GF had never seen Steven Universe before and i was in the mood for a rewatch since i havent watched most of the episodes since they aired so we started watching it and ita actually so lovely to both revisit a series that i have a lot of nostalgia for AND see her experience everything about it for the first time without any spoilers or interactions with the fandom. Truly the best way to relive the story

it's like. louis attempted to tell this story to daniel the first time, broke down, and attacked him before he could finish it.

and then decades later he's convinced himself that it was leaving the story unresolved that's holding him back from living his life fully now. so he invites daniel back again. and louis is sitting poised and put together, confident in his ability to recite his history in a pretty, poignant, neat little narrative that will resolve all the guilt and yearning and emptiness inside of him. that if he can just tell a compelling, satisfying story, maybe it will actually be that, and not the life he lived through, with all the pitfalls of his own failures lurking inside.

and then season 1 ends with him once again being forced to confront that the story he wants to imagine and the life he actually lived aren't the same thing. the boundaries around his narrative are shredded and he's left exposed, and subsequently able to face his past for the first time since that original interview. and you think, you think, "well this is it. they've crossed the event horizon. there's no use hiding the truth anymore, not after it's come flooding out into the open like this"

and then season 2 opens. not only is it back to the original, practiced distance, we now have armand literally enforcing that distance. a man sitting at the table who's interjections must be disregarded, an intentional interruption to the flow of the story. he doesn't exist to aid or add detail, he exists to distract louis when he gets too deep in the story. the only time we do get louis allowing any deep truth to come out is when armand leaves the room.

it's like. louis wants a story that's true, and the truth is what he's convinced will leave him satisfied. armand wants a story that will satisfy louis, to the extent louis will accept it's true.

new casting!! and interesting little details in the character blurbs:

nothing unexpected for faile, melaine, or rhuarc, but brief discussion on bair and melindhra below!

firstly, it sounds like bair has absorbed amys. it makes sense to consolidate wise ones, but given that amys was always kinda our "main" wise one, i wasn't expecting her to be the one axed!

naturally, my first thought was: sir that was my emotional support older aiel throuple :( i'm bummed! and also surprised since amys/rhuarc/lian seemed like an obvious Surprise Tool To Help Us Later re: showing how aiel polyamory works. but we could still get an example aiel polycule even if no amys! just put any 3 aiel together and it's fine. or maybe bair subs in for amys here too. (although if so it would be doubly odd to name the merged character bair instead of amys since the character would be like 90% amys 10% bair. maybe amys is too similar a name to some other character i'm not thinking of atm and that's the only reason they went with bair instead.)

the mention of bair as the "eldest" wise one could also hint at no sorilea in showverse, unless it only means that bair is the eldest wise one we have this season and sorilea could still be introduced later. but i don't think there's a specific need for sorilea, so i wouldn't be surprised at all if she never shows up. we're starting to get to the portion of the series where RJ went crazy with supporting characters and the show can have one character swallow up like 7 other characters at once lmao

second, the biggest change here is melindhra's backstory as a malkieri survivor. seems like a sign that we might start digging more into lan as his own character this season, which would be nice! and @butterflydm noted that if show!aiel have taken in some malkieri, that would explain why the aiel are such big fans of lan in a more concrete way than we get in the books.

now the question: what about mat? a couple of options.

melindhra is a 2-season character and mat joins up with rand's crew by the end of s3, then gets involved with and betrayed by melindhra in s4.

the betrayal story gets transposed onto lan instead, either this season or in s4 (highly doubt they'd have a romantic involvement, or at least not one that lan reciprocates, so it could instead be a platonic connection over their homeland)

as of now, i'd lean towards #2 feeling more likely since it would keep melindhra a more focused character, just having her stick with lan narratively/emotionally instead of ALSO being involved with mat. there's also the tuon of it all; mat is going to need a loooot of time to develop his endgame romance in a way that's believable (sideeyes the books), so depending on when tuon gets introduced, we may not have time for mat to be dicking around with non-endgame love interests (not that i'd expect him to be actively romancing tuon by s4, but still, IF they meet in tanchico in s3, it might be better to keep mat single and available and thinking about her in s4 to get that long-ass journey to believable endgame love started).

