Wrong Number part 4
Part One, Part Two, Part Three
After stopping by the William Wallace memorial, Jason suggested they stop by a cafe for some lunch. He ordered the fish and chips-- how could he be in London and not try that at least once-- but was thoroughly disappointed in the results. He picked at it despondently while Salim seemed more pleased with his chosen meal.
“I have to say,” Salim spoke up, “that seeing you 'nerd out' over the memorial was worth the trip. Are you a history buff?”
“Nah.” Jason cracked a grin. “Just a huge fan of Braveheart. Saw it so many fuckin' times I wore out the VHS.” Salim matched his grin and Jason quickly ducked his head, shoving a chip in his mouth.
It was annoying how handsome and funny Salim was, how easy it was to banter with him, how comfortable Jason felt in the man's presence. Jason hadn't felt so stupidly giddy around a guy in years.
“What would you like to see next?” Salim asked him.
“Nope, it's your turn. I already picked the Eye and the memorial.”
“You 'picked the Eye'?” Salim repeated, his lip twitching and eyes dancing. “That doesn't sound very hygienic.” Jason laughed despite himself.
“That was a terrible joke.” Salim just smiled, and Jason's stupid heart fluttered crazily in his chest. “Seriously, though, you should pick where we go next.”
“It's hard to choose,” Salim admitted. “As you said, there are so many historical places in the city. The Globe Theatre, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben's clock tower, the British Museum...”
“Nerd,” Jason teased him.
“I should save the museum for Zain,” Salim amended after some thought. “The Globe is being renovated, but they might still be open for tours if you're interested.”
“Sure,” Jason agreed, hoping he didn't sound too eager. “We can both nerd out.”
“How so?” Salim wondered.
“I've seen Shakespeare in Love.” Jason had to fight to keep a straight face. Salim gave him an incredulous look, but then his expression widened when he caught Jason's smile.
“You're messing with me.”
“A little,” Jason agreed, chuckling. Fuck, this guy was too damn cute. “I read most of the plays,” Jason confessed more seriously. “But keep that between us, all right?”
“Don't worry, Jason,” Salim responded with a soft tone in his voice. “I will never tell a soul that you are, in truth, a Shakespeare nerd.” Jason laughed and punched the other man gently on the shoulder.
“You're such an asshole.” Salim's eyes danced merrily back at him. Fuck, fuck, Jason's stupid giddy feeling was just getting worse. He just met this guy yesterday and already crushing so hard it was going to hurt when they finally parted ways.
Not yet, though. Jason had at least another hour or two with Salim.

The Weekend Update: February Weekends!
The past few weekends have been really fun and exciting. I want to take you guys weekend by weekend to show how easy it is not only to travel around Europe, but also the benefits of staying in your home away from home for a weekend.
2/6
My first weekend was actually a pretty unexpected travel weekend. I was in Prague for less than a week but remembered my mom was going to London on a work trip. I knew since we were so close, I had to visit! On Saturday morning I found a flight that would leave to London Sunday morning, with a return flight to Prague the following day (Monday) in the afternoon. Even though it was only 24 hours I was in London, we had an amazing time together and I would not trade the experience for the world. I have been to London once before with my family 7 years ago and being back made me realize how much I remembered from my previous trip.
Tumblr media
When I arrived in London, we went and grabbed some fish and chips, then went on our own walking tour of the classic London attractions: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, and finished up at a Pub watching a football game, yes that’s soccer :)
By the following morning, it was already time to go on the hour Uber ride to the airport. Even though it was for one real day, I would not want to change it for the world. Having my mom for a little bit, really helped me adjust completely to my abroad lifestyle and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to see her so soon after going abroad.
2/10-2/12
The following weekend was also a last minute type of trip. Ashley and I were looking at inexpensive locations near Prague for both travel and accommodations once arriving in the city. We realized that the best location would be in Berlin, Germany.
To preface, I was excited to see Berlin but also had an underlying eeriness to it since I am Jewish and Berlin was the center of the Nazi Party during WWII. Additionally, I was excited to go because when my grandfather was in the Soviet army, he was stationed throughout East Germany, specifically Berlin and Dresden, which was pretty much the exact bus route I took.
Tumblr media
Once arriving in Berlin, I already had unwritten “beef” with the city, but I tried not to let it influence my opinion of my trip there. We got to our hostel and ended up becoming good friends with our roommate, her name was Paula and from Argentina. She gave us recommendations throughout the city and we started exploring!
