Facebook ci ascolta?

Questo è lo script del mio intervento durante l’incontro di Open TOAST! La comunicazione raccontata da chi la fa con Andrea W. Castellanza e Sebastian Paolo Righi (autori del podcast Bistory) organizzato in collaborazione con Hagam. “Podcast mon amour” si è tenuto il 23 ottobre 2019.

C’è dibattito: parliamo di microfoni, pixel di tracciamento, dati e femtech.

Vi è mai capitato di parlare con un amico di un viaggio che vi piacerebbe tanto fare o della necessità di cambiare auto e dopo poche ore vedere su Facebook degli annunci pubblicitari proprio su un tour operator specializzato in viaggi in Nepal e un sito che ti aiuta a trovare la tua auto nuova?

A tanti, tantissimi, sembra proprio che Facebook usi il microfono dello smartphone per ascoltare le nostre conversazioni e mostrarci annunci pubblicitari basati su ciò che è stato detto ad alta voce.

Ma è davvero così? Facebook ci ascolta? Risposta breve: NO.

Addirittura Mark Zuckerberg l’ha definita una conspiracy theory (teoria della cospirazione) durante la sua audizione di aprile 2018 davanti alla Commissione del Senato degli Stati Uniti. La stessa audizione in cui ha spiegato al senatore Peters come fa Facebook ad essere un servizio gratuito per le persone: ospita la pubblicità.

Dicevamo: perché è falso dire che Facebook ci ascolta? Principalmente perché sarebbe un procedimento troppo costoso quello di registrare le conversazioni di migliaia di persone, si tratta di una mole di dati incredibile. Senza contare che anche per i telefoni degli utenti, avere il microfono costantemente attivo vorrebbe dire un consumo di dati e di batteria impossibile da sostenere, che quindi se ne accorgerebbero.

Supponiamo però che i nostri telefoni siano però davvero così potenti da poterlo fare. Le comuni conversazioni sono piene di sfumature, di sarcasmo, di non-detti e di doppi sensi, e credere che un’intelligenza artificiale possa capirle per sfruttarle a fini pubblicitari vuol dire probabilmente «dare a queste tecnologie più credito (o più paranoia) di quella che meritano», come sostiene per García Martinez, ex product manager di Facebook.

Potremmo dire però “e Alexa, Siri, Google? Sono dispositivi dotati di microfono e nascono proprio per ascoltare le nostre richieste”. Non è che anche loro ci ascoltano in tutto quello che diciamo? In realtà gli assistenti vocali hanno un supporto che sì, è sempre in ascolto ma si attiva esclusivamente quando intercetta la wake word, tipo Ok Google.

E ancora: perché e falso dire che Facebook ci ascolta? Principalmente e molto semplicemente, perché non ne ha bisogno: ha già tutte le informazioni per fare pubblicità mirata su di te. Sanno già molto su di te, a volte lo sanno anche prima di te. Facebook sa cosa pubblichi, cosa pubblicano i tuoi amici e gli amici dei tuoi amici. In questo modo può collegarti ai loro interessi e scommettere che qualcosa può interessarti basandosi su come e quanto interagisci con i tuoi contatti.

La realtà è che chi fa pubblicità ha modi sofisticati di profilare gli utenti. I dati di cui si è più ghiotti sono quelli di location targeting: quelli sulla posizione, il famoso “è in viaggio verso...” e via dicendo. Le informazioni su dove vivi sono fondamentali per conoscere le tue abitudini e i tuoi interessi. E poi il pixel di tracciamento, la gioia di chi fa advertising su Facebook. Il pixel è una stringa di codice presente su migliaia di siti che dialoga con Facebook ed è in grado di dirle cosa fa l’utente quando non è più su Facebook ma su questi siti. Il pixel riporta queste informazioni a Facebook: se compri, cosa compri; se lasci un articolo nel carrello e non concludi l’acquisto; quanto tempo stai un sito e su quale pagina. Sono questi i sistemi utilizzati per prevedere i tuoi interessi o i tuoi acquisti. 

Quindi: se l’altro ieri hai parlato di fare trekking in Nepal e oggi su Facebook vedi un annuncio pubblicitario su un viaggio di gruppo per trekker nel sud est asiatico, è una coincidenza. Una strana coincidenza per carità ma di questo è fatta la vita. Se li cerchi, troverai sempre dei pattern, degli schemi perché la vita ne è piena.

In ogni caso, puoi andare nelle impostazioni del tuo smartphone e decidere di disattivare la funzione microfono per Facebook (e anche per altre app) e fare un esperimento.

Voglio precisare che le cose che abbiamo appena visto sono frutto di una ricerca e di una sintesi tra le fonti che ritengo più autorevoli e più aggiornate in merito (The Guardian, BBC, Business Insider e così via). Questo nel caso domattina ci svegliassimo con una breaking news su Zuckerberg che registra le conversazioni dei suoi utenti attraverso il microfono dello smartphone!

