In 1988, Games Workshop released Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness, the first of two exhaustive sourcebooks on Chaos. It’s an all-purpose sourcebook for two of the four ruinous powers: Khorne and Slaanesh. There are army lists for Warhammer Fantasy Battles and information one demons that is useful for GMs of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this book is that it serves as the introduction of Chaos into the 40,000 universe, revealing that warpspace, the dimension used for fast interstellar travel, is in fact, the Realm of Chaos — the same hostile reality the Empire of the Old World struggled to banish from our own in 40K is regularly exploited as a highway system.
In the worlds of the Warhammer universe, Chaos is the ultimate opponent. In Warhammer Fantasy, I feel like Chaos represents the human impulses that undermine civil society (the veneer of which in Old World is incredibly thin). Whatever the faults of the Empire, it is preferable to the violent dissolution of Chaos, which takes the role of a Dark Power pretty typical of fantasy lit. In 40k, though, things aren’t so simple. The Empire is a fascist monolith and Chaos, repugnant though it may seem, is the antidote for that oppressively ordered “civilization.” Sort of. This conception of the late ’80s is way more interesting and complex than I ever really gave Warhammer credit for (and I think has been consistently eroded away in the name of uncomplicated commerce in the years since).
Anyway, what amazing books. Just jammed with stuff. Lists, mutation rules, all the traitor legions associated with Slaanesh and Khorne. Above all, though, the art. So much, so gnarly, by a GW murder’s row: Ian Miller, Tony Ackland, Gary Chalk, Martin McKenna, John Blanche, Russ Nicholson and like a dozen more, with John Sibbick on the cover. If there was a fever-pitched height of GW aesthetic, its Realm of Chaos. (Also, bonus: the gargoyle from HeroQuest makes quite a few appearances!).

For the same reason that a null doesn’t feed into the warp when they experience emotions; they lack a “soul”, or psychic presence in warpspace, so there’s nowhere for the emotions to go, so to speak.

rubicon (the star system) is located at the very edge of the solar neighbourhood, hence "frontier system." that puts it roughly 30ly away from sol. i really, really love c as the speed limit of the universe but also love interstellar travel being possible so i see armored core humanity as having figured out a technology like warp gates that let you fold distances between two connected points, with transit between always taking exactly 22 hours no matter how far (or close) the gates are in realspace.
like 40k and endless skies, warpspace (maybe they call it the strangereal or something as a fun nod to ace combat since im still on that kick) makes you go a little crazy if you spend too long in it, and sometimes hideous, inexplicable accidents occur. event horizon shit. 40k chaos god shit. but having the entire galaxy 22 hours away is too valuable to pass up.
cosmic horror aside, i also like them because in order to utilize the gates, you have to build them first. the xylem really did travel 30+ years through realspace to land on rubicon III (i think the rubiconians have their own name for the planet, but i haven't thought on it too much) and build both their cities and the gate to facilitate travel.
that means when the fires happened, the gate was destroyed. all communications, cargo, and commuters abruptly stopped. after a year of no contact, the corps grew concerned about their precious coral and sent a rescue fleet on a 30 year journey to figure out what the fuck was up. this would become the pca. their first priority was investigating and containing what happened to rubicon; once under control, they were to reopen the gate. so it took something like 30-35 years for anyone outside rubicon to learn what even happened.

"SOME OF THESE PIECES ARE NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO GO TOGETHER LIKE THIS! This is NOT fine! I fear this calls for drastic measures..."
She gave no explanation of what such measures would be, but the fact that every psyker in their immediate surroundings started to feel like they were standing close to the Well of Eternity might be an indicator to what she was about to attempt. Any nearby demon or warpspawn would be overcome with the instinct to flee, lest they'd experience true death as their very pattern would be made undone. Perhaps not the smartest thing to do while with a demon primarch in a cramped enclosed space...

*quietly considers if bonking the Primarch unconscious with her staff would make the situation less awkward*
Magnus folds her wings as tightly against herself as she can and looks down at Soraka. Both of them could easily get out of this situation with their abilities. She wondered why she, personally, decided to get in an elevator in the first place. She always hated how cramped they were. Especially with her stature. "This damn thing always seems to vex me whenever I get in one." She muttered, mostly to herself.
#soraka takes only miniscule amounts of power from the warp#but she takes it from a level so deep it's exotic nature is as hostile to regular warpspace as warpspace is to reality#for magnus this must look like how someone pulled a nuke from their pocket#as I said she WILL attempt to help and it will not be pretty#have you tried turning your magnus off and back on again?