We got to see the Brandenburg Gate, the Jewish memorial in Berlin, as well as the main Cathedral.
Tumblr media
I wish we could have gotten to see more (including the wall) but it was pouring rain the full day we had there and it was impossible to get around. Definitely have to go back for another trip.
Additionally, nightlife and techno is something that is a part of Berlin culture. We went to a bar and ended up also making friends with some girls from Berlin as well as Ukraine.
Side note: in Prague too, there are a lot of Ukranians, it is absolutely horrific what is going on two countries away from me too.
On our walk though, we passed by the Russian embassy in Berlin. They had a recreation of Alexi Navalny’s jail cell as well as a Ukrainian memorial. Walking around Berlin made me realize how close I am to the conflict and how some of the amazing people I am meeting are completely displaced from their homes with war terrorizing their homeland.
Tumblr media
2/17-2/20
This weekend was a really special weekend for me. One of my closest childhood friends, Gianna, was coming to visit! She is studying abroad in Edinburgh this semester and came to Prague for the weekend…. thus, tour guide Hannah came out!!!!
Tumblr media
We went to Prague Castle, the top of the clock tower, and honestly I went to more tourist places during this weekend than before. We went to different markets and would not trade the experience.
I felt like walking around the city with Gianna helped me gain a new perspective of how amazing Prague really is. It is a truly hidden gem in Europe and everyday here I learn something new about the city and the Czech culture.
Tumblr media
Having her here was also like another piece of home was with me. Seeing how much she is thriving in Scotland prompted me to book a flight to visit her!!
2/24-2/25
Last weekend in February calls for the monthly CEA excursion, these excursions are included in our study abroad tuition which is really nice to have! This weekend we went to Cesky Krumlov, the whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage site!
Tumblr media
It is a two and a half hour bus ride and I got to be able to go with my entire program. It was a really nice way to get introduced to those in my program whom I do not have classes with.
Tumblr media
When arriving we went around the town to explore and then had tours of the castle tower and the theater there that is in complete Baroque style.
Tumblr media
At night, we went to a cafe and then a typical Czech restaurant, where I had the goulash :)
The next day was really cool… we didn’t know the weekend that we were there, Cesky Krumlov had their annual pig slaughtering event. No pigs were harmed during the event but an entire street had tables and had a whole pig roast and the pig that was used was made into many different traditional Czech food items, my favorite being the pate given
Tumblr media
I felt really fortunate to be able to experience this cultural celebration and it was a great way to finish off the weekend!!
This next month is also filled with a lot of travel… Current travel plans for March include:
London again (for 12 hours this time!)
Lake Como and Venice, Italy
Dublin, Ireland
Salzburg and Hallstatt, Austria
Edinburgh, Scotland
See you in the next blog!

As our visit to London comes to an end, I want to review some of the Pokemon we collected along the way.
Tumblr media
Trafalgar Square is a public square in the City of Westminster, Central London, established in the early 19th century around the area formerly known as Charing Cross. The Square's name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, the British naval victory in the Napoleonic Wars over France and Spain that took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar.
Tumblr media
The Tower bridge was completed in 1894. It is about 240 metres (800 feet) in length and provides an opening 76 metres (250 feet) wide. Its twin towers rise 61 metres (200 feet) above the Thames. Between the towers stretch a pair of glass-covered walkways that are popular among tourists. The walkways were originally designed to allow pedestrians to cross even while the bridge was raised, but they became hangouts for prostitutes and thieves and so were closed from 1909 to 1982.
Tumblr media
St Paul's Cathedral. This religious monument is particularly known for its architecture that boasts Neoclassical English Baroque-style elements designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The cathedral's most distinguishing feature is its lead-covered dome, one of the world's largest and tallest domes.
Tumblr media
Around 180 generations have passed since the stones were erected at Stonehenge…
Tumblr media
Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, is an Anglican church in the City of Westminster, London, England. Since 1066, it has been the location of the coronations of 39 English and British monarchs,[5] and a burial site for 18 English, Scottish and British monarchs.[6] At least 16 royal weddings have occurred at the abbey since 1100.
Tumblr media
Buckingham Palace is a London royal residence and the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning.
Tumblr media
Big Ben! The tower was designed by Augustus Pugin in a neo-Gothic style. When completed in 1859, its clock was the largest and most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world. The tower stands 316 feet tall, and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334 steps. Its base is square, measuring 40 feet on each side. Dials of the clock are 22.5 feet in diameter. All four nations of the UK are represented on the tower on shields featuring a rose for England, thistle for Scotland, shamrock for Ireland, and leek for Wales.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The London Eye, or the Millennium Wheel, is a cantilevered observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. It is Europe's tallest cantilevered observation wheel, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over three million visitors annually.

