❝  what  kind  of  twisted  question  is  THAT  supposed  to  be?  ❞  vitriol  spills  from  snarling  lips  at  the  mere  suggestion  of  kazuha  being  hurt.  realization  of  his  error  almost  immediately  prods  at  the  corners  of  his  consciousness  —  for  he  is  perceptive  enough  to  recognize  what  he  can  only  assume  is  an  underhanded  effort  to  PROVOKE  HIM,  yet  far  too  (  shamefully  )  emotional  to  crush  down  his  anger.  it's  preposterous.  it's  repulsive.  it's  equally  simplistic  and  tailor-made  to  bring  him  the  most  suffering  possible  —  and  he  hates  that,  just  as  he  hates  how  clearly  he's  proven  its  efficacy.  teeth  snap  shut  like  the  jaws  of  a  beartrap.  there  is  a  growl  building  in  his  throat,  even  as  ren  tries  (  and  largely  fails  )  to  smother  his  fury.  breathe,  he  reminds  himself.  breathe,  even  if  it's  useless.  breathe,  if  only  for  the  sake  of  having  something  else  to  focus  on  before  he  acts  more  FOOLISH  than  he  already  has.

the  bite  of  nails  digging  so  harshly  into  his  palm  is  strangely  comforting.  it  hurts,  but  not  in  any  capacity  that  would  manage  to  actually  bother  him.  rather,  it  serves  more  as  a  reminder  of  his  physical  presence  in  the  world  beyond  his  own  head.  ❝  ... what  kind  of  answer  are  you  EXPECTING to hear?  ❞  the  wanderer  finally  says,  after  an  AGONIZINGLY  LONG  pause.  in  contrast  to  his  prior  outburst,  his  voice  goes  deathly  cold  —  like  ice,  razor-thin  and  sporting  a  jagged  edge.  his  calmness  is  an  imperfect  facade;  his  wrath  condensed  to  serve  as  a  blade  while  he  goes  on  the  offensive.  ❝  he isn't weak ... and i  would  never  allow  that  to  happen.  it's  a  POINTLESS  scenario  to  even  consider.  ❞   it  is.  it  is.  it  is.  (  it  isn't,  but  he  would  prefer  to  delude  himself  into  believing otherwise,  just  this  once.  )  he  isn't  going  to  think  about  it  —  for  to  even  ENTERTAIN  the  thought  of  his  fiancé  being  tortured  to  the  point  of  breaking  feels  like  an  act  of  the  utmost  disrespect.  he  doesn't  want  to  give  the  idea  even  a  modicum  of  attention;  he  doesn't  want  to  risk  manifesting  something  so  wretched.

does  kazuha  even  know  to  what  degree  the  wanderer's  desire  for  self-improvement  rests  upon  his  shoulders?  that  he  is  his  happiness,  his  salvation,  the  only  thing  keeping  him  from  viewing  this  world  as  completely  irredeemable?  does  he  know  what  ren  would  do  should  anything  happen  to  him?  perhaps  it's  best  that  he  doesn't  —  perhaps  it's  best  that  NO  ONE  ever  does.  the  human  is  already  a  glaring  weakness.  the  atrocities  he  knows he would  commit  in  retaliation  are  BEYOND  forgiveness  and  rationality  alike.

to  call  it  a  tragedy  would  be  an  understatement.  there  would  be  no  victors  in  this  hypothetical  conflict;  they  would  all  BURN, and he would make sure of it — wearing their ashes like a grisly prize.

❝  don't  ask  me  something  that  TASTELESS  ever  again.  ❞   there is implication thick in every word; he  wouldn't  allow  them  to  make  that  mistake  for  a  third  time.