A proposito della fine che fanno i tanti dati che regaliamo alle app.

“Con la nascita delle app per monitorare la fertilità e il ciclo, la conoscenza intima dei corpi delle donne è diventata un affare milionario. I pubblicitari analizzano i dati raccolti da queste applicazioni e sfruttano il ciclo ormonale delle utenti per vendere prodotti mirati.” The Guardian ha pubblicato un micro documentario dal titolo Chi guadagna con le tue mestruazioni? che parla proprio di Femtech (female tecnhology) l’insieme di prodotti tecnologici dedicati alla salute femminile. 

Nel quotidiano, sulle app che monitorano il ciclo puoi anche compilare dei test, fare domande, discutere in forum. E dove vanno tutte le tue risposte? Ecco 4 modi in cui questi dati possono essere utilizzati: 

venduti ad altre aziende per fare pubblicità

condivisi con altre parti di cui l’utente non sa nulla (FB, Google)

consegnati a istituti di ricerca scientifica

combinati con altri dati per creare profili che saranno venduti per stilare delle medie e analizzare le tendenze

Per chiudere, vorrei fare una domanda un po’ provocatoria: abbiamo visto come Facebook riesce a proporci degli annunci pubblicitari in sintonia con i nostri interessi. Ma è davvero il male? Cioè: essere sottoposti a pubblicità mirata e potenzialmente utile è davvero così brutto?

Regatas Preben Schmidt e Neptunus definem campeões e encerram calendário de Vela Oceânica no Rio

Foram definidos, no final de semana, os vencedores da 24ª Preben Schmidt e 25ª Neptunus, no estado do Rio de Janeiro, além da regata do 85º Aniversário do Veleiros do Sul, em Porto Alegre (RS), que encerraram o calendário do ano da Vela Oceânica no Brasil.

Campeões Olímpicos estiveram entre os destaques no Rio de Janeiro. Em Niterói (RJ), no Rio Yacht Club – Sailing, a Preben Schmidt teve a disputa da família Grael na classe Clássicos. Lars Grael, com duas medalhas de Bronze em Olimpíadas, venceu com o barco Marga, que data de 1933, construído na Finlândia. Ele deixou o irmão Torben Grael, dono de duas medalhas de Ouro em Olimpíadas, em segundo lugar com o barco Lady Lou comandado por Andrea Grael. Em terceiro fechando o pódio ficou o Aileen, comandado por Martine Grael, campeã Olímpica na Rio-2016. A Regata Preben Schmidt homenageia o avô de Torben e Lars de mesmo nome. Ele navegou com o Aileen conquistando medalha de Prata nos Jogos Olímpicos de 1912 em Estocolmo, na Suécia. A 24ª edição contou com mais de 80 barcos e presença de tripulação da Espanha e homenagem a Fernão de Magalhães que completou 500 anos de sua passagem pelo Rio de Janeiro na circonavegação realizada em 13 de dezembro de 1519 dando a volta ao mundo e provando que a Terra era redonda. “Foi mais um grande edição da Preben, mais de 80 barcos na raia, uma grande confraternização da vela do Rio de Janeiro, talvez a maior do Brasil com presença de medalhistas Olímpicos, campeões mundiais como a Martine Grael, até mesmo o troféu do Mundial de Snipe apareceu no balcão do bar do Rio Yacht Club troféu já conquistado por vários nomes como o Erik Schmidt, o Torben Grael, Maurício Santa Cruz, Luis Marcelo Maia, e eu mesmo”, disse Lars que comentou sobre a Regata: “Tivemos ventos fracos sobretudo fora da Baía de Guanabara, desafio para muitos. Vencemos nos Clássicos, foi bem legal, recebemos troféu da Marinha da Espanha em homenagem ao Fernão de Magalhães que no dia 13 de dezembro, 500 anos atrás, passou pelo Rio de Janeiro fazendo a circonavegação. Estava lá o comandante do navio veleiro da Espanha, Juan Sebastian Elcano, entregando o mesmo troféu e essa tripulação espanhola participou com o veleiro Dourado. Tivemos patrocínio da Mapfre Seguros e do Instituto de Resseguros do Brasil, o IRB. Que venha 2020”, destacou Lars, ex-Comodoro da ABVO e Conselheiro Técnico da entidade.  O barco Sorsa comandado por Celso Quintella foi o grande destaque do final de semana vencendo na classe ORC na Preben Schmidt e na 25ª edição da Regata Neptunus. O barco teve a presença de Eduardo Penido, campeão Olímpico em Moscou em 1980. Jonny King, do Sorsa, comentou: “Regata no domingo foi um dia lindo, sol, normalmente como é no Rio, foi ótimo pra gente, fita azul e ganhamos no tempo corrigido, um dia perfeito. Temos um dos maiores barcos, mais rápidos. Tivemos um final de semana ótimo vencendo a Preben também, foi muito bom”, disse. A Regata Neptunus, com pontos no ranking da Copa Brasil da Associação Brasileira de Veleiros de Oceano, a ABVO, realizada no Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, homenageia Sergio Mirskyi, um dos precursores da vela de oceano no Brasil e com maior número de fitas azuis do país. Seu filho e um dos organizadores, André Mirsky comemorou a realização do evento.

