A Momentous Break
Lee Felix drabble <3 The MAXIDENT trailer made me do it. They all looked so beautiful so I just wanted to write a very low key, calm oneshot for the universe I imagined that particular gang to be in. I imagine Felix would remain his soft, kind self, just clad in leather and maybe with some vices that aren't permitted to an idol.
I listened to Sunshine, My Universe, Streetlight, you know, chill vibes, lovely vibes.
”Hey. You look like you could use this.”
The first thing that comes to her view is a lit cigarette. The smoke dances upward delicately before vanishing into the cool city wind.
The hand holding the cancer stick, as Y/N’s father had called it, is slender and pale, the skin contrasted beautifully by the black leather sleeve that clad the following arm.
”Hi Felix.”
”Woah, that bad?”
She can’t help the small chuckle that bubbles out at his words.
”Yeah. Boss is on my ass as if I’m the root of every problem.”
”Is Lee Know being difficult again?”
Y/N swats at the smoke to signal what Felix already knows; she hates the stuff. Well, when she’s sober.
”Nah. He’s cool.”
”So the bother-brother isn't working tonight?”
”Right again,” she smiles, leaning back against the concrete stairs, elbows holding her up.
Felix licks his lips, staring at her. The black t-shirt with the bar logo stretches deliciously, showing off her chest and muscled shoulders, her forehead and slender neck are coated with shimmering sweat.
”Bet he’s at the bodega right now.”
”Probably.”
”So, why aren’t you?”
Y/N fixes her tired eyes up to Felix, and his tall, fit frame paired with the freckles and black hair makes her mouth dry. Nothing new there. Better not smoke, it makes the drought in her mouth even worse.
As he leans on the familiar metal railing, Felix feels her gaze and can’t help but move his own around the alley. He wonders if those dumpsters are ever actually emptied, because they’re always bursting with black plastic bags so the lids don’t even close. The familiar graffiti behind the hideous yellow-black wasteland is almost fluorescent as the neon signs and streetlights shine on them.
There are a few ideas in his head about what to answer. Ways to go about it. He could be honest, he could make it cute, make it funny. Attempting a joke wasn’t an option, maybe if he could ask Jisung. Maybe he should say it’s because he wants to spend time with her. That this seems to be the only time the two can be alone without her brother and the rest of the gang. That this is what he looks forward to whenever she has a shift at the bar. Which in turn is the reason he’s always excited when she has to work. Just in case she’d have noticed it when she’d told them her schedule. He had a hard time hiding it.
He could say it right now.
Instead he shrugs.
”Just thought you might like some company.”
Always the cool guy.
”I don’t mind it,” she answers with a soft smile, eyes traveling to the cloudy, dark sky. She needs something to say, quick, before she admits how much she enjoys having him here.
”So much light pollution, I can’t stand it sometimes. I wanna see some stars!”
The pout is adorable.
”We could go on a roadtrip or something, get out of the city,” Felix speaks quickly, barely registering the fact that this could be perceived as asking her out.
But he doesn’t need to worry about that. Y/N’s brain isn’t wired to detect such things from people she’s interested in herself, because God forbid any crush could ever be reciprocated.
”We should!”
Felix’s heart leaps upward and freezes there. But then Y/N's excitement suddenly deflates.
”But with all of us it's such a fuss, you know? Two cars and all…”
Right.
”Oh yeah, right… big fuss.”
There was always some combo of the nine of them wherever they went; six, four, eight, three. Pairs were a thing. There were of course certain people who hung out more than others, or rather it just happened more naturally.
Bangchan, Jisung and Changbin live together so they were often joined at the hip. Seungmin and Jeongin basically run the bodega now that Seungmin’s grandfather was getting too old to look after everything. Lee Know and Y/N are siblings. Hyunjin and Felix and Lee Know hang out a lot. All nine of them dance together, but it’s not uncommon for at least one of them to miss practice.
Felix and Y/N are almost never alone.
Felix sits down with a sigh, back against one of the vertical metal bars. The leather jacket was a good choice, he briefly thinks as the September winds whisk his hair around.
”Big fuss,” his low voice repeats, the ’s’ sizzling in Y/N’s ears.
They really should spend more time like this.
”Maybe…” she mumbles softly while picking herself up to lean on her knees. The stretchy black fabric feels sticky under her elbows because she’d had to crawl under a few tables to help a customer find their wallet. Not her finest moment. ”Maybe we could just go by ourselves?”
It really is more of a question, seeing as she doesn’t know whether Felix would want that or not. Raising the intonation is also a way to mask the vibe as calm and collected, though his answer to what she was suggesting has the potential to make or break the moment and perhaps her whole outlook on their relationship.
But no pressure or anything.
Felix’s breath hitches. Actually no, he inhales the last puffs from his smoke, which get stuck in his throat, which in turn cause him to start coughing like a dying man.
"Hey, hey, breathe!"
Y/N's open palm collides with Felix's back firmly.
"Here."
A water bottle is offered and gladly accepted.
The open palm remains, now absentmindedly drawing rivers on the black leather.
"Didn't mean to shock you."
"You didn't," the man croaks, voice as low as ever. "I'd love that."
Could it really be this easy?
They could just go alone because they both want to? Apparently they both want to. They could swipe Lee Know's car and just drive off together, leaving the city only to return with the memory of having seen stars together. Could it really, truly be this easy? To go on a date with one of your best friends?
