Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?  I was wrong in my 2024 roundup post—I wrote 25k more words this year despite having 10 fewer fics. Which I did NOT expect. I figured I was trucking along to make my usual ~270k, but I forgot about The Secret Fics lol.

What’s your own favorite story of the year?  I think I have to go with Body and Soul(mate), which I'm just so so proud of. I love how it came out and I think it's really original.

Did you complete your writing goals from last year?  The Goal: My goal is to have a similar mix of fics as least year, and also to write my first collaboration with @cricketnationrise, which will be a long multichap. First part, pretty close. I wrote more multichaps (21% vs 15%) this year, which meant fewer fics in total. Second part, oops. Cricket and I have both been busy, but the hockey fic lives!! We'll get to it eventually!

Do you have any writing goals for the New Year? I can't believe I'm gonna say this but... write more original fiction. See below for more on that. Fanfic wise... finally finish some of the planned stories I've had kicking around for a while.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I submitted a pitch for an anthology, was accepted, and wrote my first original story! I had a lot of fun with it and I think I'll purse more next year. Idk if I'm ready for a whole novel and trying to get (more) published, but we'll see.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Even though it's numbers have come up since publishing, I'm still gonna go with The Impossible Soul, aka my Westworld-esque android/human AU.

Most fun story to write: Probably Body and Soul(mate). Figuring out all the body swaps and soulmate lore was a lot of fun and the whole thing just flowed so well.

Biggest disappointment: Why do I keep this question? I hate complaining publicly. 😂 My biggest disappointment is that I sometimes let fandom drama/trends/popularity make me feel bad. Being mad because a fandom loves X type of fic doesn't help anyone.

Biggest surprise: I'm not sure I really had any big surprises this year. Biggest surprise in my stats was that my percent of explicit works is way up—T used to be my most-used rating. Part of that is publishing fewer one-shots, since those tend to be T for me, whereas a long fic is more likely to be E.

Coming soon/planned for 2024: It's a little depressing how so many of these are the same as last year. Hence the resolution above, I guess.

Hi!! I am a big fan of Chalastor and love reading fics about them. I saw that you’ve created some but I kinda don’t know where to start? Do I start with Riddle of Magic? That’s what I thought but then I saw you created other works so I was wondering if they were connected in some way?

Hello! Thanks for your question! 🍷

Regarding my works, I really prefer to let fans interact with them however they want to - you can either read Riddle of Magic as its own story with no engagement to the other shorts, or you can take every story I produce as something within a shared multiverse. A #riddleverse, if that sounds interesting!

One of the critiques I've seen for Riddle is that it's desperately long - as of this post it is the longest Charlastor story on AO3 by over 150,000 words.

What can I say, there's a lot I wanted to explore with these two hahaha!

I definitely understand such a saga could be intimidating for someone just wanting to settle in for a quicker read! If I had to recommend a reading list incorporating all of my current fanfics, it would probably be this one (if you preferred to go for some kind of larger, unified narrative):

The last short in this anthology is the prequel chapter/short story for the Riddle of Magic novel (lol it's so long, my goodness), and there is a side story for that series as well. I would recommend reading ROM before the spinoff miniseries, since Relative Horizons features a particular version of Charlie and Alastor who play their own part in ROM, but it's your choice how you want to engage it - reading the short story on its own won't spoil anything.

But if you want to read Riddle of Magic on its own and skip the other works (which aren't necessary reading to understand that plotline), you can read the series here!

There's a couple more short stories I hope to squeeze in before I have to pivot to my original manuscript White Soul, but we'll see what the future holds for my schedule. At this point, I still work full-time while writing is on the side. Will something change? Who knows?

Ok, I am awake, have eaten breakfast, drunk my coffee, and now am sitting down to catch up on GMMTV 2025! From the excited chat I've seen in various places, I'm thinking this is gonna be good, but we'll see!

I'm just randomly clicking on the trailers, so no real order here.