London’s Legacy: A Traveler’s Journey Through England’s Iconic Landmarks
Tumblr media
London, a city where the past and present coexist in a seamless blend of history, culture, and modernity, has always captivated travelers with its timeless charm. As I set foot in this iconic metropolis, I knew I was about to embark on a journey through some of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, each with its own story to tell.
Day 1: The Majesty of Westminster
My journey began at Westminster, the heart of London’s political and royal heritage. The sight of Big Ben towering over the Thames left me in awe. Though I had seen it countless times in photographs, nothing compared to witnessing the grandeur of this iconic clock tower in person. Across the street stood the Palace of Westminster, home to the British Parliament, its Gothic architecture a striking reminder of the nation’s storied political past.
Walking further, I arrived at Westminster Abbey, a masterpiece of medieval architecture. As I stepped inside, I was transported through centuries of royal history, with kings and queens having been crowned, married, and buried within its hallowed walls. The sense of tradition and ceremony is palpable here, making it one of the most profound experiences of my visit.
Day 2: Royal Splendor and Urban Elegance
No trip to London is complete without visiting Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarch. I joined the crowd gathered for the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a spectacle of British pomp and pageantry. The rhythmic march of the guards, clad in their red uniforms and bearskin hats, was a true embodiment of London’s regal spirit.
From Buckingham Palace, I ventured to Hyde Park, one of London’s largest and most beloved green spaces. Walking through its peaceful gardens, I paused by the Serpentine Lake to enjoy the tranquility. It’s hard to believe that amidst the city’s hustle and bustle, a serene oasis like Hyde Park exists.
Later, I visited Kensington Palace, the former residence of Princess Diana. The palace’s exhibitions gave me insight into the lives of Britain’s royal family, and strolling through its beautiful gardens felt like stepping into another era.
Day 3: Exploring London’s Historic Streets
On my third day, I took a journey back in time as I explored the Tower of London. This historic fortress has served as a royal palace, prison, and even a zoo. Standing in front of the White Tower, I imagined the turbulent events that unfolded here—executions, imprisonments, and the safeguarding of the Crown Jewels. Seeing the dazzling jewels firsthand, especially the infamous Koh-i-Noor diamond, was a surreal experience.
Next, I made my way to Tower Bridge, one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. The view from the glass walkway, suspended high above the Thames, was breathtaking. Looking down at the river flowing beneath me, I marveled at how this bridge has connected Londoners for over a century.
In the afternoon, I visited St. Paul’s Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece by Sir Christopher Wren. Climbing to the top of the dome was no small feat, but the panoramic view of London’s skyline from the Golden Gallery was worth every step. As I stood there, taking in the sight of modern skyscrapers blending with historic structures, I understood why London is often described as a city of contrasts.
Day 4: The Cultural Heart of London
I dedicated my final day to exploring London’s vibrant cultural scene. My first stop was the British Museum, home to countless artifacts from ancient civilizations. Walking through the Rosetta Stone exhibit and marveling at the Elgin Marbles, I realized how London has become a repository of world history and culture.
Later, I wandered through the streets of Covent Garden, a lively district filled with street performers, boutiques, and restaurants. The energy of the place was contagious, and I found myself spending hours just soaking in the atmosphere.
In the evening, I headed to Piccadilly Circus, with its neon signs and bustling crowds, before capping off my night in the West End. Watching a live performance in one of London’s renowned theaters was the perfect way to conclude my journey through this dynamic city.
Conclusion: London’s Legacy with Roomchai Limited

Just a short walk from the Tate Modern is the Millennium Bridge, a stunning piece of modern engineering that connects the South Bank with St. Paul’s Cathedral. Designed by Norman Foster, the bridge’s sleek and minimalistic design allows for uninterrupted views of the surrounding architecture.
Continuing along the South Bank, you’ll come across The Shard, the tallest building in the United Kingdom. Designed by Renzo Piano, this glass skyscraper stands at 310 meters and offers unparalleled views of the city from its observation deck. The building’s sharp, angular design gives it the appearance of a shard of glass piercing the sky, making it a true modern marvel.
Hidden Gems: Walking Through Historic Districts
While London’s iconic landmarks often steal the spotlight, some of the city’s most fascinating architectural treasures lie in its historic districts. Take a stroll through Covent Garden, where you’ll find beautifully preserved Georgian architecture. The cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and the grand Royal Opera House all contribute to the charm of this area.