"I'm free tomorrow," Y/N smiles, cheeks high, the corners of her eyes crinkle.
Before Felix has a chance to answer, the heavy metal door behind them opens as the bottom scratches the concrete that the steps lead up to. Felix keeps his dark-brown eyes on her and half listens as she's commanded back inside by the shrill voice of her boss. Her soft aura captures him, so much so that he doesn't even register the words leaving those beautiful, mesmerizing lips in front of him after the door is closed once again. She smiles, shoulders rising and falling from the small chuckle. All still inaudible to him.
"Duty calls."
Suddenly they're on his. The lips. It's quick, easy, so familiar. And yet it's completely new. Like a seal on the date they'd just calmly agreed on. The only woman Felix has thought of romantically in years just gave him a kiss. It's an agreement.
Okay, we're trying this thing together now. Just the two of us.
It felt easy, just like everything else with her does.
Y/N wonders why she's waited so long.
Felix does too. And regrets not being the one to initiate it.
"Okay," Y/N breathes out and locks eyes with the man she just kissed, irises scanning him to look for signs that what she did was not okay.
There are none.
Instead, as if to check that what just happened actually happened, Felix leans back in, cold hands flying to cradle her head, and she copies his movements. They deepen the agreement as the kiss turns into a more PG13 version of its predecessor.
The street lights from both ends of the alley colour the scene a deep okra, and passing headlights make Felix's freckles bounce in and out of view.
Y/N can't wait to see everyone's faces when they walk into the bodega together after her shift.
About time. About fucking time. Their voices ring in her head. Felix can see the grins on all seven of those stupid, beloved faces.
"Wanna come in for a drink?" The question is breathless, excited, hopeful.
"I have to tell your brother later. So yeah, I could really use it."

Candy 22-23
hmm, interesting, so 5 minutes of Terezi time equals about 2 weeks of John time?
What’s the math on that, how many minutes are in a week? 10,080? Neat.
what’s that divided by 5? 2016?
so time is moving almost 2000 times faster for John than it is for Terezi?
a Day for Terezi is literally 5 and a half Years for John by that Math.
All of John’s conversations have been happening over the course of not even 2 full days for Terezi so far, and by John’s estimation that she only ever messages every year or so
that turns out to be like, every 260 minutes for Terezi?? If my math is correct? (525,600 minutes / 2016 = 260 minutes = 4.333... hours)
4 and 1/3 hours.
oh my god, Terezi and John talk literally every 4 hours and 20 minutes that’s hilarious they turned 413 into a 420 weed joke that’s amazing
I wonder if Terezi takes his convo’s seriously or just think it’s an extended prank that their both neck deep in at this point? I mean, they joke with eachother a lot and he literally messages her what seems from her point of view, literally every 4:20 (Trolls understand weed jokes because I said so and because it’s funny)
Does he ever send her pic’s of what they all look like as adults? Does she think it’s badly like, photoshopped or something like what she used to do with Dave?
Or does she really know? Either way is interesting to be honest
Wait, did Gamzee make out Jake’s/Jane’s son Tavros?? Why is John so nonchalant about that?
or is it a different Tavros???
I’m confused, or maybe not, John’s going straight into a line that says take Tavros away from his family. what the fuck is Gamzee doing.
So I guess this is what happens to all non canon timelines? They get torn to shreds by the inevitable cosmic background blender that is the giant black hole thing in Meat?
Oh god Jane made a crockership, yeah we’re in the nosedive of all of Jane’s unsavoury tendencies made manifest
we don’t need a tiara here, this was carefully manifested and nurtured to happen by another guy who all fell into the worst version of himself
Sad to see karkat and dave seperated too, but interesting karkat finally got fed enough enough to lead a resistance
this friend circle is really going down the shits
but then again, kind of was to be expected, i mean, it’s not like they were all actually friends, there wasn’t really much of an extended friend circle for the alpha kids. its a stretch to even say John and Jane were close friends because they didn’t really have much interaction with each other either
Jane and Jake is pretty much a lost cause, Dirk is dead and also encouraging her downfall, and Roxy is totally accepting of everything around her for better or worse, and Calliope and Jane were never close not to mention Calliope seems content to just follow Roxy everywhere
there’s literally no one actually close enough to Jane to have an actual “i care about you’re my friend” conversation with that would actually feel genuine, so it’s kind of inevitable she’d end up like this in this sort of situation with no one to help her steer her course
John’s getting desperate to feel some sense of reality again, that picture of Terezi is almost like an anchor in the storm
he’s only attached to his reality because of his personal investment into it, like he’s too deep in it now to ever escape, not because he really truly cares and is happy I think but because he’s put so much effort into making this all work
Also damn, he’s really gonna kidnap Tavros, but i mean like, I don’t blame him if apparently his sort of father clown figure has been making out with him as part of a religious cult nonsense i hope im interpreting that wrong but he literally says PBandJ again and says Tavros, so like, who else could he mean
Fake redemption nonsense finally going down the toilet where it belongs
but damn, John’s gonna start a war I can see it now, this is gonna pop Jane’s cork and for all we know she could easily use it as an excuse to attack trolls by blaming the kidnapping on them
You know what is so interesting about this though?
