maintenance car, one of several different types of similar vehicles. It is designed to fix any problems that may develop with the overhead lines. It's diesel-powered, obviously, and it has a big workshop on the inside full of all sorts of copper equipment, and on the top, a special pantograph for checking wire alignment and a working platform from where you can actually touch and work on the wires.
The official nickname for them when they were introduced was Hubarbeitsbühnen-Instandhaltungsfahrzeug für Oberleitungsanlagen (lift working platform maintenance vehicle for overhead line equipment), or in short HIOB, the german spelling of the biblical Job, which was definitely not a bad omen at all.
22 of these were built between 2002 and 2004, and they (as well as other similar vehicles) are stationed all over Germany to react quickly to any issues with overhead lines, as well as do various forms of regular checks and maintenance. The 711.1 is special, though: It keeps catching on fire.
Tumblr media
Picture by fire brigade Bienenbüttel, found at https://www.az-online.de/uelzen/bienenbuettel/flammen-bahn-1605363.html
The first one burned down in 2012. Nobody got hurt (in any of the following incidents), and it was treated like a freak accident. Specifically, the investigation revealed that it's related to how the train functions. Normally, for a diesel train, you either have a direct mechanical connection from the motor to the driven wheels (sometimes including something like the torque converter in an automatic gearbox), or sometimes the diesel engine drives an electric generator and electric motors at the wheels drive the train. This, on the other hand, has a hydrostatic transmission: The main engine drives a pump that creates pressure in an oil system, and this high-pressure oil is then used in motors at the wheels to drive the train.
The good thing about this arrangement is that the train can run both fast (up to 160 km/h or 100 mph) to quickly reach the place where it's needed, but also really slowly, walking pace or slower, so someone standing on the roof working platform can check every part of the wires carefully.
The bad thing about this arrangement is that the oil in the system is flammable. If there's a leak, it sprays out, and if that spray hits something hot, it can ignite. That's what happened here. Okay, gotta do better maintenance, alright.
Then it happened again, in July 2020.
Tumblr media
Source: German Federal Police, via official accident investigation report
The cause was pretty much the same, but the effect was much more noticeable. The train was underway on a training run when it came to a stop for no clear reason. The staff activated the parking brake, got out, and noticed that their train was on fire. As they were calling firefighters, however, the train suddenly started to move. The engineer actually climbed back on board and tried to activate every braking system the train had, and it had a lot of them; this one was specifically equipped for more mountainous railway lines. But none of it worked, and the engineer jumped back out at still low speeds (no reported injuries).
It kept rolling downhill for 22 kilometres (about 14 miles). Station staff tried to stop it by putting signals on red and hoping for the automatic train control system to stop it, but train control systems can't do anything if there are no brakes. Others tried to put wheel chocks on the rails, but those are for parked trains, fast trains will just throw them to the say. So on it went, burning more and more. In the end the railway decided to find a nice save spot where nothing important was around and firefighters would have easy access, and let it derail there. That's what the picture above shows.
What happened? Well, the same as before, but this time with an additional twist. The fire had destroyed all normal braking systems. It hadn't destroyed the parking brake, but on this train, the parking brake is electrically controlled. You don't need to electricity for it to stay active, but you need it to activate or deactivate it. The fire had already destroyed the relevant electrical lines when the engineer thought they activated the parking brake.
Two trains of the same type burning down for the same reason is scary and warrants action, even if it's eight years apart, and the accident investigation report lists a number of steps already taken and others that were planned, like more checks for leaks, new procedures for leaving the train so it doesn't roll away, perhaps changing some equipment out.
And it seems to me personally that these changes had an effect. Of sorts.
youtube
You can ignore the narration (which consistently calls it an engine even though it's a rail car), just admire these pictures of a driverless burning train coming towards you. Yes, in January 2023, another of these trains caught fire, it rolled away again, and got derailed on purpose again. We don't have an official accident investigation report yet, so who knows what happened here, but, like, it's not exactly hard to make a guess.
Just to really hammer the point home, let's go to February 2023, just a month later, and this time we see the same thing in Dresden.
Tumblr media
Picture: Credited to "Firefighters", from https://bahnblogstelle.com/198726/erneut-brand-von-instandhaltungsfahrzeug-diesmal-in-dresden/
This time it didn't run away! My understanding is that the train drivers, well aware of the history of this type, placed wheel chocks in front of the wheels before it had the chance to do anything crazy.