oh and finally, i took note of this blurb about the show at the end of the press release, in the context of the alleged rumors reddit loves to be hysterical about, that amazon is waiting until s3 airs to decide the show's future:

obviously amazon is going to highly talk up their own show in an official press release, but still, this doesn't sound like the kinds of things they would say about a show they're on the fence about continuing! it's worded in a way that feels like they consider WOT a long-term investment and in company with ROP and fallout. so i think that if those rumors are true (who knows if they are), it's more likely that the decision they're weighing isn't whether or not to greenlight s4, but rather how many total seasons they want to shoot for, and then s4 production kickoff would naturally be tied up with that because rafe & co can't start writing s4 without knowing whether it's the penultimate season, the halfway point, or somewhere in between.

As of now yes but I'm open to the concept of expanding it! When we're not working on s2 episodes anymore I suppose that can be one of the options on the table. Lotsa possibilities! Right now, though, it's been really tough working on production of episodes and fitting in time to work on the Exit Interviews too (hoping to have the last three out before s2 returns!). So not in any particular rush to add more to our plate atm regarding non-episode content. But we'll see what's drawing us later down the line.

Bestie kicks off with a simple dark blue sweater and light grey sweatpants, paired with white sneakers. Not a fan of the colours, but does look super comfy. Bonus points for lending the outfit to his soulmate later on.💖

Not a fan of the colour combinations and multi-stripes, but the hoodie under the jacket with pulled up hood is giving cool apocalyptic, gonna-find-the-love-of-my-life-in-a-rainstorm-at-night-in-the-forest vibes.👌

Building off your argument that Ted isn't going to go back to Kansas, he was constantly correcting his mother this episode with regards to British terms. Where before he was the outsider who didn't understand Britishisms, now he is the native who uses the terms instinctively to the point where he gets annoyed when they're used wrong. Sounds like he's acclimatized to England.

Yes!!! I was thinking that a couple weeks back too when Ted first uses "football" instinctively and then comments on how natural it's become. He's reached a point where he's both using that terminology as a matter of course ("Some of us have a football team to coach!") as well as teaching others (here's how the dials on the oven work). (Sidenote: I'm not sure what to do with Dottie's tea comment yet. Not even sure atm whether I read it as sincere or sarcastic, but regardless, I think it's a potentially useful detail next to Ted willingly drinking tea in "Sunflowers." That was another version of acclimation on his part.) Now, combine this verbal/dietary acclimation with our opening where every previously negative interaction Ted had with the community has been flipped to show that they now adore him -- seen most strikingly through the "wanker" guy and, throughout this season, the pub trio supporting him at training -- and if they do send Ted back to Kansas it's really going to read as that Mary Poppins situation of, "He arrives to brighten everyone else's lives and then leaves. Why do you care what he needs? He's just a narrative tool."

To further add to this I can't help but think about the long-term structure of Ted's life now that we know Beard's backstory. We're told that, like his time here in Richmond, Ted helped Beard, forgave him, gave him another chance, and ultimately gave him a life. If we look at Beard's situation as a microcosm of the whole show, it seems significant that Ted does not leave Beard behind. That was not a situation -- a situation we're worried about getting now -- where Ted played the part of emotional coach and then sent Beard on his way, far from him as he's no longer needed. Instead, we get the opposite. Beard becomes his best friend, a staple of his life, and continues to help Ted in turn. By waiting until the penultimate episode to reveal the roots of Beard's loyalty, the show has ensured that the focus is on their equal standing and how Beard has likewise benefited Ted over the years: helping him see that wanting to win isn't a bad thing, trying to provide support through his anxiety, recognizing Ted's tells and informing their new community of what to look for (Nate, during the divorce arc: "Is he okay?" Beard: "No!") Beard could have been a minor, flatter character who popped out of the woodwork just to say, "Ted Lasso changed my life for the better, extraordinarily so, and he is The Best Man anyone could ever meet" (which, frankly, would have made Ted a flatter character too) and then gone on his way, having succeeded in the narrative function of reminding the viewer that this is Ted's sole role in the story: coaching others to be their best selves while pushing his own needs aside.

