snow overanalyzes Ayreon - 01011001 - part 2
Age of Shadows/We Are Forever
Okay, let’s begin!
“Age of Shadows” introduces the alien race Forever and the tipping point that caused their loss of humanity - and dang is it a track, at 10:48 long. The parallels are wild in this one, and imo it’s a masterpiece in of itself and aughhh
Okay we start with some bubbling water sound effects (Y is an ocean planet) and machine sound effects (Y is also heavily mechanized,,, as we’ll see) that turn into the song’s beat. Heavy instrumental riffs (that are motifed elsewhere!) that gives an energy of conflict. Vibing. I am vibing.
Back to parallels - let’s think of this as part 1. Here we meet Forever ⚡︎ -
Wait, there’s characters?
Yeah there’s characters! (I love this visual by the way - most are Forevers but there’s a few humans as well, with Mr. L/Arjen Anthony Lucassen as the link between them. More on Mr. L later.)
The Forever don’t have names - they’re identified by symbols (𓅛 ♡ 🕈 Ω ✵ ☯ ⛧ ⚡︎ ® ☾). The idea is that they’ve lost their individuality and no longer have names...
Okay, part 1!
Forever ⚡︎ (played by Tom Englund) gives some background to the Forever’s situation - “We never saw this coming / Pride comes before a fall / We never heeded the warnings / Buried deep within us all” Okay already there’s some evidence of hubris or the Forever being some kind of tragic heroes here! Interesting... Forever ⚡︎ goes on to say explain “Our quenchless thirst for knowledge / Our urge to change and grow” caused their downfall - innovation and knowledge are good things! -but to an extent...
Part 2 gets into the chorus, with Forever ☯ (Steve Lee) and Forever ® (Daniel Gildenlöw) lamenting the beginning of the “Age of Shadows” - while it’s not totally clear what this is, it involves “giant machines” casting shadows all over their planet and also the Forever beginning to lose all their emotion.
Part 3 is kind of a bridge section, very operatic and very dramatic! The two characters here, Forever 🕈 (Hansi Kürsch) and Forever Ω (Floor Jansen) kind of express the dichotomy, the tension that exists throughout the first half of the album. Forever 🕈 is like “no this could be a good thing! We’ll be rid of all negative emotions” with lines such as “No more aggression / No more suppression / No more depression” but Forever Ω seemingly wins out with “but there’s no more emotions, sensation, passions that shaped our hearts and made us who we are”. It’s like the difference between logic and emotion, right? Thinking and feeling? Remember that for later. (A lot later.)
Alright, we’ve made it to the central section! The midpoint of the symmetry, basically what everything in the chiasm points to. This part is more soft, subdued, and I love how melodic and melancholic Jonas Renske’s voice is here. Forever ⛧ (Jonas Renske) muses on the Forever’s infinite fate like the others, although his feel more... profound? “Time ... but a curve in space ... we are Forever ... caught in our cold inertia ... eternal prisoners of time” And the imagery here! Merely a curve in space, just another axis in in hyperspace, and yet they’re destined to exist trapped inside it. Arbitrarily. Forever, with no escape from the inevitable, “longing, hoping, waiting for no one.” It’s like the literary archetype of the character who’s granted eternal life but not eternal youth and is destined for existence but in infinite oblivion! It touches on the fear that life without purpose, without meaning, is a fate much worse than death...
Forever ♡ (Anneke Van Giersbergen) includes some sentiments that don’t make much sense to me (“Forever is but a scream” etc?), but coming to terms with eternity? Yeah that really does one on the mind.
Okay now for the binary bit!
Tumblr media
Like the album’s title, these are encoded messages in ASCII, repeating “help”, “forever”, and “SOS” (“save our ship”... or possibly “save our souls?” yeah I like that interpretation). Musically, this part is super mesmerizing and layered with more Forever ♡ lines. Thematically, it’s powerful because it’s the center of the song, the crux, and all there is is a mechanized cry for help...