Ticket to Heaven - Ooof, wow. What a start. Ok, I am super excited for GeminiFourth to be working on something more dramatic and adult, because I think they're going to do an incredible job. P'Aof did amazing work with them in Moonlight Chicken, so I think he's a great director to take them through such big lead roles. And this looks like a really powerful story. At the same time, I am someone who has experienced direct harm to my family from the Catholic church (abuse leading to someone taking their life), so even the trailer was very emotional and triggering for me. I will likely try to watch, but will have to be careful for my mental health.

Girls Rule - a lesbian Only Friends! Fabulous, I'm in. OF wasn't my favorite, but it was hella entertaining, and I am here for letting lesbians be messy too.

Do we need to start a counter for "uggggh branded pairs are going to ruin this" posts? Cuz I know they're coming. 😂

Holy shit! This cast!!! I am just reeling. Also, can we talk about Gawin & Joss being paired again? Oh, the whiners are going to be so mad. But I love it. P'Aof being a senior director of content production is having a clear impact.

Omg, a pseudo-dark Pond who is actually a huge dork. The plot of this isn't super amazing for me, it's a premise that's been done a lot, but as always, that PondPhuwin chemistry is always so damn good.

Whale Store - more GL, yay! MilkLove are having a busy 2025. The plot isn't super compelling for me, but I like that they are offering such different GLs next year, so we can have more options for what different people resonate with.

Cat for Cash - My babies. Something very different from Heart Killers, for sure. Lol, and of course they made Khaotung cry in the trailer. And Satang getting to do something a little different for him!

Um. Look I love FirstKhaotung. Of course I'm gonna watch it. Do I love the talking cats? Not really. Just not quite my jam. Hoping that's a minimally used part of the series. But the acting should be stellar.

MU-TE-LUV - Ok, I have to admit I was feeling incredibly confused until I realized it was an anthology. I can be slow sometimes. I do love a ton of the people appearing in this, so it could be fun.

Memoir of Rati - More GreatInn! I did expect this. Love that we're going historical. Ahhhhh, AouBoom!!!!

Oh, this one is going to hurt, and I am going to have to watch it.

That Summer - A lead for WinnySatang! Oh, yay, I'm happy for them. Ah, the good ole amnesia trope. But it's actually working for me here. And we get a proper love story with Mond! On paper this is one that shouldn't necessarily excite me, but the trailer sold me, I'm here for it.

A Dog and a Plane - TayNew era continues! I am already loving this. Lolol, New's boyfriend cheating with Poon, oh this is fabulous. Oh, are we getting MarcPoon enemies to lovers?!

100% immediately sold, give it to me now.

Boys in Love - Of course, gotta get at least one school series. Pretty standard fare, but a very cute and charismatic cast. And PoddPapang sides for us older fans! Though I am guessing it will be like the teacher romance in 23.5, so mostly crumbs sadly.

Love You Teacher - PerthSanta! Woot woot! And they're in adult jobs, yay. Oh, interesting that we're getting an established couple, that's so rare! Hmm, our teachers are a little bit kinky and I approve. Wait, we're getting two amnesia plots next year? I mean, I think Satang's character is faking it a bit? But still, this is funny to me.

Hmm, you know what? The plot is a little odd, but I feel like there could be a really sweet core here of what it really means to love someone and take care of them when they're having hard times. And honestly if anyone was going to be a believable child in an adult's body, Santa was a brilliant pick.

Dare You to Death - Ok, I literally just gasped. Am I getting a JoongDunk mystery/thriller!?!?! Lol, "so we can work better together, come live with me", very smooth Captain, very smooth. Wait... are we getting cheeky Joong back? I haven't seen him since 2 Moons 2!

Burnout Syndrome - Ooh, OffGun in a more mature series again! And P'Nuchy!!! I had her on my bingo card for last year, I've wanted her to come back to direct for so looooong! Oh, this makes me so happy. And Dew coming in to dip his toe into the BL waters. I am very intrigued by this one.