Wh40k has a term, "realspace" (the material universe; differentiated from "Warpspace", the immaterial dimension), that I am strongly considering adopting. The thing is... I'd be using it in the exact opposite way -- "realspace" (the immaterial dimension in which the Configuration exists; differentiated from "consensus reality", the material universe).
#[laudarant.]#my point of origin is my basis for reality; the various universes i am emanated into are all equally <created/engineered/fictional>#including this one 🖤

wip of the first page. Making the ray shifting look a bit similar to trans warpspace seen in beast media. CHALDEAS was kinda hard to draw with the whole rotating halos around it, with the little screens showing off locations that major tf events occur in as singularities

Chapter six, training, And pizza.
The mountaintops of Williams dimension are still drenched in the light of the full moon, as the sounds of battle echo through the valleys, as William is training G in the ways of combat
G strikes down at William, but he jumps out of the way. And as G lands, William kicks him into another mountain.
G got out of the wall and jumped back at him, bouncing from mountain to mountain.
He fired bones at him, which he dodged, but while he was distracted, G swung at him with the strings, so he jumped as G was about to hit him, and then he kicked him into the ground.
As William pulled G out of the ground he said "wow, you're doing a lot better than the first day we'd trained." As he dusted off G, and made sure he didn't hurt him
"Ugh, it just still seems so hopeless to defeat you though" G spoke annoyedly, as he stretched.
"Remember, the goal isn't meant to be "defeat me", it's meant to be improvement, which you have in spades." William said as he dusted himself off.
"I know but… it doesn't feel that way" G said, sitting down, as he got ready to eat his lunch
"Oh, you hungry?" William said as he sat down too.
"Yeah, it's just been a lot," G replied.
"Hey, would you wanna eat at my palace?" William suggested, putting his hand on G's shoulder. "I don't cook much but well, I can, if you don't expect anything magnificent."
"Are you sure?" G asked as William got up and said "of course! I mean I've been teaching you after all, gotta make sure you're not hungry. Come on, let's go." As G got up, and said "sure."
They both flew over on Williams' horned blaster, over the hills as they came to the large castle, weaving in and out of the mountain, some rooms visible, some not.
As they entered the hallway through the columns, they went down the hall, and after entering a smaller chamber, they went to the right leading to a hall with a large table. It seems to be dusty from lacking use, however.
"Whoa! How did I never know about this room before? Your place is massive!" G spoke into the echoing halls of the dining room.
"Y-yeah… I don't use most of it often" William said, grabbing his arm, as he continued down to the kitchen.
"You can do whatever you want, I'll try to make an actual meal, I'm used to just making cookies." He continued as he walked to the kitchen.
"Well I don't have much to do, I could help you make food." G suggested.
"Huh? Well what do you know how to cook?" William asked, as G perked up
"I can make pizza! Hunter and Nightmare taught me." As he walked over.
"Well I don't have those ingredients… Give me a sec." William said, disappearing into the warpspace.
After about five minutes he comes back with all of the ingredients he would need.
"Alright, let's make pizza I guess." He said as he smiled lightly.
As they headed into the kitchen, G saw a rather normal sized kitchen, as surprising as it is with the size of everything else, you would expect a kitchen the size of a restaurant's, however it isn't.
"This is my kitchen. We should get started! We'll need mixing bowls right?" William said as he used telekinesis to grab multiple bowls, cutting boards and a baking sheet, alongside a rolling pin and any other things they would need.
"Woah! That telekinesis is cool, can I learn that?" G asked, as William laughed,
"Well, probably. My control of telekinesis is far greater than even others with my same power, so it is unpredictable how good you could be with it." He responded.
"What do we do now?" He asked, as they made lunch.
Once they finished making food, they sat down, and ate.
"It would appear we have both learned something today,l." William said as he giggled and ate
"Yeah… I guess so" G said as they ate.
- later -
They're training again on the mountains, G threw bones, and fired blasters, to no avail.
So he summoned dozens of bones behind him, attached them to strings, flinging them at William, and as he was about to dodge, G surrounded the area with blasters, trapping him.
And as all the bones landed, he celebrated, "YES! I did it!" As William responded,
"Well, it could use some work, but I might be able to start using magic soon" he winked as he got up from the ground.
"Alright, I think that's enough for today bud, you can go home." William spoke, smiling.
As G said his goodbyes and went off to his home, William sat in-between the columns of the hall, as he somberly stared out into the infinite expanse.

Starfleet likes to name things with themes. For instance, all the California-class second contact ships in Lower Decks are named for cities in California.
So, watsonianly and/or doylianly someone decided that rivers are somehow symbolic of DS9's mission. But I'm sitting here trying to think of why and I'm stumped. Because the wormhole is like a river in warpspace?
Any reason all the runabouts are rivers?