Instead, Beard becomes the cornerstone of Ted's support system. Ted doesn't leave him behind, he permanently integrates him into his life.

What's a microcosm of this microcosm? Ted Lasso does the same thing with Trent. Does he go off into the writing world once Ted helps him realize what he truly wants in life, his story concluded, never to be seen again? To quote Beard, "No!" Trent comes back and, significantly, Ted doesn't pull any metaphorical Mary Poppins arguments along the lines of, "I'm done all I can for you. It's time for you to move on." He eagerly invites Trent into their Richmond circle when no one else will (I'm currently working on a meta of Trent's first scene of Season 3 because OH BOY IS THERE A LOT) and Trent stays, not simply writing his book but becoming a member of the family. Surely there's a pattern here: The people Ted helps don't leave him, but rather become core additions to his life that enrich his own outlook and understanding of himself.

I'm not saying I'm going to toss Ted Lasso in the bin if we get the Kansas ending, but I AM saying you all will have to suffer through a dissertation length meta on my blog about why that was a bad choice lol

Many moons ago, when (I think it was) the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was airing on TV, I decided it might be fun to join some mailing lists dedicated to the show, so I'd have more people to talk about the show with. (Mailing lists were pre-social media vehicles for fandom, somewhere between USENET and MySpace; imagine a chain of comments on a Tumblr post, but it's sent to you in email.) It definitely let me talk to more people about a show that I loved, but it also taught me that online fandom can take just as easily as it gives. [SPOILERS if you're just starting to watch the show, i think it might be having a minor resurgence atm.]

It wasn't a terribly negative experience. I didn't get bullied or even have my ideas shit on. That season had the show's typical mystery of what's the deal with this season's Big Bad and how are Buffy and the Scoobies going to defeat them, but it also had the mystery of Buffy's previously unseen sister, Dawn. Where did she come from? Howcome all the characters act like she's been there all along when she totally hasn't been? Et cetera, et cetera, et wtf.

There had been cryptic hints dropped in the previous season (Little Miss Muffet, counting down from 7-3-0), but they were very cryptic. Babylon 5 had concluded not too long ago, and HBO's mainstreaming of the "tv show as novel" concept had not quite kicked into gear yet, so nerdy fannish brains were hungry for a well-planned-out tv narrative to sink their teeth into. This mailing list was full of speculation, sometimes based on those aforementioned hints, sometimes based on the bits of Latin and German text seen in the opening credits (the show is full of mystical tomes), to all those sorts of background details and clever quips that supposedly have hidden meanings. You know how it can get.

Of course I had my own theories, which I do not remember. That's suspiciously convenient, because I do remember that they were wrong. (Good job, super ego. You saved me from an embarrassing memory for once. That doesn't mean we're okay about all the other stuff.) Whatever my wrong predictions were, it really bugged me when they turned out to be wrong. And before they were proved to be wrong, it also bugged me when I would watch the show and someone else's theory, usually one I didn't like so much, would pop into my head. Oh, that one character did that thing that supposedly proves that such-and-such will happen. There was a mention of that so-called clue that means Dawn will turn out to be whatever annoying thing that one poster said that I didn't like. My pet theory being wrong was just the stink on top of the turd pie.

So at the end of that season, I thought, this deeper involvement in fandom has made the show less fun to watch. And that sucked, because I really liked that show. I'd found it at the beginning, and my enjoyment of it had grown from a very simplistic "hey, there's an attractive lady kicking vampires" to a real appreciation of all the character growth and the good acting and the smart metaphors and the playing with tropes, all the stuff that makes a tv show good. And one of my best friends had recently gotten into the show, though they were still catching up via my obsessive video taping (a lost art, folks). All that enjoyment was diminished, if only a bit, by my participation is a particular aspect of fandom. I unsubbed from the mailing lists and decided I wouldn't go down that path again.