Which brings us to last month. You won't believe what happened June 13th, 2024:
Tumblr media
Picture: Firefighters Haan, via https://rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/haan/triebwagen-brennt-auf-der-bahnstrecke-gruiten-hochdahl_aid-114420335
So as the Wikipedia infobox helpfully says,
Tumblr media
that's five out of 22 burned down. I gotta say, if your train's Wikipedia article has a "train burned down" counter and a section of fires that's nearly a third of the whole article, that's an issue.
(Ironically, it is actually not the most-burned-down german train by percentage. That dubious honour goes to the MaK DE 1024, an experimental heavy diesel locomotive. Three were built, two of them burned down eventually. The sole survivor was, in the numbering scheme of its last and longest owner, number 13.)
As of right now, DB has decided that these trains can't be trusted with engines, so for now they will all have to be pulled by locomotives. To me that sounds like it should fix the issue, for some value of "fix".
It's definitely notable that during the first 18 years of this type's use, they suffered two fires, and after they implemented all sorts of fixes after the second, three more burned down in just four years. I don't want to say the fixes made it worse, maybe it's just age starting to show, but it doesn't seem to have helped any.
Anyway, I hope that they either manage to fix or replace these trains before more burn down, but I have to admit that it's also very funny to open social media (mostly Bluesky for me these days, I haven't yet decided on a Mastodon server) and see the rail bubble shout because yet another of these machines has burned down.

So, I've seen like nobody ever talked about the Trains in WoC. Thought maybe I'll shed some light on them too. These guys are way too underrated.
There aren't alot actually. I wanted to first talk and tell about these 4 trains:- Trev Diesel, Stephenson, Pramath and Muir
-> Trev Diesel:-
• His Bio:- Working for the Pacific Flyer Railroad, Trev Diesel has seen a lot of changes alongside his tracks. He's witnessed the coming of the North American Californian Interstate then the disappearance part of many of the small towns he somehow used to pass through, but he's still going strong. He still loves pulling a long haul across the North American desert at night throughout his outstanding railroad night shift journeys. It's so peaceful - just Trev, the full Luna moon, and the North American jackalopes. He has seen a lot in his time on the railroad, from the dawn of the North American Californian Interstate to the vanishing of tiny towns. Through it all, Trev chugs on strongly and loves nothing more than a nighttime trip across the desert, beneath the full Luna moon - the well-known one thing in Trev's life that remains constant.
Tumblr media
-> Stephenson:-
His Bio:- Stephenson is a state-of-the-art bullet train. On paper, he runs twice daily, from Kent to London, but in reality, he's a British high-speed spy train, who scrambles switchboards, hops international rail lines, and can make it from Dover to Porto Corsa in five hours. He has no dining car and no spare compartment because he's filled with the finest in high-tech, classified spy gear and probably has a few secret agents aboard. So don't bother waiting for him at the station...
Tumblr media
-> Pramath:-
• His Bio:- Pramath joined the Kashmir Railway to get away from it all. More than anything' this train hoped to find a quiet, remote place to live, and trekking through the Himalayas seemed the perfect resolution. He found the quiet rides through the mountain tunnels of the Pir Panjal range peaceful and therapeutic; that is, until he nearly had a head-on collision with Dusty Crophopper.
Tumblr media
-> Muir:-
• His Bio:-The Piston Peak Railway transports millions of visitors to the Fusel Lodge every year. This is a huge job, and it takes a big engine; thankfully; Muir can handle the challenge. With enough coal, he can pull an astounding 18,000 tons of railcars behind him! With that much power, he'll be coming around the mountain just fine. It is known that he feels sensitive whenever a wildfire occurs, especially when burning trees fall and block his path.
Tumblr media
🚆Thoughts I had/Headcanons I made:-
• In Trev and Pramath's bio, notice that both of them enjoy being alone and love quiet and peaceful routes. Maybe most Trains tend to have this in common with one another. After all, trains getting chances to socialize is low due to them only being able to move on rails.
• Trains are very caring and polite generally. But when you meet an overworked and tired train, its best to avoid doing anything stupid. Especially freight trains lmao, best to avoid them since they would be sleep derived most of the times.
• From not getting the proper sleep required for one to being overworked no matter what weather or circumstance. These guys are probably (one of) the most hard working vehicles in WoC, and they don't have a choice but to do what they are meant to.
• As a train, you really have limited options for, well, everything. Not much different from how much a ship has either honestly.
↳ But I'm sure trains wouldn't have stayed quiet. So maybe new facilities for them were introduced over time too.
