the thing about disco elysium and the scope we see the world through is that its both crushingly vast and painfully minute. you spend the game walking into lore dumps, bombarded with information about the big wide world, but the entire action takes place within a 3 km radius. the reason and solution for everything is out of your scope. the potential large-scale conflict that the union is egging on is something we will never know the conclusion of, the motive of the murderer goes back to events that you werent even alive for, etc. i think the church quest embodies this. you're confronted with the global, unknowable phenomenon (the pale) through the micro perspective (2mm hole in the world) and in the meanwhile you meet the ravers, and the church dwellers, and you find out all about their little problems and situations, about acele's family, about how andre is balding, about noid's strange ideas. im just gesturing vaguely atp but like. you know what i mean. i think its beautiful. the world is too big to fix but there are always small things that make it worth living in. i think thats the main thing i took away from elysium