Obviously, I didn't completely give up on online fandom, because here I am. But I have tried to be much more careful in how I engage with that fandom. Speculation isn't for me. It might be for you. Digging into behind-the-scenes details, and examining statements that creators have made about a story is not for me. It might be for you. What is for me is finding those stories--whatever medium they may be told in--that appeal to me, taking them in, letting myself get lost in the details that catch my attention, talking about those things with friends, and occasionally posting something here. Similar vibes seem to attract each other here. Most of the interaction is just a like, which I can interpret as appreciation for the thing that I enjoy or maybe my rambling about it, and that's nice. When folks do reply with more than a like, it's almost always thoughtful and written in a chill, conversational way.

I reckon the moral is, it's worthwhile to notice how your interaction with fandom affects your enjoyment of the art that brought you there in the first place, and it can be helpful to tailor that interaction so that you get the most positive and the least negative out of it.

have you ever thought about how now that osomatsu san is coming out in july we probably wont hav another episode set during spring? no more cherry blossoms for poor oso unless they make a new season or have an obscene amout of episodes in this one :V

if we're following patterns: season 1 had spring and no summer, season 2 had summer and no spring, and season 3 had spring and no summer, so season 4 is likely to have summer and no spring.

i think with the new writing direction it would be thematic to HAVE spring episodes though, considering the comment about it being the year of the snake and how osomatsu-san as a show is going to "shed it's skin" and be "reborn," and spring is the perfect season for that.

so far the narrative of osomatsu-san has been "we don't want to change, but the world is changing without us" and because season 4 is meant to introduce "modernity" to it, there is once again change happening but we're currently unsure if this change involves the matsuno's or not.

i think spring would be a great writing tool for the show but it's not necessarily needed to make a point. obviously there's no way to know atm where the direction of osomatsu-san WILL go from here, but the characters themselves have arcs that narratively need completed. i'd say season 3 wrapped up nyaa's, for example.

So I think you might be referring to this post about Shigaraki's s6 Fit Of All Time. The spiritual TL;DR of those tags is: I know this version of Shigaraki is a character who has reached Peak Manipulated, Tragic Story Potential, but his look is lowkey fire anyway.

(A note on the outfit: I stand by the fact that it is the Fit Of All Time. Simple. Classic. Very very cool. I overthought about it when I first saw it because I <3 overthinking about MHA and had a small Moment about Shigaraki reaching this final-ish villainous form and immediately donning a hero's cape, and the possible implications of this. Plus, and this is more of a USAmerican view I think, but a red cape is like The Superhero Accessory, because Superman (and Thor. And Doctor Strange. But mostly Superman.))

So. For context, I'm halfway-ish through Season 6 atm. It's me and my pockets full of spoilers against the world, but there have been Several Things that no amount of spoilers could have prepared me for, Shigaraki being one of them. I mean. TALK ABOUT A CORRUPTION ARC.

The thing about Shiggy is that, by the time we meet him, he has already had his traditional 'corruption arc' when AFO found him as a child and manipulated him into becoming a villain. When we talk about corruption arcs in literature, we're usually talking about this kind of moral decay (pun intended). It's the movement from 'hero' to 'villain' (or, in Shigaraki's case, 'innocent child' to 'supervillain successor.' And, yes, I know he decayed his family before he met AFO, but I'm really not going to assign any moral blame there for obvious reasons).

But Shigaraki has also had numerous other negative character arcs before we met him. He starts his life perhaps not with a happy, normal family, but with a family and a house and a dog. By the time we are introduced to him in s1, he's been living in the shadows, is isolated emotionally and physically from the people around him, and has garbage interpersonal skills and relationships. Even his name has been 'corrupted,' from the name of a hero (Shimura) to that of a villain (Shigaraki). So, it seems like Shigaraki has undergone every possible negative/corruption arc long before s6.

AND YET.