• Trains are indeed very observant. They are pretty much attentive to every small detail around them in any matter.
• They are pretty much good in solving their own problems (since asking help is pretty difficult in most situations, i think this would be developed by most[?])
• They tend to easily adapt to one area.
• "What's sleep?" - said every frieght train (or those on tight schedules)
• Wants something? Literally works their ass off without thinking of asking anyone.
- i guess that's all my head is able to think of--

The Importance of Fuel Quality for Your Car
Fuel is an essential component of any car, and the quality of the fuel you use can have a significant impact on the performance and longevity of your vehicle. In this blog, we'll explore why fuel quality is so important and offer some tips for choosing the right fuel for your car.
What is Fuel?
Fuel is a substance that is used to power a car's engine. The most common type of fuel used in cars is gasoline, but diesel, electric, and hybrid engines also exist. Gasoline is a petroleum-based fuel that is made up of a mixture of hydrocarbons, which are organic compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms.
The Importance of Fuel Quality
Fuel quality is essential for the optimal performance of your car. Poor quality fuel can lead to engine damage, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. In contrast, high-quality fuel can help improve your car's performance, reduce emissions, and increase its lifespan.
Here are some reasons why fuel quality is so important:
Engine Performance: The quality of fuel you use can have a significant impact on your car's engine performance. Poor quality fuel can cause engine knocking, which can damage your engine over time. High-quality fuel, on the other hand, can improve engine performance and help your car run more smoothly.
Fuel Efficiency: The quality of fuel you use can also affect your car's fuel efficiency. Poor quality fuel can cause your car to consume more fuel than necessary, leading to increased costs and reduced fuel economy. High-quality fuel, however, can help your car operate more efficiently and save you money on fuel costs in the long run.
Emissions: Poor quality fuel can also contribute to increased emissions from your car. These emissions can be harmful to the environment and can even cause health problems for humans and animals. Using high-quality fuel can help reduce emissions from your car and protect the environment.
Tips for Choosing the Right Fuel
Choosing the right fuel for your car is essential for optimal performance and longevity. Here are some tips for selecting the right fuel:
Follow the Manufacturer's Recommendations: Always refer to your car's owner's manual to determine the recommended fuel type and octane rating. Using the wrong type of fuel can damage your engine and reduce performance.
Choose a Reputable Fuel Brand: Stick with well-known and reputable fuel brands to ensure that you are getting high-quality fuel for your car.
Avoid Low-Quality Fuel: Cheap fuel may seem like a good deal, but it can actually be harmful to your car. Low-quality fuel can contain impurities and additives that can damage your engine over time.
Conclusion
Fuel quality is essential for the optimal performance of your car. Using high-quality fuel can improve engine performance, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions. To ensure that you are getting the best fuel for your car, follow the manufacturer's recommendations, choose a reputable fuel brand, and avoid low-quality fuel. By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your car runs smoothly and efficiently for years to come.

So…how exactly do trains function in terms of what drives them? I heard that electrical power is common these days, cut that many forms of power exist for them. Plus, that’s just what drives them forwards, not what works on the inside, like the organs of a living being. If you still can’t recall the full details, that’s fine. You are working on readjusting to your home, after all.
On a different note, have you heard of what’s happening in the Paldea region? Namely, the Paradox Pokemon in the Great Crater of Paldea, in what’s considered Area Zero. They’re unusual given how they’re basically walking the fine line between normal Pokemon and Ultra Beasts, with implications of being temporarily displaced, further than you were or now Arezu currently is…
I have been extensively reading about trains since my return, so I am more than capable of and happy to answer this question! The answer is that it depends on the type of train. Those used in Gear Station are indeed powered by electricity, which is supplied from what is called the third rail. This power is what allows the train to move- it powers the motors and allows the wheels to move! Without getting overly technical, just know that the electricity provides the necessary energy to cause the motor to move.
There are other forms, of course- diesel engines and steam powered trains exist, and indeed, steam powered trains would have existed in the time period you came from, just in other regions!