Jane was raised by the condesce, and feared alternian society like it was inherent to trollkind
but here she is displaying that same tyranny in the name of humanity, it does a good job of showing this bullshit isn’t inherent to any person or race
but man, it is ironic how much of a mini Condesce Jane is becoming, complete with her own Grand High Blood too, while fighting what she probably considers tyrannical trollkind
It’s cute how Harry talks in a lighter Roxier shade of blue though, unfortunately due to the name I can imagine anything except Harry Potter being their actual child, Harry Anderson as a figure means nothing to me even though I know the reference and the picture that shows up in Homestuck I get the joke
Maybe it’s because it’s also Roxy’s child and she always had a thing for wizards so
Tavros talking in a dark purple is less endearing, because it so clearly shows that despite supposedly being a product of love between Jane and Jake, Gamzee as a weird third interloper has entirely taken over this family
Gamzee being the auspistice for Jane and Jake doesn’t sound good. Weird that he’s seen as like an Uncle figure too. This family is messed up to hell.
mmm.. I don’t think Jake and Jane are in a kismesis...
*UPSETTING CHILD ABUSE CONTENT AHEAD*
I don’t like how uncomfortable Tavros seems to be with an uncle figure taking him up to his bedroom im getting all kinds of bad child abuse vibes, not from john god no but like, Tavros seems so expectant of something to happen and that’s not pairing well with what Gamzee has apparently been doing
“Tavros sighs, his facial expression unchanging. He looks resigned. To life in general, as well as whatever it is he’s expecting from this particular situation. Wait... what is he expecting from this situation, having been led away to a secluded part of the house by an adult? What has he been taught to expect?“
I don’t like this. John please kidnap the child. Even though it’s going to start a war.
No I don’t like where this is going this is getting a big gigantic NOPE for me
Oh fuck okay, so it hasn’t happened yet, big relief there
but almost, still warning sirens going off in my head because
“JOHN: TRAIN you???
TAVROS: Yes,
TAVROS: In matters of combat,,, philosophy,,, life,,, love,,,
TAVROS: I suppose to behave the way a mentor does, as he sees it,,,”
WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT GAMZEE BEING A DIRK GAUGE
Is “Combat, Philosophy, Life, Love” just like symbolism for the four shitty ingredients of Lord English symbolically mixed together? Like yeah they don’t all sound bad when you put it that way but really it’s like
Combat = Physical Abuse = Caliborn
Philosophy = Religious Cult = Gamzee
Love = Obsession = Equius
Life = Dominance and Power = Dirk
Every shitty part of the LE soul combo contributes something bad to the whole
uh oh, they’ve been found out by Jade
Jade’s not exactly gonna throw him to the big bad wolf, but is she just gonna disagree with his actions? Or is she gonna try to stop him.
or argue? argue’s good, sure, not really but sure
Everyone knows Jane’s gone to shit, but everyone’s too cowardly to stand up to her and tell her she’s wrong
oh shit, speaking of
oh, well, that didn’t go how i wanted it to
John got so close to saying something that could break through to Jane, but Karkat was right, she couldn’t get her head out of her ass long enough to listen to what was being said to her, and instead immediately jump to conclusions about what she thinks people are talking about
she probably think everyone hates her suddenly because of her political ideas and thinks its ridiculous thats everyones getting so mad at her for it, head so far up the ass she should be turning into a fourth dimensional pretzel by now
even though this could have all have been avoided if someone just had enough bravery to nip it in the bud, so instead of angry raze the ground retaliatory action she could have just been embarassed and angry in the personal and then gotten over it in a few weeks
but nope, genocidal war in the works now
oof
just big oof
gotta say though, I’m sitting practically eating gigantic mounds of popcorn at the drama (Besides the one part that was implying gamzee was sexually abusing tavros before they made it clear he wasn’t, I could do without that one honestly)
other than that though, loving the drama, feel bad for the people getting the shit end of the sticks though

I see you reblogging some comic stuff an I was wondering if you have a favorite comic or favorite character or ship?
this ask is from so long ago but [DEEP BREATH IN] i’m finally going to answer it, nonny. finally. i kept wanting to read a little bit farther in my comics stack because.... maybe i’ll like that and will regret not having recced it, i just hafta--get--to it, see? and, honestly, i’m still there BUT, come on, i’ll never be caught up because that would mean comics would just have to stop coming out and i would be sad forever if that happened, SO
i’m not even going to pretend like i can narrow this down to one comic. (one ship? sure, that’s spideypool. one character? sure, that’s the merc with a mouth, the regenerating degenerate, wade motherfucking wilson. but one comic?!) there is just straight-up too much out there to make a definitive ‘yes, this is it, this is THE ONE ™ ’ statement. instead, uh, let’s break this shit down, yeah? (super special secret bonus round, will note all lgbt+ rep and standalone comics.) in no particular order, here the frig it goes!