Wu - Hmmm, fortune teller and string of fate...interesting. I'm not familiar with SkyNani, but they seem cool. This might be a bromance? Which is fine with me. Just not a lot to go on quite yet.

My Magic Prophecy - JimmySea! Woot! Ok, this looks interesting. Having to go on the run together is always a good formula for romance. And I just really like these two.

Head 2 Head - Another SeaKeen series, good for them! I have to admit I didn't finish Only Boo, I was really enjoying them as leads but I just kinda lost interest in the story. Definitely a different dynamic here! And they're getting to be a bit more mature already. I'm mildly intrigued for this one.

Melody of Secrets - another thriller!!!! And it's a trippy one! ForceBook being adults!!! Oh my heart, I am so happy!

My Romance Scammer - there's Ohm! I knew GMMTV didn't bring him in just to bench him. Paired with another Fluke too, lol. The trailer was a bit all over the place, but I think I'll be into this one. And more JuniorMark is never a bad thing.

I Love "a Lot of" You - I do love Nanon, but it's het, and historically multiple personalities haven't been super well handled in media. So just meh.

The Love of Siam - just a tease for this, so not sure what the end product will look like. But I do love musicals, and would love to see a Thai one.

Holy shit, there was so much stuff here! It's definitely ambitious of GMMTV to try and do all this for 2025, but I'm not stressed about it, I'm just happy to get what I get. And it's so incredibly queer overall! Which makes sense based on what we can see of the viewing metrics.

I do hope the people who were dismissing P'Aof in their fears around bromance taking dominance are able to acknowledge that he's doing some really good and important work here, however you feel about the individual story choices.

I love that this feels like it might be the year GMMTV grows up a bit. Their actors are getting older, and the audience who first came in 4 or 5 years ago are older now too.

No proper old man yaoi yet, but it's a step in the right direction!

And I love that we are doing so much more than plain romance. Give me all the BL thrillers!

Didn't get a ton on my bingo wish list, but I am still grateful and happy to be living in the era of this kind of content.

Jean felt himself going in and out of consciousness when he was taken out of the battlefield. There were doctors and medical personnel crowding him, but he couldn't tell where he was going or what was going to happen to him.

When he woke up, he was under a white ceiling. He could feel a tube up his nose and something around his arm and finger. He took a look at his surroundings as best as he could. He was in a room with white walls that irritated his eyes. There was a curtain blocking his view of something on his right. He hated the smell that permeated the room. There was a rectangular box on the far end of the room, hanging up against the wall. Jean's gaze fell forward, and he gasped when he saw Erwin sitting in a rather comfy chair, dozing off with his arms crossed.

"S-sir," Jean croaked for Erwin, but his voice was so broken from misuse that Erwin didn't even hear him. However, Jean flinched when he saw a nurse pull back the curtain that was in front of her. Jean managed to catch a glimpse of someone else being in the bed before the curtain was pulled back into place.

"Good, you're awake," she sighed with relief, although Jean couldn't see her mouth move with the mask over her face, "I'm Nurse Darby. How do you feel? Any pain?"

"N-no," Jean managed to reply, "But..." Jean tried to move his right leg, but he couldn't feel it. He tried to wiggle his toes, but nothing happened, "My leg? Where's my leg?"

Jean heard something being loudly in his ear, causing him to panic even more. The nurse noticed this and quickly turned down the noise of a machine that was next to him. She then grabbed a circular chair and sat down next to his bed. Nurse Darby then took Jean's hand in her own to sooth him.

"I'm sorry," she apologized, "You lost your leg during the fight."

Jean was shellshocked at the news before tears started streaming down his face. Jean raised his left arm to cover his eyes to try and stop his tears, but it didn't work. He felt the nurse let go of his hand, mourning the loss of comfort. He suddenly felt something on his face and lifted his arm to see the woman wiping his tears with a napkin.

"I know it hurts," she declared, "You've been dealing with a lot. But the good news is that you're alive."

"But...I won't be able to walk again," Jean whimpered.