I have not heard this news about Paldea, no. Interesting... has time travel always been this common? Though from what I can see, these Paradox Pokemon are different from the Ultra Beasts- rather than being from an entirely different world, they are instead from this world, but at different periods of time. It is interesting to see how the ones from the past have evolved over time into the Pokemon we know today! I think I like Sandy Shocks. It certainly will be a problem if these Paradox Pokemon escape the crater and run amok in the region, though- the world has changed greatly (or has not yet changed to what it is they will need) and their presence could have devastating effects on the ecosystem :(

Causes of Exhaust Black Smoke
Tumblr media
One of the most straightforward smokers to identify and address is black smoke from the exhaust. The majority of the time, mechanics encourages vehicle owners to call them as soon as they notice this kind of smoke for this reason. Because they believe the smoke will go away on its own, most car owners opt to ignore it.
It's true that when you start your car, there may occasionally simply be a little flash of smoke that quickly disappears. If the smoke doesn't go away, though, you should be aware that there is a problem and take the appropriate action to bring it to the auto service and repair shop. Please keep in mind that this kind of smoke is typically brought on by a number of issues, including malfunctioning turbochargers, leaking valves, damaged air filters, and faulty injectors.
The good news is that if any of the issues are discovered quickly, they are very fixable. Consequently, be careful not to disregard the smoke when you notice it. Also, check MOT status of your car and ensure the black smoke issue is fixed beforehand as this most likely will lead to an emissions test failure on your next MOT test.
Black Smoke: What Does It Mean?
Black smoke is merely a sign that your car's engine is using too much fuel. By this, we can imply that the fuel is polluted or that the oil and fuel mixture in the engine is excessive. Keep in mind that even though the fuel and oil are supposed to mix, the ratio must be just correct. It is sad that the majority of diesel engines have a higher rate, which affects both diesel and petrol engines.
As mentioned earlier, excessive black smoke coming from the exhaust can result in an emissions test failure on a MOT. If you are curious if this was the case in the past, you can go online and search ‘check MOT history’ where you will get all the information on pass and failed MOT tests.
For example, when we look at a diesel vehicle, we typically see black smoke coming from the exhaust as soon as the ignition is turned on. Another occasion is when it's cold outside or when there's a lot of acceleration being used. Nevertheless, in these three scenarios, the black smoke that emanates from your exhaust is frequently made up of substantial clouds.
Even though most vehicles with diesel engines are more common, the smoke you see when looking at a petrol vehicle is probably the result of over fuelling, just like with diesel vehicles. This turbocharger serves as an exhaust-driven pipe that pushes more air into the engine and is combined by extra fuel to give increased power, a phenomenon most frequently observed in turbocharged vehicles. Remember that adequate air must be delivered for the additional fuel to burn efficiently, which necessitates a functioning turbocharger.
However, the turbocharger won't produce enough air for the extra fuel to be adequately burned if it is worn down or has a leak in its pipework. As a result, the surplus fuel will undoubtedly be expelled through the exhaust. Remember that if you ignore the persistent smoke, you run the danger of harming the catalytic converter and the sensors in your vehicle. Therefore, it is recommended to look online for car garages in Reading and book your car in with a qualified mechanic on the first experience of excessive black smoke coming from the exhaust.
What Causes Black Smoke from Exhaust the Most?
Black smoke from the exhaust can be caused by a number of problems. These might be brought on by a clogged air filter, a blocked manifold, faulty fuel injection, or other problems. Black smoke is released when the engine is burning fuel, as can be seen while looking at both petrol and diesel vehicles.
By searching online for garages in Reading and booking your car in with a professional mechanic, you can be sure that the correct investigations are carried out and the right repairs or part(s) replacement to resolve the issue.
Nevertheless, a rich fuel mixture in the petrol engine vehicle is known to also cause it to spew dark grey smoke. But hold on! Some problems are common to both diesel and petrol vehicles, while others are unique to a particular engine. So, without further ado, let's examine these issues in greater detail, starting with petrol-powered vehicles.
Petrol Engine
1.Filthy Filters - A dirty filter is one of the main contributors to black smoke from exhaust petrol. This is because the dirt interferes with the emission control systems by preventing clean air from reaching the engine. By decreasing the airflow, a rich fuel mixture is created, which typically leads to the spark plug and other components being damaged.
2.Faulty Oxygen Sensor - A faulty oxygen sensor is another factor in the generation of black smoke. Its primary duty is to communicate information to the engine control unit so that it can run your car effectively and without emitting any emissions. Your vehicle will undoubtedly run less effectively if you have a defective oxygen sensor, which might result in smoke in addition to other issues. These typically include issues with difficulty starting, poor idling, and high fuel consumption.