HORROR
infidel, by pornsak pichetshote and aaron campbell. in case you haven’t seen this on every 2018 best list ever, here it is. and, yeah, it was good. a muslim-american main character living in a haunted apartment building where the entities feed off the xenophobia of its occupants. if that’s not a fucking modern horror story i don’t know what is.
spread, by justin jordan and kyle strahm. THIS IS ONE OF MY NEW AND ALREADY ALL-TIME FAVORITES. what an awesomely weird and epic story. the spread is an uncontrollable, unstoppable monster-making force that humanity accidentally unleashed by digging too deep. it infects everything it touches and basically all of humanity is running from quarantine to quarantine just hoping for the best. and speaking of hope.... she’s a baby, rescued by no, and the only thing that’s ever been able to stop the spread. also, no’s gay? and i just DID NOT see that coming. it seems like it’s going to be such a formulaic, bro-y story about the action hero who kisses the face off his girl (her name’s molly and she’s batshit insane and amazing) and instead, nope, it is not that at all. lgbt+ main characters.
the black monday murders, by jonathan hickman and tomm coker. hate capitalism? think all the rich and powerful are evil, soul-sucking monsters? [obnoxious, low-budget commercial sound effects] MAN, HAVE I GOT THE SERIES FOR YOU.
the beauty, by jeremy haun and jason a. hurley. i just started this recently but so far, oh my good golly gosh, i looove it. a sexually transmitted disease that makes you conventionally gorgeous.... at least before it explodies you. [wide, creepy smile] the art is gorgeous, the characters are aces and i am very, very pleased so far. lgbt+ minor characters.
the great divide, by ben fisher and adam markiewicz. this? was a COOL idea. the execution stumbled a bit but, gosh, was it neat. it’s post-apocalyptic where touching another person will literally kill.... one of you. the survivor then absorbs the memories of the person who dies, taking on a ‘rider.’ some people collect them, some people go mad, some form a bond, all have the side effect of dyslexia. like i said, neat as all get out. lgbt+ minor-ish/main-ish character. standalone.
revival, by tim seely and mike norton. a rural town in wisconsin experiences ‘miracle day,’ where the dead rise again.... except, they were kinda already mourned and buried and this is really just fucking up the status quo.
the woods, by james tynion iv and michael dialynas. a high school gets picked up and plopped down in an entirely new, and wickedly hostile universe. it’s all survival and alliances and seeing what you’re really made of when it comes down to it. lgbt+ main characters.
clean room, by gail simone and jon davis-hunt. a cult, a journalist and a clean room walk into a bar...
anya’s ghost, by vera brosgol. you think it’ll be a cute story of a girl and her ghost. HA HA THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENS AT ALL, OKAY.
FANTASY
rumble, by john arcudi and james harren. SCARECROW WARRIOR GOD, SCARECROW WARRIOR GOD, SCARECROW WARRIOR GOD!!! okay, first off, the art in this? pushes every friggin’ button i’ve got, and many i did not know i had. second, this book is so fucking fun. it’s mythology that’s balls to the wall ridiculous, funny, and features a main character whose life motto is basically: ‘do i have to?’ infinitely relatable and then some.
heathen, by natasha alterici and rachel deering. UGH, ONE OF MY FAVORITES. the art is just horribly, horrendously gorgeous and it’s LESBIAN VIKING MYTHOLOGY, OKAY. OKAYYYY??? lgbt+ main characters.
the wicked + the divine, by kieron gillen and jamie mckelvie. one of my favorite ever series right here. it’s a hella cool concept (gods reincarnating as humans every twelve years, and burning up their hosts in two), whip-smart and if you’ve ever met a human being who likes a pun more than kieron gillen i defy you to produce them. lgbt+ main and minor characters.
batgirl, by gail simone and adrian sayaf and vicente cifuentes. you know how people rave about gail simone? there’s a reason people rave about gail simone. honestly, i’ve never had much interest in babs. i don’t tend to go for superheroes who don’t kill and i have even less interest in ‘the killing joke’ story line and i am convinced only gail simone could’ve done the recovery on that and she did a GLORIOUS job of it.
red hood and the outlaws, by scott lobdell and dexter soy. (ignoring recent - and annoying - developments), this is my favorite of all the rebirths dc did. scott lobdell is the only writer to have gotten the idea down of: okay, we’re starting over, i assume you don’t know anything but i also assume there are a bajillion people reading who know everything, and hit the perfect medium between those two things. so if you want to start a jason todd run, you legitimately can here, and get all the found family, badassery, batman-teasing enjoyment there is to be had.
iceman, by sina grace and robert gill (covers by kevin wada). classic super-heroing here and bobby’s first solo title. he’s figuring out coming out while fighting (and flirting) with baddies. sina really gets his humor and how truly wonder-awful it is! lgbt+ main character.
spider-man/deadpool, by joe kelly and ed mcguinness. watch those names there, those are your guys right there, period. they looked at the void of a spider-man/deadpool series and filled it with absolutely everything you could possibly want for the pair (sans a hardcore make-out sesh, though they did get a few variant covers with some puckered up lips in there!)
limbo, by dan watters and caspar wijngaard. a fusion of 80s aesthetics, voodoo elements and a noir tone. just some remarkably cool shit in this. the ending, for me, left something to be desired but it was more than worth it to see worship via mixtapes. standalone.
hawkeye: kate bishop, by kelly thompson and leonardo romero. kate bishop is, apparently???, a super impossible character for a lot of writers. kelly thompson is not one of them. kelly thompson is my favorite kate bishop writer, actually, and the fact that she is ever not writing her is a gd travesty.
the unbeatable squirrel girl, by ryan north and erica henderson. honestly, i’m so tempted to just stick this under ‘contemporary,’ because it really does just feel very... normal. doreen’s navigating college, new friendships, and y’know... the squirrely-ness. this had every opportunity to suck and instead it’s funny as heck, never takes itself too seriously, and is just pure good-hearted entertainment through and through.
