is it just me or does the way ppl talk about non-english speaking artists in fandom spaces tend to feel... infantilizing? like i get that we have to be mindful of how certain english words might translate (especially with slang words where the meaning differs by a lot from the original one) but they're also not some kind of alien living in a completely separate world from the rest of you where they can't possibly understand english words except if you talk to them like they're a toddler
#i just think some people overcompensate their potential lack of respect by doing too much and instead circle back to being xenophobic#this is coming from a non-english speaker btw#ultimately it's an honest mistake on both parts. you are not wrong for not knowing how your words can come off as in another language just#as much as foreign artists are not wrong for mistakenly thinking they are being insulted and getting defensive about it#tldr learn some nuance yall!!!#t#also i know it can be tricky to know if certain english words can come off as rude in another language that you don't speak and i understan#people just wanting to be safe and avoid conflict and my tips is 1) if it's a slang word where the meaning is completely different from#the original and it might sound demeaning/offensive if taken to mean what it is originally then you might want to avoid using it 2) if you#were to direct those compliments to like boomers or chronically offline people and you think they're gonna mistook it for insults then best#not to use it