3.Faulty Car Computer - A malfunctioning car computer may potentially be to blame for your vehicle's smoke emissions. The car may experience many issues as a result of the malfunctioning computer, including misfiring, stalling, and black smoke coming from the exhaust. Keep in mind that the symptoms may come and go, so it's important to be alert when you observe them.
Diesel Engine
1.Dirty Air Filter - As you are probably aware, a typical engine burns all of the gasoline it contains, only emitting CO2 and water. However, black smoke will ultimately emerge from the exhaust when the fuel is only partially consumed. When this occurs, you should inspect the air filter to determine whether it is blocked because it is filthy. If it is unquestionably blocked, all you need to do is replace it out for another one.
2.Fuel Injector Malfunction - A fuel injector, located at the engine's head, is a crucial component of your car's fuel system. To ensure that the fuel enters the cylinder directly, it is precisely situated at the intake manifold next to the intake valve. It also makes sure that the fuel is directed toward the engine inlet valve. This means that if the fuel injector develops a malfunction as a result of becoming blocked with debris, it cannot perform its function. As a result, when you accelerate your car, the additional fuel creates a solid carbon residue that is released as black smoke.
3.Bad Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor – The mass airflow sensor is primarily responsible for ensuring that the right amount of fuel and air are combined when entering the engine. But sometimes, especially if the MAF is poor, that's not the case. This is because it will detect increased airflow entering the system, which will cause an excess of fuel to flow into the engine. Unburned fuel will eventually remain in the combustion chamber and be released as black smoke.
4.A Dirty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve - This circulates a tiny quantity of engine exhaust back into the combustion chambers to lower the combustion temperature, as the name of the device suggests. Due to the reduction in nitrogen oxide generation, this step is essential. However, because the EGR valves are unable to control the growth of nitrogen oxides, they frequently fail when the improper quantity of carbon (IV) oxide is reintroduced to the combustion chamber. Therefore, it's crucial to clean them first and check to see if the black smoke is still coming from the exhaust before deciding whether or not to replace the EGR valve.

How To Find The Ideal common rail injector wholesaler?
Since common rail injectors are a part of the diesel engine system, they have to deliver fuel with a high degree of accuracy. Bosch is one of the major suppliers of original equipment and aftermarket common rail injectors. This article focuses on what factors to look into when purchasing common rail injectors for your car as well as where to purchase from reliable sellers.
What is the concept of the Common Rail Injectors and why is it relevant?
The modern diesel injection systems, known as Common rail injector systems, have almost displaced the previous diesel injection systems in today’s diesel cars. As opposed to previous generations, there is a single common high-pressure fuel rail for all injectors. This enables better management of injection pressures, timing and the atomization which in turn result in improved fuel combustion.
Tumblr media
Common rail injectors are needed for the best performance of an engine, and they should be well-engineered. Any trouble with faulty injectors leads to problems such as elevated emissions, reduced fuel efficiency, power drop, cold start, and rough idling. Worn or faulty units would need to be replaced by quality products and this would solve the problem.
Bosch stands out as a market leader in this segment, as it was the company that invented and owns the patent for the first common rail system dating back to the late 1960s. A significant number of OEMs use Bosch injectors for factory fitting during the assembly line.
Bosch common rail injectors have improved designs that give an increased emphasis on control and spray pattern. This enhances emissions and fuel consumption for better combustion efficiencies while providing quiet and smooth operations.
Where to Find Replacement Injectors
Identifying the right common rail injector wholesaler is vital in ensuring one gets the right part that fits the OE requirements. Generic injectors that are produced to lower quality may not last long or even work sub-optimally.
It is better to purchase Bosch remanufactured or new genuine injectors from well reputable wholesalers. These parts are as good as OE quality and cheaper than dealer parts in terms of costs.
One example is Wunfa Group – an international business organization that deals with Diesel engine parts and is established in China. They supply new and reconditioned Bosch common rail injectors which are exported from all over the world as an authorized agent of Bosch.
Tumblr media
Their injectors are wholesale injectors ideal for most makes and applications. It has in-house testing facilities and employs a team of skilled professionals who help deliver a product that meets the OE standards before being exported to different markets.
Conclusion
These injector faults which are associated with bosch common rail injector systems have great impacts on the operation and durability of diesel engines. Bosch original or refurbished replacement injectors offered through reputable distributors such as Wunfa Group allow you to enjoy an OE-level product and bring your vehicle back to life quickly. Consult with several leading injector manufacturers to get the appropriate injectors for your car model.