wolf, by ales kot and matt taylor. a paranormal detective and the-possible-antichrist go on a road trip. people hated this comic and i don’t know how you can hate a comic that has a character called freddy chtonic who has tentacles for a mouth???
ms. marvel, by g. willow wilson and adrian alphona. hi, you read ms. marvel because the world is a garbage fire and people are terrible and your cynicism is at an all time high and then kamala khan waltzes in and reminds you people generally want to help each other and the world improves when we work together and that thing optimists feel? you’ll feel that for as long as you’ve got the pages open and that’s a magical thing. lgbt+ minor character.
monstress, by marjorie m. liu and sana takeda. psychic links with monsters, matriarchal societies, magic and witchery, half-human/half-animal (and other ratios) characters, all through a steampunk lens. what’s not to like about that??
inhuman, by charles soule. i love this series, i love the idea of being a total average joe/joanne, getting smacked in the face by a cloud of mist and suddenly having to figure out how to live basically a whole new life. also, if you don’t fall madly in love with dante pertuz, i don’t even know what to tell you, my dude.
heart in a box, by kelly thompson and meredith mcclaren. break-ups suck, but only because of that whole pesky broken heart thing, right? so emma gives hers away. problem solved, no? standalone.
i kill giants, by joe kelly and j.m. ken niimura. i didn’t cry my eyes out or anything. did not. standalone.
sex criminals, by matt fraction and chip zdarsky. having sex = stopping time, which leads suzie and jon to the only logical conclusion: let’s rob some banks!
hawkeye, by matt fraction and david aja. honestly there are a lot of other artist combos in this run but the only ones that are worthwhile are the ones that have fraction and aja’s names on them - sorry not sorry.
SCIENCE FICTION
black bolt, by saladin ahmed and christian ward. saladin revived this character one hundred million percent. there is absolutely a reason this was parading around all over ‘best’ lists when it was released. it really, really did the damn thing.
saga, by brian k. vaughan and fiona staples. this is the comic you recommend to people who don’t even like comics because it is that good. like, my dad - who hadn’t read a comic since he was a pre-teen, eagerly awaits each new trade. the world-building, the characters, the care put into every single solitary bit of all the things? unparalleled. lgbt+ minor characters.
frostbite, by joshua williamson and jason shawn alexander. a post-apocalyptic story that has humanity dying from a plague that literally freezes you from the inside out. very neat, very cold, very readable. standalone.
descender, by jeff lemire and dustin nguyen. this had a rough start, for me, with the main character of the first trade being tim-21, an android who is literally incapable of having the depth to be a lead BUT that does not last through to the next trade, thank god. lots of space and found family and world-building in this to be had! but you know how people rave about jeff lemire? there’s a reason people rave about jeff lemire.
paper girls, by brian k. vaughan and cliff chiang. the 80s and time travel and lifelong friendships. it’s brian k. vaughan, you know it’s good, okay? why do i even have to sell you here, man? lgbt+ main characters.
injection, by warren ellis and declan shalvey. this is another one on my list that started out a little rough but really appealed to me later on. there was just a lot to absorb in that first trade but, once you’ve got it, the ride gets way, way smoother. lgbt+ main and minor characters.
black science, by rick remender and matteo scalera. this was a rocky start, because the main character is such an asshole but in a way where he can’t see he’s an asshole, he’s just a tortured genius who’s superior to all of you, don’t you know? but i am so glad i persevered because if that’s the set up? the rest of the series is knocking him back down. super scientist grant mckay finds a way to access the eververse, every possible reality the universe has on offer, and that’s really what causes every single problem that follows. hard to cause the apocalypse and be an arrogant prick, ya know?
CONTEMPORARY
giant days, by john allison and lissa treiman. this series is so funny and smart and warm. these girls are so kind to each other and relatable and failing at adulting regularly and often and i love reading about them. lgbt+ main character.
lumberjanes, by noelle stevenson and grace ellis and brooke a. allen. this is funny and ridiculous and kind and cool and all other awesome adjectives and you should read it, fact. lgbt+ main characters.
my brother’s husband, by gengoroh tagame and anne ishii (translator). this is such a sweet story about acceptance and family tbh. lgbt+ main character.
fence, by c. s. pacat and johanna the mad. i mean... i need to see nicholas and seiji hook-up, i need that, stat. stat means now! lgbt+ main characters.
WEB/INDEPENDENT COMICS
long exposure, by kam heyward. so mitch and jonas are my absolute faves and i love them to death and the author is so kind in that they actually put this up in print on indyplanet so i can read it the way i, personally, love to read comics (and - bonus! - support them with the monies). lgbt+ main characters.
modern dread, by pat shand and ryan fassett (editors). i’ve been trying to find more better horror comics lately so i’ve been kind of half-heartedly stumbling through kickstarter on the hunt and this was SUCH a great find. it’s an anthology but more cleverly done than any other kickstarter anthology i’ve read, with a main story line that seamlessly strings together the would-be-disjointed ones. this was really thoughtfully put together and really well done! standalone.
heartstopper, by alice oseman. a very sweet story about two high school-aged boys becoming fast friends, playing rugby and falling in love. the two characters are mentioned as an aside in the author’s book, solitaire, and she became so invested in them that she wrote their backstory as a free webcomic. lgbt+ main characters.
the pale, by jay fabares. JUST started this (like, just a day or so ago) but i’m enjoying it so far!
hotblood!, by toril orlesky. i mean... is it a webcomic about a centaur falling in love with his boss? it just might be. did i get a bound edition through a kickstarter campaign? maybe. maybe i did that. who’s to say? lgbt+ main characters.
the bay, by bbz. life on mars through the lens of three young professionals who form an odd but lasting friendship. lgbt+ main characters.
hard drive, by artroan. is it a nsfw comic about a dude and a robot? .... it might be a nsfw comic about a dude and a robot. [coughs] lgbt+ main characters.
seen nothing yet, by tess stone. a nsfw comic about two amateur ghost hunters. can’t imagine why i might be interested in that [coughs] lgbt+ main characters.