Another must-visit is Leadenhall Market, a stunning example of Victorian architecture. This covered market, with its ornate roof and intricate ironwork, transports visitors back to the 19th century. It’s a wonderful spot to pause and admire the craftsmanship that went into creating such a visually stunning space.
A visit to Bloomsbury offers another glimpse into London’s architectural history. This district is famous for its garden squares and grand terraced houses, many of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Bloomsbury’s architecture is a testament to London’s Georgian era, with its elegant facades and classic proportions.
Exploring London’s Skyscrapers
In recent years, London’s skyline has been transformed by an influx of modern skyscrapers. While these buildings may lack the history of their older counterparts, they represent the city’s constant evolution and ambition.
One of the most impressive skyscrapers is The Walkie Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street), known for its distinctive shape and the Sky Garden, an open-air garden located at the top of the building. The Cheesegrater (The Leadenhall Building), designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is another striking example of modern architecture. Its sloped profile is designed to preserve sightlines to St. Paul’s Cathedral, blending contemporary design with respect for London’s architectural heritage.
Why Choose an Architectural Walking Tour?

The Beguinage in Bruges
Tumblr media
I chose this location primarily due to how beautiful and unique this place is. Dedicated to the purpose of housing religious women who come to live in an area that provided support; You can see that nature was the primary focus for these Beguinages. The houses were made simplistic and clean. They feel welcoming but don’t draw attention away from the beautiful gardens and trees surrounding the beguinage. That is why I chose the Beguinage in Bruges.
The Beguinage in Bruges was important to reformation as it was a prime example of what the reformation was. It was a time that challenged the ideas and traditions people of the medieval times had considered to be set in stone. Before this time there were two options for a woman's life. She could either be a wife and a mother or a nun. By going against this tradition by providing an alternative they allowed women to live how they truly wanted to live.
I was surprised by the fact that although these women were devoting their lives to religion and being single, yet they were still part of society. I was also surprised by what seems like a drastic move to make in one’s life by moving to an area dedicated to the religious single women but no vows were required. This was something that women wanted to do and not something they had to do and that is what I felt most surprising.
Westminster Abbey
Tumblr media
I chose Westminster Abbey for my blog because of its significance to the English and British Monarchs. Every British king or queen with a few exceptions have been coronated here as well as 18 of these monarchs have been buried here. I also choose it because it is a prime example of Gothic architecture with its full display of buttresses and flying buttresses that support the Gothic arch used throughout west Munster abbey.
It connects to the reformation because this was where King Henry VIII was coronated. This man had a big impact on the Renaissance as he was ruler of a power house country at the time, and started his own religion in retaliation of the Pope not bending to his demands. This was important as before the Renaissance kings had been under Popes in the Hierarchy of power. Now for the first time a king has decided that he is greater than a Pope and doesn’t need the Pope. He was also known for his several wives and all of them being unable to produce a male heir. He overthrew the hierarchy of the Middle Ages and pursued his own beliefs and all of that started with him getting coronated at Westminster Abbey.
One thing that surprised me is that there is a lady chapel that was an extension of Westminster Abbey in honor of the Virgin Mary. As someone not very knowledgeable on Catholic traditions it’s surprising to see anyone other than God and Jesus being shown and honored in a church. On top of this they have chapels dedicated to the Royal Air Force, Saint Edward the Confessor's chapel, St. Faiths Chapel, and many others. Overall it was surprising to know that all of these people had chapels in Westminster abbey dedicated to their memory.
Church of St. John
Tumblr media
Basilica of St. Servatius
Tumblr media
The Church of St. John, Maastricht is the red tower and the basilica of St. Servertus is the brown brick church. The reason for choosing these churches was their uniqueness in style that is emphasized by the two separate buildings being part of the same church. The church of Saint John appears as if it’s out of a fairy tail with its extremely unique color of red, it’s immense height, the golden clock, and the contrasting base that seems to follow a completely different style. The basilica of St. Severus is completely different however. Although appearing more similar to a traditional Catholic church the two towers and the cylindrical areas that come out make it distinct. The main thing is that these two things are so close together. Alone they would not seem nearly as special but together the combination of contrasting styles amplifies the ecstatic and is why I choose these churches for my project.
