Canadian families will pay $1,065 more for groceries in 2023, report says
Canadians won't escape food inflation any time soon.
Food prices in Canada will continue to escalate in the new year, with grocery costs forecast to rise up to seven per cent in 2023, new research predicts.
For a family of four, the total annual grocery bill is expected to be $16,288 -- $1,065 more than it was this year, the 13th edition of Canada's Food Price Report released Monday said.
A single woman in her 40s -- the average age in Canada -- will pay about $3,740 for groceries next year while a single man the same age would pay $4,168, according to the report and Statistics Canada.
Food inflation is set to remain stubbornly high in the first half of 2023 before it starts to ease, said Sylvain Charlebois, lead author of the report and Dalhousie University professor of food distribution and policy.
"When you look at the current food inflation cycle we're in right now, we're probably in the seventh-inning stretch," he said in an interview. "The first part of 2023 will remain challenging ... but we're starting to see the end of this."
Multiple factors could influence food prices next year, including climate change, geopolitical conflicts, rising energy costs and the lingering effects of COVID-19, the report said.
Currency fluctuations could also play a role in food prices. A weaker Canadian dollar could make importing goods like lettuce more expensive, for example.
Earlier this year the loonie was worth more than 80 cents US, but it then dropped to a low of 72.17 cents US in October amid a strengthening U.S. dollar. It has hovered near the 74 cent mark in recent weeks, ending Friday at 74.25 cents US.
"The produce section is going to be the wild card," Charlebois said. "Currency is one of the key things that could throw things off early in the winter and that's why produce is the highest category."
Vegetables could see the biggest price spikes, with estimates pegging cost increases will rise as high as eight per cent, the report said.
In addition to currency risks, much of the produce sold in Canada comes from the United States, which has been struggling with extremely dry conditions.
"The western U.S., particularly California, has seen strong El Nino weather patterns and droughts and bacterial contaminations, and that's impacted our fruit and vegetable suppliers and prices," said Simon Somogyi, campus lead at the University of Guelph and professor at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.
"The drought is making the production of lettuce more expensive," he said. "It's reducing the crop size but it's also causing bacterial contamination, which is lessening the supply in the marketplace."
Prices in other key food categories like meat, dairy and bakery are predicted to soar up to seven per cent, the researchers found.
The Canadian Dairy Commission has approved a farm gate milk price increase of about 2.2 per cent, or just under two cents per litre, for Feb. 1, 2023.
"The increase for February is reasonable but it comes after the unprecedented increases in 2022, which are continuing to work their way through the supply chain," Charlebois said of the two price hikes of nearly 11 per cent combined in 2022.
Meanwhile, seafood is expected to increase up to six per cent, while fruit could increase up to five per cent, the report said.
Restaurant costs are expected to increase four to six per cent, less than supermarket prices, the report said.
Rising prices will push food security and affordability even further out of reach of Canadians a year after food bank use reached a record high, the report said.
The increasing reliance on food banks is expected to continue, with 20 per cent of Canadians reporting they will likely turn to community organizations in 2023 for help feeding their families, a survey included in the report found.
Use of weekly flyers, coupons, bulk buying and food rescuing apps also ticked up this year and is expected to continue growing in 2023, the report said.
"We're in the era now of the smart shopper," said Somogyi, also the Arrell Chair in the Business of Food.
"For certain generations, it's the first time that they've had to make a list, not impulse buy, read the weekly flyers, use coupons, buy in volume and freeze what they don't use."
Last year's report predicted food prices would increase five to seven per cent in 2022 -- the biggest jump ever predicted by the annual food price report.
Food costs actually far exceeded that forecast. Grocery prices were up 11 per cent in October compared with a year before while overall food costs were up 10.1 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.
"We were called alarmists," Charlebois said of the prediction that food prices could rise seven per cent in 2022. Critics called the report an "exaggeration," he said.
"You're always one crisis away from throwing everything out the window," Charlebois said. "We didn't predict the war in Ukraine, and that really affected markets."
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2022.

Shifting gradients: A time-lapse of the ever-changing sky palette
The sky is a master of disguise, shifting hues like an artist's palette. At dawn and dusk, it dons warm tones of orange and pink, as shorter blue wavelengths scatter away. Midday unveils its signature blue cloak, with shorter wavelengths reigning supreme. Yet, it's not just a daily routine; weather, pollution, and atmospheric whims add flair to its ever-changing canvas, painting moments of awe and wonder for all who gaze upon it.