Train Talk Tuesday
Tumblr media
Train Talk Tuesday: As promised, this post will be about Hydrogen trains, because god fucking damnit, I have had enough of this hydrogen bullshit in trains, and I figured it would make for a great post. In this, I will cover what hydrogen trains are, a few examples in the wild/proposed, why they're incredibly dumb and bad, and what we could actually invest in instead of these half-baked attempts at rail-based transportation, featuring the dumbfucks from the California Department of Transportation, or CalTrans, and the United Kingdom. If you're ready, then stand clear from the closing doors, for the train is now ready to depart.
First off, what is a hydrogen train?
Talkin About The (H2) Flow
Tumblr media
True to its name, a hydrogen train is a train that is powered purely off of Hydrogen gas, the lightest element on the Periodic Table. You also sometimes see them referred to as Hydrail or Zero Emission Multiple Units, or ZEMUs (Which is a bit of a dumb definition, but more on that later). The Hydrogen gas stored in these trains can be used to power it in a few different ways, either by burning the gas through an internal combustion engine, or using fuel cells to generate electricity from the gas, which in turn powers electric motors which drive the train, in a similar vein to diesel-electrics. The big selling point about these so-called "ZEMUs" is that both methods of powering the train yield no harmful pollutants, as burning Hydrogen gas only creates water vapor, due to how combustion works, and fuel cells generate electricity via reactions with hydrogen and oxygen, hence their marketing as "zero-emissions". Some notable examples of hydrogen trains you can see in the real world include the Stadler FLIRT H2 built for Metrolink (see above), the Alstom Coradia iLint (see below), and an upcoming conversion of a Class 60 diesel locomotive to hydrogen combustion (with some...quirks, but more on that later)
Tumblr media
Now, I want to make it clear here that something like this on-paper is something I'd fully support. I am not a conspiracy theory crackhead who thinks that climate change is a myth, so something that could provide necessary transportation with no pollution involved is something I would support. But, notice I said on-paper. In practice, hydrogen trains have a myriad of issues which don't paint them as the environmentally friendly solution you would think they would be, and on top of that, there's an older technology we have that makes these things completely irrelevant. But, let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Let's talk about the problems.
A Grey Green Lie
Tumblr media
Now once again, from the surface, its easy to think that hydrogen is a clean alternative to fossil fuels, because hey, no greenhouse gases emitted during burning, unlike those fossil fuels, and we can just get hydrogen from water! It's the perfect fuel source!
Yeahhhh. I wish.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, a large portion of the hydrogen we source involves Methane gas, which is commonly sourced from natural gas deposits. The most common method of hydrogen production, Steam-Methane Reforming, involves using high-pressure steam and methane gas and forcing them to react with each other, which derives hydrogen from the methane. Now, if it wasn't bad enough that this process involved fossil fuels, this process does yield some amounts of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide, the latter of which is to blame for climate change occurring. So even if the desired gas itself doesn't produce greenhouse gases while being used for energy, its production already involves not only a fossil fuel, but it produces the greenhouse gases that the desired gas was trying to avoid. (For additional reading, this is a good source)
The only source of hydrogen that has the potential to be clean all the way through is Green Hydrogen, which relies on electrolysis to derive hydrogen from water. The major problem with this approach is that compared to Grey Hydrogen, it is a much more expensive and resource intensive method of obtaining hydrogen, requiring more capital and energy overall to even make feasible compared to SMR with Grey Hydrogen, hence why this option is usually passed up. And even then, Green Hydrogen only has the potential to be 100% clean. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewability has stated that the current grid isn't ready for mass-hydrogen production yet, as most of the electricity generated for the United States still comes from non-renewable sources, which would negate the "clean" benefit of Green Hydrogen entirely. (Source for anyone curious) And even with a purely green powered grid, there's a certain other option regarding powering trains which blows hydrogen away to the far reaches of the universe. But, odd, I don't seem to be able to remember what it could be. Eh, maybe it will come back to me later.
So, what about that fancy hydrogen-powered FLIRT ordered by CalTrans? Well, its more than likely going to be fueled up by that Grey Hydrogen stuff, so any notion of it being a "clean" alternative is null and void. And on top of that, these dumbfucks have the AUDACITY to even call it a so-called "Zero Emission Multiple Unit". I-I just...WHYYYYYYY. I absolutely despise that name, because all it is for is to convince the general population that its this "clean" solution to transit woes and will bring on an "era of sustainability". Its a pure marketing stunt, and for that, I despise it with every fiber of my being.