Nurse Darby seemed to have smiled behind the mask. "Well the prosthetic won't be as advanced as his," she pointed to Erwin, "But Earth has a few prosthetics that will help you walk again."

"Really?" Jean asked hopefully, "That's possible."

"You're going to need to go through physical therapy to learn how to walk again, but with time and effort, you will," Nurse Darby reassured, "Right now, you need to rest and recover."

"My friends. Where are they?" Jean asked.

"Your friends are alive, but they're being quarantined right now to prevent any spreads of diseases," Nurse Darby explained, "When they're done, I'll make sure they're able to come and see you."

Jean couldn't help but start to cry in relief, causing Nurse Darby to wipe his tears some more.

"You're being given liquids right now, but we'll move you over to solid foods soon," she reassured as she stood up, "I'll have to go right now, but if you need anything, press this." She picked up a white rectangular box with a red button on it, "And someone will come to help you.

"Thank you," Jean said to her as she left the room. He still lamented the loss of his leg, but the chance to still be able to walk again made him hopeful. He turned his attention to the curtain on his right. Who was there?

Thoughts regarding recent Halo novels?

I personally LOVED Epitaph (and I’m so glad they got Keith Szarabajka to read the audiobook), it was INCREDIBLE!!!!

I thought Outcasts was pretty good too. Especially the adjunct at the end.

I also liked the Ace of Spades trilogy.

I’m looking forward to Empty Throne.

I’ve been in the dark on most of the other stuff except for Divine Wind. Which I thoroughly enjoyed! (Pavium and Voridus stealing the Gremlin cracked me up!)

But I think what we need to mark this next upcoming chapter in the series (due to 343i rebranding) is another short story collection.

Something like Evolutions. Even with animated adaptations. (Perhaps even another Halo: Legends anthology film too!)

They've been okay! I don't usually like Troy Denning but Outcasts wasn't bad overall. I really liked Epitaph. I am cautiously optimistic about Empty Throne.

I read the Ace of Spades three but I'll be honest I haven't retained a lot from them a couple of years later, they're kinda in a part of the lore I'm not called upon to think about often so I've lost details.

I feel like we'll only see another anthology when they commit to a direction re: the overall plot again and I have no idea when they're actually going to do that lol.

Hi! Just wanna ask when is usually the Our Sky series is posted/made? Like is it after all the series for the year are finished? Annndd all of the series that was published get those episodes from our skyy???

hii! i accidentally went way overboard with my response so tldr: there's no timeline for when our skyy's come out, there's no guarantee that we'll even get another our skyy (although imo it's extremely likely that we will), and the series included for special episodes in our skyy aren't necessarily even aired or filmed by the time its announced to be included lol (and most shows don't actually get our skyy eps, but the popular ones usually will).

and the longer answer + my speculation about our skyy 3 is under the cut if u want to read my rambling lol 😅:

so there isn't any specific time the our skyy anthologies are made, and not all series are included in it. For reference, our skyy 1 aired in 2018 (and there wasn't necessarily any intention back then for there to be another our skyy), but then our skyy 2 came out in 2023, and obviously by then the bl landscape and gmmtv's scope had changed a lot.

Both of them included series from any year before it was released. However for our skyy 2, what was interesting was that it included special episodes for a boss and a babe, my school president and never let me go (amongst others as well). However our skyy 2 was announced in the GMMTV 2023 lineup event, which happened in november 2022, and a boss and a babe was also announced at this same event. so basically abaab got included in os2 even before the series had been filmed/aired 😅 also my school president and never let me go both started airing in december 2022, so they were announced to be in os2 even before they aired + without any audience feedback, which i find rlly interesting.

overall, speaking for our skyy 2 because i haven't seen os1, i think the series they include are decided on either how popular the shows were (bad buddy, atots, the eclipse), how popular the pairing is (never let me go), or the pairings that gmmtv is investing in and trying to make popular (forcebook was considerably less popular at that point, and geminifourth weren't even known then lol).