How to Plan Your Perfect Himachal Tour Package
India has a rich and varied cultural legacy, defined by an astonishing range of languages, cultures, and religions. The country is blessed with some very stunning hill stations that provide a unique combination of natural wealth, panoramic grandeur, and peaceful leisure. Himachal Pradesh, one of India’s states, has much to offer its visitors. The state is endowed with numerous tourism sites that serve as dream destinations for many visitors to India. Himachal Tour packages include picturesque hill stations, snow-capped mountains, rivers, lakes, and valleys. The state has several amazing tourist attractions that you should see at least once in your life.
Himachal is well-known for its attractive hill stations, such as Shimla, Dalhousie, Manali, and Dharamshala, which attract visitors from all over the world. The state is also recognized for its adventurous sports, including rafting down the Beas River and paragliding near Kangra. Himachal is known as “Dev Bhoomi” because it boasts many Hindu temples that are regarded as sacred by Hindus all over the world. The state has some of the most beautiful vistas and lush green valleys.
Here are some suggestions for arranging your trip to Himachal Pradesh:
When to visit: Himachal Pradesh has a temperate climate with four seasons: summer (March-June), monsoon (July-September), autumn (October-November), and winter (December-February). You can visit this state at any time during these seasons, but avoid traveling during the winter because it gets cold here.
Plan your itinerary.
Shimla, Manali, Kullu-Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, and other sites are popular tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Tourists can tailor their itinerary based on their interests and preferences by visiting these locations at different seasons of the year. Or they can call Pluto tours, which provides the best Himachal trip packages from Delhi.
How long do you need?
If you wish to see the majority of Himachal Pradesh’s key attractions, you should plan on staying for at least two weeks or more, depending on your availability. Don’t forget that many destinations involve hiking, so make sure you leave enough time in case something goes wrong or someone gets hurt while hiking!
Ensure you have enough money:
Make sure you bring enough money for your Himachal trip because there are no ATMs in some locations, like Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti. Make sure your bank account is linked to internet banking so that funds may be transferred easily and without trouble during circumstances such as flight cancellations or illness while traveling.
Find out about the weather
Weather is a crucial consideration while traveling anywhere, especially if you are traveling with children or elderly people who may be unable to handle extreme weather conditions properly. Please check the weather before you go so that it does not ruin your holiday totally!
Bring at least one pair of walking shoes.
Himalayan trekking is a popular activity in Himachal Pradesh. You should always bring appropriate trekking shoes, especially if you are going on an overnight journey or in the winter when it is really cold up in the mountains. If you do not have trekking shoes with you, you can rent them from a travel agency that provides such services.
Interact with the locals.
The people are kind and would gladly provide you with all the information you require. If you want to see things through their eyes, interacting with them is a smart option because it will help you comprehend their culture and traditions.
Stay safe while driving.
Himachal Pradesh is well-known for its picturesque splendor, so it’s no wonder that most visitors come to enjoy nature. However, it would be beneficial if you exercised certain precautions while driving on roads with steep slopes or abrupt turns. It is also advisable to avoid visiting remote locations at night or after sunset. Stay safe, especially if driving alone!
Be conscious of the culture.
Before visiting a new location, it is critical to understand the local culture and traditions. Despite being connected to the outside world, the people of Himachal Pradesh have managed to preserve their traditions and cultures. You might notice this whether you go sightseeing or shopping at local markets. Make sure to respect their culture and traditions as well.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh for Snow
Tumblr media
The best time to visit Himachal Pradesh for snow is during the winter months, the winter in this part of India is within the bounds of late December to early March. During this time, the entire state fills into a nook of winter as it starts taking the shape of a snow capped mountain alongside picturesquely beautiful scenery. If you are dreaming of a snowy vacation, this is the perfect time to plan your trip to Himachal Pradesh.
Actually, Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie will be really snow-covered in these months. You will be able to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and making a snowman. The months of January and February have the maximum possibility of snowfall, which is the peak month for tourists who love to see snow. Remember, temperatures below freezing might occur, so take warm clothes with you to keep yourself warm.
While winters are considered the best time for travelling in Himachal Pradesh due to snow, one needs to remember that some high altitude areas may have small accessibility due to heavy snowfall. Roads are slippery and may be closed at some passes. If you are planning to visit during this time, then check the weather forecast and road conditions in advance. A few of the challenges include disruption of communications, closed roads, and inaccessibility to public utilities; however, this white snowy magical landscape along with unique winter experiences truly makes it a time to remember while exploring Himachal Pradesh.

Catching up
The fact that I can't keep up with a blog, suggests our lives are busy! There is a lot of catching up to do.
Wednesday evening, July 17 we took John & Emma out for a sail. Although it was light wind, it was a nice evening to be on the water, and I think they enjoyed themselves.
Friday night, we were packing and getting organized to leave for a few days. Saturday morning we left, along with a bunch of other boats for the commodore's cruise to ABYC. The wind was light, and we sailed for a couple of hours, but eventually turned on the motor.