Talon of Horus thoughts (spoilers)
Why did I read this: r/grimdark recommended the book with “Love the part where they find a crashed Imperial ship ... and the slow realization they've been in Warpspace a very, very long time. When they hear that the Imperium worships the Emperor … that gets a solid ten minute laugh out of all of them.” (turns out thats the 2nd book)
What I enjoyed: the first half of the book is Khayon’s slice of life (going through the motions) while living in grimdarkhell, then he meets Abbadon and he’s suddenly ride or die for this guy.
I haven’t read anything before with Khayon or Abbadon but I thought this was a good intro, so it's been interesting to see other people's opinons who have read a lot of TSons books.
Notes:
The book opens with Khayon saying every word is true yet he immediately follows it with “I had nothing left to lose. Everything I’d treasured was dust at the mercy of history’s winds”, which is proven untrue over the course of the book. Khayon sacrifices or loses a lot in service to Abbadon and the Black Legion (what remains of his sister, his ship, his Power Axe Saern, his wolf Gyre). It has me wondering how much is this Khayon lying to himself vs the author seeing it differently.
Khayon has a lot of musing on daemons and the warp, how it works which I found an interesting contrast to the few other CSM books I've read.
Abaddon gets introduced as this dude whose been living alone with hair he's stopped taking care of, just accumulating hoards of stuff and picking up homebrew as a hobby. I don't know if depressed is the right word to characterize him for all he reminds me of myself. He was described with "a smiling voice" and I was surprised by how personable he was since I only knew him through fandom flanderization.
I wasn't expecting the twist that Nefertari had been dead this whole time, but I suppose it's yet another aspect of the past that Khayon clings onto discounting how it's been transformed. I really got the sense in the first part of the book that Khayon found himself in a limbo (just like the limbo hell he's physically trapped in) where the past torments him but he can't let go and move forwards until he meets Abbadon.
I've mostly read Alpha Legion, Night Lords, and Iron Warriors books for CSM so idk why I expected loyalty but from the beginning the Ezekarion is lying to each other. Makes me wonder what lies Khayon is being told.
“This is what it is like to live within a Nine Legions warband. To see things that cannot be possible and pursue answers that may never come. To wonder over the state of your brothers’ souls, knowing they doubt your sanity in return. Loyalty is everything, yet trust is the one thing we so rarely have. ‘Nothing,’ I replied. ‘A momentary distraction. All is well.’ That was the first time I lied to Ezekyle. He knew I lied, yet I sensed no anger or threat of reprisal. What I sensed from him was a slow pulse of approval. A test passed. An offer of trust given and accepted. I was not lying to him, after all. We were both lying to the Justaerin.”
Is Abbadon's main strategy throwing large spaceships at a planet and calling it speartip? I’m not sure if this was published before he did this at Cadia with the Blackstone fortress but he does it here as well with Khayon’s help.
Wasn’t expecting Cloned!Horus in the last 20 pages of the book. It feels like Abaddon has dad issues but in large parts from Horus’ failure at the Siege and being turned into a walking Chaos puppet. It's interesting Abaddon says this:
“I was fortunate that day. Not just because I survived a battle with a demigod that should never have been fought, but because I heard Abaddon’s last words to his father. With a slow, smooth withdrawal, he pulled the Talon clear of his father’s body, and the moment before Horus fell – the moment before the light finally went out in the primarch’s eyes – Abaddon whispered five soft words. ‘I am not your son.”
But then makes the Black Legion symbol the Eye of Horus and takes up Horus' signature weapon the Talon of Horus and leaves it unchanged. I want to read a lot of Abbadon Daddy issues meta posts