These churches connect to the reformation in what it represented. The Basilica of St. Servatius and chapel of St. John was a representation of Roman Catholicism and what came before the reformation. The leaders here would have experienced conflict as reformation spread and threatened the traditions and power the church leaders had. As people began to believe the teachings of other religions attendance for these churches and the power of the church leaders decreased.
What I found surprising about these religious buildings is how close they are to one another. This was my initial reaction as these religious buildings are a couple of feet from each other but it really shouldn’t be when you realize that the Church of Saint John was made to reduce the number of people pushing the maximum capacity of the basilica of Saint Servatius. This allowed these two churches to assume separate, specific functions. The church leaders were able to delegate the responsibilities of baptisms and parish church while the basilica of Saint Servatius could now be a collegiate and pilgrimage church. If you didn’t realize these churches were intended to cover the responsibilities of a Catholic church together and thought they were separate churches then it would be initially surprising however when you realize they are same church just with 2 separate buildings it makes sense.
Aix-la-Chapelle Cathedral
Tumblr media
I chose Aix-la-Chapelle Cathedral because of its beauty and the lord behind the cathedral. The myth of the church leaders making a deal with the devil to give him a soul in exchange for the funds to finish the cathedral is interesting and has an even more interesting ending to it where the church leaders trick the devil by sending a wolf to have its soul sacrificed in place of Charlemagne’s. From this story lore continues as the devils finger is supposedly in the handle of the door. Such beauty and a story behind it is why I choose Aix-la-Chapelle Cathedral.
It connects to reformation heavily through its ties with Charlemagne. Charlemagne was the holy Roman emperor that was able to successfully centralize power in the Holy Roman Empire. The centralization of power is what allowed the Roman Empire to become one of the four Kingdoms coming out of the Middle Ages by forcing the extremely fragmented area to fight as one. Aix-la-Chapelle Cathedral has a myth tied to Charlemagne but it was also the cathedral of Aachen. Charlemagne decided that Aachen would be the capital of the empire and the most important residence. This was largely due to the hot springs present here that supposedly had healing capabilities. So overall it was a very important building in a very important city to the man that through his centralization of power in the Holy Roman Empire was able to bring the world out of the Middle Ages.
One thing I found surprising was the fact that the images all over the cathedral but specifically on the ceiling told the stories of the Bible. I was surprised by how well these images convey the stories they were trying to tell. They only covered the key points but with a little context you can clearly see what images are trying to say. The images are beautiful but they weren’t just for decoration. People at the time coming out of the Middle Ages couldn’t read, and so they relied on images to tell the stories. This is how the common people learned what the Bible said because they couldn’t read it themselves.
Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Tumblr media
I chose Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore because of the story behind its construction. It was the time of the Renaissance and people were discovering things rapidly so they built the Cathedral intended to have a dome at the top. The only issue is that the knowledge of how to build a dome had been lost. The people of Florence were so confident in their intelligence of their people that they believed by the time the cathedral finished the ability to build a dome would be rediscovered. They overestimated their abilities and so the roof was exposed to the sky for years until Filippo Brunelleschi finally rediscovered the dome and made it the biggest one in the world.
This connects to the reformation as it was a result of the mentality that surrounded the reformation. Ideas were springing up everywhere and their ambition for knowledge was leading to creations and works of art that hadn’t been seen since the Roman Empire. Such a massive cathedral was already ambitious with its unique design differentiating it from everything else, but creating this building with a dome was
What surprised me was the ambition and achievement behind the dome on top of this cathedral. It was the biggest dome in the world at the time but also the first built in Italy after the Middle Ages. It’s surprising because of how recently the knowledge to build the dome had been reintroduced. Instead of starting out small and working up, Brunchelli immediately built the dome for the cathedral in Florence, completing a long awaited cathedral and showing how well he truly understood the science behind making a dome.

Westminster Abbey
We stopped by Westminster on our walking tour of London. I chose it because of its breathtaking exterior. We were not able to explore the inside but standing in front and taking in the building was a treat! We all gathered around to get our pictures with the building which can only be expected with a building displaying such beauty.
Westminster is connected to the reformation through King Henry Vlll. Henry is known for breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church and establishing his own church, the Church of England, because the pope would not let him to divorce his wife.
There are many famous people buried or commemorated here like Charles Darwin. The church also houses the remains of Henry’s 4th wife and his children.
What stood out to me was the churches immense size. Up until that point we had visited many churches but none seemed to match Westminster. Gazing on its towering form I also noticed a golden clock imbedded into the front. I think it is interesting that only one clock was installed since it gives the face of the church a semi unsymmetrical look.