Now basically the whole song is paralleled in reverse - another Forever ⛧ line (“longing, hoping, waiting for no one”), then Part 3 again (“no more aggression”), then Part 2 again (“the Age of Shadows has begun”) (featuring Forever 𓅛 (Jørn Lande) this time around), and then, finally, Part 1 (“we never heeded the warnings / buried deep within us all”).
So wow, what a ride huh? The premise has been set up, we've met several of the characters, who have differing opinions, but otherwise not very distinct because they all have the same dilemma in common. And that's kind of what the song is - a cry for help, nested in dread and conflict and despair and guilt.
The age of shadows has begun - let's see what it brings!
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6

Yesterday, I sent an email to the diocese of the religious community I entered in 2023. In it, I shared a 10-page document recounting my experience as a postulant in this community and the spiritual, emotional, and psychological abuses I sustained at the hands of my religious superiors.
I left the convent on the feast of Saint Lawrence in 2023, but it took me a year of therapy and discussion to find the strength to write everything out, and another half year to muster the courage to send it all to the bishop.
Now that it's finally done, I feel a weight lift from my chest, but I ask you to please pray for me, that I might at last repair my relationship with Our Lord now that I have begun to reach closure with my time in the monastery. Please pray for my former superiors, that they may not harm other young women in the future and that we may meet again in Heaven, in peace. Please pray for the bishop, Monseigneur J., that he may not brush off my experience. Please pray for my former Sisters, that they may be kept safe and healthy in the enclosure, especially for the dear Sister who was with me in the noviciate, Sister Marie E. of Holy Hope. She was meant to take her first vows in May 2024 and I wonder every day where she is now.
Monasteries and convents can be little heavens on earth, even the one where I used to be and in which I experienced many beautiful moments, and I pray that they may all be kept safe from deviations, scrupulosity, jansenism, and abuse. Funnily enough, I still miss the monastery and I often forget how miserable I was as a postulant, because there were also many wonderful aspects to monastic life.
Please pray for me and for all those aspiring to religious life, as well as all religious and superiors, that monasteries may indeed be little heavens rather than hells.
But now, says the Lord— the one who created you, Jacob, the one who formed you, Israel: Don’t fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; when through the rivers, they won’t sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you won’t be scorched and flame won’t burn you. (Isaiah 43:1-2)

HIIIII! I would like to first thank you for all that you do, looking through your blog has really helped me with my writing! It’s been very helpful for me to get rid of overused tropes and correctly write my guys!
Okay so here’s my question, and it’s not about how to write, but rather should I write— I am currently writing a story where most of my main characters have a disability. Now, I’m not (physically) disabled, and of course I’m doing my research on everything, but I’m not sure if I should be writing this. My goal for the message is “hey these people are just like you! They have some differences, but it doesn’t really matter! What matters is that they can still be your friend!” (It’s supposed to be an elementary-level story)
Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to read and answer this!
Hello lovely asker!
I think that more kids books about or with disabled characters is always good! There is such a big range in that elementary reading zone to explore in too!
Most kids start off elementary from reading those cardboard books with only a few pages, a few words, mostly pictures; and then by the time they're leaving elementary they're reading medium to large chapter books. The concepts of the books also change from simple stories that have a clear point of cause/effect, problem solving, or educational stance; and then as the books start to get longer the stories and characters become more complex and the type of stories change.
So for early elementary level story I would recommend looking up other books like
What happened to you by James Catchpole and Karen George
Just Ask by Sonia Sotomayor
ABC's of inclusion by Beth Leipholtz
Included by Jayneen Sanders
The last three take on a more educational stance while the first one takes on a more realistic view of how disability works in a kids eye. Here you're not developing the characters much but more using the characters as your point of learning and showing and recognizing.
For mid-elementary level these are longer books with a few chapters in it, maybe a few pictures here and there. The plot starts to become more complex, while still maintaining that explanation of "Here is what's going on". I think this is what you're going for here? There is still that point of learning (that "hey look they can be your friends" sentiment still carries into these books too). In all honestly I cannot think or find any books that fit here with disabled characters in it so for best reference the Junie B Jones books are this sorta level! Cam Jansen series, magic treehouse series, all of those books that are an introduction to chapter books.