But even that pails in comparison to the UK choosing to convert one of their old diesel locomotives to burn hydrogen. But, being the UK, they have to have some kind of stupid and weird quirk with it, and in this case, the locomotive itself won't be using hydrogen to power the train directly. Rather, its going to use hydrogen to heat water, in order to power a fucking STEAM TURBINE, to generate the electricity to power the locomotive.
I-I just-I don't even know what to say anymore.
There's honestly a lot more about hydrogen trains that I could rant about in this post, but so far, I haven't mentioned anything about what's the solution to this hydrogen craze. All I've talked about are what they are and why they suck. It is clear that we are in desperate need of a clean solution to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels which isn't these meme machines. I just cannot seem to figure out watt would fit the bill, though. What we need is something so truly electrifying, so powerful, something which would truly shock the minds of those in charge and would fix all of our current issues regarding our dependencies on fossil fuels for transit, and could be implemented on a scale so wide there would be next to no resistance to it being the undisputed key to the sustainability we so crave. If only...
Tumblr media
Oh, but there is.
The Shock You Didn't Expect
Tumblr media
That's right, every single one of the problems I mentioned with hydrogen trains we have already solved using regular electrification. Electric trains not only produce zero emissions while in operation, but they can also be powered by 100% renewable energy, making Green Hydrogen completely irrelevant. Trains can come in either locomotive hauled or multiple unit varieties, so if you wanted a true "Zero Emission Multiple Unit", we have that covered in the form of Electric Multiple Units, or EMUs. On top of that, an electric train doesn't have to carry any kind of fuel with it, meaning it can not only run for a theoretical indefinite period, not requiring any downtime for refueling, but it will always be inherently more efficient than anything which requires onboard fuel storage, due to a lower axle weight caused by freeing up space taken up by the fuel storage. Electrification is something that the United States is no stranger to, with the notable examples of early electrification being the Baltimore & Ohio railroad being the first railroad in the continental United States to open an electrified line for revenue service in 1895, to the great Pennsylvania Railroad, who's legacy of electrified rail corridors survive to this day as parts of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and Keystone Corridor, to even recent examples in California, where up in the Bay Area, Caltrain has finished electrifying a large portion of their main line in preparation for electric revenue service. There are no obstacles to electrification, no excuses, no issues. This nation is fully capable of doing these kinds of projects.
So, conclusion time?
On the surface, a train powered by hydrogen seems like a logical step forward for rail-based transport in the pursuit for a greener future. Yet this green solution that we praise as our savior hides within a dark secret, for it has a heart of methane, and it will only further our dependencies on fossil fuels. Meanwhile, the true green solution, electrification, continues to be shunned and shoved aside as we chase down new, unproven technologies in our thirst for sustainability salvation. If we are to truly perfect our transportation and achieve a status of carbon neutral, the path we must take won't be some unproven technology like hydrogen and batteries, but the path we took in the past, being proper electrification. It will definitely take a while for us to move on from our tie to fossil fuels, but if we know to avoid false promises like this hydrogen bullshit, then the move will be just that little bit faster.

Avoiding Disaster: How to Identify and Address Contaminated Diesel Fuel Problems
Contaminated diesel fuel problems can be a nightmare for any engine owner, leading to costly repairs, decreased performance, and even complete breakdowns. Luckily, by being proactive and aware of the signs, you can avoid a disaster and ensure your equipment runs smoothly.
Tumblr media
The Silent Threat
Diesel fuel particle contamination often occurs unseen, lurking within your storage tanks or fuel lines. The culprits can be various, including:
Water: This is one of the most common contaminants, entering through condensation or leaks. Water can cause corrosion, clog filters, and promote the growth of bacteria (diesel bug) that further contaminate the fuel.
Dirt and debris: Dust, dirt, and other debris can enter the tank during fueling or through openings, clogging filters and injectors.
Biodiesel blends: Improperly blended or degraded biodiesel can cause compatibility issues with standard diesel, leading to engine problems.
Warning Signs
While contamination might not be readily apparent, there are several red flags to watch out for:
Engine performance issues: Reduced power, rough idling, increased smoke, and difficulty starting are all potential signs of contaminated fuel.
Clogged fuel filters: Frequent filter replacements can indicate debris or microbial growth in the fuel.
Visible signs: Rust or corrosion in the tank, along with sludge or water accumulation, are telltale signs of contamination.
Taking Action
If you suspect contaminated fuel, don't ignore it! Here's what to do:
Stop using the equipment: This prevents further damage to the engine and fuel system.