Games of the Year 2020
Given that I don't think anyone reads this, especially since I've largely stopped using it for anything other than these lists, it feels silly to write an intro on "what a weird year 2020 was" or whatever. It is worth mentioning, however, that in a "normal" year, it's quite possible that my GotY would have been different.
I think every game on this list was played on the Nintendo Switch, which, aside from FIFA, is really the only device I play games on these days. I've waxed poetic about this in the past, so there's no reason to talk much more about this now. I'm really hoping a "Switch Pro" comes out next year—to me, that's much more interesting and desirable than either a PS5 or X-Box Series Whatever.
Anyway, on to the list.
***RECOMMENDED*** What the Golf Minecraft Dungeons Bubble Bobble 4 Friends Mr Driller DrillLand Carrion Panzer Paladin A Short Hike Part Time UFO Immortals Fenyx Rising
I kept a list of all the games I played this year, and more than half didn't make the cut at all, so the games in this lowest category are all still extremely worthwhile games, in my opinion. What the Golf was originally a mobile game, but I played it on the Switch and had a blast. Very funny and inventive, and more than enough "game" there, in case you were wondering. I played through and beat Minecraft Dungeons with my daughter, which was a blast. She knew all the lore, and I knew the genre, so we were genuinely able to help each other out throughout the game. The new games in the Bubble Bobble and Mr Driller franchises were largely carried by my nostalgia for them—neither was perfect, but absolutely worth the investment if you care about the series. DrillLand in particular had some surprisingly inventive takes on the established formula.
Carrion and Panzer Paladin were nice surprises when they came out. A lot was written about the former when it debuted and I don't have much to add to that conversation, but I didn't see nearly as much love for Panzer Paladin. It's a fun little retro platformer, something like a "12 bit" art style, and you play through levels in any order you want, a la Mega Man. The most interesting part of the game to me is actually the weapon management system—you get a ton of weapons throughout the game, and the real strategy lies in choosing when to break certain ones, maintaining a steady supply of good ones, and even in using them to trigger checkpoints.
I watched my friend Ben stream A Short Hike when it first came out on PC, and I was excited to finally play it myself. It didn't disappoint, and I loved the relative short length, combined with the overall carefree and relaxed vibe. My daughter played through to the end too, which was nice. Another short-ish game this year was Part Time UFO, which, like What the Golf, was a originally a mobile game. Part Time UFO was made by HAL, and it shows throughout—most obviously in that Kirby shows up in the background from time to time, but also in the overall craft and polish.
The last game in this tier is Immortals: Fenix Rising, which nearly ended up being a tier higher, but in the end it just felt better here. This is a great take on an Ubisoft BotW clone (which I mean in the nicest way possible), and the setting is fantastic, but ultimately there are some key flaws that hold it back for me. Ubisoft's seemingly insatiable appetite to Get More Money Out of the Player, even after they've purchased the game, comes to mind immediately. Requiring a login and creation of an Ubisoft account is another. You don't really think about these things when you're playing the actual game, which is great, but it ended up being enough for me to dock it a little bit in the end.
***ESSENTIAL*** Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition One Step to Eden Streets of Rage 4 Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
Kentucky Route Zero is another game that I feel like has already been written about and discussed a lot, and I don't know what I have to add to that. I'm so glad it ended up on consoles—it always seemed to me like the kind of game that would be trapped on PCs forever. The one moment that will always stick out for me was when I was playing it in bed one night with the kid. We found something in our inventory that had a phone number written on the back, so, in effort to kind of indulge her and be a little goofy, I decided to actually call it. I don't know what I was expecting, but it sure wasn't the fully realized "Guide to Echo River" (voiced by Will fucking Oldham!) that we got. It was an incredible experience, one of many in this extremely beautiful, thoughtful game.
One Step to Eden introduced me to a game genre I didn't know I needed—basically, "what if deck-based roguelite, but with an action-based real-time dexterity component?" It's all well and good to create a perfect deck in something like Slay the Spire, where any nerd can take as long as they need to run their perfect calculations or whatever during their turn, but it's really something else to try and do it while dodging complex enemy attack patterns at the same time. I feel like I read that this was based off a Mega Man spin-off, but to me it felt like a breath of fresh air in the increasingly oversaturated roguelike genre (oh, but more on that later).
Streets of Rage 4 is the perfection of a genre that I thought I was completely done with, and one that I think a lot of other people were done with too. Belt-scrollers made a certain amount of game design sense when they were first introduced in arcades, what with the goal being to collect as many of your quarters as possible—but the gameplay hook suffers tremendously when there's no tangible cost to failing. And yet the team behind SoR4 breathed new life into the genre, via incredible art, animations, and music. Most importantly of course is how it feels, and the deep combat system allows players of all different skill and interest levels to get exactly as much out of the game as they put into it. A friend played this in a much deeper way than I did, chaining combos across entire levels at times—whereas I just played through twice—and yet we both came away from it completely satisfied. This is a masterpiece of the genre.
