#wally's tommy begins fic

I took a little break from "you still have my heart (i'll get it back)" to try and refresh the creative juices this morning, (I was really flagging) and wrote a little bit of a Sal/Tommy fic inspired by my tags on this post. It's also maybe a Tommy Begins type fic?

Anyway! Here's an unedited snippet of the first time Tommy meets Gerrard.

Firehouse 118’s Captain is Vincent Gerrard. He’s tall, and mean, and he approves of Tommy the second he walks in. “You serve?” Gerrard asks, somehow looming over Tommy despite them both standing and Gerrard being a few inches shorter. “Yes, sir. Army, pilot, full ten years.” Gerrard gives him an appraising look. “Left, did you? Of your own accord?” Gerrard assess Tommy, from top to bottom, eyes lingering as he does, and for a moment Tommy wonders what he’s looking for. He wonders if Gerrard can see what Thomas Sr. could see all those years ago, that led to evenings spent at church with the pastor, and his parents divorcing, and military academy, and ten years in the army. Tommy licks along the top of his mouth, in lieu of swallowing, and straightens up. Feet spread, back straight, arms looped behind, not making eye contact and staring ahead.  “Yes, sir. Honourably.” Gerrard hums. “Didn’t want to go back? We’re at war now, son.” Tommy takes a deep breath because he knows these questions. He has prepared for these questions. Tommy has been asked by his buddies if he was going to reenlist, they always need good pilots and Tommy is one of the best. “No, sir, my mother is unwell.” Tommy knows this isn’t a lie, but it feels like one anyway, and his heart beats erratically. “She needs me stateside and with both feet on the ground more than the country needs me in a helicopter over the desert.” Gerrard grunts, his moustache wiggles as he sniffs, and for a moment Tommy expects the man to be displeased. Except, the man surprises him. “Good.” Gerrard nods. “Family is important, and your mother will appreciate it, even if the country doesn’t.”

I can normally deal with people not reading the comics, because not everyone has the means to or even the desire to, and that's okay! The cartoons and a lot of the shows are great, and I can typically adjust to the different continuities being referenced quick enough.

But the one thing that gets me every time in fics written by people who aren't familiar with the comics is the timeline. It is always incredibly wonky and all over the place and just. Incorrect. Sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me 🙃, and others I have to leave right now immediately.

So in the interest of saving myself (and perhaps others) a ???? reaction in the future, here is a (very) rough and non-exhaustive order of events for the Bat Clan. The time between these events are variable, but this is the general order of things.

Thomas and Martha Wayne are murdered

Bruce goes on his training trip

Bruce comes back and begins his whole I Am The Night shtick

The Grayson family is murdered

Bruce fosters Dick

Dick debuts as Robin

Justice League/ Super Friends/ whatever group is formed

Dick forms the Teen Titans with Donna, Garth, Roy, and Wally.

Dick leaves Gotham (either for college, or because of an argument with Bruce)

Sometimes more Titans things happen. They also break up at some point

Raven forms the second iteration of the Teen Titans to fight her father. The team is comprised of Dick, Raven, Donna, Wally, Kori, Gar, and Vic.

Jason steals the tires off the Batmobile, thwarts his own grandmother's attempts at robbing a museum, and is adopted by Bruce. He is also made Robin - Note that oftentimes Dick is still Robin at this time as well.

Babs gets shot by the Joker for her dad and Bruce's man pain. She becomes Oracle as a result.

Jason and Bruce have a fight, and Jason goes to find his biological mother.

Jason is betrayed by his supposed mother and murdered by the Joker.

Tim shows up and does his "Batman needs Robin" Thing.

Jason crawls himself out of his grave and promptly gets hit by a car. Don't worry, we'll check in with him later.

Tim's mom is murdered and his father left in a coma that he eventually recovers from.

Knightfall happens - Bane breaks Bruce's back, Jean-Paul Valley is Batman for a minute and so is Dick.

Contagion happens - some dumbass releases a super plague on the city but it's okay because they make a vaccine that everyone gets because it's 1996 and no one has given Jenny McCarthy the opportunity to start the Anti-Vax movement yet.

Legacy happens - It's break through cases this time but don't worry, they fix it because this is comic books and people have two braincells to rub together.

Dick goes to Blüdhaven!!! This is the big one for me tbh. Please stop putting him in the Blüd while Jason is alive, I beg of you. You're killing me.