Isaac, Elise and Lana drove down and joined us for the night. Lana slept fairly well, but the folks on the pier were determined to party until after 4:30 am, which really didn't impress me very much. Thankfully, Lana didn't hear them back in the aft cabin, with the fan and white noise, whereas I couldn't shut them out. (I need to pack earplugs for times like this)
The next morning, despite a lousy sleep, we had breakfast together, and a relaxing Sunday. Elise & Isaac went for a bike ride, while Lana had a nap. It's good to be lazy, and not do much for a change.
Really enjoyed our time at ABYC, connecting with friends.
Mid day Sunday, ich we headed out towards the Toronto Islands, and landed at IYC, which we had never stayed at before. We enjoyed the pool, and had a good meal at the restaurant with Pat & Doug, Karl and Andrea. Mystic and Celtic Knot stayed two nights, so we were able to 'lean into' the vacation mode, visiting the pool again, and having cocktails before dinner. It was a nice mini-vacation.
Monday morning, Mystic headed out the Western gap, raised her sails despite the flat water and the light winds. Interestingly, we managed to sustain a solid 3-5 knots of boat speed, and only one tack to Oakville. We took advantage of the light conditions to do some odd jobs on the boat and thoroughly enjoyed our passage.
We were pleased to learn via communication with OYS's commodore, that their visitor dock was open, despite their roaming docks that swept the club not only a week ago. We were really impressed to find many repairs done, and most boats not even showing the scars from last weeks misfortune.
We went out for dinner with Kyle & Lori, after getting ourselved settled. It was so good to see them again!!!
After a leisurely stroll back to the club, we had a drink on the club patio, after admiring some recent renovations, that have added so much to their already lovely club-house.
We met some of their friends, and chatted about where to go next. Our thought was to head south, however we do not have our passports with us, so going State side isn't an option. We wanted to try something new, and had our eye on Newport, but local knowledge suggested that the entry was not deep enough, despite the info in Ports, so we were thinking 50 Point instead.
After a good night's sleep, our usual coffee and some studying of windfinder, we left the Mediterranian style tie up, and headed out the river. We raised both sails, and figured we would go wherever the wind wanted to take us. Comfortably, that was going to be 50 Point, or Port Dalhousie. An hour or so later, Jeff started to notice on the radar, a weather system headed our way. It looked as though it would pass more to the north, so we were not very concerned, but another 30 minutes later, and that same weather system was headed right in our path. We decided to drop the sails, and close up the enclosure, in an attempt to not get wet. Within about 30 minutes, the winds were picking up, white caps forming, and we were enveloped into a squall! Yikes..... what the heck were we doing out there!? and how did we not see this in our preparations?!?
Jeff did a great job pointing Mystic straight into the wind/waves. The squall lasted longer than we though. It turned into a full out storm, with lightening, and heavy downpour. We didn't see any hail, or ships, thankfully. Mystic kept us safe. Our electronics worked beautifully (although the wind speed we don't think was accurate - neighbouring boat claimed that he saw 50 knot gusts, and sustained 35-45 knots). Who knows..... We will have to investigate at some point, although maybe ignorance is bliss??
We ended up landing in StoneyCreek's Newport Yacht Club. We were able to make a run for it, when the sky began to brighten, and the winds settled. A fellow boater who was also caught in the storm, caught us on their pump out wall.
For the remainder of the afternoon, storm cells kept passing by, bringing wind, rain, then sunshine. The dock master was very welcoming and showed us around the quaint club, with lovely new facilities. (they have their own dredger for the channel, which keeps it at 7' throughout the summer)
With the unsettled weather, we opted not to take out the bikes, and just reset The stormy passage took more energy than one might think, but we are glad to be relaxing in this 'new to us' port. It feels as though we have discovered a new little hideaway.

OLD DURLAND LAND The original homestead is long and lost from this land, first cleared by William Durland in the 1800s. Just down the trail, I spotted his stone cellar walls, but any sign of the house he built upon them is a dead and distant memory. His barn, however, still stands – if only just barely. It housed the hay and equipment for several generations after Mr. Durland, but the last of those folks have gone and left the past to its own devices. Rusty remnants linger inside, including a Massey-Ferguson square baler that I'd date to the late 1960s or so. His field isn't far from turning back to forest, a slow reclamation of nature turning back the clock. But no one will be reversing the downward spiral of the one remaining structure. It seems almost more hardworn in the blinding spring sunlight, a hundred years of taking everything the weather could give it. Hurricanes, blizzards, gale force winds and snowload enough to crush a lesser building. It'll all go soon like a pile of twigs, rotting back to the place it was raised.