Later elementary leveled books are chapter books like the Percy Jackson series, and now the plot is complex, there are more elements of the story to follow. All of these books follow a character with a disability but there's also another big event that they're navigating now.
Counting By 7's
Roll with it/time to roll
Show me a Sign
Song For A Whale
Insignificant Events in the life of a cactus
This level also tends to overlap with books for teens/young adults and so books like
The fault in our stars
Turtles all the way down
Me earl and the dying girl
Shadow and Bone (Series)
All of these books are lengthier, the characters are completely developed, and now the message is different. Now what these books do is drop the main focus on the characters disability and Instead focus on also the plot. The learning element that we see in earlier elementary books is kinda removed because now there is a whole story going on but that doesn't mean these characters are any less disabled, they still are but now they're going on adventures, solving mysteries, or falling in love.
I rambled a bit but hopefully something here helps and good luck on the writing!

Hello!
Just popping in with a few of my own recommendations for middle/high school level:
A Step Toward Falling by Cammie McGovern
Written in alternating POVs, one is from the POV of a character with an unspecified developmental disability. Also includes several other disabled characters such as a blind autistic character. In this book, disability is a/the main part of the book.
Blind Spot by Laura Ellen
I can't recall the POV as it's been a while but the main character is blind (From macular degeneration) and the author also has the same condition. There are also several characters with other conditions including addictions. In this book, disability is a/the main part of the book.
Dear Mothman by Robin Gow
Written in the POV of a medium support needs autistic character. Also involves several LGBT characters. In this book, disability is a smaller part of the book.
Jerk, California by Jonathan Friesen
Written in the POV of a character with Tourette's Syndrome, by an author who also has Tourette's. In this book, disability is a/the main part of the book.
Love and First Sight by Josh Sundquist
Written in the POV of a blind character. There is also a character with a facial difference here. There are several tropes here that bother me a bit but I feel that they weren't done too badly. In this book, disability is a/the main part of the book.
Planet Earth is Blue by Nicole Panteleakos
Written in the POV of a high support needs autistic character. In this book, disability is a notable part of the book but not the main one.
Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly
Written from the POV of a Deaf girl. It also includes several other Deaf characters, both in the main focus and in the background. In this book, being Deaf is a/the main part of the book.
100 Days by Nicole McInnes
Written in alternating POVs, one of which belongs to a character with progeria. In this book, disability is a smaller part of the book.
100 Sideways Miles by Andrew Smith
Written in the POV of a character with Epilepsy. In this book, disability is a notable part of the book but not the main one.
In terms of books for young children, I personally LOVED the We Are Powerful series, which are small picture books with a more educational style to them. Each book features a child with a disability and talks about their experiences with it, highlighting both the areas where they struggle and the areas where their disability makes them unique.
They aren't perfect, of course, but as a young kid who was just starting to figure out that I was different from everyone around me, they helped me a lot. There are several books in the series that focus on autism, ADD, ADHD, Tourette's, OCD, depression, dyslexia, and several other conditions.
Cheers,
~ Mod Icarus

CNN —
The Justice Department has informed lawyers for Rep. Matt Gaetz and multiple witnesses that it will not bring charges against the Florida Republican after a yearslong federal sex-trafficking investigation.
Senior officials reached out to lawyers for multiple witnesses on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN, to inform them of the decision not to prosecute Gaetz.
The final decision was made by Department of Justice leadership after investigators recommended against charges last year.
“We have just spoken with the DOJ and have been informed that they have concluded their investigation into Congressman Gaetz and allegations related to sex trafficking and obstruction of justice and they have determined not to bring any charges against him,” Gaetz’s lawyers, Marc Mukasey and Isabelle Kirshner, said in a statement.
Tim Jansen, a high-powered lawyer representing the congressman’s ex-girlfriend, said that DOJ officials reached out to him Wednesday and told him they would not be charging Gaetz. The ex-girlfriend was a key witness in the case and had testified before the grand jury in Orlando last year.
The congressman’s office said in a separate statement that the department informed them the investigation has ended and no charges will be brought.