Cataclysm happens - a massive earthquake hits Gotham, and it is Very Bad. The US government decides to abandon the city and kill anyone trying to leave or enter after a certain date. Because that's an entirely reasonable thing to do. This leads to.....

No Mans Land - the approximate year that the city was cut off from the rest of the country. Lots of shit happens during this time - Cassandra Cain debuts, Stephanie Brown has her baby, Tim goes to boarding school, Sarah Essen-Gordon dies. If there is the only one comic book arc you read, please let it be this one.

Bruce is framed for the murder of Vesper Fairchild - not really important in the grand scheme of things but I love Vesper and you should too.

Hush happens - basically Tommy Elliot has Problems and also Jason shows up but not really but yest really (hi thank you retcons). It's a thing. Read the wikipedia page it's actually very helpful.

Tim's dad finds out that he's Robin and forces him to retire.

The next couple of things happen right on top of each other so - Blockbuster sets fire to Haly's circus and blows up Dick's apartment building and a bunch of other bad things. Tarantula kills Blockbuster and rapes Dick while he's in shock.

Immediately afterwards War Games starts - Steph starts a gang war to prove her worth to Bruce, gets murdered but not really by Black Mask, it's a whole thing.

Side bar - why did no one warn me about Black Mask killing Orpheus - a Black vigilante - and then impersonating him with full Blackface? Everyone talks about what he did to Steph but I really think we need to talk about what he did to Orpheus. Also if you haven't read War Games yet, here are some accurate trigger warnings for it: blackface, sexualized murder of a teenaged girl, a school shooting where a child dies.

Tim comes back as Robin.

Under the Red Hood happens - Jason comes back to Gotham, kills some guys, tries to kill Tim, does his whole Thing. You've probably seen the movie but I also recommend you read the comics it's v good and every time I read Jason's final speech I start crying.

Damian shows up

Final Crisis happens and Bruce "dies" aka gets lost in time, so the boys duke it out over who gets to be Batman. Tim goes on his murder mystery tour. Jason goes to prison but not before adopting a weird little girl named Sasha. Dick is left with Batman.

Oops turns out Steph isn't dead she's back and she's Batgirl now and low-key co-parenting Damian with Dick. It's very cute.

Cass is off being Black Bat in Hong Kong and I miss her.

Bruce comes back, Tim is Vindicated, Jason escapes prison and rides off into the sunset with Sasha to go Cause Problems on Purpose. Dick steps down from Batman. Damian continues to be a murder baby and I love him.

And that's not nearly everything but close enough for fic writing purposes up until Flashpoint. I definitely missed things, so feel free to add on. I also again beg you - please stop putting Dick in the Blüd when Jason is still alive, it makes my blood pressure spike every time I see it. You're killing me guys. Pls.

Summary: Camp STAR is one of the North East’s most popular science camps.  Every year, young minds arrive to learn and explore.  Unfortunately, a few weeks before the camp was to open for the season, a large explosion in one of the labs and the ensuing fire made the camp uninhabitable.  Not wanting his campers to miss out on their summer, Owner Harrison Wells called up Joe West, Owner of Camp Superflarrow, who he knew was looking to expand the science discovery program at his own camp.

Scrambling off of the bus with all the other teens, Cisco looked around at the crowd of young people spilling from the large, green and white painted vehicles. Something was a little off….

 “Hey, where are all the squirts?” he asked, eyes taking in the crowd. No kids. That was somewhat freaksome.

 Caitlin blinked at him, cocking her head to the side. “Huh? I don’t know, but that is peculiar….”

 “Campers arrive on Saturday, so counselors and CIT’s have a few days to prepare,” a pretty girl in a green camp shirt said with a bright smile. She looked to be about their age and was holding a clipboard in hand. “I’m Iris West. Welcome to Camp Superflarrow.”

 “Campers and counselors come up on different days?” Cisco asked, puzzled. That was not how they did it at STAR.

 “Always,” Iris confirmed with a nod. “Most of our counselors were campers, but occasionally we get someone new. This is a way to let them get oriented, get everyone up to speed on their specialties and do a few last minute prep things to the camp proper.”

 As they walked toward the spot where the bus drivers were piling suitcases and the rest of the luggage, Caitlin nodded. “That makes sense, given that we are the counselors here. The majority of the counselors at STAR were adults,” she told Iris. “I’m Caitlin.”

 “Caitlin Snow?” Iris asked and, upon confirmation, she continued, “We’re bunk mates. Ready to watch over some little Long Creek Girls? Long Creek’s one of the younger groups. Sure, they cry more, but I’ll take sniffles and homesickness over snotty pre-teen attitudes.”