The s1 -> s6 Shigaraki journey isn't a corruption of morals or circumstances. It's a corruption of wills. When we meet Shigaraki, he's a whiny, impulsive 'manchild' (I don't remember who called him that after USJ, but it was iconic and they were correct. It might have been All Might. You go All Might). But in spite of, or maybe because of, his manchild-ness, you can definitely see that Shigaraki has willpower. He's bossy. He's actually kind of bratty. He pretty much stomps his foot and expects people to comply with his demands. If he doesn't like something, he's like, "Ew, Kurogiri, get rid of it/them this instant." AFO definitely has an unhealthy amount of influence over him at this point, but Shigaraki still plays a very active (though often unsuccessful) role in his own schemes (the Nomu attack in Hosu City, for example).

And, after AFO's arrest at Kamino, we actually see Shigaraki's will get stronger. He might flounder a little at first, lost without AFO's direct supervision, but eventually he's forced to start making real decisions for and about the League. This character growth reaches its apex when he takes over the Paranormal Liberation Front. (Note: red cape again. Grabs him by the shoulders and shakes him, etc.)

But THEN. Season 6. The literal battle of wills. If AFO prevails, he will have destroyed pretty much the only thing Shigaraki has left. It's like. The ultimate corruption arc. Corruption of the self. BTW in case it wasn't clear I want to roundhouse kick AFO into another dimension. I genuinely like most of the villains in MHA but he is the Emperor Palpatine of this story and it shows. [MANGA SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH] I really, really wanted Shigaraki to throw him down the proverbial reactor shaft Darth Vader-style, but from what I understand that ship has sailed. Boooooo.

So now s6 Shigaraki is walking a very thin line between the success of this final corruption arc, that of his autonomy, and finally breaking some aspect of AFO's control over his entire life. It is a very, very thin line, because even if AFO can't control him anymore, he's the reason Shigaraki is WHO he is and WHERE he is (and WHAT he is, if we get into the whole Nomu-ification storyline).

So, yeah. Walking a very thin line. But at least he looks good doing it!! Wearing a disembodied hand on your face is OUT, wearing a tattered red cape is IN. What does it symbolize? Shigaraki personifying what he blames heroes for--destroying society--while dressing up as one of them? Shigaraki becoming his own hero by finally 'achieving his dream' of being powerful enough to destroy the world that hurt him? Foreshadowing that Shigaraki, wearing a hero's literal costume, and AFO are in some way opposed now? The author wanting to draw a really cool cape??? Who knows!! But I love it sm.

sure, thanks for asking! my top favorite characters don't necessarily correspond to my top favorite media so it's great we're differentiating them.

top 10 favorite media (in no particular order):

never let me go by kazuo ishiguro (novel) — this one is a slow burn, a bit heartbreaking. I still don't know how to describe the feeling the story left me with. it's like... contemplative, and bittersweet? there is also a movie version as well; watch it if you want to see andrew garfield screaming.

orpheus and eurydice (greek myth) — what can I say? it's tragic, but the love was there. it's tragic because there was love. I like any media that touches on their story. hadestown is probably the most popular, but I'd like to recommend eurydice by aucoin and ruhl.

the good place (tv show) — funny, genuinely good story, has a lot of heart. love kristen bell in it. there's also a podcast from the cast talking about the behind the scenes.

you're the worst (tv show) — tbh I think it's just because one of the characters reminds me of my ex, so some of the scenes felt extremely personal lmao. also, I watched the season 3 finale during a breakup, which is the worst time to watch that scene. but it's genuinely a fascinating show about "terrible" people getting into relationships. tackles some heavy topics, has some dark humor. season 4 was kind of a mess, but the way they ended this show in season 5 is exactly how I think it should've ended.

the world ends with you (video game) — the ideal way to experience this game is to play it as a teenager or young adult, like specifically at that age range (but later on is fine too).

nier automata (video game) — love when video games talk to me (the player). love games whose story can only exist as a game. did you know you can go through the amusement park level without killing a single machine except for the boss fight? also, there's a youtube video of the english voice actors reading the concert script.

gravity rush (video game) — it's a shame the studio behind this was shut down. it was such a unique game to me, and the world building is fascinating. falling around as kat and exploring the world felt relaxing and fun.