our skyy 3 thoughts:

i definitely think we're gonna get another our skyy soon, especially with how many bls/gls we've gotten in the past 2 years (i'd guess that they'll also include gls this time around). I think we'll get our skyy 3 in gmmtv 2026, with special episodes for a bunch of the recent qls so that the branded cps have work together next year, without having to continuously churn out full-length bls for every single pairing (and because a lot of gmmtv2025's lineup won't come out until 2026 anyway lol). i'm also guessing that we'll get more het/gen shows in next year's lineup.

in terms of a high school frenemy special ep in our skyy (because i think that's where this question came from ahaha), realistically speaking, i think it's extremely unlikely they'll be included, purely for the fact that it isn't actually a bl (of course there's the off-chance that they make it a bl in the special ep, but lbr that's extremely wishful thinking lol). if they do include it, the queerbaiting allegations are gonna go crazyyy again (🙄), but i can also see some fans taking the announcement as confirmation that they'll make saintshin canon, and that would just lead to disappointment all around. Only way i can see hsf being included is if peaceful property is as well.

(that being said, logic won't stop me from being delulu and manifesting for that hsf os3 ep 😌😌)

No idea and I ain't looking! Trad publishing has me extremely scarred from some nasty comparison wars, so I have kudo and view counts blocked on ALL fics, including mine. From my kudos emails, though, Hallowboned has to be my top fic for sure. Last time I was paying attention most of my other fics didn't pass into triple digits by a long shot

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do!!! I adore comments, and I love chatting with folks, it really keeps me motivated and chugging along. I am... very behind on replying to the comments on my last chapter rn because I feel so awful and guilty about having to quit writing

Uh... I don't write a ton of narrative fics, and I do love me some tragic poetry, but I guess the angstiest collection might be my Signalis one, Observable System Transcendence? But my Omori poem and the Trined Soul collection might be contenders, too

I mean, Trembling Hands is a Trimax fix-it fic, so? Though the Sasaki and Miyano collection, Effortless Dreams, is definitely the most tooth-rotting fluff I've ever slapped onto the page

I think my first piece of written fanwork was a Danny Phantom Quizilla thing lmao, I'm old. I don't remember what it was about, just that it was ANGSTY

Favourite fic you've ever written?

Ah?!?! Honestly, each project is so different and written from such a different place, I've got no idea. I'm proudest of Observable System Transcendence being my longest, most consistent project (outside of my Smaugust collection, which isn't a fan project), Hallowboned being the first thing that really inspired me in ages--and the most indulgent one lol. But each collection and fic and poem comes from such a different place, and it's hard to pull them apart and pick???

Haha maybe! I already have 4 new sets of team greed stuff that weren't in the original anthology, and I do actually have some thumbnails of another couple dumb ideas I just have yet to pencil out lol

I might also just drop in a few of my other comics as well if I really wanna fill space, or just have a smaller zine add-on for once - I really won't don't have any plans till I run out of the first anthology (storage is a commodity I have very little of as a grad student lol), but after that we'll see what happens! I honestly don't really remember how I started writing fanfiction. I wrote my first fics when I was 14, so it's been a while lol. I think what happened was that I discovered fanfiction and started reading it, which made me realise that I could write my own stories with the characters I love. But I mainly wrote original back then, so once I lost interest in Harry Potter, I stopped writing fics for 5 years. I also don't remember exactly why I started again. I just found the Death Note kink meme and I guess some of the ideas inspired me enough to write fic again. Then I took another 5-year break before I felt like writing, well, anything, really, I had the worst writer's block. I faintly remember I wanted to start writing fics again, so I asked my followers for requests, and I haven’t stopped writing fics since.

Right now I'm not working on anything original, but I pitched an idea for the next #ficwip anthology, which I've done on two years now (I have yet to promo the newest anthology, I probably should), so I'll hopefully have that to work on this year. I was also thinking of trying to write an original novel this year because I miss doing it, but we'll see how that goes.