“Todo ano ficamos felizes pela regata, homenagem ao meu pai, um velejador icônico e muita gente faz questão de participar, tivemos gente de Ilhabela, barco Atrevida, é uma honra representá-lo. Fechamos o ranking da ABVO e FEVERJ e tem a importância não só pela fecha, mas também na parte técnica com contra-vento bom, vento de popa bom, que foi o que teve hoje. Tivemos misto de nostalgia, festa com parte técnica.  Regata começou com vento leste de 12, 13 nós, foi caindo e fazendo com que a regata ficasse bem difícil,  mas na bóia de Copacabana o vento acabou e os barcos se juntaram de novo e começou uma regata nova até a escola Naval. A Regata premiou quem velejou legal”, disse André que no currículo tem a participação no barco Brasil I na Volvo Ocean Race em 2005, títulos do campeonato italiano e Mar Egeu.  Na classe IRC os campeões foram o Danadão na Preben Schmidt e o Carro Chefe na Neptunus. O Danadão comandado por Guilherme Raffare e com Maurício Santa Cruz, o Santinha, pentacampeão mundial, e o Carro Chefe comandado por João Souza. Em segundo lugar na Neptunus ficou o Esculacho e em terceiro o Tangará II comandado por Lars Grael. Na Preben Schmidt o Manga Wiki ficou em segundo e o Mirnna completou o pódio. Na classe RGS na Neptunus destaque para o barco DORF de Robert Schnardorf conquistando o título deixando o Leila W e o Kameha Meha em terceiro: “Foi uma regata difícil, largamos bem ficamos na frente de vários barcos da ORC e IRC, optamos por um caminho diferente dos outros, perto do litoral, teve uma hora que pegamos um buraco de vento, mas depois o vento voltou, tivemos um contra-tempo de um navio mercante que nos atrapalhou, mas passamos bem por isso”, disse Schnardorf que veleja há cinco décadas e foi campeão estadual ano passado. Ele destacou a importância dos barcos RGS na vela de oceano do Brasil: “Falta um pouco de incentivo para a RGS que é uma categoria de barco de oceano para meia idade, os barcos mais modernos e sofisticados ficam na ORC e IRC e na RGS temos muitos barcos parados que não participam porque os comandantes e tripulantes não queiram correr. Se a ABVO puder colaborar para incentivar mais barcos para participarem das regatas será muito bom”.  A Regata Preben Schmidt contou com uma animada feijoada e muita cerveja e a Neptunus com um coquetel no salão Nobre do ICRJ com muita cerveja Heineken. Em Porto Alegre com vento atípico norte de até 15 nós foi realizada a Regata de 85 anos de Aniversário da Veleiros do Sul, também com pontos para o ranking da Copa Brasil ABVO, com percurso que passou pela estação Catamarã, Museu do Iberê Camargo e Canal do Cristal até a Usina do Gasômetro.  Na classe IRC a Regata teve a premiação Amazônia Azul feita pela Marinha e o vencedor foi o Kamizake, da VDS, comandado por Augusto Moreira, deixando o Delirium e o Spin no segundo e terceiro lugares respectivamente. Depois da regata foram realizadas as premiações com formatura da Escola de Vela Minuano e diplomação de sócios veteranos. “Foi belo dia para velejar, o vento norte que não é  normal ajudou a deixar a regata  bem disputada, pois a bóia próxima ao Gasômetro, centro de Porto Alegre,  ficou bem de contra vento. Assim a disputa ficou bem acirrada com várias alternâncias de posições”, disse Kadu Bergenthal, vice-comodoro da VDS. 

“Como esperado tivemos um grande final de semana de encerramento da Vela de Oceano no Brasil no Rio e no Rio Grande do Sul, dois dos nossos grandes polos, com medalhistas olímpicos e campeões mundiais prestigiando. Daremos ênfase para a inserção de cada vez mais barcos para 2020 nas raias e isso passa por um maior incentivo na classe RGS que já começamos a trabalhar não só no Sul-Sudeste, mas também Nordeste do país”, disse Mário Martinez, Comodoro da ABVO.