shinsekai yori (anime/novel) — this was originally a novel (there's a translation here) but I first experienced it through the anime adaptation. it's not the kind of story that's my favorite because I watched it a bunch of times. I only watched it once or twice, but the story still stayed with me, and it made me contemplate on the consequences of empathy. I watched it at the same time as psycho pass, and tbh I think that's a pretty good way to watch it. you appreciate both series more when comparing them. the novel translation I linked is pretty good too.

dishonored (video game) — 11/10 art direction, stealth mechanics, world building. it's just a really fun game. I wish fortiche (studio that animated the arcane series) could make a dishonored animation, but alas

link click (donghua) — might be recency bias since I'm currently obsessed with this show, although I've been watching it since 2021. but it's such a fun... experience, I would say? the story itself is great, but the experience of engaging with it makes me feel like johnny truant from house of leaves sometimes. idk, I'm kinda insane about this show atm. but I think that's the ideal experience; you gotta be insane about this show to get the most out of it

edmund and lucy pevensie (chronicles of narnia, c.s. lewis) — technically cheating since this is two characters. whatever. they're the heart of this series, to me

emma woodhouse (emma, jane austen) — tbh I need to read more austen books besides emma and pride and prejudice. but emma is really so wonderfully flawed and entertaining. she thinks she's soooo clever. I like that about her. also this book is such a delight because it's just a bunch of characters who think they're clever at the regency era social game. plus the movie version stars anya taylor-joy. she's great. I love her

namine (kingdom hearts) — she's in my url, after all. re:com was actually my first kh game. kh can't end without sora thanking her

kisa tachibana (jack jeanne) — otome heroine, but it's important to realize that I think she's a weird theater girl (affectionate) who heavily uses avoidance (through theater!) as a coping mechanism. you will not get this from the game except for like, one scene. there are some hints of this in the side materials. but yeah this is like. a very specific interpretation of her, probably not even the intended interpretation for her. also, she's got gender thoughts that I wish she'd interrogate for herself, but she won't, but that's what also makes her interesting imo

shen yuan (svsss) — if there's ever a guy you'd want to put their brain under a microscope, it's him

cheng xiaoshi (link click) — studio lan researched how to create "sincere guy you'd want to protect" and perfected it in cheng xiaoshi. big heart, an actual angel. but he's actually really clever, if people would just let him exercise that cleverness

kaneki ken (tokyo ghoul) — another character whose arc is "kindness leads to tragedy." hm. (also: I like haise and his relationship with arima. this is important for you to understand what I like about kaneki)

lelouch vi brittania (code geass) — I was this close to putting cg in my top 10 media list, especially for the poetry of its ending. but tbh it's the characters that make it great. some aspects of the show did not age well. but anyway. he's one of the best characters to have been created in anime imo, but most people nowadays know him from the soup store meme

wanderer (genshin impact) — genshin's writing fluctuates in quality, but they truly knocked it out of the park with wanderer. and his story isn't even over yet! (he's got the albedo/durin plotline and dottore plotline to follow up on)

shuichi saihara (danganronpa V3) — (major spoilers for the game incoming) favorite dr protagonist. actually feels like I'm a detective when playing him. love the trust/doubt and truth/lie theme going on. dr protagonist who doesn't push for hope as the answer against despair. dr protagonist who lies and commits perjury in court. dr protagonist whose game plan was to ask everyone in the final trial to commit group suicide with him to end the danganronpa franchise. we don't know if he's actually a "real" person, or a scripted one. he's great, but you have to go through DR1 and SDR2 to truly appreciate him imo (you cannot play V3 as your first danganronpa game)

honorable mention to yin yu from tgcf. he couldn't make it to the top 10, but he's up there. tgcf is my least favorite of the three mxtx novels, but yin yu is one of the realest and most human characters mxtx has written, imho.

i actually first heard about it after the first or second trailer for s1 dropped! idk how and when exactly that was (it's been a while) but i remember thinking 'oh i gotta watch this, it looks funny and has david tennant in it'. guess what. i didn't watch it until s2 came out and the entire internet was screaming about it. so i finally caved, asked for my friends amazon account (bc she had a prime account) and gave it a shot – the rest is history.