Giga ultra mega late night post

So, I been working on the Spoon Ballerina for five/six days and I'm learning a lot about the process. This model is a style test before the actual style test! Once I master the 2D/3D style, I'll be set for working on RFR pages (by 2025 maybe I don't know lol)

I know I definitely need a pipeline for character and environment asset design and creation prior to producing the pages for RFR. But to streamline this, here's what I'm thinking about:

After style test, create base shaders and rigs for eyes, mouth, and other surface anatomy for my object ocs. This will allow me to easily place and modify these assets without recreating them for each character. Since most object ocs range from similar forms to more complex forms, recycling models is going to be important. Same with human/god characters, too.

Also, for human/god character models, I look into making base models with a variety of body types so I have a ready-made asset to modify for a new character.

Sculpting is going to be important for the more complex character designs and background elements, so I need to learn how to sculpt and also recycle sculpted assets.

Maybe....a process test after the style test? Say for example, for a scene, I need three living swords and five living orbs and three cloaks, along with the characters from the style test (Eightenate, Inga, and Gwenny). Three of the orbs have injuries and two cloaks (rust rot, ichor loss, burns), the other two are uninjured. The swords are helping them, one of them is a leader speaking to Eightenate, clearly more decorated with regalia and etchings as signs of their rank. In the same scene (or panel whatever) shows Inga recovering (maybe escape from the swords) speaking to two other humans about what happened. All these characters will borrow elements from each of their base characters with modifications needed for their role and design in the scene.

How long will it take for me to do modifications to the style test characters to create the new ones in this example? What about background elements?

Because, I think it might be a week or two to create the original base characters and environment elements, then a day or a couple days to modify them into the new characters. Then another for setting up the scene, rendering, and adding final touches such as color grade and affects. Final render then publishing it.

Also for some background elements, I might be able to find ready made assets on 3D modeling stores. Just do the modifications needed for the style of the comic and just import them into the scenes needed.

Oof storage space is going to be something ahhh, I'll figure it out, might get a three terabyte drive, might last me a few years, and a cloud backup system for it too

And that means finding ways to fund the comic once I get it off the ground. For paying asset plugin creators, backup services, other artists and designers if I start hiring, and so on. I have no idea for merch... maybe art books, short story anthologies, commissions, or figurines and plushies, maybe an actual sword lol (that's going to be thousands to make lol).

I'm not hiring for right now, I don't have the income to pay artists, but when I do, I'm looking for artists and designers who work in Blender, Krita, and Photoshop. They need to be 18 years or older (WOR is New Adult Fantasy; target audience is 18-25 yrs), have some familiarity with fantasy elements and ancient and medieval cultures I take inspiration from for WOR's storytelling and design, and also object shows since that is WOR's main inspiration is from.

We'll see what comes from the style test first!

the renaming worries me a bit b/c it really seems like they've restarted/changed the plot of this game a bunch, with every teaser it seems to have a new focus. Guess we'll see, it's arguably a better title tho I'll miss the memes of DA:D

Also what if I don't want to guard the veil, what if I want to rip it down just to see? Can we have that ending too? Probably not right? (It could be neat if one of the factions was solas' and you're actually working against your companions to tear the veil down)

We're probably going to end up in the fade anyway tho. Can we have DAO fade weirdness back? Please I want to do shapeshifting puzzles or something (i think in in the minority of people who liked the fade bits in DAO tho lol)

Also the "many biomes" is a little worrisome too, like technically DA:I had lots of biomes but they were empty of meaningful content. Like I don't really want to visit many empty landscapes (or collect junk in them), bioware, I'd much rather trawl around a couple of richly packed ones and listen to my companions bicker.

Hopefully they just mean we'll get to see more than just one region (probably tevinter) and also maybe we'll go to the black city!??? Go kick the maker in their shins. More old gods stuff could be good 🤔

Idk this still all very vague and I guess we'll see on June 11. I am excited but it is tempered tbh, some of the language in this info makes me nervous (there's a lot of red flags and it's been a decade so idk anymore)