 Cisco, who had more than a few little cousins, had to agree. “Please tell me I’ve got kids too. Cisco Ramon, Francisco”

 Consulting her clipboard, Iris made a so-so gesture. “You’re with the Sequoias, that’s the middles. 8-11 year olds.”

 “I can handle that,” Cisco decided, stopping before the pile of luggage and trying to spot his duffle amongst the mess.

 Caitlin’s coordinating luggage was easy enough to pick out of the pile, but Cisco found himself having more of an issue. Seemingly half of their fellow campers were using duffles that looked just like his.

 “I told you to wrap colorful duct tape around the handles,” Caitlin sighed, watching him combat the mess. Nearby, Leonard Snart was plucking two distinctly marked bags up (passing one to Lisa), and she commented, “See.”

 “Yeah, yeah,” Cisco groused, smiling slightly as Lisa slung her bag over her shoulder and wiggled her fingers at him.

 A shiny maroon Subaru Outback pulled into the lot, parking beside the handful of other trucks and SUV’s (and Dr. Wells’s zippy little sports car).  A blond popped out and Iris beamed, waving and calling out, “Hey, Eddie.  Almost late!”

 “Almost doesn’t count,” he laughed, jogging over to her and dropping a kiss onto her cheek.  “Seems like you’ve got everything in order.”

 “Someone has to,” she chirped, then swatted him with her clipboard.  “Go help Barry and Wally unload the busses.”

 Still grinning, he nodded.  “Yes Dear.”  Then he trotted over to exchange fist bumps with the two boys still hauling bags out of the bottom of the busses.

 “Have my bags even made it out yet?” Cisco wondered, returning to the great duffle hunt of 2017 with a sigh.

  “Hey, Thawne!” Tommy shouted, making Laurel pause her conversation with Sara and both Lance sisters looked over to where the dark haired boy was hailing the blond (who had apparently had a really good year, growth spurt wise). “Dude, any idea what your creeper uncle’s been meeting with my dad, Ollie’s mom and an even creepier albino about?”

 Eddie blinked at him, a befuddled expression on his face. “Eobard? No, he kind of keeps his business dealings to himself.”

 “And you never eavesdrop? You wouldn’t believe the things I overhear my dad….”

 “Knock it off, Tommy,” Laurel chided, playfully slinging her arm around her boyfriend’s neck.

“Maybe Eddie has better things to do than play Nosy Nancy.”

 Tommy took her critique with a shrug. “Sure. Like hitting the gym. You lost a person worth of baby fat and got tall over the school year!”

 “I...uh, I just started working out is all,” Eddie mumbled, cheeks red as he glanced over to where Barry was digging the bags out of the bottom of one of the busses.  “I’ll see you all later.  Gotta go   help Barry with that….”

 He scrambled off, practically diving into the bus.  Sara rolled her eyes at Tommy.  “Nice.  Embarrass the guy.”

 “What?” Tommy asked, laughing as Oliver gave him a playful shove.  “I wasn’t making fun of him.  He lost a lot of weight.”

 “We know, but not everyone likes having people comment on things like that,” Laurel told him as they gathered up their bags and headed into the camp.  They’d all been to camp before and knew the drill.  All counselors would gather inside the gates and find out what cabins they’d be monitoring.  Then they’d have some time to settle their things in their bunks and then there would be a welcome gathering at the All Camp Campfire site near the lake.

 Sara was particularly excited for this summer, as it was her first year as an actual counselor.  The previous summer, she’d been a Counselor in Training (a CIT), like the other 15 year olds.  Laurel and her friends had still treated her like a little kid, but this summer it was going to be different.  Brushing her hair back over her shoulder, she looked around, picking out the familiar faces and identifying newbies.

 There were a lot of new face in the crowd, not necessarily a bad thing.  Transfer campers wouldn’t know her as Laurel’s little sister.  They’d get to know her for who she was and not assume things about her...and, just on first glance, there were some people she might be interested in getting to know a little better!

3.  (The dawn is just beginning to break, bright threads of white light appearing in the dark blue sky, illuminating the LOFT with a soft glow. BARRY and IRIS are in bed, and IRIS - clad in one of BARRY’s t-shirts - is regarding him sympathetically, one hand going up to his bare chest.)