+++++ || INQUISITOR QUIXOS || +++++
By the age of one hundred and seventy six, Inquisitor Quixos had been responsible for the tracking down and punishment of 1,800 heretics, mutants and aliens. In the course of carrying out his duties on Lackan XV, Quixos was wounded by a daemon, part of its claw shearing off and embedding in his heart. Although he vanquished the daemon, Quixos found that any attempt to remove the piece of claw would kill him. In time, he learnt that the claw’s presence acted as a link to the Warp, increasing his psychic potential, although it also slowly corrupted his body. Intrigued by this, Quixos took it upon himself to further investigate the benefits that could be gained through the use of Chaos energy, earning himself something of a reputation as a rogue element amongst several other Inquisitors.
When in his early two hundreds, Quixos encountered the Mystic Path, a organisation of traders and nobles from Maginor, who were using certain Warp-related items to improve their influence and increase demand for their goods. Rather than summarily destroying the cartel, Quixos observed their practices, which their forefathers had passed down to them for several generations. Quixos was further convinced that the energy of Chaos could be harnessed in a correct fashion, that it was not intrinsically evil in itself, but was put to evil ends by wrongdoers. For several years, Quixos built up a relationship with the Mystic Path, handing several other artefacts to them for investigation. It was these experiments that were first to lead Quixos into direct conflict with another Inquisitor.
Inquisitor Helgrund spent nearly the first three decades of his Inquisitorial vocation tracing the ancient grimoire known as the Malus Codicium. When he discovered its resting place was deep within the bowels of the Library of Othella on Zandrini Prime, he was sure his quest was over. He was dismayed to discover that a mysterious individual, only months before, had removed the Malus Codicium from the vaults. The text deals with the conjuration of entities from Warpspace, and the zealous Helgrund was determined that it should be destroyed. If it had fallen into the hands of a worshipper of the Dark Gods, the secrets it contained could unleash devastation and ruin upon a whole world. Further months of tireless endeavour brought Helgrund to Maginor and the Mystic Path.
What Helgrund found appaled him. This sect wantonly used cursed artefacts, glorifying in their depravity. He was sure it was they who had stolen the Malus Codicium. With a vengeance, Inquisitor Helgrund set about destroying the Mystic Path, torturing and interrogating the Chaos worshippers he hunted down, following the trail of corruption. After his pogrom had lasted for a week, Helgrund began to run into some truly disturbing adversaries. He fought against creatures half-possessed by daemons, as well as cultists armed with weapons that fired a bizarre, mutating projectile that rotted flesh upon impact. Helgrund and his followers fought their way to the unholy shrine of the Mystic Path, beset by mutants and psykers and other abominations against the Emperor. Helgrund, aided by the several Redemptionist Priests in his retinue and an arco-flagellant released to him by the Cardinal of Maginor, set about cleansing the mountain fastness of the Mystic Path with fire and blade. He was utterly horrified to find, at its centre, a fellow Inquisitor; deformed of body and driven insane by the lure of Chaos. Vowing to rid the galaxy of such a perverse guardian of the Emperor, Helgrund launched his ferocious and merciless attack.
Quixos was astounded by this assault by such an inexperienced Inquisitor, and considered him an illeducated upstart. His great works had already borne much fruit, particularly the two Daemonhosts in his entourage; one a vessel for the daemon Cherubael, the other for an entity he hadn’t quite identified but was known as Prophaniti. They had assisted him in the crushing of several anti-Imperial cults in the sector, their daemon-powered strength and abilities an invaluable aid in combat. He had also mastered the art of creating Soulguards – individuals who were psychic vacuums that could absorb magic and protect those nearby from the baneful energies of Chaos. The confrontations that followed were fought bitterly, first one side than the other gaining an advantage, until finally Quixos and Helgrund clashed in personal combat. Helgrund wielded a mighty force hammer, charged with faith and purity, while Quixos’ daemonblade contained the ferocity of Kharnagar the Deathly, a being he had defeated some decades earlier and whose essence had been bound into a sword during Quixos’ recent experiments. The two battled long and hard, some Inquisitors having since likened it to the fight between Horus and the Emperor at the birth of the Imperium.
They traded heavy blows, each summoning mental powers to blast the other, shredding the minds of those nearby with flickering warp energies. Helgrund called upon the Emperor’s blessings and drove hard at Quixos, his force hammer smashing through his foe’s psychic shields and warp-wards. But Quixos was not done, invoking the full power of Kharnagar, he drove his daemonblade into Helgrund’s guts, causing him to explode into flames and immolate. For another century, Quixos continued his research and his findings greatly aided him in his quests against the enemies of the Emperor. On Danakin 2, his channelling of the daemon Diabolan allowed him to breach the defences of the Ork stronghold of Mekrok, whilst many a daemonic foe immune to mortal blades was felled by Kharnagar. Finally his opponents within the Inquisition united against him, and Inquisitor Eisenhorn declared Quixos and all his works Heretic and Extremis Diabolus in 342.M35. He was hunted down and executed by a cell of five Inquisitors led by Eisenhorn three years later.
Yet there are still those who would say that Quixos was right, for he slew many daemons and followers of Chaos, some say turning their own power against them. But there are those who say that nothing holy or good can come from Chaos, and he was nothing more than a pawn for the warring Dark Gods. He had been cursed by Chaos from the start on Lackan XV, his association with daemonic entities and mutants were proof of his corruption.

"When I was a Neophyte
My father took me in the Eye of Terror
To see the Black Crusade
He said, "Son, when you grow up
Will you be the leader of the traitors,
The Lost and the Damned?"
He said, "Will you defeat them?
The daemons, and all the non-believers
Of the true Gods of the Warp?"
"Because one day, I'll leave you a great plan
To lead you to the glory,
To lead the black crusade"
- Ezekiel Abbadon, on how he became Warmaster
Abaddon totally stole those lines from popular Emperor’s Children band Romancing My Chemicals, whose lead singer was arrested in international warpspace for literally trying to romance chemicals. By sticking his winky in a vat of promethium. MULTIPLE indecent exposure charges.