Clubhouse Games is a sequel of sorts to the DS game of the same name. The first thing I think of when recalling this game is just the incredible amount of craft that clearly went into making it. From the heavy thud of the Hanafuda cards being forcefully plopped down to the sound of marbles jostling in Mancala, every little detail of this game has been thoughtfully executed. Sure, there's a few games I played once and never wanted to play again, but mostly this collection is just an outstanding bang for your buck. It also succeeds as a kind of virtual history lesson/tour of the best and most-loved tabletop games from around the world; and, especially during a pandemic, who could say no to that?
Sakuna snuck up on me towards the end of the year. Apparently it was first announced as a PS4 exclusive, but Nintendo saw it and rightfully made a big effort to get it on its platform as well. The gameplay mostly consists of an incredibly satisfying loop of starting the day by tending to your rice field, in full 3D life sim style, and then going out and exploring levels in fairly fast-paced 2D action/platforming levels. During the 2D parts, you'll find supplies that help your rice field, and by completing tasks there you'll unlock better equipment and weapons for the platforming levels. On top of all of that, there's a night/day cycle as well as a seasonal one, which vastly changes the type and amount of work you need to do in the field each day. That might sound like a lot, but it all snaps together wonderfully, leading me to quite a few "well I'll just play one more day" long nights. Oh and I haven't even mentioned the clear reverence shown towards the surprisingly complicated act of actually growing rice—every step of the way is a different kind of mini-game, essentially, and I ended up taking a lot of pride in making the best rice that I could. This is one I'll definitely still be playing into the new year.
***RUNNER UP*** Hades
Everyone's favorite horned-up mythological roguelike ensnared me pretty deeply when the full version was released on Switch this year. I had seen snippets of it on Early Access, which was enough to pique my interest, but I was still caught pretty off-guard by just how incredible this game actually turned out to be.
I haven't talked much about story in these write-ups so far, but it's clearly the first place to start with Hades. If I had to pick one thing to set it apart from similar games, it would be how perfectly the notion of dying and restarting is to the central story of Zagreus. Every time you die in an unsuccessful run, which will be a lot early on, you're encouraged by NPCs to try again—and not only that, it makes thematic sense with—and in fact is central to—the story of the game. This completely removes the sting of feeling underpowered and kind of helpless in your early runs, and to keep playing and powering through it.
The pantheon of gods in this game will show up and offer to help by way of boons. These grant you temporary new abilities, which not only vary depending on which weapon you've picked, but will also combine with and modify other boons that you pick up in the run—not unlike the weapon synergy of Binding of Isaac, for example. The gods have their own agenda, of course, but with some experience you'll start to favor certain builds over others, and to try to and build towards a fully-optimized set of skills to tackle the underworld. Then again, sometimes you'll get something you've never seen before, and change up your tactics on the fly. It's all very rewarding and incredibly replayable.
As with a lot of roguelikes, you do carry some things forward from run to run. As you unlock all of the weapons, purchase upgrades and new abilities, and naturally start to learn how the game works and improve your own strategy, you slowly begin to feel much stronger and eventually, well, god-like. The near-perfect difficulty curve gives players of all skill levels complete control over how hard or easy to make the game for themselves. This carries over perfectly into the "Pact of Punishment" system that's unlocked after your first successful run, which lets you dial up the difficulty to frankly fiendish levels in order to, first and foremost, keep skilled players engaged, but also to provide a ton of "end-game" content for those that want to keep playing.
And really, you'll want to keep playing. The first ending is just the beginning, as the story compels you to keep playing and see how everyone's stories pan out. The NPCs are incredibly well-written and the voice-acting more than lives up to the lines they're given. I was completely invested in these characters and the fates they would have to reckon with by the end.
I got my tenth clear—the first one to roll credits—fittingly enough on attempt #69 (nice). This seemed like where the game naturally "ended," and I put it down—even though there's still a ton of previously mentioned end-game stuff I could do in the game if I wanted. But the end of Zag's main story felt so pitch-perfect, and so earned by the experience with the game overall, that I decided to leave it on that perfect high note.
***GOTY*** Animal Crossing: New Horizons
This wasn't my first Animal Crossing game (it was, I think, my...fourth?), but it was the first Animal Crossing game that a lot of my friends played, and that alone made for a different experience than I've had with the series before. In the early days of quarantine, we were visiting each other's islands every day, trading items, sharing insider tips on the Stalk Market, and just generally enjoying the game in a social way that was suddenly not allowed in day to day real life.
For the most part, that lasted for about a month. Maybe two. But I kept playing, every day, for a few reasons. First was that I have a lot of time with this series, and more or less knew what to expect going in. I didn't get disappointed when Nook's Shop was mostly just stocking items I already had, for instance. But more importantly, I knew not to burn myself out on it early on. And look, I know there's no "right" or "wrong" way to play a game, but Animal Crossing (at least to me) seems unique in that the gameplay is so clearly designed to be enjoyed in 20-30 minute, daily chunks. There's just not that much to *do* after a half hour or so, but I was seeing friends' hours totals in triple digits after just a few weeks.