The Highway of Regret (Iris/Barry; T)

4. The taste of herself is strange on Iris’s tongue; somehow she’s grown unused to it after Eddie died and the taste is unusual, a sharp sweetness that she licks away from Barry’s tongue in a messy open-mouthed kiss. It’ll take getting used to, like a lot of things, but she’s not exactly complaining when Barry’s gazing at her like she hung the stars in the night sky herself.

5.  It’s the middle of the night when Iris sighs, turning on her side, wishing she could sleep. Barry’s hand is on her bare hip and he’s asleep on her shoulder, but when she moves he begins to stir, and inwardly Iris groans, then holds her breath as she waits for Barry to wake up.

6.  The sound of Oliver and Mckenna leaving makes Tommy look up briefly from where he’s standing near the dying candles in the dining room as he watches Laurel waving them away. She shuts the door behind them, making her way over to Tommy, just as he blows out the candle so the flickering flames extinguish.

7.  The dawn is just beginning to break when Nyssa steps out of the bathroom, and Laurel watches as she stops for a moment to watch the silver threads of light appear in the sky through the window. Outside, the adhaan begins, sounding almost musical as it rouses worshippers in the early morning. Laurel’s not used to it, even after having served in Beirut, but she decides she likes it. She’s always been an early riser anyway, and there’s something about the way Nyssa sighs contentedly, pulling Laurel’s kimono more firmly around her, that tugs unexpectedly at Laurel’s heartstrings.

8.  (The elevator of the BUNKER reaches the right floor, with LAUREL inside. She’s clad in her Black Canary gear, twirling her bo-staff in her hand absent-mindedly, the other hand holding her mask, and when the doors open she’s greeted with the sound of punches on a sparring dummy. She walks in and finds DIGGLE, bare chest shiny with sweat, punching the dummy.)

9.  The sound of raindrops splattering against the window wakes Barry with a start. He smiles, though, because of the arm wrapped around his waist and the leg curled around his right ankle.

11. Iris shivers as she quietly shuts the door of the bathroom behind her, wishing she had put on more than just Barry’s shirt when she’d gotten up a few minutes ago. She tiptoes back to their new bed, not wanting to wake Barry, but when she comes back inside the bedroom she finds Barry is awake, looking out of the window.

12.  LAUREL: Whatever happens - I still need you in my life. Always will. OLIVER: We’ve gone through too much together for it to be any other way.

13. “I love you, Barry Allen,” Iris tells him, arms still around his neck, and her eyes are alight with something warm and bright.

Barry smiles back, making Iris’s heart soar, as he replies immediately, “I love you, Iris West.”

14.  “God, I’ve missed you,” Barry murmurs to her after they surface from another lovely long kiss. They’re on Iris’s couch, and Iris is straddling Barry’s lap, knees locking him into place.

One Day (Iris/Barry; G)

15. The sound of the shower running greets Oliver as he pads barefoot across the cold tiles of his bathroom floor.

“Hey,” he calls, and he can’t see her face yet but he doesn’t need to; he can hear the smile in Laurel’s voice as she replies.

My Sweet Dream (Oliver/Laurel; E)

16. It’s late, almost eleven o’clock, when Iris finally gets to her feet and says she’s going home.

“‘Kay, honey,” Joe says, stifling a yawn with his hand.

17.  It’s a little after ten p.m. when Iris walks up the street to the Wests’ house and opens the door. The streetlamp flickers a little behind her, and the sky is clear save for a thin sheet of cloud that half-conceals the moon. She shuts the door carefully behind her. She wants to surprise Barry – she knows her dad isn’t in (she just saw him working late at the precinct) and Wally’s out with Jesse, she’s pretty sure.

18. “We don’t have to,” Laurel says, but she doesn’t move from her position on her bed, her knees anchoring Oliver into place on her bed as she straddles him.

Ollie shakes his head.

19.  The tears are still in Iris’s eyes when she knocks on Barry’s door tentatively, phone still in hand. Hastily she wipes her eyes just before Barry opens the door to her.

Moving On (Iris/Barry; G)

20.  The living room is warm, the couch cosy beneath her, the wine they’re drinking sweet on Iris’s tongue. She meets his eyes, smiles, and there’s something beautiful about the way his eyes light up in the glow of the candles around them that makes it hard for her to speak.

Kiss Me (like you want to be loved) (Iris/Barry; M)

patterns: um, idk? I like describing settings, but I also like starting a fic medias res. I’m not sure what is more effective tbh. also my nsfw fics thankfully don’t start off nsfw, for the most part, so there’s nothing cringey in here, thank god. also somehow I started writing olicity again, like, whut?