Test the fuel: Analyze a sample of the fuel to identify the type and extent of contamination.
Contact a professional: Depending on the severity, a fuel polishing service or complete fuel system cleaning might be necessary. They can safely remove the contaminated fuel and perform necessary cleaning and repairs.
Prevention is Key
To avoid the hassle and expense of dealing with contaminated fuel, adopt these preventive measures:
Purchase fuel from reputable sources: Opt for well-maintained fuel stations with good storage practices.
Regularly inspect your fuel storage tanks: Check for leaks, condensation, and signs of rust or corrosion.
Perform routine maintenance: Schedule regular fuel filter changes and fuel system cleanings to prevent build-up and microbial growth.
Use proper storage practices: Store diesel fuel in appropriate containers, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
By being proactive and taking the necessary steps, you can safeguard your equipment from the damaging effects of contaminated diesel fuel and ensure smooth operation for years to come. Get started!

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s anti-car ULEZ tax scheme is part of a wider “war on individual liberty” against the British people, Laurence Fox told Breitbart London.
On the campaign trail in Uxbridge, as he seeks to replace Boris Johnson in the House of Commons in the by-election on Thursday, Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox has found that the issue most concerning to voters in the London suburb is Mayor Sadiq Khan’s expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
Mayor Khan’s supposedly climate-inspired initiative is set to expand the £12.50 (~$15.50) tax per day for driving anywhere in all 32 boroughs of the capital next month, in a move that opponents have noted will disproportionately impact the working class, many of whom need to drive or commute in London to earn a living.
Yet for Fox, hiding behind the green veneer are the hallmarks of the craven desire for authoritarian control.
“There’s a war on individual liberty,” Fox told Breitbart London. “It’s like all great pieces of social engineering, it’s very slow. It’s boiling the frog, the frog doesn’t know it’s getting boiled. And those people that can see it for what it is, and can see what’s coming, are waving the flags and trying to warn people, but a lot of people want to bury their heads in the sand and hope it all goes away. But the problem is, it’s not going to go away.”
“You can’t just get in your car and go somewhere without being fined or taxed in some way, but where does it stop?”
Tumblr media
The actor turned political campaigner, who stared in the Breitbart original film My Son Hunter, went on to note that the very same people who bought into the government’s urging to buy diesel cars to protect the environment are the same people who are now being told that they can’t drive their supposedly more environmentally friendly cars in London without being taxed for the privilege.
“We’re in a cost of living crisis, we’re about to go through a major financial crisis towards the end of the year, energy bills are going to be off the charts, inflation is out of control and people can’t afford their lives.
“So then, on top of that, they say we’re going to charge you an extra 60 quid a week just to for the privilege of owning a car or a van to get to work. It’s really criminal.”
“But I think people are becoming aware of the fact that it’s just taxation in the name of false salvation,” Fox said.
So far, the most visible aspect of Khan’s expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone — which had previously only been confined to the heart of London — has been the installation of licence plate-reading street cameras to monitor which cars enter and exit the green tax zone.
Perhaps taking a cue from the Yellow Vest protesters who rose up against the carbon tax plans of Emmanuel Macron, members of the British public have deployed unorthodox means of civil disobedience over the plan, allegedly destroying the cameras in droves.
“I think they’ve reached the limit, I think people a lot of people are aware with the ULEZ cameras, all the implementation of this 15-minute cities thing about ‘we’re going to make it so easy for you, that everything will be within 15 minutes of where you are’. But if you build the control mechanism before you build the infrastructure, then it gets it just reminds people of what you are doing.”
“Don’t build the cameras before you built the shops.”

Understanding Wrong Fuel Issues
Filling your vehicle with the wrong type of fuel—whether it's petrol instead of diesel, or vice versa—can lead to significant engine problems and costly repairs if not addressed promptly. Here’s a brief overview of the common wrong fuel scenarios:
Petrol in a Diesel Engine: Diesel engines rely on diesel fuel’s lubrication properties to keep the fuel system functioning correctly. When petrol is introduced, it can strip the lubrication and cause damage to the fuel pump and injectors. This can result in poor engine performance, increased emissions, and even complete engine failure if not resolved quickly.
Diesel in a Petrol Engine: Diesel fuel is thicker and more viscous than petrol. When diesel is added to a petrol engine, it can cause severe damage to the fuel system and engine components. The engine may misfire, experience reduced performance, or fail to start entirely.