Two other things unique to this entry helped keep it persistent for me, I think. One, Nintendo committed to and delivered on a regular update schedule, which kept things fresh (and safe from the naughty time travelers of the world, even). Pretty much every month, something brand new happened, and it was enough to keep my interest even after I'd donated every fossil to Blathers.
The second, and much bigger thing by far, was that my daughter started playing. She named our island ("Turtlerock") and moved in on day one. We'd talk about villagers—which ones were our favorites, which ones we wouldn't mind seeing move away—and collaborated on the city-planning of our island. I played first, and was therefor the "primary resident" or whatever it's called, but I never made a big decision without checking in with her first. We're both invested in it, and it's been a fun experience to share together over the course of the year. Hell, we even counted down the last seconds of 2020 together in local co-op.
Sure, my house is paid off, I have two million bells in the bank, and my museum is roughly 95% filled out—but I still play this pretty much every day. It's become a ritual. Usually right after work, which happens to be the best light on the island; sometimes later at night, especially during a meteor shower; and on the weekends frequently in the morning—but no matter when I'm playing, the remarkable thing to me is that here we are, nine months later—still in quarantine, and still playing Animal Crossing.

4 Instagrammers Show Us How Many Photos They Took Before Nailing ’The Shot
160
The lives of Instagram style stars and influencers may seem wildly glamorous to us regular folk, but a lot of work goes into making their feeds look effortlessly picture-perfect.
What we typically see is a glossy image that took more than a few minutes to produce, and that more than likely has been edited in some way. What we don’t see are the rows and rows of images on someone’s camera roll showing exactly how many photos they took before they were satisfied, or the silly outtakes that might not be the most flattering.
But they exist! In fact, here’s proof from my own camera:
Julia Brucculieri
I really don't know how I'm not an influencer.
(If you’re curious, here’s the final photo I chose.)
In our quest to find out what it takes to get “the shot,” we asked four Instagrammers to get real about their photo-taking habits. Below, they share a glimpse of their camera rolls, their outtakes, and of course, their final products.

Halverson: “We spent about 20 minutes trying to get ‘the shot’ at this horse ranch, with my husband shooting. I originally wanted to be leaning on the horse, but quickly realized the horse was not interested in being used as a photo prop. At one point I think he may have nipped at me, hence why I was a bit skittish. In the end we went with a shot of me walking away from said horse at a safe distance.”
Of over 200 photos, Halverson posted the one below:

Short: “I always say that people only see about 10 percent of the work that us bloggers do (and that might even be generous). There’s so much work that goes into creating that one ‘effortless’ looking photo that it really is anything but.
Trying to freeze a moment in time is no easy feat ― whether the wind is blowing your hair in your face and [it’s] sticking to your lipstick, or your clothing is askew, or some passerby is in the frame, or the photo or something in the photo is blurry. You really do need to shoot a bunch to ensure you get the right shot because obstacles are all around you.
When it comes to getting that perfect photo, I think it comes down to two things: the emotion you want to convey, and an overall feel of effortlessness. You never want a photo to feel forced.
Almost always, though, it’s the candid shots or the ones in between poses that are the ones that I choose to post, and so my boyfriend (also my photographer) always snaps away and we always end up getting a shot we like. That’s not to say there aren’t some mishaps or funny ones along the way.
[For this photo,] I knew wanted to inspire a road trip look, so having the car in the frame with the tourist attraction in the back was the right fit, also the lighting of this photo was just perfect.”
Of over 60 photos, Short posted the photo below:

Combs said she captured about 50 photos before choosing the final one.
Combs: “You know how bloggers say, ‘It’s not all glamorous’? For me, at this stage in my life, it’s actually zero percent glamorous. I’m usually schlepping my tripod around trying to find some decent light that will work with the iPhone because there is usually a combo of one or two kids and a husband impatiently waiting in the car.
Every time I use this method, I’m praying there isn’t someone secretly filming me to show the world how ridiculous I am. I use an app that takes 10 photos at a time so my camera roll is usually three blank photos while I’m running back to my mark, a couple photos of my back on my way there, three that I can maybe use, and a couple accidental closeups as I run back to the tripod. Then there are also a bunch of the street and the car as I’m getting back in.
Sometimes I get lucky and a passerby strolls through the shot (some apologetic, some angry)! ‘This sounds terrible,’ you say! ‘Why do you do this to yourself?’ you ask? As crazy as it seems after the scenario I described, I enjoy doing this! I truly enjoy putting outfits together. I also thrive on this chaos and the feeling of finally getting that shot and cementing my outfit into my history. I always said I would love to have #ootds of my great grandma, so maybe [my great grandkids] will like to see mine someday.”
Of about 50 photos, Combs went with the photo below:

Steffy Degreff aka @steffy: 20+ photos

Left: Steffy Degreff's phone camera roll. Right: One of her outtakes, in which the wind had some fun with her hair.
Degreff: “I am actually not the kind of blogger who takes 300 or even 100 images to get ‘the shot’ but we do always take at least 20! In this particular photo, my hair kept blowing really funny into my face, so we had to snap until the wind stopped. I also really wanted to be taking a sip of the bubble tea, and sometimes photos sipping a drink can go very wrong! I liked the final picture because my hair was still blowing, and it was a bit imperfect, but showed the dress and bag really well!”
As Degreff mentioned, she generally has at least 20 photos to choose from. In this instance, the image below was her final product:
